CALAX

Now almost nearing completion, the Cavite-Laguna Expressway, also called CALAX, is a four-lane 45-kilometer toll road. It will connect the ManilaCavite Toll Expressway (CAVITEX) and Mamplasan in Biñan, Laguna.

CALAX will seamlessly connect several towns and key cities, accelerating the growth of business and tourism in the region. It will have the following interchanges:

• Kawit Interchange

• Open Canal Service Road Interchange

• Governor’s Drive Interchange

• Silang East Interchange

• Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Interchange

• Laguna Boulevard Interchange

• Technopark Interchange

• Biñan, Laguna Toll Barrier

The entire length of CALAX is equipped with an Automatic License Plate Recognition System that enables a barrier-less entry.

CALAX is designed to have state-of-theart and environmentally friendly tollway facilities that not only reduce travel time and traffic congestion but also decrease carbon emissions.

Each toll plaza is equipped with solar panels to power its operations from this low-carbon energy source. After a year of using solar panels, CALAX has contributed the equivalent of 1,282 trees through 42,953.42kg of carbon avoidance.

Another energy efficiency measure is the use of LED fixtures for all lights and roadway lighting.

The CALAX Rewilding Project is another initiative to turn CALAX into a green highway. This project is being undertaken in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Oceans, and Landscapes (SIBOL).

CAVITEX

The Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway Project or CAVITEX is a 14-kilometer expressway along the coast of Bacoor Bay, connecting Roxas Boulevard to Cavite, with toll plazas at Parañaque, Bacoor, and Kawit.

This major road project was designed to strengthen the commercial link between Metro Manila and the booming provinces of Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas. In particular, it is seen to ease traffic on a major stretch for travelers going to Cavite province, which hosts an export processing zone and other businesses and factories.

An important development on this project is the CAVITEX C5 Link linking Parañaque to Taguig with a flyover crossing the South Luzon Expressway. This 7.7km urban expressway starts from Carlos P. Garcia Avenue in Taguig with a flyover that crosses SLEX-Skyway, and connects to CAVITEX along the coast of Manila. It offers easier travel between Cavite province and the cities of Taguig, Makati, Pasay, Pasig, Quezon CIty, Manila, and Las Piñas.

MPT SOUTH HUB

The Hub serves as the headquarters of MPT South, and is strategically situated in Imus, Cavite, to serve as the center of activity for all the present and future concession roads of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation in the south.

The Hub building design is inspired by modern industrial elements to simulate a bridge structure that represents the central roles that infrastructure and engineering play in the company’s business. The fourstory building has a total floor area of 5,240sqm.

Its Biophilic Design connects the occupants closely to nature, creating a healthy built environment through its natural lighting and ventilation, ambiance, landscape features, and a full view of the surrounding areas.

17 April 2023

LEED GOLD CERTIFIED

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a building certification program for healthy, efficient, carbon and cost-saving green buildings. Last January 2022, MPT South Hub was awarded a LEED Gold certification as a building that contributes to reducing global climate change, protects and restores water resources, promotes sustainable

and regenerative material cycles, protects and enhances biodiversity and ecosystem services, and enhances community quality of life and individual human health.

BuildingDesign

• The building’s facade is clad with passive energy saving Low-E (low-emissivity) glass walls that minimize infrared and ultraviolet rays while allowing full daylight illumination.

• It is strategically-positioned so the glass walls are not directly exposed to the East-West sun, thus reducing heat gain and optimizing the aircooling systems.

• It offers a full view of its surroundings, allowing natural daylight and air, and connecting occupants to the environment.

WaterEfficiency

• By using modern water-efficient fixtures, the Hub consumes at least 40% less indoor water.

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 18 April 2023
Showcase Metro Pacific Tollways South

• At the same time, a rain water harvesting system also reduces outdoor water consumption by 40%. This is achieved by utilizing the 1,300sqm roof deck as a rain water catchment that collects roughly 300 cubic meters of rainwater used for watering plants and flushing toilets.

SolarEnergy

• Solar panels installed on all car parking sheds contribute 97.37% of the Hub’s energy requirement, thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions while saving on energy consumption.

Ø 1,184 units of solar panels

Ø 389,382.41kwh of solar power generated in 1 year (May 2021 to May 2022)

Ø 342,656.52kg of carbon dioxide offset

Ø 10,277 trees planted (equivalent)

CoolingSystem

• An energy-efficient air-conditioning system with natural air supply and exhaust provides both cooling comfort as well as fresh air environment to occupants.

• Air conditioning refrigerants do not contain ozone-depleting substances.

SmartSystems

• The entire building is controlled by a Building Management.

• Its Traffic Control Room is equipped with a total of 24 units of 55-inch LED screens showing CCTV footages of the expressways 24/7.

• LED lighting fixtures are time-controlled to reduce light pollution.

19 April 2023

MPT SOUTH HIVE

Another structure within the MPT South complex is the HIVE, a recreational facility for its employees. Its 1,665 square meter floor area includes a basketball court, a gym, a band room, lockers, and small classrooms. With solar panels installed on its roof, a wellventilated Olympic-standard basketball court and bleachers, as well as air-conditioned classrooms and gym, the Hive earned its LEED Certification last May 2022.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

MPTC has identified the following priorities for its sustainability initiatives:

• Drive decarbonization of the transport sector by shifting to electric vehicles (EVs) in its operations

• Design, build, operate, and maintain infrastructure with the least environmental and social disruption

• Improve the customer experience

• Design for resilience

• Drive product utilization

In addition, MPTC supports the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly in upgrading all industries and infrastructures to make them sustainable (SDG 9), and promoting innovation in building assets in adherence to the company’s commitments to climate action (SDG 13).

THE AGUINALDO SHRINE houses the memorabilia of the country’s first president and revolutionary war hero. The ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo is now a museum dedicated not only to him but also to some of the biggest battles of the revolutionary war in the province.

25 April 2023

The property was donated to the Philippine Government in 1964, a year before Aguinaldo’s death. It is best known as the site where the Philippine flag was first presented to our countrymen on July 12, 1898, signaling the country’s declaration of independence from its Spanish colonizers.

The museum houses some of the late president’s memorabilia and gives visitors a peek at the life of Aguinaldo. There are also

interactive exhibits and dioramas commemorating some of the biggest battles in the province during the revolution.

This iconic landmark is a must-visit for history junkies or just curious minds who want to learn more about our rich history. Entrance is free for everyone, but for big groups such as school field trips, it’s recommended that you call ahead to schedule and coordinate your visit.

CAVITE IS ALSO HOME to some of the country’s oldest churches. Among them is the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of the Pillar, otherwise known as Imus Cathedral. The Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Imus who governs the whole province of Cavite.

29 April 2023

The cathedral has its roots in the 18th century as a chapel created by the Augustinian Recollects, but this original structure was destroyed by an earthquake. The current structure was built in the early 19th century.

Enshrined within is the canonicallycrowned Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Imus (Our Lady of Pillar of Imus) who is also the patron saint of the cathedral. The Diocese is said to host the longest procession in the province of Cavite.

Convenient Technology

Smart controls allow the driver to remotely start the ignition as well as open/close windows through the smart key. It has a tire pressuring monitoring system, an emergency stop signal, and hill-start assist control for added safety.

The Stargazer is equipped with Hyundai SmartSense Technology, a cutting-edge driver-assistance system to keep both passengers and pedestrians safe, as follows:

DrivingSafety

• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – alerts the driver if the system detects a risk of collision from the front like sudden slow-downs or stops. In emergency situations, the system will automatically apply emergency braking.

• Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) – makes use of the front-facing camera to detect lanes and alert the driver if the vehicle deviates from its route without using proper turning signal and automatically steers the wheel to keep the vehicle in its position.

• Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA) – monitors blind spots while driving by alerting the driver through the rearview mirror. Designed particularly for moving out of parallel parking spots.

• Safe Exit Warning (SEW) – sends a cluster message and a warning by turning on the side mirror warning light when a vehicle is approaching from behind while someone is opening the door.

• Driver Attention Warning (DAW) – analyzes the driver’s attention level and provides a warning as an alert to stay active.

• High Beam Assist (HBA) – switches the high beams to low beams when the system detects an oncoming vehicle on the opposite side of the road.

75 April 2023
Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist

DrivingComfort

• Lane Follow Assist (LFA) – utilizes the frontfacing camera to recognize lane markers and controls the steering wheel so that the vehicle stays on its lane.

ParkingSafety

• Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist (RCCA) – monitors rear blind spots with radar and issues an instrument cluster message, plays a warning sound and turns on the outside mirror warning lamp if a vehicle is detected. Should the driver fail to take action, the system automatically engages the brakes to prevent collision.

• Reverse Parking Distance Warning (PDW-R) –uses an ultrasonic sensor system to detect obstacles behind and provides an audible warning when danger is detected.

• Rear View Monitor (RVM) – provides a live rear view while driving in reverse and displays the projected trajectory while backing up.

The Hyundai Stargazer is offered at three trim levels: 1.5 GL IVT, 1.5 GLS IVT, and 1.5 GLS Premium IVT. Four color options are available: Creamy White Pearl, Dragon Red Pearl, Midnight Black Pearl, and Magnetic Silver Metallic.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) lets the D-Max run at preset speed and maintains proper distance by slowing down and speeding up in relation to the vehicle ahead.

Automatic High Beam (AHB) scans the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles, then automatically switches between high and low beam, as needed.

Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) is activated when the following distance suddenly gets smaller and the system determines that a collision is unavoidable.

Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) uses radar sensors to detect following vehicles in the adjacent lanes and notifies the driver through an indicator on the side mirrors.

Forward Collision Warning

(FCW) alerts the driver when the D-Max senses that it is getting too close to the vehicle in front.

Lane Departure Warning

(LDW) alerts the driver when the vehicle starts to drift or deviate from the lane markings on the road.

105 April 2023
Dual-Zone Climate Control Leather-Appointed-Seat

Manual Speed Limiter (MSL) sets the maximum speed limit for the D-Max, and can only be deactivated when the driver steps strongly on the accelerator, such as when overtaking.

