The Gift That Keeps on Giving Want to know one of the quickest ways to feel like you’re a part of your community? Get a membership to a local place of interest. This could be a museum, zoo, art center, recreation center or any other place that tickles your and your family’s fancy. I say this because, when my family and I moved to the Midwest, that was one of the first things we did. My children were young — one was a baby and the other was a pre-preschooler — and we got a family membership to our local children’s museum, and another family membership to a history museum. Having those two memberships gave us a reason to get out of the house. It gave us a familiar destination to explore, and it gave us a place to go to burn off energy during the cold weather months. We especially got our money’s worth with our children’s museum membership. One week — when the weather was especially nasty, and my children were especially squirrelly, and we all needed to get out of the house — we visited the children’s museum five days in one week! Needless to say, my children have become very familiar

with some of our local museums, and they hold a special place in my family’s hearts. As the gift-giving season approaches, one of the best gifts you can give to your family (or another family) is the gift of a membership. A membership is the gift that keeps on giving! If you’re looking for some ideas for memberships to give this season, check out “Give the Gift of Family Fun with a Membership” on page 16. It might inspire you to opt for the gift of memories and experiences this year! Happy November!

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY KIM HARMS, THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Get Ready to Explore WinterFaire, an Enchanting New Winter Carnival A new tradition begins this winter that features a whimsical cast of characters who will bring carnival favorites to an enchanted forest in a new exhibit at The Children’s Museum. Families can visit WinterFaire’s magical forest, filled with games, an ice cave and all kinds of fun places to explore. There is also a giant slide — with a winter twist — just outside the exhibit in the Sunburst Atrium. The exhibit opens November 18, 2023.

pin-shaped penguins; play SkeeBall; race down a hill on a snowboard or saucer; and aim for the high score as you throw “snowballs” at targets. One of the WinterFaire characters sure to get things done is Gerty. This beaver is a no-nonsense kind of gal and master woodworker. When WinterFaire opens, you can put on an apron and get to work with the hard-working beaver.

Imagine a snowy wooded area with shimmering lights and the chatter of cute creatures. But how did they get their names, you wonder? Our social media team @ChildrensMuseum asked for suggestions, and families couldn’t wait to share ideas for our new forest darlings. “We are so thrilled that our fans helped us choose the perfect names for our friends,” says Jennifer Pace Robinson, president and CEO of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “Gerty, Flip, Ember, Indigo and Storm will be part of the carnival-like atmosphere of WinterFaire’s enchanted forest, where children and families will be delighted by interactive elements and a stunning environment of color and lights. We are beyond excited to welcome visitors into this brand-new tradition to create new wintertime memories together.”

Ember is a curious and fluffy red fox. Her warm, welcoming smile will greet families at they enter the enchanted world. Storm is WinterFaire’s regal, adventurous and brave ice phoenix. He greets visitors at the ice cave where little ones will discover activities to help them build, jump, climb and balance. Help reconstruct an entrance that has fallen in (Storm will thank you) and climb up in the lookout and nest to discover phoenix eggs. The kids can slide back down, and if they’re feeling as daring as Storm, carefully cross the deep “chasm” in the cave!

Indigo, a mystical and knowledgeable chameleon sits in the middle of the space, perched on a fountain that is the source of all things magical in WinterFaire. The color-changing critter encourages families to work together to touch all six symbols on the fountain. The fountain’s frozen plumes will change colors — and so will Indigo’s body! No carnival would be complete without games! Flip is an energetic and carefree harbor seal who will get you excited for a variety of all-ages activities with a winter twist. Match the colored shapes on penguins to those on ice floats; toss rings around

“Children often build strong bonds with characters that have distinct personalities because they themselves either want to feel or act that certain way, or they already connect with that character’s personality. These connections create a safe, easy and accessible way for children to be themselves and begin to practice new skills while sharing their feelings and showing affection,” says Elyse Handel, early childhood education manager for The Children’s Museum. “Families will be able to play in different environments with interactive, hands-on activities that target a variety of developmental skills, which include fine and gross motor skills by climbing, balancing and hopping.” Families are sure to have a blast — playing, laughing and making lifelong memories together — in the new, one-of-a-kind indoor winter experience.

