WonderTree Farm My son and I visited WonderTree Farm in Zionsville on a recent “Saturday Farm Day.” We had heard a lot of buzz about this farm, and we were excited to visit. At the gate, we paid $10 to park, but then were given a $10 ticket to spend in their market. After parking, we walked through the market on the way to the farm. The market is chock-full of baked goods, tantalizing sweets and grass-fed meat. There are chickens, kittens and even a dog running around the market. This was thrilling for my son. In the market, there is also an animal food station. The food costs $1 per cup. If you are visiting the farm on a Saturday with children, you must buy the food. The animals are why you come here.

WonderTree Farm was fairly busy with many children of all ages. Strollers are very easily managed at the farm. The kids were all smiles. The animals were peaceful and receptive to the children. My son and I stayed at the farm for about an hour. We enjoyed the horses and the kittens the most. If your child loves animals, you have to visit this farm on a Saturday.

2280 S US 421 Zionsville wondertreefarm.com

When we exited the market, we were able to enter a gated area where we could interact with donkeys, horses and goats. I had never been in an interactive farm like this — it was so open and accessible.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER WORDS BY LINDSAY CONNER

M

any factors can influence your breast cancer risk. And although you can’t change genetics, you can help lower your risk of breast cancer by taking care of your health. Here’s what you need to know to help your family be proactive about your breast health.

Make Dietary Changes You’ve probably heard, “You are what you eat.” We all know that line and it also rings true for breast cancer prevention, says Erica Giblin, MD, medical director of breast care services at Ascension St. Vincent.

LOWER YOUR LIKELIHOOD OF BRE AST C ANCER BY TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR HE ALTH N O W.

For a tip that’s easy to remember, eat the rainbow! “A diet low in fat and full of colorful, whole fruits and vegetables is the best primary cancer prevention,” says Lauren M. Harry, MD, IU Health radiologist specializing in breast radiology. Focusing on plant-based sources of protein including beans and legumes is a great way to lower your risk for breast cancer, as well as other cancers and heart disease — the leading cause of death for women in the United States. “As a bonus, it’s affordable and great for the environment.” Additionally, experts say to limit alcohol intake — or avoid it altogether — and to stop smoking for your overall health, but also to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.

Lower Body Fat “General lifestyle changes are much more important in preventing breast cancer than most people know,” Giblin says. “A diet low in processed foods and sugar, as well as regular exercise, have been associated with a 20% to 25% reduction in hormone positive breast cancer risk.” The Mediterranean diet, which focuses on lean proteins and vegetables, is associated with a decreased cancer risk.

24

INDYSCHILD.COM I October 2021

Maintaining a healthy body weight and staying physically active is another important step to stave off breast and other cancers. This includes decreasing body fat content. “Fat makes estrogen, and we know that 80% of breast cancers feed on estrogen,” Giblin says. Lower body fat content leads to less estrogen running through the body, decreasing a person’s risk of developing breast cancer. “Both aerobic exercise, such as biking or walking, and strength exercises help decrease body fat content.”

Making daily physical activity a priority will help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Adults should get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate or 75 to 100 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week. Experts recommend you add muscle strengthening at least two days a week, as well as balance training activities. Doing these activities as a family can help your kids also learn healthy habits that they can carry into adulthood!

Consider Vitamins Research suggests that low vitamin D levels are associated with increased breast cancer risk. “Taking vitamin D supplements can help maintain healthy levels,” Giblin says. She also warns against hormone replacement therapy, for anti-aging or other purposes, which can actually increase breast cancer

risk. “There are things available other than hormones that can be used successfully to maintain good strong bones and heart health,” she says. “Women should only take hormone replacement therapy if they have symptoms that are not alleviated with other medicines.”

Early Detection Conduct regular self breast exams a week after menstruation — this is when the breast tissue is at its best time for a reliable exam. The American College of Radiology and the Society for Breast Imaging recommend annual screening mammography beginning at age 40. “Women should get screening mammograms yearly, as long as they remain in good health,” Harry says.

Tomosynthesis, or 3-D mammography, is widely available and helps radiologists to detect subtle cancers, leading to early diagnosis and treatment. “Additionally, tomosynthesis allows breast imaging specialists to call back fewer women for additional imaging after screening mammography,” Harry adds. Multiple studies have shown that getting both a yearly mammogram and yearly MRI significantly increase the detection of breast cancer.

High-risk individuals may have a strong family history of breast cancer; genetic counseling and testing can help you learn more about your body and find out if you carry a breast cancer gene. Additionally, if you have ever had a breast biopsy that had 'atypia' (abnormal cells), you are considered high risk. If you are

formally screened and are identified as high-risk, insurance should pay for annual breast MRI in addition to mammography. Experts recommend having a formal risk assessment and discussing options for risk modification: lifestyle changes, chemoprophylaxis and possibly surgery.

Finally, make sure the men in your life are aware that they, too, can develop breast cancer; approximately 1% of breast cancer diagnoses in the U.S. are in men. If any person feels or sees a change in breast shape or size, in the axilla (underarm area), notices nipple discharge, or just feels that something isn’t right, they should talk to their doctor.

