Action Story: Episode 5 By: Haya Barakat Lured Inside You’d think by now

I would’ve known what to do besides run for my life. That’s completely wrong. What else am I supposed to do? Battle a giant tornado to a duel? I run as fast as I can away from the tornado, hoping that I can outrun it. I look behind my shoulder as I see the tornado bolting down the street, ripping through everything in its path. I breathe heavily as I sprint down the road, praying to survive. I spot a house that seems to be empty that has a ‘For Sale’ sign on it. No one’s in it. I should know by now to not enter buildings that don’t belong to me, but it doesn’t really count if the building doesn’t belong to anyone. Besides, this is a life-or-death situation. And I choose to live thank you very much. I bolt towards the house, the tornado hot on my trail, and rip open the front door. I jump in the house and shut the door, then look around for a basement or something I can hide in. Soon enough I find a door that leads to a set of stairs that must lead to the basement, so I grab the flashlight I stole- or ‘borrowed’- from the police car and turn it on, facing the stairs. I carefully step down into the dark basement and look around. It’s completely empty. Good. I hear the roaring of the wind getting louder and I know the tornado is close so I shut the basement door and run down the stairs, keeping my flashlight on so I don’t crash into anything. I duck into the corner farthest from the 20

small window, turn my flashlight off and put it back in my pocket, then get into a tornado-safe position. I kneel down on my knees, duck my head, and cover my neck with both my hands. As I’m doing this I pray to make it out of this situation alive. I want to see my parents and my friends again. I want to go to school and learn again. I breathe heavily and nearly scream as I hear the house up above being ripped apart. My whole body shakes with fear as one of my only protection gets destroyed. I hear a cracking from the ceiling of the basement, but I don’t dare look up. All I know is that the last barrier that’s protecting me right now is about to fall right on top of me, and I do not like that. Soon enough, half the ceiling collapses, some of it on me, but they’re not big. I prepare myself for what’s next, but I’m not prepared as a huge chunk of the basement ceiling falls right on my leg, trapping me. I yell out in pain and try to yank my leg free with no success. I do the mistake of looking up and around, and see small chunks of the ceiling falling around me, until I look straight up and see a huge piece cracking and ready to fall right above me. I suck in a breath and prepare myself as the chunk of debris slowly starts to fall. Just as the last piece holding it together breaks off, I put my jacket hood up, kneel down, and cover the back of my neck with my hands again. That doesn’t stop the ceiling from falling right on top of me, and crashing right onto my

head. I feel myself get extremely dizzy, and black dots dance around in my vision. My eyesight is blurry and my hearing seems to be muffled, though I can still hear the roaring wind and the crashing of the house I’m in. My hands fall limp to my sides and my eyelids start to grow as heavy as if my eyelashes were made of thick lead. I struggle to stay conscious and fight through the pain, but I can’t. With my pounding head and broken bones, I feel about ready to let myself pass out, but I know I can’t or I’ll die. I continue to try to stay awake, but my strength doesn’t last long as my eyes finally close and my whole body falls limp under the collapsed basement ceiling. The last thing I see is darkness before I pass out under a collapsed building. To Be Continued…
