LIVE. DREAM. INSPIRE.

HELLO, Gorgeous

CELEBRATE MORE THAN JUST THE HOLIDAYS THIS SEASON We women make a big difference in the world around us; it’s time to celebrate that! Putting together this issue made me realize how much we have to celebrate. We’re coming into a season

of holiday celebration, but we have so much more than holidays to celebrate. We each also go through different seasons of life and those need to be celebrated as well. You aren’t exactly the same woman you were 10 years ago. Life has left a mark on you. But, you’re leaving your mark as well, and that’s more than worth celebrating. Head over to page 36 for some tips on how to host a celebration for you and your friends to highlight your accomplishments and the woman you are in this season of life. Vetta Cash has some great suggestions to help you and your circle of women feel recognized, valued and celebrated. If you need a reminder of how awesome women are in everyday life, be sure to check out page 26 for eight inspiring women who are shaping their communities. I was blown away by the way they have worked and fought for their dreams all while helping those around them. They are certainly worth celebrating. And you can’t miss our cover women. In true Hope fashion, Sandi Krakowski is inspiring and educating other women with her own story of success. On page 32, you can read about how she went from a single mom making $5,000 a year to being the head of a $20 million media empire. She’s got some words of wisdom that apply to all women, no matter what season of life you’re in. Let’s not forget the practical and small things to celebrate as well – like having an organized bra and panty drawer. Seriously. Home organizing is a pain, but once it’s finished it feels so good. Denise Cooper gives us her best suggestions for keeping your bra and panty drawer in order on page 16. No matter what season of life you’re celebrating right now, I wish you the best holiday season filled with lots of love! In Hope, Angelia White Hope for Women CEO

Pave the Way to Your Happy Place BY LUCY B RU M M E T T

Ever get stuck in the same old grind – that daily routine, day in and day out? It’s easy to do. I’ve done that. When you’re a young woman, you tend to be a little more daring. You take extra care in the way that you dress, you do fun stuff and you explore new things. But that’s not reserved only for the young. Being daring and having fun never have an expiration date, and we must remember that. I speak from experience; I get it! Life comes along and you get busy with a career and maybe a family. That’s called living, my dear, and that is OK, too. You’ve just got to make sure that you aren’t so distracted with living that you forget to have fun along the way. FEATURE PAVE THE WAY TO YOUR HAPPY PLACE ( CO NT IN U E D FR O M PAGE 7)

Discovering your fun side When I was in my late teens I got into modeling. I did some mall clothing gigs where I had to freeze and pretend to be a mannequin. Another time, I was a hair show model and always followed the Nexxus team. Even though I didn’t get paid, I walked away with an array of hair products for my participation. So why did I do these things? I did them because they made me happy, and I got to experience life.

Ask around for referrals and make an appointment with a photographer; get your hair and makeup done professionally, too. Pick out an outfit that makes you feel beautiful. This will be your day, and you’re allowed to give yourself permission to go all out for it. It doesn’t have to be expensive if you do your research. Not only are you doing something exciting, you are also investing in yourself.

Have you ever wanted to try something new? A new fashion trend or a new sport? These are all things you can still do now. I picked up archery last year, and I was the most non-athletic person ever! It was love at first sight and forced me into exercising more often so I’d have the strength to shoot my bow. I had wanted to try archery for one full year before I finally started looking for an instructor, because I was busy in my daily routine. I would go to work and continue to do my part as a mother and wife, all the while putting off new things I wanted to do.

Your fun side doesn’t always have to be solo either. Think about your family and friends who would benefit by having fun with you. You want to make it an interactive experience and open your eyes to the possibilities in front of you. Do you foresee taking a trip in your future? If a destination on your bucket list seems too big, think about a mini trip instead. Whether you travel solo or with someone else, it will be worth it. Think of all of the things you would like to try on your trip. Once that is done you will be able to narrow it down based on your budget.

There’s something to be said about re-discovering that fully confident version of you that emerges when you do unleash your happiness. Instead of living for the weekend, you live with a purpose-filled passion. What does that mean to you? Do you like to be creative and daring when you’re having fun? Maybe it is something small or huge that you want to do. If you could pick one fun thing to do now, what would it be?

Exploring new things outside of the norm brings excitement to your life. You get to live life in a whole new way. We are all given a full calendar year to work with. What we do with those 365 days is up to us.

Take, for example, getting your picture taken. I’m talking all about you, not a family photo. Not your traditional poses either but a professional shoot where you feel like a star and are at a location of your choice. I can tell you, that’s a very invigorating experience. It takes you out of your element. You get an opportunity to tap into the side of you that you thought had been forgotten or maybe never knew existed. If you are the primary picture taker then you owe it to yourself to indulge in this. 8  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

Do I still have things I would like to do for fun? You bet I do! Take my sweet addiction of archery for instance. After I shot my compound bow for the first time, I knew right then and there I wanted to compete. I invested in an upgrade in my equipment and listened to my instructor. When I go to my lessons I focus on my form and a gazillion other things, but I also enjoy having a good time while I’m doing it. It’s a great feeling to make time to have fun in life. Anything that leaves you smiling or busting your gut laughing is a win. So pull out your calendar, and make an appointment to squeeze in a little dose of fun. What kind of happy place is waiting for you?

Now is the time to get outside of your comfort zone, try new things and make life fun again!

FEATURE LIFE IS A JOURNEY, ARE YOU WEARING THE RIGHT SHOES? B Y K ATH L E E N ELLIS (excerpt from The PINK Tea Experience Event)

LIFE’S A JOURNEY, ARE YOU WEARING

the right shoes?

