OUR PUBLISHER’S NOTE IT’S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WE’RE NEAR THE END OF 2020 AND OUR NOVEMBER / DECEMBER EDITION IS HERE. This year went by quickly for me. Many of my family, friends, and colleagues note the virus, subsequent lockdowns, and an uncertain future all contributing to consuming the direction of our daily lives. I’d humbly like to thank all our readers, advertisers, and supporters for making our success possible. I’m extremely proud of each edition we publish, and I love to hear your feedback when I’m out in our communities. It’s often complimentary, but then our readers are polite people who, when they’ve nothing pleasant to say, usually don’t say anything. I hope you enjoy reading through our November / December edition which celebrates so many influential people doing amazing things and pursuing lives full of happiness and goodwill. Thank you again for all your support over the years. The digital magazine business is a tough business, but I know readers love to read through each edition of InFluential Magazine, Spanish InFluential, and Teen InFluential (and we know firsthand because we hear from so many of our supporters), and as long as that’s the case, we’ll continue forward moving. BELIEVES NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE EVERY BARRIER IS JUST A HURDLE Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the young songwriter Hing Zhe Lee is representing southeast Asia collaborating with big names in the music industry. Hing has been working on his craft from adolescence but his major achievements began when he first captivated the attention of Reshma Martin, a famous Malaysian singer-songwriter. Since then, has worked with her as a guitarist and songwriter.

ing moved to Los Angeles , California to enhance his skillset and connect with industry members through the famous Los Angeles College of Music. At just 19 years old, studying in Los Angeles, Hing made an easy transition to working with some biggest names in the industry. Hing has proven himself as an extraordinary musician and we’re thrilled to hear his upcoming music. This artist is showing promising signs in his career so far and we look forward to his future as a part of the music industry. William Jackson: When did you start singing? Hing Zhe Lee: I started singing at seven years of age, my grandmother used to request songs from me, and I’d sing to her. At the age of ten I joined a school choir. At the age of 14 I picked up the guitar after coming across Metallica while researching bands on Youtube and knew I wanted to be like them. This is when my passion for music developed. William: How did you start singing? Hing: I had an office job but didn’t enjoy it. I thought long and hard about my lack of joy and what to do next and discussed it with my parents. It’s at this point I determined pursuing music is for me. Writing music and playing guitar are a part of me and they’re something I love. Hence, I made the decision to leave everything in Malaysia and travel to the United States to pursue my musical career and education. William: How has your family supported your dream of being a musical artist? Hing: My mom used to play violin. My dad would frequently pull out the harmonica and play it. They’re supportive because their son has something he is passionate about which is music. William: What where their thoughts when you told them you wanted to move to Los Angeles, California? Hing: My father was skeptical of me traveling to the United States to pursue music because of the stigma. The timing of my decision was odd. You see, on the day my parents agreed I should pursue music, my grandmother died; I was devastated. As I was close to my grandmother, I felt the

Teen need to write something. I wanted to write a tribute to my grandmother that expresses how much I love and miss her. Upon hearing the song, my dad is impressed. Though, he doesn’t understand the song he realizes it was an excellent effort. He agreed my decision to move to the United States to pursue music was the right thing to do. William: Who are your music influences? Hing: Two of my biggest influences are Metallica because they’re the reason I picked up the guitar and I’ve always wanted to play in a huge stadium with a rock band. The second is Taiwanese singer Wang Lee Hom.

William: What do you wish to present to the world? Hing: I want to express my creativity through my music. I’m not afraid to incorporate Chinese melodies, Indian rhythms and the sound of Malay Kompang into my music. When I create music, I want to show people a piece of me you can’t see such as the Malay and Indian cultures and how I blend them successfully.

William: What is your focus right now? Hing: I’m focusing on my songwriting. I write music to pitch to movies and series and I write with other local artists. Sometimes a producer needs a session singer or a guitar player and I’m happy to do both.

William: Who are the members of your band? Hing: We’re all based in Los Angeles and bring a diverse cultural experience which comes through to our music. My guitarist, Sebastian Jimenez, is from Mexico. My bassist, Austin Ching, is from Hong Kong. Our drummer, Max Bryman, is American.

William: How has the COVID-10 pandemic affected your career? Hing: I can’t personally go out with my band so I’m doing a little of everything. Song writing, composing, and pitching them to movies and series.

