WINNING FORMULA FOR SA BUSINESS

I’ve always loved summer...

Partly this is because I’m one of those people who is perennially cold. I have to wear a jumper in the refrigerator section of the supermarket and a 30 degree day is just barely warm enough for me to change into a t-shirt. So, needless to say, when the hot weather really hits, I’m in my element.

Another reason I love summer is because I now have three primary school aged children and it’s the only time of year I get to extricate them from the arms of the education system and have them all to myself for an extended period of time. Sure, sometimes that means I’m yelling at them to make their own snacks from my computer while I try to get some work done (working with kids on school holidays presents a unique set of challenges—this magazine doesn’t write itself!), but I’ve always been one of those parents who prefers the school holidays to the school term regardless. We’ve all heard the adage “you only get 18 summers with your kids”. I'm loath to repeat it because it makes me tight in the chest to even think about, but it is something that looms at the back of my mind with every year my kiddos get older. Let’s be honest though, if the upward trend of housing prices continues, we might all end up

/2

with more like 27 summers with our kids. With all that said, this issue we had the summer holidays on the brain. We wanted to make sure all those with school aged kids (and younger!) knew all the coolest and most fun things in Adelaide to do with kids at this time of year, so you can check out our ultimate guide to the school hollies. And while you’re hitting the beach or the park, we’ve also found the absolute coolest SPF for your fam; a business founded by two mum besties who grew up in Adelaide! Check out our feature on People of the Earth to find out more about this super sun smart, shiny and sustainable brand. We also chatted with Adelaide artist, model and podcast host Susie Collins about the recent birth of her little girl Peach, and the unique experience she had with her best friend (who also happens to be Hollywood/Aussie actor and mum-of-5 Teresa Palmer) who acted as her birth support. Their story is a heartwarming testament to the strength of trust, love, and friendship in one of the most transformative moments of a woman’s life. To our KIDDO community, we send warm wishes for a magical summer and plenty of Christmas cheer (and maybe a glass of champagne or three if that's your thing). We're looking forward to coming back next year to do it all over again!

SHOP SUSTAINABLY AT NICE RACK

SHE WILL

Tucked away on Seacombe Road in a charming row of local shops you’ll find Nice Rack, which just so happens to be the cutest thrift store we ever-did-see! We had the pleasure of sitting down with owner, Bessie Ferrante, who shared the journey behind this vintage venture. "Because we live locally, we were aware of these shops on Seacombe Road, and I had an idea over a year ago to combine my love for thrifting with the location,” Bessie told us. “My partner was also the manager of the coffee shop, Molly Mawk, two doors down, so he mentioned it to the landlord, and voilà, after about a year of waiting, we heard the dog wash lady was retiring, so we jumped on the opportunity." Nice Rack isn't just about offering secondhand items; it's about showcasing quality and sustainability. Through Instagram story sales and reels, Bessie spreads the word that everything in stock is well-cared for and comes at a fraction of the price you'd find in traditional shops. A devoted thrifter and aficionado of all things from the '70s and '80s, Bessie has infused the store with a vintage vibe, think quirky prints, charming wallpaper, and a counter crafted from preloved breeze blocks. The shop exudes a relaxed atmosphere, with a thoughtfully curated selection that won't leave shoppers feeling overwhelmed.

As part of supporting the local community, Nice Rack features a section dedicated to local makers, featuring handmade products such as organic teas, quality bibs, mushroom powders for health benefits, men's beard oil, handmade ceramics, natural deodorants, and more. The South Brighton community and its surroundings have welcomed Nice Rack with open arms. "I think almost every day at least one person comes in saying, 'Thank you for putting something good in this strip of shops and building up the community. And with Molly Mawk coffee two doors down, customers can grab a coffee and then cruise into us for a thrift." Bessie says.

Below: Nice Rack owner Bessie with her partner Jay and son Santino.

A wide array of brands and items—some still new with tags— ensure there’s something for everyone, catering not only to adults but also to little ones. There’s an ever-rotating stock of kids’ clothes and shoes, and the store even boasts a kids’ play area, much to the delight of parents who can shop in peace. Bessie also practises what she preaches, vowing not to buy new clothing for a year and promoting sustainability in parenting, along with encouraging others to see the value in buying secondhand.

Bessie’s tips for successful thrifting

• • • • •

Look for quality natural fabrics, go for cottons and linens. They last longer, don't seem to go out of fashion, and hold their value. Thrift for your newborn baby; it's always in near-new, if not new with tag condition! Take your time; you must have time when thrifting. Some preloved shops can be cluttered or not sized or categorised; this means you will need time to sift and really go through each piece. Shop for all year round, just because it’s summer do not disregard a quality winter item. And don't go looking for something specific— be open-minded. If you find a pair of shoes that are the right size when thrifting, don't question it; just buy them. It's a match made in heaven, it's rare, and it's the thrifting god's speaking to you directly. /6

Montessori Preschool makes sense! The Hills Montessori School has been operating in the Adelaide Hills for over forty years, fostering the curiosity of children in their educational programs. Located in a bush setting with two campuses - the preschool and primary campus in Aldgate and the middle school campus in Stirling. The Hills Montessori School offers an education based on the Montessori philosophy of respect for self, others and the environment by fostering a love of learning and commitment to community. Of particular interest is The Hills Montessori Preschool, a unique program designed for families looking for a school that will give their child a quality start to their learning, in a nurturing environment. The curriculum has an emphasis on early literacy and numeracy skills, as well as experiences in geography, history, biology and art. Specialist staff take students in key learning areas such as Music, Physical Education, Library and Indonesian. The Preschool’s ‘practical life curriculum’ helps children develop concentration and independence in activities such as food preparation, cleaning and looking after the natural world. Students have access to a beautifully renovated outdoor bush play area with places to climb and explore, or for quieter time children can enjoy calming nooks and peaceful seating areas, meander through the native gardens, play chefs in the mud kitchen or retreat to the tee pee cubby area. When students reach the age of 4.5 years, they are invited to join the Extended Day program. This is an extension of the Preschool program and is focused on promoting collaboration between teachers, families and students to facilitate a smooth transition from Preschool to Primary School. transition activities between the Preschool and Cycle 1 Primary (Reception/ Year 1) happen regularly. Principal Cathy France said: “The move from Preschool to Primary School can be an exciting time for children, but it can also be a daunting experience with challenges presented not only in the changing physical environment but also in their academic, social and emotional experiences. The Extended Day Program is excellent preparation for the child prior to starting the Primary Program which can have lasting effects on their learning and development”. A private tour with one of the heads of school, principal Cathy France or assistant principal Susan Harris Evans, is an excellent way to see first-hand the opportunities provided by the Preschool environment.

OPIN ION

My youngest has just finished primary school. And I’m still crying. It marks the end of a 13 year connection with the school which has educated and cared for our three daughters. There’s something special about primary school. From the first day of Reception, when you drop them off in tears and their backpacks are bigger than they are. Then you’re in the classroom helping them with their readers and making sure the teacher knows your name and you accumulate brownie points for the days when you forget to pack their lunch/return an excursion form/what time school starts and finishes etc. And there will be many of those days from R-6. The primary school era is also when you lock in your parent friends. And it’s a jungle out there in the pick-up/drop-off zone. On the youngest’s first day I was dressed in activewear (isn’t that drop-off uniform?!) and another Mum looked me up and down and said “I was going to wear activewear but I thought since it was their first day I should make an effort.” I like to enter the class group chat and find the parents asking all the questions like “is it Harmony Day today, I can’t seem to find the Seesaw notice.” These are my people. The Hot Mess Parents. Then there are the parents who have wine in a thermos at Christmas Carols and extra room on their picnic rug. These are my people. The Let’s Drink Our Way Through the Nativity Scene and Pick up our Cars in the Morning Parents. Although I will say that it’s useful to have at least one Organised Parent in your circle. The one who texts you to let you know Kmart has yellow t-shirts on sale ahead of Sports Day. And also that you need a yellow t-shirt for Sports Day. But, the catch is, you need to make sure this person is not a Judgy Parent who will tell other parents that you didn’t know you needed a yellow t-shirt for Sports Day. The Non-Judgy Organised Parents are the unicorns of primary school. Then, in the time it’s taken to find your tribe, the kids hit high school. High school is different.

The little cherubs don’t want to be walked in. Or to be seen within a Covid-safe distance of you. They want drop-off and pick-up to be as anonymous as possible. Like they’re Blair Waldorf and I’m their driver. And there are too many variables to keep across in high school. Who do they have for English? What are their electives? Who are they sitting with at recess and lunch? What are their hopes and dreams? Will there be wine and snacks at P&F events?

The school friends I have kept in touch with over the past three decades are weighing up whether to turn up. Life is busy, life moves on. But I think I’ll go. There is still so much to unpack from the Year 10 ski trip. And there will be drinks and snacks.

I’m thinking about my own high school days more than usual at the moment. As it is time for MY THIRTY YEAR REUNION. THIRTY YEARS. I only feel thirty. In fact, some days I still feel like an approval-seeking high school student. I’m apprehensive. No matter how many years have passed, and what you have achieved there’s something about seeing your old schoolmates that makes you regress to the quadrangle. I didn’t love school. My dress was always a bit long and I didn’t have the right shoes. I had long brown curly hair and when I decided to cut a fringe, the curls just gathered in one big mass in the middle of my forehead which was not the Jennie Garth circa 1990 look I was going for. So what is the purpose of a school reunion? Especially after so long. Is it to reconnect? To reminisce about the best and worst teachers or what happened on the ski trip? Is it to tell someone THEY HAVEN’T CHANGED A BIT although you both know you have changed a lot, both

inside and out. Is it to say we must catch up more often, when you know that another 10 years will pass you by?

