LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Totality Awesome April

t’s here! April is finally here. I don’t know what it is about this month, but it is always a highly anticipated month for me. Maybe because April signals spring, new growth and warmer weather. I really like warmer weather.

This year, April also means an amazing event: the total solar eclipse, which takes place on April 8, 2024. Much of North America will experience the eclipse in varying degrees, but the area where I live happens to be directly in the path of totality. According to the NASA website, this means we might be able to experience some very cool and unusual things, like:

• a 360 degree sunset

• bright stars or planets in the darkened sky

• cooler air temperature

• an eerie silence, as many of the birds and animals will go silent

Whoa! I’m most excited to experience the total eclipse with my children, and see their reaction to the world around them change, even if just for seven minutes or so. Crossing fingers for clear skies that day!

Right now, I still haven’t figured out where my family will experience the eclipse. There are so many events happening to celebrate this monumental day. Of course, you could just step outside and see the eclipse in your own backyard — while wearing proper solar eclipse viewing glasses, of course. Or you can party with others at one of the eclipse events we listed in “Celebrate the Total Solar Eclipse in Indianapolis” on page 14. Either way, this solar eclipse will be an event to remember!

Have a totality great month!

A Stellar Adventure at The Children's Museum: Eclipse Extravaganza!

O nce upon a time in Indianapolis, a buzz of excitement filled the air. The talk of the town and of the entire scientific world was the upcoming total eclipse of the sun on April 8, 2024. Indianapolis was right in the path of totality and families were gearing up for an astronomical experience of a lifetime.

As the big day approached, parents gathered their little ones and shared a crucial piece of advice — never look directly at the sun, as it could severely hurt their eyes. Luckily, protective safety glasses would be handed out at various locations throughout Indianapolis, ensuring a safe and spectacular view of the eclipse at the designated time.

For families eager to prepare for this celestial event, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis emerged as the go-to destination for the weekend leading up to the eclipse. The museum was not just a place to witness the eclipse on Monday, but also a hub of knowledge and fun activities leading up to the big day.

NASA scientists were set to visit on Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, 2024 with the excitement of the actual eclipse on Monday. Helio physics experts and space telescope gurus were lined up to lead presentations on April 6 and 7, delving into the study of the sun and its cosmic relationships.

Come Monday, April 8, The Children's Museum was hosting an Eclipse Extravaganza, a public event day filled with giveaways while supplies last, eclipsethemed activities and an outdoor space in the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience® for families to marvel at the solar eclipse. Safety glasses, essential for a protected view, would be part of the giveaways and visitors were advised to purchase

Sponsored content brought to you by

tickets in advance and to have a back-up plan for that Monday as limited space was expected.

The Art Activity Station at the museum offered eclipse-themed activities and shadow art, engaging young minds while emphasizing the scientific concepts behind the eclipse. Meanwhile, the Humanities Activity Station presented "Stories in the Sky,"

an activity station exploring mythological explanations for eclipses across cultures, weaving in the fascinating science behind these celestial occurrences.

In the STEMLab, within Corteva Agriscience ScienceWorks, a special program called "Shadows of the Moon" would run continuously during the weeks leading up to the eclipse, guiding visitors through the differences between the moon's phases, solar and lunar eclipses, and the seasons based on Earth's tilt.

Families could explore these literary wonders and receive recommendations for further reading. Volunteers from the Indiana Astronomical Society would set up an activity station, allowing curious minds to peer through telescopes, learn about different types and discover the wonders of the universe.

As families prepared for the celestial spectacle, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis stood as a beacon of knowledge, adventure and family fun, making the eclipse a magical experience for everyone who came to see it.

Indianapolis Indians

Go to Victory Field on April 2 for the Indianapolis Indians season opener for baseball and fireworks! If the temperature is below 60 degrees at first pitch, all fans in attendance receive a ticket to another April home game of their choice.

Conner Prairie

Springtime is a great time to explore the outdoor grounds at Conner Prairie. Meet and greet baby animals, play at Treetop Outpost with its 30-foot

suspension bridge and prairie lookout, and explore the habitats of the animals that call the park home with Discover Habitat, Conner Prairie’s newest outdoor experience.

