Surprise! You're hearing from me this month instead of our wonderful editor, Nicole. I decided to include my voice here because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I had a personal scare with it this past summer. More on that later as I'd like to first give you a little background into my life and my 40 years at Indy's Child!

In 1984, I had just graduated from DePauw University when my mom came across a magazine in Austin, Texas, called Austin's Child . She loved it so much that she wanted to start a magazine just like it in the greater Indianapolis community. She approached me with the idea and said that she and my father would fund it if I would manage the day to day operations. That was almost 40 years ago when no fax machines, emails or internet existed. I wasn't married and I didn't have children but it sounded like a fun opportunity, so I jumped on board.

Soon after, I met my husband, Joe, and had two daughters, Wendy (now 35) and Courtney (now 33). I'm also blessed to have two grandchildren, JJ (5) and Ellie (3). There have been many ups and downs over these past 40 years but I'm happy to say that there have been many more ups than downs and I am so proud to have worked so hard all of these years to see my work baby turn 40 in just a few months!

Now on to the reason I'm writing this month's publisher's note. On page 14 of this issue is an article on the importance of self-exams and regular health screenings. I went in for my regular mammogram screening on May 10, 2023. A few days later, I was asked to come back for an ultrasound. A week later, it was discovered that there was definitely something there, and I needed to have a biopsy. Then, I got the dreaded phone call: they found cancer cells. My heart stopped, the tears flowed, and I was scared of the uncertainty facing me.

Walking into the IU Health Cancer Center was one of the loneliest and scariest moments of my life. I walked in to face dozens of patients who were going through their battles with cancer and thought to myself, “I am one of them now.” I told my husband that I could barely breathe — my heart was pounding a million beats a minute. When they finally called my name, I hesitantly followed the nurse down a long hall to find out my fate. After meeting with my doctor, I felt relieved that my small lump was the size of a pea and she was confident that it would be an easy road to recovery.

On July 11, I had a lumpectomy. Everything went smoothly and I was home within hours to recuperate. After a few weeks, I was allowed to return to normal activities, and soon, I made it back to one of my favorite places: the pickleball court.

I am blessed to have so many loving and caring people around me who were with me every step of the way. I am also grateful that I am on top of my annual mammograms. If I hadn't gone in for this routine appointment, I would be in such a different predicament. My message to all of you is to get your baseline by the time you turn 40, and be vigilant about your annual screenings.

Next year will be a year of celebration! Indy's Child turns 40 and I will continue to celebrate my successful outcome with breast cancer! As your publisher of 40 years, I wish each of you good health and happiness.

ZooBoo Offers a Ghoulishly Good Time

ZooBoo at the Indianapolis Zoo is in full swing! Through October 31, visit the Zoo for Halloween activities, amazing animals and pumpkins galore. Pickleball for a Good Cause

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and each year in October, Indiana-based ONIX Pickleball donates $10,000 to IWIN (Indiana Women in Need Foundation) to increase awareness of breast cancer and help families impacted by this disease.

Freeze dried candy has become a popular TikTok trend recently. From gummy worms to Skittles to M&Ms, TikTokers have been freeze-drying them all.

What does freeze-dried candy taste like? The freezing process makes the candy become a crunchier, lighter textured version of the original. Just like astronaut ice cream.

However, it was TikTok, and not astronaut ice cream, that served as a catalyst for a great idea. Best friends Jaxson Lemieux and Roman Cordell arrived at the idea of opening up a new candy shop in Westfield, featuring almost every kind of candy one could possibly imagine, served in its freeze-dried version. What makes the venture even more cool is that Jaxon and Roman are both teenagers.

The freeze-dried candy store, FreezeDryIt.com , was just an idea in the spring of 2023, and by July 2023, it had an address: 16851 Southpark Drive in Westfield. And, of course, a very popular TikTok channel: @freezedryit.com

Lemieux and Cordell’s most popular TikTok, with over 85,000 views, shows the boys in their candy shop dressed in sparkly cowboy hats, dancing together to Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s song “Barbie World.” The last image of the TikTok shows the boys cradling an armful of — what else — pink freeze-dried candy.

