Apprentices and Worldskills survey

It is great to see the Wallie Askew Regional Challenges being supported by industry and spectators.

I was in attendance at the first Wallie Askew regional challenge in Auckland on 1st July and was pleased to see such wonderful support from both spectators and industry. Industry competitions and events like these are essential for promoting skill development and fostering a sense of community and support within the industry.

Taking the time to answer the WorldSkills survey on industry competitions is crucial in providing valuable feedback that can help improve future events and initiatives. Constructive feedback can assist organisers in understanding what worked well and what could be improved upon for upcoming challenges.

Being in this industry is great and the Competenz 2-year certificate is available for those in allied trades, providing an opportunity for retraining and enhancing skills within the industry.

I understand the frustration of waiting for updates on licensing from MBIE and WDC. Regulatory updates can often take time, but once they are received it will undoubtably be a significant milestone for the industry. Distributing the information to IRHACE and CCCANZ members for feedback is essential in ensuring that the needs and concerns of industry professionals are considered.

We have a new member joining the team at the HVAC&R Centre. Welcome to Cassie Birrer who joins us as editor of the Journal. A writer and editor she specialises in features about people, lifestyle, design, architecture and now HVAC&R.

For those who haven’t yet joined the industry community, becoming an Affiliate member can be a valuable step towards networking, accessing resources, and staying informed about the latest developments.

SURVEY ON INDUSTRY SKILL COMPETITIONS

A-GAS RAPID RECOVERY

Survey on industry skill competitions

WorldSkills New Zealand, in conjunction with IRHACE, are undertaking research into the value of participation in practical skill competitions.

It is easy to see how practical skill competitions can benefit the competitor and their employer should a competitor do well at a national or international competition. However, we consider there are many benefits to be gained from competitions at a preliminary or regional level.

Our goal with this research is to answer the following research question:

“Can participation in industry skill competitions result in increased productivity and pursuit of excellence in the workplace?”

We really appreciate if you can take a few minutes to complete this survey. The responses you provide will be invaluable in helping us to better understand the value that skill competitions provide.

Similar surveys will also be carried out across multiple trade industries where skill competitions are run. Once collated, all responses will form part of a report which will be made available.

7 Changes to requirements for Independent Qualified Persons (IQPs)

Following the recent guidance by MBIE for managing missed inspection and maintenance procedures, Auckland Council has made the decision to adopt this process and the associated documents.

This will mean the previous process of a Report in Lieu (RIL) being issued for missed inspection and maintenance procedures will no longer be accepted if issued after 1 October 2023.

It is expected an IQP will issue a Specified System Report and Declaration (S-RaD) where there are missed inspection and maintenance procedures, or where a specified system is not performing. This will enable the building owner (or authorised agent) to issue an accurate BWoF Report and Declaration (B-RaD).

Completing a S-RaD accurately will enable council to determine what course of action Council requires from the building owner. The following advice should be provided when completing a S-RaD form:

• Ensure each specified system requiring a S-RaD is completed under an individual document.

• Be specific on what procedures were missed during the 12-month period by including the exact procedures missed and dates.

• Ensure the document clearly confirms the current performance of the specified system.

• Ensure it includes statements about each missed procedure and if this has materially affected the ability of the system to perform i.e., if a statement is provided that most inspections have been missed, commentary will be required on how it was determined the system was performing for the previous 12 months.

Please take the time to read the guidance from MBIE for managing missed inspection and maintenance procedures and download the Specified System Report and Declaration (S-RaD) so you are familiar with these requirements.

Competition success

Fault-finding, theory, practical and emissions control were all put to the test at the 2023 Wallie Askew Memorial WorldSkills Competition in Auckland and Wellington last month.

irhace.org.nz AUGUST 2023

Northern region

Held on Saturday July 1 at ACSL Group in Auckland, six apprentices put their skills to the test with equipment supplied by Refspecs. Judges Garrett Glynn (MIT), David Everett (Everett Consulting) and Regi Singh (Daikin) – with Trent McDonald responsible for moderation and marketing – named Alex Arnold from White Refrigeration as the top finisher, with Daniel Thompson of Shannon Refrigeration coming in second.

