A Magical Summer

We’re only halfway through the summer, and I already consider it a success. This is because, after many years of resisting it, my youngest son has finally learned to ride a bike.

For years, he said he wasn’t interested in learning to ride. Then, he said it would take too long to learn. But my son is going into the third grade this fall, and I told him that it was time. “But MrBeast doesn’t know how to ride a bike, and he’s a millionaire!” my son said about the YouTube content creator.

Touche.

But riding a bike is fun, I told my son. And once you learn to ride a bike, we can all go on bike rides as a family, I said. And also? You’re just learning to ride a bike, I said.

So one Monday this summer, I went out with my son for a no-pressure lesson. He hopped on his bike and practiced balancing. On Tuesday, he put one foot on a pedal and

pushed off with the other foot. By Wednesday, like magic, he put both feet on the pedals and started riding. If you’ve ever helped a kid learn how to ride a bike, it really does feel like magic when you see it click in their brain.

No matter what else happens this summer, that little bit of magic — and my son’s big smile — will be the thing I remember about this season. I hope you’re having some magical moments this summer, too!

new mom challenges

Here are some common difficulties that new parents encounter — and how to deal with them.

Becoming a parent changes you. Once you have your baby in your arms, you are no longer just your name. You are now a parent.

In 2022, The New York Times asked readers for their best advice to new moms. Published on Mother’s Day, the article featured some of the 3,000 responses they received from readers, including:

“Let it go.”

“Maintain perspective.”

“Pick your battles.”

A woman in Pakistan said, “There’s an Urdu saying in our culture: Suno sab ki, karo apni. It means, ‘Hear everyone, but do what you want.’”

With that in mind, here is some curated advice. Hear it, but do what is best for you and your family.

Take Care of Your Health

You have just been through an incredibly taxing physical experience. In fact, you're still going through it. You have more on your plate than ever before, and looking after yourself can feel like another item on a very long

checklist. It is very important to prioritize your health — for your baby, your family and you.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a wonderful resource for new moms on their website (cdc.gov/hearher/ pregnant-postpartum-women/ index.html), which features a list of urgent medical concerns for postpartum women, and a guide to help you start the conversation with your doctor in order to get the help you need.

Besides physical concerns, the resource also hits upon mental health concerns. According to the Mayo Clinic, most moms experience what is commonly referred to as the “baby blues” two to three days after delivery. It looks like mood-swings, anxiety, crying spells and difficulty sleeping. This might last between two to three weeks.

Indiana University Health provides new moms with free in-person and online postpartum support groups. Visit their classes and events page (iuhealth.org/ classes-events) for a detailed schedule.

If the “baby blues” are more severe or last longer than three weeks, it is important to talk to your doctor. If you are experienc -

ing suicidal thoughts, you should get help immediately. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988lifeline.org/talkto-someone-now). It is open and ready to help 24-hours a day.

Accept Support

This is hard for some of us. You were not meant to take care of yourself and your baby alone.

In China, the concept of the 40day period of rest, “zuo yuezi,” or after delivery, has been around for more than 2,000 years. The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother by Heng Ou, Amely Greeven and Marisa Belger, is an engaging how-to manual for resting and restoration that explores the traditions of “zou yuezi.”

Another resource is the MOMS Helpline, offered through the Indiana Department of Health. This free support system for new and expecting moms can be accessed at momshelplineindiana.com or by calling 1-844-624-MOMS Parents can have a confidential conversation with an experienced professional who can help with everything from breastfeeding to bill assistance.

Rest, Rest, Rest

Remember taking a nap whenever you wanted? Or sleeping in on the weekends? Those days will return, but you have a few years to get through first. I promise there will soon be a day when you are dragging your 13-year-old child out of bed so that he doesn’t miss the bus.

In the meantime, a newborn’s sleep schedule is fairly erratic. This means that your sleep schedule is also fairly erratic. So, it might help to keep these things in mind:

Sleep when the baby sleeps. Divide and conquer with your partner.

Improve your sleep hygiene. Meditate every day. Exercise every day.

Becoming a new parent can be an overwhelming experience filled with challenges. It's important to remember that every parent's journey is unique and there is no one-sizefits-all solution. By seeking support from family, friends and professionals, and by taking care of yourself both physically and mentally, you can navigate the challenges of parenthood and enjoy the joys that come with it.

A Roaring ‘20s-themed Date Night

Celebrate some of Indy’s best history, art and culture at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

Despite its name, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is not just for children. It is also for those young at heart. Grownups who want to get dressed up and enjoy a night out without the kids can dance with the dinos and learn about the science of beer all while paying it forward.

