FEATURE SHE LIVES AN AMAZING LIFE!

SHE LIVES

AN AMAZING

LIFE

3 WAYS TO EMBRACE YOUR AMAZING LIFE

BY DR. N I COLE L ABE AC H

Do you live an amazing life? Rarely do I see women rushing to raise their hands to say, “Yes! I’m living an amazing life!” So what gives? Is the amazing life bypassing your address and the streets of other deserving women like you and me? Well, I say no! Instead, I raise my hand and say “Yes, my life is amazing!” It’s not the things that make it so; it’s the understanding that I hold the power to see, declare, own and embrace much of what makes it so. I hold the power of my own gratitude, dreams and joy in the palm of my hands and that makes me the ultimate keeper, narrator and orator of my own amazing. I choose to banish the illusion that my amazing must be devoid of struggle, adversity and challenge to be amazing. In my amazing, I can bury the word “perfection” in exchange for words like “free,” “worthy,” “lovable” and “loved.” I can see amazing every time I say “yes,” “thank you” and “well done.” I can experience amazing when I’m at rest and when I’m being, not just doing. More than ever, I can see how accessible my amazing life is and accept that it’s up to me to maintain it. With every portion of my journey I’ve received useful tools to help maintain my amazing. No matter where I am, what is or what isn’t, these three principles have yielded gifts that just

keep on giving. Firstly, I have a newfound relationship with self-compassion. It took a while, but I’m proud to say self-compassion and I are no longer strangers. In fact, we’ve become good friends over the past couple years. Nowadays, I neither apologize nor hide how cool we are with each other. I applaud and exercise the right to be compassionate toward my missteps, missed opportunities and personal disappointments. I don’t dwell, accuse or abuse myself with judgment, blame, ingratitude and harsh criticism. Instead, I’m kind to me. I dare to acknowledge and embrace my effort as a gift, no matter the outcome. I offer myself grace, gentleness and understanding—the same kind I so freely give to others. Self-compassion has given me a clearer lens from which to see how amazing I am and how amazing my life really is. Secondly, I realize my perceptions not only matter but significantly inform how I see and experience everything. I’m in charge of how I receive the world around me, including the disappointments, victories, obstacles, gifts, surprises, questions, delays, yeses and no’s. These things all need my interpretation to tell them who to be. I give them their value; that’s how amazingly powerful I am. My

perception offers the opportunity to see, hear, feel, taste and access my true reality that I may respond as a winner and active participant in my own amazing life. I choose how I perceive it all. In essence, the woman who perceives her life as amazing and the one who doesn’t are both right. Lastly, I accept my “yes” is priceless. I finally own the power of my yes as one that helps paint the canvas of my amazing life. Not yes to people please, seek validation or overcompensate. But, yes with the intention of engaging in this one-time opportunity at fully living my own life! Yes to vision. Yes to my self-worth. Yes to fun. Yes to service. Yes to insight. Yes to laughter. Yes to healthy relationships. Yes to receiving. Yes to self-care. Yes to forgiveness. Yes to vulnerability. Yes to grace. Yes to love. Yes to change. Yes to the smell of baked goods, an occasional ice cream cone and girl giggles. Yes to whatever God and my amazing, purposeful life are calling me to. You see, like you, this life of mine is not perfect, but that was never the requirement. Perfection was never the rule by which to measure life. So today I love, I breathe, I have my being and I choose to see the gift of me in my amazing life! How about you? Care to join me? SUMMER 2017 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  9

FEATURE BALL STATE UNIVERSITY

ONLINE STUDENT JOINS ON-CAMPUS STUDENTS

Students enrolled in Ball State University’s online programs know that being tutored for test preparation, receiving feedback from the Writing Center or consulting a librarian—the same opportunities afforded on-campus students—are just part of the online package. At least one online student made the most of that package of opportunities over spring break. Brianna Meyer, an Altoona, Iowa, resident who is working on a master of arts in applied behavior analysis online, joined 13 main-campus students for Ball State’s Alternative Spring Break in St. Louis.

ADVERTORIAL

It’s exciting to get to hang out with a group of people who are so prideful and get to live it every day. And they immediately accepted me in to the group. Alternative Spring Break takes students across the country to volunteer with nonprofits. This year, students worked with Kingdom House, a nonprofit that helps the economically disadvantaged in its immediate neighborhoods. The students helped with everything from weeding a community garden to teaching a cooking class for teens. The trip put Meyer in close contact with the families Kingdom House serves, which gave her the real-world experience she wanted for her degree. “It’s about people working together in order to make sure that their child has the best life that they can have,” she said. For Meyer, the week began with a 3 a.m. wakeup and a trip of more than 500 miles from Altoona to

Ball State’s campus in Muncie, Ind., before Meyer climbed in a van for another 300 miles to St. Louis, only to repeat the distance returning home a few days later. “I know a lot of bonding takes place on road trips,” she said. “I didn’t want to not know the people I was going to be living with for a week.” The fact that she was an online student didn’t set her apart from the rest of the group. “It’s exciting to get to hang out with a group of people who are so prideful and get to live it every day. And they immediately accepted me in to the group,” she said. “It wasn’t ‘Hey, you’re a stranger and come from far away,’ it was ‘Hey, you go to Ball State like us.’”

Meyer sees herself participating in more opportunities like the Alternative Spring Break— regardless of distance. It was part of a package her degree offered that she described as “just the right fit.” Already working in the field as an applied behavior analysis specialist, her master’s degree, once complete, will elevate her to a board-certified behavior analyst. Ball State’s online M.A. in applied behavior analysis is just one of more than 70 online undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates and licenses. BEAUTY STEAMY SUMMER ESSENTIALS

The best beauty products to beat the heat and look your best!

BY SAR AH BL ACKM A N

When summer becomes oppressively hot and humid, maintaining a fresh, polished look is challenging. Our tendency is to try and work against nature, which leaves us at less than our best and way too fussy. While many products can help us look our coolest, it’s time to embrace our dewy skin and curly manes! Here are four products that will help us do just that and look like our most natural, beautiful selves.

Garnier Style Sleek and Shine Humidity Spray Sometimes only a sleek style will do, so we must do our best to tame our lion mane in muggy weather conditions. If your hair is on the more thin and straight side, Garnier Humidity Spray is a great option for you. In addition, if you have a head of gorgeous curls, this will act as a barrier for any frizzing to take place for a hairdo that’s left loose. For updos, it can also add a nice shine and keep those hairline fuzzies at a minimum. This product will keep you as sleek as your style possibly can be.

Elnett Satin Hairspray Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer

If it’s coverage you are worried about, do not let the word “moisturizer” scare you off. Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisterizer is truly a smooth and lightweight foundation that gives incredible coverage. Its breathabilily makes you feel like you have nothing on your face and includes a bonus of SPF 20. In addition, it’s a miracle for those beach days when you don’t wish to wear makeup, but you need to conceal a few flaws.

