Action Story: Episode 3 By: Haya Barakat Lured Inside to make it fall or tip over. I I wake up freez- hoping quickly realize that’s a bad idea and I sigh and wonder what else I ing cold in…some- stop. can do. I look down at the cage and thing. Definitely not a bed or a see the lock dangling from the metcouch. I rub my eyes and slowly peel them open. I cover my mouth with my gloved hand to keep myself from screaming. I’m outside. But not just outside, I’m in a cage. A huge cage that looks like it belongs to a dog. I try to place my mind on what happened when it all hits me like a boomerang. The two guys, Tony and Holt. I climbed into their car and they decided to give me back to my parents for a price. My mind wanders to my parents. I wonder how worried they are about me right now. I wonder how much money they’re going to have to pay to get me back, or if they’re going to pay at all. I focus on reality again and stare at the white storm swirling around me through the metal bars. I have to get out of this cage, but how? My fingers and toes are already starting to numb from the cold and I can tell my face is already bright red. I’ll get frostbite soon enough, and maybe even hypothermia if I don’t get out of here quick. I shake the cage as hard as I can,

al. I can pick the lock. I quickly shove my freezing hands into my coat and jeans pockets, looking for anything that can help me pick the lock. Hopefully they haven’t cleared out my pockets yet. I don’t feel anything and scan the area around me and see the wooden house a few yards away. It looks so comfy and warm. I wish I can be in there, or better yet, at my own house, playing a video game or studying for a quiz or test. I snap out of my trance and scan around me again. I notice a small yet pointy stick lying a foot away from the cage. I squeeze my hand through the metal bars, easily grab the stick, and pull my arm back into the cage. I take the stick and shove it in the lock. I carefully twist the stick around until I hear a small click. I hesitate for a moment until I reach out and take the lock off the cage. I breathe a sigh of relief and throw the lock into the snow. I quietly open the cage and sneak out of it, finally free. I crawl into the snow on my hands and knees. A small smile creeps on my face until

I hear a low growl from above me. I slowly look up and see a huge German Shepard glaring at me, its teeth bared. Behind him are two grown men who I easily recognize as my two kidnappers, Holt and Tony. “Where do you think you’re going, kid?” Holt asks me, a smirk plastered on his face. My heart races for the hundredth time today and Holt grabs my hoodie and drags me back to the wooden house. I don’t bother struggling against him, because I know he’s much stronger than me. Holt drags me into the house and lets me go when we’re inside. Tony leads the god, Charlie, inside as well, and closes the door behind him. “Now, kid. We need to ask you, what’s your parents’ numbers, huh?” Holt asks me, smirking. “I don’t know,” I bluff. I’m ten years old and I’m in seventh grade. Of course I know my parents’ phone numbers. “Don’t lie, Ethan. We all know you do,” Tony replies, as if reading my mind. “Really, I don’t know. I don’t even have my own phone,” Another lie. I have a phone, but I didn’t bring it with me when I was going to my friends’ house. My mom said not to,

Hate Has No Home In Our Community, Palos Township! During the last monthly general meeting of the Palos Township Trustees, our coalition mobilized hundreds of community members, residents and supporters to attend and protest repeated racist remarks made by Trustee Sharon Brannigan. Biased policies that have been disproportionately leveled against marginalized communities by the current administration have fueled hateful rhetoric and emboldened white supremacists to commit hate crimes, including brutal beatings and murders across the U.S.. Our Community remains concerned that Brannigan’s comments will incite further violence. Her hate speech, which she justifies as a first amendment right, is not isolated, but has surfaced on several occasions over the years, prompting our community to DEMAND HER IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION.

Until our demand is met, we are committed to protesting Ms. Brannigan at every single general meeting. The effort is convened by: AM Vote Pac, Arab American Action Network (AAAN), Arab American Democratic Club, Arab American Family Services (AAFS), Kiswani Law, P.C., Law Offices of Reem Odeh, The Campaign to TAKE ON HATE, along with concerned community members, residents, and activists This rally is endorsed by: (List in formation) Jewish Voice for Peace-Chicago PASO - West Suburban Action Project Southsiders for Peace Southwest Suburban Activists Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression Women’s March - Illinois

Action Story: Episode 3 By: Haya Barakat Lured Inside

First Part of Ep.3 see page 18

just in case I lost it. Look how well that turned out for me. “You’re in seventh grade and you don’t have a phone?” Holt asks me, scoffing. “May I remind you this kid’s only ten years old?” Tony asks Holt. Wow. This really is a good cop/bad cop scenario. Holt grunts and glares at me as I try my best not to hide a smirk. I can’t believe that worked. “Well, you’re going to tell us everything and anything you know about your parents and how we can talk to them about this. Or else I-” Holt is interrupted by a strong wind blowing outside and all the lights in the house flickering on and off until they finally turn off all at once. I hear Charlie barking and Holt mutters something about living in a trash house. “I’ll go find out what’s wrong,” A voice I recognize as Tony offers. I hear a pair of feet walking away. I can’t see anything. Everything is dark. “Looks like it’s just me and you, kid,” Holt grumbles to me. “My name is Ethan,” I reply confidently as an idea-a very stupid one, may I add- pops into my head. “I don’t care what your name is, kid. All I care about is getting that money so I can finally move out of this trach place,” Holt tells me, but I’m not listening. My hands are slowly inching around me, searching for anything that I can throw. Finally, my fingers wrap around something cold. Something metal. I run my fingers through it until I realize what it is. An umbrella. I slightly smile as I quietly pick up the umbrella. Before anyone knows what I’m doing, I lift the umbrella over my head and throw it as far as I can. It hits the ground with a loud CRASH! I

can sense movement in front of me. Holt has jerked up from sitting on the couch. “Tony?” Holt calls out, but I can tell he isn’t at all concerned about his friend. I take the opportunity as Holt takes a step away from me, leaving the path to the front door clear. I jump up and run to the door. I hear Holt yelling at me to come back. I wave my arms out in front of me, hoping that I don’t crash into anything. I blow it. I trip over something big and furry. Charlie. I almost fall and try to regain my balance, but that’s ruined as my back crashes into a table behind me. I turn around and my head bangs into a lamp on the table. I groan and stumble back, holding my head in pain. I’m getting dizzy. I can barely stand up straight. And to make things even more better-note the sarcasm there- I trip over a boot lying on the ground. Before I can catch myself, I fall to the ground on my back, my head colliding with the ground. I hear yelling coming from near me and from a bit farther away and a dog barking non-stop. I try to stand, but I almost immediately fall back down. I can’t get up. I know that I’m going to be knocked out. I just know it. The last time I was knocked out on the floor of this house, I woke up in a dogs’ cage freezing cold outside in a blizzard. I don’t even want to imagine where I’ll wake up next time. I don’t have to. As I hear the yelling and barking getting closer and closer, I’m knocked out for the second time today, in the same place. My kidnappers home.