Multi-Collision Brake (MCB) automatically applies the brakes when the airbags are activated in a collision to avoid further collision damage.

Parking Aids use ultrasonic sensors to detect objects around the vehicle and informs the driver through buzzer sounds and the infotainment display.

Pedal Misapplication Mitigation restricts engine output when the driver accidentally presses down on the accelerator and the camera detects an obstacle in front.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) uses radar sensors to monitor if there are vehicles approaching the D-Max when reversing out of a parking space or driveway.

Turn Assist monitors oncoming traffic while turning at an intersection and will activated the AEB as needed.

Seiko Prospex Save The Ocean Limited Edition (SPB333)

SEIKO CELEBRATES the 110th anniversary of its first wristwatch with the release of a series of commemorative timepieces including a new Prospex diver’s watch which, like all the timepieces in the series, draws its inspiration from Seiko’s rich technological and design heritage.

The new creation’s intricately textured dial captures the power of the polar glaciers that shape the landscapes and seascapes of the Arctic and Antarctic, where Seiko’s reputation for reliable and durable watches was forged in the 1960s and ‘70s when adventurers and researchers wore them on expeditions to the North and South Poles.

The watch’s case is based on the Seiko 6105-8000 diver’s watch from 1968, whose characteristically curved silhouette and crown positioned at the four o’clock position inspired the designs of many iconic diver’s watches that followed.

The watch is presented on a five-row steel bracelet with a secure clasp and extender and is also offered with an additional strap whose polyester material is made entirely of recycled plastic bottles.

The alternate strap features a traditional Japanese braiding technique called Seichu. Its strength and resistance to degradation caused by exposure to sunlight meet the demanding standards of Seiko’s diver’s watches and are also perfect for use underwater. Thanks to its unique braiding pattern, the strap has flexibility and air permeability that ensure comfort on the wrist

The tried-and-trusted Caliber 6R35, a 21,600vph automatic movement, delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. The stainless steel case and bracelet have a super-hard coating, and an antireflective coating on the inner surface of the sapphire crystal ensures high legibility from every angle. All twelve indexes and hands are generously coated with Lumibrite to maximize legibility in the dark.

The new Seiko SPB333 is available at Seiko Boutiques and select retail stores worldwide as a limited edition of 5,000.

The watch joins the Save the Ocean series, which expresses the Seiko Prospex mission to preserve the world’s oceans for future generations. Seiko Prospex delivers financial and other support to chosen marine charities.

ASUS VIVOBOOK PRO 16 OLED

The laptop remains one of the most versatile tools in one’s tech arsenal. The ability to crack it open and work anywhere the moment something needs doing just can’t be understated. Few manufacturers know the power of the modern laptop like ASUS. They’ve been at this a long time and have always delivered some of the best mobile computing devices in whatever market they put themselves in. Can they continue this trend with the content creator-centric Vivobook Pro 16 OLED (K6602)? We’re lucky enough to get to find out.

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
128 April 2023
LAPTOP

DESIGN

ASUS has chosen to equip this model of the Vivobook with a rightly massive 16inch display, so there’s no getting around the fact that it’s a little on the large side, but it’s thin. 19.9mm is a feat, particularly considering the rest of the hardware they managed to get into such little space.

The lid is a sturdy aluminum alloy made to take a few bumps, letting you take it

everywhere. There’s a pair of little raised plates that gives this Vivobook a little more character than your average laptop, and the outside is finished in what ASUS has called “Quiet Blue” that looks more like a fetching deep gray in all but the brightest of light.

Open the lid, and you’re greeted with an appropriately massive touchpad and a

large keyboard complete with a separate number pad. There are details to add visual interest, such as some stripey accents to the “Enter” key, some painted bits atop the function keys, and an orange “Escape” key, just to break up what would otherwise be a monotonous view. They went out of their way to keep things interesting, and I do feel they managed to pull it off without being too cluttered.

HARDWARE

This is where things get interesting. The star of the show is undoubtedly that massive 16-inch Pantone-validated OLED display and its 120Hz refresh rate. It’s the most beautiful screen I have ever had the pleasure of using on a mobile device and it has honestly spoiled me rotten.

Running the show is a 12th Generation Intel Core i7-12700H processor running

at a brisk 2.3 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, and NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti discrete graphics. Given the need for extra peripherals needed for the art of content creation, there’s thankfully no shortage of ports on this Vivobook, including Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, both of which support display out and PD charging, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, an HDMI 2.1 port, 3.5mm headphone jack, LAN port and microSD card reader. You’ll be fine leaving the USB hub home with this in your kit.

USER EXPERIENCE

I used the OLED version of the Vivobook more or less exclusively for the whole time I had it. This allowed me to put it through its paces for writing, gaming, and a little bit of multimedia action.

The screen is massive, and it’s super sharp. The colors are gorgeous, and the 120Hz refresh rate is wonderful. It gives you plenty of room to have multiple reference windows open while working on a main document. The sharpness of the screen and that great refresh rate makes having lots of windows open much more pleasant. Even crammed full of news pages, Reddit subs, and YouTube videos, I barely had any eye fatigue despite working my usual hours, thanks to the TÜV Rheinland certification for 70 percent reduced blue light emissions. The large touchpad was an absolute joy to use, as was the pleasantly tactile keyboard, and the fingerprint scanner in the power button makes security a non-issue.

The processor and generous helping of RAM also made short work of multitasking. Editing a podcast on Audacity with multiple hi-resolution audio files while having images, documents, and even videos in the background was no trouble for the

laptop. If the fans kicked on at some point because of the load, I didn’t notice.

That wonderful screen also does images and videos justice. A Pantone–validated screen means you can trust the colors, and while I’m not into creating visual art, my job does require me to proof images and videos, and that display is a massive help. You won’t need to plug into an external display to get the visual fidelity you need. Speakers on this thing are shockingly loud, and at no point did I need to swap out for headphones, even while watching videos on our street-facing balcony here at home.

While this is a laptop made for content creation, and yes, the GPU is more than capable of the heavy lifting required for its intended purpose, gaming was something of a mixed bag. Wi-Fi 6e compatibility is great with the appropriate router, giving excellent throughput and stable connectivity through online gaming sessions. The RTX 3050 Ti graphics card averages 85FPS on a less graphic-intensive title like Ready or Not. However, with heavier games such as Cyberpunk 2077, high graphics settings resulted in sub-30 FPS frame rates, but spending time dialing the settings should still let one play AAA

titles without much pain. Your gaming experience on the laptop helped along even further with the MUX switch, giving the display direct access to the GPU, significantly reducing latency.

Battery life was also impressive, given the display size. Starting at 100 percent at 8AM, I was at about 30 percent at 11AM, and it didn’t go into a power-saving mode (20 percent) until about noon. The charger topped the battery up impressively fast. At 150W charging, I didn’t even notice it was back up to full charge somewhere past the one-hour mark.

VALUE

As configured, the Vivobook Pro 16 OLED I reviewed comes in at PHP104,995. This is admittedly quite a high price of admission, but bearing in mind how versatile the machine is, I think it’s fair value. As my use cases move more into content creation over gaming, I’ve come to appreciate the screen much more than a beefy GPU. You’d be quite hard-pressed to find a better display than the one on this laptop. This, coupled with great battery life and impressively fast charging, makes for a compelling purchase.

OPPO RENO 8T

SMARTPHONE

OPPO Reno 8T is a sophisticated phone that exudes luxury due to its stylish design and outstanding camera features. With all the specs and design made by OPPO, I think this is a creatively- crafted smartphone. But is this a “must-have” phone for 2023?

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
132 April 2023

DESIGN

OPPO gets a thumbs-up for the back cover of the Reno 8T, with its distinctive look. The Sunset Orange-colored version is made from a fiberglass-leather design for a highclass feel that makes this flagship phone stand out.

In addition, the leather texture prevents the phone from slipping, protects against scratches, and avoids fingerprint smudges. I’m not a fan of camera bumps, and thankfully, the Reno 8T comes with a transparent shockproof case that secures the camera layout from unnecessary damage.

A unique feature that makes it stand out is a breathing light in the rear camera which activates whenever I receive notifications and phone calls. This feature is helpful since it alerts me that someone messaged or called me, especially during working hours. The color of the breathing light can be customized through its settings.

As for its dimensions, it is surprisingly light at 183g and 7.85mm thin. If you are wondering if it’s easy to carry around, the answer is yes, it is comfortable to keep the phone in hand the whole day.

On the right edge of the phone is a power button, while the volume buttons, the SIM tray, and the micro-SD card tray are at the left edge. Dual stereo speakers are found at the top and bottom edges. Also at the bottom are the USB Type-C charging port, earphone jack, and main mic, while the other sub-mic is located at the top.

HARDWARE

What about performance improvements?

The OPPO Reno 8T runs on the Helio G99, a mid-range processor released in 2022. It obtained a single-core score of 637 on Geekbench 6, indicating that it is able to handle heavy gaming and editing apps. Its 1,824 multi-core score shows that the phone can also be used for multitasking.

The Reno 8T has an large storage capacity of 256GB and 8GB memory that can be expanded further by converting unused storage to operating memory. Its 5000mAH battery system guarantees long hours of use, while its with 33W SUPERVOOC charging that can quickly juice up the phone for two hours of calls in just 5 minutes.

It has a rear 100MP portrait camera with special features such as AI portrait, flash snapshot, selfie HDR, and bokeh flare

portrait. The new 40x microlens rear camera is able to capture even the threads of a cloth and dust from a plant.

The screen display of the Reno 8T is also a special 90Hz AMOLED eye-care display

that adjusts automatically but never leaves out bright colors while watching movies or playing games. Its 100% DCI-P3 high-color gamut that ensures good color quality while the backlight adjusts for viewing comfort.

Selfie HDR Bokeh Flare Portrait

USER EXPERIENCE

The OPPO Reno 8T really stands out design-wise, thanks to its leather-textured back cover, and its breathing light. Performance-wise, it’s also good enough to use as an everyday phone.

I had fun using the rear camera as it produces good quality photos with the help of AI technology that sharpens the image and brings out the colors of the subject, making it worthy of its tagline, “The Portrait Expert.”

