A NOTE FROM OUR PUBLISHER Like so many, I surmise you were eager to turn the page on 2020, a year that’s a clear representation of despair. At this time of the year, it’s appropriate to look back at the past and forward to the future. People have asked me how the InFluential Magazine family is doing. The quick answer is, we’re adjusting much easier than we initially thought possible; however, many things remain uncertain and precarious. The early impact of COVID-19 arrived in March and changed many key aspects of our business model. Our management had to respond expediently to identify changes needed to our finely tuned advertising, sales, editorial, and human resource process foundations. Refinements were mostly seamless to the view outside our organization but impacted the way we conducted business to bring each of our award-winning editions to life and continue to serve our communities. During early 2021, we expect to finalize and, if necessary, implement additional adjustments to further guarantee the future of InFluential Magazine, Spanish InFluential, and Teen InFluential. I hope you’ll continue to support us as we continue our thrilling work to improve our publications and inform our readers. Of course, we’ll strive to keep you updated on our progress. On behalf of everyone at InFluential Magazine, Spanish InFluential, and Teen InFluential, I wish all of you and your loved ones a prosperous and exceptionally large 2021. Please, please, please, continue to be kind to yourself and others. There is so much more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. Happiness,

Cleanse to Eliminate Impurities

Exfoliate Twice a Week

Throughout the day your skin encounters a variety of microscopic dirt, dust and pollution in the air, even if you’re not leaving the house. These particles can sit on skin, dulling the surface and clogging pores, so it’s essential to cleanse regularly to support healthier looking skin. Strive to cleanse skin daily using a product designed to reduce impurities and balance skin throughout the body, such as Artistry Signature Select™ Purifying Body Cleanser that cleanses for a clean feel and youthful appearance. The formula, infused with Nutrilite™sourced Citrus Extract, helps strengthen skin and defend against dryness and other common skincare concerns.

The skin is an amazing organ, naturally growing and renewing. You can encourage cell turnover on your body by adopting exfoliation into your body care routine two times a week. A gentle scrub removes dead skin cells and polishes the skin for increased radiance. Try Artistry Signature Select™ Polishing Body Scrub for a full-sensory experience that smells and feels luxurious as it polishes dull, dry skin for a smoother, energized, healthier look.

Insider tip: Cleanse at least once daily, but more as needed, such as after a workout or because you’re simply feeling the need to refresh.

As being in quarantine and weathering the COVID-19 pandemic continues to put a damper on things, American women are turning to their makeup routines to feel a sense of control and comfort, according to new research.

n September, marketing firm OnePoll asked 2,000 American women about how they’re staying positive and confident as their time in quarantine and social distancing drags on. According to the findings, 51% said wearing makeup and changing up their looks turned out to be a small way to help them escape the stress of current affairs. Going for natural beauty: Since the onset of the pandemic, we’ve seen a palpable shift in mood to a more lowkey, understated aesthetic. After all, when video meetings and intimate (but open-air) gatherings continue to define our interactions, we may be less focused on going for glam and more on dressing for warmth and casual comfort. For that reason, respondents identified a rise in more natural makeup looks as a key trend of 2021.

Leveraging makeup with benefits: A flawless look always starts with healthy-looking radiant skin, no matter how much we’re social distancing. And that’s why for a majority of respondents (60%), products that multi-task get top billing. For example, products that contain vitamin E in the ingredients or improve the skin’s appearance, such as skin smoothing or eliminating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are

Not surprisingly, nearly half of respondents (48%) admit that face masks have transformed their makeup routine. That means the eyes are now pulling focus. (Raise your hand if you’ve attempted smiling with your eyes, or “smizing.”) Sixty percent say they want their eyes to be a standout feature while wearing a face covering. In 2021, watch for the rise of dramatic eye makeup to give the peepers some serious pop.

