Always My Baby My kids are not babies any-more. I know that’s a fact, but I sometimes forget. (Honestly, doesn’t every mom think of their children as their babies?) But lately, that fact has been driven home every time my family and I visit a restaurant that has a kids’ menu.

ing his case for staying a kid, despite the kids’ menu telling him the contrary.

Because, you see, most kids' menus have tiny words printed somewhere on them that say something like: “For kids ages 10 and under.”

My kids aren’t babies anymore, but maybe yours are. In that case, you came to the right place. Our issue this month is packed full of wisdom and advice for life with a baby — from choosing a great pediatrician on page 36 to fun spots to check out around town with your baby on page 34. And that’s just the beginning!

My oldest child is 10 years old. He turns 11 in less than a month. Recently, when we were at a restaurant and pointed out that he wouldn’t be able to order from the kids’ menu any longer after his birthday, he looked a little panic stricken. He didn’t like that a piece of his childhood wouldn’t be available to him any longer. He asked if this meant he wouldn’t be a “kid” anymore. “But I’ll still look 10 for a while,” he said. “And I still like to do things that kids do.” Then he listed the ways that he would still be a kid when he was 11. He was mak-

We reassured him that yes, he’d still be a kid at 11. He still had many years of being a kid ahead of him. And after our meal, we went to a playground, and our 10 year old (almost 11 year old) played like the kid he is.

If you’re in the baby stage of parenthood: savor this time. One day, you, too, will be ordering off the adult menu for your not-so-little kid!

You’ll need sustenance during that epic Ticket to Ride game. The café is run by chef/owner and hospitality and specialty coffee industry veteran Kevin Kerkhof. Hitherto offers French press, drip and pour overs, a traditional espresso-based drink menu including all the classics, plus housemade syrups. Kids enjoy frappes and smoothies: cotton candy, orange dreamsicle, frozen hot chocolate, horchata and more. For food, regulars enjoy savory and sweet hand pies, galettes, croissants, danishes, and soft serve. Though the menu rotates, the sausage gravy hand pie, bourbon chocolate bombe, lemon sorbetto, and Greek yogurt swirl are crowd favorites.

Merging the owner’s hobbies and loves, Hitherto offers games to play and/or purchase — more than 700 of them — featuring the best new and classic tabletop hobby board games. The focus of their curation is a wide selection of gateway classics, top ranked and award-winning, plus the hottest new releases and some hard to find titles, promos, and Kickstarterfunded games. Guests can check out any of the games to play at their table, and the staff is on hand to suggest a game or give quick tutorials. Hitherto regularly hosts free “Learn to Play” events. Hitherto’s tables are open to play on a first come basis without charge. AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY BY KIMBERLY HARMS ROBINSON, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Let Kids Help Lead the Way in Their Own Learning The Reaction Contraption lets children and their grown-ups control balls traveling on a variety of tracks. In the process, little ones discover properties of motion and what causes balls to move slower or faster.

Children are naturally curious and inquisitive. They want to explore their world and environments, and make discoveries. Educators say it is important for caregivers to promote and foster this from a young age so they continue to grow feeling confident and capable in their skills.

“I would encourage caregivers to really listen, watch, and engage with their child when playing,” says Elyse Handel, early childhood educator, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “I know it sounds simple, but the more caregivers can understand their child’s interests, skills and where they are developmentally, they can then discern how to provide opportunities for support and further exploration.”

Handel says support those interests first and avoid putting unneeded pressure on little ones by pushing for more advanced concepts. She gives the example of when children are beginning to recognize and identify letters, try not to immediately teach them letter sounds the next day. Let them lead the way by practicing their skill in a variety of ways to feel successful. If they can identify letters on their favorite puzzle board, then introduce a “letter hunt.”

touch and feel different textures, they investigate materials, ask questions, and begin to make connections. As children get older and are able use oral language, they use new vocabulary to describe textures (like soft, smooth, fluffy, rough, bumpy, scratchy) and verbally express those connections, thoughts and ideas. Walk around the grocery store and look for those same letters another day. Or, you could read a book and encourage them to find those same letters. After they feel successful and conquered that skill; then, introduce that letter sound or try writing that letter.

Another important step in a child’s development is learning about various textures. Exploring different textures will further develop their inquiry-based learning skills. When children

Playscape at The Children’s Museum is designed for little learners (birth to 5 years old). The art and music studios encourage children to create, using a variety of art materials and real musical instruments. Remember, the process of creating is more important than the final product.

