What is your relationship with Florence?
My family lives in Florence, I live in the green ring surrounding the city center. Florence is the city where I studied, where I debuted as an actor, but my most important came later from abroad.
Has Florence ever inspired you for your novels or theatrical works?
I have always written stories set abroad. I enjoy the relationship between the places and the world and, in Florence, one must go searching for them in the folds of the stories I tell. For instance, the story of the inter

Ho sempre scritto storie ambientante all’estero.

MILANO ITINERARY
Milan is the city where I was born and where I have lived most of the phases that have made it the international me tropolis it is today: the years of terror ism, the swinging Eighties with their unprecedented effervescence, then the Nineties of the growth and boom of the fashion industry. You cannot understand today’s Milan without knowing what it was before”. Gian Luca Bauzano writes for Corriere della Sera, expert in the his tory of costume, fashion, music and en tertainment. Growing up in a cultured and brilliant context, deeply imbued with Milanese culture “where speaking Mil anese was considered a sign of belong ing to the city”, he experienced fantastic encounters and places. Indro Montanel
side with Guido Vergani, he admired the stubbornness of Giulia Maria Crespi, owner of Corriere della Sera and founder of FAI (Italian Environmental Fund). An expert on Carlo Porta, poet and the most famous writer in Milanese, if asked what the soul of Milan is, he replies that it is “The result of an intricate web of human industriousness where stories of great ar chitects (from Portaluppi to Belgioioso), of major investments and urban projects are intertwined, without forgetting the tra dition of Maria Theresa and the Austrians with which the city is deeply imbued”. And then, driven by his sensitive familiarity with the city, we venture to ask “and his Milan?” “Milan has its own distinctive feature, it transforms completely and changes colour between midnight and dawn. In this handful of hours, the streets where I love to walk are via dei Cappuccini - behind Corso Venezia, dotted with beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in der around its garden as in a dream -, via Cappuccio which is on the Corso Magenta side, so we are in ‘Roman’ Milan, and then when you go around Piazza della Scala, more towards San Fedele than on the side of the fashion district. So if you walk in these areas, at times when there is no one about, then you really absorb the city, you realize what Milan really is.“

Fashion
In the absence of a Fash ion Museum in Milan, the number one area for fashion enthusiasts is via Monte Na poleone. It was in Palazzo Crespi, situated in Via Sant’An drea, one of its side streets, that Milanese couturier Biki, who transformed Maria Callas into a style icon, had her the Milanese aristocracy. Palazzo Crespi belonged to Fosca Crespi, Biki’s mother, not far from Via Durini was Palazzo Toscanini; and in via Monte Napoleone, the building that now houses the Louis Vuitton boutique, was once the home of the great writer Carlo Porta. From Biki onwards, Milan’s main couturiers concentrated there, putting the seal on an historic marriage between the neighbourhood and fashion.

Moda
Gardens
In the city I always look for the opposite of what tourists this I recommend the small public garden half way along via dei Giardini Another is behind Villa Reale (Palazzo Belgioioso), a very small, quiet and safe garden. And then the Giardinetto del Verziere attached to the Milan State University, in front of the aforementioned Church of San Bernardino.
Art foundations
Without doubt, the Prada Foundation, the most important today.
Artisans’ workshops
Legatoria Conti Borbone book bindery is a magical place where books are bound and saved. A real workshop that with its plethora of old volumes, it is a treasure trove of beauty. Another address I’m fond of is Cartoleria Pettinar oli, which has moved to via Brera. Here we are in the home and get your custom made Christmas cards.
Cafe
I’ve always been a regular at Sant’Ambroeus in Corso Mat teotti.
Food Traditional dishes I love are risotto and veal cutlet alla Mil anese. If I had to recommend where to go and try them, I’d say Latteria in via San Marco, one of the few places where tradition is respected as it should be.
Giardini

VENEZIA ITINERARY
“I consider Venice as ‘my’ city. I have al ways lived here even if I was not born here. I know it like the back of my hand, but even that is not enough to discover all what Venice offers. There is always some place that even a local person may miss or simply does not know it even Toexists.”tell us about Venice is Matteo Corv ino, a Parisian trained interior design er with a career in cinema and plenty of experience in the theatre industry. Corvino is one of the most important organisers for major events in Italy and abroad. All the most important events in the lagoon, from lavish weddings for oriental tycoons to the dinner parties in Palazzo Grassi for the Biennale Art exhi bition as well as fashion events bear his signature. He also organised incredible soirèès in Bangkok, Paris, Florence or New York, taking inspiration from the aesthetic ideas and epochs of all kinds, and researching old and new materials and technologies. Matteo has a natural gift. He has a good sense of humour and always smiles. He is direct, helpful and accustomed to interacting with special personalities. He lives, works and entertains what during the Age of Enlightenment was called in short ‘the world’ in a bright sixteenth-century building in the Sestiere of Dorsodu ro, just steps away from the Veronese church of San Sebas tiano and the intense blue waterfront of the Zattere “Venice is my soul, a never-ending source of inspiration,
ic beauty – explains Matteo Corvino – and by its incessant, magical, discerning and nuanced essence capable of turning everyday life into myth. The unusual thing about this city is that every time you try to reach the upper parts, you get lost, and it seems as if you can touch everything with your hand…
over it like a gigantic S. This means that seen from a higher position, the bell towers, churches and buildings seem closer than what they really are.”
Corvi no è uno dei maggiori organizzatori di grandi eventi in Italia e all’estero.

Coffee bars
Having lived in Rome for many years, I have a par ticular taste for coffee. So for me, the best one in Venice is the one served at Harry’s Bar. Arrigo, the legendary Arrigo Cipriani, owner and patron of Harry’s bar, knows how to do everything well. So also his coffee is of the highest quality.

Artisans
The artisans are returning to Venice, a symbol of the city’s qual ity and ancient history. There is Orsoni who makes and restores mosaics for museums and basilicas around the world. He will also make the mosaics – all made by hand in silver leaf and platinum bronze – for the domes of a small church which has been transformed into a private residence, and the one I am designing as interior designer. The work is carried out in collab oration with the Cicognani-Kalla studio of New York and for the architectural part, we are using the Gobbato-De Luca studio.
Bacari
A bacaro is the typical Venetian bar where they serve snacks and sandwiches – the so-called cicheti – accompanied with a glass of wine. One I can highly recommend is La Vedova in Cananregio located in Strada Nuova near the Ca’ d ’Oro. Here everything is prepared on the spot, something that is quite rare in a bacaro.
Restaurants
I have my favourite restaurant. It is run by an Apulian couple. I hope the Venetians don’t mind! If you go there saying, “I am a friend of Matteo Corvino and I want the “sòpa de scoasse” – in Venetian: garbage soup – you can be sure to eat one of the best but is served with slices of toasted bread; seasoned with garlic for those who love it. The Osteria Ca’ del Vento is located in a windy street that leads to the Zattere, almost on my doorstep.
Bookshops
The Human Safety Net, the foundation created by Generali is transforming what used to be a shop selling glass objects in Piazza San Marco into a small bookshop of art. And I hope that by the end of the year, there will be again a proper bookshop of art in the heart of Venice.