WATER SAFETY EDUCATION

O

W

Kat shares her top 5 tips on keeping our young ones safer on the roads these holidays. 1. CHECK THAT YOUR CHILD’S RESTRAINT IS

SECURE, AND THEIR HARNESS IS FIRMLY FASTENED. I won’t sugar-coat this. Land transport accidents are the leading cause of death in Australian children, and the leading cause of injury related hospitalisations. What’s worse, is that while the majority of us think we’ve nailed it when it comes to using our child restraint…stats suggest up to 80% of us are getting it wrong.

So, before every drive, I want you to check a few things: Is your tether strap connected properly? • Are the ISOFIX/seat belt connections pulled tight? • Is your child’s harness fitting firmly against their body, without twists? Given the sobering statistics above, it always pays to have your restraint installed or given the once over by a professional fitter, and I highly recommend the team at KidSafe SA. The Pinch Test To check your child’s harness is tight enough, do the pinch test.

Pinch your child’s harness strap just below their collar bone. If you are able to gather the strap between your fingers, the harness is too loose and you need to tighten it.

A firm fitting harness should have no slack when you pinch it. / 14

Each year, more than 5000 Australian children are rescued from hot cars

2. SAVE THE SNACKS FOR OUTSIDE THE CAR.

Parenting and cars-it’s a daily battle against the onslaught of rock collections, sand, craft treasures and other unidentifiable objects residing in the deep, dark depths of our back seat crevices. Adding mashed banana and cheese sticks to the mix? Let’s spare ourselves the torture! But beyond the mess, eating in the car is also risky. Choking is silent, and with your eyes on the road, you won’t see it happen either- especially if your little one is rearward facing. Feed them beforehand, stash a snack for the destination, or plan pit stops for longer drives.

3. PLAN DRIVING BREAKS

Many of us will be venturing across the state to catch up with friends and family. If you’re road-tripping with the crew, don’t forget the golden rule: Stop. Revive. Survive. There’s only so many games of “eye spy” that your kids (and no doubt yourself) can tolerate. Boredom can lead to fidgeting with the seatbelts, or other distracting behaviours which can make driving a real challenge. Take a break at least every 2 hours to stretch those legs and let the kids burn off some energy. And for our littlest passengers, it’s even more important that they aren’t left in their capsules/restraints for extended periods. Younger infants can end up in the risky “chin to chest” position, leading to trouble breathing. Proper restraint installation at the correct recline will also help minimise the chin to chest positioning.

4. MINIMISE DIRECT SUN EXPOSURE ON YOUR CHILD’S RESTRAINT WHEN PARKED

Hot cars come hand in hand with hot days. But did you know that direct sunlight can turn some parts of your car, like your child’s restraint buckles, into a blistering 80°C? While that’s well and truly burn territory for an adult, it’s significantly worse for little ones as they have thinner skin and no escape once buckled in. Even the cloth part of their restraint can become a burn risk when left exposed in the sun! To play it safe, park in the shade whenever you can. Reflective window shades are lifesavers for those shadeless spots. Chucking a white sheet or towel over the restraint also helps minimise the sun’s scorching effects (just remember to remove it when your child is strapped in). Another option is to crank the aircon in your car 5 minutes before everyone hops in. Alternatively, you can place ice packs in their seats for a quick cool downagain, remember to remove them before your child gets in!

5. NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED IN THE CAR.

Gosh, if there is any tip I wish I could shout from the rooftops with a megaphone, this is it. Each year, more than 5000 Australian children are rescued from hot cars. On a warm sunny day, the inside of a parked car can skyrocket up to 40°C hotter than the outside temperature, with much of this spike occurring within the first 5 minutes. Even on cloudy days, the car interior can reach fatal temperatures for a child. With their little body’s ability to heat up 3-5 times faster than an adults, our young ones are particularly vulnerable to heat stroke and dehydration. So, take them out with you every time, even for quick stops.

With the latest predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) indicating that the Australian 2023/2024 Summer and Spring seasons are likely to experience extreme heat conditions, it goes without saying many families will be seeking to cool down at local beaches, rivers, and pools (both public swim centres and backyard pools). This presents a unique opportunity to address and educate as many families in the community as possible about water safety and drowning prevention. The Royal Life Saving (RLS) National Drowning report for 2023 has provided the aquatic industry with crucial information that can help educate the community about the significance of continuous water safety and education. Over the past decade, the summer months of December, January and February have consistently seen the highest percentage of national drownings accounting for 38% of all such incidents. A particularly alarming statistic from the report is the 21% increase in the drowning deaths in SA in 2022/23 compared to the ten-year average, with 18% of those drowning victims being children aged 0-9 years old. This is a statistic we cannot afford to ignore. At Blue Dolphin Swim Centre, our program philosophy and commitment is centred

F E AT U R E

around teaching children to swim efficiently and effortlessly through the water. We emphasise the importance of control, balance and ergonomic strokes that work in harmony with the water. While there is no way to ensure swimmers are drown-proof, these elements will undoubtedly better prepare swimmers to respond effectively in an emergency. As an industry we know that for every 10 metres swam in the pool is equivalent to 1 metre in open water environments, the ability to swim 100 metres in open water swimmers need to be able to swim 1km in the pool. This is the achievement at the end of our ‘Learn to Swim’ program.

The summer season brings added aquatic education programs such as Vacswim and Surf-Lifesaving. These programs can complement your child’s regular swimming lessons, offering an opportunity to consolidate and further practise their skills. It is now more crucial than ever to ensure that children continue to receive consistent education and practice. With the warmer weather approaching, we urge parents not

Tragically, sometimes children are left unattended by complete accident. During the holidays, routines tend to shift, so it’s super important to check the back seat every time you exit your car. Particularly in families with multiple kids, consider making it a habit to leave your phone or keys in the back seat somewhere. This way, every time you step out of the car, you’re prompted to check everyone is with you. For more information: safesprouts.com.au

SUN, SAND, AND SMOOTH SAILING The ultimate guide to packing for a family day at the beach

WORDS: Deanna Zacharia, The Sorted Home

Summer is here, and you know what that means – beach days with the family! There's nothing quite like the sun, sea, and sand to create fantastic memories with your loved ones. However, as we all know, a successful beach day requires some serious organisation to make sure it's all fun in the sun and not meltdowns in the sand! As a fellow beach-loving mum who is married to a kite surfer, I've been down this sandy path a time or two, and have mastered the art of organised beach outings. So, grab your sun hat, slather on some sunscreen, and let's get into the ultimate packing list for a stress-free summer day at the beach!

DEANNA’S MUST-HAVE BEACH PRODUCTS

To make your beach day trip a success, there are a few items you may want to invest in. They do require an initial expense-but will pay off big time in convenience!

PACKING ESSENTIALS First things first, you need to pack like a pro. A successful beach day lies in the preparation.

Sunday beach umbrella Timeless beach umbrellas with premium finishes. UPF 50+ premium fabric, water and fade resistant, exclusive prints, 100% cotton tassels. sundaysupply.co

Beach bag // Choose a spacious and water resistant beach bag with a pocket to keep things organised. Beach mat and towels // Oversized beach towels are a great option as they provide more room for lounging, as do sand free-beach mats. Sunscreen // It goes without saying, but don't forget the sunscreen and hats to keep your family's skin safe from those scorching rays. Swimsuits and rashies // Make sure everyone's swimsuits are packed and ready to go. Don't forget cover-ups for those post-swim strolls and beachside snacks. Extra clothes // Bringing a change of dry clothes for everyone is a lifesaver. Nobody wants to drive home in wet, sandy clothes! Beach toys // Keep the kids entertained with beach toys like buckets, shovels, and inflatable floaties. It's also a good idea to bring some sports balls, a cricket set, frisbee or boogie boards for some family fun. Beach chairs // Lightweight, foldable beach chairs can make lounging by the water so much more comfortable. Beach-ready baby supplies // If you have little ones, pack essentials like baby sunscreen, swim nappies, and a portable seat. Garbage bags // Keep the beach clean by bringing along a few garbage bags for your own waste.

We go above and Beyond

Beach cart A foldable cart with big, wide wheels is a musthave accessory for the beach this summer. Perfect for lugging all of your gear from the car to the shoreline, avoiding trips back and forth.

Waterproof Phone Pouch Protect your smartphone from water, sand, and sunscreen smudges with a waterproof pouch.

Sand-free beach mat A soft and lightweight beach mat that’s sand free! These mats filter sand and dirt, repel water and drink spills and easily fold into a small bag, making it the perfect addition for your beach day.

Coolcabanas tent There’s a reason it's called ‘the world’s best beach shelter’. This tent is incredibly easy to set up (2 mins), provides plenty of shade (double the shade of an umbrella) and is strong in the wind. Not to mention there are plenty of colours to choose from. Snack packs // Create individual snack packs with items like nuts, trail mix, and muesli bars. This way, everyone can grab their own favourite snacks when hunger strikes. Frozen treats // Freeze some yoghurt tubes, throw in some ice blocks, or frozen grapes to keep your family cool and satisfied. Hydration is key // Fill a few drink bottles with ice-cold water. Staying hydrated in the sun is crucial.