White River State Park

White River State Park offers nine different attractions — including Indiana State Museum and Eiteljorg Museum — across 250 beautiful acres in downtown Indianapolis. All are a must-do! But the park itself is a great (and free) way to enjoy the outdoors. Stroll along the Indianapolis Canal Walk, which runs through the park, or rent a paddle boat or kayak to float along the canal.

Nature Playgrounds

It's no secret that Indianapolis is home to many beautiful playgrounds, but these natural ones stand out for their unique design — bringing you closer to nature.

Nature Adventure Playground at Jill Perelman Pavilion: This playground is truly a hidden gem and is the only public park in the area with a zip line!

Prather Park: Little archeologists, history buffs and dinosaur lovers: We have the perfect park for you! Prather Park in Carmel is a one-of-a-kind park that includes features you’ll see nowhere else around Indy.

The Children’s Garden at Coxhall Gardens: This beautiful park, located on the west side of Carmel, is a magical hidden gem, and it’s the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for a more analog park experience for kids.

The Monon Trail

Enjoying a walk or a family bike ride on the Monon Trail is a sure way to know spring is here. The Monon Trail is 18.1 miles long and stretches from Downtown Indy, all the way up to Sheridan. You will find some of Indy's best local shops and restaurants along the trail. Here are a few of our favorite family-friendly spots to get a quick treat:

BRICS (Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station): 901 E. 64th St, Indianapolis

Canal Creamery: 6349 Guilford Ave., Indianapolis

Just “Pop” In!: 6406 Cornell Ave, Indianapolis

Newfield's Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park

This 100-acre park is free to access and open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Families can enjoy nature while playing on the unique playground features or while jumping on the one-ofa-kind Funky Bones by Dutch artist Atelier Van Leishout.

Playgrounds

Enjoy some spring weather at one of Indianapolis's top playgrounds! Here are a few of our favorites we can't wait to hit this spring break:

Colts Canal PlaySpace: Located in downtown Indy on the north end of the downtown Canal Walk.

Hummel Park: This Plainfield park is where natural beauty and recreation come together. The park has multiple play-

grounds, expansive green space, an amphitheater and creeks that flow throughout the property.

Lawrence W. Inlow Park: This Carmel park is sectioned into three separate playgrounds, each with fun and different things to enjoy.

Holliday Park: A family favorite located right in the middle of Indianapolis. This classic park spans over 94-acres and has everything a family needs for a perfect spring day at the park.

Old City Park: Located in the heart of downtown Greenwood. The centerpiece of the playground is the 20-foot cube tower. The play tower is the first of its kind in Indiana and one of only three in the country.

worth the drive:

Cincinnati Museum Center

If you’re looking for a fun place that’s a short drive away, the Cincinnati Museum Center is a must-visit destination. It has an impressive collection of museums housed in one huge space, so there's something for everyone to enjoy. From exploring dinosaur bones at the Museum of Natural History & Science, to stepping back in time at the Cincinnati History Museum, to learning through play at The Children’s Museum, this center offers educational and engaging experiences that are fun for kids and parents alike.

Freewheelin’ Community Bikes

Providing bicycles and teaching youth life and leadership skills that improve their physical and mental well-being.

f you’re ever near Indianapolis’ North Central Avenue and notice a group of young people riding bikes to the local ice cream shop or library, there may be more to the outing than meets the eye.

Chances are, you’re catching a glimpse into the mission of Freewheelin’ Community Bikes, the only youthfocused community bike shop in Indianapolis and the surrounding counties.

“We want to teach young people about how awesome this affordable transportation is,” says LaNisha Clark, Freewheelin’ Bikes executive director. “We show them how to maintain a bike and how to ride in an urban setting.”

What Is a Community Bike Shop?

The concept of a community bike shop is popular all across the United States, with the hopes of making bikes more accessible to people. Freewheelin’ Bikes has taken this idea to heart. It’s estimated that since its founding in 2008, Freewheelin’ has impacted over 5,000 students through a wide-range of programs.

“I’ve been a part of the Freewheelin’ community for three years as both a camper and now as an apprentice,” says 14-year-old Jake Laverty-Lee. “I used to be very shy when faced with new people I haven’t met or in things I haven’t tried. The Freewheelin’ community has made me more extroverted.”

