T-R-A-P-P-E-D, EP.9

Written By Haya Barakat

After that night, everything seemed… different, to Melanie. Her new life with regular sleep and Roya and getting to know her family better felt familiar to her at that point, but something just seemed off. Something seemed weird, and Melanie was dying to know what it was. “Is everything okay, Melanie?” Dr. Codey asked her. She snapped out of her wondering daze and looked back at the therapist, who still had that green notebook and pen in his hands. She thought about the other couple therapists she had been to, none of which worked out- Dr. Harris, Dr. Miller, now Dr. Codey. But one itched at the back of Melanie’s head like a frozen ink splatter permanently stained in Melanie’s mind. Dr. Brady. Melanie hated him, Roya hated him, Melanie’s family hated him, even Dr. Codey hated him. It was an everlasting thing. It was like the taste of bitter, old medicine or dusty candy. It was purple-black and gray and red-black. “Everything’s fine,” Melanie replied with. She wasn’t sure what else to say. Maybe she should say the truth. “But, something seems...off. Or, like, weird, but I’m not sure what it is.” Dr. Codey wrote something down in his notebook, nodding his head. “And you can’t tell what?” Dr. Codey questioned and Melanie nodded in response. Dr. Codey hummed in thought before squinting his eyes a bit. “Is it something with your family?” Melanie shook her head no. It definitely wasn’t her family. They gave her a different vibe once she started to get to know them better, but it wasn’t a bad one like she felt. “School? The treehouse?” Dr Codey guessed, then hesitated for a bit. “Roya?” Melanie froze at the name. She thought for a bit, thinking back to her and Roya’s last conversation in the treehouse- it was only a couple days before. They just simply talked as they usually did about random 8

things. Melanie suddenly realized that, even though everything she and Roya did was perfectly normal for them- pink-yellow and red- it gave off a different vibe than it usually did. It felt different and, honestly, weird. It felt off-place. Melanie slowly nodded her head, leaning forward in her seat across from Dr. Codey’s. Dr. Codey was silent for a couple seconds before smiling a bit. “You know, Melanie, you never told me anything about Roya. I know you talked to your mom about her, but I don’t know anything. Mind filling me in? What’s she like? What does she look like? What are her hobbies? When and where did you two meet?” Dr. Codey asked, shifting in his seat a bit, a whitered and green-red gleam to his eyes. All the questions bubbled in Melanie’s head. Just answering those four, yellow-brown questions seemed tiring and orange. But she nodded her head and sat a bit straighter in her seat. “Well, she has auburn hair and blue eyes, and her voice is really soft. She’s nice, and funny, and easy to talk to. She’s really trustworthy. She knows how to keep a secret. And she likes what I like, reallydrawing, writing, all that stuff. We met at the treehouse about a year ago,” Melanie answered quickly, straining to not use any colors in her sentences. She knew that it was synesthesia, and knew that Dr. Codey knew as well, but she didn’t want to confuse Dr. Codey or have to explain what her own colors meant. It was kind of a personal thing between her and Roya. She hated other people knowing what a color stood for. “That’s...nice. Having a friend who understands you and does what you like to do,” Dr. Codey replied. Melanie felt slightly grateful for his understanding and lack of ‘Roya isn’t real’ talk. Suddenly, as Dr. Codey was writing Melanie’s words down into his notebook, his brown eyes behind his thin glasses widened and he snapped his head to look back up at Melanie, his expression purple-orange. Scared. “What?” Melanie asked. “What did you say Roya looked like again?” Dr. Codey inquired, his voice shaky, like an earthTo con quake, or a volcano about to ext readin inue plode at any moment. the Q g Scan “Uh...auburn hair and blue eyes?

Jokes & Thoughts A lawyer’s dog, running around town unleashed, heads for a butcher shop and steals a roast. The butcher goes to the lawyer’s office and asks, “if a dog running unleashed steals a piece of meat from my store, do I have a right to demand payment for the meat from the dog’s owner?” The lawyer answers, “Absolutely.” “Then you owe me $8.50. Your dog was loose and stole a roast from me today.” The lawyer, without a word, writes the butcher a check for $8.50. The butcher, having a feeling of satisfaction, leaves. Three days later, the butcher finds a bill from the lawyer: $100 due for a consultation.