William: What have been the best moments of your career? Hing: I’ve had the pleasure of working with many wellknown names in the music industry such as Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Flo Rida, and Cheryl Cole.

William: What projects do you have in development? Hing: I’m working on four folk indie songs to be pitched for an upcoming comedy movie about two brothers. I’m also working on my personal music with the help of a producer friend, we plan to release a song soon.

William: What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Hing: The advice comes from one of my teachers in the United States, “Nothing is impossible because every barrier is just a hurdle. If you fall, stand up, and come back stronger. There’s a point you can’t give up and you have to keep pushing forward. If you push hard enough, you might find something at the place you want to go”. It really resonates to me. I push my boundaries to make myself relevant in a challenging industry. l

William: What inspires you to write a song? Hing: I’m inspired by anything to be honest. I can play a video game about samurais and get inspired. In fact, I’ve

12

written about five songs after watching a video game. Simply driving down the freeway here in the United States with my girlfriend is another source of inspiration.

KAIKORERO carries the messages so dear to the younger generations, with the desire to always push the boundaries of traditional streetwear further. KAIKORERO’s essence is about combining the use of industrial materials with classic fabrics and all of their traditional and natural aspects. Between anti-conformism and classicism, the label focuses on applying very intricate conception details to essential, everyday-wear pieces, in order to create a look that’s both comfortable and fashionable. KAIKORERO offers a wardrobe of timeless yet versatile pieces, which can be used daily in a casual way or be transformed

KAIKORERO into real fashion moments. The black suit pants with a clean design may seem conventional at first glance, but are surprisingly made of technical material. A jacket to protect oneself against the cold turns into a strong fashion piece with a bag that clips itself onto it, which can be easily adapted to different situations. The brand constantly explores new and exciting ways to twist classic garments with the use of resistant materials such as silicone, plastic or nylon.

Introducing KKRO 1.0. KKRO 1.0. collection is emphasizing on assembling silicone onto the garments. The usage of silicone adds certain qualities to this collection. It is sustainable, synthetic, translucent, and it is flexible. Overall, the silicone provides an unique contrast in texture. Applications such as

sewed on, buttoned up, and buckled on are widely used. KKRO 1.0 is making the collection, as a whole, rather than individual pieces. Each piece of garments is a simple design that can stand alone. Then accessories can be added to the cloth in the way that create something greater than just the sum of pieces. 1+1 can be more than 2. This concept is implied throughout the collection. One of the high light design features for the collection is the detachable system between varies pieces of clothes and accessories. For instance, the main piece bomber jacket is designed to assemble accessories in different positions. One can play with the positioning of the accessories as well as multiply the accessories applied. Therefore, one can create a look that has multiple bags or silicone stripes buttoned on the jacket.

The silicone straps can be assembled on the built-in D rings. Singular application or multiple application are all possible. This is another playful feature for this collection. The straps instantly transform into suspenders, lanyards or jacket carriers. The possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination. Accessories like buttons and buckles are all rubberized coated. This matches with the silicone and create a “toylike” texture. Combining industrial material to garments does not have to be cold and stiff. It can be flexible and playful. The collection is completed with a range of other pieces like: Zippered Back Pocket Nylon Jackets, Matching Nylon Track Pants, Silicone Pocket Crewneck & Tee, Sweaters With Silicone Stripes, HalfSleeve Tee, PVC Brimmed Nylon Bucket Hat, Multipurpose Nylon Crossbody Bag and Silicone Belt etc. l

HAPPINESS, STRESS, AND

THE FESTIVE SEASON The festive season is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year - full of happiness, cheer, and joy. And while this might be the case for many, it can also be accompanied by emotional stress that can take a toll on one’s health and well-being.

R kWRITTEN BY DR. DIVYA KANNAN, LEAD PSYCHOLOGIST, CURE.FIT

48 TEEN

esearch suggests the brain can go into overdrive just before the festive season. Why? Because there are so many decisions to be made and festive season responsibilities can become the topic of conversation in the home long before the festive season arrives. For instance, how will you manage your time, how much vacation will you take, where will your guests stay, will there be conflict in the family, how much money should you spend, and on

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

it goes. It’s not uncommon to feel the stress ramp up prior to the festive season and find you can relax and breathe only after the festive season is over and life returns to its normal pace. Dr. Divya Kannan, lead psychologist at cure.fit, a prominent health and fitness app, offers tips on how to cope with the festive season.

