HomeRoom If you’ve walked around the pockets of shops off the Monon Trail at 54th Street in south Broad Ripple, you may have noticed a door with an eyecatching mural of scissors. Beyond that door is where owner Shelly Leer offers HomeRoom, a creative DIY modern maker space. HomeRoom empowers guests to move beyond their fears by teaching them how to design, repair, and create useful and meaningful objects for themselves, friends, family and the community. Don’t expect the run-of-the-mill paper, glue sticks and glitter crafts. Instead, think drills, hammers, handsaws — and even sewing machines. Kids 7 and older get to try these “scary” things, all under the adult supervision of Leer and her team. Leer is an experienced expert and educator, and a contributor to Real Simple, Bob Vila online, Country Living, Apartmenttherapy. com, and the Indianapolis Star. She’s also taught sewing classes at The Indianapolis Art Center, as well as at a local shelter for abused women and kids.

Leer offers private and custom workshops, summer camps, parties and in-studio rentals. Recent classes have included beginning sewing and textile arts, maker birthday parties, and upholstery for adults. Kid classes have been fondly called meditative and calming “junk drawer” parties. Kids creatively use items such as grommet rings, earrings, fabric swatches, necklaces, charms, bells, vintage hardware, scrap metal conduit —even chop-sawed parquet f loor tiles. Parents enjoy the classes, as each experience integrates STEAM curricula. Kids are so busy having fun that they don’t even know they are learning valuable and practical skills. From messy elementary-aged kids and screen-loving teens — to moms who need “me” time — HomeRoom offers something for everyone. 1101 E. 54th St., Indianapolis thehomeroomshop.com

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY BRIANNA VANDERBILT, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

50 Years of Smiles and Laughs with SCOOBY-DOO ™ Create Your Own SCOOBY™ Snacks!

Children have been gathering clues and solving mysteries alongside Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and their canine pal SCOOBYDOO™ for over 50 years!

When they’re not solving mysteries with friends, you can find Shaggy and SCOOBY™ enjoying their favorite snacks! Shaggy loves Shaggy Snacks, a towering pot pie made with pizza crust, anchovies, pepperoni, cherries, and topped off with chocolate sauce, of course! SCOOBY DOO’s™ favorite snack is SCOOBY Snacks™!

Educators confirm that solving mysteries spark curiosity and create fun memories for families. SCOOBY-DOO™ encourages viewers to think critically and solve problems. The series also gives kiddos an incredible example of what it looks like to be part of a team and work with others to solve difficult tasks. Problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork are skills that children use their entire lives. Families and children can put those skills to the test when The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, in partnership with Warner Brothers, opens SCOOBYDOO™ Mansion Mayhem on June 4, 2022.

Young detectives discover how they can use math to solve tricky problems, or think back to yesterday’s spaghetti when investigating the new stain on the carpet. When you do this, problem solving is occurring. This important skill will be put to the test as families work their way through the rooms of the mansion and help the members of Mystery Inc. uncover who stole the jewel.

Get all the energy you and your family need to solve mysteries by making your own family-friendly SCOOBY™ Snacks!

Similar to problem solving, critical thinking is another lifelong skill that is used in day-to-day life. It is often seen in the classroom when trying to understand stories, or even when communicating with friends and family. This skill is one that is essential to success in school and in the workplace. It is also essential for solving mysteries. When families are analyzing clues, critical thinking takes place.

Few shows air long enough for parents and children to have the same experiences and warm memories. This makes SCOOBYDOO™ special and a great intergenerational way to bond with one another. Now this experience can move from the living room to The Children’s Museum. Create memories and learn important skills with Mystery Incorporated.

Ingredients: 1 cup room temperature unsalted butter 2/3 cup granulated sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla Sprinkles, of course!

Steps: 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Mix the butter and 2/3 cups of sugar using a hand mixer. Slowly add flour and vanilla. 3. Have the kiddos roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place on the baking sheet, and gently flatten the cookie balls. 4. Add sprinkles, like Shaggy would! 5. Have mom and dad put the cookies in the oven, and let them bake for 14-16 minutes. Let cookies cool for at least 10 minutes — this allows the cookies to finish baking. 6. Enjoy, and get ready to help the gang solve the mystery!

The Summer Reading Program, taking place from June 6 until July 30, offers free workshops, programs, prizes, and great books for all ages. It’s easy to sign up for Camp Read S’more - simply download the Beanstack app, visit indypl. beanstack.org on the web, or stop by your nearest branch to register with a staff member. Participants track the time spent reading, listening to audiobooks, reading aloud to someone, or having someone read to them. Prizes, which include passes to the Children's Museum's Haunted House, tickets to Indianapolis Indians games, free pizza from Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, and Eiteljorg Museum admission, Snapology fall class passes, A College Choice 529 Savings Plan, and books are earned at one hour, five hours, 10 hours, 15 hours, and 20 hours of reading. Shael Weidenbach, IndyPL’S youth services manager, says that if participants read for just 20 minutes a day they can easily reach 20 hours by the end of the program. Weidenbach hopes the program makes reading enjoyable, no matter what reading level participants are at.

Find A Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Celebration Near You: “Reading is like riding a bike,” said Weidenbach. “You need to keep practicing to get better, but once you master reading, it becomes enjoyable and provides the freedom to explore new things. Without the structure of school, children, especially those that struggle with reading, let go of that daily reading experience. Our mission for the summer reading program is to motivate children to read for fun and develop literacy skills during the summer because kids and teens who read for pleasure become lifelong learners.” There are various workshops that kids and teens can participate in including Spooky Campfire Stories, Garden Buddies with Mr. Tony, and a Campfire Obstacle Course with JumpBunch. Being Prepared for Summertime Injuries Stay safe this season with these common-sense precautions.