The front camera is all right, although photos could turn out grainy. Similarly, videos also tend to be grainy as it only shoots at 30fps. The video stabilization system needs improvement to reduce shakiness. I am puzzled by the 40x microlens rear camera, as I don’t know when to use this feature, unless I want to capture what splinters looks like in human hands.

Turning to entertainment, I downloaded Genshin Impact, Mobile Legends, and Call of Duty Genshin Impact can be played in the lowest setting. Even though the virtual landscapes are loading while flying around, the characters are not lagging especially when there is an extravagant event. Mobile Legends can be played up to the highest settings, making the whole battle experience smooth and flawless. Call of Duty can be played in medium setting.

When playing games, a gamer setting mode appears at the side of the screen, and I was able to configure setting options whenever I wanted to focus on raising my ranks in Mobile Legends or Genshin Impact.

Watching movies on the Reno 8T is epic since as the whole display turns into a little movie screen that you can watch anytime, anywhere. Along with its crisp audio quality, you actually get movie theater vibes.

Overall, I really appreciated how light and thin the phone is because I was able to play games, capture photos, and watch videos comfortably.

So is this a “must-have” phone for 2023? Well, if you’re into stylish looks, yes. If you’re after hardware specifications, probably not.

VALUE

The suggested retail price for the Reno 8T is PHP18,999. This is pricey, given that there are other factors that need to be improved, and there are similar specced phones at more affordable price points. A major point in its favor is its 48-month fluency protection, a feature that keeps the Reno 8T’s hardware and software optimized so it will continue to operate smoothly for 4-years of daily use.

VIVO V27E

SMARTPHONE

With the vivo V27e, vivo has released another remarkable camera in a flagship phone. Does it live up to its claim of being the #Aura Portrait Master?

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
136 April 2023

DESIGN

vivo may have outdone itself on this one, as the V27e is the prettiest and most charming phone design I have ever handled so far. Compared to the rest of the vivo V-series, this one is special.

While retaining the overall box-type structure of the V-series, the V27e is distinct. In particular, the lavender purple color sets off a clean and fresh vibe. The creative fluid design of the back cover turns into chromatic colors when light hits it. With its slim flat 7.69mm frame, the overall look of this phone is very eye-catching. I’m not kidding when

I say that people steal a look whenever I bring it out.

The back cover is made of composite plastic sheets that secures the overall fluid design of the vivo V27e, while also preventing scratches and fingerprint smudges. I just have one concern: the texture is so smooth it could easily slide down from your grip.

vivo probably anticipated this, as the V27e is durable against drops of up to one meter high, and is also resistant to dust and water. Additionally, the frame itself is a different texture that’s less slippery and easier to grip. vivo has also throughtfully included a transparent jelly case for added protection while still

allowing you to flex the phone’s new fluid design.

I used the V27e to take photos and shoot videos for extended periods, and weighing only 186g, it is comfortable to hold

The nano SIM and micro-SD card slot is located at the bottom edge, alongside the USB-C port and speakers. The sub-mic is on the top edge; the volume and power button on the right. The phone does not have a jack for wired earphones.

The main camera is located at the back together with the aura light that looks like a small ring light. The front camera is positioned at the top center of the AMOLED screen display.

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
137 April 2023

HARDWARE

The vivo V27e is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, with 8GB dynamic memory (expandable to 12GB) and 256GB of storage, running on the Android 13 operating system.

Geekbench scores were 708 for single core and 1,814 for multi-core, pointing to smooth performance for work and play settings. Its GPU score is 1321, capable of resolutions up to 120Hz.

The rear and front cameras of the V27e are supported by an aura light portrait system. A small ring light at the back of the phone lights up and brightens the subject to release the colors even at night. Similarly, the front camera has its own light portrait system that automatically activates in dark settings. This feature upgrade elevates mobile photography, as the aura light helps capture better quality images. Still, even without the aura light portrait system, photo quality from V27e is outstanding.

For video mode, vivo added an OIS + EIS dual-ultra stabilization in the V27e, ensure smooth video capture even while walking or despite shaky hands.

Packing a 4600mAh battery, the V27e has enough juice to last the whole day. And if playing heavy games drains your power, its 66W fast-charging system can quickly restore the battery to full in just a few minutes.

USER EXPERIENCE

I can definitely proclaim the vivo V27e is as a legit “Aura Portrait Master,” and I am in awe of its camera performance. I have fallen in love with the aura portrait light system that helps me take night photos without needing to adjust brightness levels, thanks to the built-in ring light.

As for the videos, the V27e is good enough for shooting a short commercial or a school project. The stabilization system helps me shoot footage from different angles. The overall color output for both photos and videos are well-balanced and natural, making the subjects come alive. A vlog movie feature adds built-in effects and animations so you can quickly post to your social media accounts.

The V27e is not just a great camera phone. It is also a practical choice as it can be used for work and for entertainment. Despite just having a single speaker, audio quality is good with all-around audio enhancement.

A game boost setting allows you to play heavy games on the V27e.

For example, on Genshin Impact, I was able to smoothly beat some hilichurls and large monsters. I also watched some cutscenes, although the quality can only be set on the low or lowest mode. Call of Duty also runs smoothly, but only in medium graphic setting and frame rate. Mobile Legends can be played at high graphics with high refresh rate settings. Note that the phone gets a little warm playing a heavy game for too long.

ONEPLUS 11

OnePlus once dominated the smartphone market, offering an alternative to Apple and Samsung. It had great devices that rivaled the flagship smartphones with an outstanding OS and killer specifications, all at a reasonable price. In recent years they have fallen behind some of the competition, but it looks like they’re making a comeback with the new OnePlus 11!

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
140 April 2023
SMARTPHONE

DESIGN

The OnePlus 11 has a full glass body with an aluminum frame. The front is made with Corning’s strongest Gorilla Glass Victus, while the back has Gorilla Glass 5. The phone feels premium with its heft. In the looks department, the OnePlus 11 is almost a carbon copy of its predecessor, the OnePlus 10 Pro and 10T. The only difference is that the camera bump is now a circle instead of a box.

The phone is durable, withstanding even an accidental fall (sorry, OnePlus). The

phone slipped out of my grasp as I was taking pictures, landing face-first on the rubble floor. The phone remained mostly unscathed, with only the attached screen protector taking a beating.

The OnePlus 11 comes in two colors: Volcanic Black and Emerald Green. I liked the subtle green of our review unit, and the darker shade makes the phone look elegant and classy.

The display is a 6.7-inch QHD+ (3216 x 1440) SuperFluid AMOLED with LTPO. The display has a max refresh rate of 120Hz and is rated for up to 1000Hz

touch response. Also on the display are the earpiece and the 16-megapixel selfie camera.

On the back is the Quad-camera setup with Hasselblad Camera. On the left is the volume rocker, while on the right are the power button and alert slider. Finally, the sim card tray, the USB-C charging port, and the main speaker are at the bottom. I’m not fond of having the volume and power buttons on opposite edges because it took unnecessary screenshots each time I pulled the phone out of my pocket or when I just wanted to lock/unlock it.

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
141 April 2023

HARDWARE

Like all previous OnePlus flagships, the OnePlus 11 is equipped with the latest hardware. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with an Adreno 740 GPU. It has two RAM and memory configurations, 12GB+128GB and 16GB+256GB, both with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

Benchmark has pegged the OnePlus 11 as a beast. It scored 1011447 on Antutu V9.5, 1293 for single core and 4667 for multi-core in Geekbench 6, 3589 for Wild

Life Extreme, and 10375 for PCMark. This reflects in real-world use, particularly in running heavy games like Genshin Impact, where it was notched 40-54fps (based on its internal FPS counter) with settings all cranked up to the highest level. It’s also one of the few phones I found optimized for League of Legends: Wild Rift that is able to run its 120fps mode.

Performance is one thing, and battery life is another. Here I’m glad to report that the OnePlus 11 has one heck of a battery life. Running PCMark’s battery test gave it 13h 13 mins going from 100% to 20% with around 80-85% brightness, more

than enough to last a long day. If you do run out of battery, the included 100W GaN charger tops up the phone from 10% to 54% in just 15 minutes and is fully charged in 27 minutes. Unfortunately, the phone does not have wireless charging.

The most important highlight of the OnePlus 11 is its triple camera setup, with the main shooter being the 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 with an f/1.8 aperture. It has a 48-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and a 32-megapixel 2X telephoto. The camera system utilizes the thirdgeneration Hasselblad Camera Mobile that aids in color and software processing. Even night and low light shots were great. Needless to say, photos came out fantastic with near true-to-life output, and I enjoyed shooting even more with the Hasselblad filters on.

For video, the OnePlus 11 can shoot up to 8K at 24fps and 4K at 30/60 fps. OIS and EIS are available for all modes, but the much smoother Ultra Steady Pro mode is locked at 1080 30p.

There are other noteworthy hardware specs on the OnePlus 11, like the implementation of WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and a blazing-fast fingerprint reader. There were also massive compromises, like the fact that the USB port was reverted to USB 2.0.

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph OnePlus 11 142 April 2023

USER EXPERIENCE

The OnePlus 11 is a joy to use as a powerful machine with excellent battery life. OnePlus did a fantastic job on the phone’s cooling system, so it never runs hot, even under heavy load when benchmarking.

As a flagship smartphone, one of the most remarkable features of the OnePlus 11 is its display. It’s a 6.7-inch QHD+ (1440p) LTPO3 AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate. The phone’s brightness can go up to 1300nits, allowing for comfortable use even under direct sunlight. The display is highly customizable, with OnePlus allowing users to change resolution, color temp, and more. It also has Dolby Vision support for glorious Netflix binge sessions.

Speaking of binge-watching videos, the audio quality is also good. The speakers can get moderately loud enough to fill a room without the audio quality getting muddy or tinny.

As for other noteworthy features, haptics on the OnePlus 11 is excellent, making typing/ messaging on the phone feel gratifying. The return of the Alert Slider is also great for people who constantly need to attend meetings, and I found myself using it frequently during exam week. Then there are my minor gripes with the phone. The layout of the volume and power buttons gets annoying as you’re constantly taking accidental screenshots. It is not IP68-rated, so you can’t take this phone near the pool this summer. And finally, the lack of wireless charging was disappointing, especially since wireless charging has been standard for most flagships for quite a while now. Now do these take away from the value of the phone? To be honest, not at all.

