F

or the seventh time, the Croatian athletes are participating under their own flag at the Mediterranean Games, a multi-sports event with the almost seventy year old tradition. These Games have a special significance because they are held in the time when the four-year rhythm is lost and when many are asking questions on their meaning and purpose in the future. But the Olympic flame that burns in female and male athletes from 26 countries on three continents should remain a guiding light for the future of the Mediterranean. Of course, the idea of the Mediterranean Games should be modernized and given wind in their sails by practical innovations and refinements. Medals won in the Mediterranean Games must brought back to the original glory, they should be included in athletes’ biographies with pride, as numerous Croatian athletes did once, while enriching their trophy collections. On this tradition I build the belief that Croatia will be very successful in Tarragona. Among our 99 male and female representatives, there are many notable names, led by winners of Olympic gold medals, for example - in shooting or athletics. I wish all the Croatian female and male athletes a successful performance and above all a personal satisfaction with the achieved results. I am sure that they will keep the Games in Tarragona in a beautiful memory and a valuable experience in their further career. Let it be a true festival of youth, sports and tolerance, presentation of skills through various disciplines and sports branches and above all - a demonstration of fair play and positive energy that will connect people from the Mediterranean in all the aspects of social activities in future.

6 XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018

Zlatko Mateša, PhD President of the Croatian Olympic Committee

I

remember with nostalgy the 1975 and the Mediterranean Games in Algeria, where I participated in football. At that time, the Games had a status of extremely important, prestigious and competitive event– and indeed they were. I remember the members of the National Handball, Athletics as well as Football Team – they were mostly the best female and male athletes of the former state. Participating at the Games, especially being a medal winner, was a respectable result that had its “weight” and valorization. Today, almost 40 years later, the Games have lost their value, their reputation and their meaning. Therefore, at the level of the European Olympic Committees, the Mediterranean Movement, and especially among the countries participating at the Games, a consensus should be reached on the purpose of the Mediterranean Games. The result achieved at the Games is neither of a criterion type nor it bring points that would be relevant for going to – for example – the European Games, it does not represent a criterion result for direct participation at the European Championships. Maybe it would be necessary to consider inclusion of athletes of up to 23 years of age in the Games, that the result achieved at the Mediterranean Games is the criteria for participating at - at least - one European Championships up to 23 years of age. Maybe, but that’s just a suggestion to consider.

Josip Čop, BSc. Econ. Secretary General of the Croatian Olympic Committee

What do we expect from Croatian athletes at the Mediterranean Games? From the younger ones to test their competitiveness in that environment, from the older ones to turn their experience into medals and from all the participants at the Games, a good and proper behavior - proud, knightly and fair play presentation of Our Beautiful Homeland.

Olympic Committee TODAY

T

he Croatian Olympic Committee, the highest sports body in Croatia, was founded in Zagreb on September 10 1991. The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee granted the Croatian Olympic Committee provisional recognition on January 17 1992, thus including it in the Olympic family and making it possible for Croatian athletes to participate under the Croatian flag in the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville and in the Games of the Olympiad in Barcelona that very same year. Members of the National Olympic Sports Federations are national sports associations (44 of them Olympic and 41 National Non-Olympic Sports Federations), 20 county sports associations and the City of Zagreb and 10 associations and institutions of interest for Croatian sport and the activities of the Croatian Olympic Committee. The Croatian Olympic Committee is a full member of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), the European Olympic Committees (EOC), the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG) and the European NonGovernmental Sports Organizations (ENGSO). The Croatian Olympic Committee is the founder of the Croatian Olympians Club (1993), the Croatian Olympic Academy (1996), the Sports Arbitration Council and Sports Arbitration Tribunal (1999), and the co-founder of the European Fair Play Movement (1994), the Croatian Athletes Foundation (2006), the Croatian Fair-Play Committee (2006), the Female Sports Coordinators Network (2006) and a number of other organizations belonging to the Croatian and international Olympic movement. A total of 85 Federations.

The first specialized digital sports channel in Croatia, Sports Television (Sportska televizija) began broadcasting its regular program with sports news exactly at 5 P.M. on April 4 2011. Croatian Olympic Committee introduced in 2012 on the website www.hoo.hr the national online news service called “Sports Croatia”. It provides direct, decentralized promotion of activities of COC members regardless of whether the Web, Facebook or blog page of members or athletes. Sports, along with local communities of the Republic of Croatia, is currently the only activity in which this independent public transmission of news is applied free of physical or content limitations. In 2013, the Croatian Sports Journalist Association presented a special award to the news service Sports Croatia.
