Doors opened at 8pm and attendances of many Middle Easterner countries specially Palestinians, Syrians, Lebanese. The night started off with dinner, made by Al Hambra’s Chef Khair. The dinner includes Middle Eastern appetizer from Hummus, Baba Ganouj, Koba and grape leaves. Followed by a warm meal of mixed plate of traditional Middle Eastern rice and topped with mixed meat, last but not least deserts was served, leaving a Middle Eastern sweetness of Al Hambra. Not to mention a large hookah on the side was served also.

MWRD Commissioner Hosts Colombian Students Here To Learn About MWRD CHICAGO – Students from Colombia spent two weeks in Chicago learning about the practical applications of their areas of study, including sustainability and water reclamation. In addition to meeting with the Chicago Center for Green Technology, the group also visited cultural institutions such as the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium, and experienced the Chicago Latino Film Festival. MWRD Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos coordinated the visit for the students, and they had the opportunity to learn about MWRD in the boardroom where Commissioners decide on policy and help plan the agency’s future. Commissioner Spyropoulos also organized a special tour of the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant so the students can see firsthand the 14

process of water reclamation and treatment. “When these students specifically requested their visit include information about water reclamation, I don’t think they realized that they actually chose the best place in the country for
that. They were surprised to hear how much water our Stickney plant, the largest in the world of its type, treats on a daily basis. When they learned MWRD reversed the flow of the Chicago River, they were amazed”, said Commissioner Spyropoulos. The students’ amazement is typical.
Reversing the Chicago River has been deemed one of the greatest engineering accomplishments in history. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago was established in 1889 and is an award-winning, special purpose government agency responsible for wastewater treatment and stormwater management. M W R D’s mission is to protect the health and safety of the public in its service area, the quality of the water supply source (Lake Michigan), improve and protect the quality of water in watercourses, protect businesses and homes from flood damages, and manage water as a vital resource.