Getting a mood boost: Being in quarantine and missing out on the things we love doing most can be a downer. While nearly half of respondents (49%) admit to ditching their normal makeup routine, just over a third (36%) say that wearing at least some makeup actually gives their mood a lift. One in four (24%) have gone as far as trying new cosmetics, while just over half (51%) say that using makeup to change up their appearance - perhaps to compensate for the face-covering - lets them feel a sense of control and comfort during a stressful time. During quarantine, making small changes has the power to give you a sense of control and boost your mood. For inspiration, visit www.neutrogena.com. complex with each passing year. He maintains his cheddar is “the sharpest you’ve ever tasted,” adding jokingly, “it’s so sharp it has a British accent, and it was so good that it was worth starting this new company.”

Cheese is the perfect gift. “Cheese is our common denominator,” says Gentine. “There are only two types of people in this world: people who already love cheese and people who need to try The Big Cheese.”

With that in mind, here are three tips for making this year your cheesiest ever.

With The Big Cheese, blocks are sent directly to your doorstep, so you can send

CheesiestYearEver Looking for a stress-free and undeniably delicious snack for your family game night? Want to surprise a special person you haven’t seen in a while with a gift delivery? Or do you simply want to kick grandma’s recipes up a notch this year? The solution is simple: cheese. Not just any cheese; awesome cheese.

a little love without leaving the sofa. A 2.5-pound block to your foodie aunt, a 5-pounder to the family of four. A 40-pound behemoth sent directly to the door of your friend who’s always entertaining (or will be, once that’s safe again). It’s an unexpected gift that you can be confident will be enjoyed and not regifted or left to gather dust in a hallway closet.

Tip 2: Charcuterie Champion Charcuterie boards have become their own popular subgenre . Some would say

a full-fledged movement, with people creating over-the-top, picture-perfect trays packed with premium deli and dairy. The art of the board is all about balance, in color and flavor. Put your folded, reddish cuts of cured meat opposite pale cheeses, next to green olives or grape garnish. Mix and match an assortment of hard and soft cheeses with tapenades and spreads. Temper the salty meats with sweeter fruits like pears or apples. Or keep it simple when you’re looking for something quick and tasty for family movie night. Simply pile up the plate the way they like it, so everyone has options.

Try this recipe for a great new take on a family classic:

Pro Pointer: Serve your extra-sharp, aged cheddar (and other cheeses) at room temperature. When cheese is too cold, its taste is muted. By allowing cheese to come to room temperature, you’re allowing its flavors to come out and join the party.

Directions: 1. Bring large pot of water to a boil. Once water is boiling, add plenty of salt and 1 pound radiatori pasta. Cook until pasta is al dente (5-10 minutes depending on type of pasta). 2. While pasta is boiling, add 1/2 cup half and half to a separate large pot or saucepan and reduce about 15 minutes over low heat. 3. Once cream is reduced, whisk in 16 ounces cream cheese cubes until smooth, then add 2 cups of The Big Cheese. Continue whisking until smooth. 4. When pasta is cooked, strain and transfer to pot containing creamy cheese mixture. Mix until pasta is evenly coated and serve.

Tip 3: Sharpen a Family Favorite Family recipes that stay the same year after year can become tired or stale, so add a little zing with a cheesy kick. The secret is the sharp cheddar. Adding shreds of the zesty treat brings more complexity to dishes. It’s the perfect way to amp up mac and cheese, bring extra creaminess to grits or polenta, elevate a grilled cheese sandwich or breathe second life into leftovers like turkey melts.

The Big Cheese Mac & Cheese From Jessica Slomberg @NYCFoodComa Ingredients: 1 and 1/2 cups half-and-half 16 ounces cream cheese, cubed 2 cups extra-sharp aged cheddar from The Big Cheese, coarsely grated 1 pound radiatori pasta (or any fun pasta shape!)

HOW TO BE AN EFFECTIVE PARTNER IN

YOUR IBD CARE

A lifelong diagnosis like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may feel overwhelming and confusing, but by working closely with your health care providers, you can work toward managing the disease and improving your quality of life.

onsider these recommendations from the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation to partner with your health care team to manage your IBD.