Rustic Root Tea Room Nestled on Main Street in Beech Grove stands The Rustic Root Tea Room, a shop serving up hot cups of tea and a place to slow down and enjoy each other’s company. The tea room opened its doors in February 2017 after owner Tammy Hanna’s husband encouraged her to act on her retirement dream of opening a tea room before she actually got to retirement. As a child, she marveled at her mom's china set, admiring the delicate cups and plates, largely inspiring her dream of opening a tea room one day. Today, her dream is run alongside her sister, Jenny Wensel. Hanna and Wensel’s main goal with the tea room is to provide a place for patrons to sit down and slow down from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with a nice cup of tea, of course. Currently, the menu boasts a variety of sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts, and some brunch op-

tions. It also features a High Tea Time menu, which includes four high tea combinations: Cream Tea, Petite Tea, Princess Tea and Grand Tea Time. Additionally, The Rustic Root Tea Room hosts a Princess Tea one Saturday a month, which allows the tea room's tiniest patrons the opportunity to dress up and be princesses for the day, crown and all. Each tea features a different princess in attendance, with past attendees including Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine and Snow White. In addition to Princess Tea, The Rustic Root Tea Room offers Monthly Murder Mystery Dinners. This interactive dinner includes a four course meal, and a “who dunnit” murder mystery to solve. It also offers exclusive dinners planned and prepared by its head chef. Reservations and walk-ins are accepted. 626 Main St., Beech Grove tearoomofrusticroot.com

Holiday Travel Destinations

These six Midwest locations will really put you in the Christmas spirit! There are some cities that really get into the Christmas spirit — places that are bedecked with Christmas decorations, twinkling lights at dusk and bustling with holiday events. If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas but also want to get away, these six Midwest destinations will add some extra sparkle to your holiday memories this season. Plan a road trip to one of these family-friendly areas that really embrace the Christmas spirit!

French Lick, Indiana French Lick Resort is the place for all things jolly this holiday season. The 50 Days of Lights begin with two grand tree lighting ceremonies and the holiday hoopla stretches all the way into the new year, with Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas cheer spread throughout. With family-friendly activities and a half-million lights brightening the resort, the holidays illuminate brightest at French Lick Resort.

Santa Claus, Indiana Like the name suggests, Santa Claus, Indiana, is perhaps the most famous of all the Christmas towns in the Midwest. Its claim to fame is Santa's Post Office, the only post office in the world with the Santa Claus name. Santa Claus, Indiana, is also home to many other attractions, including Santa's Toy Shop, Santa's Candy Castle, Santa's Stables and more. The 2023 Christmas season is packed with family-friendly events happening throughout the area, including parades and festivals.

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin This charming lakeside town is bedecked with all-things merry each year, during the Old World Christmas Market at The Osthoff Resort, voted the No. 5 Best Holiday Market by USA Today's Readers' Choice in 2022. From horse-drawn wagon rides, ornament making and cookie decorating for children, breakfast with Santa or

a brunch with St. Nicholas and his reindeer, there is a Christmas activity for everyone.

Frankenmuth, Michigan In Frankenmuth, Christmas is a big deal all year round. The town is home to Bronner’s, the world’s largest Christmas store, which is open 361 days a year. This store with all-things Christmas is almost two football fields in size and has almost every imaginable ornament, decoration and trinket you can think of to add to your holiday collection. On weekends from Thanksgiving through midDecember, enjoy the Frankenmuth ChristKindleMarkt, midMichigan's largest open air holiday market.

Clifton, Ohio Historic Clifton Mill puts on a mesmerizing holiday light show every year, with more than 4 million lights strung along the outside of the historic mill, along the gorge and riverbanks, and in the surrounding trees and bridges. It’s worth the trip just to experience the lights, but you should also visit the Santa Claus Museum and the Miniature Village. Santa is there each night, checking his list, right up until Christmas.

