Best Summer Ever It’s time for a confession. I literally can’t remember the last time my husband and I went on a date. You know, the kind of outing that includes zero kids, and is just you and your spouse. The kind that you book a babysitter for, and change out of your leggings for, and visit a restaurant that you might need reservations for. The pandemic has put a lot of things on hold, and date night is one of them.
I’m sure you can relate. As busy parents, date night — or any type of anything that doesn’t revolve around kids and parenting — has taken a back seat to the million other things we’ve been dealing with this crazy year. But think of date night as a form of self care. As parents, we need to fill our buckets before we can fill the buckets of others.
Is it time for you to plan a date night, too? If so, turn to “Great Date Night Ideas in Indy” on page 22. We have lots of local ideas for unique (and fun!) things to do around Indy, so you and your partner can have a great — kid-free! — time together. You’ll also want to dig into our calendar of events on page 34, where you’ll find lots of things to do as a family. So many events that were put on pause last year are back and better than ever. We’re excited for all of the ways to enjoy ourselves this summer, and we hope that you are, too!

DID YOU KNOW? June 19 marks Juneteenth, a celebration of the day in 1865 when word of Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation — which had been signed two years prior and freed all enslaved people — made its way to Texas. Juneteenth is a day for African Americans to honor their culture and heritage, and for all of us to learn more about the realities of our history. Learn more about this historic day and how your family can celebrate, at indyschild. com/celebrate-juneteenthwith-your-kids/.

WORDS BY STEFFY MCCOURT
Rose & Lois Rose & Lois is a dream for coffee enthusiasts with littles. The café features indoor and outdoor seating, an entertaining children’s play area and a drive-thru window. Their mission is to “inspire, uplift, and bring delight to humanity through the vehicle of exceptionally crafted beverages served with promptness in a clean and beautiful setting.” Rachel Priddy, owner of Rose & Lois, left her corporate job and put almost everything on the line to fulfill her dream of opening a café. “I started Rose & Lois because I wanted more flexibility between my work and home life,” Priddy says. “I had just given birth to our second a month before I started dreaming about opening a coffee shop. Early on in the process, I dove into my ‘why,’ and it was because of my daughters Anna Lois and Amberlee Rose, and this sparked the name of our business.”
Final construction of Rose & Lois coincided with Governor Holcomb’s order to close restaurants in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Priddy was devastated. Luckily, they were able to continue operating because of their drivethru window, which officially opened on March 19, 2020. In May 2020, they were able to open their doors. Priddy has worked hard to create a space that is inviting to families. In addition to the play area, there are events that introduce children to food and science, sometimes both at the same time. There are also plenty of healthy and tasty menu items for kids, including lunch cups like veggies and hummus, vegan nuggets, cheese sticks, locally made granola bars and more. Hand pies, cookies and baked goods made by local eateries are also available, as is their popular Milk and Cookie Flight with three different flavored milks to dunk your cookies. 7249 E 146th St #110, Carmel roseandlois.com

WORDS BY KIMBERLY HARMS, THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS
Help Kids Grow Strong Through Exercise It’s important for little ones to focus their energy on activities that will help them build gross motor skills — movements of large muscles like the arms, legs and torso. Gross motor skills help the body hold position and coordinate large muscles. Those movements then help hold the body steady so the child can accomplish fine motor movements. For example, a toddler learns to sit or stand first, and then they use fine motor skills to stack a set of blocks. Dr. Sarah Bosslet, a pediatrician with Riley Children’s Health, says that these movements complement each other and help with overall development. “Children’s brains develop rapidly, and during that rapid growth, it is crucial to ensure they have the opportunity to use and develop all of their muscles,” she says.
Bosslet suggests encouraging children to participate in 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous activity each day because it increases blood flow through the body, which is crucial to healthy development of the heart, lungs, bones and brain. Physical activity should be fun so children will stay engaged and committed to it.
forms of exercise. Whatever the activity, it should be something fun that also helps burn energy. Sports provide an incredible opportunity to teach valuable life lessons and promote social and emotional learning. Through the museum’s partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, all of the museum’s coaches are certified Double-Goal coaches, which acknowledge that winning is important, but it is more important to learn life lessons through sports.
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is helping by introducing Preschool Muscle Movers. “This program provides an opportunity to get moving with your little ones in fun ways that encourage them to embrace high energy, so they can better focus on productive things, warm-up their core muscles by flying like a superhero and discover exercises that target the gross motor skills,” says Caleb Bailey, director of Sports Legends Experience. If you’re stuck inside due to weather, here are suggestions for ways to encourage your little one to exercise.
Use masking tape, mark spots on the floor for long jumps, hopscotch and reach and stretch activities. Don’t let the ball touch the ground; bounce it around from person to person like a volleyball game without a net. Create an indoor obstacle course or tennis match by using a balloon and a piece of cardboard to toss it around. Play cornhole in the basement. Dance parties and hikes are also great
Parents can help children develop positive self-esteem. Instead of asking, “Did you win? How many points/goals did you score?” Ask things like, “Did you give it your all? What did you learn today? Did you have fun? What can we improve next time?” If a child is struggling, adults can encourage them with comments like, “I enjoy playing with you. I really like how you approached the ball. That was a strong kick. Mistakes are OK. That is how we learn. Let's try again.”

