OPERATIO N S A VE TH E B A S I N Chase International and EKN Development, who is revitalizing the Tahoe Biltmore, raised $100K in 20 minutes to help fund the first Fire Rescue Helicopter to serve the Tahoe Basin. With the devastating fires in the past and a dry summer to come, this is an important initiative. There is no aerial support in the entire Basin for fires or rescue operations. Through the new Operation Save the Tahoe Basin effort, you can also donate to this important initiative.

know

before you go LOCAL TIPS When playing in the backcountry, tell someone where you are going, when you will return, and bring appropriate safety gear.

IN THIS NEW LANDSCAPE OF LIFE... Embracing the mindset of a responsible traveler is more important than ever. For detailed information about travel and activities in North Lake Tahoe, please check out our Know Before Your Go Informational Guides on GoTahoeNorth.com/knowbeforeyougo. They provide the necessary tools to fully prepare for your time in North Lake Tahoe. From tips on how to demonstrate mindful travel to helpful hints for planning your trip, the Know Before You Go Guide is the perfect resource for a successful getaway.

BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY Know Before You Go is also a term used to stress the importance of backcountry safety. Skiing or riding in the backcountry is an amazing way to experience nature however, because terrain access is beyond the boundaries of a ski resort, there is no avalanche control work or ski patrol. Before heading out into the backcountry, make sure to take an avalanche safety course, check weather conditions and fully assess the risk. There is specific gear you will need to stay safe (a beacon, probe and shovel to name a few), along with knowledge of reading snowpack and identifying safe routes to hike and lines to ride. Luckily, North Lake Tahoe is full of local experts with intimate knowledge of the area who can guide you through the backcountry for a safe, fun, and challenging adventure.

From mountaintop trails to crystal blue waters, respecting the environment and the people around you can make a huge impact on North Lake Tahoe. Visitors can take the Traveler Responsibility Pledge as a commitment to preserving the natural wonders of the Sierra. Here are a few examples of how you can implement North Lake Tahoe’s Traveler Responsibility Pledge:

Take the pledge at: GoTahoeNorth.com/sustainable-travel-pledge.

Become A Steward of Lake Tahoe

Keep Wildlife Wild

As we all traverse the terrain and enjoy all our area has to offer, our primary focus is to leave those spaces better than we found them. Citywide efforts and initiatives like taking public transportation not only helps lower emissions to keep our air clean, but it’s also a free and convenient way to get to your favorite spots.

Wildlife are an essential component of North Lake Tahoe’s ecosystem and culture. Watching them from a distance and refraining from feeding them will ensure their safety and yours. And make sure you’re “bear aware”, especially before and after hibernation, by doing your part to store uneaten food in specific bear boxes and removing all trash from your vehicle.

Respect The Environment Help preserve North Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty by avoiding plastic bottles and utensils as well as disposing of trash in designated receptacles to reduce your ecological footprint. If you forgot your reusable water bottle, consider supporting Tahoe Fund by purchasing a “Drink Tahoe Tap” water bottle at any of the region’s Raley’s Grocery stores.

Be Fire Safe When planning to grill, start a campfire, or burning anything outdoors, consult fire restrictions and know the permitting rules ahead of time. Know what to do in the event of any emergency – wildfires can break out quickly and they’re unpredictable. Make sure you’re aware of Red Flag Warnings too as fires are not permitted during this time.

Stay Educated

Demonstrate Mindful Travel

Prepare in advance for your visit to the area by consulting one of our many guides like Know Before You Go. This will help keep you updated with the current weather conditions and stay safe during your visit. When you arrive, the Visitor Information Centers located in Tahoe City and Incline Village are a great way to get expert advice about what to expect when in the area.

Keeping visitors and locals happy and healthy lays the foundation for a positive experience for all. Observe safety protocols in each establishment and if an area looks too crowded, think about exploring an alternate location as well. Overcrowding can produce safety and environmental hazards– with hundreds of acres of land to explore, you’re sure to find a location you’ll love, and maybe it will become your new favorite.

