KNOW BEFORE YOU GO RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL GUIDE

Play Safe – When going into the backcountry, tell someone where you are going, when you will return, and always bring safety gear.

Mindful Travel. Activities. Guides. Backcountry Safety.

know before you go

IN THIS NEW LANDSCAPE OF LIFE...

Embracing the mindset of a responsible traveler is more important than ever. For detailed information about travel and activities in North Lake Tahoe, please check out our Know Before Your Go Informational Guides on GoTahoeNorth.com/knowbeforeyougo. They provide the necessary tools to fully prepare for your time in North Lake Tahoe. From tips on how to demonstrate mindful travel to helpful hints for planning your trip, the Know Before You Go Guide is the perfect resource for a successful getaway.

BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY

Know Before You Go is also a term used to stress the importance of backcountry safety. Skiing or riding in the backcountry is an amazing way to experience nature however, because terrain access is beyond the boundaries of a ski resort, there is no avalanche control work or ski patrol. Before heading out into the backcountry, make sure to take an avalanche safety course, check weather conditions and fully assess the risk. There is specific gear you will need to stay safe (a beacon, probe and shovel to name a few), along with knowledge of reading snowpack and identifying safe routes to hike and lines to ride. Luckily, North Lake Tahoe is full of local experts with intimate knowledge of the area who can guide you through the backcountry for a safe, fun, and challenging adventure.

Vacation with a purpose and help protect North Lake Tahoe.

From mountaintop trails to crystal blue waters, respecting the environment and the people around you can make a huge impact on North Lake Tahoe. Visitors can take the Traveler Responsibility Pledge as a commitment to preserving the natural wonders of the Sierra. Here are a few examples of how you can implement North Lake Tahoe’s Traveler Responsibility Pledge:

Take the pledge at: GoTahoeNorth.com/sustainable-travel-pledge.

Become A Steward of Lake Tahoe

As we all traverse the terrain and enjoy all our area has to offer, our primary focus is to leave those spaces better than we found them. Region-wide efforts and initiatives like taking public transportation not only helps lower emissions to keep our air clean, but it’s also a free and convenient way to get to your favorite spots.

Respect The Environment

Help preserve North Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty by avoiding plastic bottles and utensils as well as disposing of trash in designated receptacles to reduce your ecological footprint. If you forgot your reusable water bottle, consider supporting the Tahoe Fund by purchasing a “Drink Tahoe Tap” water bottle at any of the region’s Raley’s Grocery stores.

Stay Educated

Prepare in advance for your visit to the area by consulting one of our many guides like Know Before You Go. This will help keep you updated with the current weather conditions and stay safe during your visit. When you arrive, the Visitor Information Centers located in Tahoe City and Incline Village are a great way to get expert advice about what to expect when in the area.

Keep Wildlife Wild

Wildlife are an essential component of North Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem and culture. Watching them from a distance and refraining from feeding them will ensure their safety and yours. And make sure you’re “bear aware,” especially before and after hibernation, by putting trash in locking bear boxes and not leaving food in your vehicle.

Be Fire Safe

When planning to grill, start a campfire, or burning anything outdoors, consult fire restrictions and know the permitting rules ahead of time. Know what to do in the event of any emergency – wildfires can break out quickly and be unpredictable. Make sure you’re aware of Red Flag Warnings too as fires are not permitted during this time.

Demonstrate Mindful Travel

Keeping visitors and locals happy and healthy lays the foundation for a positive experience for all. Observe safety protocols in each establishment and if an area looks too crowded, think about exploring an alternate location. Overcrowding can produce safety and environmental hazards–with hundreds of acres of land to explore, you’re sure to find a location you’ll love, and maybe it will become your new favorite.

Marion Steinbach Native American Basket Museum

The North Lake Tahoe Historical Society houses one of the largest Native American basket collections in California. The exhibit includes over 250 Native American artifacts (mainly baskets) from over 30 West coast Native American tribes. The Washoe portion of the exhibit is extensive and contains a number of baskets made by important female Washoe basket makers including Dat so La Lee, Maggie Mayo James, Tootsie Sam Dick, and many others. The Washoe exhibit not only represents the Washoe community with their wonderful and specialized basketry art, but also recognizes the Washoe as the original inhabitants of Lake Tahoe. Our display showcases the history of the Washoe in Lake Tahoe and their unique and artistically superb art of basket making.