Adam Niziol (Shannon Refrigeration), Adam Holroyd (Comfort Air Conditioning), Jesse Quedley (Comfort Air Conditioning) and Mitchell Baucke (Eastside Refrigeration) made up the rest of the competitors.

“We had apprentices this year that were first-year apprentices and they did really well. They also really challenge the other apprentices and probably make them work a little harder to get a spot in the finals,” says Trent.

2023

Wallie Askew Regional Challenges

Central region

Daniel Jordan (Active Refrigeration), Cameron Wilson-Meek (McAlpine Hussmann), and David Everett assessed the four competitors at the Central regional challenge held at BDT (Black Diamond Technologies) in Wellington – equipment for this challenge day was also supplied by Refspecs.

Jack Butler (Active Refrigeration) walked away with first place, and Liam McVicar (McAlpine Hussmann) coming in at second. Fergus Broad (Active Refrigeration) and first-year apprentice Isabella Morris (HotChilly) also gave the challenge a go.

“One thing I’ve been really impressed with is the calibre that we’ve seen this year,” says Trent. “It’s really impressive that younger apprentices that are new to the trade were willing to come to the competition and give it a go. It was impressive and we really want to see that again next year.”

So what about apprentices thinking about applying for the Wallie Askew competition in 2024? Talk with your company, practise your skills, and learn from local suppliers and technicians, says Trent. “Be curious and ask questions; that’s the key thing that most apprentices probably need to take on board.

“It’d be great to have an apprentice represent the country on the world stage.”

Join IRHACE at Steelfort in Palmerston North on October 27-28 for the finals and see who takes home the Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills Cup.

Special thanks to our major sponsor

Realcold, support from CCCANZ, ACSL Group and BDT for hosting the regional challenges and equipment supplied by Refspecs.

Reaching boiling point

A new 5MW Steam Boiler means increased efficiency for an Auckland food manufacturer.

After 23 years, it was time for an Auckland food manufacturer to invest in a new steam boiler. Producing beef products from beef extract and beef bone extract, exporting to Korea, Australia and America, it was important for the new machinery to be reliable, economical, and able to keep up with increasing production demands – responsible for heating a water tank for cleaning chambers and heating the cooker used for boiling.

irhace.org.nz AUGUST 2023

Increased efficiency

Engaging the expertise of Tubman Heating, the 5MW 90% efficient Unical Trypass 12 Steam Boiler, equipped with a gas-fired CIB modulating burner, was installed. It was suggested by the Tubman team that an economiser also be specified to recover the flue gas’ heat and use it to pre-heat the feedwater – further increasing the efficiency to 95%. The plant can also increase its demand in the future as the new boiler can provide up to 1,600kg/hr more than the current steam usage.

“The previous boiler was rated at 4MW,” says David Teesdale, Tubman Heating Sales and Design Engineer. “The new boiler is 5MW and allows for future expansion to the site – the expansion is proposed over the next few years to increase the production.”

The increased efficiency, up 15% from the old boiler’s 80% efficiency, results in reduced gas usage and saves 315,000m3 of CO2 per year – a reduction of 600,000 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of 17,130 cars per year.

Also adding to the efficiency of the boiler system is the CIB R525A fully modulating low NOx burner, which maintains a consistent supply of energy according to the steam demand. An automatic blowdown valve was also installed and integrated to the Prolec control panel to optimise the TDS (total dissolved solids) levels of the boiler and lengthen the lifespan of the boiler.

Installation logistics

A vital component in the manufacturer’s production, this project needed to be completed within one week during the company’s annual shutdown. Together with the assistance of NZ Cranes, Tubman Heating’s Auckland projects and service team worked collaboratively to off-load and install the machinery, weighing in at 21 tonnes – and due to this increased size and weight, additional concrete pads were designed and constructed to bear the new load.

As the existing 4MW boiler was still operational and supplying steam to the factory, the changeover week was planned so that the existing boiler could be decommissioned, and the existing control panel relocated to the new boiler which was installed beside the 4MW.

“When sizing a boiler for a new process or replacement, it is important to accurately calculate the existing steam load of the boiler,” explains David. “Over years, the steam load can vary with production lines no longer in use or new lines added. Any plans for future expansion added to the existing steam load gives a good picture of the existing and future steam load.”
