THE LAND OF TOURISM

Welcome to Lombardy: art, culture, traditions, nature, sports, business and religious travel, food and wine, and excellence in accommodation. This is a heritage given to us by nature, our history, and one which the Lombards have always known how to enhance. If you are in Milan - the world’s Fashion and Design capital and future stage for the 2026 Winter Olympics - of course you should ‘tour it’ and discover every fascinating corner, but remember that Lombardy is so much more than just Milan. Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Mantua, Lodi, Monza, Pavia, Varese and Sondrio are ‘li le kingdoms’ of cultural uniqueness, landscape and food and wine specialties. In Lombardy you will discover cities of art and enchanting

villages, castles where time has stood still, mountains for skiing or walking, taking in the green and breathing deeply, and lakes that will offer you dreamy views and opportunities for sports. If you wish, you can board boats for ‘slow nature’ tours on our ri-

vers and lakes, where horizons, far from skyscrapers and city buildings, appear even larger. There are experiences to be had from dawn to dusk, and at the end of the day you can enjoy the ‘movida’, that essence in each of our territories that keeps our municipalities ‘alive’ until late in the evening. Lombardy is also a region of renowned national and international importance in the production of DOP, IGP and DOC specialties, with a total of 75 products including wines, cheeses, olive oil, cured meats and sweets, which so a ract tourists from all over the world. Adding to the value of all this are the quality and comfortable accommodations, the trained and professional staff who are ready to help you, all set within a framework of efficiency for which we Lombards are famous.

SYMBOL OF THE CITY

The Duomo di Milano in the words of archpriest Monsignor Borgonovo

TEXT Francesca Lombardi
26 CULTURE
Above: the view from the terraces Below:thecathedralfromthesquare

We enter the Duomo from the western side and move towards the apse, which faces east. When we enter the cathedral we make a choice to walk back in time in spiritual terms to reach the rising star, Christ resurrected, represented by the Raza: a radiant sun at the centre of the rose window in the apse and a religious symbol for the faithful, which also had political significance as the emblem of the Visconti dynasty. Proceeding down the central nave between the 52 columns - one for every week of the year - we’re figuratively moving in the opposite direction from death; we’re moving towards life.” With these words, Monsignor Gianantonio Borgonovo, archpriest of the Duomo since 2012, introduces the cathedral. He talks of spirit and substance, architecture and the soul, art and tradition, but he also lets

us in on some fascinating details. “I’ll tell you a couple of things that not many people know.

Near the main entrance there’s a sundial on the floor. A beam of sunlight comes through a gnomonic hole in the ceiling and falls onto a long brass line, marking midday at any time of year. Although it’s very old - it was installed in 1768 - thanks to recent adjustments, the sundial is still accurate to this day. The second curious thing is the red doorway at the centre of the vault in the apse: this is where a precious relic is kept: a nail from the True Cross. Every year, on the Saturday before 14 September, the Rite of the Nivola takes place: the Archbishop of Milan ascends to the tabernacle in the Nivola, a unique wooden ‘li ’ in the shape of a cloud, painted with angels in 1612 by Landriani, to remove the relic, which is

It was St Charles Borromeo who first carried the Holy Nail in procession during the plague in October 1576; a wooden crucifix was built for the purpose, which can be seen today in the parish church of Trezzo sull’Adda.”

Monsignor Borgonovo makes special mention of the stained glass windows which - even more than the Duomo’s terraces - have a specific spiritual significance: “In the past, stained glass windows were the Biblia Pauperum, in other

words the Bible of the poor, since until the early 20th century many people were unable to read and write. So the windows were a part of the catechism along with the sermons; later, with the advent of electric lighting and the spread of education, they became, paradoxically, a Biblia Agnosticorum: skilfully backlit from the inside, they acted as an advertisement of the Faith for ina entive passers-by, who might pause and admire the spectacular kaleidoscope of colours and figures… that’s the hope, anyway!”

And of course we have to talk about the Madonnina,

the symbol of the cathedral and the city itself: “On the night of 27 December 1774, as the Milanese slept, the golden statue of the Virgin Mary appeared on the very tip of the highest spire. Can you imagine what the weather was like? 27th December, in Milan, at that height…! The Madonnina up there, the first among all the faithful, reminds us believers that we’re gradually moving eastwards, towards God, the ultimate destination of our journey.

“But the Madonnina also has enormous sentimental and popular value for the inhabitants of Milan, and there is a custom dating

back to the 1930s, when the first skyscrapers began to be built in the city: no building can be higher than the statue.

