ion, culture, design, major events, innovation, study, meetings, business, whatever the reason for your trip, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised: Milan will be able to satisfy your needs, curiosities and interests. With a heritage of 26 centuries and a commitment to the future, ours is a contemporary, open and welcoming city, an international benchmark in many areas. You will find proof of this as you spend some days with us. Allow me to make some suggestions. When planning your stay in the city, include the classic attractions - Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Teatro alla Scala, Palazzo 12

MARTINA RIVA

Reale, Navigli and Darsena, Castello Sforzesco, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie. Don’t miss our museums, from Galleria d’Arte Moderna to Museo del ‘900, Museo di Scienze Naturali, Museo della Scienza e

della Tecnologia, Brera Picture Gallery and many others. Let yourself be fascinated by the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova and CityLife and go search for unprecedented glimpses of the city as you move away from the centre: each district, with its buildings, shops and meeting points, has its own story that deserves to be discovered and known. Then I suggest a stop in our parks and green areas, for some physical activity. Finally, make the most of the shopping opportunities in the fashion district and in the neighborhood markets; go to the theatre or to San Siro, join in one of the many musical or sporting events that Milan hosts with pride and enthusiasm. Milan’s vitality will win you over. Thank you for choosing us and come back to visit us soon...!

THE LAND OF TOURISM

TEXT Barbara Mazzali Lombardy Region Councilor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing, Fashion and Major Events

W

elcome to Lombardy: art, culture, traditions, nature, sports, business and religious travel, food and wine, and excellence in accommodation. This is a heritage given to us by nature, our history, and one which the Lombards have always known how to enhance. If you are in Milan - the world’s Fashion and Design capital and future stage for the 2026 Winter Olympics - of course you should ‘tour it’ and discover every fascinating corner, but remember that Lombardy is so much more than just Milan. Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Mantua, Lodi, Monza, Pavia, Varese and Sondrio are ‘little kingdoms’ of cultural uniqueness, landscape and food and wine specialties. In Lombardy you will discover cities of art and enchanting 14

villages, castles where time has stood still, mountains for skiing or walking, taking in the green and breathing deeply, and lakes that will offer you dreamy views and opportunities for sports. If you wish, you can board boats for ‘slow nature’ tours on our ri-

vers and lakes, where horizons, far from skyscrapers and city buildings, appear even larger. There are experiences to be had from dawn to dusk, and at the end of the day you can enjoy the ‘movida’, that essence in each of our territories that keeps our municipalities ‘alive’ until late in the evening. Lombardy is also a region of renowned national and international importance in the production of DOP, IGP and DOC specialties, with a total of 75 products including wines, cheeses, olive oil, cured meats and sweets, which so attract tourists from all over the world. Adding to the value of all this are the quality and comfortable accommodations, the trained and professional staff who are ready to help you, all set within a framework of efficiency for which we Lombards are famous.

eonardo and Milan were made for each other - on the one hand the universal artist, engineer, architect, painter and musician; on the other, an expanding metropolis, with two hundred thousand inhabitants and a Renaissance court like that of Florence, capable of attracting talent and dictating the law to all of Europe in terms of fashion and customs. They met in the Spring of 1482: Leonardo, just thirty years old, spent the longest and most prolific period of his life in Milan. For him, trained in Florence and now chasing his fortune, it was the perfect place to freely express his creativity. He arrived in the city carrying in his bag a silver lyre in the shape of a horse’s skull, which he designed himself and played like a master. It was a gift for the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Maria Sforza, thirty years old like him, leader and patron of artists and scientists. In Milan Leonardo found two large

building sites under construction and a network of waterways in full development. His attention was initially focused on the Navigli, but it was not the only masterpiece that the Florentine genius left in the city. THE NAVIGLI Milan’s Navigli are artificial canals built between 1179 (Naviglio Grande) and the sixteenth century (Naviglio Martesana) with the aim of making Milan accessible via the Ticino and Adda rivers. When Leonardo da Vinci arrived in the city he was recruited by Ludovico il Moro who assigned him the task of developing a system that would make navigation between Lake Como and Milan possible. Leonardo, who had already designed a system of locks aimed at solving the problem of different water levels, so making the area navigable, did not miss the opportunity to jot down some sketches, which are today preserved in the Navigli Museum. From that moment on, the Navigli were characterized by continuous development, due

to the construction of new canals and locks. This is how the Navigli became an important means of communication for the city of Milan. THE LAST SUPPER One of the most famous and mysterious works in the world, Leonardo’s Last Supper or Cenacle is located in Milan, in the Refectory of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Ludovico il Moro commissioned the work from Leonardo to celebrate the Sforza dynasty. Leonardo worked on it from 1494 to 1497, while executing other paintings at the same time. Il Moro offered Leonardo a piece of land opposite Santa Maria delle Grazie, so that he was close to the work to be

completed: this was Leonardo’s famous Vineyard in Corso Magenta, which cannot be visited at the moment Leonardo chose a dramatic event from the Gospel of St. John, the moment in which Christ, sitting in the centre and surrounded by the apostles, declares that one of them will betray him. The artist constructed the scene using perspective with Christ in the centre, creating the illusion that the space of the room also continues inside the painting, making the viewer a participant in what is happening. It is said that Leonardo da Vinci created his own self-portrait in the figure of Judas Thaddeus. The utensils and tablecloth depicted are those of Leonardo’s time, another a sign

of his contemporaneity. Leonardo experimented not only in the depiction of the scene, but also in the method of its creation: he did not use the fresco technique (that most used for wall paintings), but mixed tempera on plaster. A technique with a beautiful yield but very perishable. Despite many vicissitudes, the masterpiece has reached us intact: when the French conquered the city, Napoleon had the room transformed into a stable, regardless of the masterpiece. During the bombings of August 1943, The Last Supper was miraculously saved, remaining in the open air for almost two years, until the end of the war, covered only by a cloth and sandbags. The 31