VALUE

Coming in at PHP45,990 for the 12GB+128GB and PHP49,990 for the 16+256GB variant, the OnePlus 11 is priced considerably cheaper than most flagship smartphones. There are compromises, like the lack of wireless

charging and IP68 (it is only rated for IP64), as well as having to get used to some UI. Fortunately, the other specifications more than make up for its shortcomings.

DESIGN

The HONOR X8a looks similar to its predecessor, the HONOR X8, and resembles an iPhone save for the camera layout. It has a boxy shape and, while I’m not too keen on boxy phones, the light weight of the HONOR X8a allows it to be comfortably held for a long time.

The HONOR X8a comes in three color schemes: Cyan Blue, Titanium Silver, and our review unit’s Midnight Black. The phone is made mainly from plastic but looks good due to the matte finish, which helps keep away fingerprint smudges.

The HONOR X8a features the HONOR Edgeless display, a 6.7-inch IPS LCD with a 2388 x 1080 resolution, and bezels that are only 1.1mm thin. Also on the display is the 16-megapixel selfie camera. On the left is the sim card tray, and on the right are the volume rockers and power button that doubles as a side-mounted fingerprint reader. At the bottom are the USB Type-C port and the single downward-firing speaker.

3DMark Wild Life. PCMark 3.0 scored the device 7319 in performance. It isn’t the fastest processor out there, but still good enough for light to moderate gaming. Speaking of gaming, it was able to handle Genshin Impact at the lowest to low setting but expect frame drops. Esports titles like League of Legends: Wild Rift, on the other hand, run on super high setting with 60+fps.

The highlight of the HONOR X8a is its triple-camera setup, with the primary

shooter having 100-megapixel. The other two are a 5-megapixel ultrawide and a 2-megapixel macro. Regarding camera performance, the HONOR X8a does well for its class. It captures impressive daytime photos but struggles in dynamic range. That said, indoor shots taken with decent lighting are also good, but it is challenged in low-light situations. Night shots came out a bit too noisy for my liking. For video, it can shoot only up to 1080p and only 30fps. The front camera is a 16-megapixel shooter that takes acceptable selfies.

USER EXPERIENCE

The HONOR X8a is a surprisingly unique smartphone. Its performance with the G88 processor is a jump from the G35 of the HONOR X7a but is still not nearly as fast as the Snapdragon 695 of the HONOR X9a. Having tried the two other X-series smartphones, the X8a rightfully feels in between the two.

When I tried to put the phone through its paces, I was pleasantly surprised with its internal cooling. Despite subjecting the phone to benchmarks and heavy gaming, the phone never felt hot, not even concerningly warm.

Battery life is also decent with PCMark 3.0 rating; the 4500mAh is able to go 12h and 20 mins from 80% down to 20%. Recharging is not the fastest with the 22.5W charger.

If I were to name flaws, I would point to two. First, the speaker is single and downward firing. It can get loud, but the sound quality is not the best. Second is a personal preference against side-mounted fingerprint readers. While there are fans for this configuration, I just find it difficult to work with. I prefer having it rearmounted or just under-display. The lack of a microSD slot for a camera-centric smartphone is also a bit weird but does not really take away from the device’s performance.

VALUE

Coming in at PHP 10,990, the HONOR X8a is a surprisingly great value phone. Its 100-megapixel camera and capable processor make it worth consideration. If you’re looking for a great camera-centric budget phone, the HONOR X8a might be the phone for you.

Many new graduates are bound to spend the first few years of their professional journey with a typical commuter’s life–early mornings, lining up for tricycles, cramming themselves into buses, hanging onto jeepneys for dear life, or spending a good chunk of money on ride-hailing services. While buying a brandnew car can help alleviate these pains, buying one fresh off the dealership, whether in cash or via financing, is not a sound option for many fresh graduates earning entrylevel salaries.

Luckily, purchasing a second-hand car via a loan is a much more viable and realistic option for newly employed workers wanting their own ride while staying financially responsible. But with so many things to consider, it can be an intimidating experience. Below are some practical tips on how you can go from dreamer to driver without breaking the bank.

NEW JOB , NEW CAR

How to buy a car while staying financially-responsible

149 April 2023

Figure out your budget

The first step to being financially responsible is knowing just how much car you can afford without compromising your overall quality of life too much. After all, you still need to consider rent, groceries, utilities, and other living costs. A good rule of thumb is that you save up to be able to pay at least 30% of the unit’s cost out of pocket, with your monthly loan payments not exceeding 30% of your monthly take-home pay. Of course, saving up to pay a larger downpayment would be better so you can minimize your mortgage payments.

Another thing to consider is the running costs of owning a car. You have to factor in other expenses, including fuel, maintenance costs, insurance, and registration fees.

Scour the market for options

Now that you have your budget, it’s time to start canvassing for your ride. Do you want a roomy SUV? How about a fuel-efficient sedan? A sporty hatchback? Whatever vehicle you want for your lifestyle, there’s bound to be a used unit ready for sale in an online listing somewhere. You may also consider going to a dedicated second-hand dealer.

The good thing about used vehicles is that someone else already took the hit of its depreciating value, meaning they will be much more affordable. While units dated 2010 and older will generally be cheaper, it would be better to get a pre-loved vehicle from 2015 and onwards to ensure it still has many reliable years ahead. Newer cars also tend to be more fuel efficient than older ones, meaning you can save more on your monthly fuel costs.

Additionally, you want to get a used car with as little mileage as possible. The average driving distance lies between 10,00015,000 kilometers per year. You’d want a car whose major components such as the engine, suspension, and brakes have not been abused beyond reason, so make sure to check that odometer.

Inspect the vehicles you have your eyes on

Talk to the vehicle’s owner and schedule a visit so that you can inspect the vehicle inside and out, and take it for a test drive to see how it feels on the road. On top of asking the owner about the car’s history, you should also consider bringing along a trusted mechanic or an enthusiast friend who can give you an objective review of the car’s current condition. Are there repaired dents that indicate a crash? Is the suspension system still good? Have the engine parts been replaced? Has the car been flooded?

Bringing along someone knowledgeable will ensure that you are aware of any issues beforehand that can help you negotiate the unit’s price, as well as help you anticipate preventive maintenance expenses in the future. You don’t want to end up with a trojan horse that will cost you more in repairs than what you actually paid for it.

Get a loan

Once you have your heart set and your downpayment ready, make your way over to your nearest financial institution to process your loan. M Lhuillier has over 3,000 branches nationwide providing Quick Cash Loan services for various purposes–including buying a used car–ensuring that you

can get your vehicle as smoothly as possible. With some of the highest appraisal rates and lowest interest rates in the industry, you’ll be sure to get a mortgage arrangement that won’t have you living out of your newly-bought car.

M Lhuillier’s Quick Car Loan offer is valid for used cars from popular brands such as Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Ford, Suzuki, and Nissan, as long as the year model does not exceed 10 years upon maturity of the loan. You can borrow up to 70% of the car’s appraised value and conveniently pay it back over a maximum of 36 months using the ML Wallet app or over-the-counter at any M Lhuillier branch.

say goodbye to your commuting woes and cruise to the office or wherever you need to go in style.

Thanks to services such as M Lhuillier’s Quick Car Loan, you can make that car ownership dream a reality without putting yourself in financial jeopardy. After all, what use is having a car if all your cash is tied up in hefty monthly payments? With M Lhuillier’s Quick Car Loan, you get to enjoy reasonable mortgage rates; high-quality customer service before, during, and after your loan period; and convenient payment options.

What are you waiting for? Visit your nearest M Lhuillier branch and get financing for your dream car now with their tough-to-match appraisal rates and super quick processing and approval times! Better still, M Lhuillier also provides clients with freebies such as GPS installation to make your car ownership even more stress-free.

Owning a car as a new graduate? Puwede with M Lhuillier!

Better yet, you don’t have to drown in bureaucracy to apply for an M Lhuillier Quick Car Loan. All it takes is three steps: (1) send your application form and photocopy of the car’s OR/CR to your nearest M Lhuillier branch; (2) wait for the approval; and (3) get your cash if approved. This makes the M Lhuillier Quick Car Loan a great hassle-free option for not just new graduates looking to get their first car, but anyone looking to go the economical route of buying a used vehicle.

Be financially responsible

Lastly, it’s important to be financially responsible for your new ride. Be sure to pay your monthly dues on time and in full; otherwise, you may have a hard time securing new loans in the future. Worse, you may get your car repossessed.

Being financially responsible also entails setting aside some amount for your car’s maintenance. Doing regular oil changes, tire rotations, and other regular maintenance tasks can keep your car running well and prevent major repairs down the road.

In conclusion, buying a car as a new graduate in the Philippines can be an intimidating but highly doable prospect if you know what to expect. With careful planning, you can

NISSAN X-IN-1

A new approach to electrified powertrain development

Nissan unveiled its new approach to electrified powertrain development, which it calls “X-in-1”. Under the approach, core EV and e-POWER powertrain components will be shared and modularized, resulting in a 30% reduction, compared to 2019, in development and manufacturing costs by 2026.

Through the X-in-1 approach, Nissan aims to further increase the competitiveness of its EV and e-POWER vehicles. Nissan has developed a 3-in-1 powertrain prototype, which modularizes the motor, inverter, and reducer, which is planned for use in EVs. A 5-in-1 prototype, which additionally modularizes the generator and increaser, is planned for use in e-POWER vehicles.

The X-in-1 approach, which covers 3-in-1, 5-in-1, and other possible variants, has been developed to enable EV and e-POWER core components to be produced on the same line.

In 2010, Nissan became the first automaker to mass-market an EV, the Nissan LEAF. To continuously enhance its electrification technologies, Nissan has been carefully listening to its EV customers around the world. In 2016,

Nissan launched its unique e-POWER electrified powertrain, utilizing its EV technology, which provides the same driving pleasure as an EV as it is 100% motor drive.