Chicago, Illinois During the holidays, Chicago's Daley Plaza transforms into a European-style Christkindlemarkt. Visitors to this annual and free festival will find enter- tainment, shopping opportunities, German food and hot mulled wine. The festivities also extend to other parts of Chicago, too. You’ll find a mini version of the Christ- kindlmarket in Wrigleyville, the State Street Holiday Market with artisans and festive gift options, Holidays in the Loop where Chicago’s downtown area is transformed into a winter wonderland, and lots more charming events popping up in every corner of the city.

experiences and shared activities make the best gifts because they’re unique, memorable and are ultra customizable. Plus, you’re also supporting local attractions and fostering a sense of community. It's a win-win for everyone! Here are a few ideas for places and activities to put on your membership gift list. Zoos, Aquariums & Wildlife Centers For animal-loving families, a membership to a nearby zoo, aquarium or wildlife center is an obvious choice. Not only does a membership to one of these places mean you can visit as often as you like, but a membership also grants you access to special member-only events, such as animal encounters, early registration for camps, exclusive classes and behind-the-scenes experiences.

Museums Many of the benefits described above apply to museums, too. An annual museum membership — whether to a children’s museum, art museum, historical museum, science museum or many others — allows members to go as many times as they want

16 INDYSCHILD.COM / NOVEMBER 2023

throughout the year. Only want to visit for an hour or two? No problem with a membership! You can visit as little or as long as you want without feeling like you have to squeeze the entire museum experience into one day. A museum membership is also a great option to have once the weather gets colder. You can visit when it’s raining or snowing, or when you just need a place to go to get out of the house for a while.

Theaters, Concert Halls & Sporting Events Families who are into performing arts, attending concerts or rooting for the local sports team might enjoy a membership or season tickets at their favorite venue. Memberships like these often come with lots of perks, including priority access and invitations to special members-only galas.

Swim Lessons Many museum memberships also come with other advantages, such as member discounts at gift shops, and reciprocal benefits at other museums, such as free admission. The Association of Science and Technology Centers (astc.org) and the North American Reciprocal Museum Association (narmassociation.org) are two websites that will tell you if a museum has reciprocal benefits with other museums.

Get a jump on next year’s swim season by gifting a membership to a local swim school. Swim lessons are important, and swim schools aimed at kids make the experience fun. Plus, weekly lessons are a great way to ensure the kid on your gift list will be prepared for the pool next summer. Memberships at swim schools often include perks like members-only family swim hours, free swim swag, free treats and more.

Kid Gyms & Trampoline Parks

Sometimes, the best gift isn’t something you can wrap — rather, it’s the gift of time spent together as a family!

Do you know kids who are constantly jumping on the sofa and bouncing off the living room walls? Give them (and their parents) the gift of a kid’s gym membership! There are many different kinds of kid’s gyms, including drop-in places like trampoline parks, to more structured experiences that teach a skill, like ninja or parkour classes.

NURTURING YOUR

Why music lessons for your child are a great investment in their future.

WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT

T

he strumming of a guitar, the trills of a flute, the pounding of drums — no matter the instrument, the magic of music has the ability to captivate and transport us. There are many benefits that come from learning to play an instrument, especially for children. Music lessons, while often thought of as an additional extracurricular activity, are actually a valuable investment in a child's future.

How Music Makes Kids Grow Music is a universal language. It’s more than just a series of notes — it also helps with mental, emotional and social growth.

20 INDYSCHILD.COM / NOVEMBER 2023

Brain Development Many studies have found a positive correlation between music education and cognitive development. A 2013 study conducted by researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital found that early music training can lead to changes in the brain that help in processing the integration of sound and movement. Children who learn to play an instrument tend to have a better memory, attention and problemsolving skills. Reading music, translating it to hand or finger movements, and making sound is a complex activity that stimulates multiple areas of the brain at the same time.

