artano merita l’attenzione che le si dedica con questo nuovo lavoro. È una città in continua crescita, in continuo rinnovamento ma mantiene intatte le sue qualità tradizionali che le hanno affidato il ruolo di guida riconosciuta dell’area grika. La consapevole e diligente modestia del lavoro quotidiano, la dignità e l’orgoglio dei suoi artigiani e dei suoi imprenditori, la tensione verso l’utile sociale dei suoi intellettuali e delle sue classi dirigenti più illuminate, la cura per il suo rilevante patrimonio artistico ed il decoro delle nuove realizzazioni, l’attenzione per i servizi alla popolazione, in primo luogo quelli per l’istruzione e la salute, per le persone anziane o disagiate o a rischio, la generosa e benevola accoglienza per i visitatori ed i forestieri, testimoniata da dotti resoconti di illustri e colti viaggiatori quanto dal genuino entusiasmo di attenti turisti e spensierate scolaresche, il suo fiorente mercato settimanale, il successo delle fiere e delle sagre e l’eccellenza delle sue strutture ricettive e di ristorazione, l’hanno portata nei secoli a meritare il titolo letterario di capitale della Grecìa Salentina e, più recentemente, quello formale di Città.

artano deserves to be highlighted by this new book.

It is a constantly growing town, although has kept untouched its traditions: that is the reason why Martano has been recognized as guide of the Griko area.

The care of the humble and honest daily work, the dignity and pride of its craftsmen and businessmen, the focus on social needs by its most enlightened highbrows and ruling classes, the preservation of its huge art heritage and the decoration of the new buildings, the attention for the services used by people among whom health and education services and those for the oldest and poorest population, the warm welcome to tourists and strangers that is underlined in the reports of well-read and famous travellers as well as in the enthusiastic feedback of visitors and students, its flourishing weekly market, the successful country fairs and festivals, the excellence of its hotels and restaurants: thanks to all these essential elements Martano has gained the title of ‘capital of the Grecia Salentina’ and, recently, that of ‘Città’(City).

ο Μαρτάνο αξίζει την προσοχή που του αφιερρώνει το νέο αυτό έργο. Είναι μια πόλη σε συνεχή αύξηση, σε συνεχή ανανέωση ταυτόχρονα όμως κρατά άθικτες τις παραδοσιακές της αξίες που την κατέστησαν αναγνωρισμένο ηγέτη στο χώρο της ελληνόφωνης περιοχής. l presente volume si inserisce ed arricchisce una già ampia letteratura intesa ad analizzare e valorizzare il patrimonio storico, artistico e architettonico del comune di Martano. Mi riferisco, in particolare, agli ultimi due volumi pubblicati: La Iovila di Martano di Donato Saracino (2010), interessante e sottile ricerca, nel tentativo riuscito di ricostruire un mondo culturale ormai scomparso, fortemente influenzato da culti e tradizioni religiose, e Per palazzi e antiche strade di Paolo Protopapa (2012), altrettanto interessante riuscita ricostruzione della memoria collettiva dei luoghi, mediante un itinerario storico-artistico, animato da storie e leggende raccontate in versi che ne conferiscono una piacevole originalità. Viene ora alla luce una nuova pubblicazione su Martano, scritta da Serena Orlando, corredata da splendide riproduzioni fotografiche che si susseguono in una suggestiva galleria di immagini del patrimonio storico e artistico della nostra città.

Il volume porta all’attenzione del lettore anche novità e cambiamenti del tessuto urbano, che stimolano alcuni spunti di riflessione sulla nostra storia cittadina dell’ultimo quarto del secolo scorso. Quel periodo ha

T

his book is part of a wide literature aimed at analyzing and enhancing the historic, artistic and architectural heritage of the town of Martano.

I refer in particular to the two recently published books: La Iovila di Martano by Donato Saracino (2010), an interesting study that reconstructs the ancient rural world strongly influenced by religion, and Per palazzi e antiche strade (Through palaces and ancient roads) by Paolo Protopapa (2012), another interesting historical and artistic reconstruction of the places, written thanks to the people’s memories, into an original narration in verse of their tales and legends.

Now we can see the birth of a new publication about Martano, written

by Serena Orlando, and embellished with a wonderful sequence of pictures showing the historic and artistic heritage of our town.

This book also highlights the urban changes which involved Martano and its history in the last quarter of the 20th century. That period saw the birth of a new general consciousness as well as a new ruling class aiming to make social and economic changes that have been realized thanks to a different cultural and po-

Συγκεκριμένα, αναφέρομαι, στα δύο τελευταία βιβλία που έχουν κυκλοφορήσει: το «Η Ιοβίλα του Μαρτάνου» (La Iovila di Martano) του Donato Saracino (2010), ενδιαφέρουσα και λεπτομερής μελέτη μιας επιτυχημένης προσπάθειας να αναπαρασταθεί μια πολιτισμική κοινωνία που πλέον έχει λησμονηθεί, επηρεασμένη σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τις λατρείες και τις θρησκευτικές δοξασίες, και το «Για τα αρχοντικά και τις αρχαίες οδούς» (Per palazzi e antiche strade) του Paolo Protopapa (2012), εξίσου ενδιαφέρουσα και επιτυχής ανασυγκρότηση της συλλογικής μνήμης των χώρων και των τόπων, ενός ιστορικού και καλλιτεχνικού οδοιπορικού, που ζωντανεύει μέσα από έμμετρες ιστορίες και θρύλους, που προσδίδουν μια ευχάριστη γνησιότητα και απλότητα. segnato la nascita e la maturazione di una nuova coscienza collettiva e di una nuova classe dirigente, che ha avvertito per intero la necessità di individuare un progetto di forte cambiamento in campo socio-economico, nonché un nuovo e diverso approccio culturale e politico al fine di realizzarlo. È stato così che la nostra città ha recuperato la sua centralità sul territorio e ha cessato di essere unicamente un centro a prevalente economia rurale, con forte vocazione artigianale, per divenire un nuovo

litical approach. Our town has thus regained a key role within the neighbouring area and has become a focal point that offers several services, not only in the rural and craft fields.

