Back on Track For a long time, I prided myself on keeping my two sons on a regular sleep schedule. No matter if they were in school or on summer break, their bedtime was 7:30 p.m.

I’m sure it’s going to take a while to get back into a consistent “school mode,” and I’m sure I’ll hear a lot of protests (“But mom, Robbie and Caden are still playing outside!”), so wish me luck.

This summer was a little different. “Mom, can I stay up just a little longer?” This was heard often at my house, especially by my oldest son.

Getting back into school mode is what we’re working on right now. If you’re right there too, then check out our Ultimate Back-toSchool Checklist on page 18 for 10 ideas for preparing your child (and you!) for the big day back to school. Summer was fun and went by in a f lash, and the first day of school will be here before we know it!

So this summer, I’ve loosened up on enforcing such a strict bedtime. My kids are getting older, and living in the Midwest means summer nights stay light out for a loooong time. These past couple of months, bedtime has been leaning closer to 8 p.m., and some nights, for my oldest son, it means 9 p.m. or later. But school is just around the corner. And although a 9 p.m. bedtime might work for some families during the school year, it just doesn’t for my kids. So that means soon, we’re going back to our regular bedtime of 7:30 p.m.

through the Indiana State Fair There’s so much to love about the Indiana State Fair, but let’s face it, fair food takes the cake. This year, fair organizers have outdone themselves with wacky food and beverage concoctions ranging from pickle-topped pizza to a corn dog smothered in mac ‘n cheese. For a real crowd pleaser, grab a plate of State Fair Charcuterie, a fun twist with the traditional meats and cheeses swapped out with mini funnel cakes, mini corn dogs, saltwater taffy, cotton candy, caramel corn and popcorn topped with a sprinkle of colored candies. Hidden Paradise Campground About an hour away from downtown Indianapolis lies Hidden Paradise Campground, a familyfriendly place to experience the area’s natural beauty. Visitors will find quarry

swimming on the spring-fed “Dream Lake” — a 20-foot-deep lake amid high limestone cliffs. It offers a designated swimming area with all the inflatable fun: a floating trampoline, obstacle course, jumping platform and slide. Hidden Paradise also offers a large dock and open swimming areas. No cliff jumping is allowed — which is welcome news for many parents. Paddle boats are available to rent by the hour, which take you around the intimate lake. Life vests are required for everyone. Guests can bring their own, but they also offer them for free as a part of the admission price. Guests can also enjoy Flat Rock River along the northside of the grounds. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent, but you are also welcome to bring your own — including tubes. On a recent visit, we enjoyed the shallow waters for creek stomping and talked to many regulars about how much they enjoy river fishing.

There are day passes available, along with dog-friendly overnight camping. The family-owned 80-acre campground offers 168 wooded sites (for RV and tent camping) with water and electricity. For those less adventurous, the campground also has six cabin rentals. For camping, the sites are off the street and are away from road noise, and they offer beautiful sites directly on the Flat Rock river. Most of the campers stay in RVs, but for tent campers without walls as sound barriers, be prepared for unregulated sites (e.g. multiple tents/cars at a site, golf carts, late night noise, etc). There’s always a lot of activity at Hidden Paradise, and many of the sites are reserved by full-timers. The grounds play host to a variety of activities, including live music, karaoke, chili cook-offs, fishing derbies, campsite decorating contests and more. The facilities include a well-stocked camp store, bathrooms and showers (though limited for the amount of campsites), snack shack, playground and picnic area. Have patience, as it’s a very popular destination and the workers are typically doing the jobs of many. 802 E. Jefferson St., Saint Paul, IN hiddenparadisecampground.com

You can find her sharing her knowledge of art and space, galaxies, billions of stars and their solar systems during one of the free, hands-on art workshops.

Art is a great way for little ones to express their creativity and learn about the world around them.

