CELEBRATING YEARS

65

of

Keep America Beautiful & Its Partnership with Owens-Illinois

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS, It is truly our privilege to honor Owens-Illinois (O-I) and their CEO Andres Lopez as the recipient of the 2018 Vision for America Award. Since 1986, Keep America Beautiful has presented the Vision for America Award annually to a corporation whose commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability has significantly enhanced civic, environmental and social stewardship. O-I embodies this commitment in a significant and meaningful way. • O-I is the first food and beverage packaging company to achieve a gold rating in material health on the Cradle to Cradle Product Scorecard. • Nearly 90 percent of O-I's glass operations were certified across product categories and for certain container colors in the beer, non-alcoholic beverage (NAB), spirit, wine and food markets. The certification is based on five categories: material health, material reutilization, water stewardship, renewable energy use, and social fairness. • O-I increased the amount of post-consumer recycled glass to as much as 65 percent in some of its manufacturing operations - O-I is the largest buyer of post-consumer recycled glass. • O-I led the development of the industry's U.S. trade association, Glass Packaging Institute (GPI), and is a founding member of the Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC). • O-I is also one of the founding members of Keep America Beautiful, which was established in 1953. We can’t think of a better honoree for our 65th anniversary year. As an example of its stewardship, simply accepting this award wasn’t enough for Andres and O-I. Once we informed the company that they would be honored in this way, O-I wanted to know what more they could do. Keep America Beautiful and O-I set up a “listening tour” in several bases of O-I operations in California, Virginia, Ohio and Texas. We heard from O-I staff and community members to learn how they could continue to lead in sustainability and corporate responsibility. Feedback from the organization was strong, supportive and is leading to even further stewardship innovation. We applaud Andres and the more than 26,500 employees of O-I, your partners and vendors. Thank you for your support and partnership with Keep America Beautiful. We look forward to working with you for another 65 years to #DoBeautifulThings. Sincerely,

Helen Lowman Howard Ungerleider President & CEO Chief Financial Officer Keep America Beautiful DowDuPont Honorary Chair, Vision for America Award Dinner

2018 Vision for America Honors Owens-Illinois As the makers of glass containers, the world’s most natural and sustainable package, Owens-Illinois (O-I) has been committed to sustainability throughout its more than 100-year history. Founded by Michael J. Owens, inventor of the automatic bottle-making machine, O-I has a global footprint including 78 manufacturing plants in 23 countries. The company serves some of the world’s most loved food and beverage companies.

O-I’s passion for glass is shared by customers and consumers alike. Customers rely on glass’ beauty, quality and premium nature to help build and differentiate their brands. And consumers, increasingly focused on health and sustainability, love the pure, healthy attributes of glass packaging. They love that glass is made with three natural ingredients – sand, soda ash and limestone and that it’s reusable as well as endlessly recyclable. In fact, O-I is able to incorporate recycled glass, referred to as cullet, in making new products. Every 10 percent of cullet used in O-I’s production can cut carbon emissions by 5 percent and reduce energy use by 3 percent. Glass recycling and reuse contribute significantly to reducing glass packaging’s carbon footprint. Across the company, O-I is dedicated to reducing its overall impact on the planet through its products and processes. This includes keeping a low carbon footprint through efforts like supplying sand, the most significant raw material in the glass-making process, locally and by being close to customers and suppliers, the majority of which are within 300 miles of O-I’s plants.

“Glass is safe for repeated food contact and endlessly recyclable. It’s virtually impermeable to oxygen so it protects the freshness and taste of consumers’ favorite food and beverage brands.”

- Jim Nordmeyer, O-I Vice President of Global Sustainability

Additionally, O-I is investing in R&D, technology and innovation. O-I’s most recent innovation is the development of its new O-I: EXPRESSIONS line, allowing brands to personalize and customize glass packaging through digital printing using organic inks and less energy than screen printing. This year, O-I was named the first food and beverage packaging company to receive goldlevel certification on the Cradle to Cradle Product Scorecard for material health. Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute’s certification is based on five categories: material health, material re-utilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. Nearly 90 percent of the company’s glass operations were certified across product categories and for certain container colors in the beer, non-alcoholic beverage, spirit, wine, and food markets. Another move worth celebrating, is the partnership between O-I and The Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative to re-introduce the returnable, refillable bottle. The bottle, made mostly from recycled O-I glass, is designed to be separated from the traditional bottle deposit system so that it can be reused. This system will result in significant savings in energy use and water needed to manufacture new bottles. And finally, Keep America Beautiful recognizes O-I’s efforts in the development of the industry's U.S. trade association, the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) and for serving as a founding member of the Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC). And, of course, O-I is one of the founders of Keep America Beautiful, partnering with us on litter prevention and recycling initiatives. O-I also helps fund local programs that encourage community members to collect glass and return it to glass recovery centers. Congratulations O-I! Keep America Beautiful applauds your efforts in sustainability.

