Carter was able to take photographs of garlands of flowers which as soon as they were touch disintegrated. The tomb took eight years to empty due to the meticulous recording technique of Carter, and the contents were taken to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Kleider machen Leute!

Spaniards learning English spell 'because' in 237 ways, reveals Cambridge University Spain is finally out of recession – even though the financial crisis continues. Spanish students of English have up to 237 ways of spelling 'because', according to research by Cambridge University. Estimated figures from the Bank of Spain say the country's GDP grew by 0.1 per cent over the summer months. Linguists studied a corpus of written text and found variations of the word that included 'becouse', 'becaus', 'beacuse', and 'becuose'. But it remains at 1.2 per cent below figures for the same period in 2012. They also found spelling mistakes were most common in the words 'which', 'comfortable', 'accommodation', 'possible', 'believe', And the growth announced – the first in two years – occurred over 'different', 'bicycle', 'environment', 'beautiful', and any word with the months of July, August and September, when Spain's economy a 'ght' in it – 'right' or 'caught' were frequently spelled as 'rigth' or usually shows a dramatic change from the winter due to the influx 'caugth'. of tourists. Monthly essentials

This month is Movember. So what is it? During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. With their “Mo’s” men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. How it works Movember challenges men to grow a moustache for the 30-days of November, thereby changing their appearance and the face of men’s health. In October Mo Bros sign up at Movember.com, and on the 1st of Movember with a clean-shaven face start their Mo growing journey. Then for the entire month, these selfless and generous men known as Mo Bros, effectively become walking, talking billboards for 30 days. Through their growing efforts they raise awareness for the often ignored issues of men’s health, by prompting conversations wherever they go. Another crucial part of being a Mo Bro is to raise funds for men’s health. Men donate their face, and much like taking part in a run or a walk for charity, ask their family and friends to sponsor their efforts. Movember’s not just for men. The women of Movember are known as Mo Sistas. They play a vital role in the success of Movember by supporting and encouraging the men in their life to get involved. The Movember Effect Movember supports world class men’s health programs that combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. These programs, directed by the Movember Foundation, are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, staying mentally healthy, living with and beyond mental illness and research to achieve our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. A global movement Since its humble beginnings in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 3 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate across 21 countries worldwide. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health causes across the globe, from Moscow to Rio de Janeiro, and everywhere in between.

In 2012, over 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world joined the movement, raising EUR €113.5 million . Check out their website for more information about the event and how you can get involved. FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT. http://es.movember.com/en

Valencia Fashion Week

Tania F.

Spring / Summer 2014

September saw Valencia Fashion Week arriving to the city offering up a glimpse of upcoming fashions for Spring and Summer 2014. inVLC contributors M.C. and Tania went along with notebook and camera in hand to send us this report on what will be hot for 2014. Valencia’s XV edition returned with a new approach for the Spring/ Summer 2014 season. With the hash tag #descaradamentejoven (blatantly young) this season was all about introducing new and young designers and ultimately keeping a younger hipper “fashionista” in mind. This all took place over the course of three days in the Arts and Sciences Agora. While the designers reinforced the dominance of a black and white colour scheme for the coming seasons some did take the risk in presenting bold colour, playing with shapes and patterns. Esther Noriega’s collection titled “Euménides”, meaning “benevolent” was inspired by old Greece. Her designs were a series of party dresses from white to purple, to red, gold and black, all colours associated with Greece. Leather, flower appliques, transparencies all adorned Esther Noriega’s designs.

Esther Noriega

Maria Cozar Couture took us back to the 50’s with her collection aptly titled “Miss Cadillac”. Her designs were marked with very clean and defined silhouettes placing a great emphasis on a woman’s femininity. With the common theme of transparencies in mind Maria Cozar presented a show heavily focused on the colour white with pops of both yellow and blue, both daring against such a timeless colour. Just as in a garden, JavierYJavier’s collection presented us with a little bit of everything of what to expect for Spring/Summer 2014. Roses, daisies and water lilies over silk, lace, colour and prints were what filled JavierYJavier’s show.

