The Summer of "Yes" What a difference a year makes. This time last year, many of us were feeling like we were in a state of limbo and loss. We were all collectively missing the usual events and activities that make summer great: the outdoor concerts, the festivals and fairs, the casual visits to favorite restaurants and shops, the get-togethers with friends and family. But this year, there is a sense that things are returning to normal.

Last year was spent having to say no a lot when my kids asked to visit their favorite places and do their favorite summer activities. This year, I'm excited to turn that around and say yes to all the things I can for my family and my kids. This is our summer of “yes!” Yes, let’s explore new places and revisit old ones. Yes,

let’s eat junk food for dinner at the state fair. Yes, let’s try to set the world record for visiting the pool every day. (We’re at nine days in a row, as of this writing. Wish us luck.) We’re excited to help you make this season your “summer of yes” too! Just turn to our Summer Fun Guide, starting on page 28. It’s packed with lots of great ideas for ways to enjoy the summer with your family. From the best splash pads in Central Indiana to the coolest ice cream shops in Indy, summer fun is back, and it’s better than ever. Enjoy your summer!

Birdies Birdies Miniature Golf in Westfield is an incredibly fun way to spend a summer afternoon or evening with the whole family. It is the kind of place where parents can sit outside on a nice evening and finish their meal peacefully while the children play one of the many patio games or a round of miniature golf. A bubbling creek flows through the 36-hole course. My boys loved exploring the rock cave and catching the spray from a cascading waterfall. The course is fun and accessible for all ages, the snack bar has kidfriendly food (like sliders), and the staff was great. My boys and I met some friends after school, and chose to golf 18 holes on the more scenic and easier side of the course. (Here’s a tip: A cloudy, cool weekday afternoon meant that we had the whole course to ourselves!)

The course was clean and picturesque. We felt like we were on vacation! When the kids were finished golfing, we returned our clubs and picked out some beverages from the snack shack. There was plenty of porch seating, and we hung out to finish our drinks before departing. The porch at Birdies is awesome — I’ve never been to a restaurant that has a space like it. I think it will become our go-to location when we have family or friends in town for a visit. Birdies offers weekday specials, which might make a visit even more enticing. Bring the whole family on Wednesdays when kids eat for free!

WORDS BY LARK JONES, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

Celebrate a Trip Around the Sun with Your Little One Imagine the look on the faces of your child and nine of her closest friends as they pass a giant dinosaur that is peeking into the world’s largest children’s museum. Little ones will feel like they are on their own private movie set — complete with Bumblebee™ (Transformer™ from the original movie) and some of their favorite characters turned into exhibits like Barbie® and Dora and Diego. The adventure begins as each guest picks up their museum tickets and is escorted to their private party room fit for royalty, complete with a special chair for the guest of honor. “My favorite thing to see is when the child sees their birthday party room for the first time, and the excitement over the throne that is all theirs,” says Skylee Campbell, store manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “It’s really special to see how excited they get over all the little details.”

The décor sets the scene with choices of grand princess chandeliers, unicorn centerpieces or blow-up astronauts. Another themed option includes cups with dinosaur handles and pictures of a T. rex trying to take a bite out of the

Continue the themed celebration at home. If your child is into dinosaurs, you can purchase Dino Bingo or monopoly in the Museum Store or create your own matching fossil game. Cook a menu of veggies for herbivores or meaty treats for carnivores, and talk about which meal their favorite dinos prefer. Then, remember all of the fun you had on the carousel by using animal decor at home. Spin the wheel to land on an animal and talk about its traits. Barbie fans might enjoy flashcards of the iconic doll in one of her dozens of careers, and talk about the skill set needed for that career. Is it creativity, nurturing, adventurousness or the ability to solve problems? What about that career is appealing for your little one? To celebrate their trip around the sun, launch a space party with a moon rock hunt, spaceship pinata or a candy meteor shower, glow sticks and frisbees serve as fun flying saucers.

plate. Or, help your child discover their super powers with superhero bling. Who would have thought there would be a place to celebrate and capture your child’s dreams in such a fun and imaginative way?

Choose one of the three birthday party packages designed to make your celebration as easy and go as smoothly as possible. The build your own, all-inclusive, and signature birthday party packages each have unique offerings for your 90-minute celebration. Then, spend the rest of the day exploring the museum together.

SCHOOL AFTER THE PANDEMIC:

what's next?