PALISADES TAHOE Palisades Tahoe is the largest ski resort in Lake Tahoe and third-largest in North America, and offers a variety of year-round activities for guests to enjoy. In the winter, skiers and riders can explore the resort that hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, with eight peaks worth of terrain and two base areas, connected for the first time this winter via a new gondola. After the snow has melted, summer visitors can ride the Aerial Tram up the mountain to take in breathtaking views, or explore hiking trails that lead to waterfalls, lakes and lookouts. In 2021, the resort officially changed its name, to remove a term that is a slur against Indigenous women. The new name, which refers to an iconic band of cliffs on the mountain called the Palisades, honors the resort’s rich history of more than 70 years as a progressive force in the ski industry, and looks to a future of continuing to push boundaries. As part of its partnership with the local Washoe Tribe–the original inhabitants of North Lake Tahoe– the resort offers summertime educational Washoe Cultural Tours, and hosts a Washoe exhibit at the High Camp mid-mountain lodge. When it comes to ski season, Palisades Tahoe is Dat So La with her baskets—Nevada Historical Society known forLeehuge snow storms in the winter, and bright sunshine in the spring–there’s a reason it’s called the Spring Skiing Capital! Experts can get the inside scoop and find the most coveted terrain with North Face Mountain Guides, while beginners can take a lesson at the mountaintop beginner area, with stunning views of Lake Tahoe. The whole family will enjoy Disco Snowtubing, surrounded by vibrant laser lights and a live DJ. In the Village at Palisades Tahoe, you’ll find signature events, fun happy hours, live music and a variety of dining options to round out your après ski experience.

Washeshu Itdeh [The People From Here] Dat So La Lee with her baskets—Nevada Historical Society

THE WASHOE PEOPLE The Washoe people (Wašiw) were the first inhabitants of Lake Tahoe, coming to the Lake during spring and summer to hunt, fish, and gather. The center of the Wašiw world is Da.aw (Lake Tahoe) both geographically and spiritually. Like most native people, lifestyles revolved around the environment; the people were part of the environment, and everything was provided by the environment. The Washoe people collected roots, seeds, and berries for food and medicine, and willow for baskets – methods they still use today. The Washoe people are deeply knowledgeable about the land and where resources are plentiful. This includes an understanding of the seasonal cycles of both plants and animals. Washoe culture is based mostly on legends that carried the explanation of different areas of life. The legends are handed over from one generation to the next by storytelling and are told to the younger generations to teach about the Washoe’s way of life. Children learn about hunting and gathering techniques, medicine preparation, and the legends which are meant to teach appreciation of the land. The Washoe way of life concentrates on family, cooperation, and unity. Older tribe members convey their knowledge to the younger so the tribe culture will thrive and survive. Today, the Washoe Tribe works closely with several area organizations in efforts to conserve the natural habitat of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding region.

EXPLORE Photo: View of Sand Harbor—Mariusz Blach/iStock

OUR NORTH LAKE TAHOE CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA STATE PARKS D.L. Bliss State Park, California Along the west shore of Lake Tahoe, just north of Emerald Bay is D.L. Bliss State Park. The 744 acres, donated by the Bliss family and named after a pioneering lumberman, railroad owner and banker from the region, the park offers a wide variety of recreation options including relaxing on the warm sand of Lester Beach, hiking the Rubicon Trail or checking out Balancing Rock, a 130 ton rock balancing on the rock below. The park offers camping in the summer and day use parking areas which tend to fill up by mid-morning, so arrive early or visit later in the afternoon after crowds have dissipated.

Emerald Bay State Park, California Emerald Bay, a designated National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior, is a stunning site to see. Lake Tahoe’s only inlet is home to Fannette Island, a small island in the middle where you can see remnants of a stone tea house used in the 1930’s by the owner of Vikingsholm, Tahoe’s “hidden castle”. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, guests can tour Vikingsholm and feel transported into history at one of the first summer homes at Lake Tahoe.

Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, California With nearly two miles of lake frontage, and towering pine trees (some of the tallest in the world!) this west shore park has been a favorite of locals and visitors for over 200 years. It’s the only Sierra State Park that operates programs in the winter with over 20 km of marked and groomed cross-country ski trails. The park is also home to the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, a summer home built in 1903, which is open for public tours during the summer months. All proceeds from the tours benefit the restoration and interpretation of this incredibly unique piece of California history.

Sand Harbor – Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Along the east shore of Lake Tahoe is Sand Harbor, one of the most popular and stunning parks in the Tahoe basin. Crystal clear waters meet gently sloping beaches to offer one of the most specular swimming spots you’ll find. The water is filled with huge boulder formations unlike anything you’ve seen. Open yearround, summers are busy so arrive early and be prepared for a reservation system coming in 2023. Sand Harbor is also home to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival during July and August which features plays set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Lake Tahoe.

Spooner Lake – Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Encompassing more than 12,000 acres of forested open space, Spooner Lake and Backcountry offer a wide variety of year-round recreation. With 50 miles of hiking, equestrian and mountain biking trails to choose from, your adventures are endless. In the winter, groomed trails on the south side of Spooner Lake are free to the public for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Sledding is also an option for some family fun but remember, no sled left behind!
