ADELAIDE MOTORSPORT FESTIVAL

The Adelaide Motorsport Festival is a celebration of power, speed, courage and innovation, commemorating various golden eras of motorsport and motoring.

Held from March 24 to 26, 2023, the Adelaide Motorsport Festival is a museum in motion, displaying historic, rare and significant racing vehicles from the formative years of motoring to more modern motorsport cars.

Adelaide’s motorsport pedigree is unmatched, hosting the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995 and the Adelaide 500 from 1999. The Adelaide Motorsport Festival brings together the cream of automotive history and heritage, all in a picnic-races setting around a section of the iconic Adelaide Street Circuit in Victoria Park.

The 2023 event starts with a street party in the East End on the night of Friday March 24. A high-powered parade of rare vehicles runs from Victoria Park through the city along the original grand prix track route and arrives on Rundle Street. Partygoers will mingle among the cars and stars, with live music, celebrity driver appearances, street performers and pop-up bars creating a fun and festive atmosphere.

Then, on Saturday and Sunday March 25 and 26, the Adelaide Motorsport Festival hits the track in Victoria Park. The action is fast, furious and frequently changing, with a different category of vehicles on track every 10 to 15 minutes, from legendary Formula 1 cars to historic touring cars

OFF TRACK ACTIVITIES

While the action takes place on track, off-track you can enjoy fine local food, with beer, wine and spirits from local producers on the shady lawns, browse the trade stalls and check out the static displays of cars and motorcycles. It’s a rare opportunity to see a variety of exotic cars from the road and race track, getting up close to them in person and seeing them in action.

50 IS GOLDEN for the State Theatre Company

If there were ever something worthy of a standing ovation, it would be a celebration of 50 years. A milestone moment for the State Theatre, with the Company this year celebrating a half century of creating shows, careers and creative eras that have defined South Australian and Australian culture.

For State Theatre Company South Australia’s Artistic Director Mitchell Butel, his time at the beloved mainstage theatre company has been twice marked by the golden milestone.

“I turned 50 in my second year of being Artistic Director of this wonderful company. I was in rehearsal for the first show I had programmed, Dance Nation, with a hugely talented, mostly South Australian cast. I loved turning 50, not only because the amazing cast and company staff gave me the best birthday lunch think I’ve ever had and because I had just started leading a company that I admire so much, but I loved what 50 meant – half a century, a chance to look back at what you’ve achieved and a chance to look forward with excitement to all the things yet to be achieved,” he says. “I feel at 50 I finally became the person I’d been wanting to be. And that feeling has continued while at State Theatre Company South Australia.

It’s been 50 years of phenomenal, groundbreaking theatre that has launched and developed the careers of so many great Australian actors, directors, designers, writers, composers and crew. A company that has given joy, provocation and delight to literally millions of audience members of all ages.

While the company was founded in 1965 as South Australian Theatre Company, it was officially established in 1972 after being legislated by an act of parliament by the great former Premier Don Dunstan.

More than five decades—and over 600 shows—later, the company has built its reputation for its commissions and staging of new work, the ambition of its programming, its education and touring programs and its leading collaboration across the industry. Many Australian actors got their start at the company, such as Sarah Snook, Edwin Hodgeman, Judy Davis, Mel Gibson and Hugo Weaving, and the company has nurtured the careers of SA artists both on stage and off.

The State Theatre Company workshop and wardrobe team is known as the best in Australia, with their skills being called upon locally and nationally.

The company also has a brilliant Access program, offering AUSLAN interpretation, captioning, audio description and audio enhancement so every audience member can have the full experience.

“So many South Australians’ first taste of theatre happened at one of our shows, and that is still happening with many of our young audiences,” Butel says. “There are those who saw shows in our very first season and who are still coming.

“People often stop and tell me about their favourite shows over the years—shows that reflected what was happening in their lives, shows that marked key life moments for them, shows that gave them a new way to see things.”

At the heart of the company are its subscribers.

“Anyone can become a subscriber – it’s a bit like subscribing to Netflix except you get more thrills and kicks when you see actors live and up close,” Butel says. “You choose which plays you like the look of, you book which nights you think you might like to go (which you can change at a later date too if you run into problems), pick the best seats in the theatre and get a huge discount on what you’d otherwise pay if you bought a ticket on the night. And you end up with a calendar with

some lovely theatrical treats awaiting you and your friends and for which the work is already done.”

“I love our subscriber family. Many have been coming for many years, while others have just discovered the joys of witnessing a whole season of great work. love hearing from all of them and they help us shape the direction and style of the work we do. Our Subscribers are the soul of the company. The memory of the Company lives in the minds of our audience.”

Butel says next year’s season is perhaps “one of the most exciting seasons we’ve ever presented”.

“The season contains an acclaimed, internationally best-selling South Australian novel brought to life in a world premiere (The Dictionary of Lost Words); a musical homage to one of the world’s greatest singers (Lady Day, based on the life of Billie Holiday); two of the hottest and most heart-stopping Australian plays in recent history (Prima Facie and At What Cost?); an immersive, interactive night of laughter and theatrical magic (Every Brilliant Thing); a deep dive into the one origin story we all have in common (Welcome to Your New Life); and a Tony Award-winning classic tragicomedy (The Goat) starring Claudia Karvan and Don Hany.

“Theatre is a gymnasium for empathy, a place to feel what it’s like to walk in another person’s shoes, a place to gather to contemplate our world and its stories and the way we live and want to live. That’s a special thing and makes our city and state a better place to be,” Butel says.

“It’s an honour to be the custodian of the Company. Our goal is to produce phenomenal, inclusive and transformative theatre that enriches South Australian and Australian culture. And have some fun while doing it.”

A LOOK BACK AT 50 YEARS

THE LES DARCY SHOW 1978

Jack Hibberd’s The Les Darcy Show was staged in 1978, a huge year for State Theatre Company that saw the company bring in a group of promising young NIDA graduates – none other than Judy Davis, Colin Friels (who would later become Judy’s husband) and Mel Gibson. A musical play about middle-weight boxing champion Les Darcy, the show also starred Wayne Jarratt, Isobel Kirk, Michele Stayner, Les Dayman and Tony Prehn.

THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE 2016

In a landmark development, State Theatre Company South Australia made its first international co-production in 2016 with Things I Know To Be True, created with London-based physical theatre company Frantic Assembly. The commissioned work by leading playwright Andrew Bovell drew critical acclaim for its compelling visual language and sentimental story about a suburban South Australian family. Directed by then-Artistic Director Geordie Brookman, it featured a star ensemble including Nathan O’Keefe, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Eugenia Fragos, Georgia Adamson, Tim Walter and the late Paul Blackwell.

CEDOONA 1978

A year before the worldwide release of Mad Max made him a star, Mel Gibson made his professional stage debut in the 1978 production of Roger Pulvers’ Cedoona. In his 20s at the time, Gibson developed his stage craft with the company – then called South Australian Theatre Company – in several other productions including Oedipus the King, Henry IV and The Les Darcy Show. He is pictured here with Colin Friels.