10  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

At some point in my mid-30s I began to realize life is actually a journey. I realized life isn’t just about this week, this month or even this year, but rather life is a continuous event and all the weeks, months and years intertwine, connecting the dayto-day routine matters with the milestone markers and the shining star moments. I also realized a couple of things in relation to this journey. First, it is up to me—and only me—as to whether I enjoy or endure this life journey. I realized I am the one in charge of my thoughts, words, choices and actions. Therefore, I get to choose and keep on choosing; I must make a daily choice to enjoy this life journey. Second, I realized in order to enjoy a successful journey, I need to be flexible and prepared with the right mindset, support systems and tools to maneuver the multiple twists and turns this life journey unfolds along the way. I need to be certain that for each unique step of my journey I am metaphorically and physically wearing the right shoes at the right time. Most every woman I’ve met in my life journey loves shoes. Most of us have multiple pairs and styles in our closets. Knowing which pair to wear at any given time is important. Take an inventory today to see if you have the most important shoes available to ensure you are equipped to enjoy and not just endure this life journey.

FEATURE LIFE IS A JOURNEY, ARE YOU WEARING THE RIGHT SHOES?

Stilettos

These are the special shoes you wear for those shining star moments. The pretty, eye-catching shoes you wear to prom, a wedding, date night or an awards ceremony. They are lovely, but they’re not comfortable for very long. Most of us wouldn’t want to wear them every day, all day. Your life journey will have beautiful shining star moments and you should celebrate and enjoy them, but those moments come and go amidst many more ordinary days, and that is OK.

Running Shoes

These are the comfy shoes you wear for your day-to-day activities like family, home, work, grocery store, gym – the more routine parts of the journey. These shoes help you stay on track and keep up the pace. They allow you to change course quickly as well as help you stay energized and focused for the day-to-day flow.

Foul Weather Boots

You put on these weather repellent shoes when you have to confront the storms of life like sick kids, the end of relationships, job changes, the death of a loved one or a flooded basement. These boots are warm and dry on the inside to protect you while you do what it takes to make it through the storm. They’re water repellant on the outside so the storm doesn’t stick to you and you can move forward.

Combat Boots

These heavy duty shoes are for the serious business of spiritual warfare. These boots may not be cute, but they are designed to give you the victory in a battle. They have rugged soles to give you traction and protection while you stand your ground against the enemy. These shoes are the most important pair in your closet; keep them close at hand.

Another shoe to consider is one I call Shoes of Grace. These are the shoes you put on to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, to understand what they are going through and where they are coming from in their life journey. These may be the hardest shoes of all to wear, but so very many would appreciate you taking the time to slip into them. No matter which pair of shoes you’re wearing at the moment, there are a few more things to remember as well. • New shoes need to be broken in before they feel comfortable. • Shoes need proper care for beauty and longevity. • Changing your shoes will work different muscles causing pain and discomfort in the process. • When you start to get blisters, it’s time to change your shoes. As you make your way through your life journey, be sure to equip yourself with the necessary tools, surround yourself with the right people, establish good habits, take care of yourself, look up (not around), give yourself and others some grace, step out of your comfort zone, never lose sight of your dreams and, by all means, make sure you’re wearing the right shoes!

Different types of shoes serve different purposes in our lives – literally and figuratively. Make sure you’re in the right pair for your journey!

FIND STRENGTH

EVEN IN THE MOST DIFFICULT TIMES There are things in life that knock us to the ground. Sometimes it feels as though life is falling down all around us. You were not made for a life defined by the chaos of crises. You were made to persevere through trouble and come out the other side—stronger.

Slippers

These soft and cozy shoes are what you wear for times of rest and recovery. Whether by choice (choosing to keep yourself rested, recharged and refreshed) or by force (sickness or loss), make sure your slippers are readily available and understand you must be careful not to wear them too long.

Laura Geller Easy Cover Up Hydrating Concealer Crayon One of the best parts of my work at QVC is discovering all the latest and greatest in beauty, fashion and beyond. Laura Geller products are a staple at the Q so I knew I had to try some of her products for myself. The result? My latest obsession! The Easy Cover Up Crayon gives you amazing coverage without the bulk. It blends perfectly and rids me of those night shift dark circles. http://www.laurageller.com/ easy-cover-up-hydrating-concealer-crayon.html DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo Traveling all over for appearances means I don’t have as much time as I would like to shampoo and blowout my hair. I’ve tried a few different dry shampoos, but I was never fully satisfied with the results. Then I discovered DryBar’s Detox Dry Shampoo. Not only does it prolong my style, it smells AH-MAZING! This is my go-to trick when I want to keep up my professional TV studio blowouts. Just a quick spray and I have body, texture and freshness. http://shop.thedrybar.com/ products/detox-dry-shampoo?variant=261748922 St. Ives® Nourished & Smooth Oatmeal Scrub + Mask Let’s face it, between the sun, sand and elements of summer your skin needs a reprieve. I have always been a fan of St. Ives because the formulas are smooth, soothing and don’t dry out my skin. I’m also a big fan of any product that can do double-duty, so when I came across the St. Ives Nourished & Smooth Oatmeal Scrub + Mask I had a feeling it would be a winner. Boy, was I right! You can use it as a mask to nourish dry skin or as a scrub to smooth away skin dullness. Trust me, your skin will thank you. Temptu Air My favorite part of having my makeup done at TV studios is when the makeup artists use airbrush. It’s like a mini miracle! So when I discovered there was a product that would let me do this at home and on the go, I knew I had to have it. Temptu air is an at-home airbrush makeup machine that allows us non-makeup artists to achieve a flawless finish. https:// temptu.com/temptu-air Original Skin Essence Lotion with Dual Ferment Complex by Origins One of the first things my mother taught me about beauty was how important moisturizing and a good skincare regimen were to prolonged beauty benefits. I’m always on the hunt for new moisturizers to test out and heard amazing things about Origins. Their Original Skin Essence Lotion is just the refresher I was looking for. It’s lightweight, boosts your skin tone and really increases skin clarity. Check, check, check! http://www.origins.com/product/15349/40274/ skincare/treat/treatment-lotions/Original-Skin/EssenceLotion-With-Dual-Ferment-Complex

