The Birth of Two Righteous Souls Converge Mawlid Al-Nabi and Jesus Christ As our bellies emerge over the tight fastenings of our belts after enjoying a delectable meal of roasted turkey and stuffing during our Thanksgiving feast, the fragrance of allspice and nutmeg are quickly traded in for candy canes and fresh evergreen. The halls shall be decked with boughs of holly and the collection of ornaments that was stored in an old UPS box will be taken down from the attic. ‘Tis the Christmas season and with a dash of red and green spirit, millions of Christians universally celebrate the miraculous birth of the son of Virgin Mary on December 25th—Jesus Christ. This year, the birth of Jesus Christ happens to fall on the same day with yet another joyous and momentous occasion, Al-Mawlid Al-Nabawi. Born on the 12th day of the Rabi’ Al-Awwal, the Islamic lunar calendar which Muslims continue to preserve and rely on, Prophet Muhammad stems from the lineage of Ishmael whose father Abraham was the patriarch of both Islamic and Christian traditions. Although nearly 600 years apart, both Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad maintained a common thread of similar missions, each respectively delivering hope and perseverance to their people who came from all walks of life, some seemingly more privileged than most by their colossal rankings within their communities like Abu Bakr alSiddiq, who is among the most beloved companions of the Prophet, or Matthew, a once despised tax collector who was guided by the grace of God to be among one of Jesus Christ’s twelve disciples. By effortlessly conjoining the two stark social classes that often plague our communities, people were flocking to the message of both Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad with a renowned purpose to serve God by removing the ego and its poisons and reclaiming humanity to its once simplistic nature. It is to harmonize in a collage of effort and willingness to succeed as an Ummah, or a united nation, that intends to “command what is righteous and forbid what is wrong (“recognized [as evil]”)” [Qur’an, 3:110]. This task of delivering Allah’s divine message; however, had and continues to have its share of difficulty, as Islamophobia crusades across the majority of media outlets as a means to destroy the ancient bridge that both Prophets have simultaneously built. In contrast of the current state that the message of Islam is facing, similar attitudes were practiced when Prophet Muhammad, who was the nephew of Abu Talib, one of the great leaders of the tribe Quraish, conveyed the revelations of God to the common folk of Makkah. The Quraish found him to be a great threat to their bureaucracy, and after attempting to bribe the Prophet with faulty rankings within their governance, some suggested to kill him. sence of a democratic nature, the Prophet and his followers had no choice but to leave Makkah and immigrate to Abyssinia in hopes of finding refuge in King Negus, who was reputable due to his neutral reasoning. A devout Christian by faith, King Negus willingly listened to verses from a chapter in the Qur’an that was exclusively dedicated to the noble virgin herself, Maryam (RA), and emotionally affirmed that the message clearly signified the state of his own faith. He then granted them refuge and protection under his own guardianship, painting an example of what interfaith unification signifies during a time of crisis. Through his guided judgement and his compassion, he understood that righteousness and godliness is a uniformed extension of what it means to be human and he did not allow himself to fall idle to his own self-image. On Christmas Eve, I tend to reflect as I appreciate the glowing nativity sets that people have placed outside of their houses. When Maryam (RA) was eased by the presence of Angel Gabriel, my eyes lovingly stare at the cradle that Jesus Christ was laid upon. The shepherd that he was to become, as many prophets have practiced throughout their lifetime, comforts me with his tender reminder to come back and contemplate on the person that I have uncovered in my desire to be of something. As the infant Prophet Muhammad, bundled in a wool of rawness, was handed over to his wet nurse to be raised in the pure deserts outside of the bustling paths that carry thousands of caravans across Makkah, the feeling of calmness edges over the horizon. Both Islam and Christianity stems from the same lineage, we show love, care, respect for one another, for both religions and those who practice. It was a silent night, a holy night, and two great stars were born among the same sky.

IDC’s Event

In Degensse of Christians (IDC)’s Natioanl Day of Action and Prayer service was held at St. George Antiochian Orthdox Chruch on December 17th, 2015. “IDC envisions a Middle East in which the human rights of every individual are protected and respected regardless of religious creed, and in which the ancient and diverse Christian communities of the Middle East can coexist and thrive peacefully in their native lands. IDC knows that the centuries old existence of Christianity in the Middle East serves as leaven in a complex and ever-changing region of the world. Christianity’s enduring presence in Middle Eastern societies is an agent of peace, development, diversity, and tolerance, bringing greater stability to the region and bridging cultural divides between the East and West.