PRIVATE LIVES 1984

Three years after graduating from NIDA and the same year he landed his first major TV role in the Network Ten series Bodyline, Hugo Weaving made his State Theatre Company debut in Noel Coward’s Private Lives, directed by Rodney Fisher. Starring some other familiar faces, including Vanessa Downing and Andrew Tighe, the show played in Adelaide and also travelled to the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs. Weaving later starred in the company’s productions of Ring Around the Moon (1989) and Julius Caesar (1991).

HIBERNATION 2021

Grand, theatrically inventive and provocative, this three-act epic by beloved Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer was one of the most ambitious projects from the Company in recent years. Directed by Mitchell Butel, the world premiere brought together some of the state’s finest artists and garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences. Hibernation was revolutionary in both concept and aesthetics, bringing together an esteemed team of designers including award-winning set designer Jonathon Oxlade, lighting designer Gavin Norris and Associate Costume Designer Ailsa Paterson. It starred Chris Asimos, Rosalba Clemente, Rashidi Edward, Elizabeth Hay, Ezra Juanta, Ansuya Nathan, Mark Saturno, James Smith, Kialea-Nadine Williams, Poppy Kelly and Eva Hinde.

Inspired by the oral histories of Greek, Cypriot and Italian migrants to regional SA, this historical fiction from renowned SA artist Elena Carapetis was the Company’s first trilingual show, performed in a mix of English, Greek and Italian with English subtitles. With the support of Country Arts SA, it premiered in Port Pirie to a standing ovation and had many more of those throughout its Adelaide season at the Dunstan Playhouse. It starred Dina Panozzo, Renato Musolino, Eugenia Fragos, Deborah Galanos, Philippos Ziakas and Elizabeth Hay.

IT’S TIME TO REWRITE THE RULEBOOK ON AGEING

Ageism is the inability or refusal to recognise the rights, needs, contributions and value of people in our community based on their age. It impacts people of all ages, but is particularly experienced by older people and it is endemic in our society.

Ageism is often unwitting and subconscious and according to the Australian Human Rights Commission, it is the most accepted form of discriminatory prejudice, with evidence suggesting that it is more pervasive and socially acceptable than sexism or racism.

One in three (37%) Australians aged 50+ have experienced some form of ageism and it is profoundly harmful. At a personal level, discrimination includes being turned down for a job or overlooked for a promotion, being ignored or treated rudely, and being the subject of disparaging jokes based on age.

But it doesn’t end there! Ageism is also the prerequisite and enabler of elder abuse, it prematurely ends careers, overlooks low standards in aged care, threatens equitable access to health services and is a direct contributor to isolation and loneliness.

COTA (Council on the Ageing) SA is an older people’s movement run by, for and with older people who represent the rights, interests, and futures of almost 700,000 older South Australians.

Undertaking multiple events, forums and surveys each year, COTA SA seeks to understand the views, life experiences and needs of those aged 50+, and is on a mission to actively combat all forms of ageism.

Unable to be promoted in the workplace

The perception of being doddery and silly

On 30 September, COTA SA held an event at U City in Adelaide to celebrate the UN International Day of Older Persons (1 October), a day that was created in 1990 to not only celebrate the important contributions that older people make in the community but also to highlight the issues faced with growing older.

Attended by 150 guests, the event revolved around rewriting the rules on ageing and disrupting the stereotypes, assumptions and stigmas of ageing to make way for a modern take on growing older.

The event was hosted by COTA SA Deputy President, Anne Burgess AM, who was joined by a panel of speakers including veteran media personality, Keith Conlon OAM, chef and food manufacturer, Maggie Beer AO, and Chair of the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia, Polly Sumner Dodd.

Guests had various opportunities to reflect on and talk about their experiences of growing older with like-minded people.

Leading up to and during the event, COTA SA asked older South Australians what positive words they would use to describe getting older. The most common responses were words like freedom, experience, joyous, enlightening, healthy and active. The challenges of growing older were also considered, which included words like feeling invisible, pain, ill health, loneliness, uncertainty, and financial insecurity.

What excites you about ageing?

"I can do whatever I want!"

"I think the idea of freedom and choice over how you spend your time."

“These rules have been inherited from the times of our parents and grandparents and ageism is making them stick…We have worked hard to achieve longer and healthier lives but despite this, we are stuck with stereotypes of older age that don’t fit with our modern reality." concluded Anne.

"T hat I don’t have to live my life according to society’s expectations of what it means to be old."

"It’s the freedom and engagement with family, friends and the community. There is also more time to do the things you love and want to do."

"It’s the ability to run your own course, the freedom to choose the things you do, who you work with and when."

COTA SA will use the qualitative data gathered at the event to write the new rulebook on ageing and tell the story of what it’s like to grow older in 2022 and beyond.

For more information about how you can be involved with COTA: cota.org.au

"Having the confidence of being able to do the things that you really want to do."

"I think it’s confidence, knowledge and experience and the fact that I care less about the things that made me anxious when I was younger."

WHAT DOES THE ECONOMIC FUTURE HOLD FOR US?

If you are approaching retirement and are reliant on your super to fund your longterm income stream, or have recently taken out a loan for a new property, the current economic conditions could be creating you a higher-than-normal level of concern. It is now more important than ever to understand one’s appetite for risk and be aware of the volatility held in investments or super.

SO WHERE WE ARE ECONOMICALLY AND WHAT MIGHT THE FUTURE HOLD FOR US?

The current global rise in inflation is caused primarily by the effects of:

Governments borrowing to inject funds into their economies to keep their populations employed during the pandemic shut down

Governments are fearful of inflation as if left unchecked, it will derail economies causing currencies to collapse and debt levels to increase. Governments will seemingly stop at nothing to get inflation under control, hence we have seen interest rates spiral, with further rate rises still to come. This time, the primary driver for inflation is a lack of supply as well as increasing energy prices; we may also need to see an increase in unemployment to bring it under control.

The increase in the cash rate—driven by the rise in government bond rates, coupled with the fear of a global recession—has caused markets and assets generally to be repriced. This has also seen a negative return for bond holders, making what was previously considered a ‘safe option’ see negative returns. This has resulted in the only positive return being in cash over the last 6 months Investments and super accounts with holdings primarily in unlisted or direct assets will perform better during this period but there is a risk that if the climate disintegrated further, those assets could become illiquid.

WHERE TO FROM HERE?

Since I started in the financial services industry almost 38 years ago, there have been several events that caused markets to correct; the 1987 share market crash caused by computerised selling due to the fear of the world going into recession, the gulf war in 1990, Russian debt crisis in 1998, the tech stock correction in 2000, September 11 attacks in 2001, the global financial crisis in 2007/2008 and the global shut down caused by the spread of Covid-19 of which we are still feeling the fall out today.

The lack of supply due to transport restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic

Factory shutdowns due to lock downs and COVID isolation for workers

The lack of development of current energy sources due to the emphasis on moving to net 0 emissions, coupled with

Each of these events has had very different triggers and caused values to drop substantially and were quite sudden. A key consideration of all this is that eventually markets have recovered and that these times of insecurity ultimately turn out to be times of opportunity. The trick is not to be caught out at the wrong time such as borrowing excessively in a weak labour market or being overexposed to volatile assets close to retirement.

It’s likely that rates will continue to rise due to high inflation and there will be a lot of people with loans that have never been through a rising interest rate cycle, but this will also create an opportunity for investment. For those who are retired and rely on Centrelink, it will be the first time in many years that their benefit will be indexed helping to reflect the rising cost of living.