All of the products are made onsite at a commercial kitchen by Lemieux and Cordell. Visitors to the brick-and-mortar store will find an assortment of freeze-dried candies — like Twix, peach rings and Fruit Roll-Ups — and can create their own cup of goodies. They also have freeze-dried fruit and freeze-dried dog treats, too. If you can’t make it down to the store, you can order online to have their treats shipped. Or if you absolutely need your freeze-dried Milk Duds now, FreezeDryIt.Com is on Doordash and GrubHub.

Indy Parks Opens New Park That Includes a Playground

Indy Parks is excited to announce their newest park, which features amenities for all ages and abilities. Rev. Charles R. Williams Park is located at 3242 Sutherland Avenue which sits adjacent to Fall Creek and has a connection to the Monon Trail!

The park’s namesake, Rev. Charles R. Williams, became the president of Indiana Black Expo Inc. (IBE) in 1980. Rev. Williams also founded the Circle City Classic, an annual Black collegiate football game with revenues exceeding $800,000 going towards scholarships for qualifying high school students across the state of Indiana since 1984. Until his death in July of 2004, he served as an effective voice and leader in the fight for the social and economic advancement of African Americans.

This new park honors the contributions and influence that Rev. Charles R. Williams had on our city and state. The 2.25-acre parcel was donated to Indy Parks in 2012 and was a concrete slab with a vacant industrial storage building on the site. In 2015, the master plan was completed and included expanding the park to become a 13.3-acre neighborhood park. In 2022, Indy Parks broke ground on construction,

and one year later, there’s a brandnew completed park for the community to enjoy!

The new park now features playground equipment, horseshoe courts, a picnic shelter, an open lawn area, a small amphitheater to host community concerts, a perimeter loop trail, and a connection to the Monon Trail. Additionally, the playground features a universal express swing, rubberized surfaces in a variety of colors and patterns, a sensory cove, musical equipment, an arch basket swing, and much more. If you’re on the Monon Trail, this is a great spot to stop off to rest and play. We look forward to seeing and hearing about how this park will be an asset in bringing the community together.

A Spooky Journey Through BOOville: The Children's Museum Guild's Haunted House

Wouldn’t you like to know where monsters go?

It could be anywhere in the nation they choose to vacation.

The true facts are they get their thrill at none other than BOOville!

What is BOOville?

BOOville is part of the nation’s oldest continually operating haunted house. The Children’s Museum Guild witches are celebrating the 59th year, and it opens at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis October 10, 2023 and runs through October 31.

What Little Ghosts and Goblins will experience

“BOOville is full of all the Halloween villains: ghosts, an underwater sea creature, the Grim Reaper and so much more,” says Guilda, BOOville’s very own resident witch. Add mad scientists, zombies and werewolves that howl. No need to fear, the good witches of the Museum Guild will be near to keep those silly monsters in check with lights on while they hand out treats during AES Indiana’s Lights-on Hours. Older ones who “dare to be scared” can visit the haunted house during AAA’s Frightening Hours with the lights off — setting the stage for creepy stuff.

Sensory Sensations

“A visit to BOOville is a full sensory experience with moans and groans,

howling and hooting, creaky floors that may wobble when you walk, giant glowing eyes and rooms that make you feel like your own eyes are playing tricks on you,” says Guilda. “Take this time while your child is creating their sensory cauldron to explain that the items within BOOville are not to be touched when they visit.”

If you’re nervous about experiencing spiders and snakes, prepare for a visit ahead of time by creating a sensory cauldron. Decorate and fill a plastic bucket with spooky stuff like grapes and pretend they’re monster eyes. You could also use googly eyes and pom poms, or include rubbery spiders and snakes in the sensory bucket. Explain they’re not real — it’s just pretend play that you created. Explain they will see different kinds of pretend monster eyes inside the haunted house, they’re just a different way of creating make-believe fun.

“Sensory boxes provide children the opportunity to play while touching, learning and experiencing items that are not familiar, while rediscovering characteristics of things with which they are already familiar,” says Elyse Handel, early childhood education manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “This type of play not only positively impacts children’s brain development, but also supports their fine motor skills, cognitive skills and serves as a calming and soothing activity that can help children self-regulate their emotions and feelings. Think about your child’s needs and personal interests as you create their sensory box.”

You can use materials like sand or rice, or even craft materials like pom poms and felt or tissue paper. Providing children opportunities to play and experience a variety of materials that stimulate different skills is important. Children can search for items within the box/

cauldron, count and sort and create or make up stories about the contents.