The X-in-1 approach to electrified powertrain development provides the following benefits:

• Sharing and modularizing core components improves production efficiencies and reduces powertrain costs by approximately 30% compared to 2019. Nissan aims to achieve e-POWER price parity with ICE vehicles by around 2026.

• Size and weight reduction of the unit improves vehicle driving performance and minimizes noise and vibration.

• Adopt newly developed motor that reduces the use of heavy rare earth elements to 1% or less of magnet weight.

• The sharing of core components and control technology provides the enjoyable driving experience unique to Nissan EVs.

Senior vice president Toshihiro Hirai, who leads powertrain & EV engineering development, said: “We make the most of our expertise and know-how from our more thana-decade long development and production of electrified technologies. Through our innovations in electrified powertrain development, we’ll continue to create new value for customers and deliver 100% motordriven vehicles – EVs and e-POWER – as widely as possible.”

Under its long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030, the company aims to bolster its lineup with 27 new electrified models, including 19 EVs, by fiscal year 2030. Nissan aims to bring the unique value of its electrified vehicles to the broadest range of customers by introducing the most suitable models to each market at the appropriate time.

FREEDIVING FOR FIRST TIMERS

Active Lifestyle
gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 162 April 2023

Freediving is one of the coolest things you can do, both as a personal accomplishment and for the ‘gram. I’m sure you have that friend who’s seemingly always on a beach trip with the most awe-inducing shots swimming between coral reefs, inside fish schools, and along shipwrecks. And there you are, always tethered to your life vest and limited to the comparatively dull experience above the water.

Learning to freedive will enable and empower you to likewise get up close and personal with vibrant marine life, all the while learning how to care more about the ocean and learning a thing or two about yourself in the process.

I tried freediving a few months ago as a nonswimmer, and I came out of it alive and with a life skill unlocked. Here are some tips for aspiring merpeople looking to learn freediving during these dry and humid months.

WHAT IS FREEDIVING?

Freediving is essentially exploring the underwater world in one breath. Unlike scuba diving, where you go underwater with a bulky air tank, scuba suit, full face mask, and other equipment (like an astronaut!), freediving only requires you, your swimwear, mask, snorkel, and fins. Heck, you can even do it without the last two or three items.

Although scuba diving allows you to stay underwater deeper and for longer periods, it is generally more expensive due to the certifications required and the cost of owning or renting the necessary equipment. In contrast, freediving is much more straightforward. It’s just you, the water, and your one full breath.

Freediving is as much a mental as it is a physical activity. More than the challenge of holding your breath, you must also learn how to relax in a very stressful situation and suppress your fears about the open water and drowning. Luckily, you can learn these two aspects and other fundamental freediving skills quite quickly. All you need is to find a reputable freediving coach or school. With a number of either available online within and around Metro Manila, you’re pretty spoiled for choice.

163 April 2023

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR YOUR FIRST TIME?

As mentioned above, you only need to bring yourself and your swimwear. Most freediving coaches and schools already include the dive mask, snorkel, and fins as part of their rates. However, if you are particular about using equipment that have been used by others before, then you may also consider investing in your own freediving gear.

As for your swimwear, while you can get by with just minimal coverage, I recommend wearing longsleeved rashguards and swim leggings. Covering yourself up offers various benefits, including being slightly warmer, less prone to extreme sunburn, and being protected from the stings of jellyfish and fire corals.

Lastly, don’t forget to bring any medications you might need, including antihistamines, anti-emetics, painkillers, etc.

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST FREEDIVING EXPERIENCE? WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

My first freediving experience was in a dive pool somewhere in San Juan, Metro Manila, and it was a shocker. I am sharing some tips I wish I had known back then so you can come prepared and know exactly what you’ll be in for.

• Get plenty of sleep the night before. You need your body well rested as you’ll be subjecting it to new challenges it has not been through before — mouth breathing through a snorkel, breath holding, underwater pressures, treading water, and so on. Being battered by waves for a few hours on end will also test your endurance. Relatedly, don’t go into your first freedive session with a hangover.

• Make sure that you are not suffering from nor immediately recovering from any sicknesses, most especially colds. Having congested sinuses

will spoil your experience as you cannot equalize the pressure in your ears, leading to pain. If you choose to push through, there’s a chance you’ll have a nosebleed underwater. I’m not a doctor, but I know blood’s supposed to be in your body and not in your dive mask. If you feel persistent head, nose, eye, or ear pain that won’t go away, STOP and tell your dive coach.

• You may also experience seasickness while floating alongside your buoy, as well as dizziness when you become disoriented while upside down underwater. I find it helpful to take an anti-emetic at least an hour before the dive proper. After all, you don’t want to ruin your dive companions’ day by heaving your last meal into the water. If you feel too dizzy, STOP and tell your dive coach.

• Bring candies with you, preferably not those in a sachet but in a big reusable bag so you won’t accidentally lose your litter in the water. This also helps to ensure you have a quick boost of sugar to power you through your last few dives.

• The deeper you go, the more pressure the water exerts on your ears, leading to pain. You need to equalize the pressure lest the pain becomes too much and your eardrums rupture underwater. Good thing you can learn to equalize even before you begin diving! Pinch your nose and gently blow through the blockage; you should feel your ears pop. This move is called the Valsalva maneuver. Practice this over and over again until it becomes second nature. In the water, equalize once for every meter you dive.

• Learn to be comfortable with holding your breath. You may feel that you last only half a minute, but that’s just your body not being used to oxygen deprivation and trying to force you to breathe. However, the reality is you still have a good chunk of time left. If you can hold your breath for upwards of a minute or two, you’ll be able to last longer underwater.

• Duck diving can be tricky. You want to get underwater, but for some reason, you’re always floating back up no matter how hard you struggle and stroke. In these cases, try swimming forward first before you begin the dive down. The momentum should help propel you underwater.

Active Lifestyle gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 164 April 2023

SOME TERMS!

• One full breath: getting in as much oxygen as possible before you dive down, ideally filling in your belly first and then your lungs before holding your breath.

• Equalization: Balancing the pressure in your body with the pressure of the water around you.

• Buoy: A floating marker for your dive site’s location, as well as something to hold on to for rest when you’re tired of treading water.

• Duck dive: A technique for going underwater quickly. This involves floating face first in the water and then, in one smooth, quick motion, (1) bending 90 degrees at your hips so the top of your head is pointing to the dive floor, (2) pulling downwards with an arm stroke, and (3) kicking the legs vertically out of the water.

• Recovery breath: Expelling built up carbon dioxide from your system while replenishing your oxygen levels.

As I said, freediving is both a physical and mental experience. Once you’ve refined your technique, you’re guaranteed to have a mesmerizing and meditative experience under the water. It’s a truly great way of connecting with nature and pushing the boundaries you’ve set for yourself.

Gaming

Words by Jose Alvarez

DEVELOPER

PLATFORM(S)

Team Ninja Koei Tecmo PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

PUBLISHER

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 166 April 2023

Games are very educational, if you think about it. Some games are based off of real-life events and the developer’s interpretation of such events. Team Ninja, who has made fighting game classics such as the Dead or Alive series and action-adventure fare such as Ninja Gaiden, caught my attention for blending historical events (with a twist) and an action RPG that had me dodging, parrying, and attacking my way to victory—and learning a little bit more about Chinese history as I went along.

For hardcore history buffs such as myself, I found Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty to take a unique interpretation of an interesting time in history: the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history. While rarely discussed in schools, the Three Kingdoms flourished around the same time as the Roman Empire and was characterized by war, and, subsequently, advances in technology. You play as a nameless warrior who is swept into the conflict, with each warring kingdom pursuing an elixir of immortality. You team up with a historically significant warrior in action that reminded me of classic 1990s side-scroller fare: fight enemies, fight a boss battle, and move on to the next level.

167 April 2023

While that is an oversimplification of what is actually going on, the real learning curve comes with the combat. We’ve seen many games take the route of complex combat in recent years (think Elden Ring), and Wo Long is no exception. It is more reactive than anything: you have to time deflections and find openings to start your offensive. For those who are a little reckless in combat, this might be something new to learn. As long as you have Spirit, you can indefinitely block regular attacks. However, Spirit is also used for special abilities, spells, and Spirit attacks, meaning you have to balance both offense and defense. Spirit attacks can be used to clear out a powerful enemy or groups of enemies, so use it wisely.

The number of weapons you can use is staggering. You can use bows, crossbows, repeating crossbows, hammers, sabers, dual halberds, dual sabers, dual swords, glaives, halberds, poleaxes, slashing spears, spears, staves, straight sabers, and swords. I ended up trying to balance

melee and ranged attacks, but the straight sabers and repeating crossbow won out for me in the end as they balanced power and speed. If you like getting up close and personal, I would suggest using hammers or glaives as they can clear multiple enemies quickly.

In every level, you have Morale Ranks, which go up to rank 25. To reach max rank is straightforward—defeat enemies and you gain morale. Enemies also have morale as well. How you defeat those enemies will determine how you gain that morale. Spirit attacks, special abilities, and spells will increase your morale faster. There is also a conundrum with loot. Where things get complicated is with Wo Long’s loot system—you’ll need to have a gear set ready for every situation. What makes things worse is that you can’t sort by sets or special effects, which is more than a minor annoyance. This is something that makes the game less fun, and requires you to have the time and patience to sort out what you want to use on specific enemies or bosses.

Gaming
gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 168 April 2023

Wo Long is broken up into main missions and side missions that are rather large. Side missions can have you visiting the same level from another perspective. Is a level too hard? You can exit from a mission using a battle flag and save your progress. Enemy variety is rather limited relative to the complexity of combat, which can make Wo Long seem more like a grind fest. This is thankfully offset by the complexity of the levels that you’re playing in.

Many have compared Wo Long to a soulslike game, but it falls just short of the mark. While the combat definitely excels, the game can get rather stale quickly unless you’re challenging yourself to play with all the weapons at your disposal. However, if you want to experience the Three Kingdoms Era with a bit of a creative twist or enjoy Team Ninja games, Wo Long is a good game to keep you occupied.

