INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2023 CAMPAIGN THEME:

#EMBRACEEQUITY

Approaching its 50th year and inspired by universal female suffrage which was of course instigated in New Zealand in the late 19th century, International Women’s Day (IWD) is once again celebrated on March 8th.

This year’s theme is #EmbraceEquity. Equity can be defined as giving everyone what they need to be successful. In other words, it’s not giving everyone the exact same thing. If we give everyone the exact same thing, expecting that will make people equal, it assumes that everyone started out in the same place - and this can be vastly inaccurate because everyone isn’t the same.

IWD 2023’s campaign theme aims to get the world talking about why “equal opportunities are no longer enough.“ Read more about this here.

STAYING SUN SMART ON SITE THIS SUMMER

Summer is well and truly underway in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and many of us will welcome the warmer weather with open arms.

But the seasonal change also brings some added health and safety risks for those working onsite during the summer months.

These risks can be easy to overlook, but those who don’t take them seriously can pay the ultimate price.

Skin cancer, mainly caused by overexposure to ultraviolet rays (UV), is the most common cancer in New Zealand, with more than 80,000 Kiwis getting it each year, according to the Cancer Society.

Melanoma NZ says that about 80 per cent of all skin cancer deaths can be attributed to Melanoma, which, unfortunately, New Zealand holds the highest incidence rate in the world.

Each year, about 6000 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with the deadly cancer, and more than 350 of them will die, which is higher than those killed annually on New Zealand roads.

The need to be mindful of the risks associated with summer has never been more present, with weather experts predicting this summer to come with scorching temperatures and dry spells.

According to Niwa’s latest seasonal climate outlook, temperatures are predicted to sit above average across much of the country over the summer, and there were chances of dry spells for parts.

With this in mind, Site Safe has a long list of practical safety advice available on the website to help with following the best workplace health and safety measures in a multitude of situations.

Our guides to working in summer and how to be sun safe offer some top tips on how to best manage Sun (UV) exposure, dehydration, fatigue and helps with noticing the warning signs you’re succumbing to heat stress or exhaustion.

You’ll also find our summer safety poster, which your workplace can download for free.

Site Safe members also have exclusive access to our Working in Summer toolbox talk, which identifies hazards, symptoms and signs, and specific controls to best manage these risks. You can access them here: https://www.sitesafe.org.nz/member/member-features/toolbox-talks/

The Cancer Society and WorkSafe NZ also have some valuable resources and safety tips on being sun smart and working safely in extreme temperatures. They can be found at: https://www.sunsmart.org.nz/be-sunsmart/ and https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/topic-and-industry/temperature-at-work/working-safely-in-extreme-temperatures-gpg

A3 REFRIGERANT AWARENESS

RLNZ is releasing an A3 Refrigerant Awareness theory course in March 2023. Our previous Flammables course has been redeveloped and made fit for purpose and is now being released back to the industry as “A3 Refrigerant Awareness”.

This new course is designed to give you the understanding of how to deal with highly flammable A3 refrigerants. Unlike the move from R410A to R32, the installation of A3 refrigerant based systems brings a complex set of new challenges.

WHAT IF I HAVE AN EXISTING LICENSE?

It is estimated that there are approx. 7,000 registered as having an Approved Fillers License which considers you to have basic entry-level skills. The RLNZ A1 and A2L Approved Filler courses provide a practical assessment of your skills, just like a drivers license.

If you have an existing Fillers license, RLNZ strongly recommends you complete and pass the A1 and A2L Approved Filler Courses with a practical assessment, prior to A3 Refrigerant Awareness.

HOW DO I RENEW MY LICENSE?

If you have an existing Fillers license and need to renew, RLNZ strongly recommends you complete and pass the A1 and A2L Approved Filler Courses with a practical assessment, prior to A3 Refrigerant Awareness.

WILL THERE BE A PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT FOR A3 REFRIGERANTS?

There will be a practical assessment for A3 once equipment is readily available in New Zealand.

MESSAGE FROM RLNZ

RLNZ Chair, Matt Birch says “RLNZ strongly recommend that you complete and pass both the A1 and A2L Approved Filler Courses, whether you have a current license or need a renewal, prior to starting A3 Refrigerant Awareness.

The theory fundamentals contained in the A1 and A2L support and grow on your knowledge in preparation for learning in the A3 course”.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) make up around 97% of all kiwi businesses and contribute around 35% of the country’s GDP. Together, they can have a huge positive impact on climate action.

The free, easy-to-use toolbox provides a climate action journey with tailored advice and support, based on self-assessment. It connects to the best information, tools and resources, including carbon footprint calculators.

How the Climate Action Toolbox works

The tool provides tailored advice and support in five major impact areas:

ü Moving people

ü Moving goods

ü Office operations

ü Site operations and equipment

ü Designing products

Businesses first go through a 60-second assessment to identify impact areas relevant to them. Under each impact area, businesses are presented with specific actions they can take along with a step-by-step implementation guide.

There are over 40 actions, including switching to electric vehicles and shared transport, limiting non-essential travel, installing LED lighting, being energy efficient, and converting to clean energy equipment.

Businesses will also be provided with case studies of other businesses in their community undertaking actions under relevant impact areas.

Celebrating 90 PROJECT

An extract from articles in Thermonews magazine, Vol 1 no 2, September 1971

One of the primary aims of the New Zealand Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers is to promote the science and practice of refrigeration and air conditioning, and increase the usefulness and well-being of persons engaged in this important industry.

No doubt these aims were present in the minds of those foundation members who assembled in Wellington on April 13, 1933, and took the initial steps which led to the formation of the New Zealand Society of Refrigeration on June 29 that year.

Our first affiliations with overseas organisations were made in these formative months – with the British Association of Refrigeration, the French Institute of Refrigeration, and the New South Wales and Victorian Institutes of Refrigeration Engineers, both in Australia.

Until the outbreak of war meetings had been held frequently – usually each month – but the pressures of wartime had their effect and meetings were less frequent over that period. It was at the annual meeting on May 2, 1944, that a motion was tabled that the Society change its name to the New Zealand Institute of Refrigeration Inc. The name change became effective on July 16, 1945.

A most respected name in the history of our Institute is that of Mr Joseph Louis Gichard. Mr Gichard became president in June 1945. Mr Gischard worked tirelessly for the betterment of the welfare of refrigeration engineers in New Zealand.

In the 1971 issue an article “Clip-on units protect ship’s Refrigerated produce” shows the first container ship into New Zealand the “Columbus New Zealand”. At Wellington’s new container terminal the revolutionary new cargo liner loaded 100 refrigerated containers each carrying about 18 tons of meat for the North American market.

What has aptly been termed the Containersation Era had arrived.

Primary produce destined for North American ports will be handled by the container ships at the ports of Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin and protection will be afforded by portable refrigeration units of the clip-on type of construction.

Thermonews was the first magazine produced by IRHACE and it was distributed quarterly .