Witch Crafts and Other Fun Fare

The witches used their wands to whip up Halloween tips and tricks to help you have a fab-BOO-lous Halloween at home! Discover some of their tricks at childrensmuseum. org/haunted-blog

∙ Sing Halloween songs like, “The Monster Mash,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Thriller.” Uncover the magic with lessons like how black light makes your white clothes look purple. Or, use magnets to move things — magical tricks you can teach at home.

∙ Make freaky food together, like punch in a witch’s cauldron with dry ice. Create Creepy Crawly Jello Cups: Pour different colored Jello into small clear cups and before the mixture hardens, add gummy candy to make the treats look infested with worms and bugs. Bake a cake that looks like a graveyard and let little ones decorate it with things that might scare them and talk about how it’s OK to be afraid and how you can overcome fears.

∙ Create popsicle stick puppets and talk about the characters they’ll see in BOOville. Explain that they’re make-believe just like your popsicle puppets are.

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR BREAST HEALTH

Tips for maintaining good breast health and helping to reduce your risk.

There's an old proverb that remains relevant today: Prevention is better than cure. When it comes to breast health, this couldn’t be more true. Breast cancer prevention — or catching it in the early stages — hinges largely on proactive measures, including breast self-exams, yearly mammograms and an awareness of one’s body.

According to statistics from the National Cancer Institute, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. When breast cancer is detected early (for instance, when it is in the localized stage), the five-year survival rate is almost 100%.

That’s why it’s important to take the time to learn the facts and take charge of your breast health.

Here are just a few of the tools you can use and measures you can take to reduce your risk of breast cancer, and detect any potential problems early on.

BREAST SELF-EXAMS: THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

While many medical procedures require appointments, specialized tools and sometimes even medical insurance, the breast self-exam is relatively easy, personal, simple and free.

This hands-on approach encourages women to become familiar with how their breasts feel. While it might feel funny at first, if you are not used to self-exams, intentionally feeling your breasts is the best way to get to know them. Knowing your breasts well enables you to detect any unusual changes, lumps or abnormalities.

Though breast self-exams are not a substitute for mammograms, they act as a crucial initial step. The Mayo Clinic encourages women to ask their doctors for a demonstration on how best and when best to conduct self-exams. If you detect anything unusual, be safe and contact your doctor.

MAMMOGRAMS: THE PROACTIVE RADIOGRAPH

The mammogram — or an X-ray of the breast — is an essential tool in the breast health toolkit. Yearly mammograms can detect tumors that are too small to be felt and can identify cancers before symptoms develop, making it easier to treat.

Mary Cox, the publisher of Indy’s Child and Southwest Ohio Parent , was one of the lucky ones. Her mammogram revealed a tiny lump — the size of a grain of rice. It was cancerous.

However, in just a few short months, the cancer was removed, and she was given the all-clear. Cox is grateful that she went to her yearly mammogram on time, so that they were able to catch it early.

There's a cloud of myths surrounding mammograms, with fears about radiation exposure or discomfort. But modern mammography uses low radiation doses, and while there might be slight discomfort, it's very brief. The benefits of early detection far outweigh these concerns.

BEYOND SELF-EXAMS AND MAMMOGRAMS

A lesser-known tool — comprehensive breast health awareness — encompasses a wider spectrum than self-exams and mammograms.

Clinical Breast Exams: Performed by healthcare professionals. These exams are a more thorough manual check and can often detect abnormalities missed during self-exams.

Genetic Testing: For those with a strong family history of breast cancer, genetic tests like the BRCA1 and BRCA2 can provide insights into potential inherited risks.

Breast MRI: Generally reserved for those at high risk, this imaging method offers a more detailed picture than mammograms, particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH: LIFESTYLE AND AWARENESS

Examinations and screenings are essential for breast health, but

those shouldn’t be the only tools in your breast-health arsenal.

As part of your preventive care, it helps to make informed lifestyle choices. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, and obesity are some known risk enhancers. On the flip side, eating well, exercising regularly and visiting the doctor yearly are all proactive ways to take care of your health.

A PERSONAL INVESTMENT

Breast health is a deeply personal commitment. Cox explained how traumatic it was to walk into the breast cancer medical office for the very first time. She saw women at every stage of their breast cancer journey. She felt herself break down.

She didn’t want to be there. She didn’t want to be sick. And because Cox was proactive about her breast health, doesn’t have to visit that medical office anymore.

