Mediterranean Festival
Festivals are a great way to get out and enjoy all summer has to offer. For the thousands of people who attend, festivals have become a source of affordable summer family fun. There’s music, games, rides and of course great food that entice the taste buds with traditional homemade specialties. The festivals teach us community living by celebrating each other’s happiness by providing a medium to foster new relationships. In addition, it allows the organization a way to raise funds for certain expansions or repairs that the facility may need and to help families that are in need. St. Mary’s Church and the Fuheis American Association have been fortunate to host their Second Annual Mediterranean Festival with a great success. The festival was founded and chaired by Faris Samawi, President of the Fuheis American Association, who is also a parish consul member at St. Mary’s Church. Mr. Samawi and his spectacular festival volunteers organized an event that was enjoyed by all. This free cultural fest featured homemade Middle Eastern foods and sweets, live Arabic 8

music, camel rides, and debkeh troop performances. It was held on August 21-23 on the St. Mary Church grounds off 127th and Ridgeland Ave in Palos Heights. Festival-goers delighted in sampling manageesh made to order on the saj (a domed or convex griddle), with flavorful zaatar (a Middle Eastern spice) or cheese grilled to perfection. In addition, traditional cuisine such as falafel – an amazingly tasty, deep-fried and seasoned vegetarian fritter, made from ground chickpeas, fava beans or both, kafta Kaboba savory, well-seasoned “hamburger” made with ground beef
ton candy, as well as bouncy play houses with obstacle course to test their speed and endurance. In addition, kids and adults delighted in experiencing there very first camel rides. The festival featured great live music provided by Nabil Nemeh and Ensemble, Anton Shamoon, Zaya al Iraqi and special guest appearances by Belal Rafati & Amjad Ziydat. In addition, bagpipes and tabla instruments (Arabic drums) resonated traditional music and folklore adding to the beauty and richness of Arabic music to festival-goers from all different nationalities.

Needless to say the Second Annual Mediterranean Festival was a great success. A big thank you to all the volunteers that helped and to all those who came out and enjoyed a beautiful weekend filled with fun, family and friends. Can’t wait to see you all next year!

Andrew Seo Making Chicagoland Work On Thursday, August 13, an event was held for Andrew Seo’s Campaign Kickoff Reception, the official announcement was presented to run for Water Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD). Many of his supporter attended the event; the event took place at Piccolo Sogo in Chicago, IL.