12  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SPRING 2017

This is the way to finish any summer hairdo: a true miracle in a can. It’s not sticky, and it won’t make your hair look or feel crunchy. It will hold without wavering. You’ll be able to brush through it without pain at the end of the night, and you won’t have to wash your hair in the morning because it won’t leave any residue. Even if you’re a hairspray hater, this product will turn you. It’s pure hair sorcery and the best beauty product you will ever own!

Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer I’m going to throw a cosmetic contradiction your way: What if instead of continuosly caking powder on our T-zones we illuminate our faces instead? It’s called “strobing,” and it’s a thing. Adding a light shimmer to our nearly naked skin leaves a radiant glow instead of a pasty, cakey mess. Gone are the days of flat matte skin, and Josie Maran’s Illuminizer is a highlight delight. Dab it on your cheekbones, middle of your forehead and down the nose. Leave your compact in hibernation until the winter. Embrace your dewy skin!

FASHION JACKIE’S FAITH JEWELRY

Jackie’sJEWELRY Faith BY NATAL E I GH MO S L E Y

IT’S IMPORTANT TO TRY, WORK HARD AND FOLLOW YOUR HEART – BUT SUCCESS ISN’T GUARANTEED OR FOR EVERYONE.

Jackie Halstead knew what she was passionate about, but turning her passion into reality took time. She’s always known she’s an artist, but life had other plans. From journalism to retail, work has taken her for a ride. Each job helped shape her into who she is today.

Through much determination, Halstead started her jewelry line (found at www.jhalstead.ca). She combined her passion for art with her love for God to create Jackie’s Faith Jewelry. Hope for Women: How did experience in various fields and hobbies shape who you are? Jackie Halstead: It taught me to be flexible. I’m able to jump in with almost any situation and cope. HFW: What inspired you to start a faith-based jewelry line? JH: When I worked at Michaels as a jewelry instructor, I was designing something and the idea started from there. I thought a way to show God that I love Him and appreciate what He’s done for me was to design a line that had positive messaging. My work carries a lot of spiritual themes like love, hope and kindness. I really believe in the concept and hope a lot of people support the line.

HFW: If you could give one word of advice to aspiring artists what would you say? JH: This question is one my 10-year-old student at Michaels taught me. It’s important to try, 14  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

work hard and follow your heart – but success isn’t guaranteed or for everyone. We live in a world where everyone wants to be famous. Don’t get me wrong; go for your dreams, but be realistic. I’m still coming to terms with my goals, and hopefully I’ll be successful, but you never know, so be happy either way.

HFW: What is one of the biggest challenges with starting your own business? JH: Financing is the biggest hurdle. You have to be creative and resourceful. Apply for scholarships. There are many resources such as the YMCA that you can get support from. I benefited from women’s entrepreneurship programs. HFW: What role has your faith played in your life? JH: My faith is very important to me. My mother, who died 15 years ago, wasn’t your typical Christian. She loved to entertain and invite people into our home. That hospitality really taught me about giving and sharing. My mother exposed me to a Christianity that wasn’t preachy and hypocritical or fake. I owe a lot to God and think He knows that I’m sincere with my desire to start a faith-based line. HFW: What do you hope to accomplish in the future? JH: I would love to do more charity work. I volunteered in Africa in 2008 and started an award for caregivers who take care of ALS patients. I hope my business takes off. “More money, NO big problems” is my motto.

FASHION SNAZZY SUMMER TRENDS

SUMMER TRENDS This summer’s fashion forward trends are super crush worthy! From breezy Bohemianinspired dresses to structured suits, there are absolutely no rules. Wear what you love and have a ton of fun flirting with these six highlighted styles. You look good, girl.

6 TRENDS TO KEEP YOU LOOKING HOT B Y S AR AH B L ACKMAN

#1: STRIPE OUT This summer is all about stripes. Striped statement pieces that are big and bright are all the rage. With this trend, the wider the stripe and the brighter the color, the better. Please don’t fret about wearing horizontal stripes with the fear that you may make yourself look big. That’s not a thing. Be bold. Keep calm and stripe on!

#2: GO GINGHAM The freshest gingham prints are bringing back this look. This classic print has been updated with the use of large and bright checkered patterns. Choose pieces that stand strong on their own and pair them with basics. A gingham skirt paired with a crisp white shirt and some funky heels looks super summery and cool. It’s a preppy print, so an unexpected accessory will perfectly balance this look.

#3: POMPOM POWER Pompoms are popping up on all kinds of accessories this summer. Whether they are pure puffballs or tassel-like versions, pompoms are a fun and colorful way to add a little whimsy to any ensemble. From espadrille-inspired sandals to large straw bags, make sure to keep your outfit pretty basic if you add a little pom flair. Let those little balls of joy steal the show. Pomp up your style with some pompoms!

#4: SWEET TEE The old-school T-shirt has made a comeback in a major way. Vintage bands, messages, bold logos and prints, the possibilities are endless for what you can you can rock with your tees. Jeans, skirts or even trousers to dress it up a bit. Slim black pants and a colorful tee paired with sharp heels and a black blazer is a fun look for a night on the town. Too cool for school!

#5: BOHO BABE Dress to impress with a breezy Boho frock! Bohemian-inspired dresses are a beautiful way to stay cool and comfortable when the weather is hot and humid. A soft palette of colors and feminine details can create a super sweet look. An off-the-shoulder silhouette with a slim choker makes an easygoing getup for concerts, barbeques or a fun day!

#6: SUIT UP The power suit is back, but this time it’s a bit softer around edges. Shades of pink, whether pastel or magenta, are super chic. You can mix and match the blazer and slacks with other items in your wardrobe or you can go full force in the whole suit. Wear a camisole or T-shirt underneath, or make it sexy and show some skin by buttoning up the jacket alone. SUMMER 2017 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  15

FEATURE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE

WOMEN WHO

INSPIRE

MEET RHONDA GIPSON-WILLIS BY AN G E LI A L. WH I T E

Rhonda Gipson-Willis is the cofounder and CEO of Skylight Leadership, a leadership development, coaching and training firm. Her education in psychology and experience of more than two decades in the mental health field help her propel her clients to achieve their dreams. As a wife and mother of four daughters, Gipson-Willis has both professional and personal experience to share with women and inspire them to reach for the stars. Hope for Women: Who has been your biggest inspiration? Rhonda Gipson-Willis: I know this is going to sound very cliché, but my biggest inspiration is my mother, Freda Gipson. When I was a little girl she always made it clear that she believed in me and saw something in me even when I didn’t see it in myself. Her belief in me from the beginning inspired me to want to make her proud. HFW: What do you do to encourage others? RGW: I see past where people are or what they have been through to who and what they have the potential to be, and I don’t mind telling them. 18  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

