editor ’ s note

Summer! The sun, sandals and flipflops, sundresses, brunches and mocktails! It feels so good. Despite recent hardships, this summer I have seen dreams bloom. Looking back at 17 years of Hope, I swell with pride and gratitude. I am proud of myself for how far I have come and I am proud of this community we have built and everyone in it. I am grateful for all the opportunities, adversities, big (and small) wins, people I have met, and the list can go on and on… My heart feels full. This Summer Issue sees the fruition of an idea I rolled out back in 2014 – The Summer of the 25. To have watched this vision finally unfold with such support for and from each of the incredible 25 ladies we are featuring in this issue, I truly couldn’t have hoped for any better. To also have been able to connect with Tracey D. Powell and have her as a guest speaker at our Hope 25 Luncheon was a dream come true, as her work at Disney has been such an inspiration for me. Each of the ladies featured have an incredible and inspiring story to tell, overcoming obstacles to live out their purpose – it is my hope they empower and embolden you to chase your own purpose. I also want to thank my team at Hope from the bottom of my heart - all our sponsors, my family, and you – our readers –without whom none of this would be possible. NEVER give up on your passions and dreams. They are in your heart for a reason. Go on and shine your light, have courage and be kind, and see just how far you have come. Now, go grab your favorite summer drink (or make one from this issue’s Spritz recipes), get cool and comfy, and enjoy this Summer Special Edition of Hope. Love ya, girl!

I switched to low or no-cost self-care during the uncertainty of the pandemic, and the changes I made have proved sustainable for my lifestyle and pocketbook. How did I make changes? I simply made a list of everything I do or would like to do for self-care and I replaced the expensive items with creative alternatives that were lighter on the pocketbook but still deeply satisfying. If you are used to getting massages or having spa days as your routine self-care, I suggest trying to enjoy that relaxing experience at home. You can start by doing a session of tension-releasing stretches easily found online combined with a soak in the tub. You can follow that by deep conditioning your hair, giving yourself a facial and putting on body and foot lotion. If you still have the energy, you can give yourself a manicure and pedicure. The home spa experience is a great way to spend an evening and give you that pampered feeling. For me, stretching is vital because it makes my body feel open and relaxed and is the closest feeling to a massage. There are some expenses upfront – hair products, lotions, nail polish - but they will last for several uses, so spread out over a month or two and it’s more than worth it. When money went further, maybe self-care looked like long Sunday brunches with a group of friends where you weren’t concerned about splitting the bill with a large group. Now that going out is much more expensive, splitting bills equally seems slightly out of reach and not budget-friendly. I have replaced brunches with what used to be a party only for special occasions: tea with friends.

Inflation has most of us trimming luxury items off our budgets and trying to save on everything from groceries to tank tops to keep us cool during the summer months. One thing that we should consider revisiting but not cutting out is how we take care of Self-careourselves.isimportant

Rebecca Chamaa is is a freelance writer, workshop instructor, and graduate student at Columbia University. She calls sunny Southern California her home.

To arrange a tea with friends, ask everyone to bring their favorite tea and finger sandwiches, scones or cookies. If you look online, there are great recipes for hosting a high tea and great ideas to make it as special as if you went to a tea house. The cost is far less, though, as each person only has to pay for their choice of tea and contribute one food item.

Many of the things I do for self-care daily are free or almost free – walking, reading, journaling, taking a nap, having a movie marathon (this one costs some money, because what is a movie night without popcorn and red vines or pizza or nachos?) You will most likely have to spend some money on your selfcare to ensure you aren’t giving up the habits that keep you healthy and able to face each day. However, there is almost always a creative alternative to your old favorites that reduces the amount you spend while still getting all the benefits. Z

now more than ever, especially considering the added stress of high prices and supply chain interruptions, not to mention all the global uncertainty with war, climate disasters, and a virus many are still recovering from. Just writing that sentence was exhausting, which proves we need self-care more than ever… So, how can we lessen the expense of self-care but still practice it enough to keep our mental health in good shape?

In the past year, with the help and support of her Kuk Sool instructor, PSBN Ken Ring, the love of her life and husband Andy and her amazing daughters Annabeth and Katie, Pam has trained 80 women and young girls in basic self-defense. And they have only just begun.

A Muncie resident for over 30 years, Pam began teaching women’s self-defense workshops with one of her daughters a year ago, and she was forever changed. The more she learned about the insidious and pervasive nature of violence against women and young girls, the more driven she was to prepare them for verbal, emotional and physical threats. Pam has trained women as young as 12 and as old as 72, and each one has taught her about the character, drive and strength women are born with. She wants women to know their worth and how to defend it.

You are precious beyond measure, and you are worth defending.”

hopeforwomenmag.com SUMMER 2022

Initially, Pam was inspired by a simple request to teach a women’s self-defense workshop. The process of researching and planning this workshop opened her eyes to a fairly hidden but common reality among women as well as opened up a Pandora’s box of buried personal experiences that had chipped away at her self-esteem for decades.