Slip back in time 100 years to the Roaring ‘20s and the Golden Age of Hollywood — full of glamour and glitter at Museum by Moonlight, The Children’s Museum biggest single-night fundraiser. The themed event takes place during a time in which guys wore pinstripe suits with sporty hats, such as a fedora or round bowler. “Dolls,” as they were called back then, donned loose-fitting flapper dresses that made it easier to swing to up-tempo jazz. The beads and fringe created quite the visual.

“This isn't just another night on the town or date night,” says Rico Francis, co-chair of Museum by Moonlight. “Your support at this event allows us to continue keeping The Children's Museum accessible to every child and family. Now that's something to celebrate.”

The FUNdraiser supports:

∙ The museum’s nearly 100-year legacy so that it lives on for the next generation of explorers and dreamers

∙ Helps hold down the cost of general admission

∙ Provides reduced and free admission to underserved families

∙ Funds programming, interpretation and live theater productions

“The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has seen generations of people around the world grow and learn through exhibits, events and programs,” says Meggie Dials, co-chair of Museum by Moonlight.

“Whether you are a parent, guardian or caregiver, we hope you’ve witnessed the true museum magic in your children’s eyes. Now you, too, can experience that same child-like wonder as a grown up.”

On August 26, guests ages 21 and older will enjoy an elegant evening from 7 p.m. until the infamous water clock strikes midnight. With two levels of tickets available, all guests receive access to exclusive spaces and activities, as well as a tax acknowledgement letter. A VIP ticket provides early access to the festivities, including a silent auction, premium tastings, delicious food catered by some of the city’s best restaurants and much more.

"Museum by Moonlight aids in ensuring the museum’s legacy of creating larger-than-life learning opportunities live on for the next generation,” says Amy Kwas, vice president of development. “Museum staff have worked closely with an external committee of changemakers and creatives in the city to make this a memorable experience.”

Those who are 21+ and looking for a more casual night on the town will enjoy “After-Dark” events at the museum throughout the year. In October, the museum will host a Halloween After-Dark event, in which guests will brave their way through The Children’s Museum Guild’s 59th Annual Haunted House and participate in other activities just for grownups.

Embracing the opportunity to visit the Children's Museum can reignite the sense of wonder and joy that is often left behind in childhood. Visit childrensmuseum.org/afterhours-adults to discover more about other adult-only events.

One man’s trash is … a teenager’s small business! At least that is what The Lawnmower Project’s Gary Szymczak had in mind when he fixed up his first lawnmower a few years ago. Inspiration hit when he realized just how many people throw away perfectly good lawnmowers instead of fixing them, and he knew he could turn that junk into an entrepreneurial opportunity for young Hoosiers. Through a little grass cutting, there is a lot of personal growth.

The Lawnmower Project gifts refurbished lawnmowers to local teens and young adults to aid them in starting their own lawncare business. In addition, they match the student ambassadors with a mentor and provide guidance on starting, marketing and managing their businesses. All of the profits are for the student ambassadors. The only catch? In exchange, they must provide pro-bono lawncare services to an elderly or in-need member of their local community. Many of the teens explained they are using their business proceeds to fund the purchase of a car or college.

Local Spotlight: The Lawnmower Project

Student ambassadors go through an orientation process where they are taught how to properly mow a lawn, maintain their equipment, and talk to their customers about grass. Then they have regular communication with their mentors throughout the mowing season. Szymczak says he’s in constant contact with the student ambassadors, putting in more than 40 volunteer hours a week on the program.

“Maintaining this is a lot of time, but honestly it is a great time,” Szymczak says.

In their first year, The Lawnmower Project launched six small businesses and began 2023 with 10 student ambassadors. Szymczak explained they have had varying levels of success, which is part of the educational experience for some of the kids. They may not realize the time commitment or work involved with running a business and opt not to continue the program. Of the initial class of student ambassadors, one returned to the program this year and she has hired other teens to work under her, ultimately expanding her business.

Some of the other student ambassadors were able to parlay their work with the Lawnmower Project into other jobs, which also thrills Szymczak. “They’re going to be able to take these skills and transfer them to whatever they do,” he explained. “It feels great to see that.”

In addition to the entrepreneurial side, the Lawn Mower Project has a year-round internship program where students can receive training on how to repair mowers and get paid to help repair mowers at Broad Ripple Mower Repair.