Local education leaders weigh in on how their schools have adapted over the past year.

t

WORDS BY LINDSAY CONNER

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused people to pivot and change the way they do everything — and this is especially true for schools. Indianapolis-area schools have adapted and grown in many ways, such as setting up quarantine areas in school clinics and hiring extra substitute teachers. Schools are already making plans to help the next year go as smoothly as possible, but what will 2021-22 look like for students and parents? Some students who have been e-learning are eager to get back into the classroom. But as Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township learned, families want options. “We are offering instructional program choice of full in-person, hybrid or full virtual learning for the 2021-22 school year,” says Dr. Tim Harshbarger, Assistant Superintendent for Schools. Dr. Dana Altemeyer, director of communications for MSD Lawrence Township, explains that 67 percent of students learned in-person last year, while the others learned via a virtual or hybrid method.

14

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2021

Harshbarger adds: “We kept our focus on meeting the needs of the kids, both academically and social/emotionally, while keeping the learning environment as safe as possible. Honestly, kids were at home so much in the spring and summer [of 2020], they really were motivated to get back to school and see friends, even if that meant wearing a mask!” The return of co-curricular events, like sports, music and theater, was a game changer for students attending school in-person. MSD Lawrence Township had to become creative, doing such things as staggered rehearsals, having the choir rehearse in an outdoor atrium or even the loading dock behind the high school. With more research and science available on COVID-19, schools can improve their decision-making this school year, whether it’s in classroom layout, social distancing, or offering bottled water and personal protective equipment in schools. “We have learned a great deal about contract tracing and quarantining,” Altemeyer says. “We quarantined a lot of staff and students throughout the year; however, we also believe that led to far fewer positive cases in our schools.”

MSD Lawrence Township developed a COVID Re-entry Task Force Team to help navigate the onslaught of information on school re-entry, according to national, state and county guidelines. Having this team already formed will undoubtedly help the district work with community partners to help with testing and vaccinations into the school year. Given that the district now has access to student-issued Chromebooks and experience navigating connectivity issues, they will be even better prepared to educate students in a variety of ways when schools start in the fall. Teachers will go into the year with virtual classroom experience, having offered classes “live” as well as asynchronous workplans. Schools have also adapted to connecting with parents

and prospective families virtually, hosting online meetings in lieu of conferences. Keeping the public informed via regular parent and staff updates was always high priority, and that is one area where schools have thrived. In their decision to operate in-person as much as was safely possible last year, The Orchard School made significant modifications to schedules, events, and learning spaces. And this meant getting students, staff, and families on board. “Establishing the physical distancing protocol was probably the single greatest obstacle,” says Nick Eble, Assistant Head of School for Orchard. “Given our school's penchant for experiential, cooperative activities, we had to recalibrate our expectations. We modified many of our longstanding

traditions and grade-level highlights.” That said, Eble is proud of the way the staff kept student experience at the center of the conversation during these challenging times. “Orchard students arrived each and every day as excited to be here as always, and we worked diligently to live up to our nearly 100-year history of engaging, hands-on learning,” Eble says. In hindsight, Eble says the challenges presented last school year only strengthened the values they’ve always held dear at Orchard. “Learning is a social act, and being together is the best way to accomplish our collective goals,” he says. “Yes, we did learn about new ways to use technology to extend our classrooms into people's homes. But when it comes down to it, that will never replace

the impact and importance of working together, in person, in a diverse community of classmates.” As schools open this year, administrators are already keen on finding ways to leave the frustration, grief and disappointments of the past school year behind. “Obviously, there were hard moments, but we all knew that we were working to create the best learning environments and experiences we could, given the public health constraints imposed by a global pandemic,” Eble says.

Looking forward, Eble hopes to keep students and staff motivated by celebrating learning through shared moments of joy and lots of laughter. “We frame our work through the goals of love, connection and learning, and that really helps guide us through the year,” he says.

During the 2020-21 school year, educators across the city were faced with a seemingly impossible task: continue to deliver the highest-quality instruction on a daily basis while ensuring the safety of both students and staff. Many of the lessons learned in the past year are ones that area schools will carry with them into the coming year, and beyond. We asked leaders from several schools to share how their school has adapted and grown since the pandemic. BELOW ARE THEIR RESPONSES.

Cathedral High School At the beginning of the pandemic, we needed technology to stay connected to our students in somewhat of an emergency mode. Through that process, we learned several pathways that also helped us during face-to-face instruction, allowing us to individualize instruction at an even higher level. In addition, while we saw what all is possible virtually, the biggest win was the resiliency of our students, families, and educators. – Julie Barthel, Principal

Sycamore School The environment required us to rethink everything we've done before. We learned that we can stay true to our mission by adapting to external conditions and learning new strategies and methodologies. We continue to offer our kids the rigorous and robust educational experiences they need. There is immense satisfaction in the ultimate success of a uniquely challenging and stimulating year. – Diane Borgmann, Head of School

Brebeuf In our end of the year reflections, a theme that arose across the students, faculty and staff was immense gratitude for strong professional relationships. While the vocabulary of 2019-21 constantly included flexible, pivot, unprecedented, and change....we were grounded in faith, hope, and trust in each other. And when all else is uncertain, that knowledge made everything possible.