Using these tools to take care of your health is a statement of empowerment. It’s a declaration of power and an embrace of agency over one's own body. Through regular self-exams, mammograms, and a commitment to understanding and advocating for one's health, women everywhere can create a shield against breast cancer.

In this collective effort, every self-exam performed, every mammogram taken, and every story shared adds up to a tapestry of prevention and hope.

The Loneliness of Raising Teens

Parenting teens can feel lonely, but you're NOT alone. Here’s how to cope.

Every season of parenting comes with its unique set of blessings and challenges. There are joys and struggles we experience daily, sometimes simultaneously, as we raise our children.

When our children are young, we are faced with sleepless nights, temper tantrums, naptime, and a seemingly never-ending stream of physical demands that can leave us feeling depleted by the end of the day. We are exhausted in a way we did not know was possible because we are now in a season of life where we don’t seem to have a minute to even go to the bathroom by ourselves.

During this time, we might find online communities, parenting groups, mommy-and-me classes and other support systems to help us with problems as they arise. We type, Help. My child won’t nap, or What do I do if my child doesn’t want to share? on our social feeds and are bombarded with suggestions from helpful friends and strangers.

People with older children look at us walking with our newborn babies, toddlers, preschoolers and even elementary aged children and lovingly say, “This age is exhausting, but parenting teens and older children is exhausting in a different kind of way.”

From my vantage point, parenting teens meant sleep. So, I thought that it had to be well worth whatever challenges those teen years would bring. Like most

everything in life, we don’t really know until we’ve arrived.

My children are ages 11, 13, 15 and 17, and I am living that new kind of exhaustion those well-intentioned people spoke about when I was pushing my toddler on the swing at the playground. This exhaustion is indeed different from the exhaustion I experienced when nursing infants and chasing toddlers. This exhaustion is more of the mental variety, and also has come with something that I wasn’t warned about or prepared for: loneliness.

The loneliness of raising tweens and teens is real, and the more I have talked to friends who are in the same season of life, the more I am coming to find it may be more common, and worthy of conversation, than we may realize.

So what do we do when we find ourselves in that state of loneliness? How exactly do we cope? Here are some things I have found helpful in this stage of life.

Eat the chips and queso. Find a trusted friend or two — one who loves you and your family — and plan a night out to vent and talk about all-things teen related. It doesn’t have to be over chips and queso, but you get the gist. One of the reasons this season is isolating is because we don’t feel we can openly share like we once did. And this is for good reason. I’m not going to go onto my community Facebook page to talk about my teen’s personal struggles like I did when they were being

potty trained. We have entered new terrain and their privacy is important. Not to mention, people can be judgy and people can talk — which is why it’s important to share with the right people. When you’re venting to someone who values you and your family, you know they aren’t going to whisper your secrets to someone else, but they will probably offer you a tissue and a hug if you need it.

Seek professional help when needed.

Raising teens is a whole new ballgame that can come with some heavy topics. Sometimes, we just don’t know what to do or who to turn to. Maybe you're concerned your child is developing an eating disorder, is struggling with depression or anxiety, or has started experimenting with drugs and alcohol. These are hard topics to address and can bring up a lot of questions. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your child’s physician or mental health professionals when you have come to a crossroad you aren’t sure how to navigate. They will have resources available to help and can steer you in the right direction. Also, don’t underestimate the power

of finding someone to talk to yourself. A neutral third party can offer a lot when we are going through hard times.

Remember, you aren’t alone.

This can feel like an isolating time, but the reality is you are not alone. So many have walked this road before you and want to be there to help. They say it takes a village to raise a child for a reason. There are a lot of people rooting for your child, and for you as their caregiver. There are books, articles, podcasts and a wide variety of resources available on topics from professionals and other people who have dealt with similar issues to those you are facing. If you are a person of faith, consider finding a prayer partner. If you have a friend you trust who is in a similar phase of life, have a time when you check in with each other once a week. There are ways to protect the privacy of your child and still build a supportive and trusting community to walk alongside you as you deal with difficult issues that arise.

It feels like a lot, but you’ve got this.

This is the time of life where we can log a lot of hours behind the wheel, on the bleachers and working hard to manage the schedule. Between the physical demands and the emotional needs, it can feel like a lot, but I’m here to say: You’ve got this. One day. One hour. One minute at a time. And when it feels like too much, don’t forget to get out of the house and go feat the chips and queso.