PAM is a second degree blackbelt in Kuk Sool Won and a licensed Self-Defense Instructor through the Specialty Fitness Institue, even after a late start in martial arts only nine years ago.

Confronting the common, heinous reality of violence toward women completely changed Pam. She continues to be inspired by seeing women and young girls stepping toward healing, learning to stand up for themselves and growing into the truth that they are precious and worth defending. B.O.W came from Sarah’s desire to show women they are never alone and sometimes all it takes to get through a rough time is real talk with another lady willing to listen. Helping women feel safe, loved, seen and heard is what she lives for. She believes everyone is worthy of being empowered to be completely themselves. With 17 years of photography experience, she loves using her skills to allow women to see who they truly are and to be confident in the energy they are bringing to the table. As she finishes up writing the book that inspired B.O.W., Sarah continues to provide one-on-one and group sessions for her community as well as host events that feature ALL women vendors and artists. She believes that as one woman rises, we all rise, creating a strong divine sisterhood. She is honored to continue to watch it grow as we all allow ourselves to get weirdly vulnerable. Since 2015, Sarah has also been running a local art non-profit. Re-Generation Indy has about 20 established professional artists who teach a variety of workshops to the youth, hosting Youth Art Shows to give them opportunities to talk about their creations and sell their work. The organization was created from her love of Indy’s art community and admiration for the unbelievable talent right here. Sarah hopes to have their own location one day soon that will act as not only a local art supply store, but also a gallery, workshop space, artist studio and so much more.

SARAH got to know many different kinds of people growing up on the eastside of Indianapolis. It was the biggest blessing and is where her love for mother nature and the nature of people started.

Anita watched her father create his D.A.D.S. Organization where he taught students carpentry, brick laying, plumbing and electrical skills. It was important for him to give those students who weren’t college bound another outlook on life and a chance to learn a trade and even launch their own businesses. Her grandmother clothed and fed thousands of the homeless.

As a little girl, Anita was taught to give back and have agape love for all God’s people. She started as a candy striper, served in nursing homes and alongside her grandmother and sorority sisters with Sigma Gamma Rho. As a Global Philanthropist, Anita has been able to touch, reach and change the lives of over one million individuals and families and she is still working. It means so much to her to be able to give back to her community and those abroad. Recently coming back from Zimbabwe and installing two new water wells in remote areas where people walk 20 miles for water, Anita saw there is always more work needing to be done. This is what continues to inspire her to keep going. For the Word says, “For what you have done for the least of my people you have done for Me.” Anita is thankful every day the Lord has chosen her to be His vessel to be a blessing in the lives of people.

For solo enjoyment or the entertainment of your entourage

BY ANN WALCZAK With each season comes its own appropriate drinks. And it can probably go without argument that in the summer, it’s rosé and spritzes. The spritz originated in Italy. The combination of Amaro (Italian bitter liqueur), prosecco and sparkling water are both a love letter to the grape varietals of the region and a clever way to dilute the alcohol content down to roughly that of a beer. A smart move because that summer sun is HOT and slugging down a high-octane cocktail is the fastest way to dehydration (aka a ruined afternoon). Two of the most traditional spritzes are a spagliato and an Aperol spritz. “Mistake” in Italian, a “spagliato” is a combination of Campari, sweet vermouth and prosecco. The lure is that a bartender, intending to make a Negroni (equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth), mistakenly added prosecco instead of gin. The result was delicious and now incredibly popular. An Aperol spritz combines Aperol with prosecco and club soda for a refreshing, incredibly drinkable beverage. Nowadays, the spritz doesn’t always follow the traditional ingredient list. You’ll find almost any drink topped with sparkling anything can be dubbed a “spritz” on a cocktail menu. These recipes for your solo summer enjoyment or entertainment of your entourage take a few liberties, but mostly follow the traditional definition. So, whether you want to go with a classic recipe or something more creative, here are a few easy, yet delicious libations sure to please. EASY Would you like your cocktail to be as lazy as your summer afternoon? Try these two-ingredient winners.

prosecco vs. cava vs. brut

Prosecco, cava and brut are all popular choices for a spritz. What should you use? That depends on what other flavors you’re trying to balance.

Tuileries Garden 4 raspberries ¾ ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur 1 ounce Bonal Gentiane Quina 3 plum slices 4 ounces rosé prosecco Place raspberries in the bottom of a balloon wine glass (mush them a bit if you like). Add St-Germain and Bonal. Add ice, top with prosecco and stir. Slide plum slices down the side of the glass into the drink.

A brut (France) is the driest option, providing a smooth, crisp, slightly bready lift. Cava (Spain) is the next driest, with notes of citrus and a subtle nuttiness. Prosecco (Italy) is the most traditional choice, its gentle sweetness the perfect complement to bitter liqueur.