Be Upfront About Your Symptoms Being honest with your doctor about your symptoms is an important first step in your journey with your IBD diagnosis. Oftentimes, this starts by sharing exactly what you are experiencing on a daily or even weekly basis, such as frequency of bathroom visits, pain, blood in your stool or fatigue, so your health care team can gain a better understanding of how you are feeling. One way to help ensure you’re managing your diagnosis properly is to keep a journal, which offers a simple way to track if symptoms have improved or worsened since your last visit and help you remember questions that may arise. If you find it difficult to discuss certain topics, practice talking about these issues with a friend or family member before appointments and consider bringing a loved one to appointments for support.

Work with Your Health Care Team to Set Goals Goals, or targets, will be different for every patient based on the type of disease, severity, progression, and a variety of other factors. Finding the right IBD treatment can take time, so it’s important to balance your present priorities. Start by taking an honest approach to your personal preferences regarding medications. Consider if you have time in your schedule for lengthy infusions. Or perhaps you prefer administering self-injections. You may have short-term goals, such as attending a family wedding in two months, as well

Teen as long-term goals related to the future course of your disease, like reducing IBD inflammation and achieving remission, which is considered mucosal healing. This process is often called “treat-to-target” in the medical community and helps avoid complications and minimizes long-term disease risks as much as possible.

treatments and consider changing your targets if available treatments are not helping you reach your goals. Find more advice for effectively partnering with your physician to manage IBD at crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

Practice Self-Care This goal-oriented approach to managing IBD is much like setting a target and trying to hit the bullseye. It can’t be done by your provider alone; you need to be an active partner in the goal-setting discussion. Providing clarity to your health care professionals regarding personal preferences and your short- and long-term goals like a desire to get pregnant, to travel, to decrease stress and anxiety, gain self-care skills or to return to school can keep the entire team on the same page.

Make Decisions Together by Acting as an Effective Partner Asking questions is the first step toward creating an effective partnership with your health care team. You can start by seeking an understanding of which diagnostic tests are important for you to undergo. Decide together which steps should be taken now and which you should aim for in the future. Be willing to learn each part of the process, including treatment options, potential risks, and benefits. It may take some time before you see any progress made toward achieving your goal. Certain treatments may take some time to work. Review any external factors that may impact the effectiveness of your treatment. Talk to your doctor about adjusting

34 TEEN

In addition to medical treatments and procedures, patients should practice selfcare and seek help from mental health professionals when necessary. IBD patients are at greater risk for anxiety and depression than the public, according to research published in “Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics,” so it’s important to address these issues when they arise. Simple strategies to tackle IBD one day at a time include planning the night before for the day ahead, allowing yourself extra time in the morning and scheduling time in your day for rest. To relieve stress and anxiety, consider low-impact exercises, such as yoga, walking, biking, or swimming, techniques like meditation and mindfulness or diaphragmatic breathing, also known as deep breathing or belly breathing. These complementary therapies can help improve your mental health and emotional well-being. Along with your own self-care, it’s important to be willing to admit when you need help. For some, this may include reaching out to a mental health professional. A therapist, such as a clinical psychologist or licensed social worker can help you work through sadness, uncertainty, and anxiety – emotions common for many patients with IBD. Visits may be short-term or can be longer, if needed. Effective therapy allows

FLUENTIAL JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021

patients to practice the coping strategies learned between visits. Mental health therapists may also provide assignments to reinforce what is discussed during visits. Build your support system and seek guidance from mental health professionals if you ever feel as though the burden of your diagnosis is too heavy to carry alone.