Szymczak goes to Indianapolis area schools to connect with students who want to apply to join The Lawnmower Project. If you know of a teen or young adult for The Lawn Mower Project, the next class of student ambassadors will be selected in early spring 2024. The Lawnmower Project needs financial contributions, volunteers, and connections with area high schools to reach more students. They are not currently accepting lawnmower donations. To get involved, follow them on Facebook or at thelawnmowerproject.org .

Summer Fun

Without the Sun

Don’t

Summer is here, and with it comes soaring temps. Of course, you want to get outside and enjoy the hot weather and sunshine while it lasts. But when the heat becomes too much to handle, don't sweat it! There are plenty of indoor activities in Indianapolis that are sure to keep you and your family entertained.

Make Your Way to a Museum

The obvious choice when you’re looking for a cool indoor place to visit? A museum! We are fortunate to have lots of great museums in the Indianapolis area. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the ultimate destination for families; check out Dinosaur Train: The Traveling Exhibition before it leaves the museum on July 30. The Eiteljorg Museum’s Nina Mason Pulliam Education Center on the lower level includes opportunities for young children to play, discover and create. While you’re in the White River State Park area, be sure to visit the Indiana State Museum, especially on July 22 during their all-day Family Discovery Day, where families can learn about space through hands-on activities. Also in the area is the NCAA Hall of Champions, where you can learn about college basketball and the 23 other college sports sanctioned by the NCAA.

It’s All About Art

The Indianapolis Art Center has lots of classes and camps for kids looking for a creative way to spend the summer. Kids can unleash their creativity with classes ranging from drawing and painting to woodworking and photography. Garfield Park Art Center is a great place to find classes and art exhibits, as well. (Bonus: The nearby Garfield Park Conservatory is a cool indoor oasis to explore and be surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers.)

Nurture a Love for Nature

Your local library is a great place to hang out during the summer! Find your nearest branch and attend one of the many free events and activities they offer. There’s something happening nearly every day at all Indianapolis Public Library branches, including a Teddy Bear Concert with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on July 16 at the Central Library. You’ll find a rich selection of books, games, puzzles and creative-play toys at Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, an independent bookstore that also offers in-store events. Find your next read while dining and playing a board game at Books & Brews, with locations in Indianapolis and Brownsburg.

Speaking of board games: They are the perfect activity to do indoors. Fortunately, there are lots of places to play around Indy. Doughnuts & Dragons is a family-friendly doughnut shop and board game shop on the Northside. Pop in and play a game from their collection, or bring your own to play with friends. You’ll also find delicious gourmet donuts, like Key Lime and Butterbeer. Step inside Greenfield’s Hitherto Coffee & Gaming Parlour, and you’ll enter a relaxing and engaging hybrid cafe where you can play games, as well purchase games from their retail selection. Family Time Games offer a large selection of board games, cards and gaming supplies, and they also regularly hold events in the store, plus offer lots of space to hang out and play.

Profile On: Today’s Champion

Local nonprofit Today’s Champions is making a difference for the autism community with their programs that benefit people with autism. The organization was founded in honor of a close friendship between renowned race car driver, Bryal Clauson, and the founder of the organization's son, Ben William Hodgin. Their friendship began in December 2011 through a mutual love of sports and continued until Bryan died tragically in a racing accident on August 7, 2016.

Because of Bryan’s friendship and the way he treated Ben like a true friend and peer, he was able to challenge him to do things nobody else was able to challenge him to do. He embodied all that the word “champion” means. Since the day he passed away, Ben’s family has been committed to honoring his legacy of treating all people with dignity and respect.

Bryan started the event Racers for Autism years ago at the Chilli Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the hopes of spreading awareness about autism in his racing community. To honor his memory and further his legacy, Today’s Champions wanted to continue this important event. In 2019, they successfully held their first Racers for Autism event in Tulsa and have continued this event in Indiana since 2021. This year, the event will be held on September 26 at Daredevil Brewing Company in Indianapolis.

According to Beth Hodgin, executive director of Today’s Champions, “The funds raised at the Annual BC's Racers for Autism event go to our backpack program and first responder initiatives. The majority of our efforts support the Indiana autism community.”

Another initiative that is making a big impact in the community is called BW’s Backpack Program. This program provides sensory backpacks that include sunglasses, noise canceling headphones, a stress ball and fidget spinner. The items de-escalate mood and soothe the senses, so that stimulating events can be enjoyed with less stress for individuals with autism.

Every person should be able to have fun, and these backpacks help their recipients to relax and do just that.

“To date, we have supplied over 400 backpacks to various Indiana Pacer games, the Indiana State Museum, the Autism Society of Indiana's SOAR program with Delta airlines, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and various Indiana schools,” Hodgin says. “We partner with the Autism Society of Indiana (ASI) and will supply backpacks at all major events.”

