Preserving the Magic

The other day, my youngest son asked that age-old question that usually pops up around this time of year:

“Mom, is Santa Claus real?”

Hmm. Uh. Well. Even though I had been preparing myself for this question, it caught me off guard and I had to think fast. So I said, “What do you think? Do you think Santa is real?” Sometimes, the only answer is no answer. Sometimes, it’s best to deflect.

And it worked. My son began talking about kids in his class who say Santa is real, which led to talking about a classmate who lost a tooth at school today, which led to him asking for a snack.

Whew! Crisis averted. Santa lives to see another day at our house.

I know that Santa’s days are numbered, though. My oldest son hasn’t said it out loud, but I know he knows that Santa probably wasn’t the one to log into his Roblox account last year and add $25 worth of Robux. But like the good big brother he is, he’s keeping mum on the subject. Big brother is helping to preserve the magic for little brother, even if it’s just for a little while longer.

One day, the question about Santa will be answered once and for all at my house. But the magic of the holidays — the special food, the beautiful decorations, the festive events, the memories we make together as a family — will always be real and never in question.

Happy holidays!

Kid-Tested, Kid-Approved

Those worried about finding the perfect gift for little ones should try looking off the beaten path in museum stores. They feature toys that encourage fun, family learning and are not often found in big box stores.

During the annual Kid-Tested, Kid-Approved event, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis opened up boxes to let kids play with toys and games and vote on their favorites. The top choices are added to a list for grownups to conveniently reference just in time for the holiday season.

Buckle up for number one — a tiny toy with big excitement. The Micro Slot Racing Set features two 1:87 scale slot cars with headlights and remote controls with turbo buttons and speed control. It provides a fun way for little ones to learn how STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) affects the speed of cars and how they can make predictions of who might win.

Dinosaur lovers will be fascinated by RoboRaptor. The small remote controlled velociraptor ranked number two. It walks forward and backward, lights up and roars with the touch of a button.

Third place was a literal surprise to those who placed a card inside the Pancake Monster. The pop-up game is triggered by a spring mechanism. The monster pops up unexpectedly to ‘swallow’ a player’s arm after a random number of button presses. If this happens, that player has to collect all the cards – a major bummer since the first player to get rid of all their cards wins!

Number four goes to Mag Pad Pictures. Children hold the power of art in their hands with a magnetic pen as they trace pictures to make beads appear on the surface. Soothing clicking

sounds happen when the magnetic balls are moved around the board.

Wrapping up the top five is Tongues Out! In this game, the pug puppies eat lollipops. Their tongues are dyed the color of the lollipop they had. So, with each turn, players try to match two lollipops on the dice with two squishy puppies that they think licked them. Gently squeeze the little pups and their tongues pop out. The first player to match six Pugs with the corresponding lollipops’ color wins. Parents will no doubt enjoy this unique way of teaching counting skills, memory and social play.

Sometimes the best gift is time shared together. Consider purchasing a membership to your favorite museum and ring in the new year during Countdown to Noon, which allows families to celebrate at a family-friendly time on New Year’s Eve.

Harmony Tea Shoppe

You’ve probably eaten a sundae at some point in your life. But have you ever tried a matcha sun dae with red beans, Froot Loops and granola in it? You’ll find these unusual — but delicious — sun daes at Harmony Tea Shoppe, located in the Keystone at the Crossing neighborhood of India napolis.

First, you choose your base of soft serve ice cream: matcha (green tea) or taro (a purple root vegetable that is similar in taste to a sweet potato). Then, toppings like red beans, sponge cake chunks, cereal, mochi balls and fruit are added. Then an other swirl of soft serve is dolloped on top. The sundaes are served in a cup, so it’s the perfect treat to take

and eat on the go, or enjoy your treats inside the modern shop.

Sundaes aren’t the only treats you’ll find at Harmony Tea Shoppe. You’ll also find a huge menu of tea bever ages, including bubble tea, milk tea and smoothies. Choose from one of their signature drinks, like a mango jasmine green milk tea with cheese foam, or a caramel bubble black tea with dark brown sugar. The sweet ness level of the beverages can be customized to accommodate your sweet tooth: you can ask for less sugar (75%) or even zero sweetness (sugar free). Pair your beverage with one of Harmony’s mochi donuts — chewy donuts made with rice flour — and you have a great treat.

BUCKET LIST

Our roundup of fun and festive things to do in Indy this season.

The holidays are here, and there is no shortage of family activities to enjoy in Indy. If you’re looking to add some Christmas fun to your month, here are some ideas to add to your family’s winter bucket list!

CUT YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

There’s something magical about picking the perfect Christmas tree with your family and cutting it down your self! Indy has a few U-cut options, all located outside of the circle. On the south side, you’ll find Jay’s Tree Farm in Mooresville; on the west, Evan Whispering Pines in

Danville. Up north, visit Dull’s Tree Farm in Thornton; and on the east side, Clearview Family Christmas Tree Farm is located in Arlington.

ENJOY A NUTCRACKER PERFORMANCE

The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition, and fortunately, there are many performances happening in Indy. Watch the renowned Indiana Ballet Conservatory remake this iconic classic at the Murat Theatre on December 16-18, and see Ballet INitiative perform the Nutcracker with a twist at Basile Theatre at the Athenaeum on the same dates. For the young kids, the Nutcracker Sweets at the Toby Theatre at Newfields is a short-but-sweet 1 hour long on December 9-11.