A More Targeted Approach to IBD Care In the past, health care providers managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients focused on how their patients were feeling in the moment. They worked toward fixing active symptoms and tailored treatment plans specifically to address those symptoms. Today, providers are moving toward tailoring treatment to address individual patient needs and helping them achieve remission. This approach, known as “treatto-target,” works to improve IBD care and outcomes by encouraging patients to partner with their health care teams to identify specific treatment goals and monitor progress toward those goals. While clinical remission (absence of symptoms) is one level of success in managing IBD, the treat-totarget approach is geared toward achieving mucosal healing, when no active inflammation is seen during a colonoscopy, and histologic remission, when there is no active inflammation seen at the tissue level. Achieving these levels of mucosal healing or histologic remission generally results in a lower risk of flares, fewer surgeries, lower reliance on steroids and reduced hospitalizations.

influential-magazine.com

FEATURE

Providers adopting the treat-to-target method are likely to work with their patients to consider the risk of developing complications in the future and tailor treatment recommendations based on the disease activity and severity, patient’s genetic makeup and anticipated risk. It’s a more proactive approach than the traditional reactive treatment style as it emphasizes the importance of looking toward the future to avoid complications of the disease and minimize risks.

To achieve a patient’s goals, a provider regularly checks to make sure the patient is responding to the strategy at certain intervals. Both diagnostic and prognostic, or predictive, tests help physicians assess progress against a target. Common tests include endoscopic procedures, radiologic scans, and diagnostic and predictive biomarkers. If tests do not demonstrate sufficient improvement, additional evaluation or treatment adjustments may be advised

to provide the right drug to the right patient at the right time for treatments tailored to the individual. Goals depend on multiple factors and variables, but the anticipated outcome is an improved quality of life for patients managing IBD. Under the treat-to-target method, goals are a mutual decision between the doctor and patient. Goals must be measurable and include a realistic treatment plan. (Family Features) l

Teen HOW TO HELP THE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS

FacingHunger Millions of people nationwide face hunger. And the COVID-19 pandemic has thrust even more Americans into this vulnerable position.

B

efore the COVID-19 crisis began, one in nine people, including 10 million children, already lived in a food insecure household. Communities of color are disproportionately affected by both poverty and hunger. For example, one in four Native American and Alaska Natives experience food insecurity. One in five Blacks and one in six Latinos experience food insecurity. As a result of the pandemic, unemployment has soared and the need for food assistance has increased. More families are accessing food banks than ever before, and many of them for the very first time, which is why it’s really important for everyone to come

food assistance in Mesa, Ariz. “I didn’t have to figure out if I was going to pay for groceries or pay for rent to keep my household afloat.”

Fortunately, efforts are being made to meet the sharp rise in food insecurity. As part of its “Many Hearts, One Community.” campaign, Wells Fargo fulfilled its commitment to help provide 82 million meals to families in need through the Feeding America network of 200 food banks during the holidays. This was a continuation of a decade-long relationship with the Feeding America network which, since the start of the pandemic, has included efforts such as turning Wells Fargo corporate properties and branch locations into mobile food distribution centers. Additionally, the company made grants over the holiday season to food banks operating in Wells Fargo’s global footprint.

So how can you get involved? There are 200 Feeding America member food banks across the country, many of which need volunteers to help pack food boxes, distribute food at drive-through pantries and more. Feeding America food banks have adjusted their practices to ensure social distancing to keep everyone safe. Contact your local food bank to see how you can help families in need. You can also join the fight to end hunger by making a donation. For more information, visit www.feedingamerica.org.

Teen HOW TO CREATE A

Spa-likeExperience atHome During stressful times, there’s nothing better than a little soothing self-care at a spa. If you aren’t able to go out to get pampered the way you used to, you can give yourself some TLC right at home.

T

o help you create your own personalized spa experience, Nikki Miller, global director of KOHLER Waters Spa, offers tips for home self-care based on the relaxing treatments offered in their locations including at The American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin; in Illinois - and even in Scotland. Her primary advice? “First, create a ritual that suits you, and that makes you feel like you’re making time for yourself,” says Miller. “When you’re done, you’ll feel happy and positive, and you’ll feel an improvement in both your mental and physical health.” Here are some ideas to get you started:

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Create a Soothing Space Whatever relaxing rituals you choose, create a comforting, quiet and peaceful space. Choose an area like your bathroom or bedroom where you can have privacy. Make the room special with sensory components like calming colors, ambient lighting, soft textures, soothing music, candles, or essential oils.