PRESERVING WASHOE CULTURE

The Washoe people (Wašiw) were the first inhabitants of Lake Tahoe, coming to the Lake during spring and summer to hunt, fish, and gather. The center of the Wašiw world is Da.aw (Lake Tahoe) both geographically and spiritually. Like most native people, lifestyles revolved around the environment; the people were part of the environment, and everything was provided by the environment. The Washoe people collected roots, seeds, and berries for food and medicine, and willow for baskets – methods they still use today.

The Washoe people are deeply knowledgeable about the land and where resources are plentiful. This includes an understanding of the seasonal cycles of both plants and animals. Washoe culture is based mostly on legends that carried the explanation of different areas of life. The legends are handed over from one generation to the next by storytelling and are told to the younger generations to teach about the Washoe’s way of life. Children learn about hunting and gathering techniques, medicine preparation, and the legends which are meant to teach appreciation of the land. The Washoe way of life concentrates on family, cooperation, and unity. Older tribe members convey their knowledge to the younger so the tribe culture will thrive and survive.

Today, the Washoe Tribe works closely with several area organizations to conserve the natural habitat of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding region.

discover fall

secret season [see-krit see-zuhn]

There’s a sense of ease and relaxation that happens naturally during this time of year. The leaves start to change and warm days give way to crisp nights, signaling that winter is soon to return. Hiking, biking and days spent on the water are still options, popular trailheads and beaches are less trafficked, and the stillness of Lake Tahoe can be mesmerizing. Don’t miss the region’s fun fall festivals, leaf peeping, and the slower pace that arrives with autumn.

Stewardship Tip

Tahoe is bear country. Be Bear Aware by stashing your trash. Don’t leave food in your car or garage, lock bear bins, and only put food-related trash out on the morning of collection.

ways to experience fall in the sierra

IN THE MOUNTAINS

Find miles of hiking trails for all skill levels. Remember to stay on designated trail systems and follow signage. Leave no trace and pack out what you brought in. Stop by the North Lake Tahoe Visitor Center to get a full list of regional hikes from one of our experts.

ON THE WATER

Don’t miss an incredible sunset or full moon paddle tour with Tahoe Adventure Company. Rent equipment from one of the North Shore’s many gear outfitters. For cruises and chartered experiences, check out Stellar Tahoe, Sierra Cloud Catamaran, Tahoe Gal, and Tahoe Sailing Charters.

EXPERIENCE THE LAKE TAHOE ALE TRAIL

Whether you pedal, paddle or hike, the watering hole at the end of a long day exploring North Tahoe is the incentive that pushes many through that last mile. For adventure-seekers in search of the perfect pairing of singletrack and suds or paddling and pints, look no further. This award-winning, interactive map and video series is the ultimate resource for finding a frosty brew and outdoor adventure.

EXPLORE OUR TOWNS

North Lake Tahoe offers an enticing mix of attractions and activities to keep you exploring through the fall season. Shop across five districts to meet the makers, shop owners and chefs that make North Tahoe’s community culture so vibrant.

GO LEAF PEEPING AND BIRD WATCHING

Bold fall colors are nothing short of spectacular. Drive through Blackwood Canyon on the West Shore to find granite peaks and aspen groves. Walk or bike along the paved Truckee River Trail beginning in Tahoe City. Hike around Spooner Lake– a beautiful two-mile loop on the East Shore.

YOUR LEGACY STARTS NOW

One of the most iconic trails in Tahoe needs your support. Help us build the next phase of the Tahoe East Shore Trail from Sand Harbor to Spooner Summit by purchasing an engraved bear paver or trout plaque, or by adding your name to our donor wall. Scenic vista points will also be available. Secure your spot today by emailing info@tahoefund.org.