5 TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR PANTY DRAWER OUT OF A BUNCH

5 TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR PANTY DRAWER

out of a bunch

Whether you have a little drawer space or a lot, we have some great tips for getting your lingerie organized 16  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

B Y DE N I S E CO O P E R

Being organized makes life easier, especially on busy mornings. You need to be able to access what you need quickly and move on. Unfortunately, one drawer that is easy to let slide in the organization department is the one that is home to your bras and panties. But a little bit of work can go a long way to beautifully organize your unmentionables so you start your day off right. Here are five tips and tricks to creating a beautifully organized drawer.

FASHION

5 TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR PANTY DRAWER OUT OF A BUNCH

purge

panty or sock 0rganizers

Once a year go through you drawers. Get rid of any bras that are frayed, have an underwire missing or are stained. Especially toss the ones that don’t fit and are just too uncomfortable to wear. Keep the ones you love, and just let the rest go!

Organizing your panties by style makes a world of difference, depending on which outfits you’re wearing. Briefs, boy shorts, hipsters and thongs can be sorted and stored in compartments so that you can easily grab what you need when getting dressed.

stack & mold Use the stack and mold method to help bras keep their shape. Avoid folding the cups into one another. This will dent the mold of your bras and is the fastest way to ruin your bras. Instead, lay them out flat with both cups sticking up and simply stack bras on top of one another.

drawer divider Spring-loaded drawer organizers are one of my favorite organizing tools to use in any drawer. They’re are perfect for keeping your undergarments neat and tidy. You can place them front to back or side to side and they expand. They accommodate almost any drawer.

bra organizers Having this ultimate drawer organizer makes it easy to find which one you want to wear without digging through your drawer. Bra organizers are designed for saving space and making it easy to store your bras. They also help keep your bras in shape. If you’re low on drawer space, though, you can certainly hang your bras. Hanging your bras is just as good as the stack and mold method. Lingerie hangers are ideal to help maintain the shape of your bras. They also save drawer space and are accessible.

Velvet VIP

Fall is a great time to play with your suede pieces and this year especially we see bold uses of this soft leather in everyday wear. Dresses with suede details are super-chic and can go from day to night with a switcheroo of shoes and accessories. A short suede skirt with a chunky sweater is a cute and cozy way to style a chilly fall day.

Stand out in a crowd with extravagant jewel toned velvets. Deep rubies, emerald greens, wine-dark magentas, sapphires and golden hues are reigning supreme in this luxurious textured trend. The modernized version of this look is expressed with lighter fabrications and willowy details to ensure it doesn’t feel too heavy. Wear a velveteen blazer with distressed jeans or an accordion pleated skirt with a crisp white shirt for a chic juxtaposition.

Embolden your ensemble with a carefree carryall. The hottest handbags are making a powerful punch and when it comes to this everyday accessory, the brighter the better! This is a great space to play in if you are a bit more timid with your wardrobe. It’s a foolproof trend that can elevate your style instantly. You can spice up your most basic threads with a colorful handbag all day long.

The skinny leg jean is a modern mainstay, always great with boots, sweaters and scarves for a nice layered look. However, the form of the good old-fashioned denim jean is being shown in so many variations; the possibilities are endless. From cropped gaucho to long flared legs, anything goes! It’s a great time to wear whatever jeans you like. And the more, the merrier! Don’t be afraid to mix your favorite denim jacket with your jeans. Layering denim is a must.

Pop Up Pleats Pleats are popping up on many garments this fall. A little nip-tuck of fabric is a great detail that creates a streamlined silhouette, especially in an accordion pleat, which is very trendy right now. An interesting variation we are seeing used to create artistic lines in fabrications is the pin tuck pleat. Pin tuck pleats add lovely texture to any piece and really make it interesting!

CAREER

PROFILE: IESHA BERRY

“It’s being what people need at the time that they need it. It’s reminding them they’re not alone and someone is here that can walk alongside them.”

Iesha Berry has taken quite a journey in her life, going

from the daughter of a teen mom in inner-city Chicago to corporate America executive who is now the senior director of global diversity and inclusion for Microsoft Corporation. Her passion for life – including her work, family and faith – has driven her to move forward and give back. Berry’s faith journey began as a child growing up with her teen mom and grandmother. She remembers vividly the day she decided to fully commit her heart to Jesus. Berry said she was a sophomore in high school and sitting beside her grandmother in the church pew. She had been thinking about joining the church for a while. Then, during the altar call, her grandmother looked at her with a nod that it was OK to go. Both Berry and her mom went forward and dedicated their lives to Jesus. That moment set in motion Berry’s love for God and for moving forward. In fact, a few years later when she was going to college and later moving away for a job, she felt the same kind of nod from God telling her it was OK to move forward and to go, leaving the rough area she grew up in behind. While she is thankful to be out of inner-city Chicago, she’s never forgotten where she came from and continues to do all she can to give back. “My passion is actually connected to my purpose,” Berry said. “I’m particularly passionate about youth. We have the responsibility to lift others as we rise.” Berry has been a mentor to numerous young women, especially women of color like her. She refers to her mentoring style as “mentoring with arms wrapped around it.” Along with talking with the young women about life decisions and goals, she also tries to give them new experiences like staying in a hotel, ordering room service and pampering themselves with a manicure or pedicure. “It about being able to reach them not only in voice, but in purpose – in hand and feet,” she said. “It’s allowing the story of my previous experiences to really propel me to share my story to help others climb.” And her story includes challenges that have shaped her into the strong, successful woman she is today. Berry was the first person in her family to graduate from college and go on to work in the corporate world. Because of that she had to figure out things on her own, like what she truly stood for at work, which took a few years.