HOW MESSAGING APPS WILL DRIVE MARKETING IN 2023

The first message that was sent via the precursor of the modern internet in 1969, was ‘LO’. It was American student Charley Kilne’s unsuccessful attempt to transmit “login” to a computer. Since then instant messaging has evolved significantly and messaging services have become increasingly popular as a way for people to connect. Recent studies show that we spend on average 2.5 hours on messaging apps daily. The same studies also found that the younger generation, 16-24-year-olds, spends nearly 3 hours on messaging apps every day.

Customer service, shopping, entertainment, and even payments are now being made through messaging apps. And there are no signs of slowing down as messaging apps bring more opportunities to use rich media and enhance customer experience every day. More and more people are turning to messengers to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. Subsequently, messaging is already a significant driving force in brand communication as marketers connect with customers where customers are.

There are many reasons for the traction of messaging apps. To name a few:

• The convenience of having a conversation anywhere and at any time.

• The ability to send multimedia messages, such as videos, images, and different types of files that can be more engaging and informative than text.

• Being less intrusive and giving the option to communicate via calls or messages.

Today, businesses adjust how they engage with consumers and switch from a distant, corporate communication style to a more personalized, friendly one. For example, 77% of businesses that started messaging clients during the pandemic plan to continue doing so. Modern-day customers respond much better to simple, genuine conversations from business accounts in messaging apps. These trends mean that this year adding messaging apps to the marketing toolkit has become a necessity for businesses—not just a discussion for some time in the future.

gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 174 April 2023 Apps
Words by Limor Bailey, partnership account director at Rakuten Viber

HERE ARE A FEW MARKETING TRENDS TO WATCH IN MESSAGING APPS IN 2023:

More personalized messaging: As messaging becomes increasingly popular, and brands are increasingly adopting first-party data strategy, we’ll see more customization with content explicitly designed for customers or audience segments according to their interests and preferences. Connecting a CDP or a CRM for personalization is a norm in 2023, and allows taking your campaign performance to the next level.

Greater (and more creative) use of rich media content: Rich media, like videos and images, will continue to be used in messaging as they offer a highly engaging experience for users. At the same time, you can create a coherent vision of you as a brand by using advanced features that messaging apps have to offer. Create a customized chatbot, use AR technologies, games, and other content with recognizable design elements that support your brand voice and image. These features allow you to immerse your audience into the atmosphere you’d like to create, thus prolonging and enhancing their involvement with your content.

Increased use of chatbots: With a major recent breakthrough in chatbot technology, chatbots will become much more commonplace in apps as businesses look for ways to automate their marketing and customer support. Based on Viber’s internal data, last year there were 12 billion messages exchanged in chatbots on the app globally, showcasing the popularity of automated conversations. So it is best to start now and be on the frontline of the new approach.

AI takes the wheel: AI will play a more prominent role in messaging apps as businesses look to use it for personalization and understanding user behavior. Chatbots already use machine learning elements and develop in understanding more complex human language. We are still in the very early stages of the technology adoption and will continue seeing more use cases frequently throughout 2023.

Laser focus on customer service: Consumers expect immediate interaction, and businesses continue improving how they communicate with buyers. Providing excellent customer service through messaging apps is becoming increasingly popular. Brands will need to learn to resolve issues faster and with a higher success rate, always be a step ahead of their clients’ needs and desires, and be ready to engage in real-time conversations.

We have seen true growth among messaging platforms in the last decade. Some major companies quickly caught up to this shift in user behavior, and today it’s absolutely common to talk to brands through the means previously reserved for personal communication. 2023 will certainly bring more businesses to the messaging apps and will see further evolution of brand-user communication.

Leveraging AI to Manage Global Supply Chain Disruptions

As the Philippines continue to experience high inflation, recording 8.6% in February 2023, Filipinos are expected to adjust their budgets and prioritize essential goods and services. While this poses an opportunity for grocery retailers to increase sales, the ongoing global supply chain disruptions have also made it difficult to keep inventory high and prices low.

According to the World Economic Forum, the invasion of Ukraine is a primary cause of much of the energy

and food price inflation in many countries and is fueling a global food crisis. Extreme weather also continues to disrupt the global supply chain by impacting major shipping routes and crop yields. In the Philippines, storms in the 2021-22 crop year caused sugar shortages, resulting in skyrocketing price increases from PHP54.5 to PHP89.5 per kilo for refined sugar.

As inflation is expected to remain high in 2023, economists anticipate a recession in major economies, which will certainly affect the developing world. It is also

likely this will have a significant impact on grocery retailers. Fortunately, machine learning and AI (artificial intelligence) technology, like the technology used by global supply chain leader RELEX Solutions, is able to provide insights to diminish disruptions to business operations.

Automated demand forecasting reduces operational costs

Amid rising costs of goods and services, Filipinos are becoming more price sensitive, seeking sales and markdowns

Enterprise gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 180 April 2023

and assessing which shops or channels offer the most competitive prices. Following recent gas price hikes, many online delivery platforms increased their fees resulting in changes to customer shopping patterns, who are now opting for in-store shopping. With more foot traffic expected in groceries and supermarkets, keeping a high inventory at a low price becomes essential.

In order to adapt quickly to these and other changes, retailers should leverage automation and artificial intelligencedriven insights to cut down operational costs and lower the cost of goods and services. AI helps predict the impact of demand drivers such as promotions, prices, product displays, and weather data to accurately forecast demand and optimize replenishment. For retail operations, this means that they can better allocate their manpower and avoid losses.

AI allows more efficient inventory management for omnichannel

While retailers are expected to have an increase in foot traffic, online channels will continue to be prevalent due to the convenience and savings they offer

through digital promotions. According to a report by Meta and Bain & Company, the Filipino digital consumer population is the second largest in Southeast Asia at 69 million and is expected to continue growing its gross merchandise value by 20% by 2027.

With the increased demand for omnichannel, retailers should focus on removing silos within their e-commerce and brick-and-mortar businesses and start managing both as a single, unified business. This transformation is a laborious task that requires accurate, real-time reporting to adequately manage customer expectations, making it essential for retail brands to integrate solutions powered by AI. The right tools ensure fulfillment of online orders from stores, customer backorders, and online orders are correctly accounted for in forecasting and inventory planning, even as products are redirected from one fulfillment center to another.

AI enables a better customer experience

When retailers are out of stock, they’re losing sales and possibly customers. The efficiency of a retailer’s replenishment

operation is critical to maintaining customer satisfaction and business profitability. However, a recent study by RELEX Solutions found that close to 50% of retailers don’t know how much stock they have in each store, revealing a gap in the strategic approach to accurate and effective store ordering among these companies.

To stay on the consumers’ radar, retailers need to prioritize efficient replenishment systems that address customer needs without burdening resources. With consumers being able to shop anytime and anywhere, AI and machine learning technology help brands keep the right amount of inventory, forecast changes in demand, and adjust replenishment orders, driving improvements to service, sales, and customer satisfaction.

“The evolution of artificial intelligence in retail is very timely due to the need for businesses to save up money as current economic conditions push customers and partners to minimize expenses,” said Kristie Davison, vice president for APAC at RELEX Solutions. “AI helps retailers eliminate excess costs and manage their cash flow for better business sustainability.”

SECURITY ROADMAP

Introduces new payment security requirements to help keep consumers and businesses safe

Visa, a world leader in digital payments, announced a series of new payment security measures in the Philippines that will help to fight cybercrime, protect the payments ecosystem, and keep consumers and businesses safe.

The new security measures are part of Visa’s updated Security Roadmap for the Philippines, which is designed to provide enhanced protection for transactions made online and at physical retailers.

Jeff Navarro, Visa’s country manager for the Philippines and Guam, said: “At Visa, security is our highest priority and we invest heavily to preserve and enhance the security of every Visa transaction to ensure consumers and businesses are protected. As the payments landscape evolves, so do the threats, and that’s why I’m pleased to introduce our updated Security Roadmap which sets out the steps we will be taking in collaboration with our partners to continue to secure the payments ecosystem in the Philippines.”

Visa continually evolves to deliver data-based, securityfocused solutions that reduce fraud and protect the payments ecosystem. Over the last five years, the company has invested USD9-billion globally to boost cybersecurity and combat fraud.

One of its solutions — Visa Advanced Authorization — analyzes more than 500 data elements to generate a risk score for each transaction, a move that has helped banks prevent an estimated USD26-billion in fraud globally in the fiscal year 2021.

With Southeast Asian consumers living increasingly digital lifestyles, the use of biometrics — fingerprint or facial recognition, and digital identities — a digital representation of your identity information that you can use to prove who you are online, is growing in popularity.

Data from Visa’s latest Consumer Payment Attitudes Study conducted in August to September 2021, showed that among Filipino consumers who were surveyed, there is high awareness of biometric payment authentication at 80%, with more than half (60%) believing it is a safer way to pay. While current ownership of digital identities in the Philippines is low (11%), about one-third are familiar with

the concept (35%) and interest among non-owners (70%) is relatively high.

“When looking to the future of security, Visa believes that focusing on digital identities and the authentication of a consumer’s identity will be key to mitigating new threats as more commerce shifts to digital channels. Visa calls the industry to action on Digital Identity and its use for authentication,” added Navarro.

With a global team of over 1000 cybersecurity specialists, Visa provides 24/7, real-time fraud detection and mitigation, analyzing millions of transactions every day for known and emerging threats. Visa’s artificial Intelligence (AI) powered technology is able to spot patterns in data otherwise undetectable by humans to identify enumeration patterns and alert affected financial institutions and merchants before fraudulent transactions begin.

Visa’s Security Roadmap outlines the steps Visa will be taking across key areas to continue to secure the payments ecosystem in the Philippines, including:

THE FUTURE OF RECRUITMENT

46%

Despite a possible economic slowdown, 2023 remains to be a jobseekers’ market in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, according to SEEK, the parent company of Asia’s leading online employment marketplaces JobStreet and JobsDB. This is backed by findings from a new study, titled “What Job Seekers Wish Employers Knew: Unlocking the Future of Recruitment,” released by SEEK, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and The Network, a global alliance of recruitment websites which SEEK’s JobStreet and JobsDB are a part of.