The effects of the Russia/Ukraine crisis have seen energy prices soar.

There is also an argument that employees not wanting to return to the workforce—rather, continuing the working from home lifestyle—has effectively reduced overall productivity and business development. This, combined with the global labour shortage due to a lack of people entering the workforce, as well as wages pressure, have all contributed to the increase in inflation.

Lift offers support services to people with cancer from the point of diagnosis, throughout treatment and into survivorship.

Every day, Lift connects patients with physiotherapy, dietetics, psychology, speech and exercise medicine. These may not be the main event in cancer treatment but they are an essential part of treating the person, not just the pathology. 

IDEA

ABOUT WHEN SUPPORTING A CLOSE FRIEND WITH BREAST CANCER. WHAT DID YOU SEE WAS MISSING IN CANCER CARE?

Working as a Physiotherapist, I had identified the lack of coordinated services for patients I was working with. Although it was easy to identify the various allied health needs of my patients, it was difficult to know where they could access these services from appropriately skilled clinicians.

At Lift we aim to provide a one stop shop for patients seeking allied health support during their cancer experience.

We have brought together the allied health services these patients need in one location. Staffed by clinicians with experience in oncology, the patients who come to Lift feel safe as their unique healthcare needs are being looked after.

In addition to bringing these services together, Lift offers an exciting approach to exercise for cancer patients. With the support of an on-site medical team, Lift provides exercise specifically for people undergoing active cancer treatment. Exercise Medicine at Lift is delivered in a dose shown to manage common side effects of cancer drugs, reduce cancer recurrence and improve overall survival. This innovative approach to exercise in cancer care was something I was aware of as being best practice, however it was not something available.

Lift has been able to identify these gaps and provides a range of commonly required allied health services as well as best practice, evidence-based Exercise Medicine treatment, all in the one location.

The evidence shows that exercise prescribed at a certain dose to people with cancer has 3 compelling outcomes.

One, it will reduce many of the common and very debilitating side effects of the treatment that cancer patients experience—this includes cancer related fatigue—something that can last for years and represents a huge quality of life issue as well a broader economic impact.

Secondly, exercise administered at this evidence-based dose can reduce the risk of cancer recurrence by up to 35%

And finally, it can improve overall survival by up to 60%.

To summarise, the evidence is very clearly telling us that exercise, when prescribed and administered in the correct dosage, is an anticancer treatment.

What the evidence is telling us is clear; exercise is medicine. If exercise was a drug, it would be prescribed to all people with cancer.

WHY IS EXERCISE AN ‘ESSENTIAL PART OF MEDICINE’ WHEN IT COMES TO CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT?

Over the last 15 years, the body of evidence supporting the benefits of exercise for people with cancer has exploded. It is now at such a point that it cannot be denied.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OUTCOMES YOU’RE SEEING WITH CLIENTS?

While the clinical services at Lift have many evidence-based outcomes, the overarching theme of what we are trying to achieve at Lift is maximising the quality of life and outcomes of our patients.

We have many heart-warming stories from our patients that through a range of sentiments, highlight to us and remind us of the impact we have on their enjoyment and quality of life.

I remember a conversation with a woman diagnosed with breast cancer who came to Lift for a range of our services. She said to me “Lauren, this is going to sound really strange, but I feel blessed to have been diagnosed with cancer, because it led me to Lift, and my life will always be better for it”.

I was overwhelmed by her statement, and it took me a long time to digest. It was the most humbling thing I had heard. I also remember in that moment thinking back to when I was working on the business plan for Lift. I could not have possibly anticipated a statement like that...it certainly wasn’t in my business plan…but that is when knew that everything we were doing was right. We were making a difference.

From anecdotal evidence to more robust data, Lift partnered with a medical oncology practice to produce a study that examined the effect of the exercise delivered at Lift, on the growth of tumours. The study looked at 137 pairs of patients – with each pair matched for gender, age, type of cancer, stage of cancer and other markers.

In each pair, one was coming to Lift to get exercise treatment as well as getting chemotherapy and the other was just getting chemotherapy. The results of this study were phenomenal.

It showed that overall, those who attend Lift for exercise treatment in addition to their chemotherapy had a 66% reduction in the odds of disease progression and a 76% reduction in the odds of death.

After the study was written up it was submitted to the Internal Medicine Journal and at the end of last year it was accepted and published.

Contributing to the existing body of evidence of exercise in cancer and demonstrating how our treatments are improving health outcomes has been very exciting for Lift.

however, it would require patients to access this treatment in an environment that would be able to manage the clinical risks often associated with these patients. This led to Lift becoming an accredited day hospital and creating a hybrid model of Day Hospital and out-patient clinic. This represents the core of the operational challenges Lift faces across almost every area.

From simple things like finding clinical software to support the Lift model of care; to more significant regulatory requirements, there are many elements of Lift that require complex problem solving, creativity and innovation.

The other area that has required focus has been educating people about exercise and cancer. Most people are used to engaging

The good news is that there are many lifestyle factors that can help to reduce the risk of cancer. Keeping a healthy weight, limiting alcohol intake, practicing sun safety, and keeping active are all excellent habits to focus on.

The importance of exercise is something we focus on at Lift and as far as prevention goes, exercise is one of the best things you can be doing to boost your immune system, maintain physical function and reduce the risk of many cancers.

Unfortunately, the statistics around exercise tell us that in Australia an estimated 55% of people don’t meet the guidelines for cardiovascular exercise and 60% don’t meet the guidelines for resistance-based exercise.

If you don’t know where to start, make an appointment to see an Exercise Physiologist and they can tailor a program to suit your individual needs and ability.

the evidence is telling us is clear; exercise is medicine. If exercise was a drug, it would be prescribed to all people with cancer.”

It is also important to remember to participate in regular check-ups with your doctor and cancer screening programs such as the Breast Screen Australia program and the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Your GP will be able to connect you with these initiatives.

with exercise as part of a rehabilitation program after they have undergone a procedure or at the end of a course of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. As we offer exercise medicine treatment to people from the point of diagnosis and while they are undergoing cancer therapies, education of our referring specialists and our patients has been essential. At Lift we are putting evidence into practice, and this requires a shift in mindset from what we are used to doing for this patient population to what we know is going to provide optimum outcomes.

 THE INCIDENCE OF MOST CANCERS INCREASES WITH AGE. WHY IS THIS SO, AND IS THERE ANYTHING A PERSON CAN DO TO REDUCE THE RISK?

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR LIFT CANCER CARE SERVICES?

My vision for Lift is to change the landscape of healthcare delivery for oncology patients. have seen the value of what we have been able to provide to the people who come to use our service and I think it’s something all people with cancer deserve access to.

Part of achieving this goal is contributing to the changing narrative around exercise in cancer care and the vital role it can play as an anticancer treatment. Lift has published one paper, and we would love to continue to play our part in growing this space and further contribute to the exciting growing body of evidence in the area of exercise and cancer.