Her experiences weren’t always rosy. Berry said in her first job out of graduate school, an older and experienced woman of color advised her that she needed to change her hairstyle and model herself after another employee: a white woman. “In essence, what I heard was I am not good enough,” Berry said. “Unfortunately, at that particular time in my career I hadn’t determined what I stood for. And, as a result of that conversation, I went to the hairdresser and got my hair cut, wore my hair down. Today, I don’t do that. While that experience initially felt negative and prickly and uncomfortable for me, it definitely shaped me into who I am today. It’s an experience I can share with other young women of color to say, ‘Yes, that experience happened, but it didn’t break me.’ I am now confident in my competence, regardless of what shell that it comes in.” Along with helping young women figure out what they stand for in the workforce, Berry also helps them set and reach their goals. She uses Habakkuk as an example to write down a vision and make it plain. Berry loves to help women achieve their visions and to encourage them. She said sometimes women just need a physical presence beside them and other times they need advice. “It’s being what people need at the time that they need it,” she said. “It’s reminding them they’re not alone and someone is here that can walk alongside them.” In her own life, Berry has a close group of friends and family who help her on her journey. She said having friends who can sit and really go over the tough realities has helped her continue to take on new challenges. “Life is about continual growth,” Berry said. “We don’t want to be stagnant.” Through it all, though, Berry is far from immune to the stress of trying to balance work, family and giving back. She recently moved her family from the East Coast to the West Coast when she accepted the job at Microsoft Corporation. That’s brought changes and challenges. Sometimes she just presses pause and loses herself in an episode of the old sitcom “Good Times” or takes an hour for a massage. But then she gets right back up, seeks any counsel she needs from her husband and friends, and gets back to work managing her family and her team at work. “There is no formula around for achieving balance,” Berry said. “You have to define what balance is for you.” FALL 2016 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  25

Seeing successful people make a difference is inspiring, but seeing successful people who are similar to you is even more significant. This is the

effect successful women have on other women with dreams and goals. It’s the idea that if she can do it, then so can I. Representation is important. Unfortunately, most successful women don’t get the recognition they deserve, so Hope decided shine light on a few of such inspirational women.

Carolyn E. Mosby PRESIDENT/CEO OF MID-STATES MINORITY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL “Diversity and inclusion in the workplace provide opportunities for better innovation as well as attracting new and diverse talent. It also helps to foster ideas and perspectives from a diverse group of people. Your workforce needs to be reflective of the community and your customers. A more diverse workplace and supply chain helps to stimulate and grow communities and contribute to the economic base of cities which ultimately create a better, more diverse and inclusive world.”

Toni Neely

DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP RELATIONS AT THE INDIANAPOLIS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

“Diversity helps us expand our awareness and understanding of how differences can, and often times do, create barriers in the workplace. Inclusion is a call to action. Inclusion requires intentional behaviors that help others feel like they belong. These behaviors must be exemplified from the senior leaders down. If employees don’t intentionally include, they will unintentionally exclude. When people feel excluded, they are not as productive, they are not as collaborative and ultimately they will leave. Enter turnover rates that cost organizations .5 percent to 1.5 percent of the salary of that position. Then multiply that by five or 10 or 50+ positions each year and you have a serious and costly business issue on your hands.” FALL 2016 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  27

Hand off the relay baton when necessary, take a rest and jump back into the race and run. My family and my legacy before me inspire me to persevere during stressful moments in my career. My parents made sacrifices for me to reach success, so that motivates me to persevere in the challenging moments of my life. I also know I need to be the example for my daughters, nieces and other young girls, and managing stress is critical to survival.”

My mission is to make it easier for those who want to share their solutions to get the visibility, support and connections they need to share their ideas. But you must believe you can do it! What people don’t realize is your job is not who you are. Your job is how you support your family while you pursue your dreams. As a woman, mother and wife, I have many challenges to navigate daily. My first child was born with profound special needs. In seven of the 13 years I’ve been married to my husband Jimmy, he’s survived four heart attacks and just recently a stroke. These challenges have made me really appreciate life and how delicate it truly is.”

VICE PRESIDENT AND TREASURY MANAGEMENT OFFICER AT PNC FINANCIAL SERVICES “We spend too much time and energy comparing our weaknesses to someone else’s strengths; that’s a setup for failure. If we focus on our strengths and the things we do well, we can build a bridge over our weaknesses that puts us on a trajectory to win. I also exhort people to spend more time with God. I enjoy my time in prayer or reading the Bible. As you are chasing your dream, be sure you know what you’re chasing. Is it a job or a career? Is it something that will catapult you to your destiny? I find we often spend time in a job or career that doesn’t get us to that end result or where we think we want to go. Be intentional. Be maniacal. My church family is strong and helps me to stay thankful and grounded. I’ve learned to appreciate more deeply my physical, mental and spiritual awareness through centered prayer. I have been and continue to be inspired by my mother, Dr. Linda Johnson. I watched her earn her Ph.D. in psychology when I was 4 years old. She was the first black woman at her academic institution to earn that degree. She went on to be a dean of students and again, she was the first black woman to reach that accomplishment. When I was in high school she became the commissioner of human rights for the state of Minnesota. Later, when she learned I was pregnant with my fourth child, she retired and moved to Indiana to help my husband and me continue to pursue our careers while raising a family. When my fourth child turned 2, mom came out of retirement to teach at a developmental preschool in Indianapolis (her other degrees are in early childhood education and special education). Today, at nearly 72, she teaches second graders and mentors both younger and student teachers. She shows no signs of slowing down and even now is a perfect example of worklife balance. She inspires me to do what I love and love what I do both personally and professionally. Regardless of how many years I’ve been at it, my future is bright.”