The options for preschool enrichment classes are endless: dance, music, art, nature, sports… the list goes on. So, where should you start? With so many options, how do you know what will be the best fit for your child, and your family as a whole? Here’s the good news. With so many wonderful enrichment options in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas, there are lots of places that would be a great fit. What it boils down to is: What are you looking for in an enrichment program? What are your priorities and needs? Hopefully after you are able to figure those out, the rest will fall into place. To help get you started on your journey to picking a quality enrichment program, here are some things to be on the lookout for.

Child Interest If your child gravitates toward a particular activity — like exploring nature, creating art or playing sports — then a good place to start is with their area of interest. Many times, though, preschoolers aren’t sure what they like! The great thing about preschool enrichment classes is that there are lots of different programs available that your child can explore. They’ll get a chance to grow and discover something new.

Age-appropriate Learning Preschoolers learn best when they’re playing. For preschoolers, playtime isn’t just a time to be silly and have fun with peers, playtime is actually incredibly important for learning. Find a program with reasonable expectations for preschoolers, with classes where the learning is fun and playful.

Experienced Staff The staff should be highly experienced in the topic that they are teaching, and also have a love for working with young children. They should also have realistic expectations of skills for preschool-aged children. A good way to see the staff in action is to observe a class. Ask to

Staff-to-Child Ratio Different programs will have varying rules on class size. Some may offer more students with an instructor and helper, and others might have smaller classes with just one instructor. Find out the child to staff ratio when looking into programs, and keep in mind whether your child would do better in a class with fewer children.

Recommendations from Others What is the enrichment program’s reputation in the community? Do other people recommend it? Word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family can be great resources for possible programs to investigate, especially if you don’t know where to start. It might take a few sessions before you know whether you’ve found a good match between your preschooler and the enrichment program. But if your preschooler seems engaged in what they’re doing, wants to go back and is learning new skills, chances are you have found a good fit.

Counseling for Parents and Children When things start to feel off with your family, you want to fix it, but for many people, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what is wrong. Counseling for your child, or you as a parent, can help pinpoint your struggles and offer several long-term benefits to your family. Some of these include: • Stress management: Counseling can help give your children the words and understanding to handle life’s stressors in a healthy way. Being able to understand and verbalize how you feel is a skill that will transcend throughout a child’s entire life. • Building a support system: Counseling can help both parents and children identify their safe spaces and people in life. Having these places and people in life offer you the opportunity to have a trusting environment where you can safely and comfortably express and explore your feelings.

• A sense of resilience for your family: Learning new skills and ways of coping with stress can change your life. The skills and perspectives you gain in counseling can shape the way that you parent, approach your career, and so engage with every other aspect of your life. When considering therapy for you or your child, be sure to set realistic expectations. A counselor is not going to “fix” you. They are there to help you and your child progress and process emotions in a healthy way.

If you think your child could benefit from counseling, or if you as a parent are struggling to control and handle your own emotions, visit crosswindscounseling.org or call 877-594-9204 to get matched with a therapist today. Crosswinds counselors have helped thousands of families build deeper connections and find restoration. We can help you too.

PARENTING

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Teens and Cyberbullying It wasn’t long ago that bullying was relegated to face-to-face interaction. This meant that, if a child was safe at home, the bully would either have to call the house phone or come to the door and get through the family. Good luck with that.

Now, cyberbullying can take place at any time, anywhere, and the victim and the bully can reside miles apart. With email, social media, texts and more, the options seem endless, and the possibility of being bullied greater than ever before.

Parents need to be aware of cyberbullying, to help prevent their children from being bullied or becoming the bully. Jake Brosius, director of youth programming with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and Shawn Bush, director of student services with MSD Lawrence Township, answers some questions on this important topic.

How can parents recognize cyberbullying? Brosius: The signs of being cyberbullied are very similar to signs of in-person bullying. Children become more easily agitated or demonstrate symptoms of depression. Look for significant changes in behavior, such as a child who is normally talkative becoming suddenly silent, or a child who is normally very active

28

INDYSCHILD.COM I October 2021

not wanting to leave their room. While these signs may not point specifically to cyberbullying, they can be good indications of increased stress.

What can parents do to help prevent cyberbullying? Bush: Monitor your child’s social media use as best you can. You wouldn’t allow your child in a physical room full of strangers without your supervision. Don’t do it online, either! Teach your child to advocate for themselves in everyday situations. Hopefully, those skills at speaking up will translate to the online environment, as well.

Also, try role play. Try some what-if scenarios, and plan what to do, or say, if your child experiences cyberbullying. Let your child

know to seek help from a trusted adult if anything scary, uncomfortable or upsetting happens online, as things can spiral out of control very quickly in the virtual world.

What else should parents keep in mind? Brosius: Parents often feel overwhelmed by social media, or by the idea of their children being online. That is perfectly understandable. However, it is not effective to deal with that feeling by attempting to ban your child from being online. Children may feel isolated from their friends or find more secretive ways to engage with the online world. Instead, make the effort to learn about the social media companies in which your child expresses interest. Being informed can better prepare a parent to explain what are good

boundaries and practices, and why certain activities may or may not be allowed. If you treat the online world as a chance to learn, they will better appreciate your decisions.

