Our organic world Product range

2

Our organic world Scandinavia has spearheaded the movement towards organic farming and organic food in many areas, and eggs have been – and are still – a prominent part of this evolution. At DAVA Foods we warmly welcome this transition towards organic farming; in fact, we aim to ensure that 50 % of our entire production is organic by 2020. Organic production precludes the use of preservatives in many products. At DAVA Foods we have risen to this challenge by introducing innovative technologies, strict control procedures and superior hygiene to ensure that our organic ranges have long shelf lives. Explore our organic range in this brochure and feel free to contact us with any questions or suggestions you may have. We are always interested in expanding the scope of our organic world. Organic egg production ANIMAL WELFARE 路 REGULAR SCREENING VISITS 路 ACTION PLANS

Animal welfare is a crucial aspect of organic farming, and we take this very seriously at DAVA Foods. To ensure animal welfare, we conduct on-site screening visits at our suppliers. In cooperation with business stakeholders we have developed a screening tool that enables us to form a true and realistic picture of the welfare of organic hens. With the help of such screening, supplemented by specific action plans in case of any problems, egg producers can take definite steps to promote the welfare of their flocks. We are confident that screening visits make a difference for organic egg production, and that active, ongoing dialogue with the producers helps safeguard animal welfare and high-quality eggs. The new tools will also help to reduce the risk of future animal welfare problems.

Safe organic eggs Shell egg safety is a key concern for us. Finland, Sweden, and Denmark all apply a zero-tolerance policy on salmonella, and in Denmark you will find the world’s strictest control measures in relation to salmonella. This puts us firmly in the forefront of egg-related health and safety: tests demonstrate that our eggs – including our organic shell eggs – are free from salmonella, and we are confident in our claim that our eggs are the safest in the world. Our business is founded on high food safety and quality – which is not only essential for our customers, but also for breeders, egg producers, and the animals themselves. One of the cornerstones of our business base is the “Farm to Table” quality system, which sets high standards for quality, food safety, production and animal welfare. The system is based on HACCP principles that set rules for food safety from harvest to consumption of the product. So you can be certain that your organic eggs and egg products have been well cared for all the way. Vivi Nielsen, Quality Manager

EcoTray: recyclable and reusable A PLASTIC EGG TRAY FOR THE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS CONSUMER

The EcoTray is made of polypropylene (PP05) which is recyclable and approved for contact with food. When developing these PP trays, DAVA Foods created a concept for a potential return system: the customers return the empty trays to the store, just like PET bottles, and the store then returns them to be reused as egg packaging. In order to implement this system, a suitable workflow must be developed in cooperation with the stores. Environmental benefits EcoTray goes in the dishwasher, allowing it to be reused in many different ways; washed and reused at home, recycled, or returned and reused as an egg tray. EcoTray weighs less than standard egg trays and takes up half the space when opened and stacked. The compact, lightweight design also makes transport simpler and more fuel-efficient.

SNACK EGGS

Healthy snack eggs SMALL EGGS FOR SMART KIDS

Snack eggs are an ideal match for current consumer trends while also offering a healthy supplement to children’s diets. Today’s parents are very aware of their children’s nutritional requirements, and organic food has become a staple of many lunch boxes. DAVA Foods’ organic snack eggs perfectly complement this trend: eggs are a superfood, packed with protein, minerals and vitamins, and the small size of these eggs makes them appealingly bite-sized for the children. The attractive packaging catches the eye of children and adults alike and includes tips and recipes: the eggs are, of course, ideal as boiled treats that can be peeled for a simple on-the-move snack, but they also make excellent additions to salads, wraps, sandwiches, etc.

We ♥ eggs RECOMMENDED BY THE DANISH ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY

The Vi ÆLSKER Æg® (We Love Eggs) concept is aimed at food-conscious consumers who favour organic foods and want to know more about the products they buy. Our Vi ÆLSKER® eggs are produced by farmers who are strongly committed to organic farming and to understanding hen behaviour and well-being. In addition to meeting all the general guidelines for organic egg production, every Vi ÆLSKER® farmer must meet additional requirements to be part of the concept and to carry the label "Recommended by the Animal Welfare Society". Working in close cooperation with the farmers, we strive to ensure the best possible conditions for the hens. For example, we have specific requirements for the design of outdoor areas. During all seasons, the hens must have access to vegetation, crops – and plenty of shelter. The farmers must ensure that the hens feel safe and that there is always something for the hens to do: this helps prevent stress and ensures top-notch animal welfare.