One of the most important issues that needed to be resolved initially was how to safely connect people with cancer to the high intensity exercise shown to provide the best outcomes. Lift was to be a one stop for allied health services, with its unique selling point being that exercise was to be delivered in a dosage that would provide anti-cancer benefits to patients. This was an approach based on the latest evidence;

The incidence of most diseases increases as we age. This is partly because you tend to have more exposure to risk factors the longer you live. In the case of cancer this can be things like sun exposure, smoking, alcohol intake or poor diet. As we get older we may also reduce some of our healthy habits such as exercise and meaningful social interaction.

Over time, our body's cells become damaged. As we age and our immune systems weaken, there is more time for damage to accumulate and cause cells to grow and multiply more than usual, causing cancer.

A cervical screening game changer for women after menopause

Did you stop having regular cervical screening when you went through menopause? Maybe it’s because you found the test painful in the past, or you found the process uncomfortable or embarrassing. Maybe you thought you didn’t need to test anymore because you stopped being sexually active or only had one partner throughout your life. Maybe you didn’t intentionally stop, you just got busy enjoying life.

A big change to cervical screening commenced in July 2022. A self collection option is now available to everyone who is due for their cervical screening test. Self collection involves inserting a long-handled cotton bud a few centimetres into your vagina. You do not need to insert a speculum or “find” your cervix. You can do it yourself, in private. It’s painless, easy to do and just as accurate as having the GP collect the sample. If you prefer to have a speculum examination, that option is still available too.

Over 70% of cervical cancers can be prevented by regular cervical screening.

Cervical screening is now recommended every five years (it used to be two), and the name changed from “pap test” to “cervical screening test”.

Most people doing the test will receive the “all clear” and get on with enjoying life. But if there’s a problem, it’s better to find it early when treatment options are less invasive. Very few cancers can be detected early, but cervical changes can be monitored well before they develop into cervical cancer.

In fact, over 70% of cervical cancers can be prevented by regular cervical screening.

Regardless of your situation, it’s important for anyone with a cervix aged 25 to 74 to have regular screening tests to protect yourself from cervical cancer.

If you are not sure when you had your last cervical screening test, visit the National Cancer Screening Register website and search via the Participant Portal, or call 1800 627 701 (ncsr.gov.au)

WE HEAR YOU

It happens to the best of us. That defining moment when we realise our parents are getting older. For some of us, it’s a sudden wake-up call; for others, it’s a gradual realisation that things are changing.

Helping Hand has been supporting older South Australians and their families for almost 70 years. People from all walks-of-life have chosen to share their journey with us. In return, we have listened and learned from their experiences.

Over time, common threads and themes have emerged. In this instance we are talking about when to have a caring conversation with a parent about getting older. However, this advice can apply to a partner, a sibling, a relative or a friend.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

It’s hard to know if you are having conversations about getting older too early – but you may feel it when you’ve left these conversations too late or have avoided them altogether.

We believe the best time to start a conversation with your parents about their wishes and goals, is always before you absolutely need to.

Far too often, family members tell us how overwhelming it is making decisions in stressful, rushed circumstances and without really knowing what their parents would have wanted for themselves. It doesn’t have to be this way.

WHEN IT COMES TO EARLY CONVERSATIONS ABOUT AGED CARE, WE’RE INSPIRED BY THIS PROVERB: ‘THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS 20 YEARS AGO. THE SECOND BEST TIME IS NOW.'

PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES

Early conversations about getting older are an opportunity to explore options and preferences, rather than making hard and fast decisions. You may instinctively want to jump in and start ‘fixing the problem’. Before you do, ask yourself how you would feel if decisions about your lifestyle were being made for you, instead of with you.

Your parent’s voice, their life story, wishes and rights should be the focal point of every conversation.

LEARNING

The more informed you are, the more prepared you are for the highs and lows of caring for a parent who is getting older.

One of the benefits of early conversations about aged care services is that you create a calm space to find out how the aged care system works and how to navigate it. Once you start putting the picture together, you’ll learn about what services are available and how they align with your parent’s circumstances and their preferences.

The My Aged Care website myagedcare.gov.au is the starting point for everyone who is looking for information on government funded services.

TRUSTED PARTNERSHIPS

When you are ready to talk to someone about Home Care, Respite, Retirement Living or Residential Care, it’s important to find an aged care provider that reflects your values and goals. When people choose to share their journey with Helping Hand, we see it a privilege and a true partnership.

CONVERSATION STARTERS

Most of us are comfortable talking about retirement plans or drawing up a Will. Having plans in place for getting older is an extension of these types of arrangements.

An Advanced Care Directive is a legal form where people can express their personal wishes regarding their future health care, end of life choices, living arrangements or other personal matters. Power of Attorney is another legal arrangement where a parent appoints someone to oversee their financial, medical or personal affairs.

Having a conversation about these plans is a good way to start a conversation with your parents about their preferences and choices as they get older.

We understand that having a conversation with a parent about getting older can be challenging and emotional – for everyone. We’ve developed a series of short films, where you can follow one family’s experiences, from different points of view, as they find themselves making decisions about aged care. You can watch these films at www.helpinghand.org.au/wehearyou

UPSKILL WITH ENHANCE TRAINING

We all enjoy meeting new people, understanding their goals and why they want to start new careers, upskill or do something new. We had a chat recently with student, Antonieta where we found her in Mel's class at the Enhance Training Skills Lab studying for her Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) CHC33015 as part of a traineeship in Aged Care.

Antonieta is mum to two daughters now aged 17 and 24 and she recently began considering her career options. Before becoming a parent, she worked as a nurse in the Philippines, Singapore and USA. Now that her daughters are older, she has decided to do something for herself and go back to a profession she has always loved and to use her skills of caring for people in a new career in aged care.

On noticing some advertising by leading South Australian provider, My Care Solution promoting a mature age traineeship, Antonieta applied for the opportunity and was successful in progressing through the recruitment process. The traineeship which includes one day of study per week with Enhance Training RTO 40387 commenced in March and she hopes to have her study completed by the end of 2022.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START FURTHER EDUCATION AND LEARN NEW SKILLS. ENHANCE TRAINING'S NATIONALLY RECOGNISED COURSES CAN OPEN PATHWAYS TO FURTHER VOCATIONAL OR UNIVERSITY STUDIES.

"I have been learning about the legislation and laws governing the aged care industry and how understanding the rules gives students broad understanding of responsibilities and invokes confidence at work knowing we're doing what is right."

ANTONIETA, TRAINEE MY CARE SOLUTION.

This format of study is designed to be flexible, supportive and collaborative, providing the opportunity for people to apply their newly learned skills directly into the workplace.

Antonieta has found the classes delivered by trainers Mel or Beth to be personalised and well-structured helping her to re-enter the workforce in the aged care sector with confidence.

"The great thing about Antonieta is that she is really interactive in class. She is not afraid to ask questions which helps the whole class to expand their knowledge. As an existing trainee she shows the ability to take what she learns in class and apply it in the workplace."

BETH, ENHANCE TRAINING TRAINER & ASSESSOR.

People employed on a traineeship are able to work full time or part time with a host organisation which includes one day a week of study all while earning an income.

Traineeships typically run for 12 months and are the ideal way to commence a new career in a new industry and for organisations to build their skilled workforce pipeline for the future. For organisations, traineeships allow them to grow their teams and have their experienced and knowledgeable staff support the trainees, however we also find trainees bring their new knowledge and skills to the workplace and staff learn just as much from them too.

