Presence Over Presents What do your children want more of this holiday season? They might tell you it’s more toys, or a new bike, or a Barbie Dreamhouse. More likely, though, the gift they want the most is… you. More time spent cuddling on the couch. More time to show you what they made at school or talk about their day. More time to shoot basketballs or kick soccer balls with you, go on walks around the neighborhood with you, or “help” you around the house.

back on their childhood and remember me as always present in some way. I hope they remember a mom who was eager to see the new thing they built in Minecraft, or play a game of Monopoly, or listen to them talk about who chased who on the playground.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Or they might just want to know that you’re physically there, in the room, ready to “mom” if needed. This is usually the case with my two boys as they get older. They are transitioning beyond the “cuddle on the couch” stage, so I’ve had to find other ways to be present with them. Sometimes this looks like taking them out for hikes and donuts. Sometimes it looks like finding a reason to silently be in the same room as they are. But either way, I’m hoping that both of my children will look

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY KIM HARMS, THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Top Spots to Snap a Selfie at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Nothing says love quite like capturing memories of family and friends. This holiday season, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has some fun ideas for that holiday card, calendar or social media post.

animals. Find it on level 4. *Tip: Take a photo from the ground before the carousel gets moving and angle the camera up to include the animals and faux stars. Take another with the animal’s head in the foreground and your child sitting on top.

Photo Ops in WinterFaire

Bumblebee greets visitors entering the Welcome Center. The iconic Transformer stands 17-feettall, weighs a ton and was originally a prop in the 2007 movie Transformers! *Tip: Whenever taking a photo of something large, stand back a good distance to get the entire object in the frame and have the family member stand close to you so you see their face in front and the object looming large behind them.

WinterFaire is filled with colorful characters and picture-perfect backdrops — and the colorchanging, magical fountain is spectacular. “I have the best luck with up-close, candid photos of kids enjoying themselves,“ says Dave Rust, chief photographer of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “Pose kids too much, and it zaps all the fun. If they want to stick their tongue out at the chameleon or make funny faces with Santa, let them. Those are the photos you cherish years later and will love sharing at your kid’s high school graduation or wedding.” Rust adds that smartphone cameras work great in the museum. “Some exhibit spaces are a little dim in places where people walk, so try bringing your family members close

and use the phone’s flash. And don’t forget to tap on the part of the picture you want in focus.”

Super Selfie Spots Here are the top spots in the museum for family photos: Look for the T. rex with a ‘tude. You will see Rheta the Tyrannosaurus rex and her feathered head just before you enter Dinosphere® on Level 1. *Tip: Look for angles that will make it seem like the dino is chomping down on your head (all about spatial positioning). You don’t have to go ‘round and ‘round to know Carousel Wishes and Dreams is full of color and magical

The best angle of Dale Chihuly's Fireworks of Glass can be found underneath it on the Lower Level.*Tip: Get down on your knees and aim the camera at your friend on the rotating seat. But make sure you angle up so you see the colorful ceiling, too.

The dome inside Dinosphere® transports visitors to vividly colored times of the day and night on the Lower Level. *Tip: Wait for the rich pink/purple sky. Pose your family between the T. rex and the triceratops, and use a flash. The view from space is literally out of this world in Beyond Spaceship Earth, aboard a recreated portion of the International Space Station on the Lower Level. *Tip: Little ones love sitting inside the recreated Soyuz capsule like a real astronaut.

The Reuben Wells should get the family moving full-steam ahead in All Aboard! on the Lower Level. The 35-foot long, 55-ton legend was once the most powerful locomotive in the world as it pushed cars up the hill and supported them on the descent. *Tip: Stand at the front of the train and have friends pose in front of it under the overhead lights. Race fans can sit in a real IndyCar show car on Level 3 and pretend they’re driving in the Indianapolis 500. *Tip: A great angle for this one is to kneel four-feet in front of the left tire and angle up so you see the tire, car and the colorful artwork on the wall. The museum would love to see your creations. Use #atTCM hashtag to share your memories.