Water and sand tables introduce little tots to basic science concepts as they experiment by splashing, pouring and measuring. This type of play helps children learn to make decisions, solve problems and control parts of their environment. Little ones can also use rotating turntables to make patterns and designs in the sand to develop their artistic side. Babyscape allows infants and toddlers ages two and younger to explore using their senses. They roll balls, turn on light switches, and look in mirrors. Kids can even explore cause and effect with the Push and Woosh and Flutter Fly experiences. Play dates in Playscape are fun for littles and their bigs.

LITTLE FOODIES

Big Hoffa's Smokehouse Bar-BQue and Freezery Tangy, sweet flavors shine at Big Hoffa's, and so does the atmosphere. The 16,000 square-foot restaurant in Westfield gives off an airy, fun, pirate-themed vibe for tasty barbecue and ice cream under one roof. There’s low-key comfort in the tavern-style wooden tables, f lickering antiquestyle lights, juxtaposed against vibrant paper lanterns and Caribbean-hued murals detailed with ocean waves, skeletons and pirate ships. Big Hoffa's is locally owned and operated, and draws long crowds for both lunch and dinner. It’s so beloved by its regulars, in fact, that most of the pirate-themed decorations have been donated by customers. Enjoy hefty portions of imaginative and classic creations, such as the Buccaneer, the restaurant’s f lagship sandwich, which comes with over a half pound of pork topped with coleslaw, fries and ranch dressing on a garlic butter bun.

The top-selling “Hoffinator” consists of loaded fries topped with 29 different ingredients. There are also family-sized meals, and a “Little Hoffa” menu for youngsters that includes mini sandwiches, mac and cheese, ribs and applesauce. Big Hoffa’s Freezery commissions Glover’s Ice Cream in Frankfort to private label ice cream for vintage shakes, hand-dipped cones and cups, and f loats. But the real star of the menu includes their eight towering Insane Shakes. These sharable 20-ounce cups of ice cream include toppings like cotton candy, Ding-Dongs, Twinkies and sprinkles. Tears of a Mermaid comes with a base of kryptonite ice cream, topped with cotton candy and rainbow lollipops. Some of those extreme shakes measure up to two feet tall! 800 E. Is It Time to Switch Schools? W hat to consider if you’ re think ing of changing your child’s scho ol .

WORDS BY NICOLE SIPE

16

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

Switching schools is a big decision, and one that should be carefully considered. Families change schools for a variety of reasons — they might be looking for a different educational environment for their child, or they might have had a shift in their family circumstances, or they just might not be satisfied with their current school. Whatever the reason might be, when it’s time to go, you will know. Here are some important things to consider if you’re thinking about switching schools.

What to Think About Before Making the Big Change If you’re thinking about switching schools because your child doesn’t like the school or is having problems there, try to give the school a chance to address these issues first. Sometimes, meeting with a principal or head of school might open your eyes to options, resources and supportive staff that could help solve the problems you’re having. It might help to also ask yourself these questions: · If we switch schools, is my child missing an opportunity to learn how to work through a difficult situation? · Are there things about our current school that my child likes? Will we be able to find these qualities at our new school?

· Have we sought out all of the resources that are available to us at our current school? · What kind of commitment or lifestyle change will switching schools require? · How will this decision affect the rest of our family?

Finding a New School That Fits If you do decide to change schools, then the next step is to find a school that will meet your family’s needs. Here are some actionable items you can do to help with your search for a new school.

Think about what your child needs in a school. Are they academically advanced and need a school that will challenge them, or do they need academic support? Or maybe they’re somewhere in between? It’s also important to consider other factors, like whether your child needs more one-on-one time with a teacher (if so, consider class sizes), or if they need more time to get their wiggles out every day (if so, consider how much play time the school allocates).

Think about your family’s needs. Take into account your family’s budget. What can you afford? How far away is the school, and will it require shuffling around schedules? What kind of time commitment or lifestyle changes will this new school require?

Do your research. There are a plethora of school options available, including public, private, Montessori, Waldorf, co-op, charter, magnet, home school and more. There’s truly a school for every type of learner. Research the different types of schools in your community and get opinions from parents you trust.

Making the School Switch a Positive Experience You’ve made your choice and you’re making the big switch. Changing schools can elicit all kinds of emotions from a child, both positive and negative. Here are some tips to make the transition a little easier.