Emotional Regulation Music has therapeutic qualities. Learning an instrument can be a source of pride, boosting a child's self-esteem. It also teaches patience and perseverance, as mastering an instrument takes time and dedicated practice. Children

learn to handle frustrations, set goals and celebrate their achievements.

Social Skills Playing an instrument often involves group activities, like ensembles or bands. These can help teach children teamwork, communication, and how to work with others.

Choosing the Perfect Music Lesson for Your Child There are so many options available today for young musicians that it might seem overwhelming to parents. But

choosing the right lesson doesn’t have to be a difficult task.

Identify Your Child’s Interest Before diving into lessons, gauge your child's interest. Do they gravitate towards a particular instrument when watching performances, or is there an instrument they seem excited to try? It’s important to ensure that the instrument aligns with their interest in order to help them keep with it. Many music schools and band programs offer instrument try-ons to help kids find a good match.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra offers the Teddy Bear Concert Series, a lively series of performances created for children ages 3 to 7 years old. Besides listening to great music, the audience is invited to try the instruments and talk to the musicians.

Start Early, But Not Too Early While it helps to introduce children to music at a young age, pushing them too early might backfire. For instance, while a 4-year-old might be ready for a ukulele or a keyboard, they might find it challenging to handle a full-sized violin or saxophone.

Research the Teacher A teacher's expertise and teaching style play a significant role in a child's musical journey. Look for instructors who are knowledgeable and are good with children. It helps to attend a trial lesson or observe a class to ensure compatibility. Also consider things like the location, duration, cost, and the commitment involved. Some children (and parents) might be ready for intensive training, while others might want to start with shorter, more frequent sessions. The Music Teachers National Association (mtna.org) is a great place to begin looking for a music instructor.

Stay Engaged

Consider Group vs. Individual Lessons Individual lessons provide tailored attention, but group lessons can be more interactive and fun, and allow children to learn from their peers. Depending on your child's personality and learning style, you can decide which setting might be best. School of Rock (schoolof rock.com) has several locations throughout the area that offer both individual and group lessons.

Parents play a big role in their child's musical journey. Attend their recitals, listen to their practice sessions and provide constructive feedback. Your involvement can be motivating and encouraging to your child!

Hitting the Crescendo With music lessons, it's important to remember that the journey is more important than the destination. Whether your child goes on to become a professional musician or simply enjoys playing an instrument as a hobby, the skills and experiences gained are what truly count.

Carmel MAMAs group at ecmamas.membership@ gmail.com or on Facebook.

Whether it’s a mom’s night out, stroller walk, lunch, playdate at the park, book club, or even a visit to the zoo, there are day and evening options for participation. The end of the year is a particularly fun time to join, with holiday meetups scheduled into the new year.

If you’re in Westfield or on the western side of Meridian Street in Carmel, then contact WCW MAMAs at wcwmamas.org to become a part of their club.

Membership As adults, we take on many roles in life. For Alicia Lammrish, before becoming a member of the East Carmel Meet a Mom Association (MAMAs), she realized she needed some support for her role as a mom. When Lammrish moved to Carmel, her first child was not even a year old. “I didn't really know anybody around here. l was lonely and needed interaction because all I did was live and breathe my child,” she says.

Despite her social anxiety, after seeing a post on social media about a MAMAs meetup, she showed up. “Instantly I felt like I found people who actually understood what I was going through. I joined on the spot,” Lammrish says. She continues to attend with her four children.

Built by Moms, for Moms Both East Carmel and West Carmel Westfield (WCW) MAMAs broke with the national MAMAs group in 2020 with the hope that they could include a broader-range of moms. They’ve succeeded, with over 160 women involved in the local chapters.

“This group is built by moms, for moms,” says Stephanie Rose, president of WCW MAMAs. “We want to provide opportunities for moms to build meaningful relationships with other moms and for our kiddos to build friendships, too!”