Gaardbo eggs ORGANIC EGGS · MADE WITH CARE

Organic farming has become mainstream, boasting impressive growth rates. This has fostered new organic concepts that take a broader view of what organic farming entails. The Gaardbo brand is one example, and its name was chosen to show that the hens behind the Gaardbo eggs and meats are particularly well looked after. The Gaardbo (literally “Farm Dweller”) is a mythical figure; a little elf or gnome. Scandinavian farmers used to believe that this little creature cared for their animals and children, so it was important to take good care of your Gaardbo. Today, farmers who supply organic eggs and hens for the Gaardbo range must meet additional requirements relating to animal welfare. The Gaardbo soup hens are a new addition to the product range – an excellent way of ensuring that organically reared hens end up on dining tables once their laying days are over.

Brunch ĂŚg

Organic brunch eggs THE SOCIAL EGG CONCEPT

DAVA Foods conducts consumer research on a regular basis, and the results always reaffirm that a soft-boiled egg to start the day remains a firm favourite. Our brunch range, featuring extra large eggs, lends itself very well to making soft-boiled eggs for weekend brunches. The brunch concept has become ever-more popular in recent decades, offering a relaxed and attractive alternative to the more formal lunches. Eggs are, of course, an important component of brunches – in scrambled eggs, pancake batter etc. Yet few things beat the soft-boiled egg, as is also evident from our website traffic: one of our most popular subjects is “how to boil an egg”. Reflecting this, we have printed a chart of recommended cooking times inside the box. That way, your consumers are well on their way to enjoying perfect, organic soft-boiled eggs.

Organic egg products You will find a wide range of egg products made with organic eggs at DAVA Foods – all of them based on continuous product development and testing. We explore and optimize the functional properties of eggs, such as their whipping ability, emulsifying ability, baking ability, etc. And we use our findings to adjust our products – or create new ones. We may give you products with a longer shelf life, eliminate the need for preservatives, improve production for food manufacturers – or provide products that are more convenient for consumers. Everything we do is based on real needs that we see and hear about among our many different customers. So if you have an idea for an organic product you would like to see, talk to us. We might be able to make that happen, too. Tom Markussen Jensen, Chief Product Developer

High-quality organic products SUPERIOR EGG QUALITY · LONG SHELF LIFE · PLENTY OF CHOICE

Organic egg production has progressed far beyond the shell eggs that were the original focus of the organic consumer trend. These days, consumers and industries demand a much wider range of organic egg products, including bottled egg whites, yolks and whole eggs. At DAVA Foods, our unwavering focus on the quality of our raw material – shell eggs – helps ensure that all our processed organic egg products are of similarly superior stock, and we conduct regular tests to keep quality levels uniformly high. Our sophisticated processes also preserve the various properties of fresh eggs as well as can possibly be done. Shelf life is a particular concern with egg products, not least for the organic varieties where no preservatives can be added. Thanks to measures such as aseptic filling and extremely strict hygiene procedures, the DAVA Foods range of organic egg products offers a shelf life of up to 30 days.

Making the most of organic hen farming At DAVA Foods we have contributed greatly to increasing the percentage of organically farmed chickens and hens in our local markets. But what happens to those hens when their best laying days are over? In the past, they were often used for animal feed, biofuel or similar purposes – worthy causes in themselves. Now, our organic egg-laying hens are used as the basis for organic cuisine. Thanks to our collaboration with Scandinavian Organics – a rapidly-growing business venture that began with one man’s vision of preventing organic produce from going to waste simply because it failed to meet purely aesthetic demands – the meat of our hens is put to excellent use, ending up on consumers’ dinner tables in a satisfying finale to their lives. We already offer a range of organic convenience foods, including meatballs and delicious organic meals. Vibeke Breum Høj, Key Account Manager

Organic rapeseed oil PRESSED WITHOUT CHEMICALS · GMO-FREE

Rapeseed oil is a key ingredient for professional food manufacturers, for bakeries – and in private homes. Our organic oil is renowned for its purity: it is pressed without chemicals, entirely GMO-free, and bottled directly at the production site, which not only reduces its carbon footprint, but also eliminates the risk of contamination during transport. Rapeseed oil is a healthy choice, too. It contains plenty of omega-3 fatty acids in combination with omega-6 fatty acids – and practically no trans fats. It is also a source of natural vitamin E. Our organic rapeseed oil is available in bottles from 0.5 l up to a full truckload holding 25,000 kg.