– Jen LaMaster, Assistant Principal

International School of Indiana Though we’ve always been an innovative school, the pandemic sped up change in tremendous ways and taught our entire community that there are benefits to embracing change. With global mobility halting, and fewer international students able to physically come to Indiana, we welcomed more local students and families to our school community while simultaneously serving international students remotely. – Kristen Kaiser, VP Development & External Affairs

Heritage Christian School To meet the expectations and best interests of its' community, Heritage provided in-person, in-class education throughout the past year while complying with health safety protocols. We avoided remote, distance-learning and hybrid instruction models, effectively leveraging our strategies for masking up, distancing, cohorts, enhanced health and safety services, re-designed classroom spaces, and creative activity management. Our goal for 2021-22 is to do all we can to guard our ability to continue providing in-person learning.

– Gary Roebbelen, Heritage Communications Director

Local Spotlight: LiftOff Creamery This downtown aviation-themed ice cream shop is invested in showing students the ropes of owning a small business.

students come from all demographics, including underserved communities from the city’s east side.

At only 14 years of age, Ryan Lynch got his start flying airplanes. “A lot of people don’t realize that you can get your pilot’s license before your driver’s license. And I have been flying ever since,” Lynch laughs. Perhaps it is this firsthand experience of having big responsibility at such a tender age that inspired Lynch to trust high school-aged students to help oversee the day-to-day operations of running his aviation-themed ice cream shop, LiftOff Creamery, in downtown Indianapolis. The program, still in its infancy, started shortly after the store opened in September 2020. In fact, Lynch is actively searching for his next crop of young entrepreneurs. Having a love of ice cream and aviation helps, since those are Lynch’s passions, but all that is required for the students is a commitment of helping around the shop for 60 to 80 hours a semester (or year, depending on the student’s flexibility of schedule) and a determination to own their own business someday. “I teach the students the business side of what I do, answering all their questions like, how did you get started? Where did you go to learn about business? How did you get the startup funds? After you

Lynch teaches the students all the requisite business skills, from the necessity of practicing time management to building great customer service. “If they think running your own business is going to be a 40 hour a week job, it’s not,” Lynch says. But he is quick to point out the pros — like teaching others how to chart a pathway to success on their own terms with their own businesses. Lynch loves ice cream and aviation, and excitedly lists off each of his 120 ice cream flavors like Amelia Earhart, a strawberry ice cream named after the famous aviator, because strawberry was her favorite.

got started, how do you order your product? Who do you talk to for that? And how do you operate the location to make sure if it’s sustainable long-term? Being the owner, I am able to show them how I got my start and teach them the ins and outs of running a small business,” Lynch says. Thus, students receive a hands-on business education that they may not get in the classroom.

Lynch got into business the old-fashioned way: through hard work and a curiosity about what it takes to run a successful business. He says he reads the Indianapolis Business Journal and attends meetings with local entrepreneurial groups. Everything he has learned he wants to pass down to the next generation. “There are places you can go to pay for the sort of training I am giving the students, but not all these places are very reputable,” cautions Lynch, whose

“I was born and raised in Indianapolis,” Lynch says. “I love this community and want to give back in the form of mentorship to others and helping them get their start in business.” Lynch is working with high schools in the area to craft a program through which students may receive course credit for their hard work at the store. If interested in participating in the mentorship program, students can reach out to Lynch through LiftOff Creamery’s website (liftoffcreamery.com) for more information.

PREGNANCY AFTER LOSS With a rainbow baby on the way, you should be happy, right? It’s OK to have mixed feelings during a pregnancy after loss, and here’s how to cope.

WORDS BY RACHAEL DUPREE

I

t was only three months after I my miscarriage when I became pregnant with my rainbow baby. While I wanted to be happy about another chance to bring life into the world, part of me was afraid to get excited or share the news. I often had flashbacks to the night of my loss and felt anxious about what this new pregnancy would bring. I worried with every little cramp in my body that I was losing the baby again, and I obsessively checked for signs of blood. While each time I heard the baby’s heartbeat brought relief, I didn’t let myself get fully attached to the little being growing inside me until he reached the age of viability outside the womb.

26

INDYSCHILD.COM I July 2021

If you’re also experiencing intense emotions in a pregnancy after a miscarriage or stillbirth, know you’re not alone. It’s common after a loss for women to experience intrusive memories, flashbacks, hypervigilance, distrust of their bodies, and feelings of apprehension, fear or dread — making the joy that accompanies the news of conception very confusing as our brains try to make sense of our experiences and prevent them from happening again.

