Easter Easter: The High Point of the Christian Calendar. By Father Malek Rihani On April 16th, Christians throughout the world (nearly two and a half billion) will greet one another with traditional Easter greeting: “Christ is Risen… Truly He is Risen” [Al-Maseeh Qaam… Haqqan Qaam]. Easter (Pascha or Eid El Fiseh) is the high point and the highlight of the Christian calendar. It comes after 48 days of preparation: A period of discipline (known as Great Lent) where we rearrange our priorities away from the earthly and towards the heavenly: We reduce the quantity and quality of food (abstaining from meat and dairy products as well as alcohol), and we minimize all forms of entertainment (for example, no weddings or engagements are allowed during Great Lent); and we focus instead on a life of prayer and giving of our time and resources to care for those in need. We take a spiritual walk alongside Jesus Christ, as He carried His cross on the roads of Jerusalem, and where the Jews and the Romans humiliated Him, tortured Him, and finally hung Him on a cross to be executed like a hardened criminal. How Jesus Christ responded to His torturers is the model by which all of us Christians are expected to react to those who hurt us: While He was dying on the cross, even though He had the power and authority to destroy His enemies, Jesus instead looked up to heaven and spoke these renowned words: “Father forgive them for they don’t know what they’re doing” (Luke 23:34). So as we carry our own cross in life, and when we are dealt pain, suffering and injustice, we must likewise have the courage to forgive, rather than seek vengeance and destruction. Christians are expected to take a leadership role in preventing these vicious cycles of evil. We must be determined to make conditions, and not allow ourselves to be victims of them.

Three days after Christ freely accepted this physical and emotional humiliation and a painful death, He victoriously and triumphantly rose from the dead, capping a three-year ministry, filled with many miracles such as healing the sick, calming the storms and raising the dead. But more importantly Jesus Christ delivered His message of building treasures in heaven rather than on earth, treasures like forgiveness, sacrificial love, pursuit of holiness and leading the world in advancing respect and goodwill for all of mankind. The secular world may remember Easter for its bunny, spring time, and special discounts at its favorite mall. We Christians however, must honor Easter as the day that death has been destroyed and evil has been conquered. Christians hold memorial services precisely because we believe that not even death can separate us from our loved ones; and the highest expression of our love for others is to pray for them, whether they’re alive on earth or in the eternal glory of the heavens. By defeating the evil of death, Christ has replaced it with a life of hope. So on those days when we feel beaten down, betrayed and unfairly treated by a cruel world, we can rest assured that our mighty and all powerful God will never abandon us. Through patience and strengthening of our faith, we must trust that good will always overcome evil; and on God’s time, we will prevail. Because some Christians follow the traditional Julian calendar, while others follow the more modern Gregorian calendar, Easter can fall on different Sundays for these groups. But thankfully this year Easter will fall on the same Sunday for all Christians. This brings us great joy, as we’re all able to fast, pray and celebrate together on the same timeline. This is especially important as our brothers and sisters in occupied Palestine can celebrate hand-in-hand at the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the site where Jesus Christ was buried and had resurrected. And as Christ destroyed death, we pray that He likewise will destroy all the hatred and violence in the Holy Land, so that our people who have been dealt the injustice, humiliation and pain of a brutal and inhumane occupation, can finally celebrate their own resurrection and freedom so that people of all faiths can enjoy their God-given right for peace, serenity and goodwill to all. Wishing all of our beloved readers and their families a very happy, glorious and blessed Easter.