1.

Manage your expectations Most of us having expectations of the festive season having to be perfect, down to every small detail. Easing up a little bit with this expectation can help to take the edge off some of the pre-festive season stress. Acknowledge that it’s okay if everything does not go just the way you planned, and being kind to yourself when that happens, can reduce the self-judgment and help you to focus on what’s important – celebrating with those you love.

Teen 2. Pick your battles

The festive season may not be the best time to pick up that argument you have been meaning to finish with your mother. While there may be unfinished business between family members, which is often a cause for stress and anxiety during the festive season, perhaps another time can be set aside to address conflict and find a resolution. You may find a family member may choose to bring old conflicts to you, and it’s okay to tell them while this is important to address, you would prefer to do so after the festive season so it can be given the appropriate focus it warrants.

3. Mindful eating

Emotional eating and binge eating during the festive season as a way of coping with stress is common and quite easy to sneak up on you because it’s so automatic. Being mindful and paying closer attention to how you eat can help reduce the guilt you might feel post the festive season. Mindful eating as a practice can help you make food choices that allow for indulgence but also helps you associate eating with cues such as being hungry and being relaxed rather than being stressed.

4. Set your boundaries

Whether it be how much shopping you are going to do or how much time you actually want to spend with family, plan for and set your boundaries ahead of time. This can help reduce some of the uncertainty around budget and time. If you need quality time for yourself, make this expectation clear and take that muchneeded walk or workout, despite having a

full house. Research suggests women are more likely to fall prey to festive season stress because they shoulder more of the responsibility around planning. Let others chip in and ask for what you need when you find that you need to take a time out for yourself to recharge.

5. Managing loss

and loneliness

For those who aren’t with their loved ones this year or have lost a partner or family member, the festive season can be an especially painful reminder of this loss. It can be hard to muster up the right amounts of joy and happiness. Reach out to others if you feel sad or lonely and talk about how you feel. Acknowledging how you feel and accepting that it’s normal to have some level of moodiness during the festive season can reduce the self-judgment around this. Seeking professional help prior to the festive season can be a good idea if you feel you’re likely to feel very overwhelmed during this time or might have difficulty coping.

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

6. Pandemic stress

If you’re worried you can’t celebrate with elderly parents or family members this festive season, it might be important to find alternate ways of being together, whether it be a socially distanced outdoor dinner or an online celebration. We’ve all been tested with embracing change this year, and understanding this year the festive season might be different, is okay. The important thing is being able to spend time with those you care about, even if it isn’t the same way as the previous year, there are multiple ways to create togetherness. This year even more than others, the desire to connect with others and take stock of the relationships you do have can feel even more important. It’ll be good to remember there will be many moments to cherish and be grateful for, even if the festive season this year is not exactly how you and your family envisioned it to be. WAYS TO REINVENT YOUR

ScrambledEggs

Easy to make, packed with nutrients and great for the entire family, scrambled eggs are a breakfast staple in households across the country.

W

hile the classic scramble is a great go-to, these days you might be looking to jazz things up a bit. You can excite taste buds with interesting additions, nutritious upgrades, and simple twists on traditional scrambled eggs. Co-host of Food Network’s The Kitchen, and season seven winner of Food Network Star Jeff Mauro reveals five ways to bring your scrambled eggs to the next level.

1

Experiment with Dairy Ingredients Many people add milk to eggs when mixing to create a fluffy, scrumptious scramble. However, you can get creative in the kitchen by changing

up the dairy in your eggs to discover new and tasty results. For example, try half-and-half or cream for a richer scramble. A dollop of plain yogurt, sour cream or mayo adds a touch of zing. Cheese is another awesome addition, and you can go beyond a sprinkle of shredded cheddar to try cream cheese, mascarpone or cottage cheese for a delicious, filling breakfast.

fresh flavor, add chopped herbs such as dill, thyme or rosemary. Want bold flavor? Try adding curry powder or reach for seasoning mixes such as Italian seasoning or Cajun seasoning blends. You might even try a dash of condiments and other extras like mustard, Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce.

Use Superior Eggs for Better Nutrition

Add Veggies, Herbs, and Spices Scrambled eggs are a great base that is completely customizable for what you’re craving that day. Chop up fresh veggies like peppers, onions and tomato. Short on time? Add some salsa. For

4

Leftover Transformation With some simple tweaks, you can transform dinner leftovers into a satisfying scramble. Whether you’ve got leftover meat, greens or even too much pizza, you can serve up a tasty, easy breakfast thanks to last night’s meal. And another added bonus, it’s a great way to clean out the fridge and reduce food waste!