Members get together to do a wide-range of activities, with options to join in as little or as often as they want. “We really try to have events scattered throughout the month that can

Tannehill said the heart of these two groups is to focus on support and community for their members. “We have a diverse group of moms,” she says. “We don’t want a mom out there wondering whether they’ll be accepted. We welcome all of our members with open arms.” Membership in MAMAs is simple. If you’re a mom, then you’re eligible to join either group, with a $30 fee due for a full year of membership. If you live east of US 31, in parts of East Westfield, or Noblesville, then you can join by contacting the East

Membership in MAMAs has truly changed Lammrish’s life, as she attends meetups with moms from her local chapter a few times a week. “It’s hard to be in a sea, alone, and be a mom,” she says. “You need a community of people, just to have that group of women to say, ‘We’re here and you don’t have to do it on your own.’”

TEENS & TWEENS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Creating a Great College Campus Visit Make the most out of a college visit to help your student find the perfect school.

As I type these words, I am sitting in a car with my family, headed to a college town over four hours away so our senior daughter can experience her first official college campus visit. It feels surreal. I know everyone said the time would go fast, but when I was spending my days and nights changing diapers, nursing infants, and trying my best to maintain decent nap and sleep schedules — it sure didn’t always feel that way. But the words were spoken in love and wisdom from those who had gone before me. And while it may not have felt like their words could be true — they most definitely were. Time does go fast. And now, here we are.

And, oh boy, can it feel overwhelming. If you have found your head swimming with thoughts of scholarships, application deadlines, ACT and SAT scores, tuition costs and more, know you aren’t alone. So many of us are scratching our heads along with you.

As I sit here with the expanse of highway stretching out before me, I am reminded of why a college visit can be so beneficial. Tomorrow, I anticipate many of our questions will be answered. As we stroll the campus, tour the classroom and dorms, and get a chance to talk with professors and students, we will get a clearer picture of all the university has to offer and what it takes to be considered for admission.

26 INDYSCHILD.COM / NOVEMBER 2023

But I am just a mom in a minivan headed down the highway with a head full of thoughts and a heart full of emotions. What you need is to hear from a professional. So, I talked to Laura Lowder, senior admission counselor with Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, who has taken the time to answer questions and provide some tips to help you have a successful and great college campus visit.

What should students consider when choosing schools to visit?

What tips do you have for students who are preparing to go on college visits?

Are online visits beneficial if students can’t visit in-person?

Do not rush. Utilize your time. Attend a class, meet with faculty and current students. Also, explore the city that the university is located in.

Make a list of the top three things that are important to you in a university and find institutions that meet those needs. Utilize websites to find the schools that offer what you want. There are more than 4,000 institutions to choose from. Visit small, medium and large institutions to find the right fit.

They are helpful in providing basic information, but if it’s possible for you to go in-person, I highly encourage an on campus visit to find that right fit.

Is there anything else you would like parents and students to know? Start early. Have an open mind when visiting an institution. Visit as many schools of interest that you can. Take notes and enjoy the process.

It may feel overwhelming at times, but there are a lot of resources available to help those of us who are navigating the college application process for the first time. Take deep breaths, mom and dad — your baby will do great. Let’s eat this elephant one bite at a time. We’ve got this!

Th e P ow e r of Foster Parenting Want to get started in foster care? Here’s what you need to know.

L

ooking to make a positive impact in a child's life? Foster care can be a challenging yet extremely rewarding experience. Families wishing to explore this path can learn more about the licensing requirements, responsibilities of foster parents, financial help for families, and emotional supports.

Becoming a Foster Parent “There are many factors to consider as the family moves through the licensing process,” explains Matt Ashcraft, director of licensing for Firefly Children & Family Alliance in Indianapolis. In Indiana, the minimum age to be eligible for a foster license is 21 years old; Firefly sets this age at 25. “We also require a unanimous household agreement to become a foster family, including minors of a reasonable age,” Ashcraft adds. Other requirements can include: ∙ May be single, married or cohabitating, but not in process of a divorce ∙ Indiana residency and own or rent your home ∙ Stable income from a source that is not public assistance (although disability and social security benefits may qualify) ∙ Reliable, insured transportation ∙ Qualified background checks for all family members age 5 and older ∙ Sufficient bedroom space and individual beds for each child (children sharing a bedroom should be the same gender)