Enhance Training specialises in delivering nationally recognised courses in aged care, disability support and early childhood education and care. Our trainers are all experienced or continue to work in their industries and share that knowledge with their students ensuring training remains practical and interesting.

Enhance Training enjoys collaborating with leading industry organisations to upskill staff, introducing new talent to organisations and working with people who are enthusiastic about making a difference through their careers.

Through life experience comes maturity, reliability, empathy, and compassion. Many employers find these are desirable characteristics for community service workers in delivering premium care and support to their clients.

It’s a big, bold claim to suggest that you have trialled and tried every recipe in a cookbook before the book in question has even hit the shelves – however, when it comes to Poh’s latest gem, can proudly say with hand on heart that this is indeed the case. Yes, every recipe.

‘What cook when nobody’s watching’ is the cookbook we’ve all been waiting for and didn’t know it. It’s like an exquisitely bound personal invitation into Poh’s kitchen. A deeply personal insight into how Poh goes about her craft, like a back stage pass or front door key to a seat at Poh’s table. It’s a book that celebrates everything fabulous about food – the joy, the memories, the magic, the honesty, the cheekiness and the comfort. It’s a book about food we can share. Food that makes you smile. And, perhaps most importantly, food borne from recipes that we can all make. Some will be familiar, others foreign. But one of this book’s many triumphs is that it offers guides, tips and tricks that encourage the reader to try new things and thoroughly enjoy the experience, whether we are cooking for one (and have 5 minutes in which to plate up) or have planned a special feast to feed and nourish those we love.

Poh has shared many gorgeous recipes in her book. Some utilise simple, every day, readily available ingredients, while others include new finds. There’s the inclusion of elements that require no cooking at all and treasured family favourites, the dishes that might be served when the now-grown Yeow kids (Poh included) still find their way home to Mumma Yeow’s table for dinner. There are super quickies as well as entertainer’s delights, plus tips and ideas that help in the kitchen and the garden, including a nifty method for bringing you back when you’re

feeling a little worse for wear. And for all those JAMFACE stall fans, there are a few tightly held recipes for some of those favourites you line up for at the Farmer’s Markets each Sunday.

Another one of Poh’s loves shines through in ‘What I cook when nobody’s watching’ – people. Friends, relatives and even Poh’s beloved doggos Rhino and Tim all play a significant part in this very special and refreshingly honest book.

It’s as full of love and joy as it is simple and yummy recipes. And best of all, it is Poh all over. Her vast talent, genuine warmth and love of family and feeding others is there on every page. There are thrifty tips to make life—and cooking—easier and every single recipe has been tested and refined over and over to ensure utter joy and maximum yumminess with every dish you cook. And who doesn’t want that?

Buttermilk brined

Lamb Shoulder - A celebration dish

RECIPE: Mandy Hall

This recipe is sort of like my best-of. It’s a combination of all the great and hugely flavoursome Lamb Shoulder dishes I have eaten and made

INGREDIENTS

• 2 kg lamb shoulder (bone-in)

MARINADE

• 300ml Buttermilk

• 3TB salt

• 80 ml Olive Oil

• 5 green Chilli - I have used long, mild chillies for this recipe

2TB Smoked Paprika

• 2TB Coriander Seeds - slightly crushed

• 3TB ground Cumin

• 1.5 TB Dijon Mustard

• 1/2 bunch each of fresh green herbs, I have used parsley, thyme & a small amount of sage

• 8 Golden Shallots - peeled and halved.

TOPPING

• 125g Woodside Cheese Wright's Goat Curd

• Pomegranate Arils

• 1/2 bunch Mint - chopped

• 1/2 bunch Coriander - chopped

Don't let the list of ingredients make you think twice, it's a simple recipe that is bursting with flavour, not too much effort and a lot of impressed guests.

METHOD

In a bowl, mix all the marinade ingredients (except the shallots) together and let sit for 10 minutes, find a snaplock bag or covered container large enough to contain the shoulder, place the shoulder in the container and pour over the marinade, making sure you cover and rub it over the lamb completely. Place the lamb in the fridge for 24-36 hours and turn it over, at least twice, more often if you think of it.

When the lamb has fully marinated, remove it from the fridge, preheat your oven to 180C.

Tear off a 60cm (rough guide) piece of baking and two sheets of foil, each around 80cms.

Lay the foil on your bench, overlap the two pieces in the centre so that you have an extra-wide, strong foil base, place the sheet of baking paper down, arrange the shallots in the centre of the baking paper, remove the lamb from the container and place on top of the shallots, pour over most of the residual marinade.

Start by blanketing the lamb with the layer of baking paper, then using the foil, wrap and enclose the shoulder tightly. Place on a tray and into the oven to bake for 3 hours - you will know it's done when you insert a fork through the foil and into the lamb, twist the fork if there's no resistance from the lamb, it's ready to go. Increase the heat to 200 C, unwrap the foil and paper to expose the top 2/3rds of the lamb and place back in the oven for 10 -15 minutes to brown. Remove and leave to rest for at least 30 minutes.

Whilst the lamb is resting, chop your herbs, get your arils and a large serving platter ready.

Place the lamb & the cooked shallots on the platter, top with fresh herbs, pomegranate, and finally, the curd, serve immediately.

We suggest serving with a very simple green salad and perhaps some potatoes made just the way you like them, after all, it's your dish now!

50 YEARS OF ITALY IN OUR VERY OWN BACKYARD, IT’S DEFINITELY A VIBE.

Back in 1972, when Imma and Mario Caparaso founded their humble little continental delicatessen on St Bernards Road in Rostrevor, they probably never imagined Adelaide would fall so hopelessly in love with their authentic Italian fare. But we did. And thanks to our fanatical and enduring loyalty to their business, that little family-run shop has grown to become something of a cultural empire in Campbelltown – Mercato.

Ah, Mercato. Wandering through this Mediterranean foodie wonderland is akin to being magically transported to ‘Bel Paese”, the beautiful country of Italy. Your senses are soon overjoyed by a vast palate of sights and aromas. Wheels of parmesan bigger than car tyres. Spectacular legs of prosciutto, pasta for days and buckets of olives bobbing in brine and oils. And then there are the sounds. Clattering. Singing. Probing questions and passionate responses in English and Italian dialects. At first, one is filled with a sense of wonder and inspiration, such is the range of mouth-watering items on the shelves! But before long, there’s a palpable sense of excitement, a deep longing to want to get home and open your prosecco, start cooking that sugo, break open that alpine cheese, devour those olives, tear apart that freshly baked focaccia and plunge it into the purest of Italian extra virgin olive oils.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find it all completely irresistible. And Mercato’s range is hardly limited to food. The shop also has a superb range of kitchenware, glassware, cookbooks and Italian newspapers (that can’t actually read but certainly have a good go at pretending can). I am sure I have fooled the odd passer-by into thinking am fluent.

Of course, I have only skimmed the surface – Mercato is like a beautiful onion. Each new aisle is like another layer, waiting to be peeled away, revealing something unexpected. 50 years of love and commitment has produced a shopping experience beyond compare, delivering the very best in authentic Italian food and wine, all wrapped up in one very cool, old school, but thoroughly modern location.