Last-Minute Holiday Trips

Make the season even more magical and fun with these quick getaways out of town. If you’re craving a last-minute getaway with your family this holiday season, consider one of these drivable destinations that would make a perfect quick trip out of town.

Angola

Columbus

Fort Wayne

Harrison County

Wintertime is a great time to head up to Angola, located in the northeastern part of Indiana. Pokagon State Park is a must-visit for families who love the outdoors — the park offers cross-country skiing (rentals are available), sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating, and trails that are perfect for cold-weather hikes. The park’s biggest draw during the winter months is definitely the Pokagon Toboggan Run, which is one of the tallest and fastest toboggan runs in the United States. You can zoom down the quarter-mile track at over 30 mph! A few miles north of Angola is where you’ll find Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve in Fremont, home to 250 bison. Tours are available during the winter on Saturdays and Sundays via an open-air vehicle. When it’s time to come in from the cold, catch a family-friendly flick at Brokaw Movie House, a vintage 1931 first-run movie theater in downtown Angola.

A quick drive south of Indianapolis will take you to Columbus, Indiana, a city known for its modern architecture and public art. But it’s also a city with lots for families to do! Start by visiting Kidscommons, a children's museum in downtown Columbus. It’s the perfect place for littles ones to play and explore, with three floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits. Kids will enjoy designing, climbing, creating, and taking a trip down the world-famous giant toilet. Across the street is The Commons Indoor Playground, an amazing space that is free and open to the public. The indoor playground features infant and toddler areas, slides, a tunnel and a two-story Luckey Climber. For a dose of outdoor adventure, head to Mill Race Park and go sledding down the hills if there’s snow on the ground, or take a leisurely stroll along the scenic walking trails. Round out your visit with a meal at the historic Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum, where you can indulge in delicious sweets while learning about the history of the parlor.

Downtown Fort Wayne is a great place to visit any time of the year, but there’s also lots to do in the winter. Enjoy a stroll through Headwaters Park, and then stop to ice skate in the fresh air at the Headwaters Ice Rink, open through February. Warm up in the lush tropical gardens at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, or be inspired by the permanent and visiting exhibits at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Be sure to visit Electric Works, Fort Wayne’s new and eclectic hotspot that opened in early 2023, built on the historic GE campus and given new life. Inside, you’ll find Union Street Market, the region’s first food hall and public market, featuring dozens of vendors. Of course, no family trip to Fort Wayne is complete without visiting Science Central, where you can explore more than 200 hands-on exhibits for kids of all ages. *Above photo credit: Brooke Nicole Todd

Located in southern Indiana, Harrison County is one of the best places to explore the state’s history above ground... and underground, too. Indiana Caverns and Squire Boone Caverns, two of the more popular caverns in the state, will have you exploring underground streams, cave formations and fossils below the earth’s surface. And you don’t have to worry about winter weather when you visit a cave, because the temperature underground is always a constant 52 degrees! Other historical activities families can do include touring Indiana’s first state capitol in Corydon, historical sites like The Battle of Corydon Memorial Park, The Governor’s Headquarters, Constitution Elm and the Leora Brown School. Another must-see is the Harrison County Discovery Center, with its interactive, high-tech displays that makes history engaging for all ages.

Amidst this work, last year KI purchased 17 acres of farmland on the southside of Indianapolis to expand their food initiative.

Aristotle famously said, “Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.” This insight is especially true in the modern world where youth are facing pressures that have real impact on their lives. Whether it’s isolation, access to resources, or just social support, they need the help of the people around them. This is what propelled three members in the Indianapolis community to launch the Kheprw Institute (KI) in 2003. The premise was powerful. Under the founders — Imhotep Adisa, Paulette Fair and Pambana Uishi — KI began as a non-profit organization with a purpose to create a formal experience for five particular young black men to grow and thrive. Now, KI has grown to serve hundreds of young people of all backgrounds, with a focus on community empowerment and self-mastery.