With the right gear, a well-stocked esky, and a bit of organisation, you can make sure your beach day is smooth, fun, and / 20 stress-free. Formula for success

This is why mumamoo have chosen to donate a portion of all online sales to Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia (PANDA) since launch, to support their free national hotline service for new and expectant parents. “The correlation between PND and shame around formula feeding is very real, which is why supporting PANDA is so important to us. We’re here to let mums know that breastfeeding is incredible if you can and want to do it - you should be supported in any way possible. But if you can't or choose not to - here is a premium Australian product that is scientifically developed to meet every nutritional requirement your baby needs,” she says.

WORDS: Liv Williams PHOTOS: Monica Cugnier

“WHEN A PARENT IS STRUGGLING WITH HOW TO FORMULA FEED, OR HAVE RUN OUT OF FORMULA SOONER THAN EXPECTED IT’S ONE OF THE 4 MUMAMOO MUMS ANSWERING THE CALLS AND EMAILS OF THE SOMETIMES PANICKED AND EMOTIONALLY VULNERABLE PARENTS.”

For anyone looking on, it would seem like the growth of South Australian infant formula company mumamoo has all the hallmarks of an overnight success story. The reality is of course much different as any of the 4 women gracing this issue's front cover would attest. From the 2 years of research and development before their eye-catching tins even landed shelfspace on independent grocery shelves around South Australia, to launching in the middle of a pandemic and scaling nationally through a cost-of-living crisis - the road to here and now has been as rocky as any entrepreneur worth their salt will understand.

Above: Mumaroo Directors - Kristina Scutella, Miriam Weir, Charlotte Chambers, (baby Cushla McNally) and Belinda Humphris.

That’s not to say the journey hasn’t been fun - the team are stronger than ever, galvanized by their recent wins at the 2023 South Australian Premier’s Business and Export Awards, winning both the Small Business of the Year award and prestigious major Business of the Year award.

“One of the fascinating - and equally concerning - things about the formula industry is the absolute lack of information available to new parents through the health system,” says Belinda. “We are often the first point of contact for mums especially, who have made the decision to use formula. Often it’s not what they planned, so they can be incredibly exhausted and overwhelmed,” Belinda explains.

To say it was unexpected would be an understatement. “We were absolutely humbled to win to be honest,” explains Belinda Humphris, Business Development Director. “South Australia has such a strong heritage of innovation and high-achieving businesses, it is incredible to think we are even close to being in the same league when the 4 of us still start our day working out what to put in our kids lunchboxes every morning,” Belinda laughs.

/ 22

For Belinda, her feeding story informs the ethos of the business today. Her daughter Kit, now a happy, healthy 10 year old was born with a congenital heart disease in Adelaide. Airlifted soon after birth to Melbourne for lifesaving surgery, Belinda’s entire pregnancy experience was beset with complications and fear she might lose her baby. Kit Bate, Belinda's daughter

The focus on family is in fact, integral to their success. Their intimate understanding of how parents shop, research, and want from a product right down to functional design - are all key to the incredible amount of consumer goodwill the brand has. When a parent is struggling with how to formula feed, or have run out of formula sooner than expected - it’s one of the 4 mumamoo mums answering the calls and emails of the sometimes panicked and emotionally vulnerable parents.

It’s something mumamoo is passionate about, guided by their own experiences as new mums. With over 96% of new mums initiating breastfeeding, the numbers fall dramatically by 3 months, with only 39% of all babies exclusively breastfed and about 15% by 5 months.*

The pressure to breastfeed was enormous, the weight of being encouraged to do the only thing she could do personally to help her baby was crushing, causing Belinda to spiral into anxiety when all she could produce under the stressful circumstances was a few drops of breastmilk. With all the focus on baby Kit, no one in their medical team even noticed Belinda slide into the depths of despair as anxiety and stress enveloped her. In all, it was a traumatic experience that still bears scars today and one that drives the whole team to do better by all women. “You could say we’re in the business of removing guilt,” Belinda says. “With the health system designed to stymie information around formula to protect breastfeeding rates, you end up with a complete void of information. This inevitably frames formula as a secondary, inferior option and saddles new mums with guilt and perpetuates the cycle of stigma and shame,” Belinda explains.

“NO-ONE REALLY TALKS ABOUT THE GRIEF WOMEN FEEL WHEN BREASTFEEDING DOESN’T WORK OUT OR WHEN YOU FINISH. IT’S SHOCKING TO US THAT WOMEN ARE STILL MADE TO FEEL AS AWFUL AS SOME OF THEM DO IN THOSE FORMATIVE MONTHS WHEN ESTABLISHING A BOND WITH BABY.”

While that seems logical and obvious to some, the 4 women can feel the impact of their message sitting at the very precipice of change as they tackle the system to undo years and years of societal expectations and attitudinal norms around women and feeding. “We field calls and emails on a neardaily basis from women who thank us for helping them feel less guilt around their choices,” Belinda explains. “No-one really talks about the grief women feel when breastfeeding doesn’t work out or when you finish. It’s shocking to us that women are still made to feel as awful as some of them do in those formative months when establishing a bond with baby. All parents deserve access to information and support - no matter what their feeding journey is… that includes better access to lactation services as it does the basics around choosing a formula,” Belinda says. With such clear messaging around support, it’s little wonder mumamoo has connected so strongly with its audience. “We are so grateful to receive these highly regarded awards, but knowing our customers are happy is truly the biggest reward. It’s a privilege for us to feed someone's baby, and we have a huge sense of responsibility to every parent that puts their trust in us,” Kristina Scutella, Cofounder & Operations Manager says. This sense of purpose resonates strongly through their reviews, where mumamoo almost feels like part of the family. “Our reviews are incredible!” Kristina exclaims.

“ONE OF THE FASCINATING AND EQUALLY CONCERNING THINGS ABOUT THE FORMULA INDUSTRY IS THE ABSOLUTE LACK OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO NEW PARENTS THROUGH THE HEALTH SYSTEM.”

“Some of them are incredibly detailed and talk to the pressure and guilt and shame some women go through until they felt like mumamoo gave them permission to use formula. As a team, we have sometimes been moved to tears by these raw and very real accounts…actual goosebumps!” she says. Making an impact in these womens’ lives fuels the passion the women have to change the conversation around support for new mums. With each new award comes a bigger platform to advocate for their customers. Most recently, mumamoo became the state winner for Accelerating Women in the 2024 Telstra Best of Business Awards. If they win in February, the scope to take their message even further grows as burgeoning interest in the brand extends beyond South Australia. “We are proudly South Australian,” Kristina states emphatically. “We know our success lies largely in the support we received at a retail level and a consumer one,” she explains. “We are so lucky in that South Australians have a strong history of getting behind local brands - it can’t really be said about other states. It’s incredibly special and we hope to one day make it to the same echelon as some of the iconic South Aussie brands that we all know and love Australia-wide,” she says. It caps off a huge 3 years in operation for the women who can add the recent wins to their impressive tally of awards including winning the Emerging Business award in 2022 and New Product in 2021 in the South Australian Premiers Food & Beverage Awards, as well as Kristina’s Inspiring Leader award in the InDaily 40 under 40 awards earlier this year. “It’s been a massive few years for us and we are enormously proud of what we have achieved. We have all sacrificed a lot of time with our own families to get the business to where it needs to be, so to see the progress we’ve made is really satisfying - but we also know there is a huge amount of work still to be done,” Kristina says. “It’s a good job we all get on so well and are absolutely in love with what we do!” *Source: breastfeeding.asn.au/resources/breastfeeding-rates-australia

F E AT U R E

I’VE BEEN LEFT OUT OF A WILL, NOW WHAT? ASK AMY… WORDS — Amy Nikolovski, Managing Partner, DBH Lawyer A: So, your loved one has passed away and you have found out that you are not a beneficiary of the Will or adequate provision has not been made for you, what do you do? Under the Inheritance (Family Provision) Act 1972 (SA), you may be entitled to make a claim.

Donor milk for preterm infants SAHMRI's collaborative approach

THORNDON PARK Hamilton Terrace, Paradise

Officially Australia’s BEST playground, the award winning Thorndon Park Playground incorporates elements of creative play, inclusivity, and story-telling. This innovative playspace is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and provides a range of play settings that encourage interaction, self-expression, and a sense of wonder and is tailored for both children and adults.

Did you know that babies born between 32 and 36 weeks gestation make up the largest proportion of early (preterm) births? Did you also know that it is common for mothers who give birth prematurely to have difficulties producing enough breast milk for their baby, especially in the first few weeks after birth? This is why SAHMRI is collaborating with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (Lifeblood) and five hospitals across three states to deliver the GIFT trial. The research team completed an initial study in 2021-2023 involving 200 babies to assess feasibility and has now been awarded funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to make this a large study involving more than 2000 babies. The principal investigator of the study, Professor Alice Rumbold, answered a few questions about the study. What inspired this research? When babies born preterm are in hospital, they are often fed infant formula when milk from their own mother is unavailable or in short supply. However, formula can sometimes be harder for babies born preterm to digest, causing vomiting and bloating and a problem known as feed intolerance. To avoid this, many hospitals in Australia provide what we call ‘donor milk’ to babies born preterm. At present, this is usually only available to babies born very small or very early (before 32 weeks of pregnancy). What is donor milk? Donor milk is human milk, donated from another breastfeeding mum, that has been pasteurised (heat-treated) to kill any bacteria and viruses that could be present in the milk.