From the outside looking in, it appears that I have it all. I have a great husband, amazing children, a successful business with one of my best friends and always seem so happy. Despite that, I still struggle. I learned a long time ago that owning my flawsomeness (flawed awesomeness) was far easier than pretending I had it all together. It’s exhausting to act super-human. As a coach, I see it as both a duty and an honor to push my clients past their fear-induced comfort zones into the life of their dreams. I am an example that, though it won’t always be easy, it is doable and will be worth it. HFW: What is an obstacle you have overcome? RGW: I’ve recently come to terms with and I realized I was being affected by depression and anxiety. As a coach and licensed clinical social worker who has worked as a therapist, it took me a while to not only recognize what I was dealing with but also get the help I needed. It would resolve itself and would then come back with no real precipitant. That completely threw me for a loop

because it was something I had no control over that was jeopardizing not only my business but my sense of self. I had work to do so I could go about doing my job, which I knew would bless others and change their lives, and I was neglecting to take care of myself so I could do that. While I have never judged anyone else for struggling with mental health issues, I was acting as if I had some super powers that would override it. HFW: What’s one message you wish all woman could hear? RGW: I really wish women would hear that their dreams are valid, worthy and possible. I speak to so many women who have become people who have forgotten what makes their hearts sing. They’ve gotten wrapped up in being everything for everybody else and don’t even remember what they like to do, let alone what their dreams once were. Or, they’ve allowed fear to stop them from going for it. It’s OK to do what makes you happy. It’s OK to go after your heart’s desire. It’s OK to step out of the fear that tends to be the culprit that keeps us from living the life of our dreams. The world needs that version of you, You need that version of you. You DESERVE it.

How Taking a Risk

Can Lead You to Your Destiny BY HE IDI CH I AVAR OLI

It’s been 30 years, but I can still remember the fear. A beautiful Fourth of July at the pool with cousins, aunts and uncles. Everyone splashing and laughing, celebrating the holiday that commemorates freedom. Everyone except me. I clutched the smooth sides of the pool as if my life depended on it. Orange bubble firmly strapped to my back, I should have been free to let go. To take this risk that would surely lead to fun and independence. But fear held me in place. I stayed in that spot for hours. I remember thinking, “The whole party is happening right around me, and I’m missing it because I’m just too scared.” I never did let go of the ledge that day. Yet that moment—that feeling of not fully engaging as life went on around me—stayed with me forever. And it began to form my view on taking risks. Life was precious. How did I want to live it? Was the Creator of this vast, beautiful universe calling me to safety, or was He calling me to step out of my comfort zone? To engage in the party and let go of the ledge? To fully live,

even in an uncertain world? But embracing life in the fullest way possible required taking risks. It required letting go of the side of the pool to swim free, however that might look. For me, it was going parasailing. It was leaving my husband and two sons to board a plane to go to a writers’ conference. It was suffering the sting of rejection after rejection from literary agents, being told I wasn’t good enough but still taking the risk of trying again. The heroine in my novel, Freedom’s Ring, lives in fear after the Boston Marathon bombing not only denied her a marathon finish but crippled her niece and tore apart her family. She chides herself for her fear. For not being strong enough to make amends with her family. For not being strong enough to run again. I relate well to Annie. Her refusal to engage in life, especially when it’s hard, reminds me of my automatic refusal to let go of the edge of that pool and swim free. But thanks to Jesus – for both me, Annie and you – our stories don’t have to end in fear and imprisonment. Because that’s not who our God is. And He has plans and a

destiny for us that are far greater than sitting on the sidelines. Sure, we fear taking risks. We fear rejection and losing security. But it’s the times when we push through our comfort zones that we grow emotionally and spiritually. And while we may have an end result in mind, both succeeding and failing are important. Failing builds character. It makes us more human, more beautiful even. And is that not our destiny? To embody the fullest measure of what it means to be human? We’re called to embrace this crazy life and wrestle from it every ounce of beauty and meaning. But that may require taking a risk. Letting go of that ledge in order to swim—or run— free. MONEY TAMIKA’S TIPS

TAMIKA’S TIPS FOR

SMART

MONEY MANAGEMENT BY TA MI K A S T E MB R I DG E

20  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

We have all heard the saying “a goal without a plan is just a wish.” Unfortunately, when it comes to women and finances we are unknowingly, unintentionally and unnecessarily wishing our way into financial ruin simply because we fail to set concrete goals, develop solid plans and, most importantly, make the lifestyle adjustments to make our financial dreams come true. I am working hard to help change this trend. I believe that money is a tool for life. If we don’t use it to create the life that we want, we are short-changing ourselves. It is time for women to take our futures more seriously. It is time for women to take decisive action toward setting and achieving financial goals. If we start taking incremental steps now, we can take bigger steps later to dramatically change our collective future. Here are some tips that have helped me take control of my financial life, and I share them with people as I travel around the country spreading the dfree® message.

MONEY TAMIKA’S TIPS TIPS FOR SMART MONEY MANAGEMENT:

IDENTIFY YOUR BIGGEST FINANCIAL CHALLENGE This could be overspending on inessential items, eating out too often, not knowing where you spend your money or perhaps not making enough money. Once you identify your biggest challenge, take immediate action to overcome it. Decide to change your behavior. Identify ways to earn additional income, or alleviate certain bills. Commit to change because this is a commitment to your overall future.

TRACK YOUR SPENDING I suggest that people track their spending for one month to see their patterns and money leaks. However, you will have major “aha moments” by tracking your spending just one week. Write down what you buy, how you paid for it and why you made that purchase. When considering the “why, keep in mind these three types of spending: compensatory spending, when you spend to fill a void (think “retail therapy”); conspicuous spending, when you buy items based on perceived status they give you (think keeping up with the Joneses); and, confused spending when you really don’t know where you spend your money (think – leaving the house with $50, coming home with $5 and having nothing to show for it).

NAIL DOWN AND EVALUATE YOUR BUDGET To get the clearest picture of your finances, organize your monthly budget by the following categories, income, bills (necessities), debt (credit cards, revolving accounts, student loans – anything that should eventually be paid off) and lifestyle spending (consistent expenses for personal wellbeing, such as grooming, travel, fitness, etc.).

ADJUST YOUR LIFESTYLE SPENDING Most financial challenges aren’t financial at all. It’s all about how we manage our daily lives. You have to make hard choices about the few things you can consistently afford that are necessary for your personal well-being. It can’t be

ADVERTORIAL buying shoes. AND weekly hair salon appointments, AND bi-weekly massages, AND yearly vacations. You have to make thoughtful choices. In dfree®, we call this living on a spending plan. It allows you to meet your goals but still enjoy your life!