· Use insect repellant to limit mosquito bites and repel ticks, and wear long sleeves and pants if the weather permits.

Summer is typically a joyous time full of things to celebrate. The season brings with it lots of time outdoors, cookouts, and participating in sports or other physical activities. But the downside of summer is the increased risk of injury. Learning about summer injury prevention will help keep you and your family safe this season. “Families can enjoy all that summer has to offer while staying safe by taking easy, practical steps to limit accidents and environmental exposures,” says Sean Thompson, medical director of pediatric medicine at Riley Children’s Health at IU Health North. “Our team in the emergency department is happy to take care of any child who needs us, but ultimately, we hope for every child to have an injury-free, fun summer!”

Preventing the Top Childhood Summertime Injuries Thompson says that one of the top ways that children injure themselves during the summer is due to that Fourth of July favorite: fireworks. “Some of the most serious injuries we see are burns or eye injuries related to fireworks,” Thompson says.

· Check hair and skin for ticks after being in the woods, high grasses or bushes. · Apply sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours or after being in the water. If possible, dress children in UPF clothing. · Have your child wear a hat when outdoors in the sun. He suggests enjoying public firework displays, rather than using fireworks at home. “If you do your own fireworks, only adults should be using fireworks and they should not be accessible by children,” Thompson says.

Playground visits happen more often during the summer, too. Thompson suggests that good supervision and ensuring playground equipment is safe and used correctly will prevent most serious playground injuries.

Swimming and water-related accidents also rank as one of the top ways that kids can find themselves in the emergency department during the summer.

And no matter the season: Be sure your child is wearing protective gear when riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards or anything with wheels. “The highest priority is a helmet,” Thompson says. “Protect their brains. Helmets work!”

“Water provides so much enjoyment but requires constant vigilance,” Thompson says. “Avoid distraction and maintain close supervision when your child is in or around water. Provide ‘touch supervision’: any child under 5 should be within an arm’s reach of an adult. Young children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water.”

More Summertime Safety Tips Summertime means more time in the sun, more encounters with insects and more exposure to the elements. What are some ways that parents can protect their children from non-accident-related summertime woes? Thompson offers these tips:

· Never leave a child in a car by themselves for ANY amount of time. · Offer water every 20 minutes while outside. · Provide frequent breaks in the shade.

At Riley Children’s at IU Health North in Carmel, you’ll find an ER staffed by highly skilled Riley doctors and nurses.

RESTAURANTS

Where Families Can Dine Outside This Summer It’s patio season, which means taking advantage of these long days and warm nights in Indianapolis by dining outdoors. Here's a round-up of some family-friendly, must-try restaurants that feature great outdoor dining.

Baby’s 2147 N. Talbott St., Indianapolis

You’ll find kid-approved smash burgers, fried chicken and milkshakes on the menu, but the best part of Baby’s (from a kid’s perspective) is the awesome kids play area on the patio. They also offer magnet tiles for little ones to play with while you’re waiting for your food!

Field Brewing 303 E Main Street, Westfield

Sometimes, parents just need a great restaurant with great food and drinks, where their children can play close by. That’s Field Brewing in a nutshell. This Westfield brewery has an amazing garden and outdoor patio seating, with an area where visitors can play bocce ball, giant Jenga, and just hang out on the artificial turf.

INDYSCHILD.COM I June 2022

Ford’s Garage 13193 Levinson Lane, Noblesville

Car lovers will get a kick out of Ford’s Garage, a restaurant that is decked out with Ford car parts and memorabilia. There are even real cars inside the restaurant! After your meal, walk outside of the restaurant and make a right, and you’ll see an outdoor play area for kids, which is part of the Hamilton Town Center outdoor shopping mall.

Fork + Ale House 350 Veterans Way, Carmel

Fork + Ale House serves all the kid favorites: chicken tenders, burgers, and white mac and cheese. But it really shines because it’s situated right in the center of Carmel’s Midtown Plaza. During nice weather, choose to sit on Fork + Ale House’s patio, and you’ll be near the outdoor ping pong tables, pool tables and giant LED TV screen. Parents can enjoy their meal while the kids play!

Half Liter BBQ 5301 Winthrop Ave., Indianapolis

Half Liter BBQ is a great place to bring your half-pints. Not only does this Broad Ripple restaurant serve up some of the best barbecue in Indianapolis, but there is a large outdoor seating area that is open, casual, and family-friendly. You can even

play a game of cornhole while you’re waiting for your food! And don’t forget to get dessert after your meal, as Half Liter serves two kid favorite: Dippin’ Dots and Rice Krispie Treats!

Iozzo’s Garden of Italy 946 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis

A good restaurant for older kids, Iozzo’s Garden of Italy has been serving up Italian-American classics in Indy for years. Iozzo’s patio is magical around dinner time, when the twinkling lights sparkle, making the gorgeous fountain in the garden shimmer. Italian music softly playing adds to the ambiance.

Lou Malnati’s Broad Ripple 6320 Ferguson St., Indianapolis

The only Lou Malnati’s in Indy with a dine-in eatery, this Chicago-based deep-dish pizza restaurant also

has a large outdoor patio that overlooks the Broad Ripple canal. Lou’s features an extensive kids menu, as well as a fun circus theme throughout the restaurant — including fun wacky mirrors that make you feel like you’re in a fun house!

Traders Point Creamery 9101 Moore Road, Zionsville

Traders Point Creamery is a working dairy farm that offers local ingredients at their farm-to-table restaurant. From April through October, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the farm property, and visit with some of the Traders Point Creamery cows, chickens and other animals that call the Zionsville farm their home. And for dessert, kids will especially love that there’s a Dairy Bar on site, where you can order freshly made ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes and floats, which you can enjoy inside the restaurant or outdoors on the big patio.
