We work to put a human face on Palestinians so the public will come to know them as people with the same aspirations, hopes and dreams for freedom and justice that we as Americans hold dear. We also work to educate the public and media about Israel’s occupation of Palestine, the last and longest-lasting occupation in the world. ” - www.ampalestine.org Advertisement

Blood Drive Event As a senior graduating in two months, I believed that it was time to give back to the school that I have been attending since kindergarten. And, what is better way to give back than saving lives? According to the LifeSource representative, the blood drive was able to collect enough blood to save up to 96 lives. This, of course the most important, is only one element of the blood drive. Through the drive, my team(the other student executives) and I were able to work with our Students for Humanitarian Aid Club members to create an opportunity to join together the diverse members of our community and other communities for a good cause. While we reached out to members of our own environment, we challenged ourselves to encourage members of the surrounding areas to come and participant. As a result, familiar faces of aunts, uncles, co workers as well

as new friends were able to come together to generously save a life! This experience has encouraged my team and I to continue to explore new methods to bring together our community and improve our environment. By Julia Asfour, Universal School Student Advertisement

Bahira Karim & Mervate Mohammad On March 23, 2017 the Middle Eastern Community came out and supported candidates Bahira Karim and Mervate Mohammad. The event took placed at Al Nahda Center. Election day was April 4, 2017. “Words cannot express how supported I felt the past few months by a community that really pulled together to get the right message out, the message that diversity is part of this community and a voice that should and will be heard! Unfortunately, the Worth elections did not go as we had anticipated and once again, the Village of Worth has failed the minority in the communities eyes. However, this is just the beginning! We’ve come a long way in the 27 years that I have been a resident of Worth, to have an Arab-American woman make a footprint in the Worth elections gives me great hope for our future and Worth’s political future. I want to congratulate Worth’s incoming trustee’s on their victory and want them to know that we all hold them accountable for ethical and just decisions for the Village of Worth and most importantly all of their citizens no matter their race, religion, gender, or color. I want to commend our Arab owned small businesses, especially Al Nahda, Saraya, and Fattoush in Worth that supported me throughout this entire election process, I will continue to be a voice in our village and advocate for you, the success of your businesses, and any new business opportunities coming into Worth. I cannot thank my fellow local municipal committee members, Brother Ghassan, Abed, Tasneem, Mazen, Naif, Younis, Bahaa, Mahmoun, Bassem, Mahmoud, Senan, and Abu Wael for the hours of effort that they contributed to our cause, one of the greatest gains I have made in this entire process is coming together with such a selfless group of people who collaborated and united for one cause and one unified vision. Last but not least, I want to thank my family who support me endlessly and told me daily how proud they were of me and how I have been a trailblazer for my grandchildren who will one day follow in my footsteps and make their very own mark in this world! Thank you all so much for such a wonderful campaign and providing me with an abundance of support to fall back on, I will forever be grateful for the strides you walked with me throughout this whole process!” - Bahira Karim 26

Friends, It comes with a heavy heart to announce that I did not win this election. This campaign has been a great journey and learning experience. I am thankful for all of the people I met along the way. It is obvious that that results would have been remarkably different should the basis of the votes been on the qualifications of the candidates. Nonetheless, this outcome has only inspired me to move forward and work for the betterment of my community - hence, I am not going anywhere and I will be back, whether it be on the political and/or grassroots front. Many great leaders in our history struggled and lost only to try again and win. I cannot describe how thankful I am for my family, friends, volunteers, neighbors and supporters. Let us all keep up the good fight and I hope to inspire others to keep our “Pride in Progress.” - Mervate Mohammad
