65 YE AR S OF DOING BE AUTIFUL THINGS

This is our home. Help me keep it beautiful.

LET’S TALK ABOUT AMERICA In celebration of our 65th anniversary, Keep America Beautiful® reintroduced ourselves to America with a new public service advertisement (PSA)— “Let’s Talk About America”—which made its national launch in 2018. With this PSA, Keep America Beautiful is demonstrating to a new generation of community stewards—those who were not alive when the historic “People Start Pollution. People Can Stop It.” campaign was released in the 1970s—that it continues to make a substantial economic, environmental and social impact.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow America’s Leading Community Improvement Organization ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I

n 1953, America was in a post-war economic boom. With more packaged goods came a new problem— litter—and in 1953, national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful® was formed to address the issue of an increasingly littered landscape.

Keep America Beautiful launched what became a 20-year public service advertising (PSA) campaign reaching tens of millions of Americans.

In 1960, we began collaborating with the Ad Council, initially using the character Susie Spotless to promote anti-littering efforts with taglines like “Every litter bit hurts” and “Don’t be a litterbug.”

And the future? We indeed live in a challenging time. We face environmental tests that are altering life on earth as we know it. As a nation, we’re more divided than ever before. Yet, Keep America Beautiful retains its neutral, nonpartisan approach to improving the communities we live in and love. We focus on individual responsibility and tri-sector partnerships, believing that this sense of shared, universal responsibility easily encourages alignment among corporations, government, community leaders, and individuals for the benefit of entire communities. During the past 65 years, Keep America Beautiful has grown from a public awareness slogan to the nation’s largest community improvement organization. We have expanded our footprint into more than 600 communities—large and small, urban and rural.

Through the 1960s, the Keep America Beautiful message of beautification and cleanliness reached across America and, on Earth Day in 1971, Keep America Beautiful unveiled the “People Start Pollution, People Can Stop It” PSA. The award-winning “Crying Indian” PSA, featuring the actor Iron Eyes Cody paddling through polluted waters and shedding his iconic tear, is often credited for the awakening of our nation’s environmental consciousness.

Keep America Beautiful brings people together to transform public spaces into beautiful places—as it has done yesterday and today and will continue to do so for future generations.

The history of Keep America Beautiful and the legacy of our PSA campaigns are intertwined. That was yesterday— the foundational years of Keep America Beautiful.

Sincerely,

Today, it is truly an honor to be at the helm of Keep America Beautiful as we celebrate 65th anniversary of this iconic organization’s inception. The reach and scale of the PSA model still allows us to influence millions of Americans. “Let’s Talk About America,” the name of our 65th anniversary PSA, conveys the present—and our future—while paying tribute to our past. As the leading national nonprofit focused on keeping communities clean, green, and beautiful, we’re proud to see communities thrive as the result of our work. In 2018, the Keep America Beautiful affiliate network, comprised of more than 600 community-based organizations, delivered $386 million in direct economic benefits to the communities we serve through our rigorous programming efforts.

Great American Cleanup The 2018 Great American Cleanup®(GAC), the nation’s largest community improvement program, celebrated its 20th year with more than 26,000 events in communities across the country. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The theme—#cleanYOURblock—was a call to action to engage more volunteers and participants in events nationwide. Once an individual joined a local event, they would be inspired to organize similar events “on their own block” with neighbors, family and friends. Keep America Beautiful®, along with national sponsors and partner organizations, engaged volunteers across the country who logged 9.4 million volunteer hours in helping to clean public spaces; improving and beautifying roads, shorelines and waterways; and planting trees, flowers, and gardens. In total, 24.7 million pounds of litter and 68 million pounds of recyclables were collected. National sponsors of the 2018 Great American Cleanup included Altria, Dow, The Glad Products Company, Lowe’s, McDonald’s, and Niagara Bottling. To celebrate Earth Day with the GAC in mind, Keep American Beautiful partnered with EarthX, the world’s largest environmental expo, conference and film festival, for EarthXRecycling in Dallas, Texas. Here are some examples of the breadth of activity that takes place every year during the GAC: • More than 4,000 volunteers alone participated in Keep Austin Beautiful Day, a county-wide service day in Austin, Texas. The event spanned 125 sites, including trails, greenspaces, waterways and community gathering spaces. • On Earth Day, I Love A Clean San Diego activated over 6,000 volunteers who improved and beautified 113 parks, beaches and community spaces during the 16th annual Creek to Bay cleanup. Overall, volunteers removed more than 175,000 pounds of trash and debris from San Diego County. • Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful hosted its 12th annual Great Community Cleanup. More than 850 volunteers removed 97,000 pounds of trash and pulled 31,000 pounds of invasive weeds. This event focuses on the cleanup of illegal dumpsites and removal of invasive weeds in the open spaces surrounding Nevada’s Truckee Meadows.