STICK TO THE SCRIPT Once you have a spending plan or budget, commit to it and do not waver. Give yourself three months to follow your budget, and then evaluate your progress. I am sure you will find that, at minimum, your lifestyle has improved, your feelings about money and spending have adjusted and your savings have increased. CAREER TURN YOUR HOBBY INTO A BUSINESS

TURN YOUR HOBBY B Y C HRI S T Y W RI G HT

INTO A BUSINESS From sewing baby clothes to upcycling old thrift store furniture, hobbies are turning into side businesses for more and more people. And with the everincreasing Etsy population as well as endless free social media platforms, launching a side business is easier than ever before. You don’t even have to be an aggressive go-getter with a start-up and investors to make money on your own terms. You can market your product from the comfort of home with nothing more than your skill and a Facebook page. The ease of turning your hobby into a business is also why, for many people, it happens by accident. For example, you post that painting you made for your sister to Facebook, and then through all the shares and likes you get more requests. As you begin to fulfill more and more orders, you eventually realize, “Hey! I can make money at this while doing something I love to do anyway!” The natural growth most side business owners experience sweeps talented 22 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

and passionate people into a form of entrepreneurship they may not have otherwise considered. But with the ease of getting into a side business also comes a very common challenge. Since it starts as a hobby, it’s often very tempting for people to call it a business but continue treating it like a hobby. That’s the main mistake people with side businesses make. So the first step to turning your hobby into a business is this: Treat it as a business. Understand the difference between a hobby and a business. A business makes you money. A hobby costs you money. It sounds simple, but many people miss this reality. They say things like, “Oh, I don’t care about the money. I just do it because I love it!” Of course a hobby is something you should love, but you also have to realize that love isn’t enough to make a business work. You also need profits. Now, if you want to build a line item into your budget for your hobby and continue to fund it, great! But if you

want to share your gift with the world long-term, you have to make a profit in order to continue doing it. Profits are critical not only to your finances, but they also help you justify the time invested in your passion when you’re away from your family each week. If it’s not making you money, it’s pretty tough to justify spending 10, 20 or 30 hours a week on something that has no financial return just because you love it. Both a hobby and a business can and should be fun, but if it’s not making money it’s not a real business that can grow or last. You need to recognize and accept that in order for your business to work, it has to make you money. Once you understand this, you can build your business in a way that will keep costs down, increase revenue and ultimately create a profit for you. It’s those profits that enable you to continue to do what you love to do and to share that love with the marketplace. And that is good business!

Sanya Richards-Ross has been in the public eye for years. Richards-Ross started running at age 7 and came to the United States from Jamaica when she was 12. Later as a college athlete at the University of Texas, she excelled. In 2008, she placed third in the Olympics, in spite of being favored to win. When she returned to the 2012 Olympics, Richards-Ross did in fact win the gold medal in the 400-meter race. But Richards-Ross is more than just a fast runner. These days, she has slowed down and retired from running track. She is far from idle, however. In June her book, “Chasing Grace: What the Quarter Mile Has Taught Me About God and Life,” was released. In August, she’ll start another big adventure into

FEATURE SANDRA RICHARDS-ROSS

Are you having any special cravings? No! It’s so funny. I have had such a boring pregnancy and uneventful, which I think is very good. But, no, I don’t have any cravings and I’ve been resting well and no morning sickness or nausea, so it’s pretty good.

Do you have a favorite Scripture? Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which gives me strength.”

motherhood. She recently took time to sit down with Hope for Women and share some of lessons she talks about in her book along with her plans for the future. HOPE FOR WOMEN: Your new book, “Chasing Grace,” is about what you have learned about God and life throughout your athletic career. What are some of those lessons? SANYA RICHARDS-ROSS: I’ve learned so many lessons. It’s funny because before I started writing this book, I had these preconceived ideas of what I wanted to share. And it kind of just evolved into this inspirational kind of memoir. I shared some of my difficult experiences and how I felt like God’s grace was always there for me, including the disappointment in 2008 when I was favored to win the Olympics and I won the bronze. I really, really, really felt that devastation and just that low of expectations that don’t go the way you hope. Thank God I had my family and my faith to pull me through that period. I struggled with an autoimmune disease for a couple of years and dealt with body issues and just a lot during that period as well. I learned the true meaning of beauty and really loving yourself through that period. But, ultimately I just learned to persevere, trust the timing of my life and trust that God was always hearing my

prayers and really doing things that were always working together for my good. HFW: Do you consider that just a season to help you grow? SRR: Absolutely! I think it’s those moments that truly test us. Sometimes we go through experiences that the devil could use for evil or to keep you in that place of shame or guilt. But when you invite God into your journey, He turns it around and uses it for something positive. I feel like that’s what I’ve experienced a lot in my life. I’ve had seasons of disappointment or failures or tough choices. And because of those experiences, I drew closer to God and learned I can’t do this life journey on my own. I need Him. HFW: How did your childhood in Jamaica prepare you for your journey through the ups and downs of your career? SRR: I lived in Jamaica until I was 12. I’m very fortunate to have a nuclear family. My mom and dad have been married for over 30 years. I can’t say enough about them and how much they committed and sacrificed for me to live my dream on the track. Their love is really what prepared me and gave me a glimpse of God’s love. My parents always loved me unconditionally. I didn’t have to win races to earn their love. And they were always there with me when things

went well or when things didn’t go the way I wanted them to. I think ultimately their support is the reason I was able to have so much success on the track. HFW: The Olympic games in Beijing in 2008 didn’t go well for you, but four years later in London you won gold. What happened in between those two games? How do you keep from getting discouraged during hard times? SRR: That’s a big part of my book where I talk about those four years: the lessons I learned and how I persevered. I don’t want to give away too much from the book, but it really was just learning the lessons of humility and trusting God. Track and field has been like a metaphor for my life and how God loves us. He does want us to have the victory and not on the track but in life. Being able to have that experience was once again a chance to see how much God loves us. When you work hard and you stick with it and you don’t give up, you can be successful. HFW: Life is filled with transitions. You’ve gone through some professionally, including retirement in 2016, and now you’re getting ready to transition to motherhood. What do you do to help yourself through transitions and stressful times? SRR: For me, transition really begins with the mind. I had started to prepare SUMMER 2017 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  25