Harness the Power of Hydrotherapy “KOHLER Waters Spa is known for its experts in hydro-therapy,” explains Miller. “Certified hydro-therapists at these locations expertly use water to heal the body and to create a healthy experience for guests.” You can harness the healing powers of water by recreating these experiences at home.

Cool rinse: Heat penetrates and forces blood flow and circulation, so switching to a cool rinse after a hot bath or shower brings your body to a more balanced state, helping support your immune system, increasing your heart rate, stimulating blood flow, and increasing thyroid production. Cool compresses: Especially if you suffer from migraines, a cool compress is great way to constrict blood away from the pain area, forcing blood to contract and circulate better.

• Foot baths: Fill a vessel big enough for your feet to rest comfortably with warm water and add your favorite essential oils and soak. Add mineral oils to increase your soaking experience.

Try Body (Dry) Brushing Dry brushing is ancient body detox technique that addresses the lymphatic system. Gentle brushing of your skin helps improve the flow of toxin buildups that can block your lymph nodes, causing inflammation. Body brushing stimulates blood flow and acts as detoxifier, breaking up toxin deposits in the body. Using a simple dry brush with soft bristles or a loofah, start by lightly flicking your skin, starting at your feet, and working your way up to the heart, focusing on the feet, backs of knees, groin, underarms and the collarbone. All movement should be focused toward the heart.

Give Yourself a Cupping Facial When people hear cupping, they think about hotspots pulling blood into the skin, leaving a visible mark. However, a cupping facial uses special cups placed on the skin to create gentle suction, stimulating blood flow to reduce inflammation and activate lymphatic drainage. The width of the cup doesn’t

pull blood to the surface, so it won’t be visible. Using a facial cupping set and face oil helps to remove impurities and improve blood flow.

Focus on Your Skin Basic skincare is even more important today, since wearing face masks can be tough on the skin. To improve your skin’s condition, follow these steps.

Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type, then rinse the cleanser off with lukewarm water. Exfoliate: Remove dull skin with a pumice rub or chemical exfoliator. Or you can try alpha beta hydroxys and lactic acids, which are very popular and safe to use on a regular basis. Mask up: Use a hydrating mask after exfoliation, once a week. Moisturize: Nighttime is the best time to moisturize. Follow up with sunscreen moisturizer during the day.

• • •

“Give yourself permission to take time for you,” adds Miller. “Making time for yourself will help you better take on the day, be more productive, and feel more centered and connected.” To learn more about spa amenities and locations near you, visit www.KOHLERWatersSpa.com. (BPT) l

Teen START THE NEW YEAR WITH A 2021 will be a fresh start for us all. And to kick the year off right, many families will be committing themselves to eating better. So why not set yourself up for success by making a few small changes that will help make your big resolution more attainable?

H

ere are a few simple ideas and easy steps you can take that will help that New Year’s resolution stick:

Make a Weekly Plan You don’t need to micro-manage yourself to create a weekly menu that’s easy to stick to. Choose one day each week to pick out your meals, and on that same day, make a list of the items you’ll need to pick up at the store. Use a notetaking app for your grocery lists that you can update as needed.

40 TEEN

NewFood-i As you’re searching for meal-planning inspiration, check that your meals are balanced and include:

• Quality proteins - seafood is often a healthier substitute for meats (you can rotate between fresh, canned and frozen options) A variety of colorful veggies Whole grains as opposed to refined grains

• •

When choosing your meals in advance, keep convenience in mind. Is it easy to make? Does it require a lot of prep work? Is it something the whole family will eat?

Favor Your Freezer Frozen food can shave off a lot of time from your dinner prep. When shopping, look for lean protein, like SeaPak Coconut Cod, to stock your freezer, then you’ll be set for the week ahead. Frozen seafood is high in protein and low in calories. Try pairing it with coconut rice, zoodles or couscous. Garnish with tropical flavors like mango salsa or lime for a delicious workday meal! Or add sauteed spinach and veggies for a quick dinner.