Visit the school. If possible, visit the schools you are interested in with your child. Bring a list of questions you might have. Many schools offer tours that will allow you to visit classrooms and get a quick peek at what you might expect during the school day.

When considering a new school, take your child’s opinions into account. After all, they will be the one attending the school! That said, don’t leave the final decision to your child. Ultimately, that decision is up to you, after you’ve carefully weighed the pros and cons of each school you are evaluating.

Focus on the positives. Remind your child of all the new experiences they will have and new friends they’ll make.

Talk it out. Keep the lines of communication open in your family. Remind them that change is hard and it’s OK to be sad to leave their old school.

Visit their classroom and meet the teacher. If your school allows it, make an appointment to tour the school and meet the teacher before school starts.

Make new friends, but keep the old. Help your child maintain their friendships from their old school. Arrange playdates for younger kids, and encourage older kids to invite their friends over to hang out, or to text, call or email each other.

TEENS & TWEENS

WORDS BY JENNIFER THOMPSON

When It Goes, They Will Go, Too For the past few days, I’ve been roaming around the house seeing the clutter. The piles. The mess. The extra. The stuff we should have discarded, or donated, or packed up years ago. The too small clothes that are hanging in the closets. The toys that have collected dust because they haven’t been touched in who knows how long. The books that haven’t been read. The games that are no longer played. The shoes that stopped holding their feet long ago.

In every room. Every closet. There is something that needs to be tended to.

But it’s hard to make time, isn’t it? As much as we want the Pinterestworthy home with the Pinterestworthy closets and the organized spaces with the pretty baskets and decked out shelves, that isn’t always life is it?

Life sometimes looks like heaps and piles that we can’t quite get to because other things have taken priority.

Life sometimes looks like endless laundry in endless cycles and dishes stacked in the sink waiting for their turn in the dishwasher.

Life sometimes looks like a garage filled with bins we need to go through, but for the meantime will just stay put.

18

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

Life sometimes looks like running out the door to get to the game on time while stacks of papers and half-drunk cups of water and bags of chips surrounded by small crumbs remain on the kitchen island.

That’s how long I have with this stuff.

Because in this time. In this space. In this moment I find myself in. There are other things that have taken priority.

That’s how long until the pictures and the posters she has tacked up on her wall will come down.

And that’s okay. The other day, when I was having one of these anxious moments, as I looked at all the stuff in my daughter’s room, something hit me so hard, it could have knocked me back onto her bed. Two years.

That’s how long until she will start packing boxes to cart off with her to whatever college she attends.

That’s how long until the closet filled with the clothes she wears down the stairs each morning, groggy-eyed, as she prepares for another day at school, will be emptied.

So, I’m not going to worry so much about the stuff anymore. Not when we are inching so close to the time for them to go.

It will sort itself out. It will eventually be rummaged through and packed up.

It eventually will go.

For now, I will focus on what is here, with me, under this roof. Because I know without a shadow of a doubt these next two years will pass by quickly. And all the two more years after that until we watch our baby walk out the door.

That’s how long.

Then two years after that, another will go. And then another. And then another.

And so much of this stuff will go with them.

The clutter and the piles and the closets with the too small clothes and the rooms with the toys that are untouched almost got the better of me this week.

But not anymore. I’m making peace with the clutter.

But even more than that. What will go with them. What I will miss. What I will long for is their daily presence. The good mornings. The good nights. The hugs. The kisses. The meals shared. The routine. The mundane. The time spent in our home. Together.

When they pack their stuff to do what they must do. To find their own way in their own place and their own space - their daily presence will leave the home, too.

Because it’s a reminder of what’s here and the time we have. And that someday in the not so distant future, the stuff will go.

And when it does, they will go with it.

These simple tips will help take the stress out of party planning

When it comes to throwing a kid's birthday party, there are a lot of dos, don'ts and maybes. Clear up the gray areas of polite partying with these helpful tips.

For school-age children, a general rule of thumb is if you plan to invite nearly the whole class, you should just invite everyone. Otherwise, keep it to half the class or less, or all one gender.

Guests and Invitations

Gifts

In all the excitement of party planning, you and your child may have a hard time narrowing down their guest list. As a parent, you can implement the "Age +1" rule, inviting one kid for each year of your child's age, plus one.