FEATURE SANDRA RICHARDS-ROSS myself mentally for retiring from the sport. It helped me remember that track was just what I did, but it wasn’t who I was. I was grateful for that time and for that platform to get to glorify God through my gifts on the track. But for about a year, I started to wrap my mind around the fact that eventually every athlete has to retire. You can’t run fast forever. I saw my final season on the track as kind of like a farewell tour, and I really enjoyed it. I think that whenever you’re transitioning, if you can – sometimes transitions happen and we don’t have a choice – but if you can, the first thing you do is prepare for it mentally. That really helps me a lot. I’ve always wanted to be a mother. I had to put it on hold for my career, because it would be hard to have a baby and still be an athlete. My husband and I have both been patient and now it feels like the perfect season. We both feel extremely blessed. We’re super excited to pass on some of the lessons that we’ve learned and embark on this wonderful journey of parenthood. HFW: All women can relate to struggling with body image. In your new book, you open up about your own struggles with body shaming. What words of wisdom or advice do you have for other women? SRR: I’m so grateful I went through that time. I’ve been blessed that a byproduct of my training and hard work was I was always fit and always in shape, though I wasn’t completely ignorant to women who struggled with body issues. When I went through that time with myself where I was having really bad lesions on my skin and mouth ulcers and I felt very uncomfortable in my own skin, of course it made me have an experience like a lot of women have. The first thing is to just be compassionate, especially in the world we live in today where the rhetoric is 26  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

so negative, the words are so harsh and we try to convey that we’re perfect. It’s just about having compassion for other women and then having compassion and love for yourself. We have to remember that God made us in His image and His likeness. In His eyes we are perfect, and we are beautiful. That’s not always easy. It’s not always easy to feel great about yourself when you’re going through certain things. Ultimately I think loving yourself and staying positive through those tough times is really what helps me. I had a lot of good people, too. For example, I had a really bad lesion on my leg. I’ll never forget my husband made a joke, and we just laughed and laughed. Then he told me, “Baby, you’re beautiful.” It was good to have people in my corner who also kept me encouraged. And ultimately I learned that outer beauty is fading. It’s really inner beauty – loving other people and being selfless – that shines through and makes you beautiful, too. HFW: How has your faith played a role in your career and personal life? SRR: It’s everything. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to bounce back and even stand on the track in 2012 if it weren’t for my faith. I believed the dreams I had in my heart when I was 9 years old to be an Olympic champion were from God and if I trusted in Him that it would happen. I don’t have that much courage if it weren’t for God. The stories I share in the book are all just leaning on God and having the courage to follow through on the plans that I think He has for my life. That’s what allowed me to finish my career strong and enjoy all my experiences. And especially in my personal life, my faith has always guided me. I remember when I met my husband, we were in college and our first date we went to Bennigan’s on Saturday and to church on Sunday. And I was like,

“He’s the one.” HFW: Do you have a strong family of faith as well? SRR: I actually didn’t really come to understand my faith and find Jesus and my love for Christ until I moved to Florida. My Aunt Maureen is the one who introduced me to the church. My mom now is an avid Christian as well. I wouldn’t say I was in the church when I was really young. I was introduced into the church around 12 or 13. I was baptized when I was 13 and now have my own walk with Christ. My dad is a great man and he’s a Rastafarian. The Rastafarian beliefs are very similar to the Christian beliefs. It’s a little bit different, but I feel the great same morals and love of God. HFW: What’s up next for you? SRR: I’m incredibly excited about the book. I hope I can go around and do speaking engagements to encourage people to stay on their journey. I’m excited the Zondervan gave me the opportunity to record the audio for my book. It’s cool to hear my story with my voice. I’m also very excited about motherhood. I plan to take a little time to be down and love on my son and adjust to being a mother. I’m still doing the commentating with NBC. I’ll be calling track meets. I just love it. It’s a new way for me to contribute to my sport, and I really enjoy that. I’m also a Nike brand ambassador, so I do a lot of work with Nike. And I have a few businesses in Austin, so I keep myself busy. I love working, I love moving, I love doing. I feel like to work is to be blessed. We’ll see what opportunities come. The book is my number one priority right now and, hopefully, to be able to have that message touch a lot of people’s hearts.

RELATIONSHIPS FAITH UP!

FAITH UP! 10 ways to build your inner spirit when it’s low BY V E T TA C A S H

28  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

“Life happens” is a catch-all phrase that describes the ups and downs of daily living. Although life does happen, you can take a bold stand that life will not rob you of your peace and spiritual health. Making a protective decision for your spiritual well-being is a start that must be followed by taking intentional actions. Caring for your spirit when times are good positions your spirit to take care of you if and when times are bad. Here are 10 steps to nurture your spirit.

OCTAVIA SPENCER FAITH UP! RELATIONSHIPS

Make spiritual health a daily priority. Just like your physical body, your spirit needs daily maintenance and nourishment to ensure its optimum health. Start and end each day with prayer, worship and/or reading spiritbuilding resources. Feed your spirit good stuff every day. Decide what you believe and commit to it. Being a Sunday-only believer is self-sabotaging. Be all-in with what you believe and practice it every day all day. Doing so sends a consistent message to your spirit that “I am a woman of faith” and boosts your confidence that God is always with you. Talk the talk. Words are powerful, so be sure to speak life to your daily situations. Train yourself to be positive and require the same from your closest circle of influence. Declare a personal fast. Fasting trains your mind and body to focus on your spirit. Consider doing a weekly or monthly personal fast so you can heighten your sensitivity to your spiritual health. Pray without ceasing. Create a lifestyle of praying often and also positioning yourself to hear from God. Hearing often requires you to get still and quiet. Find a few minutes to be quiet every day.

8

Be grateful. Gratitude is an instant spirit builder. Develop a habit of being grateful every single day. Keep a gratitude journal to record the wonderful things that are happening in your life.

9

Be generous. Sharing what you have (material and monetary things) tells your spirit that your true source for living is bigger than you.

10

Love yourself. God loves you. Loving yourself is simply agreement with God, and it trains you to agree with Him in other areas of your life.

RELATIONSHIPS MARRIAGE SHOULDN’T BE 50-50

MARRIAGE SHOULDN’T BE How to tame your selfcenteredness to honor both your spouse and God BY LUCI LLE WI LLI AM S

I was immersed—okay, obsessed—with a writing assignment. Mike arrived home. I greeted him and went back to writing. “I’ll put the trashcan back.” What? Oh no! Putting it away was the one thing I told him I would take care of today. It wasn’t just any trashcan—it was the one to his man cave, aka remodeled trailer, in our backyard. Going in there is a bit creepy and it can only be locked from the outside and it always takes me multiple attempts. I really don’t like going out there. Hey, you’ve got a writing deadline. This is how you get your work done. So, what? He can put his own trashcan away. If you didn’t get obsessed you’d never get anything done. As I typed away, he went into the kitchen and cleaned up my mess from lunch and afternoon coffee. Just keep working; he doesn’t mind doing the dishes. He’s a little crazy about keeping the kitchen clean. That’s one less thing for me to do now. Mike opened the refrigerator. Wow, I’m really hungry. I need to eat. But he’s in there now…[pause]…he’s hungry…[pause]…he’s hungry…PULL IT TOGETHER, WOMAN! You are really blowing it here! You told him you’d put that stupid trashcan away and you didn’t. You left a mess, and he cleaned it. 30  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