5

Go Beyond the Plate Egg scrambles are great just eating as is, but when you add them into other foods and recipes, you really can shake things up. Sprinkle crumbled queso fresco all over and place bread on rimmed baking sheet, cheese side up. Toast 4-5 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbling. Finish under broiler 30-60 seconds for deeper browning, if desired. Cut bread into individual portions. After about 20 minutes of simmering, ragu should thicken and flavors meld. Teen A COLLEGE STUDENT’S CRASH COURSE IN MANAGING PLAQUE

PSORIASIS

In the spring of 2016, Kate was excitedly preparing for the rites of passage most high school seniors look forward to - prom, graduation, turning 18 and getting ready for college. What she wasn’t preparing for was a chronic illness diagnosis.

I

t started out as a small patch of dry skin on Kate’s neck that began to spread to her scalp in thick, red patches. This must be an allergic reaction, Kate thought, before seeking help at an urgent care center. There, a physician suggested the patches were a fungal rash and recommended special shampoos. But the patches soon covered large areas of her scalp and neck, and were now accompanied by a painful, burning sensation. Kate spent many days trying to hide her patches from other people. Kate visited a dermatologist who prescribed another treatment option, but unfortunately it didn’t relieve her symptoms. As her condition worsened, she saw other specialists, hoping to find some relief. But her symptoms persisted. Now, Kate had to prepare to go off to college while still searching for answers about this unknown condition. “Starting college is hard enough - living in a new place, meeting new people,

starting new classes and activities,” said Kate. “I was focused on trying to hide what was happening to my body. I started wearing a baseball cap and avoided wearing dark clothing.” Kate was determined to get to the bottom of what was going on with her skin. After multiple visits to several different dermatologists, a biopsy finally revealed the truth - Kate had moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease and its exact cause is unknown. Research suggests that an overactive immune system may cause skin cells to pile up on the surface of the skin, which then form psoriasis lesions or plaques and can lead to physical pain, itching, skin tightness and a burning sensation.1 More than 8 million Americans are currently living with psoriasis,2 and plaque psoriasis is the most common form.3

Now that Kate had a proper diagnosis of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, her next step was to find the right treatment. The first two treatments prescribed to her provided some skin clearance. However, finishing her freshman year at college, Kate was still concerned about her skin plaques. Then, that summer, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a medication called TREMFYA® (guselkumab), a biologic treatment that selectively blocks a protein in the body called interleukin-23

(IL-23), one of the key proteins thought to be responsible for plaque psoriasis. TREMFYA® is approved to treat adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who may benefit from taking injections or pills (systemic therapy) or phototherapy (treatment using ultraviolet or UV light). In clinical studies, at least 7 out of 10 patients treated with TREMFYA® saw 90 percent clearer skin and more than 8 out of 10 were rated clear or almost clear after 16 weeks. In clinical studies at Week

16, 4 out of 5 people with scalp psoriasis were also rated clear or almost clear of their scalp psoriasis. Also, more patients had improvement in symptoms such as pain, stinging, and skin tightness. The medicine comes in both a pre-filled syringe and a One-Press Patient Controlled injector. Your first self-injection should be performed at your dermatologist’s office so they can show you the right way to give yourself injections under the skin. eautiful, healthy-looking skin is a reflection of overall good health. But it’s not just a question of how your skin looks - how it feels is just as important. If your skin is sensitive, you may experience symptoms that make you feel uncomfortable.

How do you know if you have sensitive skin?

• Your skin flushes or turns red easily • You have itchiness or dryness • Beauty products or fragrances irritate your skin • You’re sensitive to sun or wind • You have broken capillaries on your face Because your skin is affected by your internal health and your external environment, there are many potential causes for skin sensitivity - and many possible treatments. Sensitive skin is typically caused by a compromised skin moisture barrier, allowing for increased water loss and faster absorption of irritants and allergens that come in contact with your skin. Psychological and emotional factors can also contribute to skin sensitivity, as well as environmental conditions. Whether your sensitive skin is on your face, body or both, it helps to identify common triggers.