kNot Today
Colts coach Frank Reich and his wife, Linda, stand against child exploitation with their Indianapolis-based organization. therapist in comfortable settings that would enable them to start the restoration process,” Linda says. “Seventy percent of the building’s construction labor, materials and time were donated by Indianapolis subcontractors. We connected with Compass Construction locally and a national organization called Eight Days of Hope, and the local Indianapolis community, of which we had many, many wonderful organizations and corporations who donated.” The building now serves as kNot Today’s national headquarters, and also program space for local non-profit Ascent 121.
Frank and Linda Reich are passionate about what they do. Together, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and his wife created kNot Today, an organization directing more awareness and prevention to the sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking of children, and the necessity of restoration programs for those who have experienced this trauma. The “knot” in the organization’s name symbolizes the untying of the knot of a sexual predator’s manipulation that the children are caught up in, says Linda. She explains that crimes against children happen in all communities, at all socioeconomic levels. “Even though Indiana isn’t a border state, it isn’t an exception,” Linda says. “Throughout our time in the NFL, Coach and I have had the opportunity to travel from coast to coast and see, through community involvement and service, that the problem of children sexual abuse and exploitation is an issue effecting our entire country. We decided to utilize our platform and finances to make an impact in this space.” Arriving in Indianapolis, Linda and Frank met with a nonprofit organization offering trauma recovery care for teen survivors of trafficking. “We are not a direct service provider,” Linda says.

“But our organization functions as a connector bringing about awareness, initiating prevention strategies, and helping organizations — anyone who can possibly help prevent child sexual abuse and trauma. We want to be the umbrella organization and platform for allocating funding and support, and asking, ‘Where is the greatest need, and how can we help?’” Eager to help in any way they could, the Reichs asked what the dream list of items needed in a program space would be for the local service provider. Thus, in October 2020, kNot Today dedicated a 17,000 square foot building on the far Eastside of Indianapolis, which they purchased and completely renovated top to bottom. “We said,
if we are going to do this, we want to do it excellently to make the greatest impact to help children,” Linda says. Everything in the structure is state of the art. “We have de-escalation rooms, dance rooms, yoga center rooms and playrooms. We wanted to make a safe space for children to share their experience with their
As the pandemic finally begins to wane, the Reichs are very encouraged to see the building coming to life so that children can be healed. “We are trying to make Indianapolis and Indiana shining stars in putting a stop to this tragedy against our nation’s children,” Linda says. kNot Today continues to work to spread awareness and create prevention initiatives in order to Protect the Beauty and Innocence of Childhood.

Natural cheeses such as Cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, and Swiss contain minimal amounts of lactose, because most of the lactose is removed when the curds are separated from the whey in the cheese making process.

Summer Concerts and Movies Return to Indy Parks Warmer weather and sunnier days are a sign that summer is upon us. After a year of virtual learning and working from home, a lot of us are feeling the itch to get outside, stretch our legs and get a little bit closer to life as normal. Just in time for summer, Indy Parks is bringing back one of our favorite summer traditions: our Summer Concert and Movie Series!
From May through September, we’re bringing 60 shows to six parks across Indianapolis. Kick back to the sounds of jazz at Eagle Creek Park’s Beach, or dance around to alternative rock at Garfield Park’s MacAllister Amphitheater. Whatever your music style, we guarantee there’s something in this year’s lineup that the whole family will love. Several local artists are taking the stages this summer, including Joshua Powell, the Tiptonian and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra.
In addition to music, we’re also playing some family-favorite movies at Garfield Park this summer, including Moana and Aladdin (2019). It’s a perfect chance to shake up your usual family movie night routine and make some new memories.