Today’s Champions also provides First Responder Autism Training with the goal of specific autism training to first responders, security personnel, teachers and other influential members of the community. This training will help the first responders to better understand how these situations can be confusing, hard to process and difficult to understand for people with autism — especially when parents, family or friends are not around to make sense of, or help de-escalate, a potentially confusing situation.

“In 2023, we are again partnering with ASI, supporting all opportunities to train first responders, and provide continual awareness to these communities,” Hodgin says.

Organizations like Today’s Champions are making an important and lasting impact on our community as they advocate for those with disabilities. For more information on the organization and how you can get involved, check out their website at todayschampions.org

Should You Change Schools?

THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT SWITCHING YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL.

Changing schools is a big decision, and one that should be carefully considered. Families change schools for a variety of reasons: They might be looking for a different educational environment for their child, or they might have had a shift in their family circumstances, or they just might not be satisfied with their current school. Whatever the reason might be, when it’s time to go, you will know. Here are some important things to consider if you’re thinking about switching schools.

BEFORE MAKING A CHANGE

If you’re thinking about switching schools because your child doesn’t like the school or is having problems there, try to give the school a chance to address these issues first. Sometimes, meeting with a principal or head of school might open your eyes to options, resources and supportive staff that could help solve the problems you’re having.

It might help to also ask yourself these questions:

If we switch schools, is my child missing an opportunity to learn how to work through a difficult situation?

Are there things about our current school that my child likes? Will we be able to find these qualities at our new school?

Have we sought out all of the resources that are available to us at our current school?

What kind of commitment or lifestyle change will switching schools require?

How will this decision affect the rest of our family?

FINDING A NEW SCHOOL

If you do decide to change schools, then the next step is to find a school that will meet your family’s needs. Here are some things you can do to help with your search for a new school.

Think about what your child needs in a school. Are they academically advanced and need a school that will challenge them, or do they need academic support? Or maybe they’re somewhere in between? It’s also important to consider other factors, like whether your child needs more one-on-one time with a teacher (if so, consider class sizes), or if they need more time to get their wiggles out every day (if so, consider how much play time the school allocates).

Think about your family’s needs. Take into account your family’s budget. What can you afford? How far away is the school, and will it require shuffling around schedules? What kind of time commitment or lifestyle changes will this new school require?

Do your research. There are a plethora of school options available, including public, private, Montessori, Waldorf, co-op, charter, magnet, home school and more. There’s truly a school for every type of learner. Research the different types of schools in your community and get opinions from parents you trust.

Visit the school. If possible, visit the schools you are interested in with your child. Bring a list of questions you might have. Many schools offer tours that will allow you to visit classrooms and get a quick peek at what you might expect during the school day.

When considering a new school, take your child’s opinions into account. After all, they will be the one attending the school! That said,

don’t leave the final decision to your child. Ultimately, that decision is up to you, after you’ve carefully weighed the pros and cons of each school you are evaluating.

MAKING THE SCHOOL SWITCH A WIN-WIN

You’ve made your choice and you’re making the big switch. Changing schools can bring up all kinds of emotions from a child, both positive and negative. Here are some tips to make the transition a little easier.

Focus on the positives. Remind your child of all the new experiences they will have and new friends they’ll make.

Talk it out. Keep the lines of communication open in your family. Remind them that change is hard and it’s OK to be sad to leave their old school.

Visit their classroom and meet the teacher. If your school allows it, make an appointment to tour the school and meet the teacher before school starts.

Make new friends, but keep the old. Help your child maintain their friendships from their old school. Arrange playdates for younger kids, and encourage older kids to invite their friends over to hang out, or to text, call or email each other.

Dual Language Programming in the MSD of Lawrence Township

The MSD of Lawrence Township has been home to nationally recognized K-12 Dual Language programming for over 35 years. The elementary programs are housed at Forest Glen Elementary, Skiles Test Elementary and Sunnyside Elementary. After grade six, students from these three schools move on to Fall Creek Valley Middle School and then Lawrence North High School to continue their immersion experience. Beginning in 2023, programming will be moving to Belzer Middle School and ultimately to Lawrence Central High School, providing comprehensive immersion programming at all secondary buildings. Upon graduation, students graduate with an Indiana Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency and an International Diploma recognized by the Ministry of Spain.

“Students in high-quality dual language programs like those offered in Lawrence Township learn a second language in a student-centered environment that emphasizes literacy and the integration of humanities and Hispanic literature,” says Mr. Jerome Lahlou, Forest Glen Elementary principal.