The truth is, a pregnancy loss is usually not the mother’s fault. As you navigate the emotionally complicated journey of a new pregnancy, give yourself permission to experience your full range of emotions and seek out support during this

vulnerable time. Here are some ways you can cope as you look toward the rainbow after the storm.

1. BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF Your new pregnancy will not feel the same as the one before your loss, and it won’t make your grief go away. Acknowledge all the feelings you’re experiencing — the sadness, the hope, the fear, the joy — and know there’s no one correct way to move forward.

“You have the right to be just as you are right now, knowing that holding conflicting feelings does not invalidate them,” says Courtney Williams, a licensed

mental health therapist in Indianapolis who specializes in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, pregnancy and infant loss, and fertility. “You are allowed to be both sad about your loss and happy and scared about your current pregnancy.” In fact, the feelings of grief may continue once your rainbow baby is born, she says. There is nothing wrong with this. You’ve endured a huge loss, so be kind to yourself

2. FIND PROVIDERS WHO SUPPORT YOU Mothers-to-be who have experienced a pregnancy loss often need extra support and

reassurance. Talk with your provider about your history. Do they show sensitivity when discussing your loss? Are they understanding of emergency appointments to check symptoms or hear the baby’s heartbeat? Can they connect you with other trauma-informed supports? “Having a medical team who understands and supports you through this is crucial,” Williams says. “If you feel dismissed by your medical provider, it’s OK to find a provider who takes the time to listen to your concerns and validates your unique needs.”

3. SEEK MENTAL HEALTH THER APY Trauma-informed therapy is key during this time if you’re experiencing anxiety or depression surrounding your loss, particularly

if those feelings are interfering with day-to-day activities, you’re displaying obsessive-compulsive behaviors, or you’re having thoughts about harming yourself or someone else.

“It’s OK to not be OK,” Williams says. “If you find that you are struggling with your mood, seek support. Deciding to carry another baby after experiencing a loss is a vulnerable experience. You don’t have to do it alone.”

Trauma-informed therapists can use a variety of modalities to help explore and process your loss, including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, complicated grief therapy and emotionally focused therapy. If you don’t connect with the first therapist you see, don’t hesitate to ask for a referral or seek another

provider. And remember, if therapy alone isn’t helpful, you can talk to your OB/GYN about exploring medications that can be used safely during pregnancy.

4. CONNECT WITH OTHERS There is something incredibly healing about sharing your story with others. Keeping in close communication with your partner who may also be struggling, as well as friends and family, is important not only for you but your baby, Williams says. Attending a pregnancy loss support group can also be helpful.

Often you can find the support you need in simply allowing others to help when they offer. Have a specific answer ready when people

ask “How can I help?” Keep a list at the ready of things like meals, laundry, stocking baby supplies or accompanying you to the doctor. “Deciding to carry another baby after experiencing a loss is a vulnerable experience,” Williams says. “You don’t have to do it alone.”

Nearly a year after the birth of my healthy rainbow baby — and a lot of relational and professional support along the way — I still get a twinge of sadness when I think about the baby that didn’t make it full-term. Those feelings don’t go away — nor do I want them to — but the pain does get easier over time. By being kind with ourselves and sharing our journey with others, we can clear a path of healing and support for ourselves and other women going through this experience.

Frederick Douglass Park Centennial Celebration July 7, 1921. One hundred years ago this summer, a park opened on East 25th Street, providing our city’s Black community with a place to gather freely to play, to learn and to spend time together. In a tense time of segregation, Frederick Douglass Park was a safe haven for Black families. In the past century, generations have found community and comfort in the park that is now considered a centerpiece of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. In honor of the historic milestone, Indy Parks is inviting you to join us this July for the Frederick Douglass Park Centennial Celebration presented by Citizens Energy Group. It all starts on Tuesday, July 6, with a day of volunteer clean-ups, with neighbors and community partners coming together to help spruce up the park. The next several days will be full of activities, including food service programs, a community pool party, aerobics and yoga classes, and an appreciation dinner, allowing volunteers to recognize community members who helped make Douglass Park what it is today.

There are also plans to celebrate the history of sports within the park’s community with a golf tournament and a basketball clinic. The week leads up to the 5th annual Circle Up Indy Peace Festival on Saturday, July 10, which will be a day packed with live entertainment, activities and tasty food from local vendors. Several community organizations have been invited to share information on how they’re helping support the neighborhood through programs, resources, and employment and educational opportunities. We are making sure that pieces of the park’s history are present throughout the celebration. Photos from a new Indianapolis Public Library collection will be on display showcasing some of the park’s earliest days, and a historian will join us to help reflect on the sense of family and belonging that the park has provided neighbors in the Martindale-Brightwood community since its founding. You can follow the full schedule of the Douglass Park 100th anniversary celebration at parks.indy.gov. We hope to see you out celebrating the summer with us at Indy Parks!