Eugenio Loarce’s “Wild Garden” collection with a dominant colour scheme of orange, black and white brought exactly what Spring/ Summer is about to Valencia’s fashion week! There were flowers, bird and fruit motifs, sparkles, sequins and leather details all within a mix of feminine cuts. Siemprevivas presented an ultra-feminine collection. From the billowing and cut out dresses to the smoothness of the silky numbers the name of the collection being "Skin" was every bit appropriate. Their beautiful creations ultimately led to the duo of Siemprevivas taking the prize for best collection at Valencia’s XV Fashion week edition.

It is evident that there was an abundance of talent presented at Valencia’s XV Fashion Week and that with the continuation of such diverse designers Fashion Week in Valencia is an event that cannot be missed!

Tapa Party!

This will be my last contribution to InVLC magazine. So, let's make it a farewell party with lots of nice dishes! To not scare you off, I'll give you a mix of easy tapas, some side dishes you can prepare beforehand and some you can buy readymade. And if you want it even simpler: just give us a ring and Cantina Marina Catering will prepare everything for you (and do the shopping & chopping and cleaning afterwards!!). On the menu we have: fried peppers, a simple green salad, fried shrimp, some fresh bread, a few bowls of olives, aioli, a nice tortilla omelette and - best of all - slices of crispy chorizo with honey, lemon peel, thyme, pine nuts and some big capers.

www.cantinamarinacatering.blogspot.com Fried peppers Buy a big bag of green pointy peppers. You could buy the smallish Pimientos de Padrón (one out of 10 will be hot hot hot), but I prefer the bigger and sweeter ones of about 15-20 cm.

Wash and dry the peppers and find yourself a good, deep pan with a lid. Pour in a little layer of olive oil and once hot, add the peppers and put the lid on. Fry on a medium flame for about 20 minutes, turning the peppers over every now and then. Don´t be intimidated by the sizzling and hissing in the pan… The peppers are done when The first three dishes you can make yourself. It will not cost you more softened. Their skins will have turned a bit brown by then (but than an hour. The bread you can buy at your favorite bakery and the preferably NOT black). Put the peppers on a serving plate and add tortilla, aioli (garlic mayo) and olives in a local supermarket. The coarse sea salt. This will bring out the sweetness of the peppers. chorizo recipe if really mouthwatering… but as a cliffhanger, you'll have to look it up at our blog:

15 Easiest shrimp Shrimp are ridiculously easy to prepare and inexpensive as well. Quality wise (grey) uncooked shrimp are best. But the precooked (that is: pink) shrimp you get in Spanish supermarkets are normally more than good enough and you'll get a kilo of medium-sized ones for something in between five and eight euro. Ingredients - 1 kilo of shrimp (this will be enough for a side dish for 6-10 people) - olive oil - one or two lemons - bunch of fresh parsley - dried garlic - flaked dried chilies (in Spain: 単ora picante) - sea salt and pepper - (optional) some fresh red chilies, deseeded and sliced in little rings - (optional) some chopped fresh garlic Preparation Rinse and drain the shrimp and dry them on some pieces of kitchen towel. Rinse and dry the parsley and chop in not too small bits. Wash/scrub the lemons and chop in wedges. Preferably use wax-free lemons from your own or neighbour's garden. Preheat a generous glug of olive oil in a frying pan. Add the shrimp and stir fry them (first on a high flame and then on a medium one). Add about one tablespoon of dried garlic (unlike fresh garlic, fried garlic will not burn easily and become bitter), the flaked chilies, a little bit of normal pepper and a generous amount of freshly ground sea salt. Now keep frying and stirring. Fresh prawns might be done in about 5-7 minutes. The precooked ones sometimes need more time. So best to taste and try: when the shrimp don't have a juicy but firm texture, fry them a bit longer. Add the fresh garlic and chilies for the last two minutes and the parsley and lemon just before taking the pan from the fire. How to eat Put all dishes on a big table and let your party guests help themselves. Make sure you put a stack of napkins on the table as the shrimps need some handiwork that will and must result in oily fingers! To savor the shrimp, break off their heads just under the neck. Do this by pushing the head upwards (just there where it's actually bending downwards). Don't worry about taking out intestines. That's really, really unnecessary for small to medium-size shrimp. Peel off the shrimp's skin starting from the belly side towards the tail. It's almost as if you take off the shrimp's jacket. At the end you can just pull of the little tail bit. Enjoy your fiesta and food and keep checking my blog for more recipes!

