T-R-A-P-P-E-D, EP.5
Written By Haya Barakat
Melanie, for the first time ever, was yellowpink when she walked into Dr. Codey’s office the next day. She was fidgety and had a small, genuine smile on her face when she sat in front of Dr. Codey. The therapist looked up and looked green-red and orange-red. “You’re...jumpy,” Dr. Codey pointed out and Melanie shrugged. “What happened?” Another shrug from Melanie. “Just some stuff.” Today is my birthday and my favorite person in the world sang to me yesterday and has a surprise for me and it’s making me happy. “Well, I’m happy to see you in a better mood, Melanie,” Dr. Codey responded, thankfully not pressing on. “Did you talk to your mother yet? I gave her a call right after you left to tell her that you wanted to speak to her.” Melanie nodded her head, longingly staring out the window beside her with a dreamy look in her wood brown eyes. “I talked to her about Roya,” she confirmed. Dr. Codey nodded his head, glancing warily out the window to where Melanie was looking. “About?” “What she was like, what she looked like, and what she liked to do,” Melanie answered bluntly. Dr. Codey nodded again, this time looking near his desk, where a square-shaped white bottle was, labeled ‘Ambien’. “I’m sure your mother talked to you about the Ambien?” Melanie’s yellow-pink mood immediately dropped to blue-gray and slightly red-black. She was definitely annoyed as well. “I don’t need sleeping pills,” Melanie said and Dr. Codey sighed. “We know you don’t want them, but they’re for your own good. You should really try to get some sleep, Melanie. It’ll be good for you and it’ll make you happier and healthier,” Dr. Codey explained carefully, warily watching every move Melanie made. Melanie sighed heavily, looking at anything but Dr. Codey. “Whatever,” she responded with. Dr. Codey hesitated for a moment before picking up 8

his notebook and pencil again and setting it on his lap. “Your mother told me something about Roya.” Melanie’s red-black storm raised dramatically. She knew what her mother had told Dr. Codey even before Dr. Codey said it aloud. That morning, when she was eating breakfast, she was just so excited that she told her mother about Roya comforting her and the song she sung to her. That pink-green river of flowers and soft caramel of a song and her voice. She also told her mother that it was a secret between them three, to not tell anyone. “She told me that Roya sung a song to you?” he asked cautiously. Melanie grit her teeth and slowly nodded her head. Dr. Codey sighed and quickly scribbled into his notebook. “And you sung her a song as well? A ‘song that everybody has heard’?” “Yes,” Melanie responded, clenching her hands into tight fists. That electricity, bad mint, cold wooden pencil taste was in her mouth again, and she hated it with a red-black passion. “And you don’t know what the song she sang to you was?” “What’s it to you?” Melanie snapped suddenly, so loud she startled Dr. Codey, who looked up at her with wide eyes. “I- just wanted to ask where you two met...” Dr. Codey trailed off, his pencil inches away from his notebook. Melanie shrunk back into her chair, grinding her teeth angrily. “You could’ve just asked me that,” Melanie responded, the words flowing out of her mouth the taste of tornadoes and burnt aluminum foil. Dr. Codey was silent for a few seconds before setting his pencil down on his lap. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Melanie, you’re right,” Dr. Codey apologized, placing his notebook and pencil aside on the desk next to the Ambien bottle. Melanie glared at the prescription drugs for a few seconds until Dr. Codey snapped her out of her redblack fury. “Where did you two meet?” Dr. Codey asked slowly, cautiously, as if Melanie were a purple-orange, blue-black child. Melanie didn’t even think about it. She spilled the truth before she could realize what she was doing. “The treehouse.” The moment she said those two words, she regretted it. Dr. Codey’s eyes flashed with green-red. Interest. He picked up his notebook