In law school, we were definitely a minority, and at times I did not always feel like I belonged. I sought mentors, worked hard and stayed focused. I met some great people and mentors to help me, but it was definitely different and a struggle for me. I have been disrespected and belittled by colleagues, which made me hurt and angry. Instead, I work to be the best I can be and be so good that I am needed and I am an asset, so they have to select me. I don’t complain about it a lot, but I keep pushing and working harder. When I got disrespected by colleagues, I remained as professional as possible and kept doing my job. I stand my ground and follow my heart and beliefs. I will never let someone break me, I bounce back and get better. The best way to overcome anything is by being successful, keeping my head up and chasing my dreams.” FALL 2016 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  29

CAREER

GET YOUR CAREER IN GEAR

Three tips to get you from where you are to where you want to be

Get Your Career IN GEAR B Y N I C KQ UO L E T TE BARRE T T

Whether you have children heading back to school this fall or not, fall is the perfect time to re-set and re-focus on career goals. Maybe you’re re-entering

the workforce after time away raising babies. Maybe you’ve been in the workforce for 20 years. Or maybe you are thinking of starting that new business you’ve always dreamed of. Wherever you find yourself right now, I’ve got three tried-and-true tips for how to make your career dreams a reality and keep you moving forward. SHIFT YOUR THINKING. Start by developing a career-driven mindset as opposed to a job mindset. Completely eliminate the word “job” from your vocabulary and, even more so, eliminate it from your mentality. When you see yourself in a job, you passively allow someone else to tell you what your next move (job) will be. However, when you change to

the mindset of creating and having a career, you think of yourself as a manager of your own success, and you deject someone else determining your career path. You will also begin to take full responsibility and control of your career path and direct it towards your definition of success.

CREATE A CAREER SUCCESS PLAYBOOK. Now that you’ve shifted your mindset, it’s time to get to work. Write out your goals using the SMART method to set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Develop a strategic plan on how to get from point A to point B, and put a date on each action so it becomes a commitment to get it done. Get an accountability partner – preferably someone who is also working towards their own career goals. Pairing up with like-minded people will help to keep your mojo up.

BE AND STAY POSITIVE. If this road was easy, everyone would take it. So take it easy and don’t beat yourself up. Making a major shift in your mindset and the resulting actions that go along with it will take some time. The key is to keep moving forward and focusing on the end goal. When you put your end date on your goal(s), just add a week or two cushion to allow for life challenges. We all have them. The difference between success and failure is how you respond. So stay positive. You’ve got this! Overall, having a career-driven mindset elevates your desire to want more out of a 9 to 5. If you have to be there anyway, why not make the most out of it? You are smart. You have the skill and the ability. And I believe in you. All is left is for you to believe in yourself and make a move to get your career in gear. FALL 2016 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  31

KRAKOWSKI B Y CHERY L A. P U L L I N S

From a struggling single mom to now multi-million dollar media mogul, Sandi Krakowski is teaching others how to build their businesses with faith and make the God-given dreams a reality. And it all starts with knowledge – not finances. 32  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

SANDI KRAKOWSKI

Empowering women to make their dreams come true You may have seen Sandi Krakowski in her videos on Facebook, read her advice in USA Today or spotted her book, “#BeMore,” at the bookstore. She’s

become a leading expert in business, especially in building businesses through faith. She openly shares her story about how she went from a single mom making $5,000 a year 20 years ago to now owning and operating a $20-million media empire. Krakowski recently sat down with Hope and shared how her journey has evolved and what she wants women to know about living out the dreams God has given them. HOPE FOR WOMEN: When you first started in business, did you have people who invested in your vision? What personal financial sacrifices did you have to make? SANDI KRAKOWSKI: I never had anyone invest money into the companies I had. The number one excuse people give me is they don’t have any money to start a business. Well, neither did I! I sold things around the house that I had previously purchased, including things that I loved and didn’t want to let go of. I downsized my life to a ridiculous place. As an investor into other businesses today, I literally won’t invest into a company that isn’t taking every step forward they can to pay for things on their own first. Money is not what people lack in building their business profitably; they lack information! HFW: What practices do you have that help you press beyond fear during moments when things may look uncertain? SK: I’m a big believer in seeing and believing in what you want to achieve. When my stress gets high and doubts come rushing in, I’ll take a deep

breath, visualize what I want to happen and make it my own in my mind. Many times in the morning when I know I have a very busy day, I’ll lie on my couch and visualize my day. When I get to the end of my day in my visualization, I take a deep breath and see myself feeling fantastic. Our brain is fully within our control, and we need to direct it with the kind of things that we want. HFW: What was the primary contributing factor you attribute to being able to get where you are in your business? SK: Never giving up and believing God is cheering me on. I truly believe God wants me to succeed more than I have ever wanted to on my own. I’ve been hit by many difficult life blows, but I made decisions a long time ago not to let any of them take me out. HFW: What other key things have been the greatest contributors to your success? SK: Believing God loves business and He has all the answers I could ever need in a storehouse room of heaven that I can draw from. I see the Bible as a book of time tested wisdom written by a heavenly Father who imparted to men and women everything they would need pertaining to life. This belief sets me apart, equips me and even makes it possible to do what I’ve done. HFW: How was your $20 million media empire conceived? SK: God gave me a word and said: “Sandi, if you will teach people what you’ve been doing all these years in your business, you will not lack one good thing!” So I set out to teach people the basics of how to set up their website and sold $100,000 in products in the first two months and went to $1 million in sales in the first seven