Market Street Catacombs Tour

Between May and October, Indianapolis City Market gives visitors the opportunity to see a site that’s usually hidden from the public view — its catacombs. The tour is a partnership between Indianapolis City Market and Indiana Landmarks, a nonprofit organization that is devoted to helping save and revitalize historic places.

The catacombs beneath the Market have roots back to 1886, which is when the City of Indianapolis and architect Dietrich Bohlen constructed and designed City Market and Tomlinson Hall.

Since the 1800s, City Market has been a thriving downtown Indianapolis hotspot, while Tomlinson Hall disappeared from the Indianapolis cityscape due to a fire in 1958. Today, its basement is a destination for residents and tourists alike, otherwise known as the catacombs, which also features Tomlinson Hall’s notorious arches.

Unlike most catacombs, the remaining basement of Tomlinson Hall does not contain any known bones or crypts; rather, “scores of brick barrel-vaulted arches.”

The catacombs tours are 30 minutes long, and depart from the mezzanine level of Indianapolis City Market, located at 222 E. Market Street. During the catacombs tour, visitors explore the “Roman-looking expanse of brick arches beneath the outdoor Whistler Plaza of City Market.” Additionally, “guides share stories of two historic buildings, City Market and Tomlinson Hall.”

Catacomb tours are suitable for all ages, but strollers are not permitted on the tour. Tickets are $12 per person age 12 and up, $10 per person for Indiana Landmarks members, $6 per person age 6-11, and free for children 5 and under. A limited number of walk-up tickets are available, so purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended.

Creating an Inclusive Halloween for Kids

Halloween can be trickier for children with special needs.

It’s hard to believe it’s already that time of year for fall decorations, bonfires, football games and Halloween preparations. As parents, we hope Halloween night is filled with wonderful memories and way more treats than tricks for all. To help your child experience the fun of the season, it’s good to prepare for any obstacles you may encounter before the costume is put on and the candy bag is in hand.

Here are some tips and tricks (the good kind!) to help create the inclusive Halloween experience for your child you are longing for them to have.

Find the right

costume.

If your child experiences sensory sensitivities, then the itchy witch costume or the costume with the plastic mask may not be a good fit. If your child really wants to go that route, bring them to the store and have them try on the costume to see if any of the fabric or material bothers them. If they are itching or tugging, it probably isn’t going to be on for long on Halloween night. Certain stores, such as Target, have sensory-friendly and adaptive Halloween costumes. All you need to do is type “sensory friendly Halloween costumes” in the search box on the website and see what comes up. Etsy is also another great place to shop for sensory-friendly

costumes, but you want to be sure you plan ahead and get your order in time because this may take a bit longer than your traditional store.

Prepare for sensory disruptions.

There is a whole lot happening on Halloween night. Kids are roaming the streets in costume, decorations are up, adults might be having a bonfire in the cul de sac, music is playing, lights are flashing and more. It’s definitely not your typical night in the neighborhood and this can feel like a lot to a child with sensory sensitivities. To help eliminate some of the disruptions, consider going trick-or-treating as early as possible when it’s still light outside and not as many people are out yet.

If you are in a large neighborhood with a Facebook page, try reaching out to your neighbors to see if they would be willing to host a sensory hour in your neighborhood prior to the traditional trick-or-treat hours. This will allow children who may be overwhelmed by the Halloween experience to trick-or-treat earlier than their peers, without as many disruptions.

Also, weather can vary greatly from one Halloween to the next. Be sure to check before you head out and prepare accordingly for whatever weather is coming your way.

Give candy alternatives.

There might be some foods that aren’t good for your child or other children to consume, such as candy with dyes or candy that contains peanuts or other common allergens. Consider giving alternatives to

those sweet treats. There are plenty of things kids enjoy other than candy, such as individual bags of pretzels or chips, Pirate’s Booty, popcorn balls or even fun trinkets like pencils, tattoos or stickers.

Think about alternatives to trick-or-treating.