It's common courtesy to bring the birthday kid a gift, unless the invitation says, "No gifts, please." In this case, you can have your child make the birthday kid a nice card. One trend in birthdays is a "fiver party," where each guest brings a five-dollar bill, so the birthday kid can save up for something he or she really wants and the toys don't get out of control.

Don't pass out invitations at school unless you're inviting everyone. If you do not want that many at the party, send invitations in the mail. You should not feel obligated to invite siblings, but if a parent is expected to stay and attend the party, then siblings should also be invited as a convenience to that parent.

26

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

While some people think it's rude not to open gifts during the party, others don't want to take away time from the other activities, especially when paying hourly for a venue. If you choose to open gifts during the birthday party, make sure not to drag it out too long, especially with a group of restless preschoolers. Prep your child to make eye contact and say "thank you" after opening each gift, even duplicates or those they don't like!

Thank You Notes During the party, jot down each gift and the giver's name. If your child can write, have them handwrite thank you notes after the party, or perhaps sign their name. A thank-you note does not have to be long

— three sentences thanking them for the gift, what they liked about it, and how much they appreciated that person coming to their party. You can mail the cards or have your child hand-deliver them to their friend's home, but avoid passing them out at school. To save paper, some parents choose to give an extra verbal thank you or send a quick text. The point is to make sure you are teaching your child to show gratitude.

Party Favors Some parents love goodie bags, and others think they're clutter. It's up to you whether you choose to gift favors, but you don't have to go overboard. Try giving one item, such as a coloring book, sunglasses or something to do with the party theme. You can also have guests decorate a small bag at the party to fill later with candy. Whatever you decide, it's smart to keep a few extras on hand for siblings who attend. Hand these out at the end so nobody forgets, and make sure your child is at the door saying "goodbye" as each guest leaves!

Maternity hospitals in the Indianapolis area are continuously innovating. Now more than ever, there are lots of benefits to giving birth in a hospital – some big and obvious, like having immediate access to top-notch emergency care, and some small, like free valet parking and baby gear. Here are just some of the bonuses to experiencing a hospital birth.

modern and private birthing suites are available, and also include overnight accommodations for one support person and free Wi-Fi. “We think it’s important for parents to be supported in their labor/delivery and postpartum experience,” says Dr. Amanda Underwood, lead obstetric hospitalist at Riley Children’s Health. “All rooms have accommodations to allow a support person to stay in the room with a patient. We encourage babies to be with their parents 23 hours of the 24 hour day.”

Access to Classes and Special Programs Private Suites Labor, delivery and postpartum are all very private events, and hospitals get it. Most hospitals around Indy offer private rooms — from start to finish. For instance, all maternity rooms at Franciscan Health are private, including triage, antepartum, labor and delivery suites, postpartum rooms and NICU rooms. At The Maternity Tower at Riley at IU Health,

Hospitals make the pregnancy and delivery experience a family affair by offering classes and programs for all members of the family. For instance, at Franciscan hospitals, grandparents can attend a virtual Grand Parenting 101 class, which updates grands on all of the changes since they had a baby. Grands can learn about topics like breastfeeding expectations and the safest way to put their grandchild to sleep. “We are slowly returning back to in person classes and have offered classes virtually, which we will continue, throughout the pandemic,” says Erin Neu, OB nurse navigator for Franciscan Health. “One note concerning virtual classes, our educator is teaching live to participants off campus. All of the classes are interactive and not recorded.” Hospitals also offer sibling classes to help ease the transition of a new baby in the family, as well as classes for dads and partners, which cover topics about birth and the early months of a baby’s life.

Midwife and Doula Services For women with low-risk pregnancies who are looking for a less invasive birthing experience, many hospitals around Indy offer the option of midwife services, as well as support from doulas. This allows women a more holistic birthing experience, with the added advantage and safety net of the hospital environment and protocol.

Breastfeeding Help Gone are the days when new moms are fumbling, frustrated and alone with their breastfeeding journeys. For moms who choose to breastfeed, many hospitals offer lactation consultants who will visit immediately postpartum to help baby establish a latch and help moms figure out the (often confusing, at first) path to breastfeeding. At Franciscan Health, a

30

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

lactation consultant is on hand seven days a week and they offer an outpatient lactation clinic one you’ve returned home. Most hospitals also have electric and manual pumps that you can rent and see which you prefer.