MERCATO OPENING HOURS

(Open 7 days a week):

Mon-Fri 7:30am to 6:30pm

Sat-Sun 7:30am to 5pm

Public Holidays 9am to 3pm

Bar Mercato Kitchen 7:30am to 2:30pm 25-627 Lower North East Rd, Campbelltown

And while you’re there, make sure to stop off at the Mercato Bar and Kitchen for one of their special (I deserve a moment in Italy) treats, snacks or meals. There’s an outstanding selection of beverages too including wines, spirits and – not surprisingly – espressos to die for. There are also the regular offerings of unique yet very affordable events that include collaborations, wine tastings, masterclasses and cooking lessons (everything from pizzas to panettone) taught by culinary leaders. There really is something for everyone.

In fact, the hardest thing about Mercato… is leaving.

Molto bene Mercato! Here’s to all that was, all that is and all that is still to come.

For the 2023 event, two of South Australia’s top sommeliers will join the Tasting Australia creative team in the role of Drinks Curators. Banjo Harris Plane and Meira Harel – husband and wife duo – will lead the beverage program, taking the helm from outgoing Drinks Curator Nick Stock.

The pair said it was an honour to join the team and continue the legacy left by former Drinks Curator Nick Stock.

“In our role as Drinks Curators, Banjo and I can’t wait to continue to showcase the state’s extensive beverage offering to the world and create an innovative drinks program that shines a light on local producers.”

Banjo looks forward to assembling an exciting line-up of beverage stars from across Australia and the globe.

Ghee whizz…

Lisa Ormenyessy didn't choose the Ghee life. The Ghee life chose her.

"Think of it like an avocado that you can cook with", is how Lisa, Founder of South Australian based, describes OMGhee. But, of course, its many uses and extensive properties far outweigh an eleven word sentence. OMGhee is in fact a powerhouse of organic, biodynamic good.

"I was recommended to eat ghee to reduce inflammation in my body," says Lisa. So Lisa tried ghee after ghee. Some tasted more like medicine than the inviting buttery flavour one can expect from a good Ghee. Lisa then began a one-woman mission and set out to develop the creamiest, healthiest and most delicious Ghee on the market.

Before I go any further, I should tell you a little about the star of this piece: Ghee.

Ghee is butter that has been cooked at low temperatures for a lengthy period of time, a process which transforms fatty acid chains and removes moisture.

During the process, the butter naturally separates, causing oils to rise to the top and solids to the bottom. Lisa continues this cooking process which caramelises those butter solids resulting in deeply flavoursome Ghee. But it doesn’t only taste amazing, this slow cooking method also makes the Ghee suitable for people who are lactose intolerant.

"What's left after we cook the butter for 12-14 hours is a good-tasting fat with incredible health benefits and unrivalled shelf stability".

South Australian made and owned OMGhee has a multitude of uses. However, if we’re talking mainstream for a moment, the key to Ghee is to treat it as you would butter. You can cook with it or fry with it. It’s excellent for high-heat cooking, so it won't burn. And it gives anything you cook in the pan—steaks, vegetables, mushrooms—a beautiful rich buttery taste.

Saute with it. Use it for baking. Add it to your coffee or smoothies. You can pop your popcorn with it or spread it on your toast. In fact, just about anything that butter can do, ghee can do better!

OmGhee is Australia's only organic, biodynamic, grassfed ghee and is proudly made using the finest 100% Australian organic, grass-fed butter.

By now, I imagine you’re thinking, ‘where can I find this OMGhee?’

I’m glad you asked. A full list of stockists is available on the OMGhee website. So try it. Because I’m sure you will love it!

Easy Drinking

Nick Stock is one of Australia’s most wellknown and highlyregarded wine critics.

He opened McLaren Vale’s hottest new beach front bar and restaurant the Silver Sands Beach Club earlier this year.

The warmer weather is finally here and that means entertaining heads outdoors and swings into classic South Australian summer vibes. We cook and eat such diverse flavours in SA and our culinary influences are so eclectic that the possibilities for wine matching are almost endless.

But beyond the tried and tested food and wine matching combinations, we have evolved our thinking and drinking to consider the style of the occasion and the season when taking cues as to what to drink. Our best winemakers have also honed in on making wines that best suit where they are grown and how they are enjoyed. Good times!

Conjure up about cleverly curated dining tables, choose celebratory bottles, seek out sun-drenched beachside drops and wines to sip at sunset with sandy toes on the deck. You’ll find that there’s a new breed of highly drinkable, delicious, casual styles of wine on offer that are so easily matched to all these occasions and more.

This season the classic whites (like riesling, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay) are in career best form and there’s a new breed of white wine out there to discover too. Explore the alternative whites with real confidence as winemakers have worked so hard over the past decade to get these just right.

Rosé is one very hotly contested category and winemakers have refined their repertoire towards light pinks and smooth, dry styles that are inspired by Mediterranean living and dining. Don’t worry about which grapes they have used, just look for the style you like and hone right in. You’ll have more options than your fridge can handle.

Fizzy drinks now come in so many styles and the buzz around crisp light fizz is about as fun as wine gets. Explore pet nats, prosecco and local sparkling options instead of the discounted big brand Champagnes. There’s much better quality in our local stuff these days.

And don’t forget reds! It’s a-ok to drink red wine in summer and there are so many great examples of fresh, juicy and lighter reds like grenache and pinot noir that are actually great with a quick spell in the fridge or esky to take them down a degree or two.

See you at the beach!

Nick

EWENS PONDS IN THE SOUTH-EAST

Experience the crystal clear, springfed limestone waters of Ewens Ponds Conservation Park. Three large ponds, with a maximum depth of 10m, flow towards the coast, boasting such outstanding visibility that it feels like you’re drifting in zero gravity. As you glide through the clear waters, keep an eye out for freshwater bream, Glenelg River crayfish, eels, and the tiny Ewens Ponds pygmy perch. Spot freshwater plants, some growing to 6m! Snorkelers need to keep their fins on the surface to protect fragile pond vegetation.

OK, so this one isn’t in summer but it’s world-famous, a huge bucket-list tick and only in South Australia. Every winter along the coast in the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park near Whyalla, hundreds of thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish congregate to mate. Swimming out over the rock ledges, you suddenly see a flash, like the sun glittering off a metallic object in the distance. It’s not long before you realise you are surrounded by huge yet incredibly graceful Giant Australian Cuttlefish – the larger males measuring over 60cm long and weighing 5kg! Watching these males putting on incredible shows, pulsating through all the colours of the rainbow at the blink of an eye, is just sensational. EMS hosts Cuttlefest snorkel tours to see them every July.

Snorkelling is a wonderful way to explore South Australia’s unique marine life and also get moving in our world-class marine parks, around our jetties and reefs, and off our beaches. Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries has compiled a list of fantastic locations across our coastline to explore this summer.

At the jetty stair entry, you’ll be welcomed by large schools of sweep, silver drummer, leatherjackets, and zebrafish. As you move along the reef, search for crabs, rays, reef fish, squid (and maybe even a dolphin or seadragon).

Along the beach entry areas, look for bright orange sea stars, crabs, bream, dusky morwong, rays, and if you’re lucky, around November, you may see a harmless Port Jackson shark. (So cute they’re also called the puppies of the sea.)