At its core, KI is about growing community wealth, but not simply in the financial sense of the word. “Wealth itself is really much broader than that,” says cofounder Imhotep Adisa in a KI video interview. “It’s your intellectual wealth,…the breadth and depth of your relationships with others in your community, spiritual wealth, your heart, music, art…All those things make up wealth in your community.”

26 INDYSCHILD.COM / DECEMBER 2023

Middle school and high schoolers have an opportunity to learn more about the importance of community wealth through KI’s internship program. Students can decide between technology, urban agriculture, or environmental tracks, all under the umbrella of ESTEAM (entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, art and music). No matter what direction they choose, the goal is to learn critical thinking skills, leadership development, and to sit under mentors for the year they participate.

KI also created a youth development program called We Run This, for youth re-entering society from prison. Students learn culinary skills, nutritional awareness and entrepreneurship. The program offers an opportunity for young adults to learn from mentors while gaining

important skills in catering and food services that can help them thrive outside of incarceration.

“We’re holding each other accountable to love and to community,” says Adisa, in a 2020 WISH-TV interview.

Over the years, KI has expanded to offer programs and events that range from providing funding for businesses serving under-

KI continues to grow, f lourishing from the community they’ve built and continue to build. For Indianapolis youth facing challenges, we all have to start somewhere. “You start with what you have, where you are,” says Adisa in a video interview.

To connect with the Kheprw Institute, go to their website: kheprw.org. On the site, you can find the application for the youth internship program, as well as details on all the other work they’re doing in the Indianapolis area.

SPECIAL NEEDS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Profile On: Ausome Indy

This local organization is providing life-changing access to resources for children with autism and their families. insurance coverage to provide immediate resource support to families and caregivers.

What is the story behind how this organization was formed?

There are many organizations in Indianapolis doing incredible work for individuals with autism, and Ausome Indy is definitely one of them. Ausome Indy is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization providing tools to help children with autism self regulate, find comfort and navigate the world around them. They work with therapists, case managers, social workers, guardians, foster parents and other community members to provide the tools that will help children thrive where they are. Ausome Indy also launched a moms group called Ausome Indy Moms, where moms can connect, share and celebrate in a safe and inviting space. The members benefit from the monthly virtual meetings, information sessions, coffee meetups, sensory-friendly events, care packages and more.

28 INDYSCHILD.COM / DECEMBER 2023

My sister, Ellen, and I co-founded Ausome Indy in honor of our late mother who was a special education teacher and fierce advocate for families in foster care, and in honor of my son, who has autism. Since we founded in 2019, an awesome community has emerged around service, support and friendship. Recently, we launched our Ausome Indy Moms group (ausomeindy. org/moms), reaching hundreds of moms with connection, support and friendship.

How can people get involved?

To find out more about this awesome organization, we reached out to co-founder Kate Miller, who was happy to answer our questions and let us know more about the organization and how we can get involved.

What should our readers know about Ausome Indy? Ausome Indy provides life changing access to resources for children with autism. We provide sensory support tools, communication devices, and other tools to help kids self regulate and find comfort. Specifically, we work to support children in foster and kinship care and beyond, to fill gaps in state and

Follow our social media account, come to or volunteer at one of our events, and help us raise funds through peer-to-peer fundraising and awareness! Visit our website at ausomeindy.org and ausomeindy.org/moms.

What else should our readers know about Ausome Indy? Children with autism and their families are less likely to go to public events, restaurants and outings due to the challenges and complexities in sensory processing and transitioning for children with autism. If you don’t already know and love someone with autism, chances are you will. One in 36 children are diagnosed with autism, and that statistic continues to rise. Please be kind. Go out of your way to be inclusive, invite the ausome moms and kiddos you know to outings, call and check on them and invite them again, and make sure to ask about ways you can support their kiddo so they can join you. As parents, we can give so much to one another’s lives by simply showing up for each other and encouraging a safe space for our children to thrive together.