Dinosaurs Paleo art combines science and art to literally paint a picture of how the creatures lived. The artwork helps spark our own imagination and curiosity so we gain a deeper understanding of what day-to-day life may have been like for them.

Comic Book Fun “Comics are the perfect gateway for children to engage with science,” says Coco Fox, paleo-cartoonist. “By using humor and storytelling, science comics can introduce new concepts in an accessible and engaging way. Once kids see these comics, the first thing they want to do is write their own stories using our dinosaurs as the main characters! Making science fun is the first step to making science important. Creating comics is a great way for these children to share their passion for dinosaurs and science long after they leave the museum.”

Indy Parks Unveils Willard Park Skatepark Willard Park is known for being a welcoming place for children, adults, and families. It’s also a popular space for people to swim, play basketball and tennis, walk, and explore. And now Willard Park is known for a beautiful skatepark. In July, Indy Parks unveiled the Willard Park Skatepark, which is located at 1901 Washington Street and is the first skatepark to be built in Indianapolis in more than 20 years. The 13,000 square foot skatepark features granite blocks from the old City County Building plaza and artistic concrete forms to create jumps, grinding, and trick skating opportunities. During construction, skatepark designer Hunger Skate Parks implemented several moments of art to acknowledge Willard Park and skateboarders who were killed before the skatepark opened.

In tribute to the park’s history as the first site for the School for the Deaf, the skatepark spells out Indianapolis in sign language on a metal ground tail. Artist and skater Kyle Stuffy is memorialized on a quarter pipe with an acid-stained little tree freshener pattern. An open book skating feature honors the life of skater and scholar Ethan Williams, who served as a Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council member and was killed in New York in 2020. Skating advocates and Indy Parks are committed to using the Willard Park Skatepark as an example for future park development efforts. Park visitors are encouraged to discover Indy Parks’ 213 parks, 153 miles of trails, and more than 11,000 acres. The Power of Dance

Studio360° Dance Presented by Wright's offers fun and imaginative dance classes for children. Looking for a well-rounded opportunity for your little dancer? Studio360° Dance offers classes for kids of all ages in the styles of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, hip hop and tap. Studio360° also provides supplementary classes for team gymnasts. This recreational dance program is focused on the fundamentals of dance, and was created to develop grace, poise, fluidity, coordination and technical skills. Using the Once Upon a Ballet curriculum, little dancers at Studio360° Dance explore imaginative story-based activities while learning their dance lessons. This encourages creativity through movement and establishes an overall exciting experience! “We want to make dance for little ones as fun and imaginative as possible,” says Lauren Lofgren at Wright’s. “Children are naturally amazing learners, but only when we let kids be kids and guide them through play. When we make exploring new concepts in dance class exciting, our children's hearts and minds will grow and f lourish.” Dance is a wonderful sport on its own and an incredible asset as a supplementary sport! Check out the top three reasons why supplementing dance with gymnastics is a good idea.

between power tumbling is important. Practiced dance can help with that through muscle memory and regulated breathing throughout the routine. A win-win!

Dance develops grace through poise.

Dance increases body awareness. Gymnasts are already known for their body awareness, but with the inclusion of dance, it’s taken to a whole new level. Gymnastics ensures strength and power to perform awe-inspiring skills, which takes many hours of conditioning and repetition to perfect. The addition of flexibility and small bits of dance are included, but not focused on, which can leave gymnasts lacking. Dance can make up for that with a specific focus on position and poise.

Dance teaches musicality. Dance training naturally incorporates musicality training. Because dance classes are conducted with music and dance

While gymnastics is considered more of a sport rather than an art, gymnasts are still required to express artistry in two out of the four apparatuses: beam and f loor. Their technique in skills must be balanced by their performance quality to elicit grace and poise. The culmination of strength and clean lines is required for top marks. With the inclusion of dance into their repertoire, gymnasts can understand the tiny details that pack the most punch, from elegant, elongated fingers to the often elusive pointed toe.

routines are performed to music, a gymnast who studies dance will easily begin to better understand counts and rhythms. For example, a f loor routine encompasses music, tumbling, jumps, turns and dance choreography. With a 90-second time limit, time to breathe in

10 wa ys to prepar e y ou r c h i ld ( an d y o u ! ) for the big day b ac k to s c h ool.