That period saw the beginning of my political career: a time characterized by strong differences between the parties and great ideals leaning towards the development of our town. I am proud to have taken part in the growth of our area along with friends and opponents, all acting in the interests of our town.

Η περίοδος αυτή σηματοδότησε τη γέννηση και την ωρίμανση μιας νέας συλλογικής συνείδησης και μιας νέας άρχουσας τάξης, η οποία αισθάνθηκε την ανάγκη να καταστρώσει από την

È in quel periodo che ho iniziato la mia attività di impegno politico: una stagione caratterizzata da forti contrapposizioni partitiche e grande tensione ideale con al centro lo sviluppo e la centralità della nostra città. Questo è anche il periodo che ho l’onore di aver vissuto come protagonista, insieme con altri amici e avversari che hanno sempre condiviso le ragioni della crescita del territorio e trovato una sintesi ed un impegno condiviso per raggiungere gli obiettivi, nell’interesse esclusivo della città.

Proprio in quegli anni sono diventati realtà il Distretto scolastico, con la realizzazione dell’Istituto comprensivo (con i vari indirizzi professionale, commerciale, scientifico e classico), la nascita della Asl e la costruzione del Poliambulatorio (ora struttura di avanguardia della sanità pugliese) e il Centro per l’impiego. Sono risultati che hanno consentito di ottenere, nel periodo in cui ero Sindaco, il conferimento del titolo di Città da parte del Presidente della repubblica Francesco Cossiga. Sono anche gli anni in cui si è ridisegnato il futuro della Città, con un nuovo progetto urbanistico, frutto di un grande confronto tra tutte le forze politiche delle realtà socio-economiche presenti. È sempre in questo clima di forti motivazioni e di genuina competi-

Important goals were reached during the same period: the School District, with the creation of the Comprehensive School (including the Professional School, the Commercial School, the College of Science and the Grammar School), the ASL (Local Health Authority) together with the Health Care Centre which has become an avant-garde centre in Apulia, and the Job Centre. Thanks to these achievements Martano has obtained the title of ‘City’, given by the former President of the Republic Francesco Cossiga when I served as mayor of the town. Those years also reshaped the future of Martano through a new urban project realized with the support of all the different socio-economic forces on the political stage.

Important cultural initiatives were born in the same period: Agorà (an Italian-Greek exhibition established by the mayor of the time Donato Saracino), and the Biennale di Scultura (Sculpture Biennale) set up by the undersigned.

Those years clearly marked the society of Martano and roused the pride in our cultural identity. The Griko language, the oil mills, our habits and traditions, local dances and songs make a comeback and glow with a bright light thanks to the unremitting political commitment.

As mayor, I focused firstly on our past, with the project of restructuring and enlarging the town cemetery (now almost done), in order to thank

Έτσι, λοιπόν, η πόλη μας ανέκτησε τη σπουδαιότητά της στην περιοχή και έπαψε να είναι αποκλειστικά και μόνο ένα κέντρο, όπου επικρατεί η αγροτική οικονομία, αλλά ένα ισχυρό βιοτεχνικό κέντρο, το οποίο θα εξελιχτεί σ’ ένα νέο πόλο υπηρεσιών και θα γίνει σταθερό σημείο αναφοράς για ολόκληρη την επικράτεια που το περιβάλλει. Ακριβώς εκείνη την εποχή άρχισα την πολιτική μου καριέρα: μια εποχή που χαρακτηρίζεται από έντονες κομματικές αντιπαραθέσεις και μεγάλες ιδεολογικές εντάσεις με θέμα την ανάπτυξη και την ανάδειξη της σπουδαιότητας της κεντρικής θέσης της πόλης μας. Αυτή είναι επίσης και η χρονική περίοδος, που έχω την τιμή να την έχω ζήσει ως πρωταγωνιστής, μαζί με άλλους φίλους και αντιπάλους, που πάντα συμμερίστηκαν τους λόγους για την ανάπτυξη της περιοχής και πέτυχαν μια συμφωνία και μια κοινή δέσμευση για την επίτευξη των στόχων, προς το αποκλειστικό συμφέρον της πόλης. Στα ίδια ακριβώς χρόνια λειτούργησαν το Περιφερειακό Γραφείο Εκπαίδευσης και τα Ινστιτούτα 1οβάθμιας και 2οβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης σε κοινή Διεύθυνση και διαφορετικές κατευθύνσεις (επαγγελματική, εμπορική, επιστημονική και κλασική), συστάθηκε η Περιφερειακή Διεύθυνση Υγείας και κατασκευάστηκε το Κέντρο Υγείας