GLENELG FORESHORE PLAYGROUND Glenelg Foreshore, Glenelg

The mega slide is super fast (and also super hot in summer so keep that in mind!) and the nature and water play sand pit area keeps big and littles entertained for hours. There are in-ground trampolines, tunnels to crawl through, climbing frames and a rope wall!

What is the GIFT Trial? The GIFT Trial is studying whether access to donor milk should be expanded to include babies born just a few weeks early, between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. We intend to find out whether giving donor milk instead of formula, until their mother’s own milk has fully established, reduces episodes of feed intolerance and helps the babies transition to being fed at the breast. We are also studying whether this reduces the time they need to spend in hospital after birth.

Our research team is based at the SAHMRI Women and Kids offices at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and we have nurses onsite to determine if babies are eligible. Any new mothers who are interested will only be included in the study if the health care team determines that the baby needs more milk than the mother can provide. If you would like more information on the study, you can contact gift@sahmri.com or phone 0459 811 712. / 24

Just being a person entitled to make a claim is not enough to satisfy the two-prong threshold, you must also satisfy the Court that you have been left “without adequate provision for your future maintenance and advancement in life”. This means you must show you have a financial “need” like having dependents or a mortgage. In many cases, even when a child has been estranged from a parent for some time, estrangement alone has not prevented an applicant to be successful in a claim for provision from the Estate.

There are strict time limits that apply, so it is important to obtain legal advice as soon as you become aware that you have been inadequately provided for. In South Australian an application must be made within 6 months of Probate (or Letters of Administration if there was no Will) being granted.

How does it work? We are collaborating with Lifeblood, which supplies donated breast milk to hospitals for vulnerable babies whose mothers are unable to produce enough of their own milk for their baby. Lifeblood donors go through a strict screening process, similar to the screening done for blood donors, that includes testing for infectious diseases and questions about the donor’s health and lifestyle. How do you find participants? We have a very small window of opportunity to enrol participants in the GIFT Trial. Babies must be born at 32-36 weeks gestation, be less than 4 days old and require more milk than the mother is able to produce. So far, we have found that mothers who are given information during preterm labour or prior to delivery have a higher likelihood of enrolling in the study, so we’re trying our best to get the word out there!

Who can make a claim? Only certain people can make a claim for provision under the Act, they are: 1. The spouse of the deceased person; 2. A person who has been divorced from the deceased person; 3. The domestic partner of the deceased person; 4. A child of the deceased person; 5. A child of a spouse or domestic partner of the deceased person being a child who was maintained wholly or partly or who was legally entitled to be maintained wholly or partly by the deceased person immediately before his death; 6. A child of the child of the deceased person (grandchild of the deceased); 7. A parent of the deceased person who satisfies the court that he cared for, or contributed to the maintenance of, the deceased person during his lifetime; 8. A brother or sister of the deceased person who satisfies the court that he cared for, or contributed to the maintenance of, the deceased person during his lifetime. If you do not fall in one of these categories, you cannot make a claim under the Act.

When you have been left inadequate provision or completely left out of a Will it can be a very stressful and upsetting time, that is why it is important to meet with an experienced practitioner who will be with you throughout the process. PRINCESS ELIZABETH PLAYGROUND South Tce, Adelaide

The kids at KIDDO HQ call this playground the “castle playground” because of the giant spiral slide that’s been built into a castle – and boy they’ve spent many hours climbing those stairs and whizzing down. There are also plenty of swings and slides, in ground trampolines, and the biggest most epic climbing frame you ever did see. With ample BBQ space and grassy areas, this is a great playground for a party!

The Inheritance Family Provisions will soon be changed with the incoming Succession Act, as such it is important to seek advice now as some claimants will no longer be eligible under the new legislation (which is awaiting proclamation). MOTHERING ON MY OWN Navigating solo parenting together Interview by: Liv Williams

Rachel and Lennox

Rachel Maksimovic and Jess Dover share not only a special friendship but also a common journey through the challenges and triumphs of solo motherhood. Friends since the age of 14, these two incredible women found themselves navigating the often uncharted waters of single parenting. This shared experience ignited a spark that led them to create the ‘Mothering on My Own’ podcast, a supportive space where single mums come together to share their experiences, offer guidance, and provide insights.

TALK TO US ABOUT THE MOTHERING ON MY OWN PODCAST AND HOW IT TRANSPIRED. RACHEL: I was pregnant when I became a solo mum, because of this I spent a lot of time in isolation and often thought of the many ways in which I needed more support. Most of the time, I felt like no one could understand my struggles and that felt incredibly lonely. Doing life in isolation and feeling like you are carrying the heavy responsibility and emotional toll of two roles on your shoulders often left me feeling helpless. When I began to share and document some of these experiences through social media I realised that many also understood and felt connected to what I was sharing.

Jess and Leo

This podcast was really inspired by the need to provide support, guidance and advice to those who are also navigating the unique challenges of raising children as a single parent. Jess and I have actually known each other since we were 14 and both found ourselves in different (yet similar) situations. We then connected again through one of our mutual friends and we both thought it was a sliding doors moment that we needed to run with. We both felt something special was there and very quickly, Mothering On My Own was born.

/ 26

“We wanted to create a platform where we could discuss the challenges of single and solo parenting by acknowledging the difficulties faced, while also offering new insights and solutions, resources and creating a pathway for hope and inspiration to move through these challenges.”

COULD YOU SHARE SOME OF THE SPECIFIC TOPICS AND ISSUES YOU PLAN TO ADDRESS TO OFFER VALUABLE INSIGHTS AND SUPPORT TO YOUR LISTENERS? JESS: To be honest, the list is endless. Single mums often grapple with various topics and issues unique to their own circumstances. Some of the common challenges they may face include managing finances single-handedly, finding suitable childcare options/getting any time for themselves, balancing work and parenting responsibilities, addressing feelings of sadness and guilt, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, handling emotional stresses, navigating dating and new relationships and fostering a positive relationship with our children. Additionally, navigating co-parenting dynamics, dealing with possible social stigmas and coping with feelings of loneliness and isolation. We plan to address these topics by having others share their own stories so that our audience feel seen and heard in their own experiences and learn from the many different ways women have navigated these times. We also plan to have expert guests that can share real tangible resources, advice and solutions (for example family lawyer, financial advisors, DV support groups) and to use our social channels to establish strong support systems within our community.

With humour, gratitude, honesty and positivity, Rachel and Jess are dedicated to empowering their listeners and fostering a strong sense of community. Join us as we explore their personal experiences, the network of shared learning they bring to their audience, and their vision for creating a safe space for solo parents to connect.

COULD YOU ELABORATE ON HOW 'MOTHERING ON MY OWN' OFFERS A PLATFORM TO DISCUSS THE CHALLENGES OF SOLO PARENTING WHILE CREATING AN EMPOWERING AND SUPPORTIVE SPACE? RACHEL: To be honest, it could be very easy for us to chat about all the challenges of single and solo parenting and leave it at that haha. However, we wanted to create a platform where we could discuss the challenges of single and solo parenting by acknowledging the difficulties faced, while also offering new insights and solutions, resources and creating a pathway for hope and inspiration to move through these challenges. We have seen over the years how much things have shifted in terms of having more conversations, sharing resources and information in the motherhood space and how impactful this has been on women as a whole. Unfortunately we believe that there are many topics and challenges that are unique to single mums that are missed in these conversations so we want to be able to provide that. Like, who on earth is talking about dating as a single mum and the complexities and challenges that come with it in the modern world of dating? So we plan to tackle the big stuff and the real stuff and everything in between!

RACHEL, YOU’VE BEEN SINGLE PARENTING SINCE YOU WERE 20 WEEKS PREGNANT. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED AND HOW YOU’VE WORKED TO OVERCOME THEM? RACHEL: The biggest challenge I have had to navigate (and am still forever working through) is the loneliness and isolation that comes with solo parenting. I am incredibly grateful that I have worked for myself over the last 7 years and it has gifted me the opportunity to be at home with Lenny 24/7, however, it means everything that I do, including my work, is in isolation. Without a partner to share the responsibilities and emotional support, it can feel overwhelming and it also feels like it socially disconnects you from friends and the rest of the world. Oftentimes I could easily go a week without any adult interaction (except for my poor barista who would have copped me lingering around for a chat!) The lack of adult companionship over the years has been a huge strain, and the isolation I have felt has really impacted my mental health over the years. The demands of parenting in isolation has of course limited my ability to engage socially with friends which has again exacerbated the feelings of loneliness. I have had to get to work on building a supportive network around me, seeking out additional community resources where I can but also learning how to ask for help within my network. I think friends and family do want to help but often do not know how, so learning to be specific in what my needs are and asking for it when I need has been huge in shifting my circumstances.

“Given the challenges that come with single parenting it could be very easy to sit in the discomfort of the struggles and stay there.”