Colourful and productive apartment balconies and terraces

Throughout Valencia there are thousands of balconies and terraces waiting to be used more effectively to provide a delightful outdoor living space, a more colourful block of apartments or neighbourhood or the growing of ecological vegetables and fruits. When we wandered around Valencia taking a few photographs for our book ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style – Terraces, Balconies and Windowsills’ we did discover examples of each but the city could be a much more colourful place.

‘ A mix of cyclamens look colourful and can last for many months’

‘ Poinsettias give weeks of Christmas cheer and can be changed when past their best’. November is also a good time to set up a small terrace with a vegetable garden as small plantlets are still available from markets, garden centres and agricultural cooperatives. The photograph is of ‘Conveniently available from Amazon Books and the Loved Books a three square metre terrace with twenty one vegetables and edible bookshop at Calle Tapineria 18.’ herbs growing on a growing table , in pots , in window boxes and a trough. I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass. David Lee Roth

Prodigious Enzyme

Declan Lehane

By Hiromi Shinya

When I was browsing through this book in my local bookshop "La Traca" C/ Enrique Navarro, Benimaclet I didn't find anything special about it. It did make some spectacular claims but then don't all diet books do that, but then I noticed that it was number 1 in the nonfiction best seller list in Spain. I wondered why so many people would be interested in "enzymes" no matter how marvellous they were. So I read a little more, jumped around a bit in the book, and I got very interested in what it had to say. I bought it there and then though it was a little expensive (17€). Generally speaking I am healthy and I have a healthy diet but then there's always room for improvement. I also thought as Shinya was a doctor that it would give me more scientific information about what is good for me and what's bad for me also make it easier to follow a specific diet.

Now I'm going to give you a summary of his particular diet.

Now that I have read it all I must say that he has a lot of interesting and revolutionary proposals to make based on his medical experience. In many cases these proposals are diametrically opposed to the present health (or should that be ‘sick’) system. Though, whenever I read a book that is proposing incredible things such as

4) The food we eat from animals should come mainly from those with a lower body temperature than the human body such as fish.

"A way of life without illness" "A diet which prevents heart illnesses" "A diet which cures cancer" "Will keep in check type 2 diabetes" "Will fight obesity" "Prevent chronic degenerative diseases"

6) Avoid milk and milk products as much as possible (those with lactose intolerance should eliminate from their diet entirely).

I instinctively want to know about the person who is proposing such things. Is he living the ideas that he is proposing. Well, according to the book (the Spanish edition came out in 2012, while the Japanese edition came out in 2005) the author Hiromi Shinya is now somewhere between 73 and 81 but in the picture he is 73 and he looks very fresh and healthy. He also says that the last time that he was ill was when he was 19 years old!! His mother, who is 96 years old, has also followed his diet most of her life and is both healthy and active. Apart from looking very well Hiromi is still working as a doctor in the USA and Japan. He treats the Japanese royal family and high officials in the Japanese Government. This is obviously very positive because if those with money and power consider him very good then his wisdom and knowledge might be very useful to me and I'm only paying the price of the book.

He takes apart many present day myths such as yogurt is good for your digestive system or to have a high protein diet is good for you........ It really surprised me, though, to hear a reputable doctor say that all medicines, natural or from the chemists, are all basically poisonous for the body and should be taken as little as possible.

1) Maintain a relationship 85 to 90% of your food of vegetable origin and 10 to 15% of animal origin. Looking at our type of teeth and digestive systems we are fundamentally vegetarian. 2) Seeds (rice, cereals, nuts etc…) should constitute 50%, vegetables and fruit 35 to 40% and meat and fish 10 to 15% of the total. He recommends organic food because of its high quality and greater quantity of enzymes. 3) The seed should be unrefined (eg. Brown rice) as they keep the greater amount enzymes.