Special Food A new baby is a celebration, and what goes better with a celebration than food? At Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, each couple can order a “celebration meal” with their spouse from a special menu with fancier food. Parents at Franciscan Health have access to made-to-order meals delivered to their private room. At IU Health North, the food is so good that sometimes, people will visit just for the food. This could be because the head chef at this kitchen is chef Peter Fulgenzi, who was once the personal chef for actor John Travolta!

Water Birth and Hydrotherapy For women who choose a water birth as their birth plan, hospitals are jumping right into

this trend. You’ll find that most hospitals offer specialized, soothing birthing tubs for laboring moms who are seeking a water birth. Some hospitals, like IU Health, also offer hydrotherapy — showers or immersion tubs — to alleviate discomfort during birth. “Hydrotherapy has been shown to be an effective alternative to pharmacologic (medication) methods for helping patients cope with labor,” Underwood says. “In addition, water birth is offered for those patients who are candidates and who have established care in their pregnancy with a provider who performs this procedure.”

Fun Pampering Perks To make families more comfortable, some hospitals have upped their game. The Maternity Tower at Riley at IU Health has a Ronald McDonald House Family Room inside the hospital — a place for families visiting the NICU to rest, and a place for parents to be pampered. There is a kitchen and designated area for eating, free McDonald’s McCafe coffee, a salon with hairstyling and hydromassage table, nap

pods and an electronic gaming table. They also offer valet parking 24-hours a day at no cost!

Cool Baby Swag We all know that people don’t choose to deliver in a hospital for the swag, but hey, extra perks can be a fun bonus! Many hospitals will send you home with lots of helpful baby items, like diapers, bottles, formula samples, burp cloths and more. At Franciscan Health, St. Vincent Women’s Hospital and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, babies receive a Halo Sleep Sack to promote safe sleep. The Riley Maternity Tower also provides swaddle sacks to new parents as a gift from the Riley Foundation and the Colts Foundation. Sometimes, it’s the little things!

Above all, for many, a hospital birth offers peace of mind. “Delivering a baby in a birth center with hospital services to support the family with an expected or unexpected complication is priceless,” Neu says.

Gender Reveal Ideas Here are some fun ideas to inspire you! Gender reveal parties are a popular trend among pregnant couples, and for good reason: they’re a fun and lighthearted way to get everyone together before the baby’s arrival! Before the big announcement, friends and family of the expectant parents can vote on whether they think the baby is a girl or a boy. The gender is typically revealed through a pink or blue surprise during the party. If you and your partner already know the baby’s sex, you can use these ideas to surprise your family and friends. You can also designate a “keeper of the gender” to plan this part of the reveal, so guests can enjoy your surprised reactions.

Ready to reveal? Here are some inexpensive, exciting ideas for your gender reveal that are simple to pull off.

say it with sweets Here’s a tasty way to reveal the baby’s gender. Bake or order a cake with pink or blue layers (ombre, anyone?), then cover in white icing. Get a video rolling when you cut the cake to reveal a pink or blue secret! This trick also works well with icing-filled donuts or cupcakes — just make sure none of your guests sneak a bite prematurely. If you prefer store-bought sweets, open up a few Oreo cookies to reveal the icing layer, then roll it in sprinkles in the color of your choice. Close the cookies back up, then dip in melted white or dark chocolate. You can also color the word “he” in blue or “she” in pink on the wrapper of a Hershey’s candy bar. Add an outer wrapper of pretty paper to conceal the baby’s gender inside.

balloon bonanza There are many fun takes on a gender reveal balloon. Hide pink or blue helium balloons in a giant cardboard box. Wrap the box in fun wrapping paper, and then surprise your party-goers with a colorful balloon sendoff! You can also fill an extra-large black balloon with pink or blue

32

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

confetti and helium. Tie the balloon’s string onto the back of a chair, then have the parents-to-be pop the balloon with a pin. If you want to include children in the gender reveal, another cute idea is to have them sneak up behind you with a bundle of helium balloons in pink or blue. This is a great way to get less-enthusiastic older siblings a chance to be part of the excitement!

powder perfect The powder cannon is a fairly recent trend in gender reveal parties, with inexpensive options available from big box stores. This reveal is fun to video tape if you want to include out of town guests via social streaming sites. Car enthusiasts might prefer to pack pink or blue powder in the exhaust pipe with a funnel or syringe. When driving away, an impressive cloud of colored smoke will appear. You can buy colored powder for the reveal or make your own with cornstarch, water and gel food coloring. This powder is also fun to put inside balloons or condiment bottles for shooting in the air.