months. And here we are now! HFW: When did you know your business was going to serve the world with such high levels of influence and impact? SK: I knew from the beginning because it’s a calling God’s put on my life: everything that I start grows enormously. I don’t mean to sound proud in saying that, but God didn’t call me to create businesses that only affect a few people. I’m called to transform cultures and every time I put my hand to the plow of the things He’s called me to do, it grows real big and wide real fast. Social media is a brand new platform. When God showed me what social media could do to bring our message into the world, I knew reaching hundreds of millions of people was no longer a fantasy but totally doable. HFW: What does family mean to you? SK: It’s everything. It’s home, a safe place where I get to be myself and be with the people who know me at the truest state of myself. It’s a reflection of God’s dream for me and His love for me. My three sons have taught me more than anything I’ve ever learned in business and have made me more proud than anything I’ve ever accomplished in my career. As a newly divorced woman, I also see how important being married to somebody who is like-minded and like-spirited is. No family is perfect, but all family members must grow forward and grow together to survive. HFW: How do you balance family life and business? SK: I think balancing family life and business is a deceptive concept because it gives the impression that when you take from one, the other loses out. For FALL 2016 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  33

COVER

SANDI KRAKOWSKI

me, family and business have always been one whole unit; I’ve always loved working with family. And the minute my business disrupts my family or my family unit starts corrupting my business, something has to change. When people disengage their family or business, they are shutting off part of their spirit.

The Bible talks about older women teaching younger women, and I definitely would say to younger women and moms who are building businesses: your children couldn’t care less who cleans the toilet and if you’re gone 10 to 15 hours a week they probably will never even remember it. But they will remember the attitude on your face and the energy you had.

The real problem comes when we think we can cross off all of our boxes and say that because I gave my time to my family over here, I can now go work without any guilt or because I put this many hours in at the office, I deserve to go spend time with my family. We have a crisis at home that makes people run to their work to get away. If we healed our families, I truly think our careers would be more enjoyable, and we would all be connecting on a deeper level.

I know this will be hard for a lot of people to read, but it’s truth: I would’ve filed a divorce a whole lot sooner. I knew many years ago we were not made to be together after years of counseling, praying, fasting, intercession and more. I finally filed for a divorce. Honestly, I believe could’ve made a bigger impact on the world – maybe reached hundreds of millions of dollars in sales – if I had the courage I have now back then. The great thing is, God is a redeemer of lost years. Young women, love your husbands, love your family, love yourself and live courageously. When you need help, get it.

Our brain is fully within our control and we need to direct it with the kind of things that we want.

HFW: How did you begin incorporating teaching Faith at Work, especially to entrepreneurs? SK: I’ve never built a business without God. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure I even know how. Faith has always been a part of everything I do at work. I felt a moral obligation to tell people what really helped me be successful. You can either tell them the truth and show them how to do it as well, or take all the credit yourself and miss out on the blessing from God.

HFW: With a social media following of over 1 million people, you have a highly engaged audience. How have you and your team been able to build such stunning levels of engagement? SK: By studying our clients more than anything else we do. Studying what they are already looking at, knowing what they love and delivering that to them. This is a lot of what I teach in my classes, because people focus so much on their product or service that they forget success is completely built on loving your customers and knowing them more than you know your product. HFW: If you had to hit the reset button and wipe it all clean, which things would you do again and what key lessons would you use to start over? SK: I would have hired a nanny and worked at an office part-time to give myself a break. I think it would’ve been amazing to have a woman with me all the time while I’m raising my kids, helping with my business and pretty much being a nanny/assistant all in one. My children would’ve probably had a mom who was more focused and healthy if I had given myself more breaks. 34 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

FIVE TIPS TO START LOVING YOURSELF MORE SO THAT YOU CAN LOVE OTHERS EVEN BETTER. B Y DR. N I CO L E L AB E AC H

ARE YOU LOVING LIKE YOU MATTER? Are you loving like you matter? Stop and think about that a moment.

center stage, our value is illuminated, and options that seek to disregard it become too costly to afford.

Love is a definitive call on each of our lives—one to another. Recipients should feel valued, regarded, validated, accepted, celebrated, appreciated and nurtured through our love. Simply, love will never ask us to ignore someone’s value. Therein lies the tricky part, love requires that we simultaneously love ourselves (the giver) and others (the recipient).

3. BE THE FIRST. Love has a unique way of creating love. When you dare to be the first to choose you, love you, accept you and believe in you, you give others permission to do and reciprocate the same. When you go first, you model a healthy love that owns a selfawareness and will harness the respect of those who love you.

Whether you feel like you’re doing a great job or you could use a tune-up in this area, the following tips are sure to boost or maintain your success.

4. CREATE AND USE HEALTHY BOUNDARIES. What are your parameters for saying yes or no? What are your personal limits? Part of loving like we matter requires seeing our worth independent of what we can do for others, how people see us and what people expect of or from us. Healthy boundaries not only teach others how to treat us but they highlight our values based on our actions. These boundaries serve to give clear guidelines on how to promote loving others without disrespecting ourselves.

1. PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION: Simply put, be more kind to yourself! Being super critical and unduly hard on yourself can only hurt you and rub off on those you care about. If you’re your worst critic, cease and desist. Being harsh toward yourself is a telltale sign you’re not living like you matter, which will naturally affect your ability to love like you matter. 2. SHOW GRACE IN GRATITUDE. What are you grateful for? Can you identify your blessings? Can you see your daily grace? When you grasp daily messages that speak to love received in the small, big and unexpected packages, it’s hard to ignore how absolutely significant you are. When we allow gratitude to take

5. STAND IN FULL PERSUASION OF GOD’S LOVE FOR YOU. Every time we accept how much we matter to God, it becomes more challenging to act like we don’t matter even to ourselves. In and of itself, owning the truth of God’s love is one of the best ways to keep ourselves honest when it comes to loving ourselves and others in a way that’s ultimately pleasing to Him. HONORING

CELEBRATE ALL YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THIS YEAR BY HOSTING AN AWARDS CEREMONY FOR THEM. BY VET TA C ASH

t is L t s e u G e h T

In today’s fast-paced world most women don’t have time to slow down to reflect on the wonderful things happening in their lives. The pattern of life is usually something like: work, work, work, achieve goal, and then on to the next goal with little or no break in between. The result is an entire demographic of women who don’t realize the power of their impact on the world and the people around them. An awards ceremony is an intentional way to highlight the amazing contribution your tribe is making to the world. Each of you will feel loved and appreciated in an environment that encourages you to own your success. This event leaves no room for downplaying. No one can hide in the shadows, and everyone can hear about her greatness. You may be thinking your friends are so amazing that they don’t need a public pat on the back. Well, think again. Everyone needs to be affirmed. Affirmation is especially sweet when it comes from your peers. Your awards reception will be a breath of fresh air after all the work, sleepless nights, unspoken struggles, prayers and fasting that got you all to this point. The event will strengthen your sisterhood, boost confidence and likely be one of the best gifts of the holiday season. An occasion like this and the honored guests deserve stellar attention to detail which requires you to plan early and thoroughly. Here are a few tips to help your planning. 36  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

Limit the guest list to your nearest and dearest friends, and that’s it. The event is about sisterhood, transparency and affirmation. An audience of “outsiders” will hinder the synergy of the gathering.

The Venue

The best venue is the comfort of your home but if that’s not an option consider a hotel suite or private dining room at a restaurant. The goal is to be in a place where you can let your hair down, have lots of fun and have heart-to-heart conversations.

s n o i t a t i v n I e h T

Select gorgeous, fussy invitations that properly reflect the tone of the evening. Be sure to note the purpose and attire for the gathering.

The Gifts

The gifts (awards) you select for your friends should be personal and reflect how proud you are of their accomplishments.

You and your friends deserve a night of honor and recognition, and you’re the right person to host it. Make this holiday season extra special by hosting an event to honor the accomplishments of your circle.

TOWELS AND ALL THE FLUFF BEHIND THEM

3 LIFESTYLE CHANGES

TO STAY FIT ALWAYS Let go of fad diets and start living healthier for good. BY SEL E NA M OOR E H E AD

So many diets have been started to get in shape or lose weight for a big event. Even a medical condition might inspire some to try healthier eating for a while. But before you know it, you start sliding back into old habits and the pounds start packing back on. This cycle isn’t a healthy one. Instead, why not commit to being physically fit always? This commitment is the first step in your journey to a true lifestyle change. Living a healthier lifestyle plays a huge role in your commitment to being physically fit. Excuses abound when it comes to fitness, but most often I hear women say they don’t have time to exercise. Physical exercise, if at all possible, should be a part of your everyday life in order to be physically fit. You have to take time for wellness. Ideally you should reserve 50 percent of your day for adequate sleep, exercise, stress management and nutrition. Then you’ll be better able to deal with the other 50 percent of your day. Furthermore, managing these activities can prevent a 44  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

whopping 80 percent of cardiovascular issues.

cardiorespiratory fitness and is an important part of training for everyone.

Whether your goal is to get fit enough to run a marathon or get fit enough to manage the stairs at work without getting winded, you have to start somewhere.

3. FIND SUPPORT. Solicit support, encouragement and prayers from your doctor, family and friends to help you get through your journey. Share your goals with them so they can help you and keep you accountable.

1. SET GOALS. Set your goals wisely and reach the mindset of not letting anything or anyone get in your way and move forward. Write down three simple things you can get started on today to help your overall health, such as increasing your water intake to at least half your body weight in ounces, increasing fruits and vegetables to fill half of your plate and getting more rest (about seven to nine hours daily). 2. DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. Rather than focus on the pre-conceived notion of how much physical activity is needed to lose weight or get fit, just start and keep on moving. Aerobic exercise such as running/jogging, elliptical training, treadmill training, swimming and cycling improves

However, if you’re not accustomed to working out, you can take baby steps by walking and make changes along the way. Walking is a great way to get started with no more than 45 minutes daily or 25 minutes once you incorporate strength training. According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of all physical activity and is one of the most basic changes you can make to effectively improve your heart health. Although there are numerous ways to get fit, combining a healthier diet with more activity and consistency is the best way to get physically fit for the long term.

WELLNESS 10 HEALTHY LIVING TIPS FOR THE BUSY MOMS AND CAREER WOMEN

10

BY C L AU D I A D E M A R CO

Making healthier choices can seem overwhelming and like adding one more thing to your already long to-do list. But, taking some small, manageable and easy steps can help get you on the right track to more healthy living.

1

2

THINK HEALTHY.

The way we think is the greatest contributor to our health journey. Starting your day with prayer, worship and positive self-affirmation and purpose can promote the great success of feeling and looking your best.

4

INVOLVE YOUR KIDS.

Allow your kids to explore healthy foods. Let them in the kitchen with you to get excited about healthy living.

EAT HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL.

7

Taking the stress out of eating a so-called perfect diet and simply focusing on eating more fresh and vibrant foods that make you feel good frees you up emotionally and mentally so you can tackle the other demands you face daily.