Tuscan Sun 1 ½ ounces Cynar ½ ounce passionfruit juice ½ ounce lemon juice 4 ounces cava Add all but cava to a balloon wine glass. Add ice. Top with cava and stir. Garnish with lemon peels.

A rosé version of any of the above varieties is also a fun thing to play with, and it may increase the sweetness, fruitiness or floral elements of the drink depending on what brand you go with.

The classics. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Spagliato 1 ounce Campari 1 ounce sweet vermouth 1 ounce prosecco Aperol Spritz 2 ounces Aperol 3 ounces prosecco 1 ounce club soda Add non-sparkling ingredients to a balloon wine glass. Add ice. This aperitif is a gorgeous infusion of quinine, gentian and renowned herbs of the Grande Chartreuse mountains. It tastes of plums and cherries with a hint of licorice.

Campari One of the most popular and recognizable bitter liqueurs, Campari tastes of cherry, clove, cinnamon, grapefruit zest, bay leaf and a hint of orange. Fort Wayne

Are you and your spouse looking to explore but don’t have much time to get away? Hubby and I were feeling the same way. The kids and work were becoming routines, and we started to feel like roommates going through the motions of our day-to-day together.

Fort Wayne, Indiana quickly came up in the conversation as a place to explore, and once we did some digging, we quickly made plans. Hubby and I are very different when it comes to fun, but Fort Wayne truly has something for everyone, making our itinerary easy to create. And so we set off. We both love sports, making our downtown hotel choice a nobrainer. We stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites Fort Wayne Downtown, which gave us the perfect view of TinCaps field, an abundance of restaurants to choose from and a rooftop bar on our floor where we could have a nightcap or two. Another big

47hopeforwomenmag.com

SUMMER 2022 travel plus was on our first night’s stay - the Tincaps game ended with fireworks that we watched in bed from our 7th-floor room. When we arrived, we dropped our bags and hit the walking scene; locals suggested The Landing, for the yummy food choices, live music and drinks. The street was bustling with laughs and fun, the vibe and smells from the food being served put us in the right mood for the night. We immediately got drinks from a small pop-up bar and walked while we decided between tacos, pizza, pasta or bar food for dinner. We ended our night at Tolon, a local farm-fresh restaurant that treated us to truffle fries and an out-of-this-world burger. It truly was the best burger I’ve ever had; you must try it! The next day was packed! As it turned out, we picked the best week to explore Fort Wayne, as their annual Three Rivers Festival was going on. This festival includes vendors, music, art and SO MUCH FOOD. Besides the festival, there were many other events and local activities, including the YLNI Farmers Market, packed with people and an incredible amount of unique items. Everything from jam, fresh fruit and vegetables to the alluring aroma of freshly popped popcorn and fresh bites to eat. There was a row of food trucks and almost two streets lined with vendors selling homemade goods like purses, clothing and crafted trinkets. We purchased a set of creative initial clips for our daughters’ bookbags for the upcoming school year. (I know it’s a baecation, but the kids are always one thought away.) After the market, we headed on to another adventure. We decided to grab some scooters from Veo, conveniently set at different stations around downtown, and headed to the Botanical Conservatory, arriving in just a quick, exhilarating minute. The conservatory was a full-on experience; when you walk through each curated garden, it’s transformative to see so much life in one place. After working up our appetite, we walked to Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island. As transplants from Detroit, MI, Coney is a lifelong staple in my life, and it did not Withdisappoint.fullbellies, we made our way over to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, which took us through sculptures, paintings and curated exhibits. Out front, artists were using chalk to depict some pretty amazing scenes on the street. Between the chalk art and the vast amount of murals and art pieces around the city, we were in awe of all the art in Downtown Fort Wayne. Next, we walked back to the hotel to prepare for our dinner at Birdie’s that evening at the beautiful Hotel Bradley. After a quick nap, we dressed early and walked through the bustling Promenade Park before dinner, right off the river and lined with food trucks. Our table at Birdie’s had the perfect view of both the city and the restaurant. We ordered some specialty cocktails, an order of steak frites and some pretty tasty chicken wings.

Delight in the fun and laughter of new discoveries with a getaway to Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Sunday morning, we hit the continental breakfast at the hotel and then eased into the day. We hopped on bikes we reserved from Fort Wayne Outfitters for the afternoon and rolled through the trail to The Allen County Public Library, on a mission to look at our family trees in the Genealogy section. The library has vast resources, including an ancestry database to look up family Next, members.we headed to the Tincaps baseball field to grab lunch and catch the ball game. We love sports, so it was great to be in the ballpark. We saved one of the best adventures for last. After leaving the game, we took one last chance to spend some quality time together and went on the tastiest tour one can ever go on: The DeBrand’s Chocolate tour. We learned so much, but the hand-crafted chocolates were the highlight for us. We grabbed more gifts for the girls and the grandparents who watched the girls for the weekend and headed home. If you’re looking for a city that can create a spark for you and your partner, Fort Wayne did that and more for us. Z