Kids aged 10-18 can participate in Freewheelin' Bikes. They offer B.R.A.K.E.S. camps, a Y.E.E.T. paid internship for 14-18 year-olds, and Apron programs, which are bike mechanic classes. Young people can even earn a bike upon

completing the Green Apron level class. This level includes eight hours of learning about bike tools, bike parts, and survival concepts like fixing a flat tire or what to do when a chain pops off. Then, the students spend eight hours out on supervised rides on roads in an urban atmosphere.

The hope is that as kids move through the program, they’ll gain confidence and learn important skills for life. “They pull out onto that street on their bike and they smile and they look free. It gives them a strong sense of independence,” Clark says.

Along with youth programs, Freewheelin’ Bikes is also home to a bike shop that offers refurbished bikes, accessories, and repair work for community members. The shop helps to fund Freewheelin’s community work and provides people with affordable and reliable transportation.

Looking Ahead to the Future

Moving forward, Freewheelin’ Bikes plans to continue traditional programming, while expanding their community

outreach. They’ve started offering a daytime homeschool class, as well as an initiative to take tools and bikes into underserved communities to teach them about how bikes can transform your life.

Fourteen-year-old Lee has a message for kids who want to join Freewheelin’ but are nervous about taking the first step. “I would tell them that every road has bumps, but being on a bike makes them all the more fun,” he says. “Give it just a few hours and they’ll want to tell all their friends about Freewheelin’, too.”

If your child is interested in joining Freewheelin’ Bikes, check out freewheelinbikes.org for their upcoming programs or email lanisha@freewheelinbikes.org

Awoman’s reproductive health goes hand-in-hand with her overall well-being. That’s why it is important to prioritize and understand our reproductive health needs at every stage of life. Whether it's finding the right doctor or adapting to the changes that come with age, it’s good to be proactive and informed about your reproductive health needs.

Finding the Right Doctor

One of the most important steps in maintaining good reproductive health is finding a doctor who understands your unique needs and guides you on the right path. Here are some tips for finding the perfect doctor for you.

Ask for recommendations. Reach out to friends, family or local parenting groups (online or in real life) to get recommendations for reputable healthcare providers. Personal experiences can help you find doctors who prioritize patient care and will work with the issues you might be experiencing.

Do your research. Take advantage of online resources, such as local directories, healthcare review websites, or the websites of hospitals and clinics. Look for doctors who specialize in women's reproductive health and have a solid reputation in the community.

Consider the location. When choosing a doctor, think about things like the doctor's office location, wait times and office hours. Ideally, you want a doctor whose office is conveniently located and flexible with scheduling. A local doctor can make a big difference, especially for busy moms.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AT EVERY STAGE

Women’s health needs change as they age, and it’s important to adapt.

Verify insurance coverage. If you’re using insurance, make sure that the doctor you're considering accepts your insurance plan.

Schedule an initial consultation. You’ve found a great doctor — now it’s time to make a visit! Book an initial consultation with your potential doctor to discuss your specific concerns, priorities and health history. This meeting will help you gauge their communication style, approach to patient care, and ensure that you feel comfortable entrusting them with your reproductive health.

Changes in Reproductive Health as You Age

Just as our lives and bodies change with time, so does our reproductive health. Here are some ways that our health needs change as you age.

In Your 20s and 30s:

For many women, the 20s and 30s are prime reproductive years. You’ll want to focus on:

Regular Check-ups: Schedule annual gynecological exams to monitor reproductive health, get necessary screenings, and discuss contraception options.

Family Planning: If starting a family is a goal, consult your doctor for preconception counseling, personalized advice and guidance on prenatal care.

In Your 40s and 50s:

As women transition into perimenopause and menopause, their reproductive health changes a lot. During this time of life, you will want to pay attention to:

Menopause Symptoms: Yes, even women in their 40s start getting pre-menopause symptoms! Some of the symptoms of menopause (or perimenopause) include hot flashes, night sweats, and changes in mood or sleep patterns. Consult your doctor for guidance on managing these symptoms.

Bone Health: Most healthy women won’t need a bone density test until they’re 65, but depending on your individual risk factors, your doctor might recommend this screening earlier. Also discuss calcium and vitamin D intake to prevent osteoporosis, which becomes more common during this stage.

Regular Screenings: Women in their 40s and 50s need yearly mammogram screenings for breast health. Consult your doctor for their guidance on cervical and colon cancer screenings.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT):

If you are experiencing severe menopausal symptoms, discuss the potential benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy with your doctor.

