Botox Treatment for Chronic Migraines By Nesreen Suwan, MD Ashraf AbdelJaber MS4

What is Migraine?

A migraine is a medical condition characterized by severe, painful headache that is usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light and sound. These headaches are usually pulsating and throbbing in nature and can involve any part of the head. More than 30 million Americans are affected. Migraine tends to affect people between the ages of 20-55 years of age but can also affect children and teenagers. Approximately 75% of all migraine sufferers have a family history of migraine. Recent research has showed that there are many factors that trigger migraines. Some of the factors include stress, insufficient sleep, certain medications, smoking, head trauma, weather changes, lack of exercise, red wine, fasting or skipping meals, and hormonal changes such as women during their menstrual cycle. Signs and Symptoms of Migraine Symptoms can differ with each person but can range from mild symptoms that lasts for a few hours to days or can be chronic in which patients experience a headache more than 14 days of the month. Symptoms include •Throbbing headache that intensifies with movement or physical activity •Unilateral and localized pain in frontal, temporal and ocular area •Headache lasts 4-72 hours •Nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite. •Sensitivity to light and sound 6

This condition can greatly affect family, work, and social life, so it is important to have a variety of effective treatment options available. Some medications have been found to help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines such as beta blockers, triptans, and NSAIDS.. However in 2010, the FDA approved Botox injections to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults

The idea began to spread among clinicians to use Botox as “off label” treatment for migraines and headaches. A study was conducted and showed that at 6 months, after two cycles of Botox treatment, those treated with Botox had on average eight less days of headaches each month. After 12 months, 70% of those treated had <50% the number of headaches that they had originally. This prompted the FDA to approve Botox for treatment of chronic migraines. Is Botox right for me? Patients who have headaches occurring on 15 or more days each month in which half of those episodes have migraine features such as vomiting, nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are eligible for treatment with Botox. It is important that patients have an informed discussion of their headaches and the options for treatment with a physician experienced in management of headaches. Dr. Suwan specializes in the treatment of headaches, pain and fibromyalgia. She is board certified in neurology, pain and headache medicine. She is highly recognized as a national speaker. She operates a headache and fibromyalgia clinic in Lisle and has privileges at