Getting your kids ready to go back to school isn’t just about buying new clothes and school supplies. (Although that’s a big part of it!) Here are some practical tips to brush up on in the months, weeks and days leading into the first day of school.

Get Pumped About School After a summer of fun and relaxation, it might be difficult for some kids to make the mental transition back to the school grind. In the weeks leading up to the first day, start talking about the fun activities and opportunities your child will have being in a new grade with a new teacher in a new classroom.

Brush Up on Learning Provide learning opportunities by encouraging reading, problemsolving and building new skills over the summer.

Aim for Adequate Shut-Eye A couple of weeks before school starts, re-establish a school-year bedtime routine, and make sure your child goes to bed at a time that will give them the recommended amount of sleep. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that kids ages 3 to 5 years get 10 to 13 hours of sleep, kids ages 6 to 12 years get 9 to 12 hours of sleep, and kids ages 13 to 18 years get 8 to 10 hours of sleep.

Go Shopping Prioritize Health and Wellness Ensure your child is in good physical and mental health by scheduling doctor and dental appointments well before school starts. If your child needs a sports physical in order to participate in sports during the school year, get that done over the summer, too.

18

INDYSCHILD.COM I August 2022

If your school has a supply shopping list, use it to go shopping with your child, either in-person at a store or online. Letting your child pick out their own supplies (within reason) sometimes adds to the excitement of going back to school.

Return to a Routine Knowing what to expect — and what is expected from them — on a daily basis will help most kids get back into the school routine faster. For visual learners, it might help to have a family calendar posted in a place where everyone can see it, with important dates and schedules listed.

Practice School Behaviors This is especially important for young students — and your child’s teacher will appreciate it, too! Go over basic school behaviors, such as raising your hand to get your teacher’s attention, taking turns, following the teacher’s instructions, waiting quietly in line, being polite to classmates, working quietly and independently, and other behaviors that your child might need to know in the classroom.

Celebrate the End of Summer The night before school starts, have a little celebration to say so-long to summer. This can look like a special day-before-school-starts dinner, or ice cream or a fun treat for dessert, or one last pool party or run through the sprinklers.

Reach Out to Teachers After the school year has begun, contact your child's teachers, and let them know you want to be involved in helping your student learn and grow. Teachers appreciate an active caregiver who is invested in making the school year the best it can be!

Set Yourself Up for Positivity Children are good at picking up on our moods. If you are feeling anxious or worried about your child going back to school, it can make your child feel anxious and worried, too. As much as you can, model optimism and confidence about the new school year.

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

Here’s how to decide which kind of preschool would be a good fit for your preschooler. HINKING OF WHERE TO SEND YOUR CHILD TO PRESCHOOL MAY MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN, AND IT’S NO WONDER. THERE ARE A LOT OF GREAT OPTIONS, AND IT CAN BE OVERWHELMING TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE BEST FIT WILL BE — NOT ONLY FOR YOUR CHILD, BUT ALSO FOR YOUR FAMILY AS A WHOLE.

To make your decision a little easier, we’ve compiled a list of five things to consider that will hopefully help you get one step closer to finding the best preschool for your child.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION It might sound obvious, but when you pick a preschool, you want to be sure the location is a good fit for your family. If you are dropping off or picking up on the way to work, is the preschool on the way? Do you want your child to develop relationships with classmates outside of school? If you choose a location close to home, it may be easier to plan

20

INDYSCHILD.COM I August 2022

playdates or activities. You will be spending a lot of time dropping off and picking up, and you want to make sure the location is practical for your family.

