Melanie waited impatiently. About a week after the session with Dr. Codey and Melanie telling him what blue-black was, she finally took the test for what Dr. Codey said was synesthesia. She waited with her parents in his office, a white-red and green-red feeling coursing through her. She felt... excited and interested. That was the exact translation. After a couple more minutes of waiting, Dr. Codey walked in with a small smile on his face. He sat down across from Melanie in his usual chair and spoke. “We looked at the results and you do in fact have a case of synesthesia. That isn’t a bad thing, but it is good to be aware of it,” Dr. Codey said and Melanie didn’t know what to feel. She had an answer as to why she hated ‘normal’ words with such passion and why only Roya could understand her when she tried to speak like herself. Roya probably had synesthesia, too. “Thank you, Dr. Codey. We have another meeting scheduled next Thursday if I’m correct?” Melanie’s mom asked Dr. Codey, to which he nodded to. “Good. We’ll see you then.” And with that, they simply walked out, as if they hadn’t just answered the question Melanie’s been asking herself for months. --The next day after school, Melanie wasn’t sure of what to do. She looked around her room, yellowbrown but cozy. She stood up and just walked around, with no idea of where she wanted to go. After a bit of walking around her house, she found her way to the bathroom, where she looked at herself in the mirror for a bit. The dark bags that used to cover the bottom of her eyelids weren’t there anymore, and she looked less tired and more yellow 8

and white-red. She looked at her appearance more and remembered how Roya described her. When they first met each other, they did a couple exercises to get to know each other- trying to describe each other’s appearance the best they could was one of them. Melanie said what she always did- violin lips and red cloud hair and beach wave eyes and smooth, cold marble hands with a voice of flowing water. Roya said that Melanie had forest tree hair and brown fire eyes and acoustic guitar lips with a voice of soft marshmallows and a scent of almonds and a warm pencil touch. Melanie understood it all perfectly, and she knew that she would always understand Roya. But she didn’t. Just a couple days ago, Roya had said that everything was blue-black, and Melanie had no idea why. She kind of didn’t want to know, but her curiosity got the best of her. She ran out of the bathroom and, as quietly as she could, opened her bedroom window and climbed down the ladder, sprinting into the woods and to the treehouse, where she had a strong feeling Roya would be. After a while, she heard it- a soft hum of a song that sounded like flowing water, melted marshmallows, a sweet birdsong on a blanket of fur and honey. She hesitated at the first step of the treehouse ladder, thinking her options over. Either Roya would be more yellow than she was before, or even more red-black and purple-orange. Melanie climbed up anyways. She thought, this was her best friend, the only one who could understand her. She couldn’t give that up because of one incident. When Melanie reached the top, there Roya was, laying down on the wood floor, her eyes closed. She must’ve heard the creaking of the wood, as she opened her beach wave eyes and turned to look at Melanie. Melanie froze half-way into the treehouse, half of her body still on the ladder. Roya sat up and looked down, sitting cross-legged. After a couple moments of awkward silence, Roya finally spoke

Horoscope
Virgo
SEPT 21- Oct. 20 You are a pain in the ass. You regulate your breathing and color-coordinate the clothes in your closet. No Virgo in history has ever belched. Virgos clean every square inch of everything they own twice daily with a toothbrush. Everything has its place, and yours is on the floor scrubbing with a magnifying glass, checking for germs. Obsessive-compulsive disorder? A nice euphemism for the word “Virgo”. Virgos use pointers and elaborate charts to describe philosophical concepts. You commit a lot of drive-by shootings. When you are questioned, you tell the police that it was because “the bastard had a filthy car”. The police usually let you go because they are Virgos too. It is easy to freak out a Virgo. Tell them they have something between their teeth. Then watch them scrub frantically at the imaginary thing. Virgos are a hell of a lot of fun for assholes like us. Hell for a Virgo is being locked up in an elevator for eternity with a naked Aquarius. That is because in hell, Aquarians are allowed to bring beer, which they leave all over the floor. Virgos, however, have to surrender their brooms and squeegees
to God. Virgos also have a hard time coping when they find out there’s something under the fridge. But it’s usually just a depressed Taurus. Virgos have read enough Hints from Heloise to know that the depressed Taurus can be coaxed out from under the fridge with a banana wine cooler. Virgos don’t see the world in shades of black and white. They see it in shades of clean and dirty. Cat hair makes Virgos foam at the mouth. Virgos are cool because they will do your laundry for you. They’ll separate everything by color and fabric until it consists of fourteen loads of three things apiece. Then they will put them in the washer in alphabetical order by name of manufacturer. Virgos are often found opening and shutting the refrigerator door, attempting to trick the light inside. Don’t put cheese where it doesn’t belong in a Virgo’s refrigerator. He or she will go Jack Torrence on your ass. You will be stabbed with a cuticle pusher. Jack Torrence was probably a Virgo in the first half of “The Shining”. After that, he went all Leo.