America Recycles Day America Recycles Day® (ARD) is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting, encouraging and celebrating recycling. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

More than a day, Keep America Beautiful® is proud to have ARD—Nov. 15 and the weeks surrounding it—as one of our national programs that connect local communities to our national movement. Through ARD, Keep America Beautiful, along with its community-based affiliates, partner organizations and ARD national sponsors, provides an educational platform to raise awareness about the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling, as well as the economic, environmental and social benefits of recycling. Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Helen Lowman was one of 44 U.S. recycling industry stakeholders who signed a pledge on ARD to “work together to build on our existing efforts to address the challenges facing our nation’s recycling system and identify solutions that create a more resilient materials economy and protect the environment.” The commitment was made at the inaugural U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Summit, “Building a More

KEEP AMERIC A BE AUTIFUL 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

Vision for America Award The Keep America Beautiful® 2018 Vision for America Award was presented to Andres Lopez, CEO, Owens-Illinois, in New York City on behalf of O-I and its global workforce. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::

The Award is presented annually to distinguished leaders whose personal and corporate commitments have significantly enhanced civic, environmental, and social stewardship throughout the United States.

Innovation Institute’s certification is based on five categories: material health, material re-utilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. Nearly 90 percent of the company’s glass operations were certified across product categories and for certain container colors in the beer, non-alcoholic beverage, spirit, wine, and food markets.

As the makers of glass containers, the world’s most natural and sustainable package, Owens-Illinois (O-I) has been committed to sustainability throughout its more than 100-year history. Founded by Michael J. Owens, inventor of the automatic bottle-making machine, O-I has a global footprint including 78 manufacturing plants in 23 countries. The company serves some of the world’s most loved food and beverage companies.

Another celebrated move by O-I was its partnership with The Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative to re-introduce the O-I presented “A Love Letter to Glass” in returnable, refillable celebration of the company receiving the Vision for America Award. View O-I’s bottle. The bottle, corporate video here: made mostly from http://bit.ly/LoveLettertoGlass recycled O-I glass, is designed to be separated from the traditional bottle deposit system so that it can be reused. This system will result in significant savings in energy use and water needed to manufacture new bottles.

“I am honored to accept this important award on behalf of our more than 26,000 employees. We are proud to produce natural, sustainable and innovative packaging solutions for the world’s leading food and beverages,” said Andres Lopez, CEO, O-I. “Our future rests in the inherently sustainable attributes of our glass products and our unparalleled ability to respond to the changing needs of the brands we serve. As the world’s biggest purchaser of recycled glass, we strive every day to improve our impact on the planet and its people.” Glass recycling and reuse contribute significantly to reducing glass packaging’s carbon footprint. Across the company, O-I is dedicated to reducing its overall impact on the planet through its products and processes. O-I incorporates recycled glass, referred to as cullet, in making new products. Every 10 percent of cullet used in O-I’s production can cut carbon emissions by 5 percent and reduce energy use by 3 percent. In 2018, O-I was named the first food and beverage packaging company to receive gold-level certification on the Cradle to Cradle Product Scorecard for material health. Cradle to Cradle Products

Keep America Beautiful also recognized O-I’s efforts in the development of the industry’s U.S. trade association, the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) and for serving as a founding member of the Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC). O-I is one of the founders of Keep America Beautiful, partnering with us on litter prevention and recycling initiatives. The company also helps fund local programs that encourage community members to collect glass and return it to glass recovery centers.