CONSIDER THE SCHEDULE Will your child be eating lunch at school? Is there a naptime built in? How does the schedule work with the needs of other family members? Programs like Parents Day Out will typically have more hours to ensure parents can get a little break during the day. Some have shorter hours, but meet daily. For kids just starting school who have not been in daycare prior, it might work well to start with a program that only meets a couple days a week. If your child needs a nap, but doesn’t nap well outside of home, you might want to consider programs with shorter days so that naptime is still prioritized.

MEET YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING NEEDS The great thing about preschool is that it is typically play-based learning. Young kids learn as they play and interact with other children. Some schools will be more student-led, like Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio Emilia schools. Others will be more structured with learning centers and blocks of time carved out for different activities. Also, consider the child-to-teacher ratio. If your child is easily overwhelmed or overstimulated, you might want to go with a school that has fewer children per class.

CONSIDER THE COST Schools can vary greatly in cost depending on the number of hours a week your child will be in school, as well as the type of education being offered. You definitely don’t want a school that will break the bank, so make sure the monthly tuition is a good fit. Many schools also offer some form of scholarship for eligible students.

THINK OF YOUR NEEDS, TOO If you want to be involved in your child’s learning, schools like cooperative preschools are spectacular for parents who want to be really hands-on with their child’s education. According to Parent Cooperative Preschools International, “A parent cooperative preschool is

organized by a group of families with similar philosophies who hire a trained teacher to provide their children with a quality preschool experience. The preschool is administered and maintained by the parents. The parents assist the professional teachers in the classroom on a rotating basis and participate in the educational program of all the children. Each family shares in the business operation of the school (usually a nonprofit venture), thus making it truly a cooperative venture. Parents, preschool children and their teachers all go to school together and learn together.”

Other schools have room moms and preschool boards that parents can get involved with, as well as helping with seasonal parties. Be sure to ask what the expectations for parents are and make sure it matches up with what you are wanting.

THE BOTTOM LINE As you are looking into schools, take tours and ask questions. Make a list of your family’s needs and priorities. Talk to neighbors and friends, and find out about their preschool experiences. You can also learn about the schools and their communities through social media. The good news is that there are a lot of fantastic preschool options available. With some time and research, you will find the best preschool for your child.

It’s a fun place with play areas for children up to age 12 with a space for parents to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. The large play space has two areas: one for infants up to age 5 with a small area for crawlers, and another area designated for ages 6 to 12. The play areas feature fun toys and hands-on activities.

There's no reason why a play date should only be fun for the children involved! These are just a few examples of places where kids and their caregivers can have a great time, but there are many more spots around town where there's fun to be had for all ages.

TEENS & TWEENS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

The Back-to-School Transition How to support your teen as they head back to school.

Find a good place in the house, that is free from distractions, for them to work. Consider putting up a family calendar so they know what is going on not only in their lives, but with the family as well, so that they can better prepare themselves for their work ahead.

It’s hard to believe that school is almost in session and that the long stretch of summer days are about to come to an end. If your teen has been sleeping until the afternoon and staying up all night, you might be wondering how in the world they’ll be ready to get up and get going in just a few days — along with other things. Here are some tips for supporting them not only with their sleep schedule, but also emotional support, getting back into the school routine, organization and more as they transition into the school year.

Provide Emotional Support When our kids are younger, the physical demands are challenging. When they grow, the needs shift from the physical to the emotional, which comes with its own set of challenges.

A great way to support your teen emotionally is to be available. When your teen is ready to talk — talk. It may not be the most convenient time, but you won’t regret taking the time to engage in the conversation.

Also, ask questions. Ask your teen how they are feeling about the school year. What fears are they experiencing? What are they

Also, talk about the amount of time they will need to get ready for school and consider time savers, like picking out your clothes the day before and having your backpack packed up and ready to go.

excited about? If they are nervous, discuss specific scenarios with them. If they are attending a new school, find out when the orientation will be and if they need some extra time walking the halls. If so, contact the principal to schedule a special time for them to tour the building.

