Islamic Relief USA’s Event The Palestinian Heart Shining Through The Palestinian-American Promise By: Mayssoun Olabi & Zainab HassanIslamic Relief USA Mohammad Assaf entered the stage to greet a clapping and cheering crowd. He spoke in Arabic, his mother tongue — a choice he made to grant his words the meanings and feelings embedded in the Arabic language and a long Palestinian history and culture. “I am a Palestinian refugee,” he said onstage on a U.S. tour with Islamic Relief USA in December. “Growing up in a camp, our hard life taught us there is always a way.” And Assaf — now an international star — has definitely found a way. His songs go beyond tunes and lyrics to symbolize love of home and the value and rights of each human. For many people living in Gaza, he resembles a beacon of hope. He represents a promise that with just a little help, everyone could showcase who they really are: a talented, spiritual people, with a strong will to live and succeed. Assaf traveled with Islamic Relief USA to six soldout events in New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan, Florida and Texas. He lifted the crowds from their seats and raised $1.7 million for

projects providing humanitarian aid to people of Palestine. Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian-American activist, joined Assaf in some of the cities. “When we wake up in the morning, we need to be grateful to God that he chose us to be Palestinian,” she said. She recalled a personal encounter with a boy selling gum on the streets, and the pride and dignity he showed when Linda tried to give him money without taking any merchandise in return. The boy followed her down the streets and said, “I am not a beggar! I am a businessman. You either take your gum or your money.” Sarsour spoke of the need for unity with all oppressed people. She traveled to Standing Rock in North Dakota, where Native Americans were standing up to protect their water. She was amazed to see they had Palestinian flags everywhere. They saw their liberation, the pipeline situation, connected to the indigenous people of Palestine. The message of the night was clear: we are all one people. It was an echo of Martin Luther King’s words, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” It was an application of the Prophet’s (PBUH) saying we are all one body, so if one part hurts, the rest feels it. The tour, named “Promise for Palestine” and sponsored by Islamic Relief USA, aimed to raise money to support both emergency and developmental work in Gaza. The money raised will benefit primarily children — many little “Assafs” with great potential, who just need a little help to enter the world of success and find their paths towards a brighter future.