Donato Saracino) e la Biennale di scultura (ideata e voluta dal sottoscritto). È un periodo che ha lasciato un segno tangibile nella società martanese e che ha avuto il merito di risvegliare sentimenti di orgoglio della nostra identità culturale. È anche lo spazio temporale che ha conferito all’impegno politico la sua ragion d’essere: il griko, i frantoi ipogei, le nostre tradizioni, i nostri costumi, i nostri canti e balli tornano d’incanto alla ribalta e risplendono di nuova luce. È stato così che, da Sindaco, ho rivolto prima un’attenzione particolare alla nostra storia passata, riportando a nuova monumentalità il cimitero comunale, con un nuovo progetto di risistemazione e di ampliamento (ormai quasi interamente realizzato), ad onore e gloria dei nostri antenati per il patrimonio che ci hanno lasciato in eredità. È stato così che, in questa euforica atmosfera intrisa di sano spirito costruttivo, ho altresì coltivato il sogno di impreziosire le piazzette e gli spazi pubblici con opere d’arte, con l’intendimento di realizzare un museo all’aperto, grazie alla fattiva collaborazione di artisti salentini ormai affermati a livello nazionale. È nata così la Biennale di scultura: un’idea e un progetto per dare nuovo lustro alla città, facendola divenire città d’arte.

and honor our ancestors for the great heritage they passed down. In the same lively atmosphere filled with positive and productive feelings, I also decided to embellish squares and public areas with works of art, thus realizing a sort of open-air museum with the help of local artists who are nationally renowned. The Biennale di Scultura is the tangible expression of this idea: a project aimed at bringing prestige to Martano by making it città d’arte (a city of art).

Such an important project obviously needed the redevelopment of the interested places through the reintroduction of the basolato (paving with large stones called basoli) and an appropriate lighting of the historic buildings. So, a new urban fabric for a new image of the town. This prestigious creative project, realized to improve and enhance our town, has been represented in this book through the pictures (the so-called fontane) by Pignatelli, De Filippi, Marrocco, Gravier: these images lead to feelings and memories I’d like to share with our readers.

Today, while admiring the redesigned and totally renovated ‘Assunta Square’, I rediscover the enthusiasm of those years and I feel happy to cooperate with the present mayor Massimo Coricciati and with the Administration for the relaunch of the project. Both the art heritage we have inherited and our own cultural identity deserve to be consistently valued.

Οι επιτεύξεις αυτές μας επέτρεψαν να αποκτήσει ο Δήμος του Μαρτάνου, σε μια εποχή που ήμουν Δήμαρχος, τον τίτλο της Πόλης από τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας Francesco Cossiga. Αυτά ήταν επίσης τα χρόνια κατά τα οποία ξανασχεδιάστηκε το μέλλον της πόλης μας με ένα νέο πολεοδομικό σχέδιο, καρπός μιας μεγάλης αντιπαράθεσης μεταξύ όλων των πολιτικών δυνάμεων της κοινωνικο-οικονομικής πραγματικότητας. Και πάντα μέσα σε αυτό το κλίμα των υψηλών προκλήσεων και της γνήσιας ανταγωνιστικότητας ξεπήδησαν νέες, σημαντικές πολιτιστικές πρωτοβουλίες: η Αγορά (Ιταλο-ελληνική Έκθεση-Αγορά, που οργανώθηκε από τον τότε Δήμαρχο, κ. Donato Saracino) και η Μπιενάλε (Biennale) Γλυπτικής (που συνέλαβε και υλοποίησε ο υπογράφων). Είναι μια περίοδος που άφησε απτά σημάδια στην κοινωνία του Μαρτάνου και είχε την αξία της: να ξυπνήσει συναισθήματα υπερηφάνειας για την πολιτιστική μας ταυτότητα. Είναι, επίσης, η χρονική περίοδος που προσέδωσε στην πολιτική τον ουσιώδη λόγο της ύπαρξης της: Τα Γκραικάνικα (il Griko), τα ελαιοτριβεία, οι παραδόσεις μας, τα έθιμα μας, τα τραγούδια και οι χοροί μας ξαναεπιστρέφουν με τη γοητεία τους στο προσκήνιο για να ξαναλάμψουν μ’ ένα νέο φως. Γι ‘αυτό, ως Δήμαρχος, επέδειξα εξαρχής, ιδιαίτερη προσοχή στο παρελθόν της ιστορίας μας, προσδίδοντας

Ovviamente, un tale progetto doveva essere completato con la riqualificazione dei luoghi mediante il ritorno all’utilizzo delle pavimentazioni con basoli e con un adeguato progetto illuminotecnico degli edifici storici. Insomma, un nuovo arredo urbano per una nuova immagine della città. È questo un progetto che rappresenta un prestigioso percorso artistico realizzato per la valorizzazione della città, che le splendide foto delle opere di Pignatelli, De Filippi, Marrocco, Gravier presenti nel volume, le cosiddette fontane, fanno rivivere, stimolando emozioni e ricordi che ho sentito il bisogno di trasmettere ai lettori. È così che oggi, ammirando la nuova piazza Assunta, riprogettata e completamente rigenerata, ritrovo l’entusiasmo di quegli anni e la spinta ideale a collaborare con l’Amministrazione e il Sindaco, Massimo Coricciati, con l’entusiasmo di rilanciare quel progetto. Il patrimonio artistico che abbiamo ereditato e la nostra identità culturale meritano una continuità d’impegno per la loro massima valorizzazione. L’ormai prossima riqualificazione di via Trinchese e piazzetta Matteotti, inserite in una visione progettuale unitaria, che comprende anche largo Santa Sofia e via Catumerea, unitamente a via degli Uffici e via Marconi (il nostro ring, per chi conosce Vienna), è un progetto ambizioso che vale la pena di realizzare, per rendere la nostra

One of the next ambitious objectives is the re-qualification of via Trinchese and piazzetta Matteotti (square Matteotti), in addition to Largo Santa Sofia, via Catumerea, via degli Uffici and via Marconi (our ring, for those who know Vienna): another step in making Martano more and more appealing.