HOW HAS ADOPTING A “GLASS HALF FULL” MENTALITY HELPED YOU NAVIGATE THE UPS AND DOWNS OF SINGLE PARENTING? JESS: We both have the same mindset which I believe is the key to how we have both found ourselves to where we are today, given our circumstances. Given the challenges that come with single parenting it could be very easy to sit in the discomfort of the struggles and stay there. Sometimes it can start with something very simple, like feeling grateful for our morning coffee or the sunshine outside. Feeling grateful for a bed to sleep in or a car to drive us to where we need to go. It sounds silly sometimes but when we can start small and find gratitude for the simple moments, we will start to go out in search of the good things in life—rather than staying stuck in all the things we “lack”. We cannot always control what happens to us but we can control how we respond. By practising daily gratitude we are both able to acknowledge tough times but move through them with gratitude and I truly believe this is what has made us the women we are today.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER SINGLE MUMS WHO MAY BE FEELING ISOLATED OR STRUGGLING WITH THEIR ROLES AS SOLO PARENTS? To actively seek out and connect with like-minded mums/ support groups. Whether that be online or in person. Engaging with others who understand your experience can provide a sense of solidarity and connection. For example, many single parents share in the discomfort of weekends (which tend to be “family time”) and this can feel more isolating doing things on your own while looking around at all the happy families. Having another single mum friend to spend time with during these periods has helped ease some feelings of loneliness and sadness. Lastly, just knowing that these times won’t last forever. Be kind to yourself and remember to take one day and one step at a time. LISTEN TO THE MOTHERING ON MY OWN PODCAST ON YOUR PODCAST APP.

How did motherhood for both of you impact your drive to develop this brand and its products? As many of you will know all too well, holding your first born in your arms and soaking in their absolute purity really switches on a deep analysis of all that we consume and are exposed to.

O F

E A R T H The sunscreen revolution

Can you share the inspiration and journey that led to the creation of People of the Earth and its commitment to environmentally and socially responsible products? People of the Earth started with a beach walk and a ‘what if!’ conversation! We were both living in Byron Bay and spending so much time on the beach and in the ocean with the kids. Natural sun creams on the market at the time weren’t very inspiring. Claggy on the skin and full of canola or grapeseed oil. We were in our very-youngchildren era and were so inspired by the ocean at that time. We still are!

T H E

Your journey as friends began during your boarding school days in Adelaide. When reflecting on where you are now, can you trace the path that has led you to this point? Absolutely! Freja and I have had similar life journeys. We magnetised to each other immediately at boarding school. I remember her encouraging me to skip homework time and we were caught playing piano in the music room on one my first nights at school which led to a term long Gating! We both were quietly (and not so quietly) rebellious, resisting the norms and we also shared a love of adventure. We formed a deeper solidarity on recognising each other’s grit and leadership in challenging / 32

We both spent our early twenties travelling and working around the world. This inspired an appreciation for culture and also for diverse natural environments. Seeing first hand the disparity between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ really affected us and made us question how to make a difference. There has always been an attraction for both of us to live the life less well travelled. Our teenage rebellion matured into a continual seeking: ‘how do we live life, if not better, in a more beautiful and meaningful way?’ In our late twenties we entered motherhood. Ah, motherhood! With all of its wonder and challenges! We were both doing it as single mums and the constraints of a 9-5 job really hit us in juggling providing and meaningful time with little ones. Motherhood under financial stress imbued in Freja and I tenacity and drive to make meaningful changes to our lives and others. So People of the Earth was born as a creative expression of our passions, a solution to survival and a way to make a difference.

IF WE HAD ANY IDEA ABOUT THE CHALLENGES WEAVING ALL OF THIS INTO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AND FORMULATING OUR OWN BIOACTIVE SPF WOULD BE, WE WOULD NEVER HAVE STARTED! IGNORANCE WAS DEFINITELY ON OUR SIDE!

How much has your shared love for wild places, the outdoors, and conservation played a role over the years in the business and your friendship? Environmental love is a value platform we both share. Although little kids ensure life takes on a slower, less adventurous (yet busier) form and there are fewer wild adventures, our love for this beautiful earth has always contextualised and inspired our friendship. And in the very same way it does our business. Starting a business together can be a significant challenge for any friendship. Can you tell us how your friendship has evolved through the process of building People of the Earth? It is not for the faint hearted! I am fortunate to have Freja. 27 years of friendship now! We communicate well and listen well. There is a lot of love and respect for each other. I think these are the key ingredients needed to navigate challenges. Our relationship has deepened and matured a lot. I think we have both learned to keep an eye on the ‘big picture’; meaning we never sacrifice our relationship over small decisions. We have the art of give and take perfected. When we see a decision means a lot to one of us there is the kindness to lean into that and go with it. Working together over time we have learnt our strengths and weaknesses and how they compliment each other. Also, empathy is key. Navigating tough and stressful times over the years through motherhood and personal events we have developed an understanding that our capacity to meet workloads ebbs and flows and we support each other in this. A great tag team if you will!

We love your shimmery surf zinc, and our little people also just LOVE this idea! How did you come up with it? It was inspired by the fluoro zincs of the 80’s and cricketers. We thought let’s do this but make it natural! It is a product that appeals to mums as much as kids. Use it as a high SPF bronzer or a highlighter for a glowy beach look. And take the challenge out of slathering your kids with getting them excited with some sparkly fun!

We brainstormed and envisioned on that walk what the ultimate sun cream would be like and also the ultimate business. We wanted to create something we felt amazing about. Environmentally, socially and for our children. If we had any idea about the challenges weaving all of this into successful business and formulating our own Bioactive SPF would be, we would never have started! Ignorance was definitely on our side! Both being single mums at the time and living on a shoe-string budget it was a meagre $150 we pooled together to begin experimentally formulating. We also had the bonus of a friendship with a retired organic skincare chemist with a penchant for champagne lunches in exchange for formulating advice! This teamed with test runs of long surfs produced Sunbiosis (formerly Sun Butter), our first People of the Earth baby.

Founder Jules with sons Arki and Arlo

The duo behind this innovative venture, Freja Dixon and Julia Sare, kick started People of the Earth on a whim and a prayer, sparked by a single ‘what if’ conversation. We chat with Julia about how it all started—in the boarding house at an Adelaide all girls school if you can believe it—and their vision for the future.

conditions whilst trekking across Kangaroo Island with a cohort of Wilderness girls in atrocious weather.

All of this ignited a drive in us to create products that are safe choices for families. And safe choices for our Earth and our Oceans.

We had a vision of being able to immerse ourselves completely in the wildest of places and leave no trace. Of knowing our kids could frolick outdoors without having to make the compromise of slathering them in SPF we didn’t feel great about.

Interview by Liv Williams

Imagine a sunscreen that is good for your skin, good for the planet, and… it sparkles. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, not anymore. People of the Earth is a mum founded business offering a range of sun protection products that seamlessly blend in fair trade, eco-conscious plasticfree packaging, and a commitment to organic ingredients. And look, it doesn’t hurt that their products are shimmery, shiny and metallic, akin to the top-tier highlighters found in the most prestigious cosmetics collections, and glide onto your skin like butter.

It was frightening to read that babies at birth already have measurable toxic sunscreen chemicals in their bloodstream. Not from their Mother’s milk mind you, but from the water their Mother’s drink during pregnancy. Sunscreen chemicals cannot be filtered out of our waters. And these chemicals are hugely hormonally disruptive. For our women, our children and our aquatic life this is very concerning.

ALTHOUGH LITTLE KIDS ENSURE LIFE TAKES ON A SLOWER, LESS ADVENTUROUS (YET BUSIER) FORM WITH FEWER WILD ADVENTURES, OUR LOVE FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL EARTH HAS ALWAYS CONTEXTUALISED AND INSPIRED OUR FRIENDSHIP.

What's on the horizon for People of the Earth, and do you have any exciting developments or products you'd like to share with your customers in the near future? People of the Earth is growing quickly at the moment for which we are so grateful. Motherhood has been all consuming for so long and Freja and I are transitioning to a new phase of life. Her youngest is five and my youngest is three. So watch this space! More products for sure. An after sun care range is around the corner. B-Corp certification is on our list. Deepening our relationships with our wonderful growers and harvesters is something we are really excited about. We look forward to being able to support the women who produce our coconut oil, cacao butter, shea butter and sustainable myrrh etc in new and more meaningful ways.

How important is it for you to support other women in your business? Women supporting women is something we are very passionate about. The challenges women face are very real not only in developing countries, but even here in Australia in 2023. Child care shortages are a big issue here on Yaegl country where I live. This is a Women’s issue. It keeps Aussie mums in financial stress. As we expand, flexibility to support single mums in employment will be a priority. Whether it is continuing to seek suppliers that employ single mums or sharing and demystifying with the women around us the path to doing beautiful business and how achievable and empowering that can be, we will always have a hand in supporting women.

We can’t wait to take on a bigger team here on Aussie soils and provide flexible working opportunities for single mums. We want to keep thinking outside the box! Endless are the ways business can be good and do good and for us this is only the beginning.

OPIN ION

With Helen Connolly, Commissioner for Children and Young People “They are too young, they won’t understand, they will be scared.” Is it ever too early to involve children in emergency planning? This summer there will be some SA families who will face a ‘household’ emergency. It might be the result of a ferocious storm or escaping a bushfire that requires a full evacuation of a whole community to a designated safe place. One of us may become ill or have an accident that requires an ambulance. Would our children know what to do? What if there is a car accident up the road and one of our children is first on the scene? Or a huge storm that leads to water pouring into our

Summer self-love

house while we’re not there. Do they know what to do? Do they know the steps to ensure their own safety and best chance for survival? We can’t plan for every possibility, but there are ways to run through scenarios that will help our children feel less afraid and more empowered in an emergency. The act of planning with them will send the strong message that their input is critical and their safety paramount. Planning for an emergency means everyone knowing what to do and what is expected of each of us. Children tell me that they want to be capable and sensibly engaged in an emergency, they want to know what they can do to ensure their own safety and that of others. Part of our responsibility as parents is to involve our children in creating a household emergency plan. Not all emergency situations will involve fire, storms, or floods, but as these are the emergencies likely to cause children the greatest concern, it is important that they know you have a plan and understand what your expectations are of them in the event of an emergency. If we involve our children in household emergency planning, we are much more likely to minimise the negative impact an actual emergency might have on them before, during and throughout the recovery phase. It makes sense to do this during the holiday period when we can devote time and focus on emergency planning as a family. We need to ensure we

ask questions that allow our children to express their points of view, and which give them permission to ask as many questions as they need to.