5) Eat fresh and unrefined foods in their natural state as much as possible.

7) Avoid margarines and fried foods 8) Chew your food well (40 to 70 times every bite)

One of the principle messages of Dr Hiromi Shinya is that our cells are being constantly renewed. The new cells are being produced by the food and drink we take in so the quality of the food and water is determining our very health. Although his principle message is about diet as he is a specialist in stomach problems, he does say at the beginning of the book that being happy, enjoying the simple pleasures of life, having fun is also fundamental in allowing the enzymes to work in your favour. I found the book very interesting and it confirmed many of the things that I already knew and which are already part of my lifestyle. I had heard before about chewing but I had never really put it into practice but now when I've sorted out my present teeth problems I'll make a concerted effort to put it into practice. May the power be with you!!!

New kinds of family by Chris Cavey

Activity 1 Can you explain the differences between these pairs of words? 1 get married / get divorced 2 marriage / re-marriage 3 ‘birth’ parent / step-parent 4 ‘nuclear’ family / ‘blended’ family / extended family 5 brother / half-brother

Activity 2 Complete the sentences with a word from the box. husband

2 Ella is Lily’s ______________________.

Ups and downs It almost sounds too good to be true but Debbie and Martin are quick to admit that blended families have their ups and downs. ‘There are difficulties and challenges,’ says Debbie. ‘Different families have different routines and it can be difficult for children to move between their two families. Birthdays and holidays can be tricky. Where do the children go? Who should they spend their time with? Also, when my children are naughty it can be difficult for Martin to tell them off. Things that might be simple in a ‘traditional’ family can be a bit more complicated.’ And how about the children? Martin’s eldest child, Ella, is twelve. ‘I like my two families,’ she says. ‘I live with my mum but visit my dad quite often and I like going to stay with my half brother and sister. I’m happy that my mum and dad get along OK. They’re not married any more but it’s good that they can still be friends.’ Is her family unusual? ‘I don’t think so. A few of my friends at school have half brothers or sisters. I think it’s normal, really.’ Making family life work Of course divorce and separation are never easy but many people are finding less painful ways to do it and are changing the way that many people think about families.

It all sounds a little confusing but Debbie loves her blended family life. ‘Steve and I had a ‘good divorce’ ’, says Debbie, ‘we tried very hard to make our marriage work but we realised it wasn’t working – and then we did our best to make our separation as easy as possible for us and for our children. Steve lives very close to us and the children see him very often – in fact he sometimes babysits for us and he is looking forward to meeting the new baby’.

3 Martin is Debbie’s _______________.

Activity 3 1 get divorced 2 have children 3 end in divorce 4 expecting a baby 5 get married

In addition, Debbie is pregnant with her third child. She’s expecting a boy who will be a halfbrother to Lily and Alex and also to Martin’s three other children.

Activity 4 1 They have their ups and downs 2 It sounds too good to be true.

Debbie’s story Debbie got married to Steve in 2001 and had two children, Lily and Alex. Unfortunately, Steve and Debbie’s marriage didn’t work out and they got divorced in 2006. The children live with Debbie. In 2008, Debbie remarried. Her new husband, Martin, has three children from his previous marriage. They live with their mother but they visit Debbie, Martin, Lily and Alex at weekends.

Activity 2 1 divorced 2 step-sister 3 husband 4 ex-husband 5 stepfather

So what is a blended family? These days, almost half of all marriages in Britain end in divorce and over 40% of marriages are re-marriages – people getting married for a second time (or third, or fourth!). More than 10% of all children in Britain live with one ‘birth’ parent and a step parent – a parent who isn’t their biological mother or father. The traditional ‘nuclear’ family of two parents and their children is not so traditional any more. A ‘blended’ family can be a combination of parents, step parents, children, stepchildren, half-brothers and half sisters – a rich mixture bringing new possibilities and new challenges to family life.

What is a family? What do you mean when you say ‘my family’? Do you mean your immediate family – you, your husband or wife and your children? Do you mean your extended family – your parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews … Or perhaps you mean something more complicated. Blended families are becoming more and more common.
