Egyptian Diplomat meets with Local Offical Egyptian Consul General Maged Refaat met with Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos at the downtown office of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) to discuss some of Egypt’s challenges with water. The country is 90% dessert, does not get much rain, and receives most of its drinking water from the Nile River, all factors which make water there a precious commodity, as it is in most of the world. Commissioner Spyropoulos gave some background on MWRD, an award-winning, special purpose government agency responsible for wastewater treatment and stormwater management in Cook County, Illinois. MWRD’s mission is to protect our water environment, and is responsible for treating wastewater, and stormwater management for Chicago and 125 suburban communities. MWRD also operates the world’s largest water reclamation plant, as well as six other plants and 23 pumping stations. One of MWRD’s biggest historical accomplishments is reversing the flow of the Chicago River to protect Lake Michigan, our supply of drinking water. At MWRD’s facility in Stickney,

IL, more waste water and stormwater is treated than at any other facility in the world. Every day, Stickney treats the equivalent of 1,500 Olympic swimming pools of water. During a heavy rainfall, that number jumps to 7,500! In some cases, more than the entire amount of water treated in other countries. Consul General Refaat is a career diplomat and has represented Egypt in Chicago since 2011. His prior assignments include New York, Belgium, Bahrain, Russia, and Nigeria. He expressed his appreciation for the time and knowledge shared, and respectfully requested more information. He is happy to gather best practices from around the world
to help make Egypt a better place to live, work and raise a family. Commissioner Spyropoulos will continue working with Consul General Refaat, and will schedule a tour for him of the Stickney facility so he can see firsthand how waste water and stormwater are received and treated. The tour will show the logistics of water intake procedures, water aeration, how biosolids can be used, and will include a visit to the laboratories to see how industry water is regularly tested and monitored for contaminants, and a discussion about the potential for Stickney WRP to become energy selfsufficient. “It’s great to share ideas with leaders from other countries.