Bush: Social media has created a whole new platform for bullying behavior to occur. If someone makes a single mean comment in person, that could potentially be the end of it. But with social media, that comment can be liked, commented on, and shared over and over again. So what would have been one mean comment can turn into something else very quickly. There’s an illusion of anonymity with screen talk that makes people more apt to do, or say, things online that they would never do, or say, face to face. So we must be vigilant and mindful of how our kids engage with others via social media. It’s a whole new world today.

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE

Local Spotlight: DAThouse

Engaging the Bates-Hendricks community with creative neighborhood initiatives. DAThouse is on a mission to engage the Bates-Hendricks community of Indianapolis. Founded in 2007, the non-profit organization is doing that by finding solutions to the needs of the community, and offering them in innovative ways.

The Lincoln Center Located on the corner of East Street and Lincoln Street, the Lincoln Center serves as the headquarters of DAThouse. What was once the site of an old strip club has been transformed into a place for community gatherings and events. Inside the Lincoln Center, visitors find a warm and welcoming place to meet up with neighbors, grab a cup of coffee, play pool, read a book, do laundry, and just gather in a central place in the community.

Lincoln Lane Coffee Co. The coffee shop that’s located inside the Lincoln Center is open to everyone — you don’t need to live in the neighborhood to visit. Lincoln Lane Coffee Co. sells drip coffee roasted by Indianapolis’ own Calvin Fletcher Coffee Company and Tinker Coffee Company, and offers pastries and baked goods by local Scholars Inn Bakehouse. Lincoln Lane also crafts their own syrups that they use to make custom coffee drinks. One of the great things about this coffee shop is that you can get a cup of black coffee for $1!

DATLaundry and The Loft Coworking Space In the Lincoln Center, visitors will also find a three washer, four dryer laundry facility. And upstairs, The Loft Coworking Space offers a quiet place to work. The Loft operates on a membership basis, and comes with perks like free printing and a discount at the coffee shop downstairs.

DATKids From the beginning, working with kids has been a central goal of DAThouse. The DATKids program began when neighborhood kids would show up outside of DAThouse. Volunteers would help the children with homework, play with them and feed them. Over time, a more structured after-school program emerged, and eventually became what DATKids is today.

Now, DATKids partners with the neighborhood school, James A. Garfield IPS #31, to provide after-school care for students in grades K-6. The program is free to all families and focuses on teaching life skills to students through mentoring, sports and the arts. The program is available when school is in session. During the summer, DATKids has a summer program for students in kindergarten through 4th grade, which runs two days a week.

parents who want to homeschool their children but don’t know where to start. Created to be an independent homeschool co-op, the DATKids Academy is held mostly outdoors for students in grades K-3.

SPECIAL NEEDS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Understanding Dyslexia Signs to look out for, and when to get help.

Dyslexia is more common and more complex than people might think, and the signs can be different for each kid. Bill Herman, CEO of the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana (Dii), answers some questions that might help parents to know what to look for, and why you should seek early assessment and intervention to result in the best outcome for your child.

What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is defined as an unexpected difficulty in learning to read, impacting about 1 in 5 people so it's quite common! Dyslexia takes away an individual’s ability to read quickly and automatically, and to retrieve spoken words easily, but it does not dampen their creativity and ingenuity.

What are the signs of dyslexia? Though this not an exhaustive list, common signs of dyslexia include: confusion of similar looking letters (such a b/d, m/w, f/t), difficulty with sequencing (such as days of the

36

INDYSCHILD.COM I October 2021

week), confusion with similar sounding words (celery/salary), spelling difficulties, appearing to be guessing when reading out loud (such as skipping, adding, changing words), family history of difficulties with reading and spelling, and anxiety at school over reading out loud, test taking and getting work completed.

What should parents do if they believe their child might have dyslexia? If a parent believes their child is dyslexic, they may want to consider having them tested for dyslexia and consider intervention. The typical intervention is tutoring. Testing can be helpful if you'd like to address accommodations or academic plans at school. However, we know that testing and tutoring are both investments that can be

financially challenging. Due to this, at Dii, for example, we don't require a diagnosis to tutor with us. We believe all struggling readers can benefit from multisensory Orton-Gillingham tutoring. While it is good to be able to put a name to the challenge you're seeing, we believe it's most important to ensure you have the tools to address that challenge.

Does early intervention help? Early intervention helps tremendously. Though we do believe that starting late is better than never, the earlier you can get intervention for your child, the more you'll be setting them up for success. Since dyslexia is lifelong, the sooner they can learn the tools and skills needed to become fluent,

capable readers, the better. Literacy is a cornerstone of all other learning, and we need that solid foundation to move forward.

If you feel that your child may exhibit symptoms of dyslexia, know you are not alone. Dyslexia is common and, thankfully, there are many tools available that will help your child learn to not only manage their dyslexia, but also to thrive. Getting a diagnosis is the first step toward intervention and hopefully will help to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning.