There are plenty of places around town that host sensory-friendly fall and Halloween parties and activities. If it feels like Halloween night may be too much, consider one of these alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating. Some kids will be very content to be at home watching trick-or-treaters come to the door with their parents. Have conversations with your child about what to expect that night. SIDE HUSTLES FOR BUSY PARENTS

Raising a child is already a full-time gig. But what can parents do to increase their cash flow while still being present in their young kids’ lives? For many parents in Indianapolis, finding the right side hustle has been the answer. Though certainly not full-time, side hustles aren’t quite part-time either (and are usually done from home), cementing their appeal among our city’s busy moms and dads. Here are some ideas from other Indy parents for creating a side hustle all your own.

Turn Your Creative Outlet into Income

Photographer and business owner, Dena Barrie of Images by Dena, didn’t need a lot of money to start her photography side hustle. “I only needed my camera and my knowledge of photography to get started, and for a side hustle, that’s a fairly low startup cost,” Barrie says. Plus, she was able to book photography sessions around her family’s schedule. “If there was a game on Saturday, I took bookings on Sunday.”

Today, Barrie has turned her side hustle into another extra gig. She helps others create photography. “With my online classes and mentoring programs, I have taught students to take better photos,” she says. “Many of my students have gone on to start successful photography side businesses, use the knowledge they learned to increase their social media presence, and create product photos for their side hustles. Some have sold their works in galleries.”

But Barrie warns that creative work can take a while to develop into a successful side hustle. When she first started hustling, she was new to photography and had to take classes to really hone her skills. “And for many years, I was everything. The tech person, the marketing person, the creative—you name it,” she says.

Nevertheless, keep at it. “I would say the best place to start is at the start! Draft a business plan and register your business. Look into good support networks in your community. Indianapolis has some great small business groups and meetups, as does Central Indiana Women in Business.”

Expand Your Day Job into a Side Hustle

Another way to make extra income is to build on your day job’s skills. Stephanie Ryan, owner of Ryan Education Consulting LLC, writes STEM curriculum materials and assessments for K12 and college students. She also wrote a children’s book, Let’s Learn about Chemistry, as a passion project in 2020. But during the pandemic, typical book tours were out of the question, so instead, she decided to do science demonstrations on Instagram with influencers to market the book.

This led Ryan to document her own path with her son’s pandemic preschooling. And her side hustle, Lets Learn About Science, was born. “It started out as an Instagram account. Then one day, I posted one of the activities to TikTok and it went viral, so that became a platform too,” Ryan says. She also shares Reels on Facebook, generates money through ads and post interactions on other socials, and is sometimes paid to test science education products on her channels.

“Companies will send STEM products to my son and me to test and either share or give feedback. I love helping parents sift through the products out there because not all STEM products are actually good or STEM related,” Ryan says.

According to Ryan, if parents have something unique to offer the world and the time to learn how to create videos and follow trends, they could make some money on social media. “But it truly does take a lot of time,” she cautions. “I wasn’t trying to do it and in fact, it was making nothing until one day a video went viral and I was surprised to see the large number that month.”

But the work is fun, and it gives Ryan opportunities to work from home and create something with her son. “My advice for a side hustle is to not do it out of desperation but as a fun side passion project,” she says. “That way, when it takes a lot of work one month and doesn’t yield quite as much, it was still a blast to do.”

Local Spotlight: Ballet INitiative

them a short dance lesson,” says Voreis, describing their story time events. They are also open to visiting schools, daycares and community centers.

In addition to their community programs, Ballet INitiative puts on several performances a year. “We hope that our audiences see and understand how putting in hard work can lead to something beautiful, and we hope the children in our audiences are inspired by this,” Voreis says.They recently wrapped Starry Nights, a retelling of fairy tales and myths told underneath the night sky.

Beyond a preschooler’s dance class, ballet can be inaccessible and stuffy. It’s a dance style steeped in tradition and rules, structure and decorum. Ballet INitiative is spinning away from that mindset and breathing new life into dance with their project-based dance collective.

Founded in 2020 by local professional dancers, the nonprofit group is seeking to modernize ballet to reflect the current social climate and public interests, by giving the dancers and artists more input into their art.

“We felt there was a need for a collective where our voices could be heard and we could all work together as an inclusive group to bring innovative, inspiring and inclusive dance performances to all within the community and beyond,” says executive director and co-founder Christina Voreis.

With a focus on innovation, inclusion and inspiration, Ballet INitiative is breaking the mold in Indianapolis. The company has envisioned updated versions of classic performances — like with their feminist 1920s Nutcracker — and is passionate about making ballet accessible to all, regardless of income or class, and building partnerships with local artists and organizations in Indy to broaden the artistic reach in our city.