You just need to immerse yourself in the reading of this book to catch the whole beauty of this town. The old town centre is great to wander around and get lost in the wonderful alleys full of engraved stone balconies and odd Baroque and Rococo portals with their facades. I heartily recommend a visit to the ‘Parco di Apigliano’ - a medieval Byzantine village uncovered by the excavations of the archaeologist Paul Arthur.

Tourists can then reach the Monastery of Santa Maria della Consolazione (with the interesting art gallery and the rich library) where its secular olive trees and the profound silence of the Cistercians create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

έναν νέο μνημειακό χαρακτήρα στο δημοτικό νεκροταφείο, υλοποιώντας ένα καινούριο σχέδιο αναδιοργάνωσης, αποκατάστασης και επέκτασης του (υλοποιημένο σχεδόν εξ ολοκλήρου), υπέρ της τιμής και της δόξας των προγόνων μας και της πολιτιστικής περιουσίας που μας κληροδότησαν. Σε αυτό το κλίμα ευφορίας, διαποτισμένο από υγιές εποικοδομητικό πνεύμα, προήγαγα την ιδέα της διακόσμησης και του εξωραϊσμού των πλατείων και των δημοσίων χώρων με έργα τέχνης, με σκοπό να δημιουργηθεί ένα υπαίθριο μουσείο, και αυτό επιτεύχθη χάρη στην αποτελεσματική συνεργασία με καλλιτέχνες από το Σαλέντο, που είχαν πλέον καθιερωθεί σε εθνικό επίπεδο. Έτσι γεννήθηκε η Μπιενάλε γλυπτικής: μια ιδέα και ένα σχέδιο για να προσδώσω μια νέα λάμψη στην πόλη μας, καθιστώντας την μια πόλη της τέχνης. Φυσικά, ένα τέτοιο έργο θα έπρεπε να ολοκληρωθεί με την ανάπλαση των χώρων και τη χρήση των ηφαιστειογενών κυβόλιθων (ειδικών πλακών) στις πλακοστρώσεις και με επαρκή φωτισμό των ιστορικών κτηρίων. Με λίγα λόγια, ένας νέος αστικός καλλωπισμός της νέας εικόνας της πόλης μας. Πρόκειται για ένα έργο που αντικατοπτρίζει μια αναγνωρισμένου κύρους καλλιτεχνική πορεία, που πραγματοποιήθηκε για την προβολή της πόλης μας, που με τις όμορφες εικόνες των έργων των Pignatelli, De Filippi, Marrocco, Gravier που παρουσιάζονται στο βιβλίο, τα γνωστά συντριβάνια (fontane), ξαναζωντανεύουν και διεγείρουν συ-

Tornando a questa pubblicazione, non resta che perdersi nel meraviglioso centro storico, con le sue stradine, ricche di splendidi balconi, ammirando la stravaganza barocca dei portali e delle facciate che vi prospettano. Consiglio vivamente, infine, una visita al Parco di Apigliano (un villaggio bizantino e medievale venuto alla luce con gli scavi del valente archeologo Paul Arthur) e, a conclusione di questo suggestivo itinerario, una visita al Monastero cistercense di Santa Maria della Consolazione (con l’interessantissima pinacoteca e la ricchissima biblioteca), per vivere un momento magico di grande spiritualità, in un ambiente intriso di religioso silenzio.

Έτσι σήμερα, θαυμάζοντας την καινούρια Πλατεία Ασσούντα (Piazza Assunta), πλήρως επανασχεδιασμένη και ανακαινισμένη, ξαναβρίσκω τον ενθουσιασμό εκείνων των χρόνων και την όρεξη να συνεργαστώ με τη δημοτική αρχή και τον Δήμαρχο, Massimo Coricciati για την επανεκκίνηση και την αναβίωση εκείνου του έργου. Η καλλιτεχνική κληρονομιά, που έχουμε κληρονομήσει, και η πολιτιστική ταυτότητά μας αξίζουν του συνεχούς ενδιφέροντός μας για την επίτευξη, στο μέγιστο βαθμό, της αξιοποίησής τους. Η προσεχής ανάπλαση της οδού Trinchese και της μικρής πλατείας Matteotti, περιλαμβάνονται σε έναν ενιαίο, συνολικό σχεδιασμό, που περικλείει επίσης τη μικρή πλατεία Santa Sofia (Αγία Σοφία), την οδό Catumerea, που μαζί με την οδούς Uffici και Marconi (το δικό μας δακτύλιο, για όσους γνωρίζουν τη Βιέννη), είναι ένα φιλόδοξο έργο, που αξίζει να το υλοποιήσουμε, ώστε να

H

o visitato Martano per la prima volta nel 1993, quando ero Console Generale della Grecia a Napoli.

In quella occasione ho conosciuto il Presidente del Consiglio Scolastico Distrettuale, Luigi Orlando, e la sua famiglia: sua moglie Maria Assunta e la sua piccola figlia Serena. Da allora, sono seguite numerose mie visite nella regione.

Chi avrebbe detto allora che dopo venti anni sarebbe giunto il momento di presentare il libro della piccola Serena su Martano, che testimonia la sua grande attenzione per la cultura del luogo di origine, ereditata dai suoi genitori.