50-50

And now he’s getting his own dinner, and you’re sitting at your computer oblivious to the fact that your husband is home after working very hard all day. He’s been so kind, and he needs your attention—he deserves your attention! I closed my computer. “Honey, I am so sorry. I told you I’d put that trashcan away and I didn’t. And thank you for cleaning up after me; I should have done it. Let me make you dinner. You go sit down and relax.” Evening saved. I am innately selfish. Daily, even after 34 years of marriage, I have to tame the selfish, nasty beast within. In a successful, thriving marriage we turn off the noise of the selfish beast within all of us. Marriages that go the distances are not comprised of those who think of themselves first or those who think of marriage as 50-50—not the good ones anyway. We need to avoid negotiating with our spouse, as in, “I’ll do this for you if you do [fill in the blank] for me. I did my 50 percent, now you do yours.” To go the distance—and make it to the happily-ever-after-tilldeath-do-us-part finish line—we need to quiet the selfish beast within and be other-centered. When you begin to keep score of what you get from your spouse, you put your

marriage at risk. Giving our marriage 100 percent, giving it our all, beckons selflessness and total commitment. Putting away a trashcan can seem like a trivial thing, but trivial matters can add up to huge divides as we decide to do our half waiting on our spouse to give their half. Divorce court is 50-50. A marriage that honors God is 100 percent. If you’ve been told that marriage is 50-50, think again. Going into marriage with a 50-50 mindset will set you on a course for a doomsday disaster. Never settle for 50-50. You’ve got to give it your all. As you tame the self-centered, me, me, me attitude try asking your beloved these questions: • What can I do for you? • How can I make your day better? • What do you need from me today? When we honor and serve our spouse— even in the trivial—the opportunity for a collision with a doomsday disaster most certainly will be demolished. Give your marriage 100 percent today and every day, and watch your marriage illuminate into a beautiful and majestic and magical wonderland. Demolish the idea of 50-50. Replace with a 100-100 mindset. For more tips to safeguard your marriage, pick up a copy of From Me to We by Lucille Williams from your favorite bookstore.

RELATIONSHIPS WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS DOING TO OUR FRIENDSHIPS

What social media is doing to our friendships: AD APT E D E XCE R PT F R O M NE VER UNF R I END ED : THE SECRE T TO FIN DING AN D KE E P IN G L A STI NG F RI END SHI PS BY L IS A -JO BAK E R

The Internet has complicated our relationships with an already complicated fear—the fear of missing out or being left out, the fear of being excluded, rejected or ignored. On purpose. Because while decades ago we might have been the last person picked for the dance squad, debate team, art project or sleepover, at least the only people who would have known or cared enough to comment on it were limited to the people who actually knew us in real life. Not so today. The Internet allows us to zoom in on the lives of friends and strangers alike until we’re nose to nose with what we missed, who didn’t invite us and how much fun happened without us. This fear has the grisly honor of having been elevated to pop cult status and awarded its own online acronym— FOMO—or Fear of Missing Out. I think it’s what we all want. Not to feel lonely. To live a life full of the opposite of loneliness. We want welcome and closeness and connection and invites for hot chocolate and evenings spent catching up and mornings that warm us with the leftover glow from time spent with people who love us.

We want to be seen.

FOMO

But we live in a world saturated by images with a million different stories and faces and Instagram accounts and Facebook pages and Pinterest boards and Snapchats all competing for the same real estate—to rise to the surface of what catches the eye. A million people longing to be seen. Social media has turned all of us to some degree or another into Peeping Toms who spend hours of every day watching from the outside of the window what’s happening inside the lives of people we know and often people we don’t. And what we want and what we experience morph into two very different sides of the same coin—we want connection, but what we experience instead is loneliness. To decapitate the lie of being left out, we need to find its head. And if I pried open my heart, I believe I’d find two venomous fangs buried deep in that soft tissue pumping all the poison of a lifetime of the same message in a million different versions—the message that I have been left out on purpose—into my blood stream and around my body with a vengeance.

I am in desperate need of an antidote when I can’t trust my own heart.

Jesus is the only One who can give us hearts of truth, hearts of flesh, hearts that aren’t poisoned beyond recognition by the lie of having been left out. Hearts that He calls by name and that believe they are seen. But first comes the heart transplant. And heart transplants are delicate procedures.…If we want our living hearts to survive the transplant, we have got to demote our social media status, our obsession with inclusion and our fear of missing out and get it OUT of the hallowed place. We have worshipped at the altar of inclusion when we were built to worship at the altar of the only living God. Living tied to clicks and likes and friend requests on Facebook will drain the life out of us. But our hearts will easily beat in time to the holy rhythm that hallows God over and above everything else, especially ourselves, because it’s what we were built for—to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Five Tips to Implement FUN Back to School Family Traditions 32  32 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

This year our school is starting 10 days earlier than before. I guess we will be thankful at the end of the school year when we are starting our summer break in May. To most kids, summer is the most exciting time of the year. No waking up early, no uniforms and lots of splashing around at the pool or beach. But like all good things, summer comes to an end, and we parents are left with the responsibility of helping our children embrace a new school year. My 9-year-old daughter Madison is over-themoon excited about seeing her friends again,

starting fourth grade and enjoying our back to school traditions. Although she’s had an amazing summer, she truly is looking forward to the things we do to make going back to school fun. Family traditions are special and not just for Christmas morning. In our home, we make a big deal about going back to school. I strongly believe if you keep it fun, exciting and with a bit of suspense, your children tend to be more engaged and enthusiastic about returning to school. Collaborate with your children and start implementing your own traditions this new school year.

Family traditions are special and not just for Christmas morning. BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING. Spending time with our children means the world to them! If possible, go shopping for school supplies together and allow your child to take the lead. You can use this opportunity to teach valuable lessons in budgeting, using coupons and saving money. After we’ve spent the day checking off the school supply list, Madison looks forward to organizing her school supplies in a colorful new container and writing her name on everything with a Sharpie.

I love shopping for the new nightgown. It usually reflects my daughter’s personality, her favorite things and how she’s grown. We’ve gone from pink and purple nightgowns of Disney princesses to black and pink emojis. I love seeing her face when she sees the pajamas for the first time.

BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY. This can be as big or as small as you’d like it—it’s totally up to you. Inviting friends over to celebrate together takes the responsibility off of just one family and provides a fun environment for kids to gather, get reacquainted and have fun together before heading back to school. Having a theme with interesting and educational takeaways makes for an enjoyable party.

BREAKFAST FOR A CHAMPION. Go all out and create a beautiful tablescape for breakfast. Take out your best china and make their favorite meal and add a centerpiece, sequin table cover and all.