MEET SANTA’S REINDEER

When it comes to Christmas, the reindeers are just as important as Santa. This year, there are plenty of places around Indianapolis to visit Santa’s hooved helpers. In Carmel, reindeer will be popping up at Clay Terrace’s Village Green on three days this month: December 3, 10 and 17. Downtown Greenfield ’s Reindeer on Main event gives visitors a chance to meet Santa's reindeer before they head back to the North Pole on December 17. And Indianapolis Public Library patrons have two chances to get up-close to reindeer during storytimes at two branches: West Perry Branch Library on December 19, and Martindale-Brightwood Branch Library the following day.

SEE THE HOLIDAY TRAINS

Visiting Jingle Rails at the Eiteljorg Museum — and see ing the miniature trains chugging through those minia ture scenes — is a true Indy tradition. Want to experience a real train? Then hop on the Reindeer Ride at the Nickel Plate Express in Noblesville to sing carols, enjoy a cookie and cocoa, and meet Santa during hour-long train rides through Hamilton County.

STROLL THROUGH A CHRISTKINDLMARKT

The Athenaeum’s inaugural Christkindlmarkt is the place to eat, drink and be merry this holiday season, and features traditional festival elements and special German traditions through December 18. In Hamilton County, enjoy a delightful blend of German holiday food, drinks, gifts, decorations, special performances and ice skating at downtown Carmel ’s Christkindlmarkt through December 30.

VISIT WITH SANTA

Santa is a busy guy — he has been spotted all over Indy! You’ll find Santa all season long at the Indiana State Museum’s Conservatory Crossing (with special times and dates for sensory-friendly visits) and Jolly Days Winter Wonderland at The Children’s Museum , among other places. Share breakfast with Santa at Conner Prairie on select days this month, or take selfies with Santa in Broad Ripple at the Lights Up Holiday Festival on December 4.

WATCH A MERRY MOVIE

Holiday movies should be on every family’s bucket list!

On December 10, catch a showing of The Muppet Christ mas Carol at The Athenaeum’s Cereal Cinema, and enjoy a free bowl of cereal while you’re there, too. Or bundle up and catch a free showing of Elf outdoors at Grand Junc tion Plaza in Westfield on December 2.

These are just some of the great ways to celebrate the holidays in Indy. Go out and make the most of this merry season!

Make It with Milk This Holiday Season

When you close your eyes and think back to your cherished holiday memories, what comes to mind? Gatherings at grandma’s, treasured traditions, classic Christmas movies, and the smell of that sweet breakfast-bake straight out of the oven may be familiar.

With almost 700 dairy farms in the Hoosier state, our Indiana dairy farm families know what it takes to provide healthy, nutritious foods throughout the year, and they appreciate time around the holidays to continue their beloved traditions with those they love the most. Every holiday season, there’s effort paid to end the year on a high note. This year, why not make the conscious effort to continue your traditions with milk?

Here are five easy (and almost daily!) ways your family can incorporate milk into your holiday season:

Oatmeal. Every year, oatmeal makes the list for the 10 most popular breakfast item in America. Whether it’s the old-fashioned variety or instant oats, making oatmeal with milk not only enhances the

consistency, but one serving of milk adds 8 grams of protein and 13 essential nutrients to that sweet or savory dish!

Side Dishes. Many holiday menus will focus on the main dish, but not every family loves turkey or ham. For some families, the side dishes make the meal, so why not add milk? Looking for creamier mashed potatoes? Add milk. Wanting to thin out grandma’s gravy? Add milk. Craving a more decadent mac and cheese? Add milk.

food banks, and you can make a difference. Contact your local food bank and see how you can help! A gallon of milk will make the difference in a family’s holiday season.

Milk for Santa. Perhaps the most well-known and treasured holiday tradition is leaving a big, ice-cold glass of milk out for Santa, accompanied by cheese and carrots for the reindeer. Nothing compares to the benefits of providing nature’s perfect beverage to the big, jolly guy. Santa needs that wholesome milk to quench his thirst and consume enough protein to keep him going throughout the night!

Remember, #Winners DrinkMilk , and no one is winning more than Santa Claus on December 24!

Gifts. The holiday season is about more than food and gift giving; the holiday season is also about spreading good cheer to those in need. Milk is the most requested, least donated item in

Dessert. The American Dairy Association Indiana Inc. (ADAI) is hosting a “Baking Holidays from Scratch” cooking contest, and the recipes encourage two to three dairy items per dish. Some of the sweetest holiday memories are rooted in baking with family memories, decorating cookies and even delivering plates of treats to neighbors down the street. Making holiday favorites with milk and dairy products adds flavor while simultaneously supporting dairy farmers in your community. Visit WinnersDrink Milk.com/recipes for some tried-and-true traditional treats.

We wish you a very merry holiday season filled with delicious dishes, memorable moments and the taste of health and wellness through milk. If you’re making a new dish with milk this year or simply sharing milk with friends, tag @INDairy on social media or use #WinnersDrinkMilk . ADAI will be on the lookout for good boys and girls, and just may send some treats your way!