Con suo padre abbiamo avviato l’insegnamento della lingua Neogreca all’interno di un programma che abbiamo denominato “metodo comparativo per l’insegnamento della lingua neogreca e dell’idioma griko”.

Contemporaneamente sono arrivati i primi insegnanti dalla Grecia.

Se questa ardita iniziativa ha avuto successo (ad un certo punto gli alunni che frequentavano i corsi di lingua neogreca erano ben 1.500), gran parte del merito va attribuita al dott. Luigi Orlando che, grazie al

y first visit to Martano goes back to 1993, when I was Consul General of Greece in Naples.

In that occasion I knew the President of the District School Board, Luigi Orlando, and his family: his wife Maria Assunta and their little daughter Serena. Since then, I have visited the region several times.

Who would have thought that twenty years later I could present the work of that little girl Serena from Martano.

The book shows her great attention to the culture she belongs to, an attitude inherited from her own parents.

Luigi Orlando and me started the teaching of the neo-Greek language within the programme called ‘comparative method for the teaching of the neo-Greek language and the Griko idiom’. In the meanwhile, the first teachers from Greece arrived.

This courageous initiative has been so successful mainly thanks to Luigi Orlando - there was a period when the students of the neo-Greek language reached 1,500. His position in public administration, together with his skillful work, kindness, personality and culture, allowed him to overcome the bureaucracy and organization obstacles inside each innovative project

ια πρώτη φορά επισκέφθηκα το Μartano το 1993 όταν ήμουν Γενικός Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στη Νάπολη. Μεταξύ αυτών που γνώρισα ήταν και ο Πρόεδρος της Σχολικής Επιτροπής του τοπικού διαμερίσματος Luigi Orlando και η οικογένειά του, την σύζυγό του Maria Assunta και την μικρή του κόρη Serena. Από τότε ακολούθησαν πολλές επισκέψεις μου στην περιοχή. Ποιος θα το έλεγε όμως ότι μετά από 20 χρόνια θα έφθανε η στιγμή που θα προλόγιζα το βιβλίο της μικρής Serena για το Martano, που δείχνει το μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον της για τον πολιτισμό του τόπου καταγωγής της που κληρονόμησε από τους γονείς της. Με τον πατέρα της ξεκινήσαμε τη διδασκαλία της νεοελληνικής γλώσσας, που την εντάξαμε σε ένα πρόγραμμα που ονομάσαμε «συγκριτική μέθοδος διδασκαλίας της νεοελληνικής και του ιδιώματος», οπότε και έφθασαν οι πρώτοι δάσκαλοι από την Ελλάδα. Εάν αυτή η τολμηρή και ίσως ριψοκίνδυνη πρωτοβουλία είχε θετικό αποτέλεσμα (σε κάποια στιγμή οι μαθητές που παρακολουθούσαν μαθήματα νεοελληνικής έφθασαν τον αριθμό των 1500) ένα μεγάλο μέρος της επιτυχίας θα πρέπει να αποδοθεί στον Dr. Luigi

ruolo che occupava nell’Istruzione Pubblica, con un sapiente lavoro, la sua gentilezza, la sua personalità e la sua cultura, riuscì a superare i numerosi ostacoli di ordine burocratico e organizzativo, che ogni innovazione comporta, ed ad assicurare al progetto di ridare dignità e lustro all’antica lingua grika un risultato ben superiore ad ogni attesa.

Inoltre, insieme al caro amico Luigi Orlando, abbiamo proposto con successo l’idea dell’unione dei comuni ellenofoni con l’obiettivo di promuovere e sostenere le iniziative culturali per la salvaguardia e la diffusione della lingua e della cultura della Grecìa Salentina. La realizzazione di questo progetto era difficile perché i sindaci appartenevano a coalizioni politiche differenti. Ciò nonostante, è stato attuato, prima come associazione, dopo come consorzio ed alla fine come unione.

In particolare, nell’ottobre 2010, ho avuto la gioia e l’onore di inaugurare nel Palazzo Ducale di Martano i nuovi uffici dell’Unione dei Comuni Ellenofoni della Regione Puglia da lui diretti, per cui ho incontrato, dopo anni, Serena. Sono veramente contento che la piccola Serena, ormai signorina, realizzi un altro progetto che avevamo elaborato con suo padre allora, nei primi anni: raccontare la storia di ogni paese della Grecìa Salentina e descriverne la sua vita quotidiana e lo sviluppo che aveva raggiunto con il passare degli anni

and has given a renewed dignity to the old Griko language.

Another great success we have achieved is the union of Griko-speaking municipalities, in order to promote and support the cultural initiatives aimed to preserve and spread both the culture and the language of the Grecia Salentina. The aforementioned union has been realized despite the mayors’ different political parties and views.

In October 2010 I was particularly glad and honored to inaugurate the new offices of the union of Griko-speaking municipalities inside the Palazzo Ducale in Martano.

In that occasion I met Serena after a long time. I am now really pleased to see Serena realizing another project which her father and I had thought about, since the first years of our collaboration: that is the story of the origin of each village in the Grecia Salentina, together with the description of the daily life and the progresses made over time.

Serena deals with her town Martano, by giving us an image of both its own past and present.

I wish this initiative will be followed by the other nearby villages of the Grecia Salentina, because it is what this area needs. This work will help people to better know the Grecia Salentina.