At the elementary level, two-way immersion students in Kindergarten through grade two receive 80% of their instruction in Spanish and 20% in English. In grade three, the model of

instruction is the same, but the language allocation plan changes to 70% Spanish and 30% English, preparing students for required state assessments. In grades four, five and six, the language allocation changes to 50% Spanish and 50% English. Teachers are fully proficient in the language they use for instruction, and in nearly all situations, are native speakers of that language.

Assistant Director of Language Programs, Ms. Georgina MayorgaSchneider, has a personal commitment to developing bi-literacy. Beyond her professional role, she grew up in a bilingual home. “While my parents are both bilingual, they believed that English was the only way to be successful and only spoke to us in English,” Schneider says. “Now as the Assistant Director of Language

Programs, I am able to advocate for and support programs that develop student bilingualism and give them a chance to see their identity as valuable, that they never feel as if one language should dominate another or that one defines success. I see students being brave and bold in their pursuit of becoming bilingual and it is fulfilling and inspiring on a personal and professional level."

In 2018, due to program popularity, dual immersion was expanded to Skiles Test Elementary. Unique to this school, Skiles Test blends Spanish immersion with existing robotics, coding, and environmental science programs.

At all elementary buildings, students participate in foundational programs introducing computer science and hands-on innovation.

Students are given the opportunity to further deepen their STEM experiences with participation in extracurricular clubs, including VEX Robotics, available in every building with the support of the Lawrence Township School Foundation.

In late 2022, given continued program demand, the decision was made to further expand two-way dual language programming to Sunnyside Elementary. Families now have even more choice when selecting a two-way dual language program for their child. One-way dual language continues to be available to native Spanish speaking students learning English at three elementary buildings.

Students in dual language programs should be able to see the similarities and differences in each other, but rather than identifying the differences as obstacles, they should be viewed as opportunities to connect.

The Dual Language program in the MSD of Lawrence Township follows Indiana Academic Standards and is nationally recognized for its high levels of academic achievement. It is the longest standing and only K-12 dual language model in the state.

Learn more about the dual language offerings at MSD Lawrence schools by visiting ltschools.org/academics/ dual-language , or calling 317-4238200 .

Consider Online Public School at Virtual Prep Academy of Indiana

Virtual Prep Academy of Indiana at Madison-Grant is a statewide online public school delivering a world-class education to students in nearly every county in Indiana. They serve students in grades K-12 and take pride in building strong connections between students and Learning Coaches. They believe that while they are experts in their field, you are the expert on your child. VPrep endeavors to partner with parents to provide an educational experience that is second to none.

Student Support

All students are supported by highly trained teachers and a Student Success Coach and Mentor teacher. The Student Success Coach program means that each student has a Success Coach that helps them navigate their academic responsibilities. They also are a resource to help keep parents informed so that the student has

the support they need for success. This team is ready to stay connected to students and families to build relationships, and to facilitate making connections with other students, as well.

Socialization Opportunities

Some parents might worry that their student might miss out on socialization and extracurricular activities in an online environment. At VPrep, community is a focus and an integral part of student success. Students are encouraged to forge friendships, participate in external activities and really be a part of the VPrep family.

Tailored Curriculum

Today, an online education is a choice that parents can make. Perhaps because it provides more accessibility or maybe because it works better for their student and their family. The curriculum at VPrep is designed and delivered through state-of-the-art systems, personalized for each child while staying true to the standards required by our state. All students in grades K-6 also go through small group instruction tailored to fill in

any learning gaps they might have or move them even further ahead if they are ready. Students can attend live instruction daily. Can’t make class or want to review it? Classes are recorded to be available on demand.

Practical Skill-Building

For high school students, VPrep offers a variety of options designed to prepare students for life after high school. Students may choose to explore Career and Technical Education options (CTE) such as networking, IT or digital design. CTE curriculum encourages students to apply logic, to collaboratively work through projects, and learn practical skills that will be applicable in life as well as their future career. Some students choose to obtain their workforce professional certifications in things such as Microsoft, Python or Adobe, making them ready for a job right out of high school.

Some students at VPrep Indiana at M-G choose to work towards their associate degree and begin earning college credit. VPrep partners with Ivy Tech Community college and offers courses that fulfill the Indiana College Core. If completed, students can graduate with not just their high school diploma, but also their associate degree! All credits are earned free of charge. If a student chooses to continue into a four-year college program in the state of Indiana, these credits transfer and will launch them well on their way to success.