In a time when anxiety is on the rise with teens, be aware of your child’s needs and know there is emotional support available in the form of counseling services. It’s great to normalize mental health, just like we normalize physical health — especially for our teens.

Get Back Into the School Routine It’s recommended that teens receive 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Some teens will do better trying to acclimate to the school schedule a week or two before

break is over. For those kids, they may want to start to wake up earlier, and try to get to bed earlier to prepare for what’s around the corner.

Some kids won’t need this preparation and will just naturally adjust once the school schedule kicks in. There isn’t a right or a wrong way. Just do what is best for your child.

Brush Up on School Skills In the weeks leading up to school, challenge your teen to read a book and talk to you about what they’ve read. Have them work on a personal budget that includes any money they may need to make, or save, for the upcoming year. Talk about the classes they have signed up for and what they hope to learn in those classes. Once school starts, they will have plenty of work to do and will hopefully find that it all comes back to them pretty quickly.

Get Organized Heading back to school means it’s time to get organized. Make sure your teen has all of the supplies they need for their classes. Help them to come up with a good after-school routine that takes their extracurriculars, work schedule and other commitments in mind.

Whether your teen is lamenting the end of summer, or gearing up for the year ahead, with these tips hopefully you will find both you and your teen are ready for the challenges, and excitement, that comes with the start of the school year.

What are Mochi Donuts? Mochi donuts are a cross between cake donuts and mochi, the Japanese rice cakes made from glutinous, sweet rice f lour. This special f lour gives the mochi doughnuts a chewy, light and airy texture. The doughnuts are shaped into rings made up of eight segments that look like little mochi balls strung together. Mochi donuts gained popularity first in Hawaiian and Japanese cultures, but they are now enjoyed by many around the world!

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY MICHELLE MASTRO

Local Spotlight: Watch Us Farm

This nonprofit wants to shift the way we think about children with special needs. Executive director of Watch Us Farm, Janice M. Agarwal, has worked as a pediatric physical therapist, helping the families of special needs children for many years. While working abroad, she traveled to England and Germany, and found educational models that prepared children with special needs for vocational training.

This is where Watch Us Farm comes in. A pilot program, the nonprofit currently operates on a small farm in Zionsville that sells produce locally. The nonprofit employs adults with autism, brain injury, and intellectual impairment in a secure and nurturing environment. It helps to teach the skills that will give those adults with special needs the chance to have a career and more independence after high school.

“The concern in these countries was much the same as we see here,” Agarwal says. “After a child with special needs grows up, what are they going to do? Will they have jobs and housing? And so, the vocational training models there address these questions and concerns by offering an education that prepares those with special needs for certain jobs.”

“We need to stop categorizing people and think about the person instead,” Agarwal says. “For people with special needs, we can individualize jobs to fit what they can do. Maybe they can do five hours a day or three hours a day. We can fit the role to best serve the person. And as the person gets to know that job, they can do more and more, but you have to start small and let their world get bigger.”

On the other hand, here in the U.S., Agarwal says that families with special needs children are fighting just to get their children to finish school. “In many ways, public education fails to offer the skills that will enable special needs adults to succeed at jobs they excel at,” she says. Agarwal explains that people with special needs have gifts that make them valuable contributors, and they want to work and support themselves. “But they may need some help. As a community, we can come together to create an environment that can help them succeed.”

INDYSCHILD.COM I August 2022

When Agarwal had her son who has special needs, she knew she had to make a difference to change the way education in America prepares special-needs children for future employment. “I didn’t want my son just to get through school,” Agarwal says. “I wanted him to have a job, and I wanted him to have housing. Just as importantly, I wanted him to retain the friendships he made in school. It can be a very lonely existence after graduating from high school and losing the friends he got to see every day.” Changing the way educational models think about people with special needs has been the hardest job she has ever had, says Agarwal. “It’s the hardest fight I have ever had to fight, but for many special

For many families, the kids just hang out at the house. And there’s no system in place helping the kids become more self-sufficient or have their own housing,” she says.