FLUENTIAL JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021

Prioritize the Protein

Reach for healthy protein options at every meal. Challenge yourself to try something new and change up your routine. For example, fish and shrimp are easy swaps for ground beef or chicken when making pizza or tacos, raw nuts or edamame are perfect for when you’re craving a crunchy snack, and lentil or chickpea pasta is a great alternative to traditional pasta options.

Prep Your Pantry Do a quick pantry inventory: Choose your favorite shelf-stable foods and arrange them front and center so they’re top-of-mind while meal planning. Donate all items that are not out-of-date but that you don’t expect to use anytime soon. After it’s organized, refer back to your cupboard for meal inspiration. Rice is an excellent complement to your protein and veggies will brighten up any meal. Set yourself up for success this year by making sure you have healthy, convenient foods in your pantry, fridge, and freezer. A little planning makes it that much easier to stick to your goals. Celebrated as the most advanced gaming TV on the market, LG’s 2020 OLED TV lineup raises the bar, providing an immersive and smooth gaming experience. The LG OLED TV reduces screen tearing (when a screen shows visuals from multiple frames) or other distracting visual artifacts like lag and stuttering.

Research Gaming Controllers Whether you’re an amateur or a seasoned gamer, it’s worth investing in a controller you love. These new systems come with controllers, but many gamers prefer to upgrade to options that best fit their gaming style. You’ll need to decide between cord and wireless: Some people prefer the cord, so they never have to worry about batteries running out while others swear by wireless for freedom of movement. When researching controllers keep muscle memory in mind. Past gaming experiences reflect on your skills in

4 Productive2021 TIPS FOR A

A

s the calendar turns to 2021, consider these key products and processes to stay productive next year.

Find a system (and stick to it): Creating an organizing system is an easy way to ensure your at-home workspace is ready for optimal productivity. Designate space to house all your work items – a drawer, cabinet, or box – and keep work items organized by type (pens, papers, computer gear, etc.) At the end of each day, transitioning to “offline hours” can be easier when you have a place to stow your work items.

Start your day clean: Studies have shown cleanliness has a direct impact on productivity. Yet, many people struggle to find the time and energy to clean, especially at the end of a busy day at home. An option like The DEEBOT T8 from Ecovacs provides a hands-free cleaning experience, complete with the time-saving benefits of an all-in-one robot vacuum and floor mop, along with TrueDetect technology to avoid tangling in small objects. Easily controlled via an app, just set it to clean before bed and wake up to a tidy workspace.

46 TEEN

Break up your day: With so many hours at home in front of a computer, workdays can get a little monotonous. Break up the day to make working from home feel as “normal” as possible – shower in the morning, take a walk or drive to coffee then make time for at least two breaks throughout the day. Some people have found success with the Pomodoro Technique, which is breaking your day up into 25-minute chunks of work, with 5-minute rest periods. If you continue to work until you feel like taking a break, odds are you’ll overwork yourself until it’s too late to take the “big break” you had in mind. Bookend your days with mindfulness: At the beginning and end

of each workday, do a 3-5-minute mindfulness meditation. Before signing on to work for the day, allow your mind to fully focus on the day’s tasks at-hand. Signoff by doing another mediation to end the day and let go of any worries or stresses you might have. Incorporating this tactic into your daily routine can help create a natural boundary from work and home while also restoring peace of mind. n fact, it takes the average pet owner almost four months to get into the flow with a new four-legged family member, according to a survey by Royal Canin. Eight in 10 respondents said the first year of pet ownership is the most important, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The survey found 64% believe the first year is also the most difficult and deciding how to train a new pet was cited as the most important decision pet parents have to make. “Bringing a puppy home is a hugely rewarding experience for pet owners, but it’s also a time of huge challenges and steep learning curves,” said Dr. Jill Cline, pet nutritionist and site director of Royal Canin’s Pet Health and Nutrition Center. “In addition to helping your puppy adjust to its new home, you can support your puppy’s health now and always with a nutritionally complete diet tailored to its specific needs.” Make welcoming a new puppy a rewarding experience for the whole family with these tips.