Everyday Sensitive Skin Triggers While some people are genetically predisposed to sensitive skin, others can be sensitized by their environment and lifestyle. Some factors that may trigger sensitive skin reactions include

temperature or humidity changes, pollution or smoking, plus use of soaps, household or cosmetic products - especially those containing high concentration of fragrances. Other potential triggers include medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, or factors like emotional stress or lack of sleep. The good news is, there are steps you can take in your everyday life to safeguard your skin against possible triggers.

Create Restorative Spaces We’ve been spending a lot more time at home, so it’s worth evaluating your living space. Making small changes can create a more restorative environment to improve your overall well-being, including the health of your skin. Humans are attracted to nature for a reason. Being in or around nature offers restorative benefits to your physical and emotional well-being. Here are four tips for bringing positive, natural elements into your environment and daily routine.

1. Grow plants. Bring more plants into your home, as they can improve indoor air quality by absorbing toxins and increasing moisture levels - which helps nourish dry, sensitive skin.

2. Stock up on gentle skincare. Use products specially created for sensitive skin. For example, Aveeno offers gentle cleansing and moisturizing products made from naturally derived ingredients - like oat - formulated to nourish, calm and restore skin so it looks and feels healthier. Oats have been used in skincare since ancient times for

their ability to soothe and nourish skin, because they help: Replenish and hydrate the moisture barrier Restore skin’s pH Soothe sensitive, dry skin

Both of the company’s new collections are formulated without fragrance, parabens and phthalates. For the body: The Aveeno Restorative Skin Therapy line is a dermatologisttested body care regimen clinically proven to be well-tolerated and effective on distressed, sensitive skin. Their Restorative Skin Therapy Oat Repairing Cream is formulated with a rich complex of aloe, pro-vitamin B5 and the brand’s highest concentration of prebiotic oat, and is clinically proven to intensely moisturize over time to improve skin’s resilience. For the face: The Aveeno Calm + Restore facial care collection is formulated with soothing oat and calming feverfew to calm irritated, dry skin. The line includes a Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer for daily use. It hydrates to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier over time.

3. Get choosy about fabrics. Select clothing and linens - including face masks - made from gentle, natural materials (like cotton or bamboo).

4. Amp up your lighting. Increase natural lighting to boost vitamin D intake. Visit Aveeno.com to find the right products for the health of your skin. (BPT) l

YourAcne I

t can be especially difficult if you have “severe recalcitrant nodular acne” often referred to as nodular or cystic acne. Cystic acne can be hard to treat and often becomes painful solid bumps that typically erupt on the face, and sometimes also on the upper body. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hillary Baldwin, M.D., warns, “If left untreated or unsuccessfully treated, this type of acne can cause visible and irreversible lifelong scars.”

64 TEEN

Treatment for mild-to-moderate acne can involve using over-the-counter cleansers, topical treatments or even antibiotics. But if you have nodular or cystic acne, certain types of prescription treatments are required to get it under control and prevent scarring. “Each type of acne is different,” says Dr. Baldwin, “So you need to have open dialogue with a dermatologist to assess your particular case and plan the best course of action to take back your face.”

Acne Is Not Your Fault Along with concerns about your appearance, you may worry that others are judging you, or feel like you could have prevented a breakout. The COVID-19 pandemic has also complicated things for you if you’re suffering from nodular or cystic acne. Between the social isolation and the need to shelter in place, everyone’s lives have been disrupted. Interacting with your friends and classmates online may be even harder now, as being on video all the time means your face is front and center. You may feel even more self-conscious as you see yourself on screen for hours every day. that are outside of your control. Know that if you have acne, it’s not your fault but you can take some positive action to do something about it. Seeing a dermatologist is an important first step towards having your acne assessed professionally and determining the right course of treatment. Increased screen time and mask wearing raises new acne issues

Mask wearing is also problematic for some. “Wearing masks may partially cover your face, which can help to hide your acne,” Dr. Baldwin says, “but maskwearing for longer periods of time can also make your acne worse.” If you’ve been avoiding seeing a dermatologist due to any safety concerns, call their office to ask about telehealth visits, which are easy and convenient for consulting with a doctor from your own home.

You Are Not Alone - Take On Acne Stress is another emotional and physical state that can make acne worse, Dr. Baldwin says, and if you’re going back to school in whatever form, this is a really stressful time compared to previous years. It’s important to take care of yourself and find healthy ways to relieve stress that work for you. To get a handle on your acne, make an appointment to talk with a dermatologist. Teen A SKIN CARE EXPERT WEIGHS IN:

TakeCareofYourSc When it comes to your skin and hair care routine, it can be all too easy to forget the scalp. After time though, this neglect can take a toll on the health of your hair, according to experts.