WORDS BY LINDSAY CONNER

∙ Good physical and mental health of the caretakers ∙ A strong support system of friends and family willing to assist the applicants during and after licensing Families applying for foster care licensure with Firefly generally complete the process in about 90 days, not to exceed one year. “Applicants will receive training that will introduce them to the child welfare system, foster care, trauma and trauma responses, policies and rules, understanding and managing behaviors, available supports, self-care, and other topics that will help prepare them for their first placement,” Ashcraft says. Safety training in first aid, CPR, and disease prevention are also offered.

Financial Help for Foster Families Foster families receive a monthly reimbursement (following the month of service) for children placed in the home. The monthly reimbursement, called a “per diem,” is calculated by a daily, fixed rate based on the child’s age and needs. Additionally, routine and necessary medical care for the child is almost always covered by Medicaid. Additional resources are available to help foster families obtain childcare, meals, and tuition-free enrichment programs, and more. Foster parents who work or attend school may apply for childcare assistance if the foster child is newborn to 12 years old. Children 5 and younger are eligible for WIC, and school-aged children may receive waived school fees and free lunches. A limited clothing allowance is available to children entering an outof-home placement for the first time. “Many volunteer groups, churches and service organizations offer occasional support to foster families such as meals, transportation, or even lawn care and leaf clean-up,” Ashcraft adds. “Groups routinely offer gifts of athletic event tickets, new shoes and coats.” Families can also seek free or reduced cost entry to entertainment, recreation, amusement parks, museums, tours, parks and lodging.

Emotional Support and Responsibilities Foster organizations often offer specialized support and training for foster families. “Even a wellbehaved, quiet child who has experienced trauma

can be masking their feelings of hopelessness and mourning,” Ashcraft says. For all Indiana foster families, a family case manager is assigned by the Department of Child Services. This person will oversee the case for the entire biological family with the ultimate goal of the child achieving permanency through reunification with family or through adoption. “The child welfare system is complex and can be overwhelming,” Ashcraft says. This is why, for instance, Firefly assigns an additional foster care case manager to help explain all those complexities, acting as a bridge between the state and the foster family, and to address the child’s individual needs. Firefly also offers 24 hour assistance for emergency situations that may occur after normal business hours. A foster parent’s role is so much more than providing a safe, understanding and caring environment for a child while including them in their normal family experience. Many children in care require additional medical services, therapy, family visitation, case management, educational supports and more. Foster parents must meet annual and continuing requirements to maintain their license, such as training hours, safety certification, home inspections, and rule compliance.

Relationships with the Birth Family Most children in foster care will have some type of planned visitation with their parents and/or family members. “At Firefly Children and Family Alliance, we encourage this and assist in determining what the most appropriate level of contact is in individual cases,” Ashcraft says. Stronger relationships between foster parents and the child's biological parents can help alleviate the child's loss and improve outcomes for all involved. Contact can vary from simple notes, emails or phone calls to in-person meetings. The level of contact is determined case by case, depending on what’s most appropriate and comfortable for both the foster family and the child’s family. Foster care is not just a system — it's a community, a support network, and a lifeline for children in need. By opening our hearts and homes to these resilient young souls, we have the power to make a lasting impact on their lives and shape a brighter future for our community.

Prevent Parenting Burnout Tips to maintain balance and joy in your home life.

Every season of parenting comes with its unique set of blessings and challenges. There are joys and struggles we experience daily, sometimes simultaneously, as we raise our children.

When caregivers feel rested and less stressed, they can put forth their best effort toward their families. This might look like being more patient, having more energy to play, and being more present in the moment rather than distracted by stress.