The study — which surveyed 97,324 respondents in the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand — found that 34% of the talent surveyed are actively looking for a new job. In the Philippines, 40% of the respondents said they are not actively looking for a new job but are open to good offers including higher salary and upward career progress. Meanwhile, 33% of Filipino jobseekers are actively searching and are motivated by finding a role with higher seniority or trying out a new profession.

Talent feel confident to look out for new opportunities despite fears of recession as the majority surveyed are aware of their attractiveness to employers. In fact, the study found that 74% of talent around the region are approached multiple times per year about new job opportunities — and 36% of those are approached every month. Relatively, 87% of Filipinos receive multiple job offers per year, and 29% of those are approached every month.

185 April 2023
of Filipino employees prefer a hybrid work arrangement; 28% want family remote

In addition, Filipinos are more optimistic about judging their position in the labor market—78% feel positive and confident about negotiating positions, particularly in the areas of business, finance, and sales. This figure is slightly higher than the global average of 68%.

SEEK Asia chief executive officer Peter Bithos commented on the findings, “When faced with a possible recession, the balance of power in the labor market tends to shift towards employers as hiring tightens. However, we believe the situation is different this time as many organizations in Asia are still recovering from the jobs lost during the pandemic. While hiring growth may slow down during times of uncertainty, there is no doubt that it is still a jobseekers’ market right now, and so it’s important for employers to know how to attract, recruit and retain talent.”

The survey also reveals that those working in IT roles are the most coveted talent across Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore, as they are frequently approached with job opportunities on a weekly and monthly basis.

“Despite the waves of layoffs by tech companies in the region and around the world, the demand for tech talent still remains based on the report’s findings. This is consistent with SEEK’s observation of a 29% YoY (2021 vs 2022) increase in job ads for tech roles in the region, based on data from our JobStreet and JobsDB platforms,” added Bithos.

Talent’s Top Priorities

Most respondents (71%) to the survey in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong said that they desire, above all, a stable job with a good worklife balance. This preference is dominant across job roles, countries, and age groups. However, the survey revealed that Filipino talent are slightly more interested in taking leadership positions and in building their own successful businesses one day.

This is in line with Filipino jobseekers’ deal breakers when looking for a new role, with 28% citing work-life balance as a deal breaker, ranking second after financial compensation (35%). They also consider retirement and

Ideal Hiring Journey

The survey also debunked and proved several recruitment myths and gave insight into what Filipino jobseekers want in their recruitment journey.

For instance, a smooth and timely process is the number one way for an employer to stand out during recruitment, as mentioned by 77% of respondents. Moreover, 52% of respondents named “negative experience during recruitment” as the key reason they would refuse an otherwise attractive job offer.

Indicating a salary range (53%) is the number one feature that matters to Filipino jobseekers in a good job ad, and if included, this is the first piece of information candidates will look at.

insurance benefits that come along with the job offer (27%).

When it comes to the desired working conditions, Filipinos are more interested in having a hybrid setup (46%), followed by fully remote (28%). When it comes to working time, Filipino talent are in line with global results, preferring a traditional five-day workweek.

Bithos says, “These last few years have been a wakeup call to many. Today, we are knee-deep in the era of ‘The Great Reconfiguration’ as employees are reconfiguring their work and personal lives, prioritizing the latter with greater demand for worklife balance and flexibility. Meanwhile, employers are increasingly looking for different skills, with a continued focus on digital and technology skills. Employers that want to attract great talent with the skills that their businesses require must cater to these changing needs.”

The survey also revealed that a recommendation by a friend is the best way to raise interest when a Filipino talent is not looking for a job. But once they are interested, most people will look for further information through social media and company websites. And when it comes to applying for a job, people either apply through their personal networks or use recruitment platforms.

JobStreet Philippines country manager Philip Gioca emphasized that talent is in demand and jobseekers know it. “More companies have started opening a lot of opportunities and more Filipino jobseekers have built their confidence in seeking jobs and negotiating positions that really fit their needs. Candidates will have the tendency to be more selective and this is a good challenge for hirers to improve their recruitment process.”

The report also provided recommendations for employers, including how to overcome their biases to increase their talent pool, calibrate their approach to different personas, get culture fundamentals right, and more.

and make history with first-ever

LEO satellite to mobile connectivity trial in PH

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has made history by becoming the first company in the country to test Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity for Short Messaging Service (SMS) and emergency alerts in partnership with global firm Lynk Global.

During the field trial, which took place in Bataan from February 16 to 20, 2023, standard mobile

phones connected directly to Lynk’s LEO satellites and successfully sent and received text messages. The satellite was also able to broadcast an emergency message to the phones registered to the Lynk network.

This breakthrough technology is expected to augment Globe’s existing terrestrial networks and provide cellular connectivity to more Filipinos in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

In April, Lynk is launching its global commercial service providing periodic SMS services and cellular broadcast emergency alerts that are roaming-like from a network and user perspective. Over time, Lynk’s service will become seamless and add more services, such as app-based messaging, voice, and data.

“Globe is exploring new satellite technology solutions to reach more people, especially in far-flung areas that do not have any terrestrial network coverage. There are still places within the archipelago where people can benefit from additional mobile coverage,” said Gerhard Tan, director and head of network strategy and technology enablement at Globe.

“At Lynk, we believe that people should be able to use their mobile phones to communicate no matter their location and no matter how remote. Our network of satellites that work as cell towers in space paves the way for Globe to enhance their mobile coverage of the Philippines,” added James Alderdice, VP-AsiaPacific at Lynk.

The two companies signed an agreement last year for Globe to experience the innovative aspect of the service, specifically the ability for standard unmodified phones to communicate with an LEO satellite in orbit acting as a mobile base station.

“Low Earth Orbit Satellites will dominate the space industry. It will create a strong wave of opportunity to connect the unconnected. This satellite technology will revolutionize basic cellular service and the internet in the country, enabling a digitally-connected Philippines,” Tan said.

Lynk has been working on the technology and satellite service for over five years and has launched several LEO satellites with direct-tomobile phone service to offer mobile operators and their subscribers additional coverage for cellular connectivity.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Inviting budding engineers to tackle the problems our planet faces

The James Dyson Award, an annual engineering competition with a sustainability-focus run by Dyson’s charity, is now open and accepting submissions from young inventors who have ideas to improve our planet.

Since 2005, the Award has challenged entrepreneurial undergraduates and recent graduates of engineering to tackle a global problem, from environmental issues to improving healthcare practices. Past winners have developed solutions to advance plastic recycling (Plastic Scanner) and the biodegradability of materials (MarinaTex, AuREUS), as well as bettering at-home medical diagnostics (Blue Box, HOPES).

Innovation gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 194 April 2023
April 2023

To date, the competition has awarded 390 inventions with prize money, and over 70% of past global winners are commercializing their winning inventions. We need more gamechanging ideas to tackle global environmental and medical problems, and James Dyson thinks young people have the answers and drive to make a difference.

Sir James Dyson, founder, said: “We are looking for young engineers who are hard-wired to solve problems sustainably, often using less energy and fewer materials, and who want to improve the world through their ideas. Young people have the ideas that can change things for the better, and they should be encouraged. The James Dyson Award gives them the platform to pursue their inventions, and I look forward to judging this year’s entries. Good luck!”

Sir James Dyson chooses the competition’s global winners; they receive vital funding and high-profile recognition – key first steps to take

their ideas into real life practical application.

What can winners expect?

1. Prize money. Global winners receive Php2M and National winners receive Php330k to put towards the next phase of their invention’s development.

2. Media attention. Previous winners have highlighted the awareness brought by the Award as one of the most valuable contributions to getting their ideas off the ground.

3. Past winner support. Last year the Award launched a network for past winners commercialising their inventions; events and networking opportunities for winners to connect, share experiences and consider inter-winner mentorship.

Each participating country and region will award a National winner (Php330k) and two National runnersup. The National winners are chosen by an external panel in collaboration with Dyson. Last year, the Award

opened for the first time in Thailand and Turkey, and this year the competition launches in Portugal.

Those that win a National accolade proceed to the International shortlist and awarding stages, where James Dyson selects his global winners.

What makes a good entry?

The best inventions solve a real-world problem that impacts our planet. They provide clear and intelligent solutions.

One successful past winner in the Philippines was the first ever Global Sustainability Award winner in 2020 – AuREUS System Technology, invented by then 27-year-old Filipino Carvey Ehren. The window panels of AuREUS use technology synthesized from upcycled crop waste to absorb stray UV light from sunlight, and convert it to clean renewable energy. Unlike traditional solar panels, which only work in clear conditions and rely on visible light, the AuREUS panels are

Innovation gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 196 April 2023

able to harvest power from invisible UV rays that pass through clouds. Through the upcycling of crops that would otherwise be considered waste, AuREUS champions better access to solar energy for climate change mitigation, and supports the local agriculture industry when hit by calamities.

Success stories

Winning the James Dyson Award can provide awareness that helps to propel problem-solving ideas to commercialization. For example, mOm Incubators, 2014’s International Winner, have recently supplied more than 60 of its incubators to Ukraine and 2 other countries including the UK. Overall, the company believes it has impacted the lives of more than 1,000 babies and, as they put it, “We would not have reached this position without the James Dyson Award.”

John Tay, inventor of Rehabit, was the 2022 Singapore National Winner. Inspired by the struggles that his father faced due to the lack of proper at-home

rehabilitation tools for stroke sufferers, he created a set of four tools focused on upper-limb rehabilitation. The tools allow patients to perform exercises correctly and safely. Today, Rehabit is already in use at multiple therapy centers, and John is now working on expanding the range of products for stroke patients to relearn, regain and recover. “Since the award, several therapists have approached me for collaboration opportunities. This has really been an amazing exposure for Rehabit,” says John.

Dan Watson, inventor of SafetyNet Technologies, was 2012’s International

winner. SafetyNet is a light that fits onto fishing gear to combat unwanted fish and marine creatures trapped in commercial fishing nets. He founded his company SafetyNet Technologies after winning the Award, delivering pioneering technology and support to build a better, sustainable fishing industry. Alongside high-quality LED lights, SafetyNet Technologies also provide underwater video cameras and ocean sensors to support the fishing industry. “SafetyNet is global now, we work all over the world. We’re starting to lead in the fishing industry,” says Dan.

