Written By Haya Barakat “Are you okay?” Roya asked Melanie, who shook her head no furiously in response. “What happened?” Roya’s voice was stern and protective, and Melanie liked when it turned from flowing water to warm ice, but it didn’t stop her tears from flowing down her cheek. “Dr. Codey and my mom agreed on giving me Ambien, and I don’t want to. I don’t want to take any drugs, I don’t want to listen to them. I just want to be free. They’re trapping me again, Roya. They’re trapping me,” Melanie sobbed into Roya’s shoulder. Roya immediately held Melanie tighter, allowing her to cry and not saying another word. “It’s okay. One day they’ll understand that you just need to think for yourself, that they don’t need to make your decisions for you,” Roya said, slowly pulling away from Melanie and giving her a blue and understanding smile. “Hopefully,” Melanie replied, her voice slightly cracking. Roya thought for a few seconds, glancing around at the trees surrounding them. Melanie recognized the place. They weren’t too far from their treehouse. “Is there anything I can do?” Roya asked Melanie sweetly. Melanie thought for a moment before slowly nodding. “Can you sing for me? Something that...no one has heard before?” Melanie requested. She remembered how her mother would always sing her to sleep, and every night she’d try to sing a different song. Back in the older, easier days, when all Melanie needed was a short song sung to her by her mother to fall asleep, not drugs prescription drugs given to her from her therapist. Roya’s smile widened a bit and she nodded her head in response. “Of course,” she answered. She took a deep breath before starting to sing. It was a soft, slow song, and her voice was more like flowing water than ever. It was a pink-green river of flowers 8

and soft caramel. Her voice was the way honey felt, the way a birdsong sounded. Melanie was so entranced in Roya’s voice, she didn’t realize the song Roya was singing was the same tune she was humming in the treehouse, the song Melanie also hummed just mere minutes ago next to her mother. Melanie decided at that moment that it was her favorite song in the world, better than any song her mother sang to her when she was younger, better than any song she heard on the radio or the school played on the P.A system during passing period. It was the best thing to listen to, especially hearing it from Roya. When Roya was finished, Melanie looked up at her with a small, genuine smile on her face. “Thank you,” she thanked Roya, her blue temporarily gone. Roya smiled at her in response. “You’re welcome. Can you do the same for me? But not a song no one has heard. A song that everybody has heard,” Roya asked, slightly startling Melanie. Melanie hadn’t sung in her life besides silly duets with her mother when she repeated a song. But Melanie was willing to do anything for her best friend. She closed her eyes and for some reason, started singing ‘Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star’. She thought it was silly at first, but continued singing it for a whole minute. When she was done, she opened her eyes again and Roya’s eyes were also closed. When she opened them, Melanie stared into miles of oceans and the brightest skies on the sunniest summer days. Roya smiled down at Melanie one more time before turning her head to look at something in the distance. Without turning back to Melanie, she asked, “Do you want to go to the treehouse?” “Of course. When do I not want to?” Melanie replied. Roya chuckled before grabbing Melanie’s hand and immediately sprinting deeper into the woods. Melanie giggled and raced behind her, hot on her trail as Roya sped to Melanie’s true home. After about a minute of running as fast as they could, they finally reached their treehouse. Roya......

Gemini

MAY 22 -JUNE 21 Everyone loves a Gemini because everyone loves a schizophrenic. You like to think that you are a half-and half mixture of Socrates and Michelangelo, but in reality, it’s more like Prince and Bea Arthur. You are progressive, outgoing, and one of the most popular rides at Cedar Point. However, you can and will negate all of this by the time you’re finished reading this sentence. Geminis drive funny cars. They often drive them into trees or buildings. Geminis are pushy and overbearing. They pick fights with small children and moon people at weddings. They like to use Libras as punching bags. A bisexual Gemini is a walking double date. The rest are hermaphrodites. Geminis vandalize their own houses. Geminis use far-fetched analo-

gies to describe philosophical concepts. Geminis rarely compete in the Olympics. When they do, it is usually pool or air hockey. Frogger turns up as well. Geminis are always on some sort of medication. This medication is not always legal. Gemini is Latin for “I’m okay, I’m okay.” Geminis speak very loudly in order to be heard. This is unfortunate as they are nearly always talking to themselves. In fact, they often pick animated arguments with themselves in the bathtub. The most famous Gemini in history is Orville and Wilbur Wright. Geminis are frequently abidextrous, which means that they can pick both sides of their noses at the same time. The Gemini is essentially nothing more than a paranoid Aquarius.

Madigan introduced a law recognized April as “Arab American Heritage Month and it was approved unanimously by the Illinois House and Illinois Senate, and signed by the governor on Dec. 14, 2018. More than 100 elected officials and Arab American community leaders came together on April 10 to celebrate the revival of Arab American Heritage month, April. The commemoration of Arab American contributions to this country and their culture was codified in a state law introduced by Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan and approved unanimously by the Illinois General Assembly and signed into law on Dec. 14, 2018. Arab AMerican heritage month had previously been held in November but was gutted for political reasons by former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and former Governor Bruce Rauner in 2011. Officials from across Cook County gathered on Wednesday (April 10, 2019) to celebrate Arab American Heritage Month, April, with leaders of the Chicagoland Arab American community at a new Southwest Suburban restaurant to enjoy Arab food and cultural activities. The annual cultural celebration had been a tradition in Chicago and Illinois since the 1980s, initiated following the election of Mayor Harold Washington. But the annual commemoration, previously held