Taking a proactive approach to your reproductive health is important at every stage of life. By finding the right doctor and understanding how reproductive health changes as you age, you can ensure that you receive the care and support you need for years to come.

ADVOCATING FOR YOUR AUTIStic Child

How to ensure your child receives the care and resources they deserve.

We are our children’s biggest cheerleaders. We root for them. We protect them. We teach them. And we advocate for them. All children need people who have their back when it comes to school and life in general, but this can be doubly important for kids with autism.

If your child has autism, you might sometimes feel overwhelmed trying to gain access to the best care and resources possible. The good news is that people want to help your child succeed. And good news: Those resources do exist — it’s just a matter of getting plugged in.

Karrie Veteto, director of autism and behavior services, and Jaylen Weir, autism resource specialist, both work at Easterseals Crossroads in Indianapolis. They are passionate about helping individuals with disabilities and have worked together to compile answers to questions that will hopefully help you feel better equipped when it comes to advocating for your child.

Arm Yourself with Knowledge

When it comes to effectively advocating for your child’s needs, Veteto suggests first understanding your child’s disability. “The more parents understand, the more they will know what services are appropriate for their child and what their needs are,” she says. “This includes understanding your child’s strengths and weaknesses.”

Weir recommends that parents familiarize themselves with their child’s rights for education and the law. In addition, it’s important that parents know who is involved in their child’s services and who to go to with assistance.

“Some ways you can accomplish this are by being involved and attending your child’s services and activities, as well as asking your providers questions so that you better understand their goals for your child,” Weir says.

And while this might feel like no small feat, especially if your child has a multitude of health care providers and specialists, Veteto and Weir emphasize the importance of finding an organization system that works best so that you can easily access the information you need for your child at any given time. This might mean:

• carrying a file with you to every appointment with important health, contact and test information

• keeping notes on your phone with answers to frequent questions asked

• compiling a list of questions you have for upcoming appointments

20 INDYS CHILD .COM / APRIL 2024
WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

In addition to advocating for your child’s health, you’ll also want to learn how to gain access to vital resources within the local community. This too can feel incredibly overwhelming. Another piece of good news is that the people you are already working with, or online platforms you may already be on, can be excellent resources.

“Parents should start by asking their child’s primary care provider about local resources,” Veteto says. She also recommends looking for Facebook groups and online support groups to connect with, as well as the following organizations for support:

• Easterseals Crossroads: eastersealscrossroads.org

• Indiana Resource Center for Autism: iidc.indiana.edu/irca/index.html

• Autism Society of Indiana: autismsocietyofindiana.org

• The Arc of Indiana: arcind.org

• Family and Social Services Administration: in.gov/fssa

Advocate for Education

We all want our kids to receive the best education possible. To help ensure that your child receives the education they deserve, Weir emphasizes the importance of learning your child’s educational rights.

“The more you know, the more questions you can ask and suggestions you can make in order to help develop an effective IEP [Individualized Education Plan] or 504 Plan,” Weir says.

This might include bringing advocates to your child’s IEP meetings. For more assistance with education specifically, check out INSource at insource.org. It is always helpful to establish good communication with your child’s teachers and the staff. You can also try to connect with others in the community to learn about the supportiveness of local districts.

Know You’re Not Alone

Advocating for your child might sometimes feel like a daunting task. Fortunately, it is a road you do not have to walk alone. There are other parents who are on similar journeys who you can connect with, medical professionals who want to see your child succeed, and organizations designed to help parents manage the challenges they can face when advocating for their child with disabilities.

We want our children to succeed, and it’s encouraging to know there are so many others that want the same, and are there to offer help, support and guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions and to stand up for the things you know are right. You know your child and you know what they need best. Trust your gut and move forward in confidence knowing that you are the best advocate for your child and their rights, education, inclusion and health will always be worth standing up for.

Tips for Planning Special Needs Playdates

Helpful ideas to introduce your child to new social experiences.

laydates are great for both kids and parents. They break up the monotony of the day and add scheduled time for socialization and play. For parents of special needs children, choosing the right playdate can relieve stress and anxiety.