Arriving Home Your puppy may be feeling stressed by new sights, sounds, smells and the

separation from its mother. Manage the noise and activity to avoid adding to this stress. As soon as you get home, take your puppy to your yard or outside area so it can go to the bathroom. Use positive verbal reinforcement when the job is done. Once indoors, block off a safe area and let your puppy sniff and explore on its own time. Getting acquainted with a new place takes time and lots of exploring. Some puppies can be overwhelmed by too much human contact, so allow your puppy to come to you.

Getting Settled Puppies like to know what to expect. Plan your routine for feeding, potty trips, exercise and grooming so you can get started on day one. If you know what routine your puppy had before adoption, it’s best to continue for consistency until your puppy is settled. Any sudden dietary changes can cause stress or digestive problems, so for the first week or two, give your puppy the same food as its previous owner, following the feeding recommendations on the package.

Your puppy’s eating spot should be away from where you and any other pets eat. Allow your puppy to eat in peace to prevent it from feeling nervous or protective. Puppies tire easily and need as much as 18-20 hours of sleep per day for healthy development. A crate near where you sleep lets your puppy see and smell you but keeps it from wandering off. Put something that carries your scent in your puppy’s bed along with a blanket to snuggle into. Remember to schedule regular veterinarian visits and gradually introduce your puppy to new experiences like sounds, car travel, walks and other animals. It’s also important to begin behavior training right away to develop good habits from the start. If you’re interested in getting a new puppy, before making a decision on which breed best suits your family and lifestyle, you can see all 196 registered breeds during the 2021 AKC National Championship. CoolWeather

t’s almost never too cold to head outdoors when you’re well-prepared. On your next cool-weather hike or camping trip, keep these considerations in mind for a safe and comfortable experience:

Between a rock and a cold place: Not only will the addition of a sleeping pad under your sleeping bag make your tent a comfier place to get some quality shut-eye after a long day of hiking, rappelling or fishing, it will also provide an important additional layer between you and the cold ground, helping keep you warm. Lightweight and compact, many models are inflatable and pack up neatly between uses.

Sure-footing: When trail condi-

tions will potentially be slick, it’s always a good idea to bring along the equipment needed to stay sure-footed. Be sure to wear waterproof hiking shoes or boots with solid traction and consider using trekking poles for further stability.

• Tech zone: Staying aware of shifting conditions is especially important when

adventuring in the cooler months. Wearable tech, like Pro Trek watches from Casio, can help. Rugged and waterresistant up to 100 meters, these watches provide crucial information such as altitude, location, barometric pressure, as well as sunrise and sunset times. These features can help you with navigation, planning and staying on top of weather conditions. Ranging in price between about $200-$500, it’s easy to find a model that meets your needs, whether you’re an angler or a whitewater rafter.

Health and wellness: In chilly weather, sun protection and hydration remain just as critical as they do on hot days. Be sure to wear sunscreen on any exposed skin, along with lip balm containing SPF and sunglasses offering UV protection. If drinking cold water outdoors doesn’t appeal to you this time of year, heat beverages before hikes and stow them in an insulated thermos. COLD WEATHER

Consider these tips from the experts at Discount Tire to help ensure your tires are ready for winter.

Maintain Proper Pressure The air inside your tires supports the weight of your car, and as the outdoor temperature drops, so does your tire pressure. For every 10-degree drop in ambient temperature, your tires can lose about 1 pound per square inch (PSI) of pressure. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle and check your tires at least once a month to ensure they are filled to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation level, which can be found in the instruction manual or inside the driver’s door. Also, if your vehicle has a spare tire, remember to check its inflation level as well, as it may be different. Many cars may have been sitting idle due to the pandemic. Activities being cancelled, working from home and more frequent dining in have kept more cars off the roads than usual. However, just because you haven’t been driving doesn’t mean your tires have stayed the same. Tires can still lose air pressure, around 1-2 PSI per month, even if they aren’t being used. Some tires may also vibrate after sitting for a while. These concerns can be solved with a quick tire checkup.