If you are into history and shipwrecks, then a snorkel at Port Willunga Beach is a must. Being a 600m walk up the beach and a 120m swim out to the 5m-deep wreck site, it is for advanced snorkelers. While out on the wreck, keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and reef fish.

SMOOTH POOL ON THE EYRE PENINSULA

Located on the rugged West Coast, near Streaky Bay, Smooth Pool is a safe and enclosed large rockpool that is more like swimming in an aquarium. Swim amongst a fantastic variety of colourful reef fish and plant life. The blue groper is one of the star attractions, along with large schools of zebrafish..

GAWLER

A short drive north of the city, you can immerse yourself in the Port Gawler mangrove forest, an important nursery area and habitat for an amazing variety of fish, crabs, and plant life. Located within the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary National Park / Winaityinaityi Pangkara and Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, the mangroves are a truly magical place to snorkel and take in the scenery – above and below the water. Marvel at the mangroves and their upwardgrowing roots called ‘pneumatophores’, which help them to take in oxygen. Underwater, keep your eyes peeled for small sea stars, crabs, sea squirts, sea anemones, fish, prawns, and rays.

Take a scenic drive down to Second Valley, a small coastal town and beach north of Rapid Bay. Enter from the beach and swim across seagrass and sandy patches alive with reef fish, colourful sea stars, and squid. Off the jetty, look for eagle rays, blue groper, and elusive seadragons.

BEFORE YOU DIVE IN

IF YOU’RE NEW TO SNORKELLING OR DON’T OWN EQUIPMENT, WE RECOMMEND BOOKING WITH A SNORKEL TOUR GROUP LIKE THE NOT-FOR-PROFIT EMS - EXPERIENCING MARINE SANCTUARIES.

Its accredited guides, shore and vessel support, extra floatation devices, snorkel gear and safety protocols ensure a safe and supervised snorkel tour.

For those seeking a little more before venturing into the ocean, EMS runs regular ‘Pool Snorkel 101’ classes that teach the basics and build your confidence.

When planning a snorkel, check weather and sea conditions, be sunsmart, pack ample water, snacks, and well-maintained snorkel gear. Wear a wetsuit, always snorkel with a buddy, let someone know your snorkel entry/exit point and when you plan to return.

A dive flag on a float and a cutting tool are also essential for safety, as is a first aid kit and charged mobile phone.

Overland adventure to Melbourne

Jane Reilly recently enjoyed travelling by train, between Melbourne and Adelaide, aboard The Overland while savouring the comforts and romance of rail.

Given the choice between flying or taking a train, I’ll always take the train option.

Especially with recent news stories of long delays at airports and lost luggage, it was a very easy decision to catch the Overland to Melbourne to visit my son on Mother’s Day. These days, it’s a daytime journey and it runs twice weekly from Adelaide on Sundays and Thursdays.

Right on eight o’clock, my train pulled out from the Adelaide Parklands Terminal, and I settled back into my very comfortable seat for the next nine hours. It was absolutely glorious as we climbed up through the Adelaide Hills. There was so much to take in, from the vibrant autumn colours of the Hills trees to quaint stone cottages, and a light morning mist drifting across the valleys, I felt like I was in a different place. Fellow passengers commented that the Hills’ ascent equalled travelling through the Blue Mountains into Sydney. Having purchased a Red Premium ticket, I sat back and enjoyed a delicious breakfast while watching the ever-changing scenery.

Our first stop was Murray Bridge, where several new passengers boarded our train. We continued our relaxing journey eastwards, passing through Bordertown, then through the lush Wimmera district of Victoria. Looking around me, I kept on thinking how very lucky we are to live in such a beautiful and peaceful country.

As we journeyed towards Melbourne, lunch was served by the wonderful carriage staff – more beautiful food, this time enjoyed with a glass of wine. Mid-afternoon, it was time to have a snooze, then all too soon we were passing through Geelong and the outskirts of Melbourne.

As we pulled into the Southern Cross Station, right in the heart of Melbourne, there was my gorgeous son, Edward, waiting on the platform for me.

What a perfect ending to my adventure.

Birds of a feather

Cumberland Park couple Amanda and Eden Cartwright are behind the creative studio, Bird Circus. As well as working in graphic design and illustration, the duo has just launched a line of greeting cards with an eco focus. We chatted to them about all things design.

TELL US THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS’S NAME.

Amanda: Eden is an avid birdwatcher, and when we met, his love of birds was contagious.

Nine years ago, when our daughter was born and we were outgrowing our house, we built a beautiful home studio, looking out onto our backyard.

We encourage lots of birds into the yard with native plants and water bowls, and we are very lucky to be visited by a variety of beautiful birds. Watching them can be mesmerising and it’s almost like they are performing for us. It can be very acrobatic at times. Hence the name, Bird Circus!

ALONG WITH YOUR GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION WORK, YOU RECENTLY UNVEILED YOUR OWN GREETING CARDS. WHAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE?

Amanda: Eden has been drawing birds since he was a young child and has never stopped. He is always creating beautiful drawings for his own enjoyment, as well as for clients, and turning them into a range of cards was a natural progression.

Earlier this year, we released three card sets, which are all naturebased and come in sets of four. They include Australian parrots, marine species, and Australian fauna with their young.

Eden also has a degree in environmental science and is very passionate about the environment and conservation. So, we have included a ‘did you know’ fact on the back of each card about the animal featured.

This makes the cards unique as we are also providing a fun, informative fact about what makes each of these animals so special and amazing.

YOU’RE KEEN BIRDWATCHERS TOO. CAN YOU SHARE ANY INTERESTING PLACES YOU'VE DONE THIS AND SOME TIPS FOR SPOTTING BIRDS?

Eden: We’ve visited some amazing and varying habitats to birdwatch over the years. Some of our favourite areas in Australia include Danggali Conservation Park [SA], Hattah-Kulkyne National Park [in Victoria], Springbrook National Park [Queensland], and the Grampians.

Some of the memorable and rarer birds we’ve seen include the Australasian bittern, grey falcon, and orange-bellied parrot.

Memorable sightings overseas have been the secretary bird in Tanzania, puffins in the Shetland Islands, and the northern royal albatross and saddleback in New Zealand.

Some tips for successful birdwatching are to move slowly and quietly, or even standing still in various spots for a few minutes at a time, and wearing neutral-coloured or low-contrasting clothes.

AMANDA, YOU’RE 44, AND EDEN’S 57. HOW DOES THE AGE DIFFERENCE ENRICH YOUR PARTNERSHIP?

Amanda: I get to hear all the popular culture of the 1960s and 1970s!

Eden: I’m kept young.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT CREATING OR BIRDWATCHING, WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY?

Amanda: We love hiking, kayaking, and getting out into nature. We also have a very active nine-year-old, who keeps us very busy. We love going to the beach and building sandcastles together, finishing off with a delicious ice cream, of course.

We’re also partial to scooter-riding and rollerblading; Eden prefers the more retro option of roller-skating.

THE VALUE OF OUR 50s

5AA

I recently walked into a restaurant for lunch where a helpful young lady invited me to order my meal from my table, with an incentive of a 20% discount.

“That’s great”, I said, thinking they must not want queues of patrons lining up at the counter and offer the discount as a means of embracing the technology. So I sat down, scanned the barcode and placed my order but to my surprise, a discount failed to appear on the bill.