To this day, although the skyline of Milan is studded with tall buildings, when any exceeds 108 metres, the tradition is to place a small replica of the Madonnina on the roof, reminding us that we may have risen, but She, the Mother of God, remains closest to heaven. It’s an oxymoron, to say the least… like saying infinite finitude”. To learn more about the history of the Duomo, you can visit the adjoining Museum: 26 exhibition rooms and

a chronological itinerary that follows every stage of the cathedral’s construction, from its foundation

in 1386 to the 20th century. In a recent innovation, the Duomo becomes 0.4, offering new digital opportunities: an extraordinary vir-

tual experience to explore the Candoglia quarry, source of the marble used to build the cathedral, using special headsets available at the museum; or a stunning immersive guided tour that takes us to the age of St Ambrose, reveals the workings of the sundial and ascends to the Holy Nail in the Nivola, while exploring the faces and facades of the cathedral through the centuries. Lastly, October brings two very special events: a playful tour for children on Sunday 8th and a visit to the cathedral’s Great Organ on Sunday 15th, to mark the Duomo’s birthday.

NATURE AND LIFE

Fondazione Furla and GAM - Galleria d’Arte Moderna together again, for the new edition of Furla Series - an exhibition project providing a unique opportunity for past masters and protagonists of the contemporary scene to come face to face - which this year brings to the spaces of the prestigious museum the works of Suzanne Jackson with Somethings in the World, the first exibition to be dedicated to the artist an European Institution, which can be visited until December 17.

In show, a selection of iconic works, previously unseen works and new productions that enter into dialogue with the museum context and its own collection.

A fi y years glimpse of re-

search that retraces key moments of the artist’s career, from her dreamlike paintings of the 1970s to the radical experiments of the most recent, free-hanging ‘anti-canvases’.

Her initial figurative production evolved over the years, progressively approaching abstraction, until arriving at the elab-

oration of a very personal vocabulary in which painting takes on both a sculptural and environmental dimension.

A figurative production which is the nourished result of her experience in dance, theater and poetry, where abstract references to the nature and life are always evident with a creative sensitivity with which the artist expresses herself by delicate metaphorical shapes.

Suzanne Jackson was born on 1944 and she grew up in the Yukon which became a federal state of Alaska on 1950. She moved to California enjoying the local artist community to the point of opening her own studio: Gallery 32 one of the major reference point for the underground art scene.

WINE EXPERIENCE

Wine enthusiasts can choose from over 100 wineries scattered around Lake Iseo, the Po Valley and the Pre-Alps. A wine tour can start from the Guido Berlucchi winery in Borgonato where the first “Metodo Classico” wine of this territory was produced in 1961, and then continue with other famous wineries such as Ca’ del Bosco in Erbusco, where you can taste excellent wines such as Annamaria Clementi, one of the best sparkling wines produced in Italy. There is also a sculpture park that the winery owners wanted to create among the vineyards and the area surrounding the wine cellar. The sculptures featured include Solar Gate by Arnaldo Pomodoro at the entrance of the cellar which opens onto this open-air museum, Heroes of Light by Igor Mitoraj, a marble head on top of the hills or the Blue Guardians, a pack of wolves sculpted by the group of artists Cracking Art. In Erbusco, another historic winery here is Bellavista whose corporate philosophy is based

on its desire to make its wine cellar and land accessible to everyone. That is why its doors are always open to visitors for activities, guided tours (from 90 minutes to 3 hours) and tastings to learn all about the secrets of growing vines and winemaking.

Close to the winery and surrounded by vineyards, L’Albereta is the only Relais & Chateaux in Franciacorta created by the same family that owns Bellavista, the More i family. With its 53 rooms and suites, five restaurants - including the exclusive restaurant LeoneFelice Vista Lago with Chef Fabio Abba ista -, and the only Chenot signature SPA in Italy, it has rightfully entered the history of Italian high hospitality and is celebrating 30 years this year.

FOOD

Among the excellent local products, there is robiola cheese of Brescia, fatulì of Val Saviore, salami and dried sardines of Monte Isola (actually agone fish which is le to dry on a terrace in the sun and wind for about a month).

by the wife of the famous naturalist Marco De Marchi and converted into a museum. The collections illustrate the period of Italian history from Napoleon’s first Italian campaign (1796) to Rome’s annexation to the Kingdom of Italy (1870). Via Borgonuovo, 23 ph. +39 02 88464173

INSTAGRAMMABLE LOCATIONS

PALAZZO INA

There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram.

VIA LINCOLN

Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.

FONDAZIONE PRADA

The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee.

THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

ARTLINE

Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.

Piazza Elsa Morante

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI

Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century.

BAM LA BIBLIOTECA DEGLI ALBERI

A contemporary botanical garden located among the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova with paths that merge with each other forming geometrical patterns, circular forests and flower gardens. The Biblioteca degli Alberi is one of the most representative parks of the new Milan, greener and more sustainable, where you can spend time among nature and attend artistic and cultural events.

BOSCO VERTICALE

The green skyscraper overlooks the BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi between the districts of Porta Nuova and Isola. It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn.

QUARTIERE ORTICA

An open-air museum, open to the public, free of charge. It is OR.ME Ortica Memoria: 20 works of urban art among the largest in Italy, made by the collective of artists known as OrticaNoodles. Each different mural tells a story about Milan of the 20th century, a route that invites both the Milanese and tourists to leave the city centre to discover a different part of our city.