In 2016, US National runner-up SoaPen, a colorful soap pen for children encouraging safe handwashing, commercialized their invention and were featured on Shark Tank. SoaPen has shipped over 60,000 units of SoaPen across America and are expanding their product portfolio with new SoaPen colors and a body wash pen.

Head to https://www. jamesdysonaward.org/en-ph to find out more and apply. Submission of entries is open until July 19, 2023.

Cybersecurity Readiness Index

New Cisco study finds that only 27% of companies surveyed in the Philippines are ready to defend against cybersecurity threats

Only 27% of organizations in the Philippines have the ‘Mature’ level of readiness needed to be resilient against today’s modern cybersecurity risks, according to Cisco’s first-ever Cybersecurity Readiness Index released in March 2023. The index was developed against the backdrop of a post-COVID, hybrid world, where users and data must be secured wherever work gets done. The report highlights where businesses are doing well and where cybersecurity readiness gaps will widen if global business and security leaders don’t take action.

Organizations have moved from an operating model that was largely static — where people operated from single devices from one location, connecting to a static network — to a hybrid world in which they increasingly operate from multiple devices in multiple locations, connect to multiple networks, access applications in the cloud and on the go, and generate enormous amounts of data. This presents new and unique cybersecurity challenges for companies.

Cisco Cybersecurity Readiness Index: Resilience in a Hybrid World

Titled, Cisco Cybersecurity Readiness Index: Resilience in a Hybrid World, the report measures the readiness of companies to maintain cybersecurity resilience against modern threats. These measures cover five core pillars that form the baseline of required defenses: (1) identity, (2) devices, (3) network, (4) application workloads, and (5) data, and encompass 19 different solutions within the pillars.

Conducted by an independent third party, the double-blind survey asked 6,700 private sector cybersecurity leaders across 27 markets to indicate which of these solutions they had deployed and the stage of deployment. Companies were then classified into four stages of increasing readiness, as follows:

• Beginner (Overall score of less than 10): At the initial stages of deployment of solutions

• Formative (Score of between 11 – 44): Have some level of deployment, but performing below average on cybersecurity readiness

• Progressive (Score of between 45 – 75): Considerable level of deployment and performing above average on cybersecurity readiness

• Mature (Score of 76 and higher): Have achieved advanced stages of deployment and are most ready to address security risks

Alongside the stark finding that only 27% of companies in the Philippines are at the Mature stage, 43% of companies fall into the Beginner (6%) or Formative (37%) stages. While organizations in the Philippines are faring better than the global average (15% of companies in the Mature stage), the number is still very low, given the risks.

This readiness gap is telling, not least because 85% of respondents said they expect a cybersecurity incident to disrupt their business in the next 12 to 24 months. The cost of being unprepared can be substantial as 77% of respondents said they had a cybersecurity incident in the last 12 months, and 38% of those affected said it cost them at least USD500,000.

“The move to a hybrid world has fundamentally changed the landscape for companies and created even greater cybersecurity complexity. Organizations must stop approaching defense with a mix of point tools and instead, consider integrated platforms to achieve security resilience while reducing complexity,” said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager of security and collaboration at Cisco. “Only then will businesses be able to close the cybersecurity readiness gap.”

Business leaders must establish a baseline of ‘readiness’ across the five security pillars to build secure and resilient organizations. This need is especially critical given that 87% of the respondents plan to increase their security budgets by

Cyber Security gadgetsmagazine.com.ph 200 April 2023

at least 10 percent over the next 12 months. By establishing a base, organizations can build on their strengths and prioritize the areas where they need more maturity and improve their resilience.

“Organizations in the Philippines are charting a positive trajectory in their digitalization journeys. As the government and organizations in the Philippines fully embrace digitalization in today’s interconnected world, cybersecurity is non-negotiable. The index is a reality check for organizations in the Philipiness and a stark reminder that cybersecurity needs to keep pace with technology advancements,” said Zaza Nicart, managing director, Cisco Philippines. “As people operate from multiple devices in multiple locations, connecting to multiple networks in a dynamic hybrid world today, it is crucial for organizations in the Philippines to adopt an integrated

platform approach in securing the five core pillars of security to fortify their resilience.

Other key findings of the index include:

Readiness across the five key pillars

• Identity: Only 23% of organizations are ranked Mature

• Devices: This has the highest percentage of companies in the Mature stage at 43%

• Network Security: Companies are lagging on this front with 43% of organizations in the Beginner or Formative stages

• Application Workloads: This is the pillar where companies are the least prepared, with 50% of organizations in the Beginner or Formative stages

• Data: Progress is needed here, as 35% companies are in the Mature stage

There is a saying that travel is the best education one can get. You’re experiencing the world firsthand rather than learning about it in a classroom. You get to see and experience other cultures. The COVID-19 pandemic brought travel to a halt in recent years. While some may see travel as getting on a plane, train, or automobile to go somewhere, travel was not always accessible to everyone. One of the main facilitators to travel, Pan Am, was one of the first international airlines in the world and truly stretched the limits of going anywhere you wanted — if you had the money, that is.

Pan Am started off as a mail and passenger carrier in 1927 between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba. United States Army Air Corps officers Henry

PAN AM

“Hap” Arnold, Carl Spaatz, and John Jouett founded the company as Pan American Airways, Incorporated. However, the public face of the airline was Juan Trippe, who served in various leadership roles in the company including chairman of the board and president from its founding until 1968. He attended board meetings and held an office in the company until his death in 1981.

While Trippe was the key influential figure in Pan Am — Pan Am had the backing of the United States government and promptly began service throughout North America and South America, opening

routes to Mexico City and even as far south as Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile by 1929. The airline began to use Sikorsky flying boats between 1931 and 1946. Pan Am reached the Philippines and Hong Kong by 1936, at a cost of USD950 one way in 1937 (equivalent to USD19,847 in 2023) and USD1,710 round trip (equivalent to USD35,724.75 in 2023). These prices show that travel was still only for the wealthy. Pan Am expanded to Singapore by 1941, cutting travel time from San Francisco from 25 days to only six. Pan Am’s Clippers were also the only passenger aircraft capable of intercontinental travel.

World War II would not slow down Pan Am’s efforts, as they flew over 90 million miles to support military operations. In 1942, the Pacific Clipper completed the first circumnavigation of the globe, becoming the first commercial airline to do so. Pan Am also witnessed a different type of history when passengers were served Irish coffees while waiting for a flight to New York City from Ireland in the same year. After World War II, Pan Am ran into increasing competition, particularly from Trans World Airlines (TWA). While Pan Am bought up smaller airlines and continued to expand its routes after World War II, the jet age would be when it truly flourished.

The jet age for Pan Am began in 1955 when Pan Am placed orders for 20 Boeing 707s and 25 Douglas DC-8s for a total of USD269-million (equivalent to USD3.02billion in 2023). The first jet flight for Pan Am was between New York Idlewild to Paris Le Bourget in 1958. Pan Am also

became a Boeing 747 launch customer in 1966, which showed that the company was serious about not only establishing more routes, but also providing a worldclass customer experience. The company carried 11 million passengers over 20 billion miles in 1970 alone. Pan Am was also interested in supersonic travel, but Congress halted funding for American supersonic jets in 1971.

Cracks in Pan Am started to show in 1973 during the global oil crisis. The company heavily invested in Boeing 747s with the expectation that air travel would continue to increase. However, high oil prices and their older fleet, which was less fuel efficient, combined with the drop in demand for air travel, continued to raise operating costs. By the mid-1970s, the company was almost USD1-billion in debt. To further add to Pan Am’s laundry list of issues, they were not allowed to operate domestic flights within the United States, except to Alaska and Hawaii.

Juan Trippe coveted those routes since the 1930s, but the Civil Aeronautics Board consistently blocked Pan Am’s efforts to operate within the United States.

The deregulation of the airlines in 1978, which increased competition for Pan Am internationally, would have doomed the company on paper. Pan Am had sold off its office building in 1980, and the acquisition of National Airlines in the same year finally gave them their domestic routes. President William T. Seawell started selling off non-core assets during this time, which continued under his successor, C. Edward Acker. Around-theworld service was discontinued in 1982 when the company ceased flights to Delhi and Hong Kong. The Pacific Division was sold off in 1985 to United Airlines. A 1987 failed corporate raid by the Towers Financial Corporation resulted in Acker’s departure and the appointment of Thomas G. Plaskett as president.

The final blow to Pan Am was Pan Am Flight 103. While Pan Am’s financial situation was looking up by mid-1988, the December 21, 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 resulted in 270 fatalities and a USD300-million lawsuit by the victims’ families. Pan Am also faced fines by the Federal Aviation Administration in 1988, in addition to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. Plaskett pressed on by attempting to acquire Northwest Airlines for USD2.7-billion in 1989, which failed. Pan Am’s reputation further tanked as the Persian Gulf War raised fuel prices and resulted in more asset disposal and layoffs in 1990.

Pan Am filed for bankruptcy protection in early 1991. Delta Air Lines purchased Pan Am’s remaining profitable assets. The company ceased operations entirely on December 4, 1991. That did not spell the end of Pan Am’s troubles, as the Pan Am Creditors Committee sued the airline for USD2.5-billion. Former Vice President for External Affairs, Stanley Gewirtz, said that Pan Am was “the most astonishing example of Murphy’s law in extremis. The sale of Pan Am’s profitable parts was inevitable to the company’s destruction.”

While Pan Am was the name in international travel throughout the 20th

century, questions remain: could better business decisions have saved the company? Would they be as recognized as United, Delta, and other international carriers? Airline deregulation in 1978 forced airlines to compete for routes, but selling off profitable parts spelled disaster for Pan Am. As of 2014, Pan Am survives, but is now owned by ANA Holdings Company, the parent company of Japanese airline All Nippon Airways. While travel is certainly much cheaper nowadays, the glory days of Pan Am paint a nostalgic picture of a worldclass flying experience.