Orlando, χάρη και στη θέση που είχε τότε στη Δημόσια Εκπαίδευση. Μαζί με το πρόσφορο έργο του, την ευγένειά του, την προσωπικότητά του και τις γνώσεις του, ήταν σε θέση να βοηθήσει ώστε να ξεπεραστούν τα γραφειοκρατικά και οργανωτικά εμπόδια που παρουσιάζει κάθε καινοτομία, εξασφαλίζοντας την επιτυχία με το πρόγραμμα αυτό για την αποκατάσταση του κύρους της γλώσσας του Γκρίκο. Ακόμη μαζί με τον αγαπητό φίλο Luigi Orlando προωθήσαμε με επιτυχία μία σκέψη για ενοποίηση των ελληνοφώνων Δήμων, με στόχο την προβολή και υποστήριξη πολιτισμικών πρωτοβουλιών για τη διάσωση και διάδοση της γλώσσας και του πολιτισμού της Σαλεντικής Ελλάδας. Η υλοποίηση της ιδέας ήταν δύσκολη, γιατί όλοι οι δήμαρχοι δεν ανήκαν στον ίδιο πολιτικό χώρο. Παρόλα αυτά η ιδέα υλοποιήθηκε πρώτα ως Σύλλογος μετά ως Συνεταιρισμός και τέλος ως Ένωση. Μάλιστα τον Οκτώβριο του 2010 είχα τη χαρά και την τιμή να εγκαινιάσω τα νέα υπό την Δ/νση του Γραφεία

στο Δουκικό Παλάτι του Μartano, της Ένωσης των Ελληνοφώνων Δήμων της Περιφέρειας της Απουλίας, οπότε και συνάντησα μετά από χρόνια την Serena. Χαίρομαι ιδιαίτερα που η μικρή Serena, κοπέλα πια, πραγματοποιεί μια άλλη πρόταση και σκέψη που είχαμε κάνει με τον πατέρα της τότε, τα πρώτα χρόνια. Τη συγγραφή της ιστορίας του κάθε χωριού της Σαλεντινής Ελλάδας με τις ιδιαιτερότητες της καθημερινής ζωής και την ανάπτυξη που είχαν με το πέρασμα των ετών χωρίς όμως να ξεχνούν την καταγωγή τους. Η Serena ασχολείται με τη πόλη της, το Martano και μας δίνει μια εικόνα του χθες και του σήμερα. Εύχομαι η προσπάθεια αυτή να βρει και άλλους μιμητές στα γειτονικά χωρία της Σαλεντινής Ελλάδας, γιατί είναι κάτι που πραγματικά λείπει από την περιοχή. solenni festeggiamenti di Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo, veneratissima protettrice dei martanesi, si tengono ogni anno il 15 Agosto.

La festa dell’Assunta è da secoli la ricorrenza religiosa che gli abitanti della bella città ellenofona vivono con maggiore partecipazione.

Una conosciutissima poesia in lingua grika (Epài ce stèamo plònnonta/sto mero tu pornù….. Stavamo dormendo/verso l’alba…..) ricorda la miracolosa protezione concessa dalla Madonna dell’Assunta a tutti i martanesi durante il devastante uragano del 1686.

Nei difficili decenni del secondo dopoguerra caratterizzati dal fenomeno dell’emigrazione, in particolare verso la Svizzera e il Belgio, è stata l’occasione che gli emigranti coglievano per ritornare nelle loro case e ritrovare famigliari ed amici, portando in dono cioccolate, sigarette ed altri piccoli pensieri.

I festeggiamenti civili comprendono tutta la scenografia tipica delle più belle feste patronali salentine: la fiabesca illuminazione della piazza e delle vie adiacenti, realizzata da

he religious feast of Madonna dell’Assunta (Our Lady of Assumption), the patron saint of Martano’s inhabitants, takes place every year on August 15.

The participation to this important celebration of the Assumption has been high for centuries.

A well-known poetry in Griko (Epài ce stèamo plònnonta/sto mero tu pornù… We were sleeping/ at dawn…) reminds us of the miracle by Our Lady of the Assumption which saved the town of Martano and its inhabitants from the devastating hurricane of 1686 In the difficult decades after World War II, when migration towards Switzerland and Belgium was happening, this feast represented the only occasion for migrants to come back their homes and families, offering them chocolates, cigarettes and other small presents.

The civil celebration unfolds in the typical atmosphere of the most beautiful religious feasts in Salento.

ι επίσημοι πανηγυρισμοί της Παναχράντου Θεοτόκου Μαρίας. Αναληφθείσα στους ουρανούς, σεβαστή και προστάτιδα των κατοίκων του Μαρτάνο, τελούνται κάθε χρόνο στις 15 Αυγούστου. Η εορτή της Αναλήψεως είναι από αιώνες ο θρησκευτικός εορτασμός που οι κάτοικοι της όμορφης ελληνόφωνης πόλης ζουν με την μεγαλύτερη συμμετοχή. ‘Ένα πασίγνωστο ποίημα στη γκρίκα γλώσσα (Epài ce stèamo plònnonta/sto mero tu pornù….. βρισκόμαστε κοιμισμένοι …….. στις πρωινές ώρες της νύκτας….) ενθυμίζει την θαυματουργεί παρέμβαση της Παναγίας της Αναλήψεως σε όλους τους κατοίκους από τον καταστροφικό τυφώνα του 1686. Στις δύσκολες δεκαετίες μετά τον δεύτερο πόλεμο που χαρακτήριζε το φαινόμενο της μετανάστευσης, ιδιαίτερα προς την Ελβετία και το Βέλγιο, ήταν η ευκαιρία για τους μετανάστες να επιστρέφουν στα σπίτια τους και να ξαναβρίσκουν συγγενείς και φίλους, φέρνοντας ως δώρο σοκολάτες, τσιγάρα και διάφορα άλλα δωράκια.

