Palestine United Unites for the Win By: Nesreen Ballut, Managing Editor Our local soccer team, Palestine United, had a massive win on July 10, 2016 against Barbados and was awarded the KICS Cup U-16 after playing five competitive games. After several penalty kicks, Palestine United brought the cup home with a final score of 5-4. Watching the games in action, it was clear that the team couldn’t have done it without the support of their two phenomenal coaches, Sami Mahdi and Samer Beituni, who were guiding them in the right direction and had a master plan for their latest triumph. “I was so proud that we were able to make Palestine proud and represent our heritage in a positive way,” said Coach Mahdi. “It was also great to give the children of the Arab community a chance to not only participate, but to take home first place in this championship. It gives the future generation the drive to pursue their dreams on and off the field.” The top two players on the team,

Mohammed Farag and Musa Musa immensely assisted with bringing the cup home, with Farag scoring the most goals that evening. Palestine United, organized by the Palestinian American Athletic Association and sponsored by Ziyad Brothers Importing, consists of individuals from various backgrounds. Players from Yemen, Morocco, Jordan, and Palestine joined together to form the winning team. This includes five players who are originally for the occupied Palestinian Territories of 1948. These five players were able to make it for the final games with the efforts of Hisham Saeed, head of the ‘48 team. Matt Miller, director of the association and Dr. Lena Al-Harthi, head of public relations of the association Chicago KICS, worked tirelessly to make this tournament prevail. Chicago KICS was founded in 2013 and holds tournaments each year in the month of July. Opening ceremonies are commenced in the downtown Chicago area and have inspired youth to join in on the festivities as the tournaments are a week long and are played World Cup style. The celebration of Palestine United’s win was held the following day at the McCormick Place downtown Chicago with over 800 attendees.

Home Remedies Want to get rid of that frustrating cough? Indulge in a square or two of dark chocolate. Researchers found that the theobromine compound in chocolate is more effective than codeine WITHOUT the side effects of the usually drowsiness and constipation. “Eating a bar of dark chocolate a day which has high levels of the compound may also be effective for people with diagnosed persistent cough, although eating chocolate on a daily basis may have other unwanted effects, including weight gain and so on.” (Study Leader Alyn Morice, MD, head of the Hull Cough Clinic)

Jokes/Entertainment That Thing An old Arab lived near NYC for over 40 years. He wanted to plant potatoes in his garden, but he is old and sick. His son is in school in Paris, so the old man sends him an email to let him know of his dilemma: “Darling son, I’m exceptionally sad because I can’t plant potatoes in my garden. I am certain, if you arrived, you would assist and dig up the garden for me. Love you, Your Father”

The next day, the old man gets a reply from his son: “Darling Father, Please don’t touch the garden. It is there that I have hidden ‘the THING’. Love you, as well.Ahmed” At 4 pm the US Army, The Marines, the FBI, the CIA and the Rangers visit the old man’s house, dissect the entire garden, look at every last bit, yet they could not discover anything. Confused, they leave. After a day, the old man gets another email from his son: “Dearest Father, I trust the garden is dug up at this point and you can plant your potatoes. That is all I could do for you from all the way over here. Love, Ahmed”