DELIGHTFUL FOOD A SWEET STOP IN MICHIGAN

A SWEET STOP BY MAD E LI N E YOST AND S TACE Y A . S HA NNON

I recently met up with Bridget Lambdin from 45th Parallel’s Candy World located in Suttons Bay, Mich. The Ball State University alumna has a love for creating sweet treats and for northern Michigan, especially along the M-22 highway. While the scenery in Suttons Bay offers numerous water views, it’s the candy that steals the show. Lambdin brought me a box of goodies from 45th Parallel’s Candy World, and I knew then we were going to get along famously. Everything in this box was delicious. Whether I was snacking on the bunny ear or bridge mix, I savored every bite and was glad the treats lasted me for a while. I personally had a soft spot for the milk turtles and sea salt toffee. The milk turtles were so creamy with the perfect amount of crunch from the nuts. I could have eaten at least 20 more. I have always enjoyed sweets, but my true love will always be for something a little salty, which is why the sea salt toffee was perfect. The tremendous amount of toffee, chocolate and sea salt 36  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

in Michigan made for the perfect after-dinner snack.

Michigan is known for many things, and one of them is fudge. The 45th Parallel’s Candy World’s fudge didn’t disappoint. Chocolate mint swirl, dark chocolate caramel sea salt and, my personal favorite, Reese’s Cup are just a few of its delicious offerings. The flavors of fudge were stacked instead of swirled which means bigger bites if you want both flavors at once. Along with their delectable handcrafted chocolates and varieties of award-winning fudge, 45th Parallel’s Candy World also offers hand-dipped chocolate covered cherries, salt water taffy, caramel and fudge dipped apples, fresh-baked cookies, handmade pecan turtles, holiday tins and much more. If you find yourself driving along M22 and need a quick candy fix, I would highly recommend a detour into Suttons Bay. With options for the whole family, everyone will find something for their sweet tooth.

5 tips for a successful grilling season

38  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

DELIGHTFUL FOOD GRILL IT UP!

FLIPPING FOOD TO CREATE GRILL MARKS IS FINE, BUT DON’T OVERDO IT.

1.

When prepping for a day of grilling, start with a clean grill. The best time to clean your grill is just after your finished for the day. Cleaning while the grill is hot helps remove remaining food residue from the grates. Grab some elbow grease and a metal brush to help with the sticky spots.

2. Flip, but don’t squeeze.

When cooking on a grill, flipping seems like the thing to do. Sometimes. Flipping food to create grill marks is fine, but don’t overdo it. When grilling meats, don’t flatten them or press the juice out. Those juicy steaks have flavor that will become more developed with the flame. Let those juices run out to help spark the flame, and you’ll have a tender steak because of it.

3. Tools of the trade are important for grilling. Keep a spray bottle close to help deal with fire flares. You can even use a seasoned water/ vinegar solution to help keep the food moist and keep fires at bay. A meat thermometer will be your next best friend when cooking on an open flame. This isn’t the time to eyeball or guestimate. Grillingcompanion.com suggests using a digital thermometer to get the most accurate reading of your meat.

4. Let it rest.

Grilled foods will see an increase in temperature even after they’ve been removed from the grill. Allow meats to rest and sit for a minimum of five minutes to allow the internal juices to redistribute. Wait before cutting too. You’ll want those juicy steaks to retain all their goodness.

5. Produce can be fun to grill, too. The sky is the limit to your grilled meals; fan favorites include stone fruit, pineapple, asparagus and potatoes. Extra Credit: Don’t have access to an outdoor grill? A grill pan can be just as good. Just oil, heat and get to indoor grilling! SUMMER 2017 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  39

You’re Misusing Your Activity Tracking App Weight-loss is about the number of calories going in versus the number of calories going out. But the truth is most activity trackers add back calories for the ones you burn during your workouts, increasing your daily calorie goal and causing you to eat more. You’re Making Cardio Your Go-To Sure cardio exercise is better than no exercise at all, but the truth is when it comes to burning calories – and even more importantly burning fat – strength training is key. You’re Overeating Healthy Foods It’s easy to overlook calories when they’re hidden under the idea that “It’s good for me.” But the truth is extra healthy calories are still extra calories. You’re Not Making Sleep a Priority When we think of sleep we usually think of energy levels. And while a lack of sleep will definitely affect your energy, the truth is it also has an impact on hormone levels that affect appetite (ghrelin and leptin) and stress (cortisol). All of which can contribute to overeating and suppressed metabolism. You’re Letting Your Weekends Undo Your Weekdays Enjoying the weekend is one thing. But the truth is eating (or drinking) more calories in two days than in the previous five days combined can bring your progress to a halt causing bloating, scale-weight gain and lethargy that leads to the seemingly never-ending cycle of the Monday restart. Losing weight isn’t always just about working out and eating cleaner. The type of workouts you do, how you track your activity, the amount of food you consistently eat and the quality of sleep you get can all have a huge impact on your overall results. So be sure to look beyond calories in versus calories out.

Fitness Tip

Did you know: 80 percent of the fat you lose is actually released through your lungs via carbon dioxide and the remaining 20 percent is released through the water in bodily fluids like sweat, tears and urine? So get your lungs pumping today.

COOL LIKE THAT!

COOL

LIKE

THAT! BY COU R T N E Y KOPE C

Quick Tips to Stay Healthy, Keep Cool and Look Hot This Summer From melting make-up to pasty pits, when it comes to feeling smoking hot in the heat of summer, a minimalist approach is key. Here are four ways to get your glow on without burning up. Kick Up the Cotton: Nothing says cool like an airy cotton tunic or sundress. Cotton, an all-natural fiber, forms airy loops when knitted together, making it the perfect summer thread to wear. Don’t forget that cotton can shrink, so save energy by skipping the dryer and drying those beautiful garments in the fresh sunshine. Wet Your Whistle: There is no better way to stay cool and look hot while doing it than drinking water. The recommended amount is eight glasses a day, but if plain H2O seems a bore, kick it

up a notch. Add in fresh summer fruits and veggies. Dice up fresh strawberries, toss in tart blueberries or crisp, sliced cucumber and lemon. Keep a prepared pitcher of it in the fridge for easy drinking. Pamper Your Pores: Those precious pores can take a serious pounding during the summer. Keep your skin free from debris by nurturing it with natural, UV blocking products. Beauty Counter’s best-selling Protect All Over Sunscreen is lightweight, waterresistant and made with nano-zinc oxide that blends seamlessly into skin. Why is zinc so important? Unlike chemical sunscreen, where the UV rays are actually absorbed by the skin and then neutralized once under, natural sunscreens contain minerals like zinc that act as an actual shield against harmful rays. What really makes Beauty Counter’s

42  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

sunscreen stand out is the green tea and blood orange extracts that aid in battling free radicals. Catch Up On Your Collagen: Collagen is the most plentiful protein in our bodies. From muscles to bones to skin, it works as a serious aid in providing elasticity and strength. These long-chain amino acids deliver hydration to the skin while stifling UV-induced skin damage. Collagen also helps with digestion by holding water in the intestines to keep things running smoothly and thus, no extra bloat! Best of all, collagen works to provide faster recovery time from all that extra summer activity by building bone strength, improving flexibility and soothing achy muscles and joints. Try Further Food’s collagen, which comes in powder form and is flavorless. It can easily be added to your favorite smoothie or protein shake.