The fair on Candlemas Day

La grande ed antichissima fiera della Candelora, che attirava mercanti e contadini da tutti i comuni del circondario per acquistare e vendere prodotti della terra e per la coltivazione dei campi, animali e svariate altre mercanzie, si svolgeva il 2 febbraio intorno alla Cappella della Candelora, attestata in una visita del vicario del Metropolita di Otranto nel 1522, che era situata sulla via vecchia per Lecce, fuori dall’abitato.

La fiera, probabile erede di antichi riti preliminari o di passaggio, portava con sé la speranza della imminente fine dell’inverno e di una nuova stagione di prosperità, come testimoniano questi vecchi proverbi:

On February the 2nd a great ancient fair used to take place on Candlemas Day around the so-called Candlemas Chapel, discovered in 1522 after a visit by the vicar of Otranto archbishop. This chapel was located on the ancient road to Lecce, outside the built-up area.

The fair was an important occasion for merchants and farmers, who came in large numbers to Martano from all the nearby villages to buy and sell their crops, animals and a variety of other products.

In pre-Christian times, this ancient festival of Candlemas marked the imminent end of the winter and the hope of a new season of prosperity, as these old proverbs tell us.

The obsessive rhythm of pizzica folk music is built around the insistent pounding of the tamburello frame drum together with the harmony of accordions and brass instruments, played by virtuoso musicians coming from different musical cultures. Sagra della Volìa Cazzata La Sagra della volìa cazzata (dell’oliva schiacciata) è la manifestazione gastronomica più attesa dell’autunno salentino.

Nata nel 1986 come festa sociale, all’interno del frantoio oleario della Cooperativa Agricola “Nuova Generazione” e concepita come sagra nel centro storico di Martano a partire dal 1989, con l’intento di valorizzare la ricca produzione olivicola ed olearia del territorio, ha conquistato sempre nuovi estimatori, fino ad obbligare gli organizzatori a spostarla in Largo Primo Maggio, uno spiazzo sufficientemente grande per ospitare le decine di migliaia di buongustai che la visitano ogni anno.

Il punto di forza più evidente della sagra è nella eccellente offerta culinaria: non solo olive schiacciate preparate secondo un’antichissima ricetta contadina (le olive vengono strappate dagli alberi ancora verdi, pochi giorni prima che assumano la striatura rosso-nerastra dell’avvio della maturazione, schiacciate a mano, addolcite in acqua corrente per quindici giorni ed in fine condite con sale prima di essere offerte gratuitamente ai visitatori), ma anche tanti gustosissimi piatti della tradizione grika, dalle cicoreddhe con i legumi alle pìttule, dai pezzetti di cavallo alla conserva di pomodoro al lesso di maiale, preparati rigorosamente secondo antiche ricette locali.

Η Γιορτή της Βολία κατσάτα (σπαστής ελιάς)

The Festival Sagra della volìa cazzata (crushed olive) is considered the most important autumn event in Salento from a commercial, economic and touristic point of view.

It was born in 1986 as a social festival held in the oil mill of the agricultural cooperative ‘New Generation’, but in 1989 it became a real sagra hosted in the old centre of Martano.

As the number of lovers has increased over the years, the event has been moved to Largo Primo Maggio, a big square that can welcome the thousands of visitors who appreciate its typical products every year.

The strength of the festival is represented by its several excellent dishes: not only the crushed olives prepared following a very old recipe - the olives are picked from the tree when they have not reached the right stage of ripeness yet, then hand crushed, stored in water for fifteen days and finally seasoned with salt before being served to visitors for free, but also a lot of different Griko dishes like the cicoreddhe (wild chicory) with legumes and the pittule (small balls of fried dough), the pezzetti di cavallo (pieces of horsemeat), the tomato sauce and the boiled pork meat, all cooked according to ancient recipes.

Η γιορτή της βολία κατσάτα (σπαστής ελιάς) είναι εκείνη η γαστρονομική εκδήλωση την οποία προσδοκά με πολλή χαρά πολύς κόσμος, κατά το φθινόπωρο, στο Σαλέντο . Η γιορτή ξεκίνησε το 1986 ως μια συνεταιριστική εκδήλωση, στο ελαιουργείο του Αγροτικού Συνεταιρισμού «Νέα Γενιά» και καθιερώθηκε από το 1989 ως μια λαϊκή γιορτή στο ιστορικό κέντρο του Μαρτάνο, με στόχο την αξιοποίηση της πλούσιας παραγωγής ελιάς και ελαιολάδου στην περιοχή. Με τα χρόνια κέρδισε όλο και περισσότερους νέους θαυμαστές, με αποτέλεσμα να υποχρεώσει τους διοργανωτές να τη μεταφέρουν στη πλατεία Primo Maggio, ένας ανοιχτός χώρος, αρκετά μεγάλος για να φιλοξενήσει τις δεκάδες χιλιάδες των καλοφαγάδων που την επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο. Η γιορτή είναι γνωστή και για την εξαιρετική γαστρονομική ποικιλία που παρουσιάζει, όχι μόνο επειδή συνθλίβονται οι ελιές, οι οποίες παρασκευάζονται σύμφωνα με μια πολύ παλιά χωριάτικη συνταγή, ( οι ελιές παίρνονται από τα δέντρα ενώ είναι ακόμα πράσινες στην αρχή της ωρίμανσης, λίγες μέρες πριν πάρουν την κόκκινο-μαυριδερή απόχρωση, μετά συνθλίβονται χτυπώντας τες μ’ ένα βαρύ και σκληρό αντικείμενο, συνήθως κομμάτι πέτρας, ακολούθως για να τους φύγει η πίκρα βρέχονται σε τρεχούμενο νερό για δεκαπέντε μέρες και τέλος,