WE CAN’T PLAN FOR EVERY POSSIBILITY, BUT THERE ARE WAYS TO RUN THROUGH SCENARIOS THAT WILL HELP OUR CHILDREN FEEL LESS AFRAID AND MORE EMPOWERED IN AN EMERGENCY.

WORD ON THE STREET Let’s involve all family members in planning this summer.

Finding time to do a drill or a rehearsal could iron out issues that weren’t considered during the discussions. This might bring practical solutions such as where the spare keys are stored, and where to meet if you get separated. By involving children and considering their interests and ideas, we not only get a better plan but we nurture children’s emerging capacity for participation and community action. A lab Teresa Palmer's touching role in Susie Collins' birthing experience

f lo v e ms Intervi ew by : Liv Willia

Talented Hollywood actress, mumof-five and business woman Teresa Palmer shares a unique bond with her best friend, Susie Collins, extending far beyond the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry. In this exclusive interview, Susie opens up about her personal journey into motherhood and the extraordinary role that Teresa played as her dedicated birth support person. From the very first moments of her daughter Peach's arrival into the world, Teresa's unwavering presence and guidance left a profound impact. Their story is a heartwarming testament to friendship, love, and the incredible strength found in the company of someone you trust completely. Congratulations on the birth of Peach! Can you share with us the moment you first held your baby in your arms? What was that experience like for you? Thank you! The moment I first held Peach in my arms was such a surreal out of body experience. I was so physically exhausted by the time she arrived that it took me a while to even register what was going on. I remember feeling relieved that she was safe and sound, and so proud of what I had just achieved. I also remember just staring into her eyes and studying her little face. I had tried so many times to dream up what she would look like, and it felt so amazing to finally meet this little person that felt so familiar to me.

Everything was such a blur, suddenly there is a tiny little human on your chest, you are breastfeeding for the first time, people are buzzing around you, you and the baby are getting checked, it’s all going on! The actual gravity of the moment didn’t quite hit me until I was back in my hospital room. That’s when I broke down crying and truly began to process the last 24 hours. I don’t think I have ever felt so many emotions swirling around at once. It’s a love I have never felt before, a love that’s so overwhelming it makes your heart ache. It’s the best feeling in the world. You've mentioned that Teresa Palmer, your best friend, acted as your birth support person. Can you tell us what led to the decision to have her by your side during this special moment? I think Teresa being my birth support was always a given! Tez and I have known each other since we were sixteen and have been through so much together. I knew I needed to be surrounded by people who I felt comfortable and safe with in such a vulnerable setting, and I honestly couldn’t have imagined my birth without her. Teresa is so passionate about all things pregnancy and birth related and I knew she would be able to advocate for me and my birth plan when needed. She’s also the most amazing mother whose parenting I have always admired, so I knew I could lean on her for advice.

I REMEMBER COACHING SUSIE THROUGH THE PUSHING STAGE, GUIDING HER BREATHING, SHE WAS SO REMARKABLE. I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO SEE PEACH’S FACE ON THIS PLANET THAT WAS SO INCREDIBLE. - Teresa Palmer / 36 / 36

Tez was so supportive to my partner Nick and I throughout the whole pregnancy journey, answering all of our questions and spending many nights hanging out and walking us through what to expect. She was instrumental in keeping me positive and calm in the lead up to and throughout the birth, and worked hard to keep my spirits high so that I could continue to mentally push through the tougher moments. I’m so grateful she could be by my side! What were some of the most memorable and emotional aspects of your birth experience, and how did Teresa play a role in supporting you through those moments? Some moments I will always hold close to my heart are dancing in between contractions with Tez, reading positive affirmations together and having both my best friend and my partner by my side cheering me on and making me feel invincible. Nick and I were both so appreciative of her support when my birth plan took a turn I wasn’t prepared for. She spoke with the doctor and midwives, and helped us make informed decisions on how to move forward. She kept my spirits high when I needed it the most, despite it being hard on her also. Tez was so amazing at holding my gaze and reminding me to come back to my breath, especially during the final stages of pushing. She is one of the first faces Peach saw when she entered the world and that is so special to me.

As a new mum, what advice or insights would you offer to other women who are about to experience motherhood for the first time? I think everyone’s journey into motherhood is different. I feel it’s important to stay true to yourself and trust your gut on what you feel is right. Lean on your friends and ask advice where needed, but also don’t feel overwhelmed if someone does something differently than you. I think we are all just trying to make our way and do the best that we can for ourselves and our families, so be kind to yourself and one another! As a general tip, I would say - you don’t need to buy all the gadgets and gizmos straight away! I remember my friends telling me, “all your bub needs at first is to be fed and loved” and it’s so true. I would also recommend not going crazy getting lots of clothes in the newborn size, haha, I have so many cute outfits that got about one wear before she grew out of them! Do the best you can at every stage, and enjoy your own unique experience! Looking ahead, what are your hopes and dreams for Peach’s future? My hope for Peaches is that she feels empowered to create a life that is perfect for her, whatever that may look like. I hope she always feels loved, supported and safe. I hope she is brave and dares to ask questions, that she always seeks to know more and learn more. I hope she finds someone that loves her unconditionally and with the same fierceness that I feel. I hope her life is filled with adventure after adventure, and that she is fortunate enough to travel and experience all that the world has to offer. I hope that she always feels seen and always feels heard. I envision my role in Peaches life as being her constant. I will listen with open ears and take her in with open arms whenever she needs me. I will be there to guide her, and cheer her on as she navigates different stages and challenges in life. I will be there for both the wins and the losses, and hope that my learnings and experiences can help her make decisions when she comes to her own forks in the road. I can’t wait to watch her grow and blossom into who she will be. Follow Susie Collins: @its_susie_collins

FROM BEST FRIEND TO BIRTH SUPPORT Teresa, serving as Susie's birth support person during the birth of Peach must have been a deeply personal and meaningful experience. Can you share what led you to take on this role for your best friend? I love everything about the birthing process. I also love everything about Susie! So I knew that this would be a memorable experience for both of us. I’ve been a birth supporter once before at another best friend's birth, Sarah Olsen, who I do The Mother Daze podcast with. It was a deeply impactful experience so I was excited to share this with Suz.

Teresa with Susie at her baby shower

What kind of support and guidance did you offer Susie during the birthing process, and how did you ensure her comfort and well-being throughout this transformative moment? As a fourth time mum, pregnancy feels like my natural state! Suz knew this about me and my passion for childbirth and asked me along to join in on this special day which was such an honour. Luckily Suz had a really uneventful pregnancy and took it all in her stride which made it really easy to introduce her to methods of mother led informed birth. I held a “birth class” at her house with her man Nick and her in the lead up to the birth. We talked about every stage of birth, birth partner support techniques for Nick, different positions, pushing techniques to lessen the risk of tearing and fourth trimester info. Being a birth support person often involves being a pillar of strength and emotional support. Can you tell us about any particular moments or challenges during the birth where you felt your presence made a significant impact on Susie's experience? The three of us (Susie, Nick and I) all had a specific intention of how we’d like the birth to unfold, midway through labour it became apparent that we would need to pivot and embrace some changes to our intended birth plan. Guiding Susie and Nick through that and conversing with the doctors and midwives directly about our wants for the birth to make an informed decision was an important part of my role, those hours during the birth were the most emotionally challenging for all of us. I think this part was when I was most moved by Susie’s courage as well as her immense physical and mental strength. We really understood the idea of “surrender”. Could you describe the emotions you felt as you witnessed Susie’s transition into motherhood and the arrival of her daughter? I was on an absolute high, I remember coaching her through the pushing stage, guiding her breathing, she was so remarkable. I was one of the first to see Peach’s face on this planet that was so incredible. There’s this beautiful video of me stroking her head with tears of happiness in my eyes as I was telling her how proud I was as she snuggled her baby girl for the first time. Such a poignant moment in our lives, for both of us. As you continue to balance your career and personal life, how do you see your experience as a birth support shaping your future and your advocacy for maternal health? I will definitely offer my birthing support to friends of mine but have no plans to officially get into doula work outside of that (as much as I love birth). My advocacy for maternal health and informed birth will continue to live on through The Mother Daze podcast that I do with Sarah Wright Olsen where we interview motherhood experts from all over the world, we’ve spoken to so many incredible women in the birth advocacy space including Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein whose incredible documentary “The Business of Being Born” was my very first look in to the birth world and steered me on both my private and professional birth journeys. Can you share any upcoming projects or plans or passion projects you have coming up? I’m about to film in Sydney for 6 months on two very exciting TV shows (which haven’t been announced yet!). In the meantime, still juggling mum of five life, podcast hosting and working on my nutritional supplement company Lovewell! Follow Teresa Palmer: @teresapalmer | @lovewell.earth