THE CODEX ATLANTICUS. 1119 PAPERS, SOME SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO THE CITY OF MILAN work has been replicated over the centuries by dozens of artists, up to the present day. Pop artist Andy Warhol created a series of 60 Last Suppers, and irreverent photographer, David LaChapelle, created Jesus is My Homeboy, where Jesus has a tattoo on his neck and the apostles are depicted as gang members around a table with hamburgers and bottles of beer. THE CODEX ATLANTICUS The Ambrosiana Library and Art Gallery is another place with links to the Florentine Master: it not only houses Leonardo’s magnificent Portrait of a Musician, but also that extraordinary and incomparable collection of papers known as the Codex Atlanticus. 1119 papers, some specifically related to the city of Milan, among which the famous bird’s eye view of the city, the study for the San Cristoforo canal, the design for the equestrian monument in honour of Francesco Sforza and research for the Cathedral lantern. But also civil engineering studies, hydraulic devices, rope machines, 32

for the textile industry, for the production of mechanical instruments, punching machines and even... automatic rotisseries. If the content of the Atlanticus Codex is extraordinary, the story that accompanies it is no less fascinating: it is a miscellaneous collection, created in the second half of the sixteenth century by the sculptor Leone Leoni who had hoarded Da Vinci’s material. The artist made a real assembly work, arranging loose sheets or extracts from the master’s various notebooks on large-format pages. These drawings and notes encompass Leonardo’s entire career, from 1478, when he was 26 years old, until his death (which occurred in France on 2 May 1519), and represent the richest documentation of his very varied, and often brilliant, studies. Leoni’s heirs then attempted to sell the collection to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo II de Medici, who, ill-advised, evaluated the proposal negatively. However, the Milanese Gaetano Arconati proved to be more far-sighted,

not only did he acquire Leonardo’s codex, but in 1637 he donated it to the Ambrosiana Library founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. At the beginning of the 19th century Napoleon requisitioned everything, taking Leonardo’s documents to Paris. After his fall, the Pope’s special emissary, the sculptor Antonio Canova, managed to have the Atlanticus Codex returned, but not, unfortunately, the other notebooks and various papers which are still preserved today in the National Library of the French capital. The name Atlanticus has nothing to do with the Atlantic Ocean, it was so named because of its size. When Leoni assembled it in the 16th century, he pasted Leonardo’s original papers onto large sheets of the same format used for geographical atlases. Another noteworthy detail is that in the left column Leonardo writes from left to right (a very rare fact for him), while in the right column one can observe his typical mirror-writing writing, from right to left.

ilan’s CityLife district, located a short distance from the old city centre, could alone be worth a trip to the capital of Lombardy. Luxury apartment blocks, cutting edge office towers, well-tended gardens and a vast shopping district with a concentration of electronic. Among the district’s historic building, the most imposing is the Palazzo delle Scintille, a vast pavilion which in the past housed fashion shows and trade fairs. Inaugurated in 1923 and designed in pure Liberty style, it was the city’s first indoor sports arena. Shortly after, the Virgorelli Velodrome and the San Siro Hippodrome were built nearby. In 1946, it even hosted the summer season of La Scala Theatre, which was being restored after being severely dam-

aged by air raids. Next to the pavilion is the CityLife Shopping District, designed by British architecture firm, Zaha Hadid Architects, as part of the old Fiera Milano trade fair grounds redevelopment project. The defining design factor of the shopping complex is the extensive use of bamboo - the material flows from the flooring and extends into columns that reach the ceiling in one swift wave-like motion creating an ultra-modern space, where seductive curves and sinuous corridors host new stores, including Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Moleskine and Adidas. Here, too, the city cultivates its distinctive, typically Milanese, trait of making fashion go hand in hand with design and also with taste, given the wide choice of restaurants and eateries, including a spin-

CityLife’s ‘twisted tower’, now known as the Generali Tower, designed by Zaha Hadid, soars in futuristic style above the city at a height of 177 metres. INSTAGRAMMABLE LOCATIONS If your’s looking to snap some amazing pics in Milan, be sure to check out these colourful spots!

PALAZZO INA

There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram. Corso Sempione, 33

VIA LINCOLN

Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.

FONDAZIONE PRADA

The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee. THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon. Corso Magenta, 12

ARTLINE

Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923. Piazza Elsa Morante

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI

Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century. Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 14

BOSCO VERTICALE

The green skyscraper overlooks the BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi between the districts of Porta Nuova and Isola. It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn. Via Gaetano de Castillia, 11