As you begin your planning, remember you know your child better than anyone. If structure and routine are important, be sure to prepare them in advance for the playdate. Consider putting the date on a calendar, and count down the days together. Also, letting them know what to expect once you are there may help to decrease anxiety and prevent any meltdowns from occurring.

Here are some tips to make your next playdate a success from Tasha Cleaver, former executive director of Carter’s Play Place.

What tips do you have for parents who want to have playdates in their own home, or at a friend's home?

The best playdates include a variety of options. Take the time to find out what the other playmates attending enjoy. The parent(s) will appreciate your thoughtfulness, and it will help the child feel comfortable in your home with a preferred activity. Keep in mind they don't necessarily have to engage in the same activity at the same time.

Parallel play, or side-by-side play, is an important step in childhood development. Let the children take the lead. If one wants to paint while the other stacks blocks in the same area, consider that a win!

What tips do you have for parents who want to have playdates outside of the home?

With warmer weather coming, the outdoor playdate returns! Look for locations that provide outdoor and indoor options that are well maintained and safe for everyone. Some examples are your backyard, parks, nature preserves, and indoor/ outdoor recreational centers. How about an outdoor movie playdate? Or how fun would a photo scavenger hunt at a local park or nature preserve be? SO much fun and great for all ages!

Some playmates may get overwhelmed by outdoor sensory stimulation, sensitive to temperatures, or may have access-mobility needs. Reach out to see what everyone needs to make the playdate accessible and comfortable for all.

Are there certain things parents should take into consideration when planning play dates?

The “Golden Rule for a Successful Playdate” is to set the parameters of the playdate along with the other parent(s), and take everyone’s needs into consideration. Setting the time, location, who will attend, whether there will be snacks, if parents will stay or drop off. However, be willing to take the lead! Some parents will likely appreciate the effort on your part and it may strengthen the relationship between adults, too.

SPECIAL NEEDS
WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON
P

ndividuals with disabilities encounter barriers and challenges that many others don’t. As a result of the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act of 2014, states were allowed to create savings programs for individuals with disabilities, giving Hoosiers with disabilities the chance to open savings and investment accounts without affecting eligibility for assistance programs, such as Medicaid or SSI. The funds in these accounts can be used to pay for qualified disability expenses that improve the individual’s health, wellness or quality of life.

INvestABLE Indiana has set out to knock down financial barriers for individuals with disabilities, opening the door to financial stability and freedom.

INvestABLE Benefits

An account with INvestABLE is beneficial on many fronts. From tax advantages to ease of use and everything in between, INvestABLE is committed to ensuring that all qualifying individuals get the most out of their dollars. Benefits include, but are not limited to:

Special tax advantages. Earnings on investments are tax-deferred and withdrawals from accounts are tax-free when used for qualified disability expenses.

INvestABLE Indiana:

Giving Hoosiers with Disabilities the Ability to Save

No impact on current benefits.

You will continue to be eligible for Medicaid, no matter your account balance, plus balances under $100,000 are excluded from the SSI resource limit.

User-friendly.

INvestABLE accounts can be opened with as little as $25 and can be accessed by phone or online through a PC, tablet, or phone. PLUS, the Ugift® feature lets anyone contribute money to your account.

Qualifications

Now come the big questions: Do I qualify? What counts as a qualified disability expense? INvestABLE spells it out simply.

You can open an account for yourself or an authorized person can open an account on your behalf if:

· Your disability was present before the age of 26, and

· You experience blindness as determined by the Social Security Act, or you are entitled to receive SSI or SSDI benefits or have a similarly severe disability with a written diagnosis from a licensed physician.

Qualified disability expenses include, but are not limited to:

· Education

· Health and wellness

· Housing

· Transportation

· Legal fees

· Financial management

· Employment training and support

· Assistive technology

· Personal support services

· Funeral and burial expenses

· Basic living expenses

Please note that account withdrawals for non-qualified expenses will be taxed at the account owner’s tax rate and subject to a 10% federal tax penalty and applicable state taxes. If you’re unsure about whether your withdrawal qualifies or not, INvestABLE staff can answer any of your questions and help you make informed decisions.

Big Picture

The motivation behind the nation-wide ABLE Act and Indiana’s own INvestABLE is that folks with disabilities should be able to save as much as possible to be able to afford their daily and medical expenses, without losing access to public assistance programs. INvestABLE understands that when all individuals are on the same financial playing field while maintaining access to quality care, our communities as a whole thrive.