The food and drinks came and later the same waitress came to clean up the table.

“The discount you mentioned didn’t appear on my phone when I ordered”, I said.

“Oh?”, she asked. “It should automatically pop up when you include your Seniors Card number.”

Slight pause.

Yeah, nah. Not old enough yet, love, so I thanked her for her service and off she went. Let’s face it, at 18, she very likely thinks Justin Bieber is old.

On reflection, while I can certainly wait, I look forward to applying for a Seniors Card. After all, how can one not be excited about cheaper electricity, free public transport and pharmacy store discounts?

As a teenager, I’d compare my age to sporting identities, footballers, cricketers, tennis players and the like who always seemed to be some five to 10 years older and I’d think there was still time to get to that elite level. I’m not sure how, as I wouldn’t even bother to run for a bus but it was always nice to think I could’ve turned to sport as a career, if I had the motivation. Then one day, my age matched theirs and eventually surpassed it, so that dream, somewhat thankfully, faded. Years have passed and I still don’t run for a bus and if I did, I’m sure I’d lope as gracefully as a 3-legged giraffe with a dicky ankle. Next, I matched up my age with business-people

and politicians who at the time were older and again, I’d think there’s plenty of time to gain the skills to climb that greasy pole. Now, I’ve overtaken many in age and am level-pegging with others except, of course, Joe Biden but on that score, Methuselah, at some 900 biblical years old is still younger than Joe. Heck, the planet is younger than Joe.

“Those of us fortunate enough to have reached our 50’s know age really is just a number. We are comfortable in our skin, having made our mistakes and learning along the way how to fix them.”

US Presidents aside, those of us fortunate enough to have reached our 50’s know age really is just a number. We are comfortable in our skin, having made our mistakes and learning along the way how to fix them. We’ve made friends, lost friends and made new friends. We’ve raised a family and become better people through parenthood, won promotions through hard work and paid off a mortgage, or are close to it. We’ve learned we don’t know the level of pain another person may be feeling and to treat others as if we are the others. We know relationships constantly need work and there’s sometimes more satisfaction in enjoying a coffee and watching the world pass by on a sunny day than sipping a scotch in a room full of strangers yelling at each other over blaring music. We know education is important but not the be all and end all. People say these are some of the lessons we should be able to pass on to our younger selves, but I think far greater value comes from living the experience.

Yes, the 50s may come with reading glasses, increasingly dodgy knees and a growing interest in superannuation statements but what we gain along the way is, in the words of the ad, priceless and I’m happy with the value of that without any level of discount.

MARGRETE: QUEEN OF THE NORTH

(MARGRETE

DEN FØRSTE) (MA)

Amid the complex negotiations, a traumatised man (Jakob Oftebro) appears claiming to be Oluf and stating that he’s been imprisoned for 15 years, and while Margrete initially insists that he can’t possibly be her son, she’s later not so sure. And, of course, are persons unknown using him to destabilise the fragile alliance?

MUST-READ BOOKS

Take a look at the latest and greatest titles across a range of genres, from fiction to nonfiction, from romance to crime.

Co-writer/director Charlotte Sieling’s historical drama features a powerful performance by Trine Dyrholm and some gorgeous cinematography, and yet it doesn’t quite hit the classic heights.

Shot in the Czech Republic, this opens in 1402 with Denmark’s Queen Margrete (Trine) having established a peaceful union between her country, Norway, and Sweden. She rules alongside young King Erik (Morten Hee Andersen), whom she adopted years ago after the mysterious death of her son Oluf, and to further ensure that Denmark has plenty of support if Germany invades, a marriage is set up between Erik and the younger Phillippa of England (Diana Martinová).

There are elements here that stick out (including an incidental character that the subtitles list as ‘Roar the pirate’, who sounds like he’s from TV’s Blackadder), and yet director Sieling’s sweeping drama works anyway, with, as expected, a pointed edge that, perhaps, is intended as a direct commentary upon contemporary politics.

The strange story of the ‘false Oluf’ is also worth researching in detail, but please: look it up on Wikipedia after you see the movie.

MARGRETE: QUEEN OF THE NORTH is showing at Wallis and Palace Nova Cinemas.

OVERREACH : THE INSIDE STORY OF PUTIN’S WAR AGAINST UKRAINE OWEN MATTHEWS

An astonishing deep dive into the war in Ukraine – from the corridors of the Kremlin to the trenches of Mariupol.

The Russo-Ukrainian War is the most serious geopolitical crisis since the Second World War – and yet at the heart of the conflict is a mystery. Vladimir Putin lurched from a calculating, subtle master of opportunity to a reckless gambler, putting his regime – and Russia itself – at risk of destruction. Why?

SUMMER READS

Bridge of Clay

Bridge of Clay follows the lives of the five Dunbar boys. At the heart of the novel, and of the Dunbar family, is Clay, a boy who will build a bridge with the father who abandoned them soon after their mother died.

Clay was the closest to his father, and as the story unfolds, we discover that he was fully aware of why his father left them.

I liked the structure of the story with its ‘before the beginnings’ and the ‘beginnings’ that Markus Zusak (Sydney author of The Book Thief) uses to reveal more about the present through the past as the story progressed.

And I really appreciated the often-poetic language Zusak uses to describe places and characters. One example that describes the father: He was a wasteland in a suit; he was bent-postured, he was broken.

In this story there are fights and arguments; a mule and several other adopted animals. There is tenderness, hope, love, death and grieving, and redemption. Clay’s bridge brings the family together, it brings pasts and presents together, and for Clay, it is restorative for the tragedies he has endured.

RRP $22.99 Pan Macmillan

Bruny

This is the fifth book from Australian author Heather Rose.

At the centre of the story is the bombing of a bridge not yet finished between the Tasmanian mainland and Bruny Island. The building of the bridge is the catalyst for protest groups, election promises, conspiracies and foreign labour.

The narrator, Astrid, has returned home to Tasmania after an international career to help her brother the Premier negotiate with the many protest groups. Astrid discovers many secrets and lies about the project and to add more interest the leader of the state Opposition is their sister.

A book about political satire, a tale about climate change, globalisation and backroom deals, this book captivated me with its themes of everyday life.

At times I didn’t know if I was reading a novel or the daily newspaper, so close to today’s politics it is. In this new world China is Australia’s newest ally, and a right-wing US President has withdrawn America from the Middle East and from the UN. The Australian Federal government is involved with secrets and American spies and its unperturbed policy of the Chinese buying Australian land and allowing their workforce to repair the bridge. The pursuit of power, labour hire and unionism are the main themes with a little love interest and an affair to lighten the tale.

An enjoyable and easy read that also manages to be informative and enlightening.

AUSTRALIA ACCORDING TO HOGES PAUL HOGAN

As Hoges says, ‘We’re not perfect, but we’re working on it’. Paul Hogan’s ancestors were a couple of Irish blow-ins who arrived in the colony of New South Wales by boat, with a little assistance from the judges of the Old Bailey. Blow-ins from everywhere have been coming ever since, and while it hasn’t always been a walk in the park, Hoges reckons this mixed-up mob of old and new inhabitants works most of the time. In fact, according to Hoges, Australia may well be the best country on earth.