Healthy Living

FOR BUSY WOMEN

3

DROP THE GUILT TRIP. As busy mothers and career women we can easily weigh ourselves down with guilt of not eating a perfect diet or not making all the food at home ourselves. Make healthy eat-out options if need be, or buy freshly prepared food to help simplify home life as you transition into a healthier lifestyle.

5

MOVE MORE, IN A FUN WAY.

Don’t stress about finding a perfect workout. Instead focus more on doing what you can where you are, even if that means a couple minutes of fitness by your sleeping baby before you go to bed.

6

GET REST!

Getting a solid six to seven hours of sleep a night can help stabilize weight and increase mental performance.

8

DITCH THE PROCESSED FOODS AND DRINKS.

Simply removing foods that aren’t fresh and don’t have clear, readable ingredients from your diet can greatly boost your natural energy and mental clarity. For drinks, water and fresh juices are always the best option.

9

EAT FRESH.

Fresh, ripe, whole produce and unprocessed foods are going to give you the most bang for your buck in relation to nutrients and energy.

10

PREPARE.

Take a few days out of the week to get some key items prepared and ready to go as needed. Beans, lentils, quinoa or brown rice are great staples to have ready in the fridge to toss in with different meals throughout the week.

SET REALISTIC GOALS.

Look at your life obligations and responsibilities and determine what you can and cannot do. Work around your obligations and try different things like taking a brisk walk after you eat on your lunch break or doing more things outdoors. FALL 2016 HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM  45

Aiken Foodie Scene

Leaves Others in their Tracks BY AVA R OXA N N E ST R IT T

For years people have traveled to Aiken, S.C., due to their love of horses, but lately the Aiken’s foodie scene is leaving the equestrians in their tracks. Once upon a time, during the 1940s and 1950s, all the elite trained their horses in Aiken, including music crooner Bing Crosby, makeup empress Elizabeth Arden, auto-exec Walter P. Chrysler and film producer Louis B. Meyer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Today the level of dining and hospitality in the city of Aiken in is at an elite level, but this time it is here for you! 48  HOPEFORWOMENMAG.COM FALL 2016

During my time in and around Aiken, I was delighted to find some of the best dining in the world, which left me tickled pink that all I had to do was get in the car and drive there—over and over again. What left me almost speechless was the quality of the ingredients in every meal and product, including the delivery, whether it was room service at The Wilcox or the perfect candy wrapper. Take a look at just a few of the gems of the Aiken foodie scene.

Antebellum Chocolate

antebellumchocolates.com

James Stefanakos, owner and founder of Antebellum Chocolate, grew up knowing what good chocolate was thanks to his mother who was a director of a gourmet cooking school. Last year he grew frustrated that he couldn’t find any quality chocolate, so decided to make his own. He began selling his chocolates at the Aiken County Farmers Market with the mission of “Buy a Bar Feed a Child.” Part of the proceeds from each bar went toward Golden Harvest Food Bank’s BackPack program. To date his contributions have provided 4,000 meals. The artwork on his bars is all from his children. He now offers classes and parties at his shop where you can make your own bars.

The Willcox Hotel, Restaurant and Spa thewillcox.com

With New Zealander Chef Regan Browell voted as a Best Chef of America and the restaurant being an Award of Excellence Winner from Wine Spectator, the restaurant located within the historic Willcox Hotel is known as “Aiken’s living room.” Its unpretentious, innovative and addictively delicious menu satisfies any palate with dishes prepared using farm-fresh or organically grown foods from regional suppliers. One of the best things about The Willcox is its pet friendly atmosphere.

It is the most pet friendly place I have ever encountered in all of my travels around the world. One can relax in their lobby lounge and dine on Chef Browell’s famous dishes with your distinguished furry member of the family still by your side. This is my favorite place in Aiken and possibly the entire state of South Carolina. Be sure to catch one of their summer deals, take in the spa and also make time to lounge by their lovely pool. Locals love to take in a night of jazz while enjoying the atmosphere. Cocktails are a cut above here; be sure to partake.

The Stables Restaurant rosehillestate.com/ thestablesrestaurant

Enjoy dinner in a stable that has been repurposed into a restaurant on the grounds of Rose Hill Estate, which is the only intact Winter Colony estate left in Aiken. It dates back to 1898 and encompasses a full city block. It was also the birthplace of the South Carolina Garden Club in 1930. Enjoy an inventive meal and beer that you won’t find anywhere else thanks to the German owners who pride themselves in offering such a diverse collection. Locals flock here for both the food, the hospitality and the ability to bring their four-legged pals.

New Moon Café

newmoondowntown.com

This funky coffee house serves up creative comfort food using fresh,

local ingredients. Everything served is authentic food. They roast their own coffee in small batches, bake their breads and pastries in house and make their soups from scratch every day. Who’s hungry for ricotta blackberry jam toast, applewood bacon chocolate chip cookies, quinoa parfaits or a breakfast quesadilla?

LaDolce Gourmet Bakery, Café and Tea Room ladolce-aiken.com

Two for tea? Afternoon tea is something that I always look forward to whenever I get a chance. The number one foodie item on my list the next time I visit Aiken is afternoon tea at LaDolce. Lady Kelly MacVean of La Dolce is an internationally certified tea master and tea hostess. She has studied various facets of tea in England for three years, where she also collected vintage china and flatware from Queen Victoria’s era that she now uses at La Dolce to serve afternoon and high tea. Lady Kelly has visited and researched more than 100 tea rooms throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. Using the Chinese tea ceremony, Gongfu Cha, and Chinese tasting and aroma cups, she hosts tea tasting events where she offers guidance for evaluating loose-leaf teas for quality and taste, pairing tea with foods and using tea as an ingredient in cooking.