αφού αλατισθούν, διανέμονται δωρεάν στους επισκέπτες), αλλά και για τα πολλά νόστιμα παραδοσιακά φαγητά της γκραικάνικης διατροφικής παράδοσης, όπως πικροράδικα(πικραλίδες) με όσπρια, λουκουμάδες, κομματάκια από κρέας αλόγου σε σάλτσα, βραστό χοιρινό κρέας διατηρημένο σε σάλτσα, όλα φτιαγμένα ακολουθώντας πιστά τις τοπικές, παλιές, παραδοσιακές συνταγές. Αλλά, σημαντική συμβολή για την αυξανόμενη επιτυχία της γιορτής πρέπει να αποδοθεί στη πολύ καλή οργάνωση, την οποία αναλαμβάνει, όπως και οτιδήποτε άλλο έχει σχέση με την εκδήλωση, ο Πολιτιστικός Σύλλογος «Cosimo Moschettini.» Χάρη στην εγκατάσταση του μεγάλου πρωτοποριακού υποστέγου φτιαγμένο από ανθεκτικές τέντες και του μεγάλου αριθμού από πάγκους και καρέκλες, στη γιορτή είναι δυνατόν να φιλοξενηθούν μέχρι δύο χιλιάδες επισκέπτες σε σκεπαστό χώρο, οι οποίοι μπορούν να απολαύσουν με άνεση, τις λιχουδιές των ορεκτικών πιάτων της διατροφικής παράδοσης του Σαλέντο με την κεφάτη συνοδεία των ήχων και των τραγουδιών λαϊκής μουσικής, που παίζονται ζωντανά από γνωστά μουσικά συγκροτήματα. Η γιορτή της σπαστής ελιάς (βολία Κατσάτα) έχει αδελφοποιηθεί από το 1995 με τη γιορτή του ρυζιού-πιλάφι της Βιλιμπέντα (Villimpenta) στη Μάντοβα, ένα παραδοσιακό πανηγύρι που γεννήθηκε μετά τον 2ο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, για να χαιρετήσει την Άνοιξη.

Ma non minore importanza nel crescente successo della sagra va attribuita alla meticolosa organizzazione, curata, come tutto il resto, dall’Associazione Culturale “Cosimo Moschettini”. Grazie alla installazione di tensostrutture all’avanguardia ed alla generosa disponibilità di panche e sedute, la sagra è in grado di ospitare fino a duemila persone al coperto, che possono gustare, comodamente sedute, gli appetitosi piatti della tradizione salentina con l’accompagnamento di coinvolgenti brani di musica popolare, eseguiti dal vivo da qualificate band.

La sagra della volìa cazzata è gemellata, dal 1995, con la Festa del risotto di Villimpenta (Mantova), tradizionale festa nata nel primo dopoguerra per salutare la primavera.

Per tutta la durata della manifestazione martanese è possibile degustare alcuni piatti della tradizione villimpentese (oltre al rinomato risotto, la cui ricetta è stata depositata, anche la tipica polenta) accompagnati dal lambrusco prodotto nel mantovano.

Grazie al gemellaggio, la sagra, oltre ad arricchire l’offerta gastronomica, è riuscita ad aprire nuove opportunità di collaborazione con l’hinterland lombardo. La data di realizzazione si colloca, generalmente, all’interno della seconda decade di ottobre, con piccole variazioni dovute al periodo di idonea maturazione delle olive.

Thanks to advanced tensile structures and several seats, the sagra can host about 2000 people indoors, offering them a wide range of delicious dishes from the Salento tradition together with all-involving live bands who perform the most famous local music.

Since 1995 the sagra is twinned with the ‘Festa del risotto di Villimpenta’ (Feast of the rice of Villimpenta), a traditional feast born in the first postwar to welcome the springtime.

During the festival the visitors can also taste some typical dishes from Villimpenta, like the renowned risotto and the famous polenta (corn mush), while sipping the special Lambrusco wine made in the area of Mantova.

This twinning has brought new important chances of cooperation with the Lombard hinterland.

The sagra della volìa cazzata is usually held in the second decade of October, with small changes due to the ripeness of the olives.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης στο Μαρτάνο μπορείτε να δοκιμάσετε και άλλα παραδοσιακά πιάτα της Βιλιμπέντα (εκτός από το περίφημο πιλάφι, σερβίρεται και η παραδοσιακή μπομπότα) που συνοδεύονται από το οναμαστό κρασί Λαμπρούσκο(lambrusco) το οποίο παράγεται στη Μάντοβα. Χάρη στη αδερφοποίηση, η γιορτή εκτός από τον εμπλουτισμό της γαστρονομικής της ποικιλίας, κατάφερε να ανοίξει νέες ευκαιρίες για συνεργασία με την ενδοχώρα της Λομβαρδίας. Η ημερομηνία διεξαγωγής της γιορτής τοποθετείται, συνήθως, κατά το δεύτερο δεκαήμερο του Οκτωβρίου, με μικρές παραλλαγές που δικαιολογούνται για να ορισθεί η κατάλληλη περιόδος της ωρίμανσης των ελιών.