and pencil again and lowered his pencil to the paper. “What treehouse?” Dr. Codey asked, obvious white-red in his voice. Melanie shut her eyes and laid her head back on the chair she was sitting on. She wished she could turn back time so she could avoid saying anything about her true home, the only place she didn’t feel trapped, to a person who was constantly trapping her in the walls of her own life. “We- I found a treehouse in the woods behind my house,” Melanie replied bitterly. Dr. Codey scratched a few words into his notebook before asking another question. “What’s it like?” Dr. Codey
pressed on. Melanie shrugged again. “I dunno. Woody.” Yellow-purple. The way wet chalk feels. The B note on the piano. “Do your parents know about the treehouse?” Dr. Codey questioned. “Does it matter?” Melanie responded with, a little more defensively than she intended. Dr. Codey blinked. “I suppose it doesn’t,” he said slowly. “What...What did you tell your mother about Roya exactly?” he asked, obviously trying to change the subject. Melanie sat slightly straighter in her seat at the thought of being able to talk about Roya.
“That she’s nice and funny and understanding. That she has auburn hair and blue eyes and a soft voice. That she likes what I like to do,” Melanie explained, the bitter, purple-black tastes in her mouth gone, replaced with what soap tastes like. It was weird and flavorless. Dr. Codey froze, a terrified, purple-orange look in his dark

Horoscope
Cancer
JUNE 21 - JULY 20
You like to know what’s going on in the lives of everyone in the galaxy. However, you tend not know what’s going on in your own. If you are lucky, your friends will tell you. Cancerians only get dressed because they have to, and their fashion sense can only be described as “erratic.” You are more likely than any other sign in the zodiac (except Pisces, who does not iron) to iron your clothes by sleeping with them sandwiched between the mattress and box-spring. Likewise, you can stretch one pair of underwear out for almost a month. Your home is like your very own Biodome, and you can remain indoors for months at a time. Despite your need to be everyone’s savior, you need no social interaction. SWAT teams often show up, mistakenly thinking there’s a hostage situation. A Cancer is like a walking Ladies’ Home Journal, quick on the draw with shortcake recipes and helpful hints on how to talk to your teen. Whether they know it or not, they are all born with an exceptional talent for crossstitch. So much for buying the world a Coke - they would breast-feed the world if they could. This trait is not gender-specific. You will never excel in sports because you
have to rest for fifteen minutes every time you breathe. You do not mind, since you plan to conduct your career from the comfort of your own bed. You maintain your questionable health through a steady diet of Ho-Ho’s and beer. You also imbibe a great deal of Pepto-Bismol in order to confuse your numerous ulcers. People walk on you often. Actually, not often - all the time. If you think someone is screwing you, you’re probably right. The most entertaining thing about this is that you like it. You strive to be a doormat. Cancerians coin their own words to describe philosophical concepts. This is why it is no surprise that George W. Bush is a Cancer. Cancerians have minimal influence over their friends, even though they show up with homemade soup to remedy every minor or major tragedy. However, they wield their power through the fact that they know what everyone is thinking at any given time. This is why they are never invited to parties. Cancerians claim to be “tactful”. The word for this is actually “shiftless”. Cancerians are always appointed to take their drunken, drooling friends home. These friends are usually Pisceans

Open House Advocate Health Care
Over 200 attendees participated in last night’s Open House: Advocate Outpatient Center - Oak Lawn; signifying the partnership between Advocate Health Care and Oak Lawn to build a new, accessible and comprehensive facility with 70+ physicians, imaging services, a laboratory, and more to empower residents to live well.
“Today, we’ve created a garden of promises and commitments to ourselves, each other and our community, about how we will work together to make healthy happen...About how we will transform ourselves and reimagine what “health” and “health care” looks like and feels like for this generation, and the next, and the next.” Reverend Larry Jackson from Advocate Health Care shared this sentiment and charge last night as leaders, patients, and families helped create this symbolic garden and released Monarch butterflies to commit to this health transformation. The open house featured Village of Oak Lawn’s Mayor Sandra Bury, Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn, Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 Jazz Combo, Saint Xavier University Jazz Combo, Advocate Children’s Hospital’s booths & Care Mobile, and our Community Health team, who helped over 60+ residents get free skin cancer screenings.
