Film Fest The Chicago Palestine Film Festival recently collaborated with the Arab Student Union from Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills to host a film night. The night also was part of many events the college held in honor of Arab Heritage Month. The screening featured the highly acclaimed short, “The Nation Estate” directed by Larissa Sansour, and the award winning documentary, “The World Around Us” by Abdallah Omeish. Both these films were chosen due the powerful message brought up concerning

Palestine. “Nation Estate” offers a vision of a utopian Palestinian Society and clinical, yet humorous approach to the deadlock in the Middle East, while “The War Around Us” takes us inside the 3 week attack on Gaza in 2008 from the perspective of two Arab American reporters who found themselves thrown into the battle and determined to relay what was really happening to the lives of those living within the Gaza borders. Nearly 200 men, women, children of all ages came out and enjoyed films that they could relate to as fellow Palestinians. They were educated on their homeland and were able to

see images not always shown through mainstream media. It was an opportunity to see a different view projected through film. Jameeleh Shelo, Project Manager for the festival, was happy with the great turnout and hopes to hold more in the future. She states, “The CPFF is dedicated to bringing the stories of the Palestinian people to Chicago. It’s important that we constantly expose these films to a new audience so the festival can continue to grow and serve its purpose. Moraine Valley and the students of the ASU provided us with an amazing venue and support in order to bring the festival to the Southside for the first time in almost a decade. “ The collaboration with MVCC ensured a broader audience was able to enjoy films from the Chicago Palestine Film Festival, that usually takes place every year during April and May. It is a well-known fact the south-side Palestinian community is a strong one, and both CPFF and ASU we were delighted to see people with their families come out and watch films that they normally wouldn’t be able to see. And those who were not Palestinian were able to learn something new about a region often misrepresented. The Chicago Palestine Film Festival is the world’s longest running festival dedicated solely to bringing the stories of Palestine to Chicago through film. With over 200 films showcased to date, every year the festival strives to bring together films about Palestine that engage, enlighten and entertain our audiences and leave you inspired.