Breaking the silence Navigating perinatal anxiety

Gia Hogarth and her fami ly

and depression WORDS: Gia Hogarth, Host of Survive & Thrive podcast

Becoming a parent can be a joyous and magical time, full of love and utter adoration for the new precious life you’ve just created…but it can also be one of the most terrifying. For many new mums and dads, it can be an emotional time full of uncertainty, fear and overwhelm. The perinatal period (pregnancy through to the first year of parenthood) is an adjustment like no other, so it’s probably no surprise that many of us struggle to maintain a balance between our mental wellbeing and the hecticness that comes with a new baby. Perinatal anxiety and/or depression affects 1 in 5 mums in Australia. I’m one of those 1 in 5. My name is Gia and I’m a proud Adelaide mum of three beautiful boys who I adore. I suffered postnatal anxiety after my first son but, like so many new mums and dads, I didn’t seek help when I really needed it. I couldn’t wait for my new ‘mum life’ to start. At the time I fell pregnant I was a television news reporter who thrived under pressure and was used to functioning on little sleep. I’m a little embarrassed to admit, but I honestly thought: “I reckon I’ve got this; I mean how could staying home with a baby possibly be more demanding than the job I already have?” Afterall it was something I’d dreamed of since forever. I was in for a rude shock. When our son finally arrived after a long and exhausting labour, I remember lying in the hospital bed feeling completely shell shocked. I lay waiting for the euphoric endorphins rush I’d read about, but it never came. The ‘newborn love bubble’ friends had so often talked about was also nowhere in sight. I instead found myself trapped in my own bubble of anxiety and panic. I thought there must be something seriously wrong with me: “why was I not feeling like other mums?” I felt like a child myself; vulnerable and scared…for the first time, I didn’t feel in control. Those feelings of hopelessness plagued me for the next few months. I put on a brave face most days, but I was scared to be alone, would cry a lot, was often sick with worry and would catastrophize things in my head. I even had some scary intrusive thoughts. All signs of perinatal anxiety which at the time I didn’t recognise. An irrational fear that my baby could be taken from me stopped me from telling anyone how I was truly feeling, and it wasn’t until my second son came along that I finally got some professional help. I saw a perinatal psychologist which was an absolute gamechanger and something I wish I’d done much sooner. I also wish I had known about PANDA - Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia in my time of need. PANDA operates a free National Helpline that expecting and new parents can call if they are struggling. Anxiety and depression can be mild, moderate, or severe and noone’s experience will be the same. Symptoms can begin suddenly after birth or gradually in the weeks and months after. 1 in 10 dads will also be affected. I lay waiting for the euphoric endorphins rush I’d read about, but it never came. The ‘newborn love bubble’ friends had so often talked about was also nowhere in sight. I instead found myself trapped in my own bubble of anxiety and panic. / 42

Perinatal Anxiety SIGNS: Mood-related:

Excessive fear and worry about birth, parenting, or baby’s health, feeling nervous or angry.

Physical changes:

Panic symptoms like racing heart and breathlessness, easily startled, feeling scared.

Relationships:

Constantly seeking reassurance, avoiding contact with loved ones or healthcare providers.

Perinatal Depression SIGNS: Mood-related

Feeling sad, low, or hopeless, frequent crying, anger, frustration, or resentment.

Physical changes

Low energy, lack of motivation, constant fatigue, disrupted sleep patterns.

Relationships

Withdrawing from loved ones, experiencing relationship conflicts, avoidance or worry about sharing with healthcare providers.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms that are affecting your daily functioning and mental and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy or after birth, it’s time to have a chat with someone.

Hungry for adventure Kid-friendly travel tips for food lovers

Before you head off, do a little google research on the destination’s local food scene. Familiarise yourself with kid-friendly eateries and their menus. There are more and more families travelling that blog about kid friendly foods and destinations, there are apps and online travel guides, it’s a great plan to have a few of these up your sleeve.

WORDS: Larissa Sewell @feastwithlarissa

I also think it’s a great idea to know your risk-points when travelling, is the water ok to drink? Is it safe to have ice in your drink? Can you brush your teeth with tap water? Do you need to peel fruit before eating it? Trust me when I say that a little planning goes a long way for that extra peace of mind *before* you leave.

Before I start, full transparency, this isn't one of those ‘typing away at a desk’ kind of situations. Nope, I'm sitting right by a lagoon pool in Bali, sipping on a piña colada served in a fresh baby coconut, while my twinnies are having a blast in a game of 'pool volleyball'. Admittedly, travelling with kids hasn’t always been this stress-free, it is a lot easier now that my boys are 10, they are definitely more ‘seasoned’ travellers and a whole lot more self sufficient.

FOOD ALLERGIES AND RESTRICTIONS If your child has allergies or dietary restrictions, I highly recommend printing out some allergy cards or a list of restrictions translated into the local language. This is clearly not something to be messed with, and we don’t want to leave anything to be lost in translation. Creating allergy cards in the local language will ensure your child’s specific needs are understood and help create a safe dining experience. Always make sure you’re carrying your allergy plan and any medication that might be needed when overseas.

PLAN AHEAD I know, I know; sometimes you wanna live a little and do things on a whim, but sister… listen up. I tell you from the pits of experience, plan ahead, and know your terrain. / 44

STAY FLEXIBLE Be prepared for food-related surprises. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, kids might just not like the local fare. Have a backup plan or look for restaurants serving more familiar dishes. French fries and burgers are universal, and fed is best! Have a stash of familiar snacks and comfort foods from home, just in case your child gets a bit homesick. These can be a lifesaver during long flights or in case you’re in the unlikely situation where you can’t find suitable options abroad. SWEET SOUVENIRS Cement your experience and bring back food-related souvenirs from your travels. Some things we love to bring home are locally roasted coffee (ok, ok… that’s for me), local spices, fun snacks we’ve found, or a cookbook and recipes (remember to declare everything!). A fun idea might be to create a scrapbook of all the different foods you’ve eaten and places you’ve travelled. It’s such a fun way to relive your food and travel adventures.

tasty salumi that won’t slice your savings

Yes, there’s a little more to consider when travelling with kiddos, but trust me when I say that with a little planning and preparation it can be such an enriching experience for both you and your littles. It’s an opportunity to explore new flavours, cultures, and create lasting memories. My boys now have friends all over the world, and have tried all sorts of wonderful cuisines!

However, back in pre-COVID days, we travelled frequently with our boys. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't all sunshine and smooth sailing; there was a lot of sacrifice and a lot of ‘work hard to play hard’. But we made a conscious choice to whisk our twinnies away on overseas adventures for a couple of months of each year, starting from around the age of two. So with a bit of experience in the realm of kid-friendly travel under my belt and school holiday season just around the corner; I thought I’d share some of my trusty tips and tricks for jet-setting with little ones and exploring foreign cuisines, so you can stress a little less, and (hopefully!) savour a few more piña coladas by the lagoon pool.

FOOD EXPLORATION I am all about encouraging your kidlets to be adventurous eaters, after all, it’s one of the best ways to connect with other cultures and one of the biggest things I look forward to when travelling. A tip here would be to opt for family-style dining or share plates so kids can try small portions of different local dishes. Engaging them in the process of choosing dishes from the menu and trying new things can be such an exciting family activity; use the opportunity to explain the ingredients and flavours, talk about local food customs, how local people eat and what utensils they use.

GET COOKING If you’re staying in an Airbnb, villa or vacation home, you’ll likely have access to a kitchen. I totally understand that the words ‘vacation’ and ‘kitchen’ together in the same sentence isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but hear me out; sometimes the familiarity of home cooked food and a little continuity can be a god send. Preparing breakfast, or cooking something simple (I’m yet to visit a country that doesn’t sell packets of dried pasta) could be just what’s needed to keep your kiddos fed, or to keep your sanity (both, ideally).

Bon voyage and bon appétit!

Recipe by: Larissa Sewell

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup of soft butter • 2.5 cups of plain flour • 1/4 cup of caster sugar • 1.5-2 cups chopped nuts - I personally love using walnuts or pecans because they’re soft and buttery when baked • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract - or 1 generous teaspoon vanilla bean powder/paste • 1 tablespoon baking powder • Tiny pinch of fine salt - I use Himalayan or sea salt • 1-2 cups of icing sugar - this is for rolling! Don’t accidentally mix this one into the cookie dough METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 175° Celsius. 2. Mix together the soft butter, caster sugar and vanilla (I get my hands in and do this - you can use a spoon, or a mixer if you don’t mind all the dishes). 3. Once mixed well, add chopped nuts, punch of salt, flour and baking powder - mix until well combined and no lumps of flour or butter remain. 4. Roll the cookie dough balls. The mixture should be *just* moist - but not wet - you should be able to roll the mix into a ball with your hands without getting dough all over your hands. If it’s too wet, add a little more flour, you’re looking for the mix to be just wet enough to hold together. I use a heaped tablespoon of mix for one cookie. 5. Bake them on a cookie sheet for 10-15 mins. I keep an eye on mine after 10 mins, you don’t want them brown, take them out when they’re just starting to tan. Once they’re out of the oven they’ll be fragile but you’ll need to work with them while they’re hot/very warm. 6. Whilst very warm, GENTLY roll the cookie in your icing sugar bowl. You’ll notice because the cookie is buttery and hot the icing sugar creates its own ‘glaze’ on the cookie. Place on rack to cool. 7. Once cool you can do your second icing sugar roll. This makes them extra white and fluffy (or you can do this just before serving). Yes these cookies are crumbly, and powdery and messy, but oh. my. goodness. They are good!! I hope these bring as much deliciousness and joy to your family and friends as they do mine.

