Make your Skin Look 5 Years Younger!

What’s needed: ⅔ cup sugar; 2 teaspoons of açai powder; 10 fresh, whole berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or a mix); and 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Jokes/Entertainment One day during Ramadan, Tareq was taking it easy in the shade of a walnut tree. After a time, he started eying speculatively, the huge pumpkins growing on vines and the small walnuts growing on a majestic tree. ‘Sometimes I just can’t understand the ways of God!’ he mused. ‘Just fancy letting tiny walnuts grow on so majestic a tree and huge pumpkins on the delicate vines!’ Just then a walnut snapped off and fell smack on Tareq’s bald head. He got up at once and lifting up his hands and face to heavens in supplication, said, ‘Oh, my God! Forgive my questioning your ways! You are all-wise. Where would I have been now, if pumpkins grew on trees!’

How it works: Berries are rich sources of polyphenols, a class of antioxidants that, besides being used as wrinkle fighters, have another talent. They tighten the skin, minimize pores, and combat hyperpigmentation. The sugar and olive oil form a gentle scrub, which also assist in removing debris trapped in pores. How it’s done: With a potato masher, mash the sugar and açai powder with the berries, then slowly add the olive oil; combine coarsely with a whisk. Massage into the face. Leave on for about 5 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Fasting ≠ Bad Breath By: Nesreen Ballut When is the last time you asked yourself “How am I going to keep my breath smelling good during Ramadan?” How often do you cover your mouth when talking with coworkers, peers, friends and/ or family members during the fasting period? Well, instead of fretting about it, let’s address some key factors so you can continue your fast while remaining comfortable with the ability to speak in the most confidence—minus the bad breath! During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world will be joining together in a fast from sunrise to sunset. One of the most common complaints during Ramadan is the bad breath that we all experience while refraining from food and drink. Causes of bad breath are due to factors that may be avoidable and others, unavoidable. For those who practice regular oral hygiene, there are 1,000 to 100,000 bacteria living on each tooth surface; however, for those who do not keep up with regular visits to the dentist and do not brush regularly, they can have anywhere between 100 million and 1 billion bacteria on each tooth. Within this month of reflection comes hefty feasts and a variety of delicious food; however, what one consumes will drastically affect the outcome of how one’s breath smells. So, while you’re inhaling your third piece of qatayef, stop and think how it may

actually cause that horrible stench the day after. Some foods that cause bad breath are onions, garlic, dairy, meat, fish, candy, mint and gum, coffee, juice, soda, olives, and butter. Smoking is another leading cause. The chemicals in tobacco smoke can remain in the mouth for lengthy periods of time which will cause bad breath. On the contrary, there are foods that help in alleviating oral odor such as: apples, leafy green vegetables, probiotic yogurt, parsley, basil, strawberries, melons, and ginger. You should also drink green tea and gulp down lots of water as they fight the growth of bacteria and act as a cleanser which encourages saliva production. Islam urges its followers to be hygienic, decent, and pleasant in both their appearance and smell. So, we should keep our mouth and body clean and free of any bad or horrible smell, especially when you are working with a non-Muslim who may accuse Islam or insult Muslims because of Ramadan fasting. During Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) lifetime, he (pbuh) and his Companions (Sahabah) used to have Siwak (Miswak or tooth stick) to keep their mouth fresh and clean. We must understand that the word “siwâk” does not just refer to the tree branches that are used as tooth sticks, but to the act of brushing the teeth itself. It is derived from the verb sâk, meaning to rub, clean, buff, or polish. [Tarh al-Tathrîb (2/63)] Some people assume that brushing the teeth while fasting during the month of Ramadan is discouraged on the basis of the hadith where Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “I swear by Him in whose hand is my soul, the Khaluf of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah (SWT) than the scent of musk.” [Sahih al-Bukhari (1893) and Sahih Muslim (1151)] The assumption that this hadith discourages brushing one’s teeth while fasting is incorrect. Because the Khaluf is the smell that comes from the stomach when it is empty of food and is not a smell stemming from the mouth. So during this blessed month, keep it clean and avoid bad breath. Save us all from the foul odor of the fly trap. Happy Ramadan!