INvestABLE also knows that the thought of saving and investing can be very intimidating. But with simple, easy-to-understand options, individuals with disabilities can feel confident in their choices.

Offering a wide range of investment and savings options for every goal and comfort level, Hoosiers can breathe a little easier and trust in their financial security with INvestABLE Indiana.

For more information about INvestABLE Indiana (the " Member Plan"), call (888) 609-3457, or visit in.savewithable.com to obtain Plan Disclosure Documents, which include investment objectives, risks, charges, expenses, and other important information about the Member Plan.

Please read and consider the Plan Disclosure Documents carefully before investing.

Before investing in any ABLE program, you should consider whether your home state offers an ABLE program that provides its taxpayers with favorable state tax or other benefits that are only available through investment in the home state's ABLE program.

The Member Plan is sponsored by the state of Indiana and administered by Indiana ABLE Authority. The Member Plan is intended to be a qualified ABLE plan offered through the National ABLE Alliance. Ascensus College Savings Recordkeeping Services, LLC, the Program Manager, and its affiliates, have overall responsibility for the dayto-day operations, including investment advisory, recordkeeping and administrative services.

Ready, Set, Summer!

Prepping Your Autistic Kid for Summer Camp

or many kids, summer is the best time for outdoor activities and spending time with peers.

For children on the autism spectrum, summer might also come with extra challenges, including preparing for and attending summer camp. That’s because at camp, children with autism won’t be experiencing the typical everyday routines they are used to. Nor will they be in a familiar environment. Plus, they may be meeting new people and trying to make new friends.

All of these and more can contribute to your and your children’s anxiety about summer camp. So, we talked with Erika Trump, a pediatric occupational therapist focusing on sensory integration. Read on for her best tips for helping you and your child prepare for a fun and successful summer camp experience.

Pick the Right Summer Camp

First off, set your child up for success by picking the best camp for their needs.

“Be strategic in choosing a camp,” Trump says. “A child that has never been away from you may have difficulty at a sleep away camp in another state.”

Other factors include asking yourself if your child prefers extra movement. If so, they may struggle in a camp that requires a lot of seated work, Trump says. Also, a child who has challenges in new situations might want to attend a camp that their friends or siblings are already attending. Depending on all these factors, the camp

you pick for your child will look different to fit those needs.

Help Your Child Imagine Camp

Children with autism can have difficulty in new situations, where they don’t know what to expect. “The parent is always the expert on their child, and this is the prime time to use that expertise to think through all the aspects of camp to determine where challenges might arise, and provide support or accommodations to help create the most positive experience,” Trump says.

Find ways to help your child mentally prepare for camp, such as showing them pictures and videos featuring summer camp, reading stories about summer camp, or even visiting the exact camp they will be attending ahead of time. “If possible, meeting a staff member or counselor ahead of time can also be helpful to allow a child with autism to find a person that’s familiar once they get to camp,” Trump says.

Talk with the Camp’s Leaders

It may seem obvious, but you know your child best. “You know what makes them great and what things create challenges,” Trump says. “So consider all the physical, sensory and social components of camp, and identify where barriers might exist and create supports to overcome these barriers.”

It can be helpful for you to have a conversation with the camp staff about supports that work well

for your child and identifying situations that could be stressful or triggering. “For example, if a staffer knows that your child has difficulty with loud noises and everyone at the camp eats all together in a loud environment, they may be able to provide an alternative place to eat or provide headphones to reduce overwhelm from the noise,” Trump says.

This could also be a good time to consult others who know your child well and who can offer valuable insights to support your child. “Don’t forget about others who are a part of your child’s life, like therapists or teachers,” Trump says. Ask them to weigh in on how their environments, like the school room, playground or therapy rooms, have impacted your child. If the summer camp has these spaces or something similar, think about how to prepare your child for these new spaces through the therapist or teacher guidance.

Don’t Forget to be Excited!

Though your child may have their fears about summer camp, it is important to frame this experience as a positive one for your child. “Camp is often a core memory for kids, and it shouldn’t be any different for autistic children,” Trump says. “Have faith that you have prepared your child for this moment.”

Everything you have helped your child through up until now will have laid a strong foundation that will prepare them for this new experience, too.