Check Your Tread Tread depth helps determine a vehicle’s safe stopping distance. You can check your tires’ tread depth by sticking a penny upside-down in one of the grooves. If President Lincoln’s entire head is visible, it’s time to replace your tires to ensure you’re able to stop in time in conditions that typically accompany the winter months.

Invest in Winter Tires In extreme cold, the tread rubber of all-season or summer tires can stiffen and lose the ability to provide sufficient traction. Winter tires are made from softer rubber to maintain pliability, and the tread design features thousands of extra traction edges for added grip. If you regularly drive in temperatures of 45 F – the same temperature at which

you can begin to see your breath – or below, replacing all four tires with winter tires can help provide more control and deliver as much as a 25-50% increase in traction over all-season tires, which could be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble.

Rotate Often To increase tread life, rotate your tires every 6,000 miles, or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. One easy way to remember is to have your tires rotated every other time you have your oil changed. As you prepare your vehicle for safe winter travel, visit DiscountTire.com for more tips, a personalized tire guide and to find a location near you. (Family Features) l

is how people will achieve them, given the financial pressures and major life events many continue to experience throughout the pandemic.” This year, 65% of Americans are considering a financial resolution for 2021, which is down marginally from last year (67%), but still quite strong given the headwinds experienced by so many families. Younger generations appear to be more committed to actively improving their finances in the new year, with 78% of all Gen Z and Millennial respondents considering a financial resolution compared to 59% of all Gen X and Boomers. “Younger generations are building up their careers, families and finances, so it makes sense they have important financial resolutions to make. Still, Gen-

X-ers and Boomers also experienced significant financial challenges in 2020 and may want to consider making some resolutions of their own to build a stronger financial future particularly when it comes to retirement readiness,” continued Watson.

Making a resolution, and checking it twice Resolutions are an important start, but the key is to keep good financial routines going strong well beyond January and ultimately have them become lifelong habits. The study reveals the key to a successful resolution is the good feeling of making progress and setting clear and specific financial goals. Having someone to help keep you on track and hold you accountable also plays a role, as nearly one-in-five indicated this was a major reason they were able to stick to a

financial resolution last year. In fact, more than three-quarters (77%) of people working with a financial professional were able to stick to their financial resolution in 2020, compared to just half (50%) of those who did not work with one.

Putting 2020 in the rearview To help build a better financial future, consider these three things you can do to move forward:

• Begin with a budget Of those who said they were in a ‘better’ financial situation this year compared to last, more than one in five attributed the success to budgeting better. With so many online tools to make tracking your spending and savings easier, including Fidelity’s Budget Checkup, there are

simple ways to create and stick to a budget aligned with a ‘50-15-5’ guideline.

Replenish that rainy-day fund More than 8 in 10 Americans say they’ll build up their emergency savings in 2021, an important money move considering that many may have tapped into their stash of cash due to financial setbacks in 2020.

• Find new sources of income Nearly two-thirds say they plan to find new ways to make money in the new year, whether with a side hustle, selling items online or getting a part-time job. And with 30% of Americans planning to ‘declutter’ their homes in 2021, there’s a good opportunity to find more than just loose change in those cushions and closets.

This study presents the findings of a national online survey, consisting of 3,011 adults, 18 years of age and older. The generations are defined as: Baby Boomers (ages 56-74), Gen X (ages 4055), millennials (ages24-39), and Gen Z (ages 18-23; although this generation has a wider range, we only surveyed adults for the purposes of this survey). Interviewing for this CARAVAN® Survey was conducted October 14-21, 2020 by Engine Insights, which is not affiliated with Fidelity Investments. The results of this survey may not be representative of all adults meeting the same criteria as those surveyed for this study. Margin of error is +/- 1.79% at the 95% confidence level. Smaller subgroups will have larger error margins. (BPT) l