summer fun! HOME SUMMER FUN

FINDING ART OUT AND ABOUT

BY MAUR I TA SU T TON B R O WN

Summer is the best season for outdoor fun. It’s also a great season to change décor in our homes and offices as we visit different places. One of my favorite summer activities is shopping at art festivals and fairs. Art walks (given by local communities), open studios and home and garden shows are fun places as well. These excursions are amazing, and oftentimes you can meet the artist at the event. As an interior designer, I love visiting outdoor events to purchase art and décor pieces for my home and my clients’ homes. It is a relaxing experience and a nice one to share with family and friends. But, you want to remember a few things before you lace up your walking shoes and hit up your chosen destination. A few weekends ago I was at a home and garden show where I met a beautiful local artist named Sandy Rose. Her Sandy Rose Art Co. display was amazingly colorful and exciting. This outdoor event was a mixed venture, and her art stood out from the entire show. She and I spoke about her start in art and her reason for doing the abstract style in full color. She said that it was something she has a desire to do. One day she painted her dog and was pressured by her hubby and friends to sell her art. She did, and the rest is history. She is inspired by her international upbringing in different countries around the world. Great finds from here will enhance my home as well as my client’s décor projects. Sandy’s artwork is featured on this page. 44  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

tips & recommendations 3 When visiting these events, take your time to view all

the art presented. Search with an open mind, and take your time.

3While viewing the art, read the write-ups next to it and, if you are interested, inquire about the artist.

3 If possible, research the artists who will be at the art show to get an idea of

where to start and even what you want to purchase before you get there. Being knowledgeable about the artists’ accomplishments and what their art means to them may help in your decision to purchase their art.

3 When viewing possible pieces you like, stop, meet the artist and ask

questions. Artists love that! Remember they are there to sell their art, so they are happy to answer questions. You will also get the artists’ point-of-views about their art and why they created it.

3 Pay attention to the details of the art piece you want to purchase. 3 Sharing what you think about the art you like is always a good gesture. Also let the artist know you may be looking to add their art to your space because it goes great with your décor.

3 When in the company of the artist and others, if you really like the art they are presenting, tell them! It is great to show interest in their work.

some do nots: 3 Avoid sharing what you have from other artists, unless what you are

purchasing will complement what you have been collecting back at your home or office.

3 Never talk about an artist to another artist; they are unique and want to sell their art.

3 If the art is overpriced, do not tell the artist; just keep moving

TRAVEL KOHLER, WISCONSIN: A FOODIE’S PARADISE

Many people go to Kohler to golf at two world-class courses. Plenty more go to enjoy relaxing treatments at the equally world-class spa. But, I go there to eat. Kohler’s a little Wisconsin town built by the famous bathroom fixtures company of the same name. In the late 1970s, Kohler company chairman, president and CEO Herbert V. Kohler Jr. lobbied the board to transform housing for immigrant workers built in 1918 into a village inn. The American Club opened in 1981, then a few years later evolved into the luxury, AAA Five Diamond rated resort it is today. The American Club now also includes the Kohler Waters Spa, Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits golf courses, as well as the Inn on Woodlake and Sandhill, a luxury rental cabin. This summer, Kohler will open the Kohler Lodge, a resort hotel and spa in Green Bay, just a football’s toss away from Lambeau Field. The company also owns a golf course and resort in Scotland, and it has branched out into gourmet chocolates and, most recently, into craft spirits. Like everything I’ve ever tasted at Kohler, the chocolates at the Craverie chocolatier café are divine. I’ve dined my way through the very impressive Kohler Food & Wine festival practically every October, and every February I try (unsuccessfully) to eat my way through 46  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM SUMMER 2017

their chocolate extravaganza. But despite my many trips to Kohler, enjoying culinarythemed treatments at the spa and heading further out to eat my way through nearby Sheboygan, I had never dined at Kohler’s signature restaurant, The Immigrant Room. After making dinner reservations, my husband and I opted to stay at the Inn at Woodlake, which worked well for including both our 7-year-old son and dog. My husband and I started our evening at The Winery Bar. Kyle sampled an IPA he’d never tried before, and I enjoyed a refreshing rum drink called A Better Tomorrow. Then, we were seated in the German Room of The Immigrant Room. Kyle enjoyed a salad made with tiny, homemade mozzarella balls, fresh greens and equally fresh, tart tomatoes and then supped on a gorgeous salmon. My first course was a deconstructed deviled egg topped with brioche croutons and caviar paired with a bright, minerally and decidedly not buttery Chardonnay. It was swoon-worthy. But it wasn’t as memorable as the second course, which was perhaps the best lobster bisque I’d ever enjoyed. It was paired with a buttery Chardonnay. The sommelier told me the bisque is made fresh daily from lobsters that are flown in fresh daily. No wonder it was so scrumptious!

TRAVEL KOHLER, WISCONSIN: A FOODIE’S PARADISE I still dream about that soup. But, if anything could outdo it, it was the homemade ricottafilled pasta, served with fresh vegetables and a tomato beurre blanc then topped with shaved black truffles. It was paired with a lovely Italian red. I still dream about that course, too. My entrée was an A-5 Waygu beef Wellington, deconstructed with puff pastry, demi-glace, mushrooms and spinach gratin. It was paired with a deep Cabernet Sauvignon. For dessert, Kyle loved the buttermilk cake, while I spooned up the crème brulee. Both tasted great with the Sauternes dessert wine. I can honestly say, I understand why The Immigrant Room is Kohler’s signature restaurant. Superlative descriptions really don’t do it justice and, after having enjoyed luxurious meals at all of the other resort restaurants, every one of which was fantastic, they all were out-done. The next day, Kyle and our son Quinn putted on the green and visited the Shops at Woodlake while I relaxed at the spa. Since Kohler is known for its bathroom fixtures, definitely sign up for a water treatment. Mine was called lavender rain, a combination massage, body scrub and water treatment all wrapped up in one. I walked out of there blissful and calm then enjoyed a dip in the spa pool, whirlpool and cold pool before meeting up with my family to swim at the Sports Core. Before heading out of town, we dined at the one other restaurant I had never visited, River Wildlife. Normally a private club for hiking, birding and hunting, this lodge is open to guests of The American Club and the Inn, and we sat at a window table with a bird feeder. Kyle and I enjoyed gourmet sandwiches— ham and double brie with apricot jam for me and shaved beef for him. Quinn was happy with chicken tenders. And we all enjoyed the French silk pie, homemade ice cream and mascarpone bread pudding. After a stroll with our dog in the woods along the Sheboygan River, we were revitalized and ready to return home.