ABOUT KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment. Celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2018, Keep America Beautiful strives to end littering, improve recycling and beautify America’s communities. We believe everyone has a right to live in a clean, green and beautiful community, and shares a responsibility to contribute to that vision. Behavior change – steeped in education, research and behavioral science – is the cornerstone of Keep America Beautiful. We empower generations of community stewards with volunteer programs, hands-on experiences, curricula, practical advice and other resources to deliver measurable environmental, economic and social benefits. The organization is driven by more than 600 state and local Affiliates, millions of volunteers, and the support of corporate partners, social and civic service organizations, academia, municipalities and government officials. Our partners contribute more than financial support — they contribute ideas, in-kind support, and the time and power of volunteers — all to help us enable communities to become stronger and more resilient. Keep America Beautiful brings people together to transform public spaces into beautiful places and drive collective action that champions environmentally healthy, socially connected, and economically sound communities. Learn more, donate and take action at kab.org.

SIGNATURE PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES Great American Cleanup Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest community improvement program, engaging more than 3.4 million volunteers and participants every year to create positive change and lasting impact in local communities. America Recycles Day America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative, is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. Each year, on and in the weeks leading into Nov. 15, thousands of communities across the country take action to promote environmental citizenship, waste reduction and recycling. Recycle-Bowl Recycle-Bowl is Keep America Beautiful’s fun and exciting national K-12 recycling competition for students, staff and administration. The competition to see which schools collect the most recyclables runs for four weeks each fall, culminating on America Recycles Day. Public Space Recycling Keep America Beautiful seeks to improve the effectiveness of public space recycling through research we conduct about what motivates recycling behavior as well as by sharing best practices in implementing public space recycling programs. We also work with corporate partners through competitive grant programs to place recycling bins in public spaces in a variety of venues throughout the country. Community Impact Grants With the support of corporate sponsors, Keep America Beautiful distributes a variety of merit-based grants to enable our Affiliates and other partner organizations to launch or enhance beautification, recycling, education and other grassroots community improvement initiatives.

Employee Engagement Keep America Beautiful helps our partners strengthen the connection between their employees and the communities they serve through our corporate employee engagement services, designed to cater to a company’s needs and their employees’ interests. Keep America Beautiful manages all aspects of event planning, logistics and execution to ensure a meaningful and memorable experience for all involved. Cigarette Litter Prevention Program The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program is the nation’s largest program aimed at eliminating cigarette litter. Since its establishment over 16 years ago, the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program has consistently cut cigarette butt litter by an average of approximately 50 percent in targeted areas. Youth Education Keep America Beautiful’s educational resources for youth and educators from pre-kindergarten through college — designed using our field-tested, proven Behavior Change System — provide activities and tools to teach the fundamentals of litter prevention; preserving our resources; responsible solid waste management; and how to reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle. Community Restoration and Resiliency Fund Motivated by the need caused by the devastation from the 2017 hurricane season, Keep America Beautiful launched the Community Restoration and Resiliency Fund. The fund helps communities restore and enhance their vital public spaces, returning them to the cherished community resource that connect people, strengthen communities, and prepare them for a more resilient future. Individuals and businesses can donate at act.kab.org/KABfund. National Planting Day National Planting Day, a fall initiative of the Great American Cleanup, mobilizes citizens and organizations across the country to implement native species planting projects in public spaces.

M A K I N G W H AT M AT T E R S : There is nothing quite like glass packaging. It’s made of natural, readily available raw materials. It’s infinitely recyclable. It has endured the test of time for millennia. Glass is a trusted and proven packaging for health, taste and the environment. O-I and glass go hand-in-hand.

H E A LT H

Glass is pure and inert. It’s virtually impermeable, so it helps keep foods and beverages fresh. It is easy to clean, sterilize and re-use—all increasingly important to a health-conscious world.

ENVIRONMENT

Glass is made from three natural ingredients: sand, limestone and soda ash – and from recycled glass. It is 100% recyclable, endlessly. In fact, a glass bottle can go from the recycling bin back to the store shelf in as little as 30 days.

EXPERIENCE

Glass creates emotional connections with the consumers through a multi-sensory experience. It is the only packaging material that people are inspired to save, reuse, repurpose, collect and display.

TA S T E

Glass is all about the taste buds. Because it is odorless and flavorless, it preserves and presents the flavor of a product exactly as intended. When taste counts, glass wins.

OUR PEOPLE. OUR COMMUNITIES. With more than 26,000 employees in 23 countries, O-I is deeply engaged in the communities where we work and live. O-I employees are leaders in their communities; volunteering their time to community service and giving generously to community not-for-profits. It’s all part of our sustainability story. Sustainability in our product. Sustainability for our communities.