“T

hink of your scalp as an extension of your skin from your face. If you put too much product on your face, your skin cannot breathe. The same is true for the scalp and hair follicles. Taking proper care of your scalp is important in preventing follicles from clogging and also avoids hair getting weighed down from too much product buildup,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, Ph.D.

The Problem Scalp buildup is caused by a number of factors, many of which are unfortunately beyond your control or simply caused by your everyday routine. These include environmental factors, dead skin cells

that don’t shed quickly enough, sweat, sebum and hair care products. Over time, scalp buildup can cause issues like itching, shedding and clogged follicles, ultimately compromising healthy hair growth and your comfort.

The Solution While you’re not about to ditch your sweat session or your favorite hair care products, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to live with scalp buildup. One important thing to consider is the frequency you shampoo your hair. While the right frequency will vary per head of hair, you can experiment until you strike the right balance for you. Be sure to always rinse shampoo out of your hair thoroughly with cool water during each wash. You may also want to incorporate a detox solution into your routine in order to deeply purify and cleanse the scalp of dirt, product buildup and oil, without stripping hair.

FLUENTIAL NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020

To do so, consider new solutions like the EverPure Scalp Care + Detox system from L’Oréal Paris, which is recommended for twice a week use. Containing menthol and neem leaf extract, it leaves the scalp feeling fresh for 24 hours, and leaves hair healthylooking, bouncy and soft. If you have colortreated hair, this can be an especially worthy option to consider, as this sulfate-free, paraben-free solution is color safe. “A sulfate-free shampoo is a great option to prevent scalp discomfort. The new system from L’Oréal Paris is quite effective and affordable. The products cleanse and relieve the scalp of excess dirt, product buildup, flakes and oils without stripping the hair. Plus, it’s been validated by hair colorists, so it is safe on your color-treated hair too,” says Dr. Rivera. Finally, for ultimate scalp and hair health, try adopting a diet that includes nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids and biotin. Don’t let life take its toll on your scalp. By counteracting the effects of buildup, you can help restore the health of your scalp and locks. (StatePoint) l

n fact, BRP – a global leader in the world of powersports and boating, and manufacturer of the Ski-Doo snowmobile – is forecasting a rise in popularity of the pastime among new riders this year. “Snowmobiling can be an exhilarating way to experience and take in the beauty of winter,” said Pascal Vincent, director of global product management, Ski-Doo. “To ensure a smooth and fun experience, it’s important to be prepared before hitting the trails. By following these tips, riders can take advantage of fun on the snow, get in some healthy escape

therapy, recharge their mental batteries and practice social distancing to create memories that will last a lifetime.”

1. Check if you need a license. Licensing requirements vary by individual state, but all necessary information is available through your state snowmobile association, state natural resource office or highway department. For example, many states recommend against drivers under the age of 16 and require passengers to be at least 6 years old. 2. Understand your snowmobile before you hit the snow. Spend some time learning the controls and functions of your snowmobile so you can hit the trail with confidence. The experts at Ski-Doo recommend checking your operator’s guide, knowing your fuel level and understanding best operational practices before heading out. Some areas also require a safety class. Your state snowmobile organizations may offer safety training classes that teach riders about the parts of a snowmobile, riding skills, how to handle emergencies on the trail, laws and regulations, and hazards to avoid, among other topics.

3. Wear the right gear. The right riding gear is as much about comfort as it is about safety. Essentials include high pants or bibs (pants that extend up your chest and back), jackets, gloves, boots, goggles and helmets. Even if not required in all locales, a Department of Transportation-approved helmet can provide warmth and protection as well as fog-free vision. Learning to layer is also essential for maximum comfort. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a mid-layer that provides insulation but

breathes then an outer shell to protect from the elements. Most snowmobile dealers offer a full line of clothing specifically designed and manufactured to keep you warm and help withstand winter weather. For additional safety, always keep the tether cord connected to you.

4. Plan out your route and share the trail with others. Respect everyone on the snow and adopt a fun and safe riding style. Learn traditional hand signals for turning, slowing and stopping, and stay to the right when approaching hills and turns. Be mindful of signs and reminders to slow down. Planning your route in advance can help you stay out of restricted areas. Consider downloading an app like BRP GO!, which uses connected technology to provide navigation for unusual and faraway routes. The app also allows you to safely track fellow riders and download content directly to your phone if service may be limited.