Over the past three years, Ballet INitiative has launched several community programs aimed at making dance accessible and fun. They offer story time events, mini performances and master classes. As a nonprofit, this is one way they give back to the community. “Our dancers travel to various branches of the Indianapolis Public Library, as well as libraries in the surrounding areas, to read a dance book to the children and teach

The dance company will soon be casting for Nutcracker with a Twist, to be performed later this year. This hallmark ballet sets the classical Nutcracker story against the backdrop of Duke Ellington’s jazzy suite of Nutcracker music. “Our show incorporates all styles of dance, from classical ballet, to contemporary, hip-hop and even tap. You’ll enjoy tapping soldiers,

whirling snowflakes and the Sugar Plum Fairy, along with Charlestons, flappers and, of course, jazz!” Voreis says. You can see Nutcracker with a Twist December 15-17, 2023, at The Basile Theatre at the historic Athenaeum in downtown Indianapolis.

Ballet INitiative isn’t just connecting with and inspiring children. The company has an ethos to nurture its performers, as well, whether they are balancing multiple jobs or multiple kids. The company prides itself on the fact that the performances always come together in the end, despite working around busy schedules, and even babies and children in the studio. Their support and flexibility make it possible for performers to stay engaged in ballet when otherwise hectic lives may have made that impossible. While they currently focus on adult performers, Ballet INitiative welcomes children to audition for Nutcracker with a Twist and are looking for more opportunities to include youth performers.

From music to movement, swimming to art, and so much more — there are lots of enrichment programs available for preschoolers. There are so many options that it can be hard to know where to begin. The good news is that at this age, you can’t really go wrong. Give something a try, and if it’s not a good fit, that’s OK. Pick another one and try again!

This is a unique time of exploration and development in your child’s life that can have lifelong benefits. Take a swimming program, for example. Not only will your child have fun splashing in the water (hopefully), but they will also learn a potentially life-saving skill that they can enjoy for years to come.

There are also exceptional music programs available for children in this age group, such as Kindermusik. In many music classes, your child will sing, be introduced to different instruments, and also have an opportunity to move their body. If your

child enjoys art, look into programs at art studios around town.

Many preschoolers will begin taking dance lessons or gymnastics, and discover a passion that they carry with them for years — possibly into high school or beyond. And let’s not forget the onetime classes that are often offered at libraries, museums, and parks departments, such as story time, nature walks, themed craft experiences, educational opportunities and more.

SEARCHING FOR A PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

With nap times, schedules, work and life in general to consider, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start searching for a preschool enrichment program. As you begin your search, some things to consider are time, location, convenience, cost and what you are hoping your child will gain from this program.

You will want a program that works with your child’s schedule as well as the rest of your family’s schedule. A good way to start to narrow down your search is to know what time slot you are looking for and how far away the program is from home.

Another thing to consider is the duration and cost of the program. Some programs, like those offered at the library, may be one-time with no fee, while a swim class may be more of a lengthy, and expensive, commitment.

If teaching your child to swim is a goal right now, that may supersede some of the other activities. Or if your focus is to get your child to try something new and socialize with peers, then a group class focused on movement and play might be more of what you are looking for. Remember, you can always mix and match, too.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENRICHMENT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

A child’s brain develops quickly. By age 3, the average child’s brain has reached about 75% of its adult weight, and by age 5, that goes up to 90%. Children take in the world around them and are at a unique time in life when they can learn a great deal. This is one of the many reasons enrichment programs are so beneficial for children this age — not only are they fun, but they are introducing kids to skills they can use for life.

The great thing about enrichment programs at this age is that you can try a lot of different things and start to see what your child might be drawn to. The time commitment for preschool programs usually is not too long. And if you are unsure about where to start or if the program will be a good fit, many places offer a trial class so you can see if your preschooler has interest before commiting to the entire class. Enrichment programs are also a great way for your child to begin to learn how to follow directions from other adults, and learn what it’s like to be in a classroom type setting before venturing off to preschool or kindergarten.

This is an exciting time in your child’s life and there are so many options to explore. Overall, enrichment programs offer your child a chance to try something new, socialize with peers, learn more about what their interests may be, and develop skills that they will carry with them for years to come.