WORDS BY CROSSWINDS COUNSELING STAFF

Frequently Asked Questions About Child Therapy It’s often hard to know what is going on in our children’s minds. Or maybe they’re acting out suddenly, or self-isolating. Talking with a counselor may be the best option for your child to help them work through their struggles. We’re here to answer a few commonly asked questions about child therapy.

1. How do I know if my child needs to see a therapist? One of the most common signs is behavioral issues. If your child is acting out of the ordinary, or their behavior has become extremely deviant, destructive, or worrisome, consider seeing a counselor.

2. If I take my child to therapy does that mean I have done a bad job at parenting?

3. How do I talk to my child about therapy? A good way to approach this conversation is to talk about it like a normal doctor’s appointment. Let your child know that therapy can help them feel better over time and that you want what is best for them. If your child is uncomfortable with their counselor, let them know it’s okay to switch counselors. Counseling can help your child process their emotions and thoughts in a healthy way and empower them to open up which can improve your communication and relationship with them. Scan the QR Code to schedule an appointment for your child. Crosswinds counselors have helped thousands of families build deeper connections and find restoration. We can help you too.

No. Therapy is a safe space for your child to focus on themselves. Introducing your child to that environment is a wonderful thing you can do as a parent. We know parenting is difficult, and we all need help from time to time. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent, it just means you’re human.

Skills on Wheels

This program at Riley Hospital for Children helps kids maneuver various life situations in their wheelchairs. If you have a child in a manual wheelchair, you may have wondered how they will learn the skills needed to help them successfully maneuver through a variety of situations they may encounter. For those of you located in Indianapolis and surrounding areas, we have some good news. Riley Hospital for Children offers an evidence-based training program delivered by trained occupational therapists called Skills on Wheels, which helps children to learn these very skills.

Skills on Wheels was launched in the spring of 2021 by the IU Department of Occupational Therapy and Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. Adapted from a wheelchair skills training program for adults developed by R. Lee Kirby at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Skills on Wheels is the first wheelchair skills program offered for children in the United States — and only the second worldwide.

Tony Chase, developer of Skills on Wheels and assistant professor at IUPUI’s School of Health & Human Sciences, answered some of our questions about this enriching and supportive program.

SKILLS ON WHEELS

Can you tell us a bit about Skills on Wheels and how it began? Skills on Wheels involves teaching essential wheelchair skills to wheelchair-using children. The program runs five Saturdays each spring. Last year was our pilot run of it with four participants. This year, the program has expanded to 17 participants and has various collaborative implementations of it in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as well as Canada and Ireland.

What kinds of skills do you teach? We teach basic skills, like rolling forward, backward or taking apart your chair. We then have some intermediate skills, like wheelies and navigating difficult terrain.

Then there are higher-level skills, such as navigating street curbs or stairs. There are 33 skills in total.

Who would be a good fit for your program? We serve children between 8 and 17 years of age who are manual wheelchair users regardless of diagnosis. Children go through an evaluation appointment at Riley Hospital to determine if the program is a good fit.

What else should we know about Skills on Wheels? This program also involves experiences for occupational therapy and physical therapy students at IUPUI. In addition, there is a space called “caregivers corner” in which parents of

participants can learn information from speakers and build rapport through discussion with each other. One of the Saturdays is a community day where we all go to the canal area of downtown and practice skills in a real-world environment. Skills on Wheels helps children immensely by providing them with the skills they need to move around freely, with confidence in their ability to navigate different situations and terrains they may encounter. It also helps parents to know their children are being taught these important skills by trained professionals who care for their child’s independence, safety and wellbeing. Programs like this are life-changing for both the child and their caregiver, as they interact with others in similar life situations, gaining not only skills, but also support.