5. Pay attention to the weather and protect the environment. It’s important to check the forecast and trail conditions before heading out. The wind chill or other conditions like snow blindness or whiteouts can make riding less enjoyable. Also avoid riding on rivers or other ice-covered surfaces that may be unstable. Leave your playground and surroundings cleaner than you found them. Don’t throw trash in the snow and respect the animals in the area that call it home. Protecting nature and the outdoors can help keep winter sports and recreational activities viable for decades to come. For more tips and snowmobile safety advice, visit ski-doo.com. EXCLUSIVE You can stay in the loop with Hadar’s upcoming projects by visiting @HadarCats on Instagram and TikTok. William Jackson: Tell me about your earliest childhood memory. Hadar Cats: I don’t know if this is a real memory or just something I’ve imagined from seeing so many pictures but I believe I remember taking a stool and putting it in the middle of my class at preschool circle time and singing my heart out. William: How did living between London and Rome inform your childhood? Did it affect your current outlook on life? Hadar: Yes, for sure. Having such a multicultural upbringing I believe has made me into a more versatile person. I’ve seen and met people from all around the world and going to an international school has really opened my eyes to other cultures, belief systems, and ways of life.

Hader: I always knew I wanted to be an actress, but it was only in the last two years this fantasy of mine became something I could imagine coming together. I’d say it was when I did my GCSE Drama monologue and my mother told me she was impressed with my performance I thought this was something I could take further. William: How do you decide what you’re going to do next? Hadar: The starting point for me is the character: I need to be drawn to my character above all, because if I’m not

drawn to her then who else would be? And once I have an idea of the character, I like roles which demonstrate a character arc and show a person evolving in some way. William: What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Hadar: The best advice is received from my mother. Knowing I’m very self-critical, it’s ‘Leave the past in the past.’ William: How do you create a personal life? Hadar: I believe balance is important. Although I have a manic schedule with

William: When you dream the dream, what did the dream look like? Hadar: The dream for me has always been to be an actress. I’d love to play really iconic roles and create characters on screen that stay with viewers for the rest of their lives. That for me has always been the dream. William: What was your first experience like being in front of the camera? Hadar: I was super nervous. Especially because the first scene I shot, we had about 100 teenage extras who were part of the scene and I really didn’t want to mess up or look unprofessional. William: When did you know you wanted to move into entertainment?

Teen William: Fill in the blank. Ten years from now, the world will be . . . Hadar: Hopefully a more equal and caring place and doing everything it can to protect its resources. William: Twenty years from now, I’ll be . . . Hadar: I hope a successful actress, with a body of work behind me of which I can be proud, and some interesting projects in the pipeline. William: How do you center yourself? Hadar: I believe when it all feels a bit too much – which can happen to anyone – I like to take a bit of time off and go back to some comfort television like Friends to just take me out of a loop for a while. I normally find that helps a lot. William: Are you happy? Hadar: I consider myself a positive person – we all have our ups and downs. But on the whole, yes, I’m happy.

school, riding, acting, the gym, and homework, I believe it’s really important to save some time in the week for down time, to catch up with friends, spend time with my pets, and do things for myself with no goal in mind. William: What’s most appealing about being an equestrian? Hadar: The greatest thing about horse riding is the unique connection you get to experience with the horse. My horses and I have a special relationship and I feel connected to them not only when I’m

riding them but also when I’m spending time with and looking after them. William: People who really know you use what adjectives to describe you? Hadar: I’d say the people who know me best would describe me as outgoing, kind, and thoughtful. I hope. William: Do you have a favorite possession? Hadar: Not a single favorite possession, but I have a little girl’s dress my great grandmother sewed for my aunt which has been handed down to me and I treasure.

William: How do you plan consistently to do better? Hadar: I’m always striving to better myself and see where I can improve. I believe the moment you stop trying to get better you’ve lost the passion for what you do. I’m always watching films, television shows, reading plays, and most importantly, working with my acting coaches. I like to observe what I believe is done well and work on what I can do to make myself a better actress. William: Do you have “it”? Hadar: I think ‘it’ is in the eye of the beholder, but I’m trying to make myself the best I can be. l