You want to do all that you can for your family, but being a “superparent” to a child with special needs can come with a downside — burnout. It's

When parenting responsibilities overlap with work, household chores and other life responsibilities, it can become challenging for parents to make time for themselves. “Most people have heard the saying, ‘You have to put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others.’ What gets scheduled gets done,” Slonaker says.

important to recognize when you might feel that mental and emotional burnout rearing its ugly head. Though it can look different for everyone, parental burnout is often described as a feeling of overwhelming exhaustion and ineffectiveness as a parent paired with emotional distance toward your child. Experts say this burnout may lead to general irritability and frustration; adopting addictive behaviors like drinking or smoking; the onset of sleep disorders and other health issues; and a higher risk of anxiety or depression. It’s easy to see how quickly parental burnout can affect not just one parent but the entire family.

Parental Burnout “Parenting is tough, and there is no instruction manual that comes with children,” says pediatric neuropsychologist and licensed school psychologist Amanda Slonaker, Ph.D., HSPP. “Children are a priority, but you as a parent are a priority, too. It’s important to prioritize self-care to be able to be at y our best to care for your child.”

Tips for Battling Burnout So how can you battle burnout? Start by scheduling time for self-care. People who prioritize themselves have more bandwidth to be able to help others later. Fortunately, there are many practical steps you and your family can take to fit in little bits of self-care in just five or 10 minutes a day!

∙ Take 5 minutes before bed each night to listen to a sleep meditation. Free apps like Calm and Headspace are a great place to start. ∙ Find an interesting podcast and listen to it when running errands. ∙ Is there a book you just haven’t had a chance to read? Schedule 10 minutes before bed or make it a goal to read just five pages per night. ∙ Call a friend or family member while cooking or folding laundry, or simply take a moment to appreciate the quiet during simple tasks. ∙ Take a walk outside. ∙ Light candles for dinner. ∙ Buy or pick fresh flowers and display them in the house. ∙ Eat healthy food, or indulge in something special! ∙ Place positive quotes or affirmations on a sticky note and place it on the mirror. ∙ Keep a small journal and write three things you are grateful for each morning or night. If you can manage to find a little more time than five minutes here or there, Slonaker suggests scheduling an “ideal week” on the calendar. Instead of thinking about how your week typically goes, pencil in

all the things you’d like to see happen. “What do you have to get done and what would you like to do for yourself if you could? Exercise? Meditate? Have brunch with a friend or family member? Sleep for a full eight hours? Schedule it in!” she says. Another helpful tip is to make a list of all the things you have to do in the next week or month. Is there anything on the list that you can choose to say “no” to? “By learning to say ‘no’ to activities and people that drain you, you create more time for yourself and those you love which is a lot more fulfilling,” Slonaker says. Creating a healthy habit can start by doing just one thing just for yourself a week, and then increasing it as you go along. “This might also mean enlisting the help of a partner, friend or family member,” Slonaker says. Parents who struggle with self-care on a consistent basis may need to reach out to their support network. “This can be a friend, family member, partner, counselor/ therapist, or small group within a church or spiritual community,” Slonaker suggests. “No one can push through parenting for years at a time without becoming completely burnt out and exhausted, or even resentful and upset, if they do not focus on their own health and self-care,” Slonaker says. “In reality, you can best take care of others when you take time to take care of yourself. Your children and family are worth it… and you are, too!”

QUESTIONS TO ASK

AT AN OPEN HOUSE To make the most of an open house, it’s important to come prepared with questions. An internet search or a visit to the school’s website will probably answer your most basic questions. But to really get a feel for the school, you’ll want to ask questions that get down to the nitty gritty of school life. Here are some questions to ask at your next open house. Of course, you don’t have to ask each one. Just pick the ones that are important to you. This is your chance to find out about your child’s potential school, so make that time count!

What is the average number of students in each classroom? What academic standards do you use? What is a typical day or week like in your class? What is the typical homework workload for students? How often do the kids have recess or go outside? What kind of technology and software do the students use, and how often? How is technology integrated into the lesson plan? What kind of ongoing training do teachers receive, and how often? What kinds of extracurricular activities, clubs and sports teams are available for students? What kind of support is offered for students who are struggling academically or otherwise? What are the ways for parents to get involved in the school? Can I see samples of students’ work? What kind of school safety protocols are in place?