Local Spotlight: Concerts for a Cause This Indy non-profit helps Hoosier charities through music and donations.
With 15 concerts under their belt, Concerts for a Cause has donated $250,000 to 15 different nonprofit organizations in Indianapolis.
In 2015, Bruce Kidd and co-founder Steve Neely decided to combine their love of live music and passion for nonprofits in Indiana. Both on the board for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, they planned a small thank-you evening for supporters of the cause with live music, food and fun. That was the beginning of Concerts for a Cause, a nonprofit that supports other Indy-area nonprofits by putting on performances by national and local artists and musicians. Indy’s Child talked to Bruce Kidd to learn more about this organization.
How did you come up with the idea for Concerts for a Cause? “As we were leaving [the special event], Steve and I said ‘Maybe we could do this for other nonprofits,’” Kidd says. “I’ve been on several of those boards with really good people, working hard for other people that need help in our community. Financially, they struggle every year.” The two set to work, securing entertainment, food donations and sponsorships for their first pilot concert. They picked a nonprofit, The Indy Thunder, invited their network of friends and waited to see what would happen. “We didn’t know how many people would show up, but it worked,” Kidd says. “We were able to raise $7,500 for this group of adults who are blind or seriously sight

What keeps people coming back? “I’ve been here my whole life, and this is a very compassionate community,” Kidd says. “The whole idea is ‘How many lives can we touch through this donation?’ We have people coming to support their favorite non-profit, others are just looking for a good evening of entertainment, some know the artist of the evening and most believe in what we’re doing here.”
impaired, and participate in a national league called a beep baseball team.”
What’s the plan for 2021?
How many concerts do you host a year? “We do four concerts per year,” Kidd says. “That first year, Steve and I did everything. We contacted caterers, had a local company donate beer and wine, and found different artists across the country. These are really cool, fun, talented people, and once you connect with one, they suggest someone they know and it gets pretty easy to find entertainment.” Sponsors cover the artists fee, food, drink and other supplies needed, and the total ticket sales go directly to the non-profit of the evening.
What do attendees experience? “I want these concerts to feel like a concert in your living room,” Kidd says. “If you’re in the last row, you’re still only 25 feet from the stage.” “We introduce a local Indy artist to open the show. We then ask the non-profit executive director to talk about the organization and we present them with a check. Then we bring on the main artist of the evening. At the first concert, we raised $7,500, and that’s grown now to $20,000 to $25,000 going to the non-profit.”
“We’re doing as many outdoor concerts as possible so we can spread out, wear masks and take all sanitation precautions. I finally decided I’m going to pick a date and we’ll see what happens. The first concert is June 25, and we have four scheduled for this year, including August 27, September 25 and November 5.” Concerts for a Cause will celebrate its five-year anniversary at the November concert, with three national artists and three children’s non-profits. Visit indyconcertsforacause.org for concert updates and scheduled venues. Tickets are currently on sale for the June concert.
PARENTING
WORDS BY AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION
Take Camp Skills to School Millions of parents chose camp for their child or teen because of the immense benefits of the experience. Not only does camp foster making new friends and learning 21st century life skills like independence, problem-solving and teamwork, but it’s also fun! As the summer fades and children return to school, here are a few helpful hints to remind parents to pack a few extra items from camp in the school backpack:
• Confidence: All through the camp experience, children and youth have tried new activities and been successful; they feel empowered. • Curiosity: Camp has given children and youth the chance to explore, study, and observe in an experiential learning environment. • Character: Camp has challenged children and youth to develop character — through fostering respect for each other, a sense of community, and the ability to solve problems.
How can parents help transfer these skills into the classroom? American Camp Association suggests the following tips: • Remember to Remind: When campers come home, they often keep the spirit of camp alive for a week or two, and then things trail off. Use positive reinforcement to remind campers that you appreciate the positive attitude and willingness to help that they developed at camp. • Become Camp-Like: Families can set the example by demonstrating a willingness to change something at home in order to sustain some of the changes campers have made. Bob Ditter, a clinical social worker and psychotherapist, suggests,

“Parents have to make a decision. Are they willing to change something in their practice at home in order to sustain some of the changes their kids have made, such as having a job wheel that you put up on the wall outlining chores?” • Everyone Gets a Say: At camp, children help determine how their day is spent. Their advice is actively sought, and they feel like equal players. Emulating this environment at home allows them to continue to stand up for themselves and feel like a contributing member of the household.
• Avoid the Negative Compliment: Don’t inadvertently sabotage efforts by pointing out differences in behavior. Instead of saying, “you never did this before,” praise the behaviors in a genuine way. For example, “I noticed how patient you were with your little brother.”