messy moments The kids will love this one! Buy silly string in pink or blue and wrap the cans with paper and tape until the big reveal. Adventurous parents may like to stage a squeeze-bottle paint fight while wearing white

t-shirts or painting on a blank canvas. The shirts or artwork can become a fun memento of the party. Ready for a mess that’s actually fun to clean up? Fill a pinata with candy and confetti in your chosen color and let the kids go wild! You can make your own “pinata” with a cardboard box turned upside down. Fill it with balloons and toys, then attach a string to open it.

sporty surprise Got an athlete in the family? You can buy a soccer ball, baseball, basketball, golf ball, hockey puck, or football that is designed to erupt colored powder on impact. Guests can cast their vote by writing their name in pink or blue on a “scoreboard” before the big reveal!

easy to clean Looking to avoid a messy reveal? Try a gender reveal candle, which gently burns away a top layer to reveal the pink or blue wax inside. Color-changing straws give party guests a chance to get in on the fun right before their eyes as the ice water makes their drinking straw pink or blue. Let your friends light up gender reveal sparklers at the same time to start some colorful fireworks! Or see who is feeling lucky with a scratch-off card that reveals a boy or girl.

BABY ' S FIRS T TRIP TO THE DENTIST Your child’s life will be filled with firsts: first steps, first words, and, of course, the first trip to the dentist. Below are a few tips to establish your child’s dental home.

When to go The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends the first dental visit within 6 months after the first tooth erupts or no later than the child’s first birthday. While this may seem early, it is actually the perfect time to acclimate your toddler to regular dental visits and get advice on eruption patterns, tooth cleaning, pacifiers, fluoride and prevention of tooth injuries for young walkers.

How to choose a dentist While a parent’s first instinct may be to take their child to their own dentist, it is worth weighing the benefits of choosing a pediatric dentist. While general dentists are qualified to work with patients of all ages, pediatric dentists are required to obtain additional training that focuses on the specific dental needs of growing children.

What to expect A child’s first visit to the dentist is relatively quick and easy, with the majority of the time spent educating the parent on a variety of children’s oral health topics, including brushing techniques for toddlers and infants, proper use of

fluoride, oral habits (i.e. pacifiers and thumb sucking), ways to prevent accidents that could damage the face and teeth, teething and milestones of development, and dietary habits that may be putting your child at risk for cavities.

How to get started on the right foot Remember, your child has no preconceived notion of what to expect at the dentist and will be taking cues from you. It is therefore important to keep your own emotions in check. Parents can introduce their child to the concept of the dentist using one of the many children’s books and educational YouTube videos themed around the first trip to the dentist.

Even with preparation, it is age-appropriate for young children to wiggle, fuss, cry and whine at their first visit. Rest assured, pediatric dentists and their staff are trained and equipped to handle these responses and make the best out of each visit.

When it comes to dental health, prevention is key. Establishing a dental home by your child’s first birthday will set the stage for a healthy smile and a lifetime of good oral hygiene.

TIPS

FOR

CHOOSING

YOUR B ABY'S PEDIATRICIAN Selecting a pediatrician for your child is an important decision and one that parents shouldn’t take lightly.

Whether you’re expecting a baby, new to town or unhappy with your previous provider, finding a pediatrician for your child is likely one of the items high on your to-do list. Having a pediatrician you see regularly not only helps you track your child’s developmental milestones, it’s essential to be established with a practice so that you have a provider familiar with your child’s history when health concerns arise. With so many pediatric options available, beginning the search can be daunting. There are medical doctors, osteopathic doctors and nurse practitioners; pediatric-specific practices and family practices; providers focusing on traditional healthcare and those with more holistic approaches. As you begin to sift through your options, here are some questions to consider.

36

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

Are They Recommended? Asking pediatrician recommendations from friends or family members who share your health values is a great way to focus your search. With a few names in hand, you can do further research to see if any of the recommendations are a good fit for your family. First, check out the provider’s website for basic information and then schedule a consultation interview for a more intimate look at the practice, keeping in mind that even a provider who comes highly recommended by someone you trust doesn’t necessarily make them the right one for your family.

Where are They Located? Think through the times of day you’re likely to be visiting the pediatrician and where you’ll be during that time, whether that’s work, home, or your child’s school or daycare facility. When your child is sick, you want access to be easy.