Summer Wonka Workshops • 27 December, 3 January, 17 January • 10:30-11:30am, 1:30-2:30pm Create your own amazing chocolate slab and customise with white chocolate letters and lollies from the toppings buffet!

Easter & April Workshops

These Russian Tea Cookies have been my Christmas baking staple for as long as I can remember. Buttery, crumbly, nutty and not-toooo-sweet, they’re a huge hit with family and friends. I am open about being a baking hater; I hate the technical, precise art that is baking - but these? No weighing, no special equipment, just a set of measuring cups, a bowl and an oven!

PLANT A PIZZA HERB GARDEN

I have just finished reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini, and wow, what a ride! This book is like a mix of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter with some dragons thrown in for good measure. The story starts with a farm boy named Eragon who finds a mysterious dragon egg. The egg hatches, and Eragon becomes a Dragon Rider, which is super cool. Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, form this incredible bond, and they're like a dynamic duo on a quest to defeat the evil King Galbatorix. The world that Paolini creates is so vivid and detailed. I could totally picture the vast landscapes, the cool magic spells, and the battles. The action scenes are like something out of a movie! The characters are pretty awesome too. Eragon goes from a regular farm kid to a hero who's brave and learns magic and sword fighting. There's also an awesome wise old storyteller named Brom who's a great mentor. Okay, now the writing style – it's not for the faint hearted. Paolini does use some big words, but it's actually kind of cool because it helps you to improve your own vocabulary. It's like reading a book for grown ups but with a kid hero. / 48

Hi, I’m Henry. I love reading (I always have a book in my hand, except when I’m eating dinner but that’s only because my mum won’t let me!), playing Minecraft and archery. I have a twin sister and a little sister who drive me kinda crazy but I love them anyway (shhh...don’t tell them that).

The best part is easily the dragons! Saphira is smart and funny, and her conversations with Eragon are the best. There's also a lot of cool mythical creatures, ancient languages, and magic. It's like a whole new and exciting world to explore! One thing, though – this book is pretty long, and it's the start of a series, so be ready for a big adventure. But trust me, it's worth it! In a nutshell, Eragon is a thrilling, action-packed, and magical journey that any fantasy-loving kid (or grown-up) will totally enjoy. So grab your dragon saddle and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the land of Alagaësia! Grab the four-book boxed set collection and read the whole Inheritance Cycle series. And there’s a fifth book about to be released!

2. REDUCE ‘TECHNOFERENCE’: FOCUS ON CONNECTION Attention-seeking tends to be framed in a negative light, but the truth is that our children need our attention, and not only do they need our attention, they need our full attention. Let’s face it, as parents we are often pulled in multiple directions at once. The demands of modern living can make it hard for us to give our full attention to any one thing for long.

It’s no wonder that so many of us feel increasing pressure to curate an instagram-worthy summer for our kids, right? Well, I’ve got good news. You don’t need to spend a lot of money or do a whole lot of planning in order for your kids to have a magical summer. Experiencing a memorable summer may be a whole lot simpler than you think. I’m about to walk you through some of my tips for creating memorable summer kids, but first let’s walk down memory 1. LESS-IS-MORE Exercise: close and let your mind back to some of fondest childhood memories of summer. What images come to mind? What were you doing? What do you remember feeling?

Being connected to our smartphones 24/7 means we are more accessible than ever to more people than ever. It has become harder to separate our work from our home life. Research shows that technoference—the interference of parent–child interactions due to parents’ use of technology— can reduce the quality of our interactions with our children. It’s simple: when we are connected to our phones, we become disconnected from our kids. Make an effort to spend quality no-phone-time with your kids each and every day. Even fifteen minutes of quality no-phone-time a day will help you connect—and reconnect— more deeply with your kids in ways that fill their emotional cup. To avoid the temptation to check notifications or use your phone to take photos, consider putting your phone on silent and out of reach during phone-free time.

PLANNING IN ORDER moments FOR YOUR KIDS TO your eyes us HAVE A MAGICAL wander SUMMER. your

When I think back to some of my happiest childhood memories of summer, I remember the simple things: going to the beach after dinner, staying in the warm water until the sun set, and getting ice cream on the way home; hot summer nights outside at my grandparents, the family all together listening to music, and playing barefoot outside until it got dark; running under the sprinklers on the front lawn and then coming inside to cool down in front of the fan with the cricket on TV. It turns out that I’m not the only one whose best summer memories centre around the simple things. I recently asked my Instagram community what their fondest memories of summer were, and the same few themes came up over and over and over again: being with family, being in water— beach trips, running under the sprinkler, using the slip and slide, and water fights—and being outside in nature. When you think ahead to summer this year, hold this in mind: less-is-more. Avoid overscheduling your calendar and remember that our kids don’t need extraordinary; kids find joy in the simple and ordinary moments of life.

3: BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CHILD’S TEMPERAMENT AND SENSORY NEEDS The busyness and change in routine that happens in the lead up to Christmas can contribute to our kids becoming dysregulated and having those extracharged holiday-level meltdowns. We can’t our little people from having tantrums and meltdowns—these actually provide with important opportunities to support the development of our kids’ emotion regulation, but we can be mindful of what situations push our kids’ outside their window-oftolerance and try to keep their stress within manageable limits.

Many traditional summer events and Christmas activities are highly stimulating—think Christmas pageants, end-of-year parties, even a trip to the shopping mall or supermarket in the lead up to Christmas. While some kids are sensation-seeking, drawn to colour, noise, and chaos, others, especially our more sensitive kids, have a much lower threshold for registering sensory information from the environment, and need quieter and slower environments to avoid overstimulation. Factor in your kids’ (and your own) sensory needs when structuring your holidays. It’s okay to say ‘no’ to activities and events that don’t suit the needs and preferences of your family. 4. JUST ADD WATER Finally, if you do get stuck for ideas this summer, remember these three words: ‘just add water’. Research supports what we know intuitively: playing outdoors and being in nature makes our kids happier. You don’t need to venture far from home or spend money to enjoy the great outdoors.

Top 5 tips for maximising nutrition for children with ADHD As parents, getting our children to eat nutritious foods can be challenging at the best of times. If you have a child on medication for symptoms associated with ADHD this can make mealtimes even harder, as medication associated with the condition has been shown to suppress a child’s appetite.

WORDS: Carly Leaker, Clinical Nutritionist, BHSc Clinical Nutrition

Snack boxes are a great idea for visually showing off the colourful variety. It is common for many parents to think this is a ‘younger child’s’ lunch box, but these snack boxes are a great way to offer your child a variety and surprise in one. It also helps to get them included in packing their snack box as most kids tend to be drawn to the preference to snack. For the child, this reduces the pressure of ‘needing to eat’ and disappointing parents and themselves.

Dinner time veggie boosters • Spaghetti bolognaise - make the base of your sauce with blitzed carrots, zucchini, and celery or kale (I will often hide mushrooms in mine). I use the same principle with lasagne. • Chicken meatballs - add veggies to your mixture (zucchini, spinach, carrot). Shepherd’s pie - blitz veggies and hide them in the base with meat, include beans or make it vegetarian with mashed potato on top. • Deconstructed burgers - make your own chicken or mince patties and blitz vegetables into the mixture. Cut up a variety of salad toppings and allow your child to build their own burger using what is in front of them.

Braille Bricks by LEGO

A L L I N C LU SI V E

“Play has the power to change lives; when children play, they learn vital life-long skills, so we were thrilled by the reception that LEGO Braille Bricks received in educational settings. We’ve been inundated with thousands of requests to make them more widely available, so we just knew we had to make it happen!”

A new avenue of inclusivity for children with low vision Specifically designed to help children with vision impairment learn critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration through play will shortly be made available in Australia thanks to support from The LEGO Foundation and the LEGO Group. The new product – LEGO® Braille Bricks – Play with Braille – is aimed at kids aged 6+ and has been designed so that anyone who is curious about braille, be they blind, partially-sighted or sighted, can have fun getting to know the braille system at home with their family members in a playful, inclusive way.

- LEGO Group Lead Designer on LEGO Braille Bricks, Rasmus Løgstrup

Until now, LEGO Braille Bricks have only been distributed free of charge by the LEGO Foundation to organisations specialising in the education of children with vision impairment including Vision Australia locally. Since the launch of these educational kits in 2020, feedback from parents, carers, grandparents, children, and educators has continually highlighted the positive impact the bricks have and how they transform the way children with vision impairment can learn braille. This overwhelming response has led to the creation of LEGO Braille Bricks – Play with Braille to give families the opportunity to enjoy the benefits and practise their tactile skills at home. LEGO Braille Bricks – Play with Braille includes 287 bricks in five colours: white, yellow, green, red and blue. All bricks are fully compatible with other LEGO products and the studs on each brick are arranged to correspond to the numbers and letters in the braille system, with the printed version of the symbol or letter situated below the studs. The set also includes two baseplates to build on and comes in packaging with braille embossing. To enhance the play experience and support pre-braille skill development, a series of supporting play starters are available on LEGO.com and will teach players how to orient, attach and stack the bricks through well loved games such as Rock, Paper, Scissors, which all members of the family can take part in. The LEGO Group is also pleased to announce that LEGO® Audio & Braille Building Instructions will now become a permanent offering. Inspired and co-developed by entrepreneur Matthew Shifrin who is blind, this experience gives builders the option of having select LEGO building instructions available as audio or text for braille readers. lego.com | @lego