Do They Meet Basic Requirements? Before diving into any further research, make sure that the provider you’re considering meets basic standards of care. There are several things Dr. Gregory L. Smith, MD, of Southpointe Pediatrics recommends you look into. Do they accept your insurance? What are the provider’s qualifications—are they a doctor, nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant—and will you see the same person every time? “Also choose a pediatrician who goes to the hospital you plan to utilize for delivery or anything else afterwards,” Smith recommends. “You don’t want someone who would be unable to care for your child in a hospital-based setting.”

What’s Their Communication Style? Learning about how both the office and the doctor will communicate with you will give you a sense of the office culture. Are the receptionists friendly and do they provide clear information? If you have a medical question, are you able to talk directly to a doctor or nurse? How are after-hours

concerns handled? Does the office use a portal system for communicating appointments, billing and test results, and if not, how do they share that information? While these things might not necessarily be deal breakers, it’s good to know what to expect communication-wise and if it fits your preferences. “To have a good patient/ physician relationship you have to have good trust,” Smith says. “If you walk out not feeling right, it’s probably not the right fit.”

What Is the Office Like? During a consultation, get a sense of how the office itself feels. “You want comfort with the location, facility and people caring for your child, especially since you will be there often,” Smith says. Take notice if sick children are separated from wellness visits in the waiting area, and whether you find it an inviting atmosphere. Ultimately, you want a place where you and your children feel welcome and at ease.

Do They Share Your Healthcare Values?

aligns with your healthcare values. Smith recommends asking them about their views on things like vaccinations, how they treat common child illnesses, and how frequently they want to see children for wellness visits. You may also ask about their views on breastfeeding, circumcision, medication use, and alternative or integrative medicine approaches, as well as if they have knowledge on any special medical concerns that affect your child. Overall, get a sense of if they listen to your questions and concerns and if you feel comfortable at the office. If anything doesn’t feel right, question it further.

It may take some time to find a pediatrician that is the right fit for your family, and that’s OK. Keep the conversation open with your pediatrician by asking good questions, voicing any concerns you have as they arise, and advocating for your child at all times. Remember, if you are unhappy with your provider for any reason, you’re not stuck with them forever. However, ultimately, you hope you can find a provider who will care for your children from the time they’re a baby until they head off to college.

Scanning the practice’s website and meeting for a consultation can give you an idea if the doctor

A Truly Inclusive Vacation

Tips for making summer travel fun for everyone in your family. It’s the time of year for allthings summer. And that means pool parties, popsicles on a hot day, chasing fireflies at night and taking some time off for the much needed summer family vacation. The dates are marked off on the calendar. The reservations have been made. You are all set to go, but maybe you’re starting to wonder: How is this going to work for my child with special needs? How do I make this vacation a positive experience, not only for them, but for all of us? Angie Kost, an occupational therapist in Indianapolis, has provided some helpful tips on how to make summer travel a fun and truly inclusive experience for your child.

38

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2022

What are some things parents should consider when planning for a vacation with a child with disabilities? Be aware of the accommodations available. For example, some places may allow a child with a disability (autism for example) to go ahead of the line for an activity. You will also want to know about safety and wheelchair accessibility, if that is needed. Another thing to consider is planning shorter activities so your child doesn't get too fatigued, causing meltdowns.

Understand your child's sensory needs and make adaptations or plans to address as necessary. For example, some children are overstimulated in loud or busy environments. In that case, you might modify where you go to eat, or how you do certain activities. Another example is that some children may be sensitive to the environment at the beach. Work on desensitization before the trip. A few examples might be reading a book about the beach, playing in

sand or listening to a video of the ocean.

Be aware if your child has difficulty with changes in routine. If so, you might want to review the activities of the day, or consider creating a picture schedule. If things don’t go as you had hoped, that’s OK. Be f lexible. You can also have an "oops" card for those instances that don't go as planned.

What are some tips for traveling to and from the destination? 1. Take frequent rest breaks for movement and for the bathroom. 2. Have activities for the car or plane, such as fidgets, games or videos to watch. 3. Snacks are your friend!

Finally, to make travel truly inclusive, don't limit yourself to what summer activities you want to do. Learn to modify and adapt your plans to your child's specific physical, intellectual or sensory needs. Be f lexible, and have fun! Make memories that you and your family will cherish for a lifetime.
